Resumen. Los modelos alométricos son de vital importancia ya que permiten estimar la biomasa aérea en cada uno de sus componentes (hojas, ramas, fuste y total) del árbol. El objetivo del estudio fue ajustar modelos alométricos para estimar biomasa aérea por componentes en árboles individuales de Tectona grandis L. f. en Tizimín, Yucatán. La biomasa aérea se estimó mediante el método directo, se derribó en campo un total de 32 individuos, cada árbol se separó por componente; hojas, ramas y fuste y se determinó el peso verde, se extrajeron submuestras de los componentes para determinar la relación peso seco-peso verde. Para obtener la biomasa se multiplicó el peso verde total de cada componente por su relación correspondiente. Para cada componente se ajustaron ecuaciones lineales y no lineales, mediante el método de mínimos cuadrados ordinarios. El modelo no lineal (potencial) mostró mejor ajuste, presentando el componente fuste y total registraron un R2 de 0.96 en T. grandis L. f. La proporción de biomasa en cada uno de sus componentes fue diferente, siendo el fuste el de mayor porcentaje con un 48%, seguido de ramas con 35 y 17% en hojas.

Abstract. Allometric models are of vital importance since they allow estimating the aerial biomass in each of its components (leaves, branches, stem and total) of the tree. The objective of the study was to adjust allometric models to estimate aerial biomass by components in individual trees of Tectona grandis L. f. in Tizimin, Yucatan. Aerial biomass was estimated using the direct method, a total of 32 individuals were shot down in the field, each tree was separated by component; leaves, branches and stem and the green weight was determined, subsamples of the components were extracted to determine the dry weight-green weight relationship. To obtain the biomass, the total green weight of each component was multiplied by its corresponding ratio. Linear and non-linear equations were adjusted for each component, using the method of ordinary least squares. The non-linear (potential) model showed a better fit, presenting the stem and total component they registered an R2 of 0.96 in T. grandis L. f. The proportion of biomass in each of its components was different, being the stem the one with the highest percentage with 48%, followed by branches with 35 and 17% leaves.

Resumen: El Pediatric Index of Mortality 3 (PIM3) es una escala que estima el riesgo de mortalidad en niños ingresados a Unidad de Cuidado Intensivo Pediátrico (UCIP) en la primera hora del ingreso. Objetivo: validar la escala PIM3 en población pediátrica que ingresa a UCIP en alturas sobre los 2.500 metros sobre el nivel del mar (m.s.n.m.), y evaluar si el lactato y el índice Saturación de Oxígeno/Fracción inspirada de oxígeno (SpO2/FiO2) mejoran su capacidad de predicción de mortalidad. Pacientes y Método: Estudio prospectivo multicéntrico realizado en diez UCIP de Colombia entre noviembre de 2016 y junio de 2017. Se recolectaron variables para cálculo del PIM3, lactato sérico y el índice SpO2/FiO2. Se validó su capacidad de discriminación con el área bajo la curva ROC y la calibración mediante la prueba de bondad de ajuste de Hosmer Lemeshow. Resultados: Se incluyeron 2.803 registros de admisiones, con una mortalidad global de 4,8%, y razón estandarizada de mortalidad de 1,1 (IC95%; 1,00-1,3). El PIM3 mostró una baja calibración (p < 0,001) y una adecuada discriminación para la población aplicada (ROC 0,84; IC95% 0,83-0,86). La adición de lactato sérico y SpO2/ FiO2 permitieron una buena calibración (p = 0,75), y mantuvo una alta discriminación de mortalidad (ROC 0,86; IC95% 0,84-0,87). Conclusiones: El comportamiento de la escala PIM3 tiene adecuada discriminación, pero una baja calibración en niños admitidos a UCIP sobre los 2500 m.s.n.m.. Las variables lactato y SpO2/FiO2 mejoraron su habilidad predictiva.

