Abstract Introduction Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) and their suppression may be considered useful in monitoring cochlear function and the efferent auditory pathway inhibitory effect. Nonetheless, the establishment of reliable parameters of response variations is of great importance. Objectives To verify the replicability of test and retest in the research of the inhibitory effect of the efferent pathway using contralateral suppressing stimulus during DPOAE recording for clinical applicability. Methods Cross-sectional study with 48 volunteers, aged 18 to 30 years, with normal audiometric thresholds. The procedures included were audiometric and immittance measures to overrule any conductive or sensorineural conditions and DPOAE recordings without and with contralateral suppression with a 60 dBHL white noise. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions amplitudes were analyzed and compared in both conditions with Wilcoxon test, and the Spearman correlation test was used to assess test-retest reliability. Results The comparative analysis showed differences between amplitudes in test and retest conditions only in 1,500 Hz for DPOAE measures with all other tested frequencies showing no differences, and no difference was observed in all recorded frequencies in the test and retest comparison for DPOAE suppression. The degree of correlation between test and retest of DPOAE amplitude was good at 6,000 Hz and strong (r > 0.880) at the other frequencies. For DPOAE with suppression, all frequencies presented strong correlation between test and retest: 1,500 Hz (r = 0.880), 2,000 Hz (r = 0.882), 3,000 Hz (r = 0.940), and 6,000 Hz (r = 0.957). Conclusions The study found good replicability in contralateral suppression of DPOAE with potential clinical applicability, and we recommend conducting the test from 2000Hz to higher frequencies for more reliable results.

RESUMO Objetivo validar um questionário autorreferido para avaliação do processamento auditivo central para adultos. Métodos o instrumento foi testado e validado com 123 estudantes universitários de 18 a 59 anos, sem alteração auditiva e sem histórico de tratamento para transtorno do processamento auditivo central. Os participantes realizaram os testes Gaps in Noise e Fala com Ruído. Por meio da análise estatística, foi definido o ponto de corte para alterações, a sensibilidade e a especificidade. Resultados o instrumento foi elaborado contendo 21 questões relacionadas ao histórico de saúde, aos hábitos de vida, às queixas auditivas e de aprendizagem. Após a análise fatorial, as questões relacionadas ao hábito de vida e condições de saúde foram retiradas por apresentarem carga fatorial baixa. Assim, a versão final da escala foi composta por 13 questões. Os constructos de primeira ordem e o indicador diagnóstico apresentaram níveis de confiabilidade exigidos. Foram definidos os pontos de corte 6 e 5 que indicassem alteração nos testes Gaps in Noise e Fala com Ruído branco, respectivamente. Conclusão a escala apresentou resultados válidos, confiáveis e consistentes e foi capaz de realizar inferências sobre o processamento auditivo.

ABSTRACT Purpose To validate a self-report questionnaire to assess the central auditory processing in adults. Methods The instrument was tested and validated with 123 university students aged 18 to 59 years, without hearing changes or history of treatment for central auditory processing disorder. The participants were submitted to the Gaps-in-Noise and speech-in-white-noise tests. The cutoff scores for changes, sensitivity, and specificity were defined with statistical analysis. Results The instrument was developed with 21 questions related to health history, life habits, and hearing and learning complaints. After factor analysis, the questions related to life habits and health conditions were removed because they had a low factor loading. Thus, the final version of the scale comprised 13 questions. The first-order constructs and the diagnostic indicator achieved the required levels of reliability. The cutoff scores to indicate abnormal results in the Gaps-in- Noise and speech-in-white-noise tests were defined respectively as 6 and 5. Conclusion The scale obtained valid, reliable, and consistent results and enabled professionals to make inferences about auditory processing.

