ABSTRACT Chondrosarcoma, an unusual malignant neoplasm, develops in cartilaginous tissue and presents low rate of metastasis, mainly affecting the axial skeleton from the adult to senile dogs. In the face of unusual occurrence of chondrosarcoma in the long bones of young dogs, the present report aimed to describe it in the right humerus of a two-and-a-half-year-old Siberian Husky, attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Franca, with limping of the right thoracic limb, for 20 days. The radiographic examination of the humerus showed bone lysis and periosteal proliferation. In the incisional biopsy, proliferation of atypical chondrocytes with diffuse distribution, interspersed with compact bone matrix, was observed. The amputation of the limb was performed, and the fragment histopathological analysis showed grade I chondrosarcoma. Periodic returns were made for neoplastic staging, and at 240 days after surgery lung metastases were detected, however, the tutor did not authorize chemotherapy and radiotherapy for financial reasons and due to the absence of respiratory symptoms so far (410 days after surgery). Although uncommon, chondrosarcoma can affect the long bones of young dogs, with clinical signs similar to other bone neoplasms, and, even with the radical limb amputation, can demonstrate systemic metastasis.

RESUMO O condrossarcoma, neoplasia maligna incomum, desenvolve-se em tecido cartilaginoso e apresenta baixo índice de metástases, acometendo principalmente o esqueleto axial de cães adultos a senis. Diante da ocorrência incomum de condrossarcoma em ossos longos de cães jovens, o presente relato teve como objetivo descrevê-lo no úmero direito de um Husky Siberiano de dois anos e meio de idade, atendido no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade de Franca, com claudicação do membro torácico direito, há 20 dias. O exame radiográfico do úmero mostrou lise óssea e proliferação periosteal. Na biópsia incisional, observou-se proliferação de condrócitos atípicos com distribuição difusa, intercalados com matriz óssea compacta. Foi realizada a amputação do membro, e a análise histopatológica do fragmento evidenciou condrossarcoma grau I. Foram feitos retornos periódicos para estadiamento neoplásico e, aos 240 dias após a cirurgia, foram detectadas metástases pulmonares. O tutor não autorizou quimioterapia e radioterapia por motivos financeiros e por ausência de sintomas respiratórios até o momento (410 dias após a cirurgia). Apesar de incomum, o condrossarcoma pode acometer os ossos longos de cães jovens, com sinais clínicos semelhantes a outras neoplasias ósseas, e, mesmo com a amputação radical do membro, pode demonstrar metástase sistêmica.

Obesity has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer recurrence and death. Some readily available biomarkers associated with systemic inflammation have been receiving attention as potential prognostic indicators in cancer, including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). This study aimed to explore the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and invasive breast cancer and the association of NLR, PLR, and BMI with breast cancer outcomes. We undertook a retrospective study to evaluate patients treated for breast cancer over 14 years. Clinicopathological data was obtained before receiving any treatment. Of the 1664 patients included with stage I-III, 567 (34%) were obese (BMI≥30 kg/m2). Obese patients had larger tumors compared to non-obese patients. Higher BMI was associated with recurrence and worse survival only in patients with stage I disease. NLR and PLR were classified into high and low level groups. The NLRhigh (NLR>4) was found to be an independent prognostic factor for recurrence and mortality, while the PLRhigh (PLR>150) group had no impact on survival. A subgroup of patients with NLRhigh and BMIhigh had the worst disease-free survival (P=0.046), breast cancer-specific survival (P<0.001), and overall survival (P=0.006), compared to the other groups. Patients with early-stage breast cancer bearing NLRhigh and BMIhigh had worse outcomes, and this might be explained by the dysfunctional milieu of obesity in adipose tissue and its effects on the immune system. This study highlights the importance of lifestyle measures and the immune system interference with clinical outcomes in the early breast cancer setting.

RESUMO: A presença das plantas daninhas na área de cultivo do repolho promove redução de produtividade e qualidade do produto comercial. Diante da dificuldade de manejo e escassez de produtos registrados para o controle de plantas daninhas na cultura do repolho, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a tolerância do cultivar de repolho Astrus Plus ao 2,4-D e dicamba. Para isso, dois experimentos foram conduzidos: um em condições controladas e o outro em campo. No primeiro ensaio avaliou-se a ação dos herbicidas sobre o crescimento inicial da cultura, sendo mensurada a matéria seca da parte aérea e raiz e a intoxicação das plantas. No segundo, foram avaliadas as intoxicações nas plantas e os componentes de produção da cultura. O ensaio em ambiente protegido comprovou a hipótese de o repolho apresentar tolerância aos herbicidas aplicados, pois não foram observadas intoxicação de plantas e alterações na matéria seca. Todavia, no ensaio em campo, observou-se que o herbicida 2,4-D causou intoxicações e reduções nos componentes de produção que comprovam que este herbicida é severamente tóxico à cultura. No entanto, o dicamba não provocou danos à cultura na fase inicial de cultivo e não reduziu a produtividade, indicando potencial uso. Conclui-se que o cultivar de repolho Astrus Plus é tolerante ao dicamba. O 2,4-D não causa intoxicações a este cultivar em condições controladas, mas, em campo, o repolho não foi tolerante, podendo levar as plantas de repolho à morte.

