The Cuban industry La Purísima produces sauces and dressings for the national gastronomy; but it does not have a process for the deposition of chicken eggshells, as a result, 220 kg of eggshells are dumped daily, which generate a negative impact on the environment. The research evaluates the drying of hen eggshells with protein membrane on a laboratory scale, with a view to revalorizing this waste in the production of a calcium-rich poultry feed supplement. The calcium carbonate content of the shell was determined to confirm the potential application of the residue. The drying curve and drying rate curve was obtained by experimental measurement in a drying oven under aeration at 90 °C. The calcium carbonate content of the residue was 93,33 %. The drying curve was fitted to an exponential mathematical model as a function of the drying constant and the moisture in equilibrium at a temperature of 90 °C. The drying regime of the solid presented a period of decreasing drying rate up to a moisture value of 0,021 kg of water / kg of dry solid, for lower values, this presented a deviation from the exponential function in its rate. The utilization of residual eggshells proved to be an attractive source of calcium carbonate with potential for its use in the production of feed supplement for poultry.

RESUMEN En la Industria cubana La Purísima se producen salsas y aderezos para la gastronomía nacional; pero no dispone de un proceso para la deposición de las cáscaras de huevo de gallina, como resultado, se vierten diariamente 220 kg de cáscaras que generan un impacto negativo en el medio ambiente. La investigación evalúa el secado de las cáscaras de huevo de gallina con membrana proteica a escala de laboratorio, con vistas a revalorizar este residuo en la producción de un suplemento alimenticio para aves de corral rico en calcio. Se determinó el contenido de carbonato de calcio en la cáscara para confirmar la aplicación potencial del residuo. La curva de secado y del régimen de secado se obtuvo por medición experimental en un secadero bajo aireación a 90 °C. El contenido de carbonato de calcio en el residual fue de 93,33 %. La curva de secado se ajustó a un modelo matemático exponencial en función de la constante de secado y la humedad en equilibrio a una temperatura de 90 °C. El régimen de secado del sólido presentó un período de velocidad de secado decreciente hasta un valor de humedad de 0,021 kg de agua / kg de sólido seco, para valores inferiores presentó una desviación de la función exponencial en su velocidad. El aprovechamiento de las cáscaras de huevo residuales resultó ser una fuente atractiva de carbonato de calcio con potencialidades para su utilización en la elaboración de suplemento alimenticio para aves de corral.

Abstract This work aimed to show which treatments showed efficacy against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); therefore, the results of 37 clinical trials started in 2020 and completed in 2021 are reviewed and discussed here. These were selected from databases, excluding vaccines, computational studies, in silico, in vitro, and those with hyperimmune sera from recovered patients. We found 34 drugs, one vitamin, and one herbal remedy with pharmacological activity against symptomatic COVID-19. They reduced mortality, disease progression, or recovery time. For each treatment, the identifier and type of trial, the severity of the disease, the sponsor, the country where the trial was conducted, and the trial results are presented. The drugs were classified according to their mechanism of action. Several drugs that reduced mortality also reduced inflammation in the most severe cases. These include some that are not considered anti-inflammatory, such as Aviptadil, pyridostigmine bromide, anakinra, imatinib, baricitinib, and bevacizumab, as well as the combination of ivermectin, aspirin, dexamethasone, and enoxaparin. Nigella sativa seeds with honey have also been reported to have therapeutic activity. On the other hand, tofacitinib, novaferon with ritonavir, and lopinavir were also effective, as well as in combination with antiviral therapies such as danoprevir with ritonavir. The natural products colchicine and Vitamin D3 were only effective in patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19, as was hydroxychloroquine. Drug repositioning has been the main tool in the search for effective therapies by expanding the pharmacological options available to patients.