RESUMO Objetivo avaliar o efeito da variação da intensidade de estimulação sobre as respostas das emissões otoacústicas produto de distorção em indivíduos com perda auditiva neurossensorial, utilizando um protocolo de gradiente de fase das emissões. Métodos estudo observacional transversal. Participaram 38 indivíduos com diagnóstico de perda auditiva neurossensorial de grau leve, moderado ou severo. Foram realizadas anamnese, meatoscopia, audiometria tonal liminar, logoaudiometria, imitanciometria, emissões otoacústicas produto de distorção e emissões otoacústicas residuais. As emissões otoacústicas residuais foram coletadas com o equipamento Echodia, modelo Elios®. O protocolo utilizado permite a variação dos parâmetros frequência e intensidade e as respostas são analisadas por meio do teste do Gradiente de Fase. As respostas registradas nas emissões residuais foram consideradas como “presente”, “ausente” e “artefato”, considerando a variação da fase em função de f1. Resultados Foram incluídas 72 orelhas. Houve diferença estatisticamente significativa nas frequências de 1300 Hz e 2000 Hz, ao comparar os resultados das emissões residuais. Ao correlacionar o resultado da audiometria e a intensidade de estimulação que evocou a emissão residual, houve correlação positiva para as frequências de 1000 Hz e 4000Hz. O “artefato” foi registrado, principalmente, nas frequências mais agudas: 56,2% em 3000 Hz e 58,2% em 4000 Hz. A emissão otoacústica residual presente foi registrada em 18,6% em 1000 Hz, 13,4% em 2000 Hz, 6,3% em 3000 Hz e 7,5% em 4000 Hz. Conclusão o aumento da intensidade de estimulação no exame de emissões pode auxiliar no estudo das células ciliadas residuais, desde que seja utilizado um protocolo capaz de diferenciar respostas fisiológicas de artefatos.

ABSTRACT Purpose To study the effect of stimulation intensity variation on the responses of distortion products in subjects with sensorineural hearing loss using a new protocol to register the otoacoustic emissions. Methods This is a cross-sectional observational study. The following procedures were performed: anamnesis, otoscopy, pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, tympanometry, distortion product and residual otoacoustic emissions. The residual DPOAE were collected with the Echodia equipment, Elios®. The protocol that was developed allows the variation of frequency and intensity parameters and the responses are analyzed by phase gradient test. Responses recorded in residual otoacoustic emissions were considered “present”, “absent” or “artifact”. Results The total included ears was 72. On residual otoacoustic emissions test, at a frequency of 1300Hz and 2000Hz, there was statistically significant difference. By analyzing the average found in the audiometry and the results of residual emissions, only the frequency of 1300Hz showed a statistically significant association in all groups. By correlating the results of the audiometry and the stimulation intensity used to evoke the residual emission, there was positive correlation for the frequencies of 1000Hz and 4000Hz. The “artifact” was mostly recorded in the higher frequencies: 56.2% in 3000Hz and 58.2% in 4000 Hz. Residual EOAPD present was recorded as 18.6% at 1000Hz, 13.4% at 2000Hz, 6.3% at 3000Hz and 7.5% at 4000Hz. Conclusion The increased stimulation intensity in the otoacoustic emissions test can aid in the study of residual outer hair cells, as long as a protocol is used to check the correctness of the responses.

RESUMO Objetivo: revisar a literatura disponível sobre os achados eletrofisiológicos do PEATE por estímulo chirp em recém-nascidos. Métodos: a busca dos artigos foi realizada nas bases de dados PubMed, Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS e Scielo. Foram selecionados artigos publicados em Inglês e Português, entre 2010 e 2020. Foram incluídos artigos que contemplavam o uso do PEATE por estímulo chirp banda larga por via aérea em recém-nascidos; que avaliavam o PEATE por frequência específica e que comparavam os resultados do PEATE por estímulo chirp e clique. Aqueles que avaliavam somente resultados por via óssea, artigos repetidos nas bases de dados, artigos de revisão de literatura, relato de casos, cartas e editoriais foram excluídos. Revisão da Literatura: a estratégia de busca resultou na seleção de nove artigos. Quatro estudos (44,4%) analisaram amplitude e latência das ondas do PEATE por estímulo chirp, três (33,3%) compararam o tempo de realização do PEATE por clique e chirp, dois estudos (22,2%) analisaram somente o parâmetro amplitude e dois (22,2%) verificaram a especificidade do PEATE por chirp na triagem auditiva neonatal. Conclusão: o estímulo chirp possibilita respostas com maiores amplitudes, maiores latências e menor tempo de realização do exame quando comparado ao estímulo clique em recém-nascidos.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to review the literature available on electrophysiological findings on ABR with chirp stimuli in newborns. Methods: articles were searched in PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and SciELO. Papers published in English and Portuguese between 2010 and 2020 were selected, including those that addressed ABR with air-conduction broadband chirp stimuli in newborns, that assessed ABR with a specific frequency, and that compared ABR results with chirp and click stimuli. Articles that assessed only bone-conduction results, duplicates, literature reviews, case reports, letters, and editorials were excluded. Literature review: the search strategy resulted in nine selected articles. Four studies (44.4%) analyzed ABR wave amplitude and latency with chirp stimuli, three studies (33.3%) compared the time of ABR procedures between chirp and click stimuli, two studies (22.2%) analyzed only amplitude, and two (22.2%), verified the specificity of ABR with chirp stimuli in neonatal hearing screening. Conclusion: chirp stimuli elicit responses with greater amplitudes, lower latencies, and shorter examination time than those with click stimuli in newborns.

