ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the scientific evidence on the impacts caused by the use of screens during the COVID-19 pandemic in children and adolescents, raising reflections for future interventions with this public. Data source: This is an integrative literature review, conducted in the databases Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase, published from March 2020 to January 2022, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Data synthesis: The search strategies allowed retrieving 418 articles, of which 218 were duplicates. The analysis of titles and abstracts resulted in the maintenance of 62 studies. Of these, 31 were excluded from the reading of the full text, since they did not clearly present the phenomenon investigated. Thirty-one were eligible, resulting in five categories: eye consequences; increased sedentary behavior and weight; change in eating habits; implications for sleep quality and impacts on mental health. Conclusions: The excessive use of screens during the pandemic led to numerous consequences for children and adolescents, with a higher incidence of visual damage, sedentary lifestyle, inadequate eating habit and increased weight gain, in addition to impaired sleep quality and mental health. This study provides subsidy for health professionals to carry out continuing education focused on this theme, and elaborate effective interventions for this public in this transition to the post-pandemic period.

RESUMO Objetivo: Identificar as evidências científicas sobre os impactos causados pelo uso de telas durante a pandemia da COVID-19 em crianças e adolescentes, almejando reflexões para futuras intervenções com esse público. Fontes de dados: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, realizada nas bases de dados Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scopus, Web of Science e Embase, publicados de março de 2020 a janeiro de 2022, em português, inglês e espanhol. Síntese dos dados: As estratégias de busca possibilitaram recuperar 418 artigos, sendo 218 duplicados. A análise de títulos e resumos resultou na manutenção de 62 estudos. Destes, após a leitura do texto integral foram excluídos 31, uma vez que não apresentavam com clareza o fenômeno investigado. Foram elegíveis 31 estudos, emergindo cinco categorias: consequências oculares; aumento do comportamento sedentário e do peso; alteração dos hábitos alimentares; implicações na qualidade do sono e impactos na saúde mental. Conclusões: Percebe-se que o uso telas em excesso durante a pandemia trouxe inúmeras consequências para o público infantojuvenil, com maior incidência de acometimentos visuais, sedentarismo, alimentação inadequada e, por consequência, maior ganho de peso, além de prejuízos à qualidade do sono e à saúde mental. Este estudo fornece subsídios para que os profissionais da saúde realizem educação continuada voltada para essa temática e elaborem intervenções efetivas para esse público nesta transição para o período pós-pandêmico.

Resumo Objetivos: O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a prevalência das lesões de cavidade oral e estruturas anexas, em pacientes pediátricos em dois centros de referência. Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo transversal, descritivo, observacional, retrospectivo em que foram pesquisados arquivos em dois centros de referência. Foram coletadas as variáveis: sexo, idade, localização da lesão, tempo de evolução, hipótese diagnóstica, diagnóstico definitivo e recidiva. A análise descritiva foi realizada por meio de médias e proporções. Também foi avaliada a associação das variáveis do estudo com as categorias diagnósticas e faixa etária, tendo sido considerados significativos valores de p<0,05. Resultados: A distribuição entre os sexos foi semelhante. A idade variou de 3 meses a 18,9 anos (média 11,8 anos), a faixa etária mais acometida foi 13 a 18 anos, 12 recidivas foram achadas. As lesões mais prevalentes foram mucocele, cisto dentígero e odontoma. Conclusões: O conhecimento das lesões orais mais frequentes em pacientes pediátricos contribui para o diagnóstico precoce e manejo adequado de cada caso.

Abstract Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of diseases of the oral cavity and adjacent structures in pediatric patients at two reference centers. Methods: A retrospective, transversal, observational, descriptive study was conducted. Files from two referral centers were searched for pediatric oral lesions. The following data were collected: sex, age, location of the lesion, evolution time, diagnostic hypothesis, definitive diagnosis, and recurrence. Descriptive analysis was performed using means and proportions. The association of study variables with diagnostic categories and age groups was investigated, with p values <0.05 considered significant. Results: The sex distribution was similar. Patients were aged 3 months to 18.9 years (mean 11.8 years old), and the most affected age group was 13 to 18 years. Only 12 lesions recurred. The most prevalent lesions from the three most common categories were mucocele, dentigerous cyst, and odontoma. Conclusions: If dentists can diagnose and treat the most common lesions found in children and adolescents, they can probably manage correctly more than half of the cases involving pediatric patients.

