ABSTRACT: The use of nitrogen (N) in pastoral ecosystems leads to increased productivity, as it allows the plant to elongate its leaves and, therefore, grazing herbivores harvest the green leaves. However, there are very volatile N sources, which can be replaced by ammonium nitrate, which is less volatile and less dependent on the application in rainy days. The treatments are compound of Marandu palisade grass pastures managed under continuous stocking at a canopy height of 25 cm, with different levels of N fertilizer: 0, 75, and 150 kg ha-1year-1, as ammonium nitrate (32% of N), with four replicates (pastures) in a completely randomized design. Nitrogen uptake (54.9, 96.5, 113.8 kg N ha-1) and N nutrition index (0.67, 0.98, 1.15) were different between N level, respectively, 0, 75 and 150 kg ha-1 year-1. The N recovery (58.3, 40.9 %) differed between 75 and 150 kg ha-1 year-1, respectively. The dose of 75 kg N kg ha-1 year-1 results in better N utilization, while the dose of 150 kg N ha-1 year-1 enables greater stocking rate; therefore, requiring less grazing area.

RESUMO: O uso de nitrogênio (N) em ecossistemas pastoris leva ao aumento da produtividade, pois permite que a planta alongue suas folhas e, portanto, os herbívoros colham as folhas verdes. Porém, existem fontes de nitrogênio muito voláteis, que devem ser substituídas por nitrato de amônio, que é menos volátil e menos dependente da aplicação em dias chuvosos. Os tratamentos foram compostos por pastagens de capim-marandu, manejadas sob lotação contínua, na altura do dossel a 25 cm, com diferentes doses de N: 0, 75 e 150 kg ha-1 ano-1, na forma de nitrato de amônio (32% de N), com quatro repetições (piquetes), em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. A absorção de nitrogênio (54,9; 96,5; 113,8 kg N ha-1) e o índice nutricional de N (0,67; 0,98; 1,15) foram diferentes entre as doses de N, respectivamente, 0, 75 e 150 kg ha-1 ano-1. A recuperação de N (58,3; 40,9%) diferiu entre 75 e 150 kg ha-1 ano-1, respectivamente. A dose de 75 kg N kg ha-1 ano-1 resultou em melhor aproveitamento do N, enquanto a dose de 150 kg N ha-1 ano-1 possibilita maior taxa de lotação; portanto, exigindo menos área de pastagem.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to characterize four corn and sorghum co-products (DDG) in terms of their protein and carbohydrate fractions; we also evaluated the effects of substituting the protein source of the conventional supplement by DDG on consumption and nutrient digestibility in confined finishing cattle. Thirty-six male Nellore cattle with a mean age of 24 months were used. The treatments were: FA: concentrate with corn as an energy source and cottonseed meal as a protein source; DDG50: concentrate with a 50% substitution of the FA protein source by DDG; DDG100: concentrate with 100% substitution of the FA protein source by DDG. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments and three replicates (pens) containing four animals per pen. We found that the use of DDG in the finishing phase did not interfere with the animals’ food intake or the digestibility of the nutrients (p > 0.05). Nutrients were used by the animals; therefore, DDGs may be viable substitutes of cottonseed meal. We conclude that the bromatological composition of this co-product is influenced a lot during processing; therefore, the nutritional values of this co-product present in the composition tables may not be true.

Abstract Isotonic repositories are specially designed to promote rehydration during or after physical exercise. These beverages are processed for commercialization from synthetic flavorings and dyes with sensorial characteristics similar to those of fruits, in order to attenuate their natural acidity. The aim of the present study was to develop two formulations of isotonic drinks without synthetic dyes and with functional attributes based on concentrated hydroethanolic extracts of peel and pulp of Myrciaria jaboticaba. Determination of chemical (sodium, potassium and calcium, total phenolics, total anthocyanins, total flavonoids, total condensed tannins), physical (objective color analysis), and physical-chemical characteristics (pH, acidity, total soluble solids), as well as sensory evaluation through preference testing was carried out. In addition, the drinks presented dark red coloration, according to the chromaticity diagram. The sensory evaluation results revealed that the beverage formulated with 12% pulp extract stood out as the preferred beverage among the judges.