Abstract Introduction Research with tinnitus patients presenting with hearing loss and normal hearing subjects have verified that tinnitus interferes with auditory processing. One treatment option for this symptom consists of tinnitus habituation therapy. Objective To determine the influence of tinnitus habituation therapy on auditory abilities, on the self-perception of tinnitus regarding loudness and discomfort, and its impact on the quality of life. Methods A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 19 individuals with tinnitus. Audiological tinnitus and auditory processing evaluations were performed. Subsequently, the volunteers underwent tinnitus habituation therapy for 6 months. Ultimately, all of the individuals were reevaluated. Results A statistically significant reduction in tinnitus self-perception was observed in relation to loudness, discomfort, and its impact on the quality of life (p = 0.001, 0.001, 0.023, respectively). However, the influence of tinnitus habituation therapy on auditory abilities was not verified. Conclusion Tinnitus habituation therapy was effective in reducing the self-perception of tinnitus loudness and discomfort, as well as the impact of the symptom on the quality of life. However, these factors did not improve the auditory processing skills in tinnitus patients.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar a percepção da incapacidade auditiva, a audição e a cognição em idosos encaminhados para avaliação audiológica e verificar a existência de correlação entre a audição e as habilidades cognitivas. Método Estudo observacional e descritivo, realizado com 135 idosos. Os participantes realizaram a avaliação auditiva (Audiometria Tonal Limiar, Logoaudiometria, Imitanciometria) responderam a um inventário que avalia a percepção da incapacidade auditiva (questionário HHIE - Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly) e foram submetidos a um rastreio cognitivo (teste Mini Exame do Estado Mental - MEEM). Resultados Houve elevada prevalência de queixa auditiva e perda da audição nos idosos encaminhados para avaliação auditiva, mas não houve relação do grau da perda auditiva e da percepção da incapacidade auditiva em relação ao desempenho cognitivo. Conclusão Neste estudo, o grau da perda auditiva não influenciou o desempenho cognitivo dos idosos, e a percepção da incapacidade auditiva não diferiu entre indivíduos com cognição normal ou alterada.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze auditory perception, hearing and cognition in the elderly referred for audiological evaluation and search for correlations between hearing and cognitive abilities. Method An observational and descriptive study, carried out with 135 elderly people. The participants did the auditory (tonal audiometry, speech audiometry, immittance measures, HHIE Questionnaire - Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly) and the cognitive (MMSE - Mini Mental State Examination) assessments. Results There is a high prevalence of hearing complaints (91.85%) and hearing loss (91.85%) in the elderly referred for audiological assessment, but there was no relation between the degree of hearing loss (p = 0.537) and the auditory perception (p = 0.930) in relation to cognitive performance. Conclusion In this study, the degree of hearing loss did not influence the cognitive performance of the elderly, and the auditory handicap perception did not differ between individuals with normal or altered cognition.

Resumo Introdução: A toxoplasmose congênita é uma doença infecciosa com grande prevalência nos países tropicais. Caracteriza-se por sequelas neurológicas, oftalmológicas e auditivas. Objetivo: O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar e descrever o potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico em bebês de 1 a 3 meses diagnosticados com toxoplasmose congênita e comparar com bebês de mesma faixa etária sem a infecção. Metódo: Trata-se de um estudo observacional, analítico e transversal, no qual foi realizada a pesquisa do potencial evocado auditivo de tronco cerebral em lactentes com toxoplasmose congênita. Foram realizados os exames audiológicos: emissões otoacústicas evocadas por estímulo transiente, potencial auditivo de tronco encefálico clínico e automático. Resultados: Participaram do estudo 100 crianças, porém a amostra final foi constituída por 76. Das 37 crianças com toxoplasmose incluídas no estudo, 28 completaram a avaliação neurológica de imagem e, dessas, três (10,7%) apresentaram exame neurológico alterado. Na avaliação do potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico, duas crianças sem toxoplasmose e 10 com toxoplasmose congênita apresentaram resultado sugestivo de alteração no processo maturacional da via auditiva de tronco encefálico. Conclusão: Foram identificadas 10 (27%) crianças com possível alteração unilateral na avaliação eletrofisiológica e um risco cinco vezes maior de uma criança entre um e três meses com toxoplasmose apresentar alteração no potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico quando comparada com uma criança da mesma faixa de idade sem a infecção.