ABSTRACT: The presence of weeds in cabbage cultivation areas causes a reduction in the productivity and quality of the commercial product. Given the difficulties in management and the scarcity of registered products for weed control in cabbage cultivation, this study aimed to evaluate the tolerance of the cabbage cultivars Astrus Plus to the herbicides 2,4-D and dicamba. Two experiments were performed; one under controlled conditions and another conducted in the field. The efficacy of the herbicides on the initial growth of the crop was evaluated in the first experiment, measuring the dry matter of the aerial part, the root of the plant, and evaluating the intoxication of the plants. Plant poisoning was also evaluated in the second experiment, along with crop production. No changes in the dry matter and plant poisoning were observed after the analyses performed in the controlled environment, showing that the cabbage presented tolerance to the applied herbicides. On the other hand, results from the experiments performed in the field showed that herbicide 2,4-D poisoned the cabbage causing reductions in production. Dicamba did not cause any damage in the initial phase of cultivation to this crop, with no reductions in its production. These results indicated the potential use of this herbicide in cabbage cultivation. It can be concluded from this study that the cultivar Astrus Plus is tolerant to dicamba. Under controlled conditions, 2,4-D does not cause toxicity to this cultivar, different from its effect when used in the field, where this herbicide can kill the cabbage plants.

RESUMO O presente trabalho objetivou comparar o efeito do flunixin meglumine, cetoprofeno e meloxicam no tratamento da dor pós-operatória de ovinos submetidos à implantação de cânula ruminal e orquiectomia. Foram utilizados 32 ovinos, machos, pesando em média 35,5±3,5kg, distribuídos em três grupos: GFlu (flunixin meglumine 1,1mg/kg i.v.), GCet (cetoprofeno 3,0mg/kg i.v.) e GMel (meloxicam 0,5mg/kg i.v.). Exame clínico e coletas de sangue foram realizados no M0 (pré-avaliação), M1 (10 minutos após a pré-avaliação), M2 (início da sutura para fixação da cânula ruminal), M3 (logo após o término da cirurgia) e em duas, 12, 23, 25, 48 e 72 horas após a cirurgia (M2h, M12h, M23h, M25h, M48h e M72h), quando foram avaliados cortisol, glicose, proteína total, albumina, γ-glutamiltransferase (GGT), aspartato aminotransferase (AST), creatina quinase (CK), ureia, creatinina e hemograma. Nos M2h, M12h, M23h, M25h e M48h, foi realizada avaliação comportamental. O GFlu apresentou maior concentração de cortisol no M12h e no M48h e maior escore de dor na fístula e no testículo no M12h, quando comparado ao GMel. Os animais do GCet apresentaram menor interação com outros membros da baia no M23h. A ação analgésica do meloxicam foi maior em animais submetidos à implantação de cânula ruminal e orquiectomia, quando comparado ao flunixin meglumine e ao cetoprofeno.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to compare the effect of flunixin meglumine, ketoprofen, and meloxicam in the treatment of postoperative pain in sheep submitted to ruminal cannulation and orchiectomy. 32 sheep were submitted to implantation of rumen cannula and orchiectomy, divided into three groups: GFlu (Flunixin meglumine 1,1mg/kg i.v.); GCet (Ketoprofen 3,0mg/kg i.v.); GMel (Meloxicam 0,5mg/kg i.v.). Clinical examination and blood samples were performed at M0 (pre-evaluation), M1 (10 minutes after pre-evaluation), M2 (beginning ruminal cannula), M3 (immediately post-surgery), and M2h, M12h, M23h, M25h, M48h and M72h (2h, 12h, 23h, 25h, 48h and 72 hours post-surgery) with the evaluation of cortisol, glucose, total protein, albumin, γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), urea, creatinine and blood count. At M2h, M12h, M23h, M25h and M48h a behavioral evaluation was performed. The GFlu showed higher concentration of cortisol at M12h and M48h and greater pain score related with fistula and testis procedures at M12h when compared to GMel. Animals in the GCet group presented lower interaction with other animals in the same M23h paddock. The analgesia provided by Meloxicam was higher than flunixin meglumine and ketoprofen in animals submitted to placement of ruminal cannula and orchiectomy.

RESUMO Com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade dos ovos de codornas alimentadas com diferentes aditivos em duas fases de produção, 360 codornas foram distribuídas em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, em esquema de parcela subdividida no tempo (de nove até 23 e de 24 até 39 semanas de idade), com cinco tratamentos e oito repetições de nove aves cada, organizados da seguinte forma: controle, antibiótico, prebiótico, probiótico e simbiótico. As variáveis analisadas foram: unidade Haugh, índice de gema, porcentagem dos componentes do ovo, espessura de casca medida pelo micrômetro e pelo MEV. O fornecimento dos aditivos no segundo período aumentou a unidade Haugh e nos dois períodos avaliados proporcionou aumento da porcentagem de gema e de casca e da espessura da casca e de suas membranas. A inclusão dos aditivos foi mais eficiente em aumentar o peso dos ovos e a porcentagem de gema e de casca no segundo período. A espessura da casca (MEV) melhorou após inclusão de antibiótico e simbiótico na ração no segundo período. A inclusão de aditivos na ração melhora a qualidade dos ovos de codornas durante toda a fase produtiva. Antibiótico e simbiótico são mais eficazes em melhorar a espessura da casca dos ovos produzidos durante o segundo período produtivo.