Resumen El objetivo del presente trabajo fue conocer qué tratamientos mostraron efectividad contra COVID-19, para lo cual se revisan y discuten los resultados de 37 estudios clínicos iniciados durante 2020 y concluidos en 2021. Estos fueron seleccionados de bases de datos, excluyendo vacunas, estudios computacionales, in silico, in vitro y con sueros hiperinmunes de pacientes recuperados. Se documentaron 34 fármacos, una vitamina y un remedio herbolario, con actividad farmacológica ante COVID-19 sintomático. Estos redujeron la mortalidad, el progreso de la enfermedad, o el tiempo de recuperación. Para cada tratamiento se presenta identificador y tipo de estudio, la gravedad de la enfermedad, patrocinador, país donde se realizó, así como sus resultados. Los fármacos se clasificaron de acuerdo con su mecanismo de acción. Varios fármacos que redujeron la mortalidad también disminuyeron la inflamación en los casos más graves. Esto incluyendo algunos no considerados antiinflamatorios, como el aviptadil, el bromuro de piridostigmina, el anakinra, el imatinib, el baricitinib y el bevacizumab, así como la combinación de ivermectina, aspirina, dexametasona y enoxaparina. También se reportaron con actividad terapéutica las semillas de Nigella sativa con miel. Además, resultaron efectivos el tofacitinib, el novaferón con ritonavir y lopinavir, así como los antivirales en terapias combinadas como el danoprevir con ritonavir. Los productos naturales colchicina y vitamina D3, solo tuvieron actividad en los pacientes en estado leve a moderado de la COVID-19, así como la hidroxicloroquina. El reposicionamiento de fármacos fue la principal herramienta para buscar terapias efectivas ampliando las opciones farmacológicas accesibles a los pacientes.

Abstract: Older women’s political agency has not been widely explored in the literature on ageing. In general, this group has been researched from the ageing characteristics perspective-decay, fragility, adaptive processes-or considering those dimensions in which their capacity for agency lessens ageing symptoms. However, the implications and political character of their practices tends to be ignored. This scoping review examines the approaches to older women’s political agency found in the 1975-2020 academic production. We conducted this scoping review according to PRISMA-ScR guidelines and Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) methodological framework. Sixty-five articles were included in the revision and a full thematic content analysis of the selected corpus was conducted. Qualitative methods were incorporated in 75 % of the examined articles that were conducted in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Diverse approaches to the topic of political agency were identified with community participation, activism, and trajectories of coping and resilience standing out. The relational and collective character of the processes of agency are paramount in the specific strategies that women develop to face vital transitions. Older women’s political agency takes place in a range of social spaces, having a relevant impact at the social-public and the domestic level. A situated characterization of political agency in older women can help guide and redefine public actions, contributing to a greater recognition of these women’s experiences, actions, and contributions.

Resumen: La agencia política de las mujeres adultas mayores ha sido escasamente explorada en la literatura científica. En general, este grupo suele ser investigado desde las características del envejecimiento -deterioro, fragilidad, procesos adaptativos- o desde aquellas dimensiones donde su capacidad de agencia aminora los síntomas del envejecer. No obstante, el carácter político e implicativo de sus prácticas suele ser ignorado. Este estudio describe el abordaje de las conceptualizaciones existentes en torno a las mujeres adultas mayores y agencia política desde la producción académica entre los años 1975-2020, que identifica temas clave, las dimensiones desarrolladas, así como los desafíos futuros. Realizamos esta revisión exploratoria, que sigue las orientaciones PRISMA-ScR y la propuesta metodológica de Arksey y O'Malley (2005). Sesenta y cinco artículos fueron incluidos en la revisión y se realizó un análisis de contenido temático del corpus seleccionado. Un 75 % de los artículos incorporaron métodos cualitativos y se concentraron en países como Canadá, Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido. Se identificaron diversas formas para abordar la agencia política, donde destacaron la participación comunitaria, el activismo y las trayectorias de afrontamiento y resiliencia. Las mujeres mayores desarrollan estrategias específicas para enfrentar las transiciones vitales, donde el carácter colectivo y relacional de los procesos de agenciamiento son centrales. La agencia política se realiza en diferentes espacios contextuales; su incidencia destaca tanto a nivel público-social, como a nivel doméstico. La descripción situada de los procesos de agenciamiento político de las mujeres mayores puede orientar y redefinir las acciones públicas, de cara a un mayor reconocimiento de sus experiencias, acciones y contribuciones.