Abstract Introduction: Congenital toxoplasmosis is an infectious disease with high prevalence in tropical countries. It is characterized by neurological, ophthalmological and auditory sequelae. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate and describe the brainstem auditory evoked potential in infants aged 1-3 months diagnosed with congenital toxoplasmosis and to compare them with infants of the same age group without the infection. Methods: This is an observational, analytical and cross-sectional study in which brainstem auditory evoked potential was investigated in infants with congenital toxoplasmosis. The following audiological exams were performed: transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions, clinical and automatic brainstem auditory evoked potential. Results: 100 children participated in the study, but the final sample consisted of 76 children. Of the 37 children with toxoplasmosis included in the study, 28 completed the neurological imaging evaluation, and of these, 3 (10.7%) showed an altered neurological examination. At the brainstem auditory evoked potential assessment, two children without toxoplasmosis and 10 children with congenital toxoplasmosis had results suggestive of alterations in the brainstem auditory pathway maturation. Conclusion: 10 (27%) children were identified with a possible unilateral alteration in the electrophysiological assessment. There was a 5-fold higher risk for a child between 1 and 3 months of age with toxoplasmosis to have an altered brainstem auditory evoked potential compared to a child of the same age range without the infection.

RESUMO Objetivo: descrever os achados dos testes comportamentais do processamento auditivo em pacientes com perda auditiva antes e após a adaptação auditiva associada ao treinamento auditivo. Métodos: estudo descritivo analítico em que foram comparados os achados da avaliação do processamento auditivo em 22 pacientes, de 19 a 62 anos, com perda auditiva neurossensorial leve ou moderada. Testes utilizados: Localização Sonora; Masking Level Difference; Teste de Escuta Dicótica de Dissílabos Alternados; Teste de Padrão de Frequência Melódico, Teste de Padrão de Duração Melódico; Gaps In Noise; Fala com Ruído. Após os primeiros testes, os pacientes realizaram a adaptação auditiva e oito sessões de treinamento auditivo. Os testes foram refeitos após o período de dois meses. Resultados: houve predominância do gênero feminino e grau moderado de perda auditiva. Ao comparar as situações de avaliação inicial e final houve diferença estatisticamente significante (p<0,05) em todas as condições estudadas, com exceção dos testes Gaps In Noise e Masking Level Difference. Conclusão: os resultados comprovaram que o treinamento auditivo realizado em pacientes adultos usuários de aparelhos de amplificação sonora individual ocasionou melhora significante das habilidades do processamento auditivo, modificando o comportamento auditivo. A melhora dos resultados dos testes comportamentais do processamento auditivo nas situações inicial e final reflete melhora funcional auditiva.

ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the findings of the auditory processing behavioral tests in patients with hearing loss before and after hearing aid fitting associated with auditory training. Methods: a descriptive analytical study that compared the findings of the auditory processing evaluation in 22 patients, from 19 to 62 years old, with mild or moderate sensorineural hearing loss. Tests used: Sound localization; Masking Level Difference; Alternate Disyllables Dichotic Listening Test; Melodic Frequency Pattern Test, Melodic Duration Pattern Test; Gaps in Noise; Speech in Noise Test. After the first tests, the patients were fitted with hearing aids and underwent eight auditory training sessions. The tests were retaken after a two-month period. Results: there was a predominance of females and a moderate degree hearing loss. In the comparison of the initial and final assessment situations, a statistically significant difference (p <0.05) was seen in all conditions studied, except for the Gaps in Noise and Masking Level Difference tests. Conclusion: the results have proven that the auditory training performed in adult users of hearing aids brought about significant improvements on the auditory processing skills, thus, modifying their auditory behavior. The improvement of the results of the auditory processing behavioral tests in the initial and final situations reflects the hearing functional improvement achieved.

