ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation represents the best therapeutic modality in end-stage chronic liver disease, severe acute hepatitis, and selected cases of liver tumors. AIMS: To describe a double retransplant in a male patient diagnosed with Crohn's disease and complicated with primary sclerosing cholangitis, severe portal hypertension, and cholangiocarcinoma diagnosed in the transplanted liver. METHODS: A 48-year-old male patient diagnosed with Crohn's disease 25 years ago, complicated with primary sclerosing cholangitis and severe portal hypertension. He underwent a liver transplantation in 2018 due to secondary biliary cirrhosis. In 2021, a primary sclerosing cholangitis recurrence was diagnosed and a liver retransplantation was indicated. Recipient's hepatectomy was very difficult by reason of complex portal vein thrombosis requiring extensive thromboendovenectomy. Intraoperative ultrasound with liver doppler evaluation was performed. Two suspicious nodules were incidentally diagnosed in the donor's liver and immediately removed for anatomopathological evaluation. RESULTS: After pathological confirmation of carcinoma, probable cholangiocarcinoma, at frozen section, the patient was re-listed as national priority and a new liver transplantation was performed within 24 hours. The patient was discharged after 2 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: The screening for neoplasms in donated organs should be part of our strict daily diagnostic arsenal. Moreover, we argue that, for the benefit of an adequate diagnosis and the feasibility of a safer procedure, the adoption of imaging tests routine for the liver donor is essential, allowing a reduction of the costs and some potential risks of liver transplant procedure.

RESUMO RACIONAL: O transplante de fígado representa a melhor modalidade terapêutica na doença hepática crônica terminal, hepatite aguda grave e casos selecionados de tumores hepáticos. OBJETIVOS: Descrever um retransplante duplo em paciente do sexo masculino, diagnosticado com doença de Crohn e complicado com colangite esclerosante primária, hipertensão portal grave e colangiocarcinoma diagnosticado no fígado transplantado. MÉTODOS: Paciente do sexo masculino, 48 anos, diagnosticado com doença de Crohn há 25 anos e complicado com colangite esclerosante primária e hipertensão portal grave. Foi submetido a um transplante de fígado em 2018 devido a cirrose biliar secundária. Em 2021, foi diagnosticada recidiva de colangite esclerosante primária e indicado retransplante hepático. A hepatectomia do receptor foi de alta complexidade devido à trombose complexa da veia porta, exigindo extensa tromboendovenectomia. Foi realizada ultrassonografia intraoperatória com doppler hepático. Dois nódulos suspeitos foram diagnosticados incidentalmente no fígado do doador e imediatamente removidos para avaliação anatomopatológica. RESULTADOS: Após confirmação patológica de carcinoma, provável colangiocarcinoma, pela congelação, o paciente foi relistado como prioridade nacional, e novo transplante hepático foi realizado em 24 horas. O paciente teve alta após 2 semanas. CONCLUSÕES: O rastreamento de neoplasias em órgãos doados deve fazer parte de nosso estrito arsenal diagnóstico diário. Além disso, defendemos que, em benefício de um diagnóstico correto e da viabilidade de um procedimento mais seguro, a adoção de uma rotina de exames de imagem é essencial em doadores hepáticos, permitindo a redução dos custos e alguns riscos potenciais do procedimento de transplante hepático.

ABSTRACT This paper investigates if planning and cost controls and strategically aligned performance indicators (SAPI) are necessary and sufficient conditions to achieve a high level of organizational performance (OP). This article fills a gap in research by investigating elements of the management control system as necessary and sufficient conditions to achieve high levels of OP. Our findings show the reduced importance of planning controls and the great importance of aligning priorities and indicators to achieve high levels of performance. The paper is helpful for the practitioners that have to choose what kind of management controls are priorities to achieve high levels of performance. Management control frameworks are helpful for the literature and the practice. Still, the practitioners cannot implement the whole set of these components, considering the restriction of time and contingency aspects. The companies must choose what kind of management controls they have to implement, considering the goal of achieving performance. We used a quantitative methodology based on contingency theory in a survey of 89 Brazilian firms. The relationships were tested using partial least squares structural equations modeling (PLS-SEM), and necessary condition analysis (NCA) was applied to identify the management controls that are sufficient and necessary conditions for superior performance. The results of our study suggest that a high level of strategically aligned indicators is necessary to achieve a high level of performance. Results also suggest the importance of aligning strategic priorities with appropriated performance indicators, primarily defended in the normative (balanced scorecard) and empirical literature.