ABSTRACT To evaluate the quality of eggs of quails fed with different additives in two stages of the productive period, 360 quails were distributed in a completely randomized design in a split plot scheme in time (9 to 23 and 24 to 39 weeks of age) with five treatments and eight repetitions of nine birds each, organized as follows: control, antibiotic, prebiotic, probiotic, and symbiotic. The analyzed variables were: Haugh unit, yolk index, percentage of egg components, shell thickness measured by the micrometer and the SEM. The supply of additives in the second period increased Haugh units, and in both periods provided an increase in the percentage of yolk and shell and improved the thickness of the shell and its membranes. The inclusion of additives was more effective in promoting weight gain in eggs and the percentage of egg yolk and egg shell from 24 to 39 weeks of age. The shell thickness (SEM) improved after inclusion of antibiotic and symbiotic in feed in the second period. The addition of additives in food improved the quality of Japanese quail egg throughout the productive period. Antibiotics and symbiotics proved to be more effective in improving shell thickness of the eggs produced in the second productive period.

No presente estudo, avaliaram-se os efeitos da alimentação de diferentes concentrados sobre o comportamento de ovinos. A hipótese é a de que a polpa cítrica estimularia a ruminação e reduziria o risco de ocorrência de urolitíase, podendo substituir outros concentrados. Dez ovinos adultos, mestiços da raça Santa Inês, foram distribuídos em um quadrado latino com cinco tratamentos, sendo quatro destes contendo dietas com 30% de feno de capim coast-cross e 70% dos seguintes concentrados: polpa cítrica peletizada, polpa cítrica farelada, fubá de milho e farelo de trigo, e uma dieta controle com 80% de feno e 20% de ração comercial peletizada. Após 21 dias de adaptação, a cada dieta os animais foram colocados em monitoramento visual, com registro de atividade a cada três minutos, durante 24 horas consecutivas, por meio do qual foi identificado o tempo gasto na ruminação, na ingestão de alimentos e em repouso. A posição dos animais (em pé ou deitados) também foi observada. O período diurno foi considerado entre seis e 18 horas. Para comparação entre os tratamentos, os dados foram avaliados por meio de ANOVA e do teste de Tukey. Para a avaliação circadiana e entre as posições, foi utilizado o teste t de Student. Dietas com polpa cítrica promoveram tempo de ruminação semelhante aos do grupo de controle (601, 590 e 669 min, respectivamente), mas superior ao grupo alimentado com fubá de milho (421min). A produção de saliva estimada no grupo controle (26L/d) foi maior do que nos demais grupos, e os grupos com polpa cítrica tiveram maior produção de saliva do que o grupo com fubá de milho (21L/d). Ovinos em dietas ricas em concentrados descansam mais durante a noite. Em todas as dietas, cerca de 90% da ruminação ocorreu com os animais deitados. A polpa cítrica peletizada e a farelada, e em menor grau o farelo de trigo, promoveram adequadamente a ruminação. Este concentrado pode ser utilizado como medida preventiva visando diminuir a incidência de urolitíase em rebanhos ovinos.

In this study we examined the effects of different feed concentrates on sheep behaviour. Our hypothesis was that citric pulp would stimulate rumination and be capable of replacing other concentrates traditionally used for feeding in confinement, to reduce the risk of urolithiasis. Ten adult Santa Inês sheep were distributed in a Latin square with five different diets, one control diet with 80% hay and 20% commercial feed and four diets containing 30% coast-cross hay and 70% of the following concentrates: pelleted citrus pulp, citrus pulp meal, cornmeal or wheat bran. After 21d of adaptation to each one of the five diets, the sheep were visually monitored for 24 h at 3 min intervals to record the time spent ruminating, time spent eating and time spent resting; the animals' positions (standing or lying down) were also noted. Daytime was considered to be from 06:00h to 18:00h. The data were evaluated using ANOVA, with Tukey post-hoc test or throughout Two-sample T test for circadian and position assessment. Citrus pulp diets resulted in time spent ruminating similar to the control diet (601, 590 and 669 min, respectively), but greater (P<0.05) than the cornmeal group (421min), which showed that citrus pulp generated effective rumination. The estimated saliva production in the control diet (26L) was greater than in the other groups, and was greater in the citrus pulp groups (24L/d) than cornmeal (21L/d). Feeding with cornmeal led to shorter time spent eating and time spent ruminating than all other diets. The sheep had higher time spent resting at night when fed concentrates (P<0.05). For all diets, about 90% of the time spent ruminating occurred with the animals lying down. Pelleted citrus pulp, citrus pulp meal and to a lesser degree wheat bran, led to adequate time spent ruminating. The use of citrus pulp can act as a preventive management measure to reduce the incidence of urolithiasis in sheep flocks.
