Abstract The impact of the Antarctic Ozone Hole Influence over Southern Brazil in October 2015 was analyzed using daily mean data of the Total Column Ozone (TCO), Ultraviolet Index (UVI) and Radiative Cloud Fraction (RCF) from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument satellite instrument. Vertical profiles and fields of ozone content and Potential Vorticity available from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast reanalysis, air masses backward trajectories from the HYbrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model and channel 3 water vapor images from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite GOES-13 were also analyzed. The five identified events showed an -7.4±2.3% average TCO reduction, leading to an +16.6±54.6% UVI increase even with a predominance of partly cloudy days. Other impacts were observed in the ozone profiles, where the most significant anomalies occurred from 650 K reaching 1.2 ppmv at the 850 K level. In the ozone fields at 700 K, the presence of a polar origin tongue was observed causing negatives anomalies between -0.2 and 0.4 ppmv in a transient system format forced with eastward-traveling Rossby waves passing through the Southern of Brazil and Uruguay.

RESUMO Mycobacterium avium subesp. paratuberculosis (MAP) e o vírus da leucemia bovina (BLV) são agentes que causam grandes perdas econômicas nos rebanhos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a situação epidemiológica da paratuberculose bovina (PTB) e leucose enzoótica bovina (EBL) em rebanhos leiteiros de Lagoa Formosa, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Foram coletadas 236 amostras de sangue de vacas, as quais foram submetidas aos testes ELISA e imunodifusão em gel de ágar para detecção de anticorpos contra MAP e BLV. A soroprevalência de anticorpos contra MAP e BVL foi de 20% para os rebanhos e 6% para os animais e de 85% para os rebanhos e 50,42% para os animais, respectivamente. A presença dessas enfermidades deve servir como um alerta para os produtores e veterinários, para que concentrem maior atenção na implementação de medidas higiênico-sanitárias, incorporando elementos de vigilância com base nos riscos identificados no estudo.

Considering the recognized role of thyroid hormones on the cardiovascular system during health and disease, we hypothesized that type 2 deiodinase (D2) activity, the main activation pathway of thyroxine (T4)-to-triiodothyronine (T3), could be an important site to modulate thyroid hormone status, which would then constitute a possible target for β-adrenergic blocking agents in a myocardial infarction (MI) model induced by left coronary occlusion in rats. Despite a sustained and dramatic fall in serum T4 concentrations (60–70%), the serum T3 concentration fell only transiently in the first week post-infarction (53%) and returned to control levels at 8 and 12 weeks after surgery compared to the Sham group (P<0.05). Brown adipose tissue (BAT) D2 activity (fmol T4·min-1·mg ptn-1) was significantly increased by approximately 77% in the 8th week and approximately 100% in the 12th week in the MI group compared to that of the Sham group (P<0.05). Beta-blocker treatment (0.5 g/L propranolol given in the drinking water) maintained a low T3 state in MI animals, dampening both BAT D2 activity (44% reduction) and serum T3 (66% reduction in serum T3) compared to that of the non-treated MI group 12 weeks after surgery (P<0.05). Propranolol improved cardiac function (assessed by echocardiogram) in the MI group compared to the non-treated MI group by 40 and 57%, 1 and 12 weeks after treatment, respectively (P<0.05). Our data suggested that the beta-adrenergic pathway may contribute to BAT D2 hyperactivity and T3 normalization after MI in rats. Propranolol treatment maintained low T3 state and improved cardiac function additionally.

Cofilin-1 (CFL1), a small protein of 18 kDa, has been studied as a biomarker due to its involvement in tumor cell migration and invasion. Our aim was to evaluate CFL1 as an indicator of malignancy and aggressiveness in sputum samples. CFL1 was analyzed by ELISA immunoassay in the sputum of 73 lung cancer patients, 13 cancer-free patients, and 6 healthy volunteers. Statistical analyses included ANOVA, ROC curves, Spearman correlation, and logistic regression. Sputum CFL1 levels were increased in cancer patients compared to cancer-free patients and volunteers (P<0.05). High expression of sputum CFL1 was correlated to T4 stage (P=0.01) and N stage (P=0.03), tobacco history (P=0.01), and squamous cell carcinoma histologic type (P=0.04). The accuracy of sputum CFL1 in discriminating cancer patients from cancer-free patients and healthy volunteers were 0.78 and 0.69, respectively. CFL1 at a cut-off value of 415.25 pg/mL showed sensitivity/specificity of 0.80/0.70 in differentiating between healthy volunteers and cancer patients. Sputum CFL1 was also able to identify cancer-free patients from patients with lung cancer. The AUC was 0.70 and, at a cut-off point ≥662.63 pg/mL, we obtained 60% sensitivity and 54% specificity. Logistic regression analysis controlled for tobacco history, histologic types, and N stage showed that cancer cell-associated CFL1 was an independent predictor of death. Smoker patients with squamous cell carcinoma, lymph node metastasis and sputum CFL1>1.475 pg/mL showed augmented chance of death, suggesting lung cancer aggressiveness. CFL1 presented diagnostic value in detecting lung cancer and was associated to tumor aggressiveness.