ABSTRACT Endive is a vegetable traditionally eaten as a raw or cooked salad. It is a source of important nutritional compounds and one of the procedures for its industrialization is drying, which increases its shelf life, preserves the nutrients and reduces losses due to microorganisms. This research evaluated the drying kinetic of endive leaves at different temperatures and adjusted the experimental data according to mathematical models. The experimental design was completely randomized in triplicate, with each sample unit being a perforated aluminum tray containing about 100 g fresh leaves. The endive leaves were dried in an oven at 50, 60, 70 and 80°C. The mathematical models were adjusted according to the experimental data; non-linear regression analysis was performed by Gauss-Newton and Quasi-Newton methods. In all conditions, the mathematical models that best fitted the drying kinetics of the endive leaves were Midilli, Logarithmic and Valcam. The Logarithmic model, under these drying conditions, can be accurately described as suitable for predicting and simulating the drying kinetic of endive leaves, as it showed the best results in the statistical parameters evaluated.

RESUMO Chicória é um vegetal tradicionalmente consumido como salada crua ou cozida. É uma fonte de importantes compostos nutricionais e um dos procedimentos para sua industrialização é a secagem, que aumenta a vida útil, preserva seus nutrientes e reduz as perdas por microrganismos. Esta pesquisa avaliou a cinética de secagem de folhas de chicória em diferentes temperaturas e ajustou os dados experimentais de acordo com modelos matemáticos. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em triplicata, onde cada unidade amostral era uma bandeja de alumínio perfurada, contendo cerca de 100 g de folhas frescas. As folhas de chicória foram secas em estufa, a 50, 60, 70 e 80°C. Os modelos matemáticos foram ajustados de acordo com os dados experimentais e, a partir deles, a análise de regressão não-linear foi realizada pelos métodos de Gauss-Newton e Quasi-Newton. Em todas as condições, os modelos matemáticos que melhor se ajustaram à cinética de secagem das folhas de chicória foram o Midilli, o Logarítmico e o Valcam. O modelo logarítmico, nessas condições de secagem, pode ser descrito com precisão como adequado para prever e simular a cinética de secagem das folhas de chicória, pois apresentou melhores resultados nos parâmetros estatísticos avaliados.

Abstract In this paper we investigate the discursive representations of abortion and women who had abortions within the journalistic practice. Among the various facets of the subject, in this paper we will discuss the legal or decriminalized practice in Brazil. For this, we selected seven texts from Revista AzMina. We undertook a theoretical-methodological analysis based on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001, 2003, 2013). The results show that abortion is represented as a field of legal dispute, it is sometimes legal, sometimes illegal and completely depends on decisions that go beyond those that women themselves can make. AzMina’s reports aim either to provide guidance on rights, or to humanize the theme by presenting it from the voices of women involved in this practice.

Resumo Neste artigo, investigamos como o aborto e as mulheres que abortaram são representados discursivamente na prática jornalística. Dentre as várias facetas da temática, discutiremos, neste trabalho, a prática legal ou despenalizada no Brasil. Para isso, selecionamos sete reportagens da Revista AzMina, um veículo independente de jornalismo digital. Empreendemos uma análise fundamentada teórico-metodologicamente na Análise de Discurso Crítica (ADC) (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001, 2003, 2013). Os resultados apontam que o aborto é representado como campo de disputa jurídica, em certos momentos é legal, em outros, ilegal, e isso depende completamente de decisões que vão além das que as próprias mulheres podem tomar. As reportagens da AzMina visam ora a orientação sobre direitos, ora a humanização da temática ao apresentá-la a partir de vozes de mulheres envolvidas nessa prática.