RESUMO Objetivos Revisar a literatura científica sobre as principais técnicas usadas para gerar o potencial evocado miogênico vestibular (VEMP) e suas aplicações clínicas. Estratégia de pesquisa Os artigos que descrevem os métodos de registro e as aplicações do VEMP foram localizados nas bases de dados PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, LILACS e SciELO. O levantamento realizado limitou-se aos artigos publicados nos idiomas Inglês, Português e Espanhol, entre janeiro de 2012 e maio de 2018. Critérios de seleção Artigos sobre os aspectos técnicos para a realização do VEMP ocular, cervical ou do músculo sóleo, com estimulação auditiva ou galvânica e artigos sobre as aplicações clínicas do VEMP foram incluídos; artigos repetidos nas bases de dados, artigos de revisão de literatura, relato de casos, cartas e editoriais foram excluídos. Resultados A estratégia de busca resultou na seleção de 28 artigos. Os estudos evidenciaram três métodos de registro do VEMP: cervical, ocular e no músculo sóleo. As aplicações clínicas do VEMP incluíram doença de Ménière, neurite vestibular, síndrome da deiscência do canal semicircular superior, doença de Parkinson, lesões centrais isquêmicas e mielopatias motoras. Conclusão Independentemente da técnica de registro, o VEMP mostrou-se útil como ferramenta complementar para o diagnóstico de doenças vestibulares periféricas e centrais.

ABSTRACT Purpose To review the scientific literature on the main techniques used to generate vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) and its clinical applications. Research strategy A search for articles describing VEMP recording methods and applications was conducted in the PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, LILACS and SciELO databases. The search was limited to articles published in English, Portuguese, and Spanish between January 2012 and May 2018. Selection criteria Articles addressing the technical aspects for performing ocular, cervical or soleus VEMP with auditory or galvanic stimulation and articles on the clinical applications of VEMP were included in this review, whereas articles repeated in the databases, literature reviews, case reports, letters, and editorials were excluded. Results The search strategy resulted in the selection of 28 articles. The studies evidenced three methods of VEMP recording: responses from the cervical, ocular and soleus muscle. Clinical applications of VEMP included Meniere’s disease, vestibular neuritis, superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome, Parkinson's disease, central ischemic lesions, and motor myelopathies. Conclusion Regardless of the recording technique, VEMP has proved to be useful as a complementary tool for the diagnosis of peripheral and central vestibular diseases.

RESUMO Déficits de processamento auditivo são comuns em pessoas com neurofibromatose tipo 1 (NF1), que também se queixam frequentemente de dificuldades no desempenho musical. Objetivos: Nós investigamos se a NF1 poderia estar associada à amusia, assim como a algum comprometimento da atividade do córtex auditivo primário. Métodos: Dezoito pessoas com NF1 e 22 controles sem a doença, pareados por idade, sexo e nível educacional, foram avaliados por meio da versão reduzida da Bateria de Avaliação de Amusia de Montreal (MBEA). A integridade das áreas corticais primárias do processamento auditivo foi avaliada através do potencial evocado auditivo mismacth negativity (MMN). Resultados: A amusia correlacionou-se com a NF1 (p = 0,001, odds ratio = 42,0, intervalo de confiança 4,5–39,6). Os pacientes com NF1 apresentaram maior prevalência de amusia do que os controles saudáveis (67% vs. 4,5%) e dificuldades na percepção musical, tanto melódica quanto temporal. O desempenho pior na MBEA foi correlacionado com maiores latências do MMN no grupo NF1. Conclusões: A amusia é uma característica comum na NF1 e pode resultar do comprometimento da atividade de áreas de processamento auditivo primário.

ABSTRACT Auditory processing deficits are common in people with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and they often report difficulties in musical performance. Objective: We investigated whether NF1 could be associated with amusia as well as with some impairment of primary auditory cortex activity. Methods: Eighteen people with NF1 and 22 healthy volunteers, matched for age, sex and educational level, were evaluated with the Montreal Battery Evaluation of Amusia – short version. The integrity of cortical primary auditory processing areas was evaluated by evoked potential mismatch negativity. Results: Amusia was correlated with NF1 (p = 0.001, odds ratio = 42.0, confidence interval 4.5–39.6). Patients with NF1 exhibited a greater prevalence of amusia than healthy controls (67% vs. 4.5%) and difficulties in both melodic and temporal music perception. Worse performance on the Montreal Battery Evaluation of Amusia was correlated with a greater mismatch negativity latency in NF1 group. Conclusions: Amusia is a common feature in NF1 and may result from impairment of activity in primary auditory processing areas.