RESUMO Doença de Marek (MD) é uma desordem linfoproliferativa causada pelo Gallid herpesvirus 2 (MDV), que infecta principalmente galináceos domésticos, porém aves silvestres podem ser ocasionalmente afetadas. O presente relato descreve os achados anatomopatológicos e moleculares de um caso de MD em um pavão-branco (Pavo cristatus). Os sinais clínicos incluíram apatia, hiporexia e diarreia. Macroscopicamente, foram observados nódulos macios, de 0,5 a 1,5cm de diâmetro, no músculo esquelético, no pulmão, nos rins, nos sacos aéreos, no intestino delgado, no coração, no ovário, no ventrículo e no proventrículo. Microscopicamente, numerosas células redondas neoplásicas atípicas foram notadas. A detecção molecular do DNA do MDV foi implementada para amplificar parte do gene meq, e os produtos foram sequenciados para análise filogenética. DNA foi obtido de tecidos de aves afetadas e do sangue de todos os galináceos do zoológico. A esperada amplificação de parte do gene meq de MDV amplificado foi ampliada e sequenciada. As sequências obtidas permitiram o agrupamento da cepa (acesso KT768121) com cepas do sorotipo 1 de MDV do GenBank.. O diagnóstico de MD em pavão-branco foi obtido com base nos achados anatomopatológicos e moleculares e, pelo conhecimento dos autores, não há relatos anteriores publicados de MD em Pavo cristatus.

ABSTRACT Marek's disease (MD) is a lymphoproliferative disorder caused by Gallid herpesvirus 2 (MDV) that infects mainly domestic gallinaceous birds although wild birds may occasionally be affected. The current report describes the anatomopathological and molecular findings of a case of MD in a white-peafowl (Pavo cristatus). The signs included apathy, hyporexia, and diarrhea. Grossly, 0.5 to 1.5cm in diameter, yellow, soft nodules were observed in the skeletal muscle, lung, kidney, air sacs, small intestine, heart, ovary, ventriculus, and proventriculus. Microscopically, numerous atypical round neoplastic cells were noted. The molecular detection of MDV DNA was implemented to amplify part of the meq gene and products were sequenced for the phylogenetic analysis. Template DNA was obtained from tissues of the affected bird and from blood of all the gallinaceous birds of the Zoo. The expected amplicon for the partial amplification of MDV meq gene was obtained and the amplicons were sequenced. Sequences obtained enabled grouping the strain (accession no. KT768121) with MDV serotype 1 strains from the GenBank. Based on the anatomopathological and molecular findings, the diagnosis of MD in a white-peafowl was reached, and to the authors' knowledge, no previous report regarding MD was published in Pavo cristatus.

Hyaluronan (HA) shows promise for detecting cancerous change in pleural effusion and urine. However, there is uncertainty about the localization of HA in tumor tissue and its relationship with different histological types and other components of the extracellular matrix, such as angiogenesis. We evaluated the association between HA and degree of malignancy through expression in lung tumor tissue and sputum. Tumoral tissue had significantly increased HA compared to normal tissue. Strong HA staining intensity associated with cancer cells was significant in squamous cell carcinoma compared to adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma. A significant direct association was found between tumors with a high percentage of HA and MVD (microvessel density) in tumoral stroma. Similarly significant was the direct association between N1 tumors and high levels of HA in cancer cells. Cox multivariate analysis showed significant association between better survival and low HA. HA increased in sputum from lung cancer patients compared to cancer-free and healthy volunteers and a significant correlation was found between HA in sputum and HA in cancer tissue. Localization of HA in tumor tissue was related to malignancy and reflected in sputum, making this an emerging factor for an important diagnostic procedure in patients suspected to have lung cancer. Further study in additional patients in a randomized prospective trial is required to finalize these results and to validate our quantitative assessment of HA, as well as to couple it to gold standard sputum cytology.