Abstract Objective: To provide guidelines on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination in patients with immune-mediated rheumatic diseases (IMRD) to rheumatologists considering specific scenarios of the daily practice based on the shared-making decision (SMD) process. Methods: A task force was constituted by 24 rheumatologists (panel members), with clinical and research expertise in immunizations and infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients, endorsed by the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology (BSR), to develop guidelines for COVID-19 vaccination in patients with IMRD. A consensus was built through the Delphi method and involved four rounds of anonymous voting, where five options were used to determine the level of agreement (LOA), based on the Likert Scale: (1) strongly disagree; (2) disagree, (3) neither agree nor disagree (neutral); (4) agree; and (5) strongly agree. Nineteen questions were addressed and discussed via teleconference to formulate the answers. In order to identify the relevant data on COVID-19 vaccines, a search with standardized descriptors and synonyms was performed on September 10th, 2021, of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, ClinicalTrials.gov, and LILACS to identify studies of interest. We used the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale to assess the quality of nonrandomized studies. Results: All the nineteen questions-answers (Q&A) were approved by the BSR Task Force with more than 80% of panelists voting options 4—agree—and 5—strongly agree—, and a consensus was reached. These Guidelines were focused in SMD on the most appropriate timing for IMRD patients to get vaccinated to reach the adequate covid-19 vaccination response. Conclusion: These guidelines were developed by a BSR Task Force with a high LOA among panelists, based on the literature review of published studies and expert opinion for COVID-19 vaccination in IMRD patients. Noteworthy, in the pandemic period, up to the time of the review and the consensus process for this document, high-quality evidence was scarce. Thus, it is not a substitute for clinical judgment.

Resumo Objetivo: sintetizar o conhecimento disponível sobre o impacto de mídias sociais na percepção de solidão e/ou no isolamento social em idosos. Método: revisão integrativa da literatura com estudos primários publicados na íntegra, em português, inglês e espanhol, entre setembro de 2014 e julho de 2020 nas bases de dados American Psychological Association Database, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature, Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências de Saúde, Web of Science e PubMed. Resultados: foram incluídos 11 artigos categorizados com base nos tipos de tecnologias: “o uso da internet”, englobando sites de redes sociais, internet e aplicativos; “dispositivos de comunicação”, com uso de smartphones, tablets e iPads; e “tipos de comunicação”, incluindo meios de comunicação interpessoal na era digital, como videochamadas e e-mails. Houve resultados positivos (63,6%) sobre o uso de mídias sociais para minimizar a percepção de solidão e/ou o isolamento social dos idosos. Conclusão: as evidências científicas demonstraram que o uso de mídias sociais digitais pode reduzir a percepção de solidão e/ou o isolamento em idosos. Ademais, a internet pode favorecer maior contato entre idosos e famílias, servir como fonte de apoio e contribuir para maior senso de pertencimento em uma comunidade e redução da solidão.

Abstract Objective: to synthesize knowledge about the use of social media and the perception of loneliness and/or social isolation in older adults. Method: integrative literature review with primary studies published in full, in Portuguese, English or Spanish, between September 2014 and July 2020 in the databases: American Psychological Association Database, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature databases, Web of Science and PubMed. Results: 11 articles were included, categorized based on the types of technologies: “the use of the Internet”, encompassing social networking sites, the internet and applications; “communication devices”, with the use of smartphones, tablets and iPads and “types of communication” covering the use of interpersonal means of communication in the digital age, such as video calls and emails. There were positive results (63.6%) regarding the use of social media to minimize the perception of loneliness and/or social isolation in the older adults. Conclusion: the scientific evidence shows that the use of digital social media can reduce the perception of loneliness and/or isolation in older adults. Furthermore, the internet can favor greater contact between the older adults and family members and can serve as a source of support, provide a greater sense of belonging in the community and reduce loneliness.

Resumen Objetivo: sintetizar el conocimiento sobre el uso de medios de comunicación social en la percepción de la soledad y/o aislamiento social en personas mayores. Método: revisión integradora de la literatura, con estudios primarios publicados integralmente, en portugués e inglés, entre septiembre de 2014 y julio de 2020, en las bases de datos: American Psychological Association Database, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature, Literatura Latino-Americana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud, Web of Science y PubMed. Resultados: fueron incluidos 11 artículos categorizados con base en los tipos de tecnologías: “el uso de la Internet”, englobando las páginas electrónica de redes sociales, Internet y aplicativos; “dispositivos de comunicación”, con uso de smartphones, tablets e iPads; y, “tipos de comunicación” con uso de medios de comunicación interpersonal en la era digital, tales como, videollamadas y e-mails. Hubo resultados positivos (63,6%) sobre el uso de medios de comunicación social para minimizar la percepción de la soledad y/o el aislamiento social de las personas mayores. Conclusión: las evidencias científicas demostraron que el uso de medios de comunicación social digitales puede reducir la percepción de soledad y/o aislamiento en personas mayores. La Internet puede favorecer un mayor contacto entre personas mayores y sus familias, servir como fuente de apoyo, dar mayor sentido de pertenecer a una comunidad y reducir la soledad.

