RESUMEN Objetivos. Determinar la seropositividad a anticuerpos anti-IgG por infección de Echinococcus granulosus, Fasciola hepatica y cisticerco de Taenia solium y describir las características de los infectados en 13 regiones de la sierra peruana entre 2016 y 2019. Materiales y métodos. Estudio observacional transversal, que analizó 7811 fichas epidemiológicas de la vigilancia basada en laboratorio de las zoonosis parasitarias del periodo 2016-2019. El diagnóstico se realizó mediante la detección de anticuerpos tipo IgG anti E. granulosus, F. hepatica y cisticerco de T. solium utilizando antígenos nativos mediante el ensayo inmunoabsorbente ligado a enzimas (ELISA) e Inmunoblot. La diferencia en la frecuencia de casos de estas zoonosis según características identificadas se realizó mediante la prueba chi-cuadrado de Pearson y prueba exacta de Fisher. Resultados. Se determinó una seropositividad de 7,9% para fascioliasis, 4,9% para equinococosis quística, y 2,3% para cisticerco de T. solium. Estas frecuencias fueron mayores en Cerro de Pasco para equinococosis quística (24,5%), en Ayacucho para cisticerco de T. solium (4,5%) y en Puno para fascioliasis (40,6%). Entre las características sociodemográficas, se encontró una diferencia estadísticamente significativa en la frecuencia de casos para todas las zoonosis según grupo etario, ocupación, y región de residencia. Además, se encontró diferencia con el consumo de verduras en emolientes, y entre las características clínico-epidemiológicas con tener antecedentes familiares de las zoonosis parasitarias. Conclusiones. A partir de las 7811 muestras evaluadas, se encontró que estas zoonosis parasitarias están distribuidas en 13 regiones de la sierra del Perú, ocasionando un problema de salud importante, con frecuencias que varían según diversas características.

RESUMEN La demanda mundial de hortalizas saludables está en constante crecimiento debido a cambios en las preferencias de los consumidores por alimentos sanos, frescos y nutritivos. En este contexto, se requiere investigar en nuevas técnicas para optimizar el rendimiento de hortalizas como el brócoli, en base al uso de fuentes de materia orgánica. El objetivo de la investigación fue evaluar el efecto de la utilización de vermicompost, acolchado orgánico y cobertura plástica en la producción sostenible de brócoli y en algunas propiedades del suelo. El estudio se realizó en plantas de brócoli cv. Legacy, en un terreno agrícola ubicado en la quebrada de Tucos del anexo La Tomilla, distrito Cayma, provincia y región Arequipa, Perú. El experimento fue establecido con un diseño de bloques completos al azar en arreglo factorial de parcelas dividas. El tipo de cobertura (acolchado orgánico, cobertura plástica, y sin cobertura) se estableció en las parcelas grandes, y las dosis de vermicompost (4 y 8 t ha-1) en las parcelas pequeñas; de la interacción de los factores, surgieron 6 tratamientos con tres repeticiones. Los resultados demostraron que la cobertura plástica junto a la incorporación de 8 t ha-1 de vermicompost mejoraron el rendimiento del cultivo de brócoli (16666,66 kg ha-1), con un 98% de la producción alcanzando calidad de primera y 2% de segunda. Además, este tratamiento mantuvo la materia orgánica (4,27%), pH (7,1), salinidad (1,22 dS m-1), y temperatura (13,3 oC) del suelo en valores aceptables para el cultivo. La mayor rentabilidad del cultivo de brócoli fue 96,8%, con la utilización de cobertura plástica y 4 t ha-1 de vermicompost.

ABSTRACT The global demand for healthy vegetables is steadily growing due to changes in consumer preferences for healthy, fresh, and nutritious foods. In this context, there is a need for new techniques to optimize yields of vegetable crops, such as broccoli, based on the use of organic matter sources. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the use of vermicompost, organic mulch and plastic cover on the sustainable production of broccoli and on some soil properties. Broccoli plants cv. ‘Legacy’ were used, and the trial was conducted on an agricultural area located in the Tucos ravine of La Tomilla, Cayma district, Arequipa Province, Arequipa Region, Peru. The experiment was carried out using a randomized complete block design in a split-plot factorial arrangement. The type of cover (organic mulch, plastic cover, and no cover) was established in large plots, and the doses of vermicompost (4 and 8 t ha-1) in small plots; the interaction of the factors resulted in 6 treatments with three replicates. The results showed that plastic mulching along with the incorporation of 8 t ha-1 of vermicompost improved broccoli yield (16666.66 kg ha-1), with a 98% of the production corresponding No.1 grade and 2% to No. 2 grade. In addition, the same treatment maintained organic matter (4.27%), pH (7.1), salinity (1.22 dS m-1), and soil temperature (13.3 oC) at acceptable values for the crop. The highest broccoli crop profitability was 96.8%, with the use of plastic mulch and 4 t ha-1 of vermicompost.