RESUMO Este artigo investiga se os controles de planejamento, de custos e indicadores de desempenho estrategicamente alinhados (IDEA) são condições necessárias e suficientes para alcançar um alto nível de desempenho organizacional (DO). Ele preenche uma lacuna na pesquisa ao investigar elementos do sistema de controle gerencial como condições necessárias e suficientes para alcançar altos níveis de DO. Os achados mostram uma menor importância dos controles de planejamento e uma maior importância de alinhar prioridades e indicadores para alcançar altos níveis de desempenho. Este artigo é útil para os profissionais que precisam escolher que tipo de controles gerenciais são prioritários para alcançar altos níveis de desempenho. As estruturas conceituais de controle gerencial são úteis para a literatura e a prática; todavia, os profissionais não conseguem implementar todo o conjunto desses componentes, considerando a restrição de tempo e aspectos contingenciais. As empresas têm que escolher quais tipos de controles gerenciais devem implementar, objetivando alcançar desempenho. Como método de pesquisa foi adotada uma abordagem quantitativa baseada na teoria da contingência com uma amostra de 89 empresas brasileiras. As relações foram testadas usando modelagem de equações estruturais por mínimos quadrados parciais (partial least squares structural equations modeling - PLS-SEM), e a análise de condição necessária (necessary condition analysis - NCA) foi aplicada para identificar os controles gerenciais que são condições suficientes e necessárias para um desempenho superior. Os resultados do estudo sugerem que um nível alto de indicadores alinhados estrategicamente está associado à obtenção de alto nível de desempenho. Também sugerem a importância de alinhar prioridades estratégicas com indicadores de desempenho adequados, defendidos principalmente na literatura normativa (balanced scorecard) e empírica.

ABSTRACT Objective: To review the terminologies and applications of Open Science taxonomy to build a more comprehensive version that represents the knowledge surrounding the subject in accordance with the current scenario of scientific communication and the recommendations of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Method: This is a qualitative investigation with an exploratory focus. The first step taken was the revision of existing taxonomies by 12 researchers1, who met weekly for conceptual and epistemological discussions related to Open Science and methodological and procedural definitions for the realization of the study. Results: As a result of these discussions, a proposed taxonomy was developed for revision by experts. Evaluation of this taxonomy was carried out using a questionnaire with open questions about each main axis of the taxonomy, which was sent to 68 specialists. A total of 21 responses that analyzed the modeling and exposition of terms in the proposed taxonomy were received. The final taxonomy has 10 main-level facets and a total of 96 labels. Conclusions: the responses of the experts brought to light a panorama consistent with UNESCO recommendations and the current scenario of Open Science.

RESUMEN Objetivo: revisar las terminologías y aplicaciones de la taxonomía de la Ciencia Abierta, para construir una versión más completa, que represente el conocimiento en torno al tema, de acuerdo con el escenario actual de la comunicación científica y las recomendaciones de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (Unesco). Método: se trata de una investigación exploratoria con un enfoque deductivo. El primer paso fue la revisión de las taxonomías, con las 12 personas dedicadas a la investigación, que se reunieron semanalmente, para las discusiones conceptuales y epistemológicas relacionadas con la Ciencia Abierta y las definiciones metodológicas y de procedimiento para la realización del estudio. Resultados: como resultado de los análisis, se elaboró una taxonomía para ser evaluada por las personas expertas. Para ello, se envió a 68 personas expertas un cuestionario con preguntas abiertas sobre cada eje principal de la taxonomía. Se obtuvieron 21 respuestas que cooperaron con la modelización y exposición de los términos de la nueva propuesta de taxonomía. La nueva taxonomía tiene 10 componentes de nivel principal y un total de 96 etiquetas. Conclusiones: la percepción de los expertos puso de manifiesto un panorama congruente con las recomendaciones de la Unesco y el escenario actual de la Ciencia Abierta.