Abstract The objective was to produce flour from sorghum grains, to determine the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics, and to develop different formulations of cookies, with total and partial replacement of rice flour, evaluating the moisture content, color, expansion factor and texture profile - TPA. Five formulations were processed, as follows: control - 0%; F1 - 25%; F2 - 50%; F3 - 75% and F4 - 100% sorghum flour. The sorghum flour showed physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics in accordance with current legislation, and can be inserted into human food. The different cookie formulations after baking had a moisture content below 7%. With the addition of sorghum flour, the cookies showed lower light F4 – 32.35 L*. The addition of sorghum flour did not affect the expansion factor of the cookies, with average value of 2.13. The different concentrations of sorghum flour, showed interference in analysis of the Texture-TPA profile, the F3 formulation, presented higher values of hardness 25594.44 N, fracturability 251 N, cohesiveness 0.27. Elasticity has not been compromised. The highest values of gumminess 53.08 N, chewability 1471.15 mJ were found in the formulation F4 – 100% FS. These results may help improve the quality of sorghum-based gluten-free foods for celiac consumers.

Abstract Background: Patients using immunosuppressive drugs may have unfavorable results after infections. However, there is a lack of information regarding COVID 19 in these patients, especially in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors associated with COVID 19 hospitalizations in patients with RA. Methods: This multicenter, prospective cohort study is within the ReumaCoV Brazil registry and included 489 patients with RA. In this context, 269 patients who tested positive for COVID 19 were compared to 220 patients who tested negative for COVID 19 (control group). All patient data were collected from the Research Electronic Data Capture database. Results: The participants were predominantly female (90.6%) with a mean age of 53 ±12 years. Of the patients with COVID 19, 54 (20.1%) required hospitalization. After multiple adjustments, the final regression model showed that heart disease (OR =4.61, 95% CI 1.06–20.02. P < 0.001) and current use of glucocorticoids (OR =20.66, 95% CI 3.09–138. P < 0.002) were the risk factors associated with hospitalization. In addition, anosmia was associated with a lower chance of hospitalization (OR =0.26; 95% CI 0.10–0.67, P < 0.005). Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that heart disease and the use of glucocorticoids were associated with a higher number of hospital admissions for COVID 19 in patients with RA. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar desfechos clínicos e fatores associados à mortalidade, com foco em infecções secundárias, em pacientes com COVID-19 em estado crítico em três hospitais brasileiros durante a primeira onda da pandemia. Métodos: Estudo observacional retrospectivo envolvendo pacientes adultos com COVID-19 internados nas UTIs participantes entre março e agosto de 2020. Analisaram-se características clínicas, comorbidades, fonte de infecção por SARS-CoV-2, dados laboratoriais, dados microbiológicos, complicações e causas de óbito. Os fatores associados à mortalidade hospitalar foram avaliados por meio de modelos de regressão logística. Resultados: Foram incluídos 645 pacientes com média de idade de 61,4 anos. Desses, 387 (60,0%) eram do sexo masculino, 12,9% (83/643) haviam sido submetidos a transplante de órgão sólido, e quase 10% (59/641) apresentaram infecção nosocomial por COVID-19. Durante a internação na UTI, 359/644 pacientes (55,7%) necessitaram de ventilação mecânica invasiva, 225 (34,9%) necessitaram de terapia renal substitutiva, 337 (52,2%) receberam vasopressores, e 216 (33,5%) apresentaram infecções hospitalares (IHs), causadas principalmente por bactérias Gram-negativas multirresistentes. As IHs associaram-se de forma independente a maior risco de óbito. As principais causas de óbito foram choque refratário e síndrome de disfunção de múltiplos órgãos, mas não SDRA, como relatado anteriormente na literatura. Conclusões: Neste estudo, a maior parte de nossa coorte necessitou de ventilação mecânica invasiva, e quase um terço apresentou IHs, que se associaram de forma independente a maior risco de óbito. Outros fatores relacionados à mortalidade foram Índice de Comorbidade de Charlson, SOFA na admissão e complicações clínicas durante a internação na UTI. A infecção nosocomial por COVID-19 não se associou à mortalidade. As principais causas imediatas de óbito foram choque refratário e síndrome de disfunção de múltiplos órgãos.