Abstract The objective of this work was to determine the genetic correlations and the direct and indirect associations of agronomic traits and grain quality attributes with the percentage of whole grains in flood irrigated rice. The experiment was carried out in two environments, in a randomized complete block design with three replicates, using 23 irrigated rice genotypes. The evaluated traits were: percentage of whole grains, caryopsis length, caryopsis width, panicle length, panicle weight, 1,000 grain weight, days to flowering, percentage of chalky grains with white belly, total chalky area, total whiteness, vitreous whiteness, and defects in coloring. The percentage of grains with white belly and total chalky area were positively correlated, whereas the percentage of grains with white belly and vitreous whiteness were negatively correlated. The traits caryopsis width, percentage of chalky grains with white belly, panicle weight, and 1,000 grain weight showed indirect effects on whole-grain yield response according to total chalky area and total whiteness. Total chalky area and total whiteness are the factors that most negatively influence the percentage of whole grains according to the genotypic correlations and direct effects.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar as correlações genéticas e as associações diretas e indiretas de caracteres agronômicos e atributos de qualidade de grãos com a percentagem de grãos inteiros em arroz irrigado por inundação. O experimento foi conduzido em dois ambientes, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, tendo-se utilizado 23 genótipos de arroz irrigado. Os caracteres avaliados foram: percentagem de grãos inteiros, comprimento da cariopse, largura da cariopse, comprimento da panícula, peso da panícula, peso de mil grãos, dias para floração, percentagem de grãos com “barriga branca” e grãos gessados, área gessada total, brancura total, brancura vítrea e defeitos de coloração. A percentagem de grãos com “barriga branca” e área gessada total correlacionaram-se positivamente, enquanto a percentagem de grãos com “barriga branca” e gessada e brancura vítrea correlacionaram-se negativamente. Os caracteres largura da cariopse, percentual de grãos com “barriga branca” e gessada, peso da panícula e peso de mil grãos apresentaram efeitos indiretos sobre a resposta de rendimento de grãos inteiros de acordo com área total gessada e brancura total. Área total gessada e brancura total são os fatores que mais influenciam negativamente a percentagem de grãos inteiros de acordo com as correlações genotípicas e os efeitos diretos.

Abstract Takayasu’s arteritis is a type of primary systemic vasculitis that affects medium and large arteries, including the aorta and its main branches, as well as the pulmonary and coronary arteries. Although rare in children, it is the third most common vasculitis in the pediatric population, often with delayed diagnosis due to the nonspecific presentation of clinical symptoms in its initial phase. This is a case of a 16-year-old girl with a giant ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, who needed surgery on an emergency basis. The etiological aspects involved in aneurysms in young patients are also addressed.

Resumo: Rubem Fonseca é reconhecido, desde o lançamento de sua primeira publicação, pela representação da violência associada ao uso de uma linguagem sofisticada. Tal característica leva Alfredo Bosi a inseri-lo na corrente literária “brutalista”. Este artigo pretende verificar como é representada a brutalidade derivada dos desníveis sociais na sociedade brasileira em A grande arte, de 1983, segundo romance policial do autor. O escritor utiliza-se de aprimoradas técnicas narrativas para representar de maneira detalhada situações de violência explícita que envolvem o protagonista-narrador e outras personagens como o matador de aluguel. Com apoio em estudos sobre o romance policial, a narrativa brasileira e alguns problemas de técnica da narrativa, expomos a imbricação entre representação da violência, a crítica à desigualdade social e a composição própria do romance policial, construídas por um discurso requintado.

Abstract: Since the release of his first publication, Rubem Foseca has been associated to a representation of violence through sophisticated language. Such characteristic led Alfredo Bosi to include Fonseca in the “brutalist” literary movement. This article intends to examine how brutality resulting from social differences in Brazilian society is represented in A grande arte (1983), the second crime novel written by Fonseca. In this novel, the author uses refined narrative techniques to represent in detail situations of explicit violence that involve the protagonist-narrator and other characters and whose main agent for violence is a contract killer. Based on studies about crime novels, Brazilian narrative and narrative techniques, we will reveal the link between the representation of brutality, criticism of social inequality and composition of crime novels achieved through sophisticated writing.