RESUMO Objetivo: revisar as terminologias e aplicações da taxonomia de Ciência Aberta para a construção de uma versão mais abrangente, que represente o conhecimento em volta do tema, em conformidade com o cenário atual da comunicação científica e com as recomendações da Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura (Unesco). Método: trata-se de uma pesquisa do tipo exploratória com abordagem dedutiva. A primeira etapa foi a revisão das taxonomias, com 12 pesquisadores1 que se reuniram, semanalmente, para discussões conceituais e epistemológicas relacionadas à Ciência Aberta, e definições metodológicas e procedimentais para a realização do estudo. Resultados: como resultado das análises, foi desenvolvida uma taxonomia para ser avaliada pelos especialistas. Para isso, foi enviado um questionário com perguntas abertas, sobre cada eixo principal da taxonomia, para 68 especialistas. Foram obtidas 21 respostas que cooperaram com a modelagem e exposição dos termos para a nova taxonomia. A taxonomia oriunda desse processo de revisão tem 10 facetas de nível principal e o total de 96 rótulos. Conclusões: a percepção dos especialistas trouxe à tona um panorama congruente com as recomendações da Unesco e do atual cenário da Ciência Aberta.

ABSTRACT This paper investigates the influence of cybernetic and dynamic controls on strategic and operational flexibility and, consequently, on monetary and non-monetary performance indicators. Even though business and operation strategies have been the object of many studies, management accounting studies on how management control systems could contribute to flexibility are scarce. We conducted a survey with 89 professionals who work in Brazilian companies and employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the relationships included in the theoretical model. Our findings indicate that the relationship between monetary cybernetic control and strategic flexibility is not statistically significant. The results support the positive association between non-monetary and dynamic controls on strategic flexibility. Finally, the findings also support the mediating role of operational flexibility in the relationship between strategic flexibility and performance. This paper’s main contribution to the management control literature is its explanation of the impact of management control systems on strategic flexibility, operational flexibility, and organizational performance. For practitioners, the results highlight the importance of role management control and business strategy to leverage performance.

Abstract INTRODUCTION HIV incidence estimates are essential to monitor the progress of prevention and control interventions. METHODS Data collected by Brazilian surveillance systems were used to derive HIV incidence estimates by age group (15-24; 25+) and sex from 1986 to 2018. This study used a back-calculation method based on the first CD4 count among treatment-naïve cases. Incidence estimates for the population aged 15 years or over were compared to Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) estimates from 2000 to 2018. RESULTS Among young men (15-24 years), HIV incidence increased from 6,400 (95% CI: 4,900-8,400), in 2000, to 12,800 (95% CI: 10,800-15,900), in 2015, reaching incidence rates higher than 70/100,000 inhabitants and an annual growth rate of 3.7%. Among young women, HIV incidence decreased from 5,000 (95% CI: 4,200-6,100) to 3,200 (95% CI: 3,000-3,700). Men aged ≥25 years and both female groups showed significant annual decreases in incidence rates from 2000 to 2018. In 2018, the estimated number of new infections was 48,500 (95% CI: 45300-57500), 34,800 (95% CI: 32800-41500) men, 13,600 (95% CI: 12,500-16,000) women. Improvements in the time from infection to diagnosis and in the proportion of cases receiving antiretroviral therapy immediately after diagnosis were found for all groups. Comparison with GBD estimates shows similar rates for men with overlapping confidence intervals. Among women, differences are higher mainly in more recent years. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that efforts to control the HIV epidemic are having an impact. However, there is an urgent need to address the vulnerability of young men.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the drying system using a dryer with furnace automatically fed with eucalyptus chips and another dryer manually fed with eucalyptus firewood, as well as assessing the quality of corn grains. Harvest was mechanically performed and the grains were transported by trucks to the storage unit for drying. Corn grain drying was conducted in mixed-flow dryers with a nominal capacity of 100 tons per hour. For air heating, two direct-fired furnaces were used, one automatically fed with eucalyptus chips and the other manually fed with firewood. Corn grains were evaluated for moisture content, apparent specific mass, thousand-grain weight, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), electrical conductivity and color. Drying corn grains with direct fire using firewood or chips as fuel causes contamination by PAHs. In general, the use of firewood or chips did not influence the quality of thousand-grain weight, apparent specific mass and color, while the use of chips increased electrical conductivity. It is essential that research advances in this subject, prioritizing the contamination of food, with proven carcinogenic activity, which should be treated as a high risk to public health.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de brassinosteroide sobre os parâmetros de fluorescência da clorofila a, o índice SPAD e a suculência foliar em plantas jovens de tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum) sob estresse salino. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o em blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 5×2 - cinco níveis de salinidade da água (0,5, 1,5, 3,0, 4,5 e 6,0 dS m-1) × duas doses de 24-epibrassinolídeo (0 e 10-6 mol L-1 de EBL). Aos 23 dias, o tratamento sem EBL mostrou que o aumento da salinidade da água reduziu a eficiência fotoquímica máxima, primária e efetiva do PSII, assim como a taxa de transporte de elétrons, o índice SPAD, a suculência foliar, a massa de matéria seca total e o índice de tolerância ao estresse, mas aumentou a fluorescência inicial e o excesso relativo de energia no PSII. Com o aumento da salinidade, nos tratamentos com EBL, houve aumento da eficiência efetiva do PSII, da taxa de transporte de elétrons, do índice SPAD, da suculência foliar, da matéria seca total e do índice de tolerância ao estresse. O epibrassinolídeo promove efeitos benéficos sobre a integridade do PSII, o índice de clorofila e a suculência foliar em plantas jovens de tomate submetidas a níveis de até salinidade 6,0 dS m-1.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of brassinosteroid on chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters, the SPAD index, and leaf succulence in young tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) plants under salt stress. The experimental design was a randomized complete block, in a 5×2 factorial arrangement - five levels of water salinity (0.5, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 dS m-1) × two rates of 24-epibrassinolide (0 and 10-6 mol L-1 EBL). At 23 days, the treatment without EBL showed that the increase of water salinity reduced the maximum, primary, and effective photochemical efficiency of PSII, as well as the electron transport rate, the SPAD index, leaf succulence, total dry mass, and the stress tolerance index, but increased initial fluorescence and relative excess energy in PSII. With the increase of water salinity, in the EBL treatments, there was an increase in the effective photochemical efficiency of PSII, the electron transport rate, the SPAD index, leaf succulence, total dry mass, and the stress tolerance index. EBL promotes beneficial effects on PSII integrity, the chlorophyll index, and leaf succulence in young tomato plants subjected to salinity levels of up to 6.0 dS m-1 .