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate clinical outcomes and factors associated with mortality, focusing on secondary infections, in critically ill patients with COVID-19 in three Brazilian hospitals during the first pandemic wave. Methods: This was a retrospective observational study involving adult patients with COVID-19 admitted to one of the participating ICUs between March and August of 2020. We analyzed clinical features, comorbidities, source of SARS-CoV-2 infection, laboratory data, microbiology data, complications, and causes of death. We assessed factors associated with in-hospital mortality using logistic regression models. Results: We included 645 patients with a mean age of 61.4 years. Of those, 387 (60.0%) were male, 12.9% (83/643) had undergone solid organ transplant, and almost 10% (59/641) had nosocomial COVID-19 infection. During ICU stay, 359/644 patients (55.7%) required invasive mechanical ventilation, 225 (34.9%) needed renal replacement therapy, 337 (52.2%) received vasopressors, and 216 (33.5%) had hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), mainly caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria. HAIs were independently associated with a higher risk of death. The major causes of death were refractory shock and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome but not ARDS, as previously reported in the literature. Conclusions: In this study, most of our cohort required invasive mechanical ventilation and almost one third had HAIs, which were independently associated with a higher risk of death. Other factors related to death were Charlson Comorbidity Index, SOFA score at admission, and clinical complications during ICU stay. Nosocomial COVID-19 infection was not associated with death. The main immediate causes of death were refractory shock and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of drying treatment on the characteristics physical, chemical, technological properties and bioactive of turmeric flour. The flour was obtained from the drying of rhizomes in a forced air circulation oven at temperatures of 45, 55, 65 and 75 °C. The analyzes performed were: pH, instrumental color, microstructure, granulometry, water and oil absorption indices, water solubility indices, and antioxidant activity. The characteristics of the flours significantly affected were moisture, protein, lipid and ash contents. The antioxidant capacity with the DPPH radical, for flour at the drying temperature of 45 °C, presented the highest value 36.55 Mmol Trolox g-1, and 7686.32 Mmol FeSO4 g-1 the FRAP radical at 65 °C.The phenolic content varied according to the solvent applied to obtain the extract, the mean values of total phenolic compounds for each temperature were: 0.419, 0.332, 0.316, 0.283 mg GAEa 100 g-1for temperatures 45, 55, 65 and 75°C respectively. Water solubility index (WSI) and oil absorption index ranged from 12.45 g g-1 to 11.78 g g-1 and from 2.54 g g-1 to 2.49 g g-1, respectively, for temperatures of 45 °C and 75 °C. The results of the present study indicated that temperature influences the physicochemical and technological properties of turmeric flour.

Abstract The use of unconventional edible plants in human food has grown more widespread in recent years, driven mainly by gourmet dishes. Evidence of the food properties of these species is still scarce. Aiming to obtain more in-depth knowledge of dahlia plants, this study aimed to evaluate the nutritional, bioactive, and antinutritional properties of the edible parts of purple dahlia (tuberous root and flower) to elucidate their value and safety as foods. The percent composition, caloric value, pH, Total Soluble Solids (TSS), Total Titratable Acidity (TTA), ratio of TSS to TTA, anthocyanins, carotenoids, vitamin C, total phenolics, tannins, nitrates, and minerals of the roots and flowers were analyzed. The inulin content in the root and the color of the flower were also evaluated. The results were reported as mean and standard deviation, and exploratory factor analysis was performed. Both parts of the dahlia had constituents that contribute to a good diet at concentrations like those in conventional vegetables, whereas the antinutritional components were also compatible with those of commonly consumed foods, with acceptable dietary values. Thus, it is evident that purple dahlia flowers and roots have potential for use in human food and can be considered good options to improve and diversify a healthy diet.