Abstract: At the urban margins, material precariousness and spatial segregation shape the lives of the poorest. Some studies highlight the role of the neoliberal state in producing these problems. This qualitative investigation carried out in the outskirts of Santiago de Chile analyzes the narratives and practices that shape neoliberal policies in the field of housing and education. The results show that public policies mobilize formal and informal territorial practices that, in an ambivalent way, manage poverty through an assistance-based approach and at the same time seek to produce subjects responsible for their own development and well-being.

Resumen: En los márgenes urbanos, la precariedad material y la segregación espacial moldean la vida de los más pobres. Algunos estudios destacan el rol que ha tenido el Estado neoliberal en su producción. En esta investigación, mediante un estudio cualitativo realizado en la periferia de Santiago de Chile, se indaga en las narrativas y las prácticas que configuran las políticas neoliberales en el campo de la vivienda y la educación. Los resultados muestran que las políticas públicas movilizan prácticas territoriales formales e informales que, de manera ambivalente, gestionan asistencialmente la pobreza al mismo tiempo que buscan producir sujetos responsables de su desarrollo y bienestar.

The acute respiratory illness caused by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has spread throughout the world, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Objectives: To assess clinical and laboratory variables measured at hospital admission associated with clinically relevant adverse outcomes in patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia caused by coronavirus SARSCoV-2. Methods: We conducted a descriptive prospective study in adult patients hospitalized due to COVID-19-associated pneumonia at the UC Christus Health Network. The adverse events examined were ICU admission, need for mechanical ventilation, prolonged length of stay, and hospital mortality. We analyzed predictive variables using univariate and multivariate analysis in a logistic regression model. Results: We evaluated 710 COVID-19-associated pneumonia hospitalized patients aged 59 ± 17 years; 55% were males. 76% of the cohort presented comorbidities, mainly hypertension (45%), diabetes (24%), and hypothyroidism (10%); 42% of the cohort received treatment in critical care units, 16.3% required mechanical ventilation, the mean hospital stay was 15 days, and 11.4% died in the hospital. Age, comorbidities, especially cardiovascular, metabolic, and chronic kidney disease, altered mental status and vital signs (tachypnea, hypoxemia) at hospital admission, renal failure, and elevated biomarkers of systemic inflammation were associated with ICU admission, prolonged hospital stay, and death. Men had a higher risk of ICU admission, connection to mechanical ventilation, and prolonged hospital stay but did not have higher fatalities. Conclusion: Age, male sex, comorbidities, altered mental status and vital signs, renal dysfunction, and elevation of inflammatory parameters were associated with a higher risk of severe COVID-19. These may serve as useful baseline parameters in developing prediction tools for COVID-19 prognosis.

RESUMEN La enfermedad respiratoria aguda por coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) se ha extendido por el mundo, ocasionando morbilidad y mortalidad significativas. Objetivos: Examinar las variables clínicas y de laboratorio medidas en la admisión al hospital que permiten predecir eventos adversos clínicamente relevantes en pacientes adultos hospitalizados por neumonía adquirida en la comunidad por coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Métodos: Estudio clínico prospectivo realizado en pacientes adultos hospitalizados por neumonía asociada a COVID-19 atendidos en Red de Salud UC Christus. Los eventos adversos examinados fueron la admisión a UTIM/UCI, necesidad de ventilación mecánica, estadía prolongada y mortalidad en el hospital. Las variables predictoras fueron sometidas a análisis univariado y multivariado en un modelo de regresión logística Resultados: Se evaluaron 710 pacientes hospitalizados por NAC asociada a COVID-19, edad: 59 ± 17 años, 55% varones, 76% tenía comorbilidades, especialmente hipertensión (45%), diabetes (24%) e hipotiroidismo (10%); 42% fueron manejados en UTIM/UCI, 16,3% requirieron ventilación mecánica, la estadía media en el hospital fue 15 días y 11,4% fallecieron en el hospital. La edad, comorbilidades, especialmente cardiovascular, metabólica y renal crónica, alteración estado mental y signos vitales (taquipnea, hipoxemia), falla renal y los biomarcadores de inflamación sistémica se asociaron a mayor riesgo de admisión a unidad de paciente crítico, estadía prolongada y muerte en el hospital. Los varones tuvieron mayor riesgo de admisión a UTIM/UCI, conexión a ventilador mecánico y estancia prolongada en el hospital, pero no tuvieron mayor letalidad. Conclusión: La edad, sexo masculino, comorbilidades, alteración del estado mental y signos vitales, disfunción renal y elevación de los parámetros inflamatorios permitió predecir el riesgo de complicaciones y muerte en pacientes adultos hospitalizados por neumonía asociada a COVID-19.