Abstract: The Pediatric Index of Mortality 3 (PIM3) is a scale that estimates the risk of mortality in children admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) within the first hour of admission. Objective: to validate the PIM3 scale in pediatric population admitted to PICU at altitudes over 2,500 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.), and to evaluate whether lactate and the oxygen saturation/fraction of inspired oxygen (SpO2/FiO2) index improve its ability to predict mortality. Patients and Method: A prospective multicenter study was carried out in 10 PICUs in Colombia between November 2016 and June 2017. Variables were collected for the calculation of PIM3, serum lactate, and SpO2/FiO2 index. Their discrimination capacity was validated with the area under the ROC curve and calibration using the Hosmer Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test. Results: 2,803 admissions were included, with an overall mortality of 4.8% and a standardized mortality ratio of 1.1 (95%CI 1.00-1.3). PIM3 showed low calibration (p < 0.001) and adequate discrimination for the studied population (ROC 0.84; 95%CI 0.83-0.86). The addition of serum lactate and SpO2/FiO2 allowed a good calibration (p = 0.75) and maintained a high discrimination of mortality (ROC 0.86; 95%CI 0.84-0.87). Conclusions: The performance of the PIM3 scale has adequate discrimination, but low calibration in children admitted to PICU at above 2500 m. a. s. l. Lactate and SpO2/FiO2 variables improved its predictive ability.

Abstract Background: The Mammillaria series Stylothelae (Cactaceae) includes 16 taxa distributed mostly among the limits of the Chihuahuan Desert (CD) with the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Transmexican Volcanic Belt (TVB). In Jalisco, four pink flowered species occur at the southwestern end of the CD where it meets the TVB. The boundaries and recognition of three species related with M. fittkaui (M. fittkaui complex) are debatable. Question: Should the taxa of the Mammillaria fittkaui species complex be considered as species? Studied species: Four pink flowered Mammillaria series Stylothelae (M. fittkaui species complex) and M. zeilmanniana as comparative species. Study site: Western Mexico. Methods: Six morphological characters were sampled in specimens from the type locations of three pink flowered species, one locality of Mammillaria sp., and M. zeilmanniana. We used a permutational multivariate analysis of variance on six characters of each of the groups and a discriminant analysis to evaluate the morphological variation among species and to determine the correct classification of each individual. Results: The analyses identified four well defined morphological groups with statistical significance within the Mammillaria fittkaui complex. We recognized M. fittkaui, M. limonensis, and M. manana as species and here describe M. arreolae as a new species from Jalisco. Conclusions: In Cactaceae, morphometry has been useful to establish species boundaries. The Mammillaria fittkaui complex includes four species. Mammillaria arreolae differs from the other species by the shorter tubercles, flowers, and fruits. In addition, it develops more than one hooked central spine per areole.

Resumen Antecedentes: Mammillaria serie Stylothelae (Cactaceae) incluye 16 taxones distribuidos principalmente entre los límites del Desierto Chihuahuense (DC), la Sierra Madre Oriental y el Eje Volcánico Transmexicano (EVT). En Jalisco, cuatro taxones de flores rosas ocurren en el extremo suroeste del DC que confluye con el EVT. Los límites y el reconocimiento de tres especies relacionadas con M. fittkaui (complejo M. fittkaui) son debatibles. Pregunta: ¿Los taxones del complejo de especies Mammillaria fittkaui deberían ser considerados como especies diferentes? Especies estudiadas: Cuatro especies de Mammillaria serie Stylothelae de flores rosas (complejo M. fittkaui) y M. zeilmanniana como grupo comparativo. Sitio de estudio: Occidente de México. Métodos: Seis caracteres morfológicos fueron muestreados en las localidades tipo de las tres especies de flores rosas, una localidad de Mammillaria sp. y M. zeilmanniana. Se utilizó un análisis multivariado de varianza basado en permutaciones en seis caracteres entre los cinco grupos y un análisis discriminante para evaluar la variación morfológica entre especies y determinar la correcta clasificación de cada individuo. Resultados: Los análisis identificaron cuatro grupos bien definidos con significancia estadística dentro del complejo Mammillaria fittkaui. Reconocemos a M. fittkaui, M. limonensis y M. manana y describimos a M. arreolae como una especie nueva de Jalisco. Conclusiones: En Cactaceae, la morfometría es útil para establecer límites entre especies. El complejo Mammillaria fittkaui incluye cuatro especies. Mammillaria arreolae difiere de las otras especies por sus tubérculos, flores y frutos más cortos. Además, desarrolla más de una espina central uncinada por aréola.