Resumo A utilização de plantas alimentícias não convencionais na alimentação humana tem crescido nos últimos anos, impulsionada principalmente pelos pratos gourmet. Entretanto, estudos comprovando as propriedades alimentícias destas espécies ainda são incipientes. Sendo assim, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar as propriedades nutricionais, bioativas e antinutricionais das partes comestíveis da dália roxa (raiz tuberosa e flor), para elucidar seu potencial e a segurança no seu consumo. Foram, dessa forma, analisados: composição centesimal, valor calórico, pH, sólidos solúveis totais, acidez total titulável, ratio, antocianinas, carotenoides, vitamina C, fenólicos totais, taninos, nitratos e minerais para a raiz e a flor, além da avaliação do teor de inulina na raiz. Os resultados foram analisados pelas médias e desvio padrão, e foi realizada a análise fatorial exploratória. Ambas as partes avaliadas possuem constituintes requeridos para uma boa alimentação em concentrações semelhantes às das hortaliças convencionais, enquanto os componentes antinutricionais também são compatíveis aos de alimentos comumente consumidos, com valores aceitáveis na alimentação. Desse modo, é evidenciado que flor e raiz de dália roxa apresentam potencial para uso na alimentação humana, podendo ser consideradas como boas opções para incrementar e diversificar uma dieta saudável.

ABSTRACT The reuse of contaminated water arising from industries is a major challenge in the environmental field, which enables the search for treatments with a view to sustainable development. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the calcination material from an ant colony (termite) in the production of adsorbent materials for methylene blue dye removal. The natural material (NC) and calcined materials at temperatures of 290ºC (C-290), 380ºC (C-380), 450ºC (C-450) and 540ºC (C-540) were characterized using techniques of thermal analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In NC and C-290 samples, the volatile compounds were evaluated by HS-GC/MS and phenolic compounds were identified by HPLC. The results for the adsorption of the dye methylene blue showed that, while the adsorption process can not be quantified employing the natural material, the process efficiency was quite relevant when the sample was calcined at a temperature of 290°C, whose removal percentage was 96%. Although the calcined sample at this temperature is the most similar to the starting material, performed at a temperature of 290°C acted in reducing the complexity of phenolic and volatile compounds found in the NC sample, which may negatively impact in the adsorption process.

RESUMO O reaproveitamento da água contaminada decorrente das indústrias é um grande desafio na área ambiental, o que possibilita a busca de tratamentos com vistas ao desenvolvimento sustentável. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito do material de calcinação de uma colônia de formigas (cupim) na produção de materiais adsorventes para remoção do corante azul de metileno. O material natural (NC) e os materiais calcinados a temperaturas de 290ºC (C-290), 380ºC (C-380), 450ºC (C-450) e 540ºC (C-540) foram caracterizados por meio de técnicas de análise térmica e Espectroscopia de Infravermelho com Transformada de Fourier (FTIR). Nas amostras NC e C-290, os compostos voláteis foram avaliados pelo HS-GC/MS e os compostos fenólicos foram identificados pelo HPLC. Os resultados para a adsorção do corante azul de metileno mostraram que, embora o processo de adsorção não possa ser quantificado utilizando o material natural, a eficiência do processo foi bastante relevante quando a amostra foi calcinada a uma temperatura de 290°C, cujo percentual de remoção foi de 96%. Embora a amostra calcinada a esta temperatura seja a mais semelhante ao material inicial, a calcinação na temperatura de 290°C atuou na redução da complexidade dos compostos fenólicos e voláteis encontrados na amostra de NC, os quais podem prejudicar no processo de adsorção.

ABSTRACT Bugs are pest insects that, when not adequately controlled, may cause significant losses in the soybean crop. Their damage to grains compromises delivery in the storage unit and storage success. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate, during storage, the effect of temperature and moisture content on soybean grain quality with high damage caused by bugs in the crop. The experiment was set in a completely randomized design with a 2 x 4 x 5 factorial design, with two moisture contents (11.75 and 13.84% (w.b.)), four storage temperatures (20, 25, 30 and 35 °C), and five evaluation periods (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 months). The percentage of damaged/fermented, damaged, fermented, broken grains, and electrical conductivity were analyzed. It can be inferred that bug-damaged soybean grains have reduced quality when stored at higher temperatures and for more extended periods. It is not recommended to store bug-damaged grains in moisture contents of 13.84% (w.b.) at temperatures above 30 °C for longer than four months. Grains stored at 35 °C when not damaged by bugs, ferment after six months of storage. Bug-damaged grains evolve to fermented grains during storage.