Abstract: Prejudices about old age transcend different spheres of everyday life, with eroticism and sexuality being dimensions that are socially associated with a restriction of pleasure and enjoyment, mainly due to cultural changes that restrict this stage being considered from a sexual point of view. However, the exercise of erotic-sexual capacities acquires a relevant place in life experiences, as it is related to the right to live an old age in greater plenitude. The different visions of the erotic life of this age group are produced and reproduced in the social fabric through different media, with the cinema, given its massiveness and creative capacity, being an important space for recognising the construction of representations that operate on a social level. In this regard, this documentary study addresses the eroticism of older people in contemporary Chilean cinema, describing three dominant social representations: ‘The dirty old man: conquering a young person’; ‘Old men who remember: the eroticism that comes from the past’; and ‘Old Seductresses: in search of male desire’. The representations show a greater permissiveness in terms of the expression and experience of eroticism in older men, while women’s experience is subordinated to the dominant male desire. Nevertheless, through film, it is revealed as a possibility for older women to move towards a position of greater autonomy and independence in the experience of their sexuality.

Resumen: Los prejuicios sobre la vejez trascienden distintas esferas de la cotidianeidad, siendo el erotismo y la sexualidad dimensiones que socialmente se asocian a una restricción del placer y el goce, principalmente por los cambios culturales que restringen que esta etapa sea considerada desde la sexualidad. Sin embargo, el ejercicio de las capacidades erótico-sexuales adquiere un lugar relevante en las experiencias de vida, pues se relaciona con el derecho a vivir una vejez en mayor plenitud. Las distintas visiones sobre la vida erótica de este grupo etario se producen y reproducen en el entramado social por distintos medios, siendo el cine, dada su masividad y su capacidad creativa, un espacio importante para reconocer la construcción de representaciones que operan a nivel social. Al respecto, el presente estudio documental aborda el erotismo de las personas mayores en el cine chileno contemporáneo, describiendo tres representaciones sociales dominantes: ‘El viejo verde: conquistando a una persona joven’; ‘Viejos/as que recuerdan: el erotismo que deviene del pasado’; y ‘Viejas Seductoras: en la búsqueda del deseo masculino’. Las representaciones dan cuenta de una mayor permisividad en cuanto a la expresión y vivencia del erotismo en el hombre mayor, mientras que la experiencia de las mujeres se ve supeditada al deseo masculino dominante. No obstante, a través del cine se revela como una posibilidad de vida el que las mujeres mayores puedan transitar hacia una posición de mayor autonomía e independencia para vivir su sexualidad.