Abstract: Prejudices about old age transcend different spheres of everyday life, with eroticism and sexuality being dimensions that are socially associated with a restriction of pleasure and enjoyment, mainly due to cultural changes that restrict this stage being considered from a sexual point of view. However, the exercise of erotic-sexual capacities acquires a relevant place in life experiences, as it is related to the right to live an old age in greater plenitude. The different visions of the erotic life of this age group are produced and reproduced in the social fabric through different media, with the cinema, given its massiveness and creative capacity, being an important space for recognising the construction of representations that operate on a social level. In this regard, this documentary study addresses the eroticism of older people in contemporary Chilean cinema, describing three dominant social representations: ‘The dirty old man: conquering a young person’; ‘Old men who remember: the eroticism that comes from the past’; and ‘Old Seductresses: in search of male desire’. The representations show a greater permissiveness in terms of the expression and experience of eroticism in older men, while women’s experience is subordinated to the dominant male desire. Nevertheless, through film, it is revealed as a possibility for older women to move towards a position of greater autonomy and independence in the experience of their sexuality.

Resumen: Los prejuicios sobre la vejez trascienden distintas esferas de la cotidianeidad, siendo el erotismo y la sexualidad dimensiones que socialmente se asocian a una restricción del placer y el goce, principalmente por los cambios culturales que restringen que esta etapa sea considerada desde la sexualidad. Sin embargo, el ejercicio de las capacidades erótico-sexuales adquiere un lugar relevante en las experiencias de vida, pues se relaciona con el derecho a vivir una vejez en mayor plenitud. Las distintas visiones sobre la vida erótica de este grupo etario se producen y reproducen en el entramado social por distintos medios, siendo el cine, dada su masividad y su capacidad creativa, un espacio importante para reconocer la construcción de representaciones que operan a nivel social. Al respecto, el presente estudio documental aborda el erotismo de las personas mayores en el cine chileno contemporáneo, describiendo tres representaciones sociales dominantes: ‘El viejo verde: conquistando a una persona joven’; ‘Viejos/as que recuerdan: el erotismo que deviene del pasado’; y ‘Viejas Seductoras: en la búsqueda del deseo masculino’. Las representaciones dan cuenta de una mayor permisividad en cuanto a la expresión y vivencia del erotismo en el hombre mayor, mientras que la experiencia de las mujeres se ve supeditada al deseo masculino dominante. No obstante, a través del cine se revela como una posibilidad de vida el que las mujeres mayores puedan transitar hacia una posición de mayor autonomía e independencia para vivir su sexualidad.

Resumen En este trabajo desarrollamos un modelo de insumo-producto medioambiental para la economía mexicana con el fin de explorar qué tanto es posible reducir la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) en la economía para 2030. El modelo muestra cómo nuevas tecnologías aplicadas en subsectores seleccionados de la economía reducen las emisiones totales y estima los impactos de tales tecnologías en las emisiones anuales de GEI hasta 2030. Utilizamos esta metodología con el propósito de estimar dos trayectorias: una a la que llamamos “base” y otra que resulta de simular un cambio tecnológico en las ramas seleccionadas. A partir de los resultados, concluimos que el cambio tecnológico, aun limitado a unas cuantas ramas, tiende a producir efectos benéficos importantes en materia de reducción de GEI.

Abstract In this paper, we built an input-output environmental model for the Mexican economy to estimate the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced by this economy to the year 2030 and to explore the possibilities for their reduction. The model shows how innovative technologies applied in selected subsectors of the economy might reduce total emissions, through their direct and indirect effects on other sectors. We used the model to calculate two trajectories: one called “business as usual” and another that results from simulating a technological change in selected sectors. We conclude from the results that technological change, even limited to a few sectors, tends to produce important beneficial effects in terms of GHG reduction.