RESUMO Varronia curassavica Jacq. (Boraginaceae) está presente na vegetação de restinga e apresenta relevantes propriedades medicinais. A espécie é explorada especialmente por comunidades locais e pela indústria farmacêutica, porém, carece de informações ecológicas e genéticas a seu respeito. Nesse contexto, o estudo foi conduzido com o objetivo de caracterizar a diversidade genética de três populações de V. curassavica em áreas de restinga na Ilha de Santa Catarina. Foram coletadas folhas de 50 indivíduos adultos em cada uma das três áreas de estudo e as frequências alélicas das populações foram obtidas a partir de 14 locos alozímicos. Foram encontrados 25 alelos distintos nas três populações, sendo dois alelos exclusivos. As populações apresentaram diversidade genética média de 0,111 e índice de fixação médio de -0,060 (-0,273 até 0,222). Os níveis de diversidade são intermediários, semelhantes aos exibidos por espécies da mesma família ou de características ecológicas semelhantes. Os índices de fixação foram todos significativos e discrepantes entre as populações, sendo que duas delas apresentaram excesso de heterozigotos. A divergência genética interpopulacional foi significativa e igual a 0,079, considerada moderada e sugerindo efeitos de subdivisão populacional. Os níveis de diversidade genética encontrados e a redução populacional causada pela redução e fragmentação dos habitats em que a espécie ocorre sugerem medidas de conservação ex situ e demandam maior rigor na proteção legal de áreas de proteção permanente.

ABSTRACT The Varronia curassavica Jacq. (Boraginaceae) is present in restinga vegetation and shows relevant medicinal properties. The species is exploited by local communities and by the pharmaceutical industry; however, it lacks ecological and genetic information. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the genetic diversity of three V. curassavica populations in restinga areas of Santa Catarina Island. Leaves of 50 adult individuals were sampled in each of the three study areas and the allelic frequencies were obtained from 14 allozyme loci. Twenty-five different alleles were found in the three populations, two of them being exclusive. The populations showed, on average, a genetic diversity of 0,111 and a fixation index of -0,060 (-0,273 to 0,222). The diversity levels are intermediary, similar to those ones owned by species of the same family or with similar ecological traits. The fixation indexes were all significant and discrepant among the populations, with two of them showing excess of heterozygotes. The genetic divergence among populations was significant and equal to 0,079, which is considered moderate and suggests effects of population subdivision. The levels of genetic diversity found and the population decrease caused by reduction and fragmentation of habitats in which the species are present implies in ex situ conservation measures and a higher enforcement of the legal preservation of permanent protected areas.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi utilizar métodos bacteriológicos e moleculares para a identificação do Mycobacteriumbovis em lesões observadas em carcaças de bovinos durante a inspeção post mortem de rotina em matadouros-frigoríficos com serviço de inspeção oficial. Foram acompanhados o abate e a inspeção de 825.394 bovinos, sadios, ao exame antemortem pelo serviço de inspeção oficial em 10 matadouros-frigoríficos do estado da Bahia, entre abril de 2009 e abril de 2012. Cento e oitenta bovinos apresentaram lesões sugestivas de tuberculose e outras linfadenites, as quais foram avaliadas quanto à presença de Mycobacterium bovis por exame bacteriológico e pela PCR multiplex. A maioria das lesões estava localizada em linfonodos do trato respiratório e 71% eram provenientes de bovinos machos com até 32 meses de idade. No isolamento bacteriano, 13,9% (25/180) das amostras apresentavam colônias pequenas, de superfície granular e de coloração creme-amareladas, em meio de cultura Stonebrink-Leslie, e o crescimento médio foi de 34 dias. Todos os esfregaços dos isolados evidenciaram BAAR, e, pela PCR multiplex, 56% (14/25) dos isolados foram identificados como M. bovis. A associação entre exame post mortem, bacteriológico e PCR multiplex permitiu a identificação do agente de forma rápida e em regiões com status sanitário de baixa prevalência, demonstrando ser importante para a detecção dos focos de tuberculose bovina e o auxílio nos programas de controle e erradicação da tuberculose.