Caffeine and guarana are safe foods according to the American (FDA) and Brazilian (ANVISA) health agencies. However, data regarding the composition, quality, and safety of guarana-based food supplements sold in Brazil are limited. Most of the methods used for quantification of caffeine and other guarana chemical markers are based on complex extraction techniques as well as on gradient elution and do not evaluate the matrix effect nor the uncertainty estimation measurement. A simple and selective method for caffeine detection has been developed and validated using HPLC-UV. It shows linearity between 1 and 10 µg mL-1, has a significant matrix effect (p < 0.05) and its expanded uncertainty varies from 6.9 to 16.7%. Other parameters (selectivity, recovery, precision, robustness, limits of detection, and quantification) were satisfactory. The present study has analyzed 30 commercial samples of guarana-based food supplements (powders and capsules). Powder samples have shown an average caffeine level of 25.27 ± 5.20 mg g-1 while capsules 28.53 ± 13.81 mg g-1. No significant difference between the two types of samples has been observed (p > 0.005).

Resumo Teve-se como objetivo, no presente trabalho, realizar a classificação morfológica macroscópica e microestrutural das fraturas em ossos longos de Cerdocyon thous. Foram utilizados 18 cadáveres da espécie, necropsiados e submetidos à avaliação radiográfica e microscópica quando detectadas fraturas em ossos longos. Dentre os 18 animais, oito (44%) possuíam fraturas igualmente distribuídas (33,33%) em fêmur, úmero ou tíbia. Mais frequentemente (61,54%) as fraturas eram simples e acometiam a diáfise, e em menores proporções (23,08%) atingiam a linha fisária. Nas fraturas em diáfise e metáfise, predominava o tecido ósseo cortical, com ósteons longitudinais que continham fibras colágenas longitudinais e intermediárias, e lamelas com aspecto de delaminação. Por outro lado, nas fraturas fisárias, o tecido ósseo trabecular foi mais frequentemente observado, constituído por trabéculas com fibras colágenas desorganizadas e ausência de ósteons. Em ambos os casos, notou-se baixa atividade de osteócitos e baixa cobertura de osteoblastos na superfície óssea. Conclui-se que, nas condições observadas, a frequência de fraturas em ossos longos de C. thous foi de 44%, sendo as fêmeas mais predispostas, além de os achados embasarem a hipótese da ocorrência de tais lesões estarem relacionadas a atropelamentos. O presente estudo contribui significativamente para alertar clínicos e cirurgiões em relação aos tipos de fraturas as quais C. thous está mais predisposto, seus locais de maior ocorrência e sua microestrutura. Dessa forma, surge a necessidade de implementação de ações conjuntas que visem reduzir o número de casos de atropelamento de animais silvestres.

Abstract The aim of the present study was to perform the macroscopic and microstructural morphological classification of long bone fractures of Cerdocyon thous. Eighteen cadavers of the species were necropsied, and subjected to radiographic and microscopical evaluation when long bone fractures were detected. Among the 18 cadavers, eight (44%) had fractures equally distributed (33.33%) in the femur, humerus, or tibia. More frequently (61.54%), the fractures were simple and affected the diaphysis, and in smaller proportions (23.08%) reached the physeal line. In diaphyseal and metaphyseal fractures, microscopical evaluation revealed cortical bone tissue, with longitudinal osteons that contained longitudinal and intermediate collagen fibres and lamellae with a delamination aspect. On the other hand, in epiphyseal fractures, trabecular bone tissue was more frequently observed, consisting of trabeculae with disorganised collagen fibres and absence of osteons. In both cases low activity, osteocytes, and low coverage of osteoblasts on the bone surface were noted. It was concluded that the frequency of fractures in the long bones of C. thous was 44%, with females being more predisposed. The findings support the hypothesis that fractures in such animals are caused by being run over by automobiles. The present study contributes significantly in alerting clinicians and surgeons to the types of fractures that C. thous is more predisposed to, its places of greatest occurrence, and its microstructure. Thus, there is a need for joint actions aimed at reducing the number of cases of wild animals being run over by automobiles.