Resumen: Rubem Fonseca es reconocido, desde el lanzamiento de su primera publicación, por la representación de la violencia asociada al uso de un lenguaje sofisticado. Tales características llevarían a Alfredo Bosi a insertarlo en la corriente literaria "brutalista". Este trabajo pretende verificar cómo es representada la brutalidad resultante de los desniveles sociales en la sociedad brasileña en A grande arte, de 1983, la segunda novela policial del autor. El escritor se vale de cuidadosos procedimientos narrativos para representar de manera detallada situaciones de violencia que envuelven al protagonista narrador y a otros personajes, como el sicario. Partiendo de los estudios sobre la novela policial, la narrativa brasileña y algunos problemas de técnica narrativa, apuntamos para la imbricación entre la representación de la violencia, la crítica a la desigualdad social y la composición propia del género policial, construidas a través de un requintado discurso.

OBJETIVO: Analisar comparativamente a morbimortalidade e sobrevida após esofagectomia trans-hiatal (TH) ou transtorácica (TT). METODOS: Estudo retrospectivo não randomizado de 68 pacientes com neoplasia de esôfago operados no INCA entre 1997 e 2005, divididos em dois grupos: 1 - TH (33 pacientes); e 2 - TT (35 pacientes). RESULTADOS: A idade média foi 40,7 anos (25 - 74 anos), sendo 73,5% homens. Tumores do 1/3 médio predominaram no Grupo 2 (48,6% versus 21,2%, p = 0,02). A média de linfonodos dissecados foi maior no Grupo 2 (21,6 versus 17,8 linfonodos, p = 0,04), porém sem diferença no número de linfonodos metastáticos (4,1 versus 3,9 linfonodos, p = 0,85). O tempo cirúrgico médio foi maior no Grupo 2 (410 versus 270 minutos, p = 0,001). O tempo médio de internação também foi maior no Grupo 2 (19 versus 14 dias, p = 0,001). A morbidade operatória foi 50%, sem diferença significativa (42,4% versus 57,1%, p = 0,23). Fístula esofágica ocorreu em 13,2%, sem diferença significativa (9,1% versus 17,1%, p = 0,23). A mortalidade foi 5,8% (04 pacientes), sem diferença significativa (1,4% versus 4,4%, p = 0,83). CONCLUSÃO: Neste estudo, a morbimortalidade não apresentou diferença em relação à via de acesso para a esofagectomia, apesar do maior tempo cirúrgico e de permanência hospitalar na via TT. A sobrevida global em 3 e 5 anos também foi maior na TT, possivelmente devido a maior freqüência de estágios iniciais em pacientes submetidos à transtorácica.

OBJECTIVE: Analyses of morbidity, mortality and overall survival after transhiatal (TH) or transthoracic (TT) esophagectomy. METHODS: Retrospective non randomized study of 68 patients with esophagus neoplasia operated in the Brazilian National Cancer Institute between 1997 and 2005. We divided in two groups: Group 1 - TH (33 patients); and Group 2 - TT (35 patients). RESULTS: The mean age was 40,7 years old (25 - 74 years old), being 73,5% male. Middle third tumors predominated in Group 2 (48,6% vs. 21,2%, p = 0,02). The mean of dissected lymph nodes was biggest in Group 2 (21,6 vs. 17,8 lymph nodes, p = 0,04), however without difference in number of metastatic lymph nodes (4,1 vs. 3,9 linfonodos, p = 0,85). The mean of operative time was higher in Group 2 (410 vs. 270 minutes, p = 0,001). Also the mean of length of stay was higher in Group 2 (19 vs. 14 days, p = 0,001). The operative morbidity was 50%, without statistical difference between the groups (42,4% vs. 57,1%, p = 0,23). Esophageal leakage occurred in 13,2% of cases, also without statistical difference (9,1% vs. 17,1%, p = 0,23). The mortality was 5,8% (04 patients), without statistical difference (1,4% vs. 4,4%, p = 0,83). CONCLUSION: In our study, the morbidity and mortality showed no statistical difference in relation to the access performed, although higher operative time and length of stay were observed in TT access. The 3 and 5-years overall survival also were biggest in TT access, probably due to the biggest frequency of patients on initial stages between the submitted to the TT access.