The aim of the present study was to perform bacteriological and molecular methods for identification of Mycobacterium bovis in lesions derived from bovine carcasses detected during routine post-mortem examination in officially inspected slaughterhouses. We checked the slaughter and inspection of 825,394 bovines, health upon ante-mortem examination, by the official service in 10 slaughterhouses of Bahia state from April, 2009 to April 2012. Lesions suggestive of tuberculosis were collected from 180 bovines and further evaluated by bacteriology and multiplex PCR. The majority of lesions were located in the respiratory tract lymph nodes and 71% were from male bovines up to 32 months old. 13.9% of samples presented small, granular and creamy-yellowish colonies after being cultured in Stonebrink-Leslie with an average growth time of 34 days. All smears from the isolated samples were Acid Fast Bacilli (AFB) and among them 56% were identified by mPCR as M. bovis. Thus, the association between post-mortem examination, culture and multiplex PCR allowed the bacillus identification in a reduced time and in regions of low prevalence, pointing out its importance for bovine tuberculosis detection and as a supportive tool for the tuberculosis control and eradication program.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the incidence of and the main risk factors associated with cutaneous adverse events in patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis following anti-TNF-α therapy. METHODS: A total of 257 patients with active arthritis who were taking TNF-α blockers, including 158 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 87 with ankylosing spondylitis and 12 with psoriatic arthritis, were enrolled in a 5-year prospective analysis. Patients with overlapping or other rheumatic diseases were excluded. Anthropometric, socioeconomic, demographic and clinical data were evaluated, including the Disease Activity Score-28, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index and Psoriasis Area Severity Index. Skin conditions were evaluated by two dermatology experts, and in doubtful cases, skin lesion biopsies were performed. Associations between adverse cutaneous events and clinical, demographic and epidemiological variables were determined using the chi-square test, and logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors. The significance level was set at p<0.05. RESULTS: After 60 months of follow-up, 71 adverse events (73.85/1000 patient-years) were observed, of which allergic and immune-mediated phenomena were the most frequent events, followed by infectious conditions involving bacterial (47.1%), parasitic (23.5%), fungal (20.6%) and viral (8.8%) agents. CONCLUSION: The skin is significantly affected by adverse reactions resulting from the use of TNF-α blockers, and the main risk factors for cutaneous events were advanced age, female sex, a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, disease activity and the use of infliximab.

This work was carried out in order to evaluate the effects of supplemental carbohydrases individually (α-amylase) or associated with the enzyme complex (α-galactosidase, galactomananase, xylanase and β-glucanase) on performance, carcass yield and economic viability in diets for broiler. Were used 576 females chicks, Cobb lineage, distributed in a completely randomized design consisting of 4 treatments and 6 replicates of 24 birds each plot. The diets were formulated based on corn and soybean meal, and the treatments consisted of PC= positive control diet NC= negative control diet with 35 kcal reduction in the initial stage and 70 Kcal/kg of feed for the growth and final stages RA= diet reformulated with exogenous amylase (isonutriente to PC) and RE= diet reformulated with exogenous α-amylase and enzyme complex (isonutriente to PC). The nutritional matrix exogenous amylase for RA in the diet was 116.67 Kcal/kg in the initial stage and 233.34 Kcal/kg in the growth and final stages. The nutritional matrix exogenous amylase for RE was 116.67 Kcal/kg at the initial and 200.00 Kcal/kg in the growth and final stages. There was appreciation of the ingredients corn and soybean meal at 1.5 and 6% in AME, and 2% respectively in limiting amino acids for both ingredients. The average performance were evaluated from 1 to 21, 1 to 35 and 1 to 42 days. Feed intake in all periods, did not differ significantly between treatments (p>0.05). Likewise, weight gain in the total period, 1-42 days, caused no difference between treatments. The worst feed conversion and production factors (p<0.05) were observed in animals treated with diets with the enzyme complex. There was no significant difference in carcass yield and no cutting evaluated (p>0.05). The evaluation of carcass yield and cuts, and the economic viability were evaluated at 42 days. The use of enzyme complex associated with exogenous enzyme α-amylase worsens performance and generates the same economic response in the production of broilers, without changing the carcass and its cuts yield.