Abstract Introduction: currently, various tools have been designed to timely detect the risk of malnutrition in hospitalized children. In those with a diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD), there is only one tool developed in Canada: Infant Malnutrition and Feeding Checklist for Congenital Heart Disease (IMFC:CHD), which was designed in English. Objective: to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Spanish adaptation of the IMFC:CHD tool in infants with CHD. Methods: cross-sectional validation study carried out in two stages. The first, of translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the tool, and the second, of validation of the new translated tool, where evidence of reliability and validity were obtained. Results: in the first stage, the tool was translated and adapted to the Spanish language; for the second stage, 24 infants diagnosed with CHD were included. The concurrent criterion validity between the screening tool and the anthropometric evaluation was evaluated, obtaining a substantial agreement (κ = 0.660, 95 % CI: 0.36-0.95) and for the predictive criterion validity, which was compared with the days of hospital stay, moderate agreement was obtained (κ = 0.489, 95 % CI: 0.1-0.8). The reliability of the tool was evaluated through external consistency, measuring the inter-observer agreement, obtaining a substantial agreement (κ = 0.789, 95 % CI: 0.5-0.9), and the reproducibility of the tool showed an almost perfect agreement (κ = 1, CI 95 %: 0.9-1.0). Conclusions: the IMFC:CHD tool showed adequate validity and reliability, and could be considered as a useful resource for the identification of severe malnutrition.

Resumen Introducción: actualmente, se han diseñado diversas herramientas para detectar oportunamente el riesgo de desnutrición en niños hospitalizados. En aquellos con diagnóstico de cardiopatías congénitas (CC), solo existe una herramienta desarrollada en Canadá, llamada Infant Malnutrition and Feeding Checklist for Congenital Heart Disease (IMFC:CHD), la cual fue diseñada en idioma inglés. Objetivo: evaluar la validez y confiabilidad de la adaptación en español de la herramienta IMFC:CHD en lactantes con CC. Métodos: estudio transversal de validación realizado en dos etapas: la primera, de traducción y adaptación transcultural de la herramienta; y la segunda, de validación de la nueva herramienta traducida, donde se obtuvieron las evidencias de confiabilidad y validez. Resultados: en la primera etapa se obtuvo la herramienta traducida y adaptada al idioma español; para la segunda etapa se incluyeron 24 lactantes con diagnóstico de CC. Se evaluó la validez de criterio concurrente entre la herramienta de tamizaje y la evaluación antropométrica, obteniéndose un acuerdo sustancial (κ = 0,660, IC 95 %: 0,36-0,95). Para la validez de criterio predictiva, la cual fue comparada con los días de estancia hospitalaria, se obtuvo un acuerdo moderado (κ = 0,489, IC 95 %: 0,1-0,8). La confiabilidad de la herramienta se evaluó mediante consistencia externa, midiendo la concordancia interobservador, y se obtuvo un acuerdo sustancial (κ = 0,789, IC 95 %: 0,5-0,9); la reproducibilidad de la herramienta mostró un acuerdo casi perfecto (κ = 1, IC 95 %: 0,9-1,0). Conclusiones: la herramienta IMFC:CHD mostró una adecuada validez y confiabilidad, por lo que podría considerarse un recurso útil para la identificación de desnutrición grave.

Resumen De acuerdo con la FAO, aproximadamente un tercio de la producción mundial de alimentos se pierde o desperdicia. Estos desperdicios reducen la disponibilidad de alimentos para la población, incrementan sus precios y generan problemas de contaminación ambiental. Un problema común en los países en desarrollo es la escasez de datos acerca de la cantidad, causas y usos de las pérdidas de alimentos. En este trabajo se realizó la cuantificación, por etapas de siembra, de las pérdidas de melón cantaloupe, sus causas y usos en los eslabones de producción, empaque y transportación en una región del norte-centro de México conocida como la Comarca Lagunera. Esta región es la mayor productora de melón cantaloupe de México con una superficie de más de 4 565 ha y una producción de 165 663 t. Se aplicó, de manera presencial, un cuestionario estructurado a una muestra estadística de 47 productores y ocho empacadores. Se encontró que las pérdidas, tanto en producción como en los empaques, varían de acuerdo con la etapa de siembra, con mayores pérdidas en las siembras tardías, seguido por las tempranas e intermedias. Las principales causas de las pérdidas son el tamaño de fruto inadecuado (pequeño o muy grande), deforme, excesiva madurez, manchado y con rajaduras. El producto que se desperdicia en la huerta es destinado a la alimentación de animales domésticos o como abono a la tierra; mientras que el que se desecha en los empaques se revende a pequeños intermediarios locales para su comercialización y para la alimentación de animales domésticos.