RESUMEN: Los objetivos del presente estudio fueron primero evaluar la asociación de dimensiones antropométricas de tórax y tronco con índices espirométricos, segundo, ajustar una ecuación de predicción con dimensiones antropométricas de tronco y tercero, comparar nuestro modelo predictivo con dos ecuaciones diagnósticas. Se evaluaron 59 estudiantes universitarios entre 20 y 40 años, de ambos sexos, sin hábito tabáquico. Las variables consideradas fueron: edad, sexo, peso, estatura, diámetro transverso de tórax, diámetro anteroposterior de tórax, perímetro de tórax, altura de tórax, altura de tronco, flujo espiratorio máximo (FEM), volumen espiratorio forzado en el primer segundo (VEF1) y capacidad vital forzada (CVF). Se utilizó el análisis de regresión múltiple para estimar los valores espirométricos en función de las variables demográficas y antropométricas. La CVF y el VEF1 tienen asociación lineal directa con el diámetro transverso de tórax, altura de tórax, perímetro de tórax y altura de tronco. Se ajustó una ecuación de regresión lineal múltiple que indicó que es posible estimar la CVF y el VEF11 en función de la altura de tronco y el perímetro de tórax para ambos sexos. Estas variables son capaces de explicar el 74 % de los valores de CVF y el 68 % de los valores de VEF1. Al comparar los valores obtenidos por nuestras ecuaciones predictivas con las ecuaciones de referencia nacional observamos que nuestros resultados son más cercanos a los de Quanjer et al. (2012) que a los de Knudson et al. (1983). La altura de tronco y el perímetro de tórax tienen asociación directa con el VEF1 y CVF y son buenos predictores del VEF1 y CVF en estudiantes universitarios. Nuestros valores estimados son más cercanos a las ecuaciones de Quanjer et al. (2012) en comparación a las estimaciones de Knudson (1983).

SUMMARY: The purposes of the present study were first to evaluate the association between anthropometric dimensions of the thorax and trunk with spirometric indices, second, to fit a prediction equation with anthropometric dimensions of the trunk, and third, to compare our predictive model with two diagnostic equations. Fifty-nine university students between 20 and 40 years old, of both sexes and non-smokers were recruited. Variables considered were age, sex, weight, height, chest transverse diameter, chest anteroposterior diameter, chest perimeter, chest height, trunk height, maximum expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). Multiple regression analysis was used to estimate spirometric values based on demographic and anthropometric variables. FVC and FEV1 have a direct linear association with chest transverse diameter, chest height, chest circumference, and trunk height. A multiple linear regression equation was fitted, indicating that it is possible to estimate FVC and FEV1 as a function of trunk height and chest girth for both sexes. These variables can explain 74% of the FVC values and 68% of the FEV1 values. Comparing the values obtained by our predictive equations with the national reference equations, we observe that our results are closer to those of Quanjer et al. (2012) than to those of Knudson et al. (1983). Trunk height and chest circumference have a direct association with FEV1 and FVC and are good predictors of FEV1 and FVC in university students. Our estimated values are closer to Quanjer et al. (2012) than Knudson et al. (1983) prediction equations.

Resumen: La programación del riego es un factor clave para el manejo eficiente del agua en la agricultura. El objetivo del estudio fue programar los riegos con el uso del atmómetro y el coeficiente de cultivo (Kc) en maíz (Zeamays L.) forrajero para evaluar su efecto en la altura de planta, índice de área foliar, rendimiento de materia seca (MS) y eficiencia en el uso del agua (EUA) bajo diferentes tratamientos de riego. El estudio se realizó en el Campo Experimental la Laguna del INIFAP ubicado en Matamoros, Coahuila, México. Se utilizaron tres híbridos de maíz (H-431, H-383 y SB-302) con un sistema de riego por goteo subsuperficial, donde se aplicaron los tratamientos del 60, 80 y 100% de la evapotranspiración (ET) y un testigo (riego por gravedad). El diseño experimental fue bloques completamente al azar con parcelas divididas y cuatro repeticiones. La programación del riego con el atmómetro y el Kc del maíz propiciaron un mayor rendimiento de MS (18.83 t ha-1) y EUA (3.66 kg de MS m-3) en los tres híbridos con el 100% de ET. La EUA en el 100% de ET fue 1.36, 1.63 y 40% mayor con respecto al 60%, 80% de ET y riego por gravedad, respectivamente. Por lo tanto, programar el riego mediante el uso del atmómetro y el Kc del cultivo en un sistema de riego por goteo subsuperficial ayuda a obtener un mayor uso eficiente del agua en maíz forrajero.

Abstract: Irrigation scheduling is a key factor for efficient water management in agriculture. The objective of the study was to program the irrigations with the use of the atmometer and the crop coefficient (Kc) in forage corn (Zea mays L.) to evaluate its effect on plant height, leaf area index, dry matter yield (DM) and water use efficiency (WUE) under different irrigation treatments. The study was carried out in the Experimental Field La Laguna of INIFAP located in Matamoros, Coahuila, Mexico. Three corn hybrids (H-431, H-383 and SB-302) were used with a subsurface drip irrigation system, applying 60, 80 and 100% evapotranspiration (ET) treatments and a control (gravity irrigation). The experimental design was completely randomized blocks with divided plots and four replications. Irrigation scheduling with the atmometer and Kc of corn led to a higher DM yield (18.83 t ha-1) and WUE (3.66 kg DM m-3) in the three hybrids with 100% ET. The WUE in 100% ET was 1.36, 1.63 and 40% higher with respect to 60%, 80% ET and irrigation by gravity, respectively. Therefore, scheduling irrigation using the atmometer and crop Kc in a subsurface drip irrigation system helps to obtain more efficient water use in forage corn.