Objetivou-se com este experimento avaliar os efeitos da suplementação de carboidrases de forma individual (α-amilase) ou associada ao complexo enzimático (α-galactosidase, galactomananase, xilanase e β-glucanase), sobre o desempenho, rendimento de carcaça e viabilidade econômica em rações para frangos de corte. Foram utilizados 576 pintos de corte, fêmeas, da linhagem Cobb, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado constituído por 4 tratamentos e 6 repetições de 24 aves cada. As rações foram formuladas à base de milho e farelo de soja, sendo os tratamentos constituídos por CP= ração-controle-positivo; CN= ração-controle-negativo, com redução em 35 Kcal na fase inicial e 70 Kcal/kg de ração para as fases de crescimento e final; RA= ração reformulada com amilase exógena (isonutriente a CP) e RE= ração reformulada com α-amilase exógena e complexo enzimático (isonutriente a CP). A matriz nutricional da amilase exógena na ração RA foi de 116,67 Kcal/kg na fase inicial e 233,34 Kcal/kg nas fases de crescimento e final. Para a ração RE a matriz nutricional da amilase exógena foi de 116,67 Kcal/ kg na fase inicial e 200,00 Kcal/kg nas fases de crescimento e final. Houve valoração dos ingredientes milho e farelo de soja em 1,5 e 6% na EMAn, respectivamente e 2% nos aminoácidos limitantes para ambos ingredientes. As médias de desempenho foram avaliadas nos períodos de 1 a 21, 1 a 35 e 1 a 42 dias. A avaliação de rendimento de carcaça e cortes, bem como a viabilidade econômica foi avaliada aos 42 dias. O consumo de ração, em todos os períodos, não diferiu significativamente entre os tratamentos avaliados (p>0,05). Da mesma forma, o ganho de peso no período total, de 1 a 42 dias, não ocasionou diferença entre os tratamentos. A pior conversão alimentar e fatores de produção (p<0,05) foram obtidos pelos animais submetidos à ração com complexo enzimático. Não houve diferença significativa no rendimento de carcaça e de nenhum corte avaliado (p>0,05). A utilização de complexo enzimático associado à enzima exógena α-amilase piora o desempenho e gera mesma resposta econômica na produção de frangos de corte, sem alterar o rendimento de carcaça e de seus cortes.

Avaliaram-se o desempenho, o coeficiente de digestibilidade da matéria seca (CDMS), da proteína bruta (CDPB), a retenção aparente de cálcio (Ca) e fósforo (P) e a energia metabolizável aparente corrigida para balanço de nitrogênio (EMAn) de dietas suplementadas com altos teores de fitase (FTU) para frangos, até 35 dias de idade. Foram utilizados 1848 pintos, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com sete tratamentos e oito repetições de 35 aves. Os tratamentos foram: T1: dieta-controle; T2: dieta com inclusão de 1.500FTU/kg; T3: 3.000FTU/kg; T4: 4.500FTU/kg; T5: 6.000FTU/kg; T6: 8.000FTU/kg e T7: 10.000FTU/kg de ração. No 10º e 28º dias de experimento, quatro e três aves, respectivamente, foram transferidas para gaiolas de metabolismo. A partir da inclusão de 4.500FTU/kg, o desempenho das aves de 1 a 35 dias foi semelhante ao das aves do grupo-controle (P>0,05). Não houve diferença (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos nos CDPB e nos valores de EMAn, porém, na fase inicial, observou-se maior aproveitamento da MS com os altos níveis de fitase (P<0,05). Em relação à retenção de Ca e P, houve efeito positivo da suplementação enzimática, com aumento significativo do uso desses minerais pelas aves. Concluiu-se que é possível suplementar altos teores de fitase valorando adequadamente os nutrientes da dieta.

The digestibility of dry matter (DMD), and of crude protein (CPD), the apparent retention of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) and apparent metabolizable energy corrected by nitrogen balance (AME) of diets supplemented with high levels of phytase (FTU) for broilers, 35 days old were evaluated. A total of 1848 chicks were distributed in a completely randomized experiment with seven treatments and eight repetitions. The treatments were: T1: control diet, T2: inclusion of 1,500FTU/kg; T3: 3,000FTU/kg; T4: 4,500FTU/kg; T5: 6,000FTU/kg; T6:8,000FTU/kg; and T7: 10,000FTU/kg feed. On the 10th and 28th days of the experiment, four and three birds, respectively, were transferred to metabolism cages. An addition of 4,500FTU/kg from 1 to 35 days resulted in a performance similar to the control group (P>0.05). There was no difference (P>0.05) among treatments for DMD and AME, however, during the initial phase there was a higher use of MS with high levels of phytase (P<0.05). Regarding the retention of Ca and P, a positive effect of enzyme supplementation significantly increased the use of these minerals by birds. It is possible that high levels of supplemental phytase adequate valuing the nutrients.