Abstract According to FAO, about one-third of global food production is lost or wasted. This waste reduces the availability of foods for the population, increases their prices and generates problems of environmental pollution. A common problem in developing countries is the scarcity of data on the quantity, causes and uses of food losses. In this work, the quantification, by sowing stages, of the losses of cantaloupe melon, their causes and uses in the links of production, packaging and transportation in a region of North-Central Mexico known as the Comarca Lagunera was carried out. This region is the largest producer of cantaloupe melon in Mexico, with an area of more than 4 565 ha and a production of 165 663 t. A structured questionnaire was applied in person to a statistical sample of 47 producers and eight packers. It was found that losses, both in production and packaging, vary according to the sowing stage, with greater losses in late sowings, followed by early and intermediate sowings. The main causes of losses are inadequate fruit size (small or very large), deformed, overripe, spotted and cracked. The product that is wasted in the orchard is destined to feed domestic animals or as fertilizer to the land; while the one that is discarded in the packaging centers is resold to small local intermediaries for commercialization and for the feeding of domestic animals.

Abstract The high nutritional value of brassicas can increase productivity in traditional forage production systems. The objective of the study was to compare the nutritional value and yield of dry matter (DM) and nutrients between forage brassicas and traditional autumn-winter species. The forage brassicas were Winfred, Hunter and Graza radish and the traditional forages were oats, triticale, barley, wheat and berseem clover. The study was conducted in Matamoros, Coahuila, Mexico in the 2018-2019 cycle, under a randomized complete block experimental design with four repetitions. The regrowth capacity, the nutritional composition of the forage and the yields of DM and nutrients were determined. All species showed regrowth capacity, with three cuts in berseem clover in 154 d, and with two cuts in brassicas (150-154 d) and cereals (133-144 d). The brassicas had nutritional composition similar to that of berseem clover and better than that of cereals, mainly due to their higher content of net energy of lactation (NEL; 6.57 to 7.32 MJ kg-1 DM). The DM yields of the brassicas were similar to those observed in traditional forages; however, due to their high nutritional composition, the brassicas were equal to or superior in production of crude protein (CP) (1,608 to 2,986 kg ha-1) and NEL (62,819 to 84,044 MJ ha-1) to traditional forages. In general, forage brassicas can increase nutrient yield with respect to cereals and berseem clover, especially in the production of NEL (27.5 to 47.3 %).

Resumen El alto valor nutritivo de las brásicas puede incrementar la productividad en los sistemas de producción de forrajes tradicionales. El objetivo del estudio fue comparar el valor nutricional y el rendimiento de materia seca (MS) y nutrientes entre brásicas forrajeras y especies tradicionales de otoño-invierno. Las brásicas forrajeras fueron Winfred, Hunter y rábano Graza y los forrajes tradicionales fueron avena, triticale, cebada, trigo y el trébol Alejandrino. El estudio se realizó en Matamoros, Coahuila, México en el ciclo 2018-2019, bajo un diseño experimental de bloques completos al azar con cuatro repeticiones. Se determinó la capacidad de rebrote, la composición nutricional del forraje y los rendimientos de MS y nutrientes. Todas las especies presentaron capacidad de rebrote, con tres cortes en trébol Alejandrino en 154 días, y con dos cortes en brásicas (150-154 días) y cereales (133-144 días). Las brásicas presentaron similar composición nutricional al trébol Alejandrino y mejor al de los cereales, principalmente por su mayor contenido de energía neta para lactancia (ENL; 6.57 a 7.32 MJ kg-1 MS). Los rendimientos de MS de las brásicas fueron similares a los observados en los forrajes tradicionales; sin embargo, por su alta composición nutricional las brásicas fueron iguales o superiores en producción de proteína cruda (PC) (1,608 a 2,986 kg ha-1) y ENL (62,819 a 84,044 MJ ha-1) a los forrajes tradicionales. En general, las brásicas forrajeras pueden incrementar el rendimiento de nutrientes respecto a los cereales y al trébol Alejandrino, especialmente en la producción de ENL (27.5 a 47.3 %).