Resumo Introdução: O potencial evocado miogênico vestibular é um potencial de média latência que avalia a resposta muscular decorrente de estimulação auditiva. Pode ser gerado a partir da contração do músculo esternocleidomastóideo e também a partir da contração de músculos extraoculares em resposta a sons de elevada intensidade. Este estudo apresenta uma técnica combinada ou simultânea de potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e ocular em indivíduos com alterações no sistema vestibular para que possa ser usada no diagnóstico otoneurológico. Objetivo: Caracterizar o registro e analisar os resultados do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e ocular combinado em indivíduos com hiporreflexia vestibular e em indivíduos com doença de Ménière. Método: Participaram do estudo 120 indivíduos, 30 com hiporreflexia vestibular, 30 com doença de Ménière e 60 com audição dentro dos padrões de normalidade. A coleta de dados foi feita por meio do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e ocular registrados simultaneamente. Resultados: Houve diferença entre o grupo de estudo (indivíduos com hiporreflexia vestibular e indivíduos com doença de Ménière) e o grupo controle para a maioria dos parâmetros das ondas no potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e ocular combinado. Para o potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical observou-se que o prolongamento da latência das ondas P13 e N23 foi a alteração mais encontrada no grupo de indivíduos com hiporreflexia vestibular e no grupo de indivíduos com doença de Ménière. Para o potencial evocado miogênico vestibular ocular o prolongamento da latência das ondas N10 e P15 foi a alteração mais encontrada no grupo de estudo. Conclusão: O potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e ocular combinado apresentou resultados relevantes para os indivíduos com hiporreflexia vestibular e para os indivíduos com doença de Ménière. Houve diferença entre o grupo de estudo e o grupo controle para a maioria dos parâmetros das ondas no potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e ocular combinado.

Abstract Introduction: The vestibular evoked myogenic potential is a potential of mean latency that measures the muscle response to auditory stimulation. This potential can be generated from the contraction of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and also from the contraction of extraocular muscles in response to high-intensity sounds. This study presents a combined or simultaneous technique of cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential in individuals with changes in the vestibular system, for use in otoneurologic diagnosis. Objective: To characterize the records and analyze the results of combined cervical and ocular VEMP in individuals with vestibular hyporeflexia and in those with Ménière's disease. Methods: The study included 120 subjects: 30 subjects with vestibular hyporeflexia, 30 with Ménière's disease, and 60 individuals with normal hearing. Data collection was performed by simultaneously recording the cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential. Results: There were differences between the study groups (individuals with vestibular hyporeflexia and individuals with Ménière's disease) and the control group for most of wave parameters in combined cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential. For cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential, it was observed that the prolongation of latency of the P13 and N23 waves was the most frequent finding in the group with vestibular hyporeflexia and in the group with Ménière's disease. For ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential, prolonged latency of N10 and P15 waves was the most frequent finding in the study groups. Conclusion: Combined cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential presented relevant results for individuals with vestibular hyporeflexia and for those with Ménière's disease. There were differences between the study groups and the control group for most of the wave parameters in combined cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential.