RESUMO Objetivo: o estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito da utilização do checklist (CL) de cirurgia segura na incidência de eventos adversos (EA). Método: pesquisa transversal e retrospectiva com 851 pacientes submetidos a procedimentos cirúrgicos nos anos de 2012 (n=428) e 2015 (n=423), representando os períodos antes e após a implantação do CL. As incidências de EA para cada ano foram estimadas e posteriormente comparadas. Também foi analisada a associação entre a ocorrência do EA e a presença do CL no prontuário. Resultados: observou-se uma redução na estimativa pontual de EA de 13,6% (antes do uso do CL) para 11,8% (com a utilização do CL). No entanto, a diferença entre as proporções de EA nos períodos antes e após a utilização do CL não foi significativa (p=0,213). A ocorrência do EA mostrou associação significativa às seguintes características: risco anestésico do paciente, tempo de internação, tempo de cirurgia e classificação do procedimento segundo o potencial de contaminação. Considerando a proporção de óbitos ocorridos nas amostras, observou-se uma redução significativa de mortes (p=0,007) em pacientes cujo CL foi utilizado quando comparados aqueles sem o uso do instrumento. Não foi verificada associação significativa entre a presença do CL no prontuário e a ocorrência do EA de forma geral. Conclusão: a presença do CL no prontuário não garantiu uma redução esperada na incidência de EA. No entanto, acredita-se que o uso do instrumento integrado às demais estratégias de segurança do paciente possa melhorar a segurança/qualidade da assistência cirúrgica em longo prazo.

ABSTRACT Objective: the study evaluated the effect of using the safe surgery checklist (CL) on the incidence of adverse events (AE). Methods: cross-sectional and retrospective research with 851 patients undergoing surgical procedures in 2012 (n=428) and 2015 (n=423), representing the periods before and after CL implantation. The AE incidences for each year were estimated and compared. The association between the occurrence of AE and the presence of CL in the medical record was analyzed. Results: a reduction in the point estimate of AE was observed from 13.6% (before using the CL) to 11.8% (with the use of the CL). The difference between the proportions of AE in the periods before and after the use of CL was not significant (p=0.213). The occurrence of AE showed association with the following characteristics: anesthetic risk of the patient, length of stay, surgery time and classification of the procedure according to the potential for contamination. Considering the proportion of deaths, there was a significant reduction in deaths (p=0.007) in patients whose CL was used when compared to those without the use of the instrument. There was no significant association between the presence of CL and the occurrence of AE. It was concluded that the presence of CL in the medical record did not guarantee an expected reduction in the incidence of AE. Conclusion: however, it is believed that the use of the instrument integrated with other patient safety strategies can improve the safety/quality of surgical care in the long term.