Abstract The interest in understanding the role of the university teacher in today’s society implies analyzing the didactic decisions that guide their work for the development of professional, social and technological skills. In this framework, the present study aimed to identify the scientific production related to the application of didactic models, mediated by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), in the context of university education. Through a mixed analysis, with the application of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, a search was carried out from the five moments of the systematic review process, where a total of eighty-nine articles published in different high-impact journals were obtained. The results show the effort of teachers to implement some models based on the use of ICT resources and tools, compared to the poor command of didactic and technological skills for the construction of this type of strategy. Within a pragmatic perspective of education, this article proposes the challenges assumed by teachers to reformulate their practices, amid the dynamics of a transhumanist world located in the new ecology of knowledge. Resumen El interés por comprender el rol del docente universitario en la sociedad actual implica analizar las decisiones didácticas que orientan su quehacer para el desarrollo de competencias profesionales, sociales y tecnológicas. En este marco, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar la producción científica relacionada con la aplicación de modelos didácticos, mediados por las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TIC), en el contexto de la enseñanza universitaria. A través de un análisis mixto, con la aplicación de metodologías cualitativas y cuantitativas, se realizó una búsqueda desde los cinco momentos del proceso de revisión sistemática, donde se obtuvo un total de ochenta y nueve artículos publicados en diferentes revistas de alto impacto. Los resultados evidencian el esfuerzo del profesorado por implementar algunos modelos basados en el uso de recursos y herramientas TIC, frente al escaso dominio de las competencias didácticas y tecnológicas para la construcción de este tipo de estrategias. Dentro de una perspectiva pragmática de la educación, en este artículo se proponen los desafíos asumidos por los docentes para reformular sus prácticas, en medio de las dinámicas de un mundo transhumanista ubicado en la nueva ecología del conocimiento. Abstract This study establishes the serological frequency against Neospora caninum on day zero and the presence of N. caninum DNA surveyed throughout the gestation of Bubalus bubalis females in a bovine buffalo system in the central zone of the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Blood samples were taken from 11 females in 6 different sampling periods and analyzed for N. caninum antibodies detection on day zero. DNA detection by PCR was performed on all sampling periods. The gestation months of the females were recorded for five trimesters by ultrasonography, as well as births and pregnancy losses. Recorded seropositivity and positivity for agent DNA were 90.9% (95% CI 58.7-9.7) and 36.3% (95% CI 10.9-69.2), respectively, on day zero. N. caninum DNA was detected between 18.1% (95% CI 2.3-51.7) and 45.4% (95% CI 16.7-76.6) over the five trimesters of observation, with three births and three abortions recorded. The studied water buffalo population had a high presence of N. caninum antibodies; however, the detection of N. caninum DNA remained below 47% in the females. The association was only observed in the detection of DNA with pregnant females (P 0.007). Our results support the hypothesis of the resistance of water buffaloes to infection and the onset of clinical signs against infection by N. caninum even upon a high possibility of infection and reinfection described in this production system in Mexico. Abstract Background Despite representing the largest fraction of animal life, the number of insect species whose genome has been sequenced is barely in the hundreds. The order Dermaptera (the earwigs) suffers from a lack of genomic information despite its unique position as one of the basally derived insect groups and its importance in agroecosystems. As part of a national educational and outreach program in genomics, a plan was formulated to engage the participation of high school students in a genome sequencing project. Students from twelve schools across Chile were instructed to capture earwig specimens in their geographical area, to identify them and to provide material for genome sequencing to be carried out by themselves in their schools. Results The school students collected specimens from two cosmopolitan earwig species: Euborellia annulipes (Fam. Anisolabididae) and Forficula auricularia (Fam. Forficulidae). Genomic DNA was extracted and, with the help of scientific teams that traveled to the schools, was sequenced using nanopore sequencers. The sequence data obtained for both species was assembled and annotated. We obtained genome sizes of 1.18 Gb (F. auricularia) and 0.94 Gb (E. annulipes) with the number of predicted protein coding genes being 31,800 and 40,000, respectively. Our analysis showed that we were able to capture a high percentage (≥ 93%) of conserved proteins indicating genomes that are useful for comparative and functional analysis. We were also able to characterize structural elements such as repetitive sequences and non-coding RNA genes. Finally, functional categories of genes that are overrepresented in each species suggest important differences in the process underlying the formation of germ cells, and modes of reproduction between them, features that are one of the distinguishing biological properties that characterize these two distant families of Dermaptera. Conclusions This work represents an unprecedented instance where the scientific and lay community have come together to collaborate in a genome sequencing project. The versatility and accessibility of nanopore sequencers was key to the success of the initiative. We were able to obtain full genome sequences of two important and widely distributed species of insects which had not been analyzed at this level previously. The data made available by the project should illuminate future studies on the Dermaptera.