Resumen: Introducción: la proteína C ultrasensible (PCRus) es un biomarcador inflamatorio producido principalmente en el hígado. La obesidad ha sido ligada a un proceso inflamatorio crónico y tiene una conexión cercana con dicho biomarcador al sobreexpresar citocinas proinflamatorias derivadas del tejido adiposo. Objetivo: estudiar la asociación de la obesidad con la elevación de la PCRus como marcador proinflamatorio en población mexicana. Material y métodos: estudio retrospectivo y transversal. Se utilizaron registros de PCRus en pacientes de la clínica de medicina preventiva en un hospital privado de la Ciudad de México, de enero a junio de 2019. Población: 672 pacientes mayores de 20 años; 419 hombres y 253 mujeres, con datos de índice de masa corporal (IMC) y PCRus < 10 mg/L. Se realizó regresión lineal múltiple con transformaciones logarítmicas de PCRus, IMC y sexo. Resultados: el coeficiente para el logaritmo natural de IMC resultó positivo y estadísticamente significativo (p < 0.001), el coeficiente para sexo masculino resultó negativo y estadísticamente significativo (p < 0.001), el modelo obtuvo una R(2) = 0.17. Conclusiones: la elevación de PCRus se encontró asociada de manera positiva con el IMC y positiva con el sexo femenino; sin embargo, el modelo es poco explicativo, ya que existen elevaciones del PCRus en ambos grupos, aunque fue mayor en pacientes con obesidad, con o sin comorbilidades, esto sugiere que la PCRus es un marcador inflamatorio asociado a obesidad en población mexicana.

Abstract: Introduction: usCRP is an inflammatory biomarker produced in the liver. Obesity has been associated with a chronic inflammatory process and linked with said biomarker by overexpressing pro-inflammatory cytokines produced in adipose tissue. Objectives: study the association between elevated usCRP as a pro-inflammatory marker in patients with a diagnosis of obesity in the Mexican population. Material and methods: retrospective and cross-sectional study; registries of usCRP in patients of the preventive medicine clinic in a private hospital in Mexico City were reviewed from January to June 2019. The population included 672 patients, of which 419 were male and 253 female at least 20 years of age, in whom usCRP values < 10 mg/L. We performed a multiple linear regression with logarithmic transformations of usCRP, BMI, and sex. Results: the coefficient for the natural logarithm for the BMI was positive and statistically significant (p < 0.001), the coefficient for the male sex turned a negative and statistically significant result (p < 0.001), and the model obtained an R(2) = 0.17. Conclusions: a positive association between elevated usCRP, female sex, and BMI were found; however, this model does not manage to explain all elevations in usCRP, meaning that we found elevations in both groups. More significant elevations were found in obese patients, with or without comorbidities, thus suggesting that usCRP is an inflammatory marker associated with obesity in Mexican population.

Abstract: This research study seeks to describe university students’ perceptions of social responsibility from the perspective of social outbreaks (“Estallido Social”) and the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile. An instrument is applied to a non-probabilistic sample of 153 university students from southern Chile. An exploratory factor analysis is performed and statistically significant differences are examined considering the sociodemographic characteristics of the sample. The results show differences according to occupation, socioeconomic level, and the criterion variable. The most significant correlation is observed between “personal discovery of values” and “professional practice with social commitment.” It is concluded that universities must develop efforts to design policies, strategies, practices, and actions for training in socially responsible behavior by considering current contexts and the challenges of a society damaged by the pandemic.