RESUMO Objetivo: identificar, analisar e sintetizar os resultados de estudos qualitativos primários que abordaram a experiência do pai no cuidado ao filho hospitalizado. Método: trata-se de metassíntese qualitativa por meio da qual analisaram-se 12 artigos, selecionados nas bases de dados Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, Public Medline, Scopus, PsycINFO e Web of Science, publicados entre 1995 e 2015. As etapas metodológicas propostas por Sandelowski e Barroso foram utilizadas para sistematizar a revisão, bem como conceitos da antropologia das masculinidades, para análise e discussão da síntese. Resultados: a síntese foi apresentada por dois temas: 1) dilemas paternos - o que o homem sente e enfrenta durante a hospitalização do filho, destacando o envolvimento emocional e mudança na relação familiar e laboral, e 2) identidades paternas - masculinidades reajustadas diante do adoecimento do filho, que revela marcas identitárias e a paternidade reprimida, no ambiente hospitalar. Ambos os temas ilustram os desafios e o reajuste da identidade paterna. Considerações finais: conhecer as vivências do pai durante a hospitalização do filho e a maneira como os desafios para o reajuste de papéis relativos à masculinidade poderá ampliar o alcance da enfermagem, e dos demais profissionais de saúde, alertando para a importância de incluir o pai como protagonista ou coadjuvante no cuidado à criança hospitalizada.

Method: this is a qualitative meta-synthesis through which 12 articles were analyzed, selected in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature databases, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, Public Medline, Scopus, PsycINFO and Web of Science, published between 1995 and 2015. The methodological steps proposed by Sandelowski and Barroso were used to systematize the review, as well as concepts from the anthropology of masculinities to analyze and discuss the synthesis. Results: the synthesis was presented by means of two themes: 1) paternal dilemmas - what man feels and faces during the hospitalization of the child, highlighting the emotional involvement and change in the family and work relationship, and 2) paternal identities - masculinities readjusted in view of the child’s illness, which reveals identity marks and repressed fatherhood in the hospital environment. Both themes illustrate the challenges and readjustment of parental identity. Final considerations: to get to know the experiences of the father during the hospitalization of the child and the way in which the challenges for the readjustment of roles related to masculinity could broaden the range of nursing and other health professionals, alerting to the importance of including the father as a protagonist or coadjuvant in the care for hospitalized children.

Lipids have been used in ruminant feed to replace high amounts of grain for increasing the diet energy density, performance and meat quality. This study evaluated the qualitative characteristics of meat from feedlot heifers fed with sources of lipid supplements. Twenty-one crossbred heifers (1/4Nelore × 1/4Santa Gertrudis × 1/2Braunvieh) were used. Each heifer received 60 % forage with a base of corn silage and 40 % concentrate, resulting in 5.8 % lipid content in the total diet. The following sources of lipids were used: soybeans, protected fat and soybean oil. There were no differences on physical characteristics of meat samples from heifers fed with the lipid sources. Soybeans increased the concentration of linoleic acid, content of polyunsaturated fatty acid and activity of the Δ9-desaturase C16 enzyme in the Longissimus muscle. The use of soybean oil in the diet increased the oleic acid, monounsaturated fatty acid, total cis- and trans-fatty acids (C18:0) and the activity of the Δ9-desaturase C16 enzyme in the subcutaneous fat. Diets with soybean grain had greater deposition of linoleic and linolenic acids than diets with fat protected and greater presence of these essential fatty acids are associated to a better composition and meat quality.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different lipid sources on nutrient intake, performance, development and carcass characteristics of heifers raised in confinement. Twenty-one crossbreed heifers (Nellore × Santa Gertrudis × Braunvieh) received 600 g/kg forage composed of corn silage and 400 g/kg concentrate with a 58.0 g/kg fat content in the total diet. The following lipid sources were used: soybeans, protected fat (Megalac-E®) and soybean oil. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three treatments and seven replicates, and the means were compared by the Tukey test at 5%. The protected fat diet resulted in a greater intake of dry matter (8.80 kg/d) when compared with the other diets. The animals that were fed the protected fat diet had a higher average daily weight gain and slaughter weight. Feed conversion and protein efficiency rate were not influenced by lipid sources. Carcass yield was not influenced by the different diets.

CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO: Na última década ocorreu aumento dramático na sobrevida dos prematuros de muito baixo peso ao nascer. Contudo, a morbidade respiratória é ainda um problema. O objetivo deste estudo é verificar a associação entre mecânica pulmonar, avaliação estrutural pulmonar e a morbidade respiratória no primeiro ano de vida. TIPO DE ESTUDO E LOCAL: Coorte prospectivo realizado no Instituto Fernandes Figueira, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. MÉTODOS: Participantes: prematuros com peso de nascimento inferior a 1.500 g. Antes da alta hospitalar foram realizadas prova de função pulmonar e tomografia computadorizada de tórax de alta resolução. As crianças foram acompanhadas durante o primeiro ano de vida e avaliadas quanto à presença de morbidade respiratória (síndrome obstrutiva de vias aéreas, pneumonia, internação). Resultados da prova de função pulmonar, tomografia de tórax e co-variáveis potencialmente associadas com morbidade respiratória foram avaliadas independentemente, usando-se risco relativo (RR). Os riscos relativos foram posteriomente ajustados através de regressão logística. RESULTADO: Estudamos 97 prematuros com peso de nascimento médio de 1.113 g e idade gestacional 28 semanas. A complacência pulmonar estava alterada em 40% dos casos e a resistência, em 59%. Alterações tomográficas ocorreram em crianças, morbidade respiratória em 53%. Na análise bivariada, as co-variáveis associadas com a morbidade respiratória foram: ventilação mecânica, uso prolongado de oxigênio (além de 28 dias), oxigênio às 36 semanas, doença de membrana hialina, pneumonia neonatal, persistência do canal arterial. Na análise multivariada o risco para alteração simultânea da complacência pulmonar e tomografia de tórax foi 2,7 (intervalo de confiança, IC: 0,7-10,0). No cálculo do risco ajustado as co-variáveis pneumonia neonatal e ventilação mecânica obtiveram uma magnitude maior. CONCLUSÃO: Encontramos altas taxas de alterações na mecânica pulmonar e na tomografia de tórax. Mais de 50% das crianças apresentaram morbidade respiratória no primeiro ano de vida. Os fatores de risco estatisticamente significativos foram pneumonia neonatal e assistência ventilatória.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: There have been dramatic increases in very low birth weight infant survival. However, respiratory morbidity remains problematic. The aim here was to verify associations between pulmonary mechanics, pulmonary structural abnormalities and respiratory morbidity during the first year of life. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective cohort study at Instituto Fernandes Figueira, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro. METHODS: Premature infants with birth weight < 1500 g were studied. Lung function tests and high-resolution chest tomography were performed before discharge. During the first year, infants were assessed for respiratory morbidity (obstructive airways, pneumonia or hospitalization). Neonatal lung tests and chest tomography and covariables potentially associated with respiratory morbidity were independently assessed using relative risk (RR). RR was subsequently adjusted via logistic regression. RESULTS: Ninety-seven newborn infants (mean birth weight: 1113g; mean gestational age: 28 weeks) were assessed. Lung compliance and lung resistance were abnormal in 40% and 59%. Tomography abnormalities were found in 72%; respiratory morbidity in 53%. Bivariate analysis showed respiratory morbidity associated with: mechanical ventilation, prolonged oxygen use (beyond 28 days), oxygen use at 36 weeks, respiratory distress syndrome, neonatal pneumonia and patent ductus arteriosus. Multivariate analysis gave RR 2.7 (confidence interval: 0.7-10.0) for simultaneous lung compliance and chest tomography abnormalities. Adjusted RR for neonatal pneumonia and mechanical ventilation were greater. CONCLUSIONS: Upon discharge, there were high rates of lung mechanism and tomography abnormalities. More than 50% presented respiratory morbidity during the first year. Neonatal pneumonia and mechanical ventilation use were statistically significant risk factors.

OBJETIVO: Determinar os níveis de chumbo no sangue de crianças que moravam próximo a uma fundição de chumbo desativada na Cidade de Santo Amaro da Purificação, Estado da Bahia, em setembro de 1998; e identificar fatores associados à variação destes níveis. MÉTODOS: Estudo de corte transversal com crianças de 1 a 4 anos de idade que residiam a menos de 1 km da fundição. Mães ou responsáveis por 47 crianças responderam questionários sobre transtornos do hábito alimentar (comer barro, terra, reboco ou outros materiais) e outros aspectos epidemiológicos relevantes. A concentração de chumbo no sangue foi determinada por espectrofotometria de absorção atômica. RESULTADOS: O nível médio de chumbo foi de 17,1 ± 7,3 mig/dL. Os níveis de chumbo no sangue foram cerca de 5 mig/dL mais elevados em crianças que tinham transtorno do hábito alimentar, independentemente da idade, presença de escória visível no peridomicílio, situação de emprego do pai, história familiar de intoxicação pelo chumbo e desnutrição. CONCLUSÕES: O passivo ambiental da fundição de chumbo, desativada em 1993, permanece como um fator de risco relevante para elevar os níveis desse metal no sangue de crianças, particularmente aquelas que apresentam transtornos do hábito alimentar.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the blood lead levels in children living an inactive lead foundry in the city of Santo Amaro da Purificação,state of Bahia, in September of 1998; and to identify factors associated with differences in these levels. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with children between 1 and 4 years of age living within 1 km of the lead foundry. Mothers or guardians of 47 children answered a questionnaire concerning ingestion of clay, soli, plaster and / or other materias (pica),and other relevant epidemiological aspects. The concentration of lead in blood was determined by atermined by atomic absorption espectrophotometry. RESULTS: The mean lead level was 17.1 ± 7. 3 mug/dL. Blood lead levels were approximately 5 mug/ dl greater amoong children with pica, regardless of age, visible presence of scum surrounding the home, employment status of the father, family history of lead poisoning, and malnutrition. CONCLUSIONS: The environmental legacy of the lead foundry, which was shut down in 1993, continues to represent a relevant risk factor for increased blood lead levels in children, especially those presenting pica.