Abstract Mexico is a honey-producing country, paradoxically, its per capita consumption is low compared to European countries. The objective was to make a typology of honey consumers in Mexico with a minimum educational level of bachelor’s degree in ages from 20 to 60 years and to determine their socioeconomic characteristics and aspects that motivate consumption. A questionnaire was applied to a sample of 1,003 honey consumers who met the conditions of age and school level. The information was analyzed using cluster and discriminant analysis. Three types of consumers were identified: 1) educated consumers with average income (34.4 %), they were those who consume honey frequently, have extensive knowledge about beekeeping by-products and honey properties, prefer to buy the product from beekeepers; 2) highly educated consumers with high income (25.8 %), most of them have postgraduate degrees and receive income greater than $5,000 per week, they were people of mature age and with moderate consumption of honey, a third of this group only know honey, have knowledge of its properties and qualities, they are indifferent to the place of purchase; and 3) educated consumers with low income (39.8 %), it grouped young consumers who only have a bachelor’s degree, their consumption is moderate, they prefer to buy the product in markets. The groups of consumers formed provide information on a segment of the honey market in Mexico, it is necessary to continue conducting research on issues related to consumption and preference of honey consumers in Mexico.

Resumen México es un país productor de miel, paradójicamente, su consumo per cápita es bajo comparado con los países europeos. El objetivo fue realizar una tipología a consumidores de miel en México con nivel educativo mínimo de licenciatura en edades de 20 a 60 años y determinar sus características socioeconómicas y aspectos que motivan el consumo. Se aplicó un cuestionario a una muestra de 1,003 consumidores de miel que cumplieran con las condiciones de edad y nivel escolar. La información se analizó mediante análisis de conglomerados y discriminante. Se identificaron tres tipos de consumidores: 1) consumidores educados con ingresos promedio (34.4 %), fueron los que consumen miel frecuentemente, tienen un amplio conocimiento sobre los subproductos de la apicultura y propiedades de la miel, prefieren comprar el producto con los apicultores; 2) consumidores altamente educados con ingresos altos (25.8 %), en su mayoría tienen posgrado y reciben ingresos mayores a $5,000 semanales, fueron personas en edad madura y con consumo moderado de miel, una tercera parte de este grupo solo conocen la miel, tienen conocimiento de sus propiedades y cualidades, les es indiferente el lugar de compra; y 3) consumidores educados con ingreso bajo (39.8 %), agrupó a consumidores jóvenes que solo tienen nivel de licenciatura, su consumo es moderado, prefieren comprar el producto en mercados. Los grupos de consumidores conformados brindan información sobre un segmento del mercado de la miel en México, es necesario continuar realizando investigaciones sobre temas referentes a consumo y preferencia de los consumidores de miel en México.