Resumen: La presente investigación busca describir la percepción del estudiante universitario sobre la responsabilidad social desde la perspectiva de las protestas (“Estallido Social”) y la pandemia COVID-19 en Chile. Se aplica un instrumento a una muestra no probabilística de 153 estudiantes universitarios de la zona sur de Chile. Se realiza un análisis factorial exploratorio y se examinan diferencias estadísticamente significativas considerando las características sociodemográficas de la muestra. Los resultados muestran diferencias según ocupación, nivel socioeconómico y variable criterio. Se observa en todos los casos una correlación alta y positiva entre las dimensiones. La mayor correlación se encuentra entre la dimensión “descubrimiento personal de los valores” y “planteamiento del ejercicio profesional desde el compromiso social”. Se concluye que las universidades deben desarrollar esfuerzos para el diseño de políticas, estrategias, prácticas y acciones para la formación en comportamiento socialmente responsable considerando el contexto actual y los desafíos de una sociedad dañada por la pandemia.

Abstract Background Sepsis is an uncontrolled inflammatory response against a systemic infection that results in elevated mortality, mainly induced by bacterial products known as endotoxins, producing endotoxemia. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is frequently observed in septic patients and is associated with organ failure and death. Sepsis activates endothelial cells (ECs), promoting a prothrombotic phenotype contributing to DIC. Ion channel mediated calcium permeability participates in coagulation. The transient reception potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) non-selective divalent cation channel that also contains an α-kinase domain, which is permeable to divalent cations including Ca2+, regulates endotoxin-stimulated calcium permeability in ECs and is associated with increased mortality in septic patients. However, whether endothelial TRPM7 mediates endotoxemia-induced coagulation is not known. Therefore, our aim was to examine if TRPM7 mediates coagulation during endotoxemia. Results The results showed that TRPM7 regulated endotoxin-induced platelet and neutrophil adhesion to ECs, dependent on the TRPM7 ion channel activity and by the α-kinase function. Endotoxic animals showed that TRPM7 mediated neutrophil rolling on blood vessels and intravascular coagulation. TRPM7 mediated the increased expression of the adhesion proteins, von Willebrand factor (vWF), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), and P-selectin, which were also mediated by the TRPM7 α-kinase function. Notably, endotoxin-induced expression of vWF, ICAM-1 and P-selectin were required for endotoxin-induced platelet and neutrophil adhesion to ECs. Endotoxemic rats showed increased endothelial TRPM7 expression associated with a procoagulant phenotype, liver and kidney dysfunction, increased death events and an increased relative risk of death. Interestingly, circulating ECs (CECs) from septic shock patients (SSPs) showed increased TRPM7 expression associated with increased DIC scores and decreased survival times. Additionally, SSPs with a high expression of TRPM7 in CECs showed increased mortality and relative risk of death. Notably, CECs from SSPs showed significant results from the AUROC analyses for predicting mortality in SSPs that were better than the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) and the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores. Conclusions Our study demonstrates that sepsis-induced DIC is mediated by TRPM7 in ECs. TRPM7 ion channel activity and α-kinase function are required by DIC-mediated sepsis-induced organ dysfunction and its expression are associated with increased mortality during sepsis. TRPM7 appears as a new prognostic biomarker to predict mortality associated to DIC in SSPs, and as a novel target for drug development against DIC during infectious inflammatory diseases.

Objective: to validate the PIM3 scale in pediatric population admitted to PICU at altitudes over 2,500 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.), and to evaluate whether lactate and the oxygen saturation/fraction of inspired oxygen (SpO2/FiO2) index improve its ability to predict mortality. Patients and Method: A prospective multicenter study was carried out in 10 PICUs in Colombia between November 2016 and June 2017. Variables were collected for the calculation of PIM3, serum lactate, and SpO2/FiO2 index. Their discrimination capacity was validated with the area under the ROC curve and calibration using the Hosmer Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test. Results: 2,803 admissions were included, with an overall mortality of 4.8% and a standardized mortality ratio of 1.1 (95%CI 1.00-1.3). PIM3 showed low calibration (p < 0.001) and adequate discrimination for the studied population (ROC 0.84; 95%CI 0.83-0.86). The addition of serum lactate and SpO2/FiO2 allowed a good calibration (p = 0.75) and maintained a high discrimination of mortality (ROC 0.86; 95%CI 0.84-0.87). Conclusions: The performance of the PIM3 scale has adequate discrimination, but low calibration in children admitted to PICU at above 2500 m. a. s. l. Lactate and SpO2/FiO2 variables improved its predictive ability.