RESUMO Objetivo: revisar sistematicamente, por meio de busca nas plataformas Medline e Lilacs o uso da espectroscopia de luz próxima ao infravermelho (NIRS) como instrumento para a avaliação da audição a nível cortical em lactentes. Métodos: foi realizada uma revisão integrativa baseada nos critérios estabelecidos pela Cochrane Handbook, passando pelas etapas de definição da questão norteadora (o tema a ser pesquisado), definição das bases de dados para localização dos estudos, seleção e análise crítica dos artigos. A pesquisa bibliográfica foi realizada no período de setembro a dezembro de 2014. Os critérios de inclusão utilizados foram: artigos publicados nos idiomas inglês, português e espanhol, com a população infantil (bebês de 0 a 24 meses) e tipo de estudo (coorte, caso controle, transversal). Resultados: foram identificados 1674 artigos e 12 atenderam os critérios de inclusão deste estudo. Todos os artigos utilizaram o estímulo auditivo para medir alterações na hemodinâmica cerebral, porém com áreas cerebrais de interesse diferentes. E foram agrupados em três categorias quanto ao tipo de estímulo: apenas sons vocais, sons vocais e outros estímulos auditivos e sons não vocais. Conclusão: a NIRS é um instrumento eficaz para investigação da audição a nível cortical na população infantil.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to systematically review, through the search in the Medline and Lilacs database, the use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a tool to evaluate the auditory function at the cortical level in infants. Methods: integrative review based on the criteria established by the Cochrane Handbook including the definition of the guiding question (theme to be researched), definition of the database to locate the articles, and selection and critical analysis of the articles. The bibliographic search was performed from September to December 2014. The inclusion criteria were: articles published in English, Portuguese and Spanish related to the child population (infants aged from 0 to 24 months) and type of study (cohort, case-control, cross-sectional). Results: 1674 articles were identified and 12 met the inclusion criteria of this study. In all articles, the auditory stimulation was used to measure brain hemodynamic changes, but in different areas of interest of the brain. They were grouped into three categories according to the type of stimulus: only vocal sounds, vocal sounds and other auditory stimuli and non-vocal sounds. Conclusion: NIRS is an effective tool for the evaluation of the auditory function at the cortical level in the child population.

RESUMO Objetivo: Caracterizar o registro e analisar os resultados do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e ocular combinado em indivíduos sem queixas auditivas e vestibulares. Métodos: Participaram da pesquisa 30 indivíduos sem queixa auditiva e com audição dentro dos padrões de normalidade. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e ocular registrados simultaneamente. Resultados: Houve diferença entre as orelhas direita e esquerda para a amplitude das ondas P13 e N23 do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e para a latência da onda N10 do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular ocular. No gênero feminino não houve diferença entre as orelhas direita e esquerda para a amplitude das ondas P13, N23, N10, P15, interamplitude no potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e interamplitude no potencial evocado miogênico vestibular ocular e para a latência das ondas P13, N23, N10 e P15. No gênero masculino houve diferença entre as orelhas direita e esquerda para a amplitude da onda P13. Conclusão: Os resultados do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e ocular combinado foram consistentes, uma vez que as respostas geradas pelos potenciais evocados miogênicos vestibulares apresentaram morfologia, latência e amplitude adequadas, o que permite a avaliação da via vestibular ipsilateral descendente e da via vestibular contralateral ascendente.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To characterize the recording and analyze the results of the combined cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential in individuals without hearing and vestibular complaints. Methods: In this study, 30 individuals without hearing complaints and hearing within normal limits were evaluated. Data were collected through the simultaneous recording of cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential. Results: Differences were observed between the right and left ears for the amplitude of waves P13 and N23 of the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential and the latency of wave N10 of the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential. For female subjects, there was no difference between the right and left ears for the amplitude of waves P13, N23, N10, and P15; interamplitude in cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential and interamplitude in ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential; and latency in waves P13, N23, N10, and P15. For male subjects, there was a difference between the right and left ears for the amplitude of wave P13. Conclusion: The results of the combined cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials were consistent, because the responses generated by the vestibular evoked myogenic potentials presented an adequate morphology, latency, and amplitude, allowing for the evaluation of the ipsilateral descending vestibular pathways and the contralateral ascending vestibular pathways.

RESUMO Objetivo Identificar e sistematizar os principais estudos sobre o potencial evocado miogênico vestibular ocular e suas aplicações no diagnóstico das diversas doenças vestibulares. Estratégia de pesquisa Foram localizados artigos que descrevem a utilização do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular ocular na avaliação de doenças vestibulares nas bases PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, LILACS e SciELO. Critérios de seleção Foram incluídos estudos originais, com resumo disponível, publicados no período de janeiro de 2010 a março de 2016. Análise dos dados Foi realizada a descrição do delineamento do estudo e elencados os achados para a avaliação de potencial evocado miogênico vestibular ocular. Resultados Foram encontrados 265 estudos, dos quais 14 contemplaram os critérios de seleção propostos. Em relação à população/amostra de pacientes com alterações vestibulares incluída nos estudos, observou-se que as doenças mais investigadas foram a neurite vestibular, a vertigem posicional paroxística benigna, o Schwanoma vestibular e a doença de Ménière. Conclusão A maior parte das pesquisas realizadas nos últimos anos e publicadas nas bases de dados PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE e Scopus revelou que o potencial evocado miogênico vestibular ocular representa um método eficaz para avaliar a função utricular nas mais diversas doenças vestibulares.