Resumo Os mamíferos são organismos carismáticos que desempenham um papel fundamental na função ecológica e nos serviços ecossistêmicos, como polinização, dispersão de sementes, ciclagem de nutrientes e controle de pragas. O Estado de São Paulo representa apenas 3% do território brasileiro, mas detém 33% da diversidade de mamíferos. A maior parte de seu território é dominado pela agricultura, pastagens e áreas urbanas que afetam diretamente a diversidade e a persistência dos mamíferos na paisagem. Além disso, São Paulo possui o maior porto da América Latina e o maior reservatório de petróleo costeiro do Brasil, com 600 km de extensão de litoral com diversas espécies de mamíferos marinhos. Essas infraestruturas afetam a diversidade, distribuição, ecologia e o futuro dos mamíferos no estado. Aqui, respondemos cinco perguntas principais: 1) Qual é a diversidade de mamíferos silvestres no Estado de São Paulo? 2) Onde eles ocorrem? 3) Qual é o seu impacto positivo e negativo no bem-estar humano? 4) Como os mamíferos persistem em paisagens modificadas pelo homem? 5) Qual é o futuro dos mamíferos no estado? O estado de São Paulo possui 255 espécies de mamíferos nativos, com quatro espécies endêmicas, duas delas globalmente ameaçadas de extinção. Pelo menos seis espécies (dois marsupiais, ariranha, veado-campeiro, veado-cambuta e tatu-canastra) foram extirpadas do estado devido à caça e perda de habitat. O intenso uso humano da terra no estado forçou muitas espécies de mamíferos a mudar sua dieta para lidar com a intensa fragmentação e agricultura. A monocultura em larga escala facilitou a invasão de espécies exóticas, como porcos selvagens (javaporco) e a lebre europeia. Várias espécies de áreas abertas estão expandindo suas áreas de distribuição (lobo-guará, veado-catingueiro) sobre áreas desmatadas e provavelmente refletem mudanças em direção a um clima mais seco. Como o estado possui o maior sistema rodoviário do Brasil, cerca de 40 mil mamíferos de 33 espécies são mortos por ano em colisões, causando um prejuízo econômico de 12 milhões de dólares/ano. A diversidade de mamíferos está concentrada nos maiores remanescentes florestais da Serra do Mar e no interior do Estado, principalmente nas regiões de Ribeirão Preto e Jundiaí. As lacunas amostrais estão concentradas em todo o interior do estado, principalmente na região noroeste. Os mamíferos silvestres desempenham um papel fundamental em muitos serviços ecossistêmicos, mas também podem ser uma preocupação em trazer novas doenças emergentes para as populações humanas. Embora a taxonomia de mamíferos pareça ser bem conhecida, mostramos que novas espécies estão sendo continuamente descobertas no estado. Portanto, pesquisas usando tecnologias tradicionais e novas (eDNA, iDNA, drones), monitoramento populacional de longo prazo, a investigação da interface do conflito homem-vida selvagem e a compreensão do papel único no ecossistema desempenhado pelos mamíferos são um caminho futuro para promover uma paisagem verde sustentável aliada ao bem-estar humano no estado. O plantio de corredores florestais ou de cerrado, principalmente junto aos principais sistemas fluviais, no planalto, o controle da caça ilegal nas áreas costeiras, o manejo dos regimes de fogo no Cerrado e a mitigação dos atropelamentos devem ser uma prioridade para proteger essa notável diversidade de mamíferos.