CONTEXTO: O desenvolvimento pulmonar do bebê prematuro pode ser afetado por lesão ao pulmão nas primeiras semanas de vida, podendo ocasionar alterações na mecânica pulmonar. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a relação entre a mecânica pulmonar e as alterações estruturais pulmonares em prematuros de muito baixo peso (peso de nascimento inferior a 1.500 g). TIPO DE ESTUDO: Estudo de corte transversal avaliando a mecânica pulmonar (medidas a complacência e a resistência) e estrutura pulmonar (através da tomografia de tórax de alta resolução) próximo à alta hospitalar de 86 prematuros de muito baixo peso, nascidos no Instituto Fernandes Figueira, uma instituição pública, terciária, no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. A complacência e resistência pulmonares foram medidas durante o sono tranqüilo. A tomografia de tórax foi realizada com o equipamento Pro Speed-S. MAIN MEASUREMENTS: Na análise estatística, utilizamos análise de variância para múltiplas comparações (ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis). O nível de significância estatística empregado foi 0,05. RESULTADOS: Em 34 bebês (43%), foram encontrados resultados alterados tanto para a complacência quanto para a resistência pulmonares e, em 20 crianças (23,3%), ambos os resultados foram normais. As médias da complacência e resistência pulmonares da população estudada foram respectivamente 1,30 ml/cm H2O/Kg e 63,7 cm H2O/l/s. Em 62 bebês (72%), os exames tomográficos apresentavam alterações pulmonares. A maioria das crianças mostrou mais de uma alteração, descritas como opacidade em vidro fosco, banda parenquimatosa, atelectasia, bolha/cisto. As médias dos valores de complacência para as crianças com tomografia de tórax normal, 1 ou 2 alterações e 3 ou mais alterações, foram significativamente diferentes: 1,49, 1,31, 1,16 (p = 0,015). Não encontramos relação entre resistência pulmonar e o número de alterações tomográficas. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados mostram alta prevalência de anormalidades funcionais e tomográficas em bebês prematuros, assintomáticos, próximo à alta hospitalar. Mostram também uma relação entre anormalidades pulmonares morfológicas e funcionais.

CONTEXT: Premature infant lung development may be affected by lung injuries during the first few weeks of life. Lung injuries have been associated with changes in lung mechanics. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate an association between lung mechanics and lung structural alterations in very low birth weight infants (birth weight less than 1500 g). DESIGN: A cross-sectional evaluation of pulmonary mechanics (lung compliance and lung resistance) and high resolution computed tomography of the chest at the time of discharge, in 86 very low birth weight infants born at Instituto Fernandes Figueira, a tertiary public healthcare institution in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Lung compliance and resistance were measured during quiet sleep. High resolution computed tomography was performed using Pro Speed-S equipment. MAIN MEASUREMENTS: Statistical analysis was performed by means of variance analysis (ANOVA/ Kruskal Wallis). The significance level was set at 0.05. RESULTS: Abnormal values for both lung compliance and lung resistance were found in 34 babies (43%), whereas 20 (23.3%) had normal values for both lung compliance and lung resistance. The mean lung compliance and lung resistance for the group were respectively 1.30 ml/cm H2O/kg and 63.7 cm H2O/l/s. Lung alterations were found via high-resolution computed tomography in 62 (72%) infants. Most infants showed more than one abnormality, and these were described as ground glass opacity, parenchymal bands, atelectasis and bubble/cyst. The mean compliance values for infants with normal (1.49 ml/cm H2O/kg) high resolution computed tomography, 1 or 2 abnormalities (1.31 ml/cm H2O/kg) and 3 or more abnormalities (1.16 ml/cm H2O/kg) were significantly different (p = 0.015). Our data were insufficient to find any association between lung resistance and the number of alterations via high-resolution computed tomography. CONCLUSION: The results show high prevalence of lung functional and tomographic abnormalities in asymptomatic very low birth weight infants at the time of discharge. They also show an association between lung morphological and functional abnormalities.