ABSTRACT Purpose To identify and systematize the main studies on the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and their applications in the diagnosis of various vestibular diseases. Research strategy Articles that describe the use of ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials the evaluation of vestibular diseases were located in PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, LILACS e SciELO. Selection criteria Original studies, with available abstract, published in the period 2010 to March 2016 were included. Data analysis The study design was described, and the characteristics for the evaluation of ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials were listed. Results 265 studies were found, but just 14 contemplated the proposed selection criteria. In relation to the population / sample of patients with vestibular disorders included in the study, it was observed that the most researched diseases were the vestibular neuritis, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular Schwanoma and Meniere’s disease. Conclusion The most of the research realized in recent years and published in the databases PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE and Scopus revealed that the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials is an effective method to evaluate the utricular function in various vestibular disorders.

RESUMO Objetivo: Revisar sistematicamente a literatura científica sobre a realização do Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Média Latência (PEAML) em crianças e adolescentes brasileiros. Estratégia de pesquisa: Foram pesquisados artigos publicados a partir de 2009, em português, inglês ou espanhol, nas bases de dados eletrônicas MEDLINE, SciELO, BIREME e LILACS. Os artigos selecionados envolveram a realização do PEAML em crianças e/ou adolescentes brasileiros. Após triagem, os artigos foram analisados segundo a iniciativa “Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology” (STROBE). Critérios de seleção: Foram excluídos artigos repetidos nas bases de busca e também os relatos de caso. Resultados: A busca inicial identificou 1315 artigos, dos quais oito foram selecionados para compor a revisão. Verificou-se predomínio de estudos observacionais transversais (75%); estimulação tipo click (100%), com velocidade até 11/s (100%) e intensidade de 70 dBNA (88%); uso de filtro passa-alta de 10 Hz (50%) e passa-baixa de 200 Hz (75%); montagem dos eletrodos em C3/C4 (ativos) A1/A2 (referências), e Fpz (neutro) (88%); amplitude Na-Pa, como principal parâmetro de comparação e normalidade; e uso do teste ANOVA (63%) para análise estatística. Nos estudos revisados, a média da latência da onda Pa e da amplitude Na-Pa em crianças e adolescentes normo-ouvintes foi de 32 milissegundos e 1,57 microvolts, respectivamente. Conclusão: Não há consenso quanto aos parâmetros de registro do PEAML em crianças e adolescentes brasileiros. Ainda assim, a média de latência de Pa e amplitude Na-Pa encontrada em crianças e adolescentes brasileiros normo-ouvintes, avaliados nos oito artigos desta revisão, concorda com os parâmetros de normalidade já estabelecidos internacionalmente.

ABSTRACT Purpose: Systematically review the scientific literature on Middle Latency Response (MLR) in Brazilian children and adolescents. Research strategy: We searched articles published since 2009 in Portuguese, English or Spanish at MEDLINE, SciELO, BIREME and LILACS electronic basis. Selected articles involved the use of MLR in children and / or Brazilian adolescents. After screening process, articles were analyzed according to “Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology” (STROBE) initiative. Selection criteria: Repeated articles (due to database repetition) and case reports were excluded. Results: From 1315 identified articles, eight were selected for the review. It was predominantly observed: cross-sectional studies (75%); click stimulation (100%), with rate up to 11/s (100%) and 70 dBHL intensity (88%); filtering high-pass 10 Hz (50%) and low-pass 200 Hz (75%); electrode array with actives placed at C3/C4, references at A1/A2 and neutral at Fpz (88%); Na-Pa amplitude as main measure of comparison and normality; and the use of ANOVA test (63%) for statistical analyses. The average latency of Pa wave and Na-Pa amplitude in normal-hearing children and adolescents of the studies was 32 milliseconds and 1.57 microvolts respectively. Conclusion: There is no consensus on MLR collection parameters in Brazilian children and adolescents. Still, the Pa latency average and Na-Pa amplitude found in Brazilian normal-hearing children and adolescents evaluated on the eight articles of this review agreed with normative parameters established internationally.