Abstract Mammals are charismatic organisms that play a fundamental role in ecological functions and ecosystem services, such as pollination, seed dispersal, nutrient cycling, and pest control. The state of São Paulo represents only 3% of the Brazilian territory but holds 33% of its mammalian diversity. Most of its territory is dominated by agriculture, pastures, and urban areas which directly affect the diversity and persistence of mammals in the landscape. In addition, São Paulo has the largest port in Latin America and the largest offshore oil reservoir in Brazil, with a 600 km stretch of coastline with several marine mammal species. These human-made infrastructures affect the diversity, distribution, ecology, and the future of mammals in the state. Here, we answer five main questions: 1) What is the diversity of wild mammals in São Paulo state? 2) Where are they? 3) What is their positive and negative impact on human well-being? 4) How do mammals thrive in human-modified landscapes? 5) What is the future of mammals in the state? The state of São Paulo holds 255 species of native mammals, with four endemic species, two of them globally endangered. At least six species (two marsupials, Giant otter, Pampas deer, Brazilian dwarf brocket deer, and Giant armadillo) were extirpated from the state due to hunting and habitat loss. The intense human land use in the state forced many mammalian species to change their diet to cope with the intense fragmentation and agriculture. Large-scale monoculture has facilitated the invasion of exotic species such as wild boars (javali) and the European hare. Several “savanna-dwelling” species are expanding their ranges (Maned wolf, Brocket deer) over deforested areas and probably reflect changes towards a drier climate. Because the state has the largest road system, about 40,000 mammals from 33 species are killed per year in collisions causing an economic loss of 12 million dollars/year. The diversity of mammals is concentrated in the largest forest remnants of Serra do Mar and in the interior of the State, mainly in the regions of Ribeirão Preto and Jundiaí. Sampling gaps are concentrated throughout the interior of the state, particularly in the northwest region. Wild mammals play a fundamental role in many ecosystem services, but they can also be a concern in bringing new emergent diseases to humans. Although the taxonomy of mammals seems to be well known, we show that new species are continuously being discovered in the state. Therefore, continuous surveys using traditional and new technologies (eDNA, iDNA, drones), long-term population monitoring, investigation of the interface of human-wildlife conflict, and understanding of the unique ecosystem role played by mammals are future avenues for promoting sustainable green landscapes allied to human well-being in the state. The planting of forest or savanna corridors, particularly along with major river systems, in the plateau, controlling illegal hunting in the coastal areas, managing fire regimes in the Cerrado, and mitigating roadkill must be prioritized to protect this outstanding mammal diversity.

ABSTRACT. Salinity is one of the environmental stresses that most cause losses in agricultural systems, including tomato production. Brassinosteroids, such as epibrassinolide (EBL), have multiple actions in essential processes in plants. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the contributions of EBL to the growth, physiology, and production of tomato plants under salinity. The experiment was conducted in a factorial scheme, with five levels of water salinity (0.5 [the control], 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 dS m-1) and two concentrations of EBL (0 and 10-6 M). Salt stress reduced tomato growth, relative water content, membrane integrity, gas exchange, and fruit production. However, the exogenous application of EBL attenuated the adverse effects, partially improving these characteristics at all salinity levels. EBL reduced electrolyte leakage and increased membrane integrity and relative water content in control and stressed plants. Additionally, it increased the content of photosynthetic pigments, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and photosynthesis, which led to higher leaf dry mass production, fruit transverse diameter, and production per plant. Therefore, our results confirmed that foliar application of EBL improved the characteristics of stressed and non-stressed tomato plants.

Abstract Diseases involving the spinal cord include a heterogeneous group of abnormalities, including those of inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, vascular, metabolic, and traumatic origin. Making the clinical differentiation between different entities is often difficult, magnetic resonance imaging being the diagnostic method of choice. Although the neuroimaging findings are not pathognomonic, many are quite suggestive, and the radiologist can assist in the diagnosis and, consequently, in the therapeutic guidance. In this first part of our article, the objective is to review the magnetic resonance imaging findings of the main neoplastic, vascular, metabolic, and traumatic spinal cord injuries.

Resumo As doenças que envolvem a medula espinal incluem um grupo heterogêneo de anomalias, englobando causas inflamatórias, infecciosas, neoplásicas, vasculares, metabólicas e traumáticas. Muitas vezes a diferenciação clínica entre as diversas entidades é difícil, sendo a ressonância magnética a modalidade de escolha na investigação diagnóstica. Apesar de os achados de neuroimagem não serem patognomônicos, muitos são bastante sugestivos, podendo o radiologista auxiliar no diagnóstico e, consequentemente, na orientação terapêutica. O objetivo desta primeira parte do artigo é revisar os achados de ressonância magnética das principais lesões medulares neoplásicas, vasculares, metabólicas e traumáticas.