Resumen: El Pediatric Index of Mortality 3 (PIM3) es una escala que estima el riesgo de mortalidad en niños ingresados a Unidad de Cuidado Intensivo Pediátrico (UCIP) en la primera hora del ingreso. Objetivo: validar la escala PIM3 en población pediátrica que ingresa a UCIP en alturas sobre los 2.500 metros sobre el nivel del mar (m.s.n.m.), y evaluar si el lactato y el índice Saturación de Oxígeno/Fracción inspirada de oxígeno (SpO2/FiO2) mejoran su capacidad de predicción de mortalidad. Pacientes y Método: Estudio prospectivo multicéntrico realizado en diez UCIP de Colombia entre noviembre de 2016 y junio de 2017. Se recolectaron variables para cálculo del PIM3, lactato sérico y el índice SpO2/FiO2. Se validó su capacidad de discriminación con el área bajo la curva ROC y la calibración mediante la prueba de bondad de ajuste de Hosmer Lemeshow. Resultados: Se incluyeron 2.803 registros de admisiones, con una mortalidad global de 4,8%, y razón estandarizada de mortalidad de 1,1 (IC95%; 1,00-1,3). El PIM3 mostró una baja calibración (p < 0,001) y una adecuada discriminación para la población aplicada (ROC 0,84; IC95% 0,83-0,86). La adición de lactato sérico y SpO2/ FiO2 permitieron una buena calibración (p = 0,75), y mantuvo una alta discriminación de mortalidad (ROC 0,86; IC95% 0,84-0,87). Conclusiones: El comportamiento de la escala PIM3 tiene adecuada discriminación, pero una baja calibración en niños admitidos a UCIP sobre los 2500 m.s.n.m.. Las variables lactato y SpO2/FiO2 mejoraron su habilidad predictiva.

Abstract Objective: Comparing the pedestrian accessibility of pharmacy-adjacent doctors’ offices with public primary healthcare facilities, and private doctor’s offices. Methodology: Spatial descriptive statistics and the E2SFC method were used. Results: The population with inaccesibility to public services (73.3%) was seven times higher compared to pharmacy-adjacent doctors’ offices (11.3%) and four times higher for conventional private services (44.6%). Limitation: Only pedestrian mobility was considered. Value: There is no knowledge of comparative studies of these health services from the spatial perspective. Conclusions: The location strategy adopted by the public and conventional private health services has produced on a limited pedestrian accessibility that the pharmacy-adjacent doctors’ offices business model takes advantage of. The State must guarantee the quality of healthcare in these establishments and demand that they comply with the notification obligations for disease surveillance.

Resumen Objetivo: comparar la accesibilidad peatonal de los consultorios adyacentes a farmacias con la de los consultorios públicos de los centros de salud y con los consultorios privados convencionales de atención primaria en la ciudad de Hermosillo. Metodología: se utilizó estadística espacial descriptiva y el método E2SFCA de accesibilidad espacial. Resultados: la población con inaccesibilidad peatonal a los consultorios públicos (73.3%) fue siete veces mayor que la población con inaccesibilidad peatonal a los consultorios adyacentes a farmacias (11.3%) y cuatro veces mayor que la de los consultorios privados convencionales (44.6%). Limitaciones: solo se consideró la movilidad peatonal. Valor: no se conoce otro estudio comparativo de estos servicios desde la perspectiva espacial. Conclusiones: las estrategias de localización que adoptaron los servicios públicos y privados convencionales influyeron en la accesibilidad peatonal limitada que aprovecharon los consultorios adyacentes a farmacias. El Estado debe garantizar la calidad de la atención de estos últimos establecimientos y exigir que cumplan con la obligación de reportar aquellas enfermedades que sean de notificación obligatoria.

Abstract Thousands of people have died of COVID-19 in El Salvador. However, little is known about the mental health of those who are mourning the loss of a loved one to COVID-19. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the dysfunctional grief associated with COVID-19 death among Salvadoran adults. A sample of 435 Salvadorans ( M = 29 years; SD = 8.75) who lost a family member or loved one to COVID-19 completed a digital survey using the Google Forms platform, during April 2 and 28, 2022. The results revealed that 35.1% reported clinically elevated symptoms of dysfunctional grief and among those mourners, and 25.1% also exhibited clinical levels of coronavirus anxiety. A binary logistic regression revealed that predictor variables such as COVID-19 anxiety ( p = .003), depression ( p = .021), and COVID-19 obsession ( p = .032) were significant ( χ 2 = 84.31; Nagelkerke R 2 = .242) and predict a 24.2% chance of dysfunctional bereavement.