The present study examined the distribution of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes and subtypes in a hemodialysis population in Goiás State, Central Brazil, and evaluated the efficiency of two genotyping methods: line probe assay (LiPA) based on the 5' noncoding region and nucleotide sequencing of the nonstructural 5B (NS5B) region of the genome. A total of 1095 sera were tested for HCV RNA by RT-nested PCR of the 5' noncoding region. The LiPA assay was able to genotype all 131 HCV RNA-positive samples. Genotypes 1 (92.4%) and 3 (7.6%) were found. Subtype 1a (65.7%) was the most prevalent, followed by subtypes 1b (26.7%) and 3a (7.6%). Direct nucleotide sequencing of 340 bp from the NS5B region was performed in 106 samples. The phylogenetic tree showed that 98 sequences (92.4%) were classified as genotype 1, subtypes 1a (72.6%) and 1b (19.8%), and 8 sequences (7.6%) as subtype 3a. The two genotyping methods gave concordant results within HCV genotypes and subtypes in 100 and 96.2% of cases, respectively. Only four samples presented discrepant results, with LiPA not distinguishing subtypes 1a and 1b. Therefore, HCV genotype 1 (subtype 1a) is predominant in hemodialysis patients in Central Brazil. By using sequence analysis of the NS5B region as a reference standard method for HCV genotyping, we found that LiPA was efficient at the genotype level, although some discrepant results were observed at the subtype level (sensitivity of 96.1% for subtype 1a and 95.2% for subtype 1b). Thus, analysis of the NS5B region permitted better discrimination between HCV subtypes, as required in epidemiological investigations.

O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar a prevalência de candidíase em transplantados renais. Foram avaliados os prontuários dos pacientes transplantados no Hospital das Clínicas de Ribeirão Preto de fevereiro de 1968 a fevereiro de 1995. Nesse período foram transplantados 620 pacientes. Destes, 87 apresentaram 107 episódios de candidíase. Locais mais acometidos: trato urinário com 55 episódios, trato respiratório com 28, e trato gastrointestinal com 16. O agente etiológico mais freqüente foi C. albicans com 65 casos seguido de C. tropicalis com 12 e C. glabrata com 11 casos. As infecções do trato urinário mostraram incidência maior (61,7%) nos primeiros 6 meses. A maioria se apresentou clínicamente como infecção bacteriana. No trato respiratório, as infecções foram caracterizadas por recuperação do agente no escarro. No trato gastrointestinal, 9/16 episódios foram esofágicos, com epigastralgia, dor retroesternal, às vezes acompanhados de candidíase oral ou odinofagia. Nos outros episódios o agente foi recuperado nas fezes com quadro clínico de gastroenterite. Nas infecções dos tratos urinário e respiratório, houve associação da candidíase com antibioticoterapia prévia (76% e 67% respectivamente), além de infecções bacterianas concomitantes (34% e 64% respectivamente). As infecções por Candida sp tiveram prevalência geral em torno de 14,5%. A localização predominante foi no trato urinário e, em seguida, nos tratos respiratório e gastrointestinal, apresentando alto índice de associação com antibioticoterapia prévia e infecções bacterianas.

The medical records of 620 patients submitted to renal transplant from February 1968 to February 1995 were surveyed for Candida infection. Of these, 87 presented 107 episodes of candidiasis. In 42.9% the infection appeared up to 6 months after the transplant. The most frequent involved sites were: urinary tract, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract. The most frequent etiological agents were: C. albicans, C. tropicalis and C. glabrata. Most urinary tract infections ocurred in the first 6 months (61,7%) and manifested clinically as a bacterial infection. In the respiratory tract infections were characterized by isolation of the agent in sputum. In the gastrointestinal infections, 9/16 episodes were esophageal. There were 3 deaths directly related to Candidiasis (one pulmonary and 2 disseminated cases). In the urinary tract, and respiratory tract infections there was association of candidiasis with previous antibiotic treatment (76% and 67%, respectively), and with concomitant bacterial infections (34% and 64%, respectively). The overall prevalence of Candida infections was 14.5%. The predominant location was in the urinary tract (51,0%), followed by the respiratory (26,0%) and gastrointestinal tract (15,0%), with a high rate of association with previous antibiotic treatment and bacterial infections.