RESUMEN Objetivo. Describir el proceso de virtualización de los cursos de patología general, especial y la percepción de los estudiantes. Métodos. Estudio no experimental, prospectivo y transversal. Para la enseñanza virtual de los cursos se utilizó la plataforma Moodle y, para las prácticas de histopatología, se utilizó la plataforma Pathpresenter. Participaron 126 estudiantes del curso de patología general y 133 de patología especial. Se utilizó el cuestionario desarrollado por Justin Krawiec y Quality Matters for Higher Education Rubric, conformado por 27 preguntas con respuestas tipo escala de Likert en un rango de 1 a 5, donde 1 se valora como totalmente en desacuerdo y 5 como totalmente de acuerdo. Tiene una confiabilidad de 0,96 según coeficiente de alfa de Cronbach. Las valoraciones globales se establecieron mediante percentiles. Resultados. Uso de Moodle: la claridad del contenido obtuvo una valoración de 3,9 y 4, mientras que la presencia de problemas para acceder al Moodle, obtuvo una valoración promedio de 2,4 y 3. En la dimensión clases y evaluación, la utilidad de las prácticas virtuales obtuvieron una valoración promedio de 3,8 y 3,5. Con respecto, a la tercera dimensión, experiencia en la virtualización de microscopía, la afirmación, la plataforma Pathpresenter es fácil de usar y efectiva para el propósito de los cursos, obtuvo una valoración promedio de 4,1 y 4,2. Conclusión. Los estudiantes valoraron positivamente las prácticas virtuales de patología, la facilidad de acceso y calidad de las imágenes. Sin embargo, manifestaron tener dificultades técnicas para acceder a la plataforma Moodle.

ABSTRACT Objective. Describe the virtualization process of general and special pathology courses and the perception of students. Methods. Non-experimental, prospective, and cross-sectional study. For the virtual teaching of the courses, the Moodle platform was used; and, for histopathology practices, the Pathpresenter platform was used. 126 students from the general pathology course and 133 from special pathology participated. The questionnaire developed by Justin Krawiec and Quality Matters for Higher Education Rubric was used, consisting of 27 questions with Likert scale responses ranging from 1 to 5, where 1 is valued as totally disagree and 5 as totally agree. It has a reliability of 0.96 according to Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The global assessments were established using percentiles. Results. Use of Moodle: the clarity of the content obtained an evaluation of 3.9 and 4, while the presence of problems accessing Moodle, obtained an average evaluation of 2.4 and 3. In the dimension classes and evaluation, the usefulness of the virtual practices obtained an average valuation of 3.8 and 3.5. Regarding the third dimension, experience in microscopy virtualization, the statement, "Pathpresenter platform is easy to use and effective for the purpose of the courses", obtained an average rating of 4.1 and 4.2. Conclusion. The students positively value the virtual practices of pathology, the ease of access and the quality of the images. However, they report having technical difficulties in accessing to Moodle platform.

ABSTRACT Objectives. To evaluate and compare the macronutrient distribution of the food baskets delivered by Peruvian municipalities during the COVID-19 pandemic according to the geographic domain and assigned budget level. Materials and methods. Secondary analysis of the database “Consultation of Acquisition and distribution of basic necessities of the basic family basket” of the General Comptroller of the Republic. Stratified probability sampling was carried out. The caloric intake distribution was calculated according to macronutrients and compared with the Acceptable Intervals of Macronutrient Distribution (IADM) of the Nutrition Institute of Central America and Panama (INCAP) and the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI). Results. At the national level, the median caloric intake of proteins was 7.7%; for carbohydrates it was 62.5%; and for fats it was 28.1%. The proportion of municipalities with protein deficit was 84%; Municipalities with excess carbohydrates ranged from 16.5% (according to INCAP) to 35.9% (according to INDECI), and with excess fat, it was between 61.6% (according to INCAP) and 20.2% (according to INDECI). According to INDECI, nationally only 9.2% of municipalities delivered baskets with an adequate distribution of macronutrients; Metropolitan Lima stands out with the highest proportions of adequate baskets, while in the Jungle region this percentage was less than 5%. Conclusions. Most of the baskets delivered did not have adequate macronutrient distribution. Especially the baskets of municipalities outside of Metropolitan Lima or those that had smaller budget. Carbohydrates and fats were the nutrients that were included in excess, while proteins were deficient.

Evaluar y comparar la distribución de macronutrientes de las canastas alimentarias entregadas por las municipalidades peruanas durante la pandemia de COVID-19 según dominio geográfico y nivel de presupuesto asignado. Materiales y métodos. Análisis secundario de la base de datos «Consulta de adquisición y distribución de bienes de primera necesidad de la canasta básica familiar» de la Contraloría General de la República. Se realizó un muestreo probabilístico estratificado. Se calculó la distribución del aporte calórico según macronutrientes y se comparó con los intervalos aceptables de distribución de macronutrientes (IADM) del Instituto de Nutrición de Centro América y Panamá (INCAP) y del Instituto Nacional de Defensa Civil (INDECI). Resultados. A nivel nacional la mediana del aporte calórico de las proteínas fue 7,7%; carbohidratos 62,5%, y grasas 28,1%. La proporción de municipalidades con canastas con déficit de proteínas fue de 84%. Las municipalidades con canastas con exceso de carbohidratos variaron de 16,5% (según INCAP) a 35,9% (según INDECI) y con exceso de grasas fue 61,6 % (según INCAP) y 20,2% (según INDECI). Según INDECI, a nivel nacional solo el 9,2% de municipalidades entregaron canastas con distribución adecuada de macronutrientes, aquí destaca Lima Metropolitana con las proporciones más altas; mientras que en la selva este porcentaje fue menor del 5%. Conclusiones. La mayoría de las canastas entregadas no tuvieron distribución adecuada de macronutrientes, en especial las canastas de municipalidades fuera de Lima Metropolitana o las que contaban con menor presupuesto. Los carbohidratos y las grasas fueron los nutrientes que se incluyeron en exceso, mientras que las proteínas tuvieron déficit.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to determine the association of fasciolosis in school-age children with intestinal parasites, food consumption and animal husbandry. The research was analytical, prospective, cross-sectional, and relational. In total, 295 serological and stool samples were obtained, and an epidemiological interview was carried out on children of both sexes, aged 3 to 19 years from 23 institutions of initial, primary and secondary education, with the informed consent of their parents. The serological diagnosis was made using the IgG immunoblot technique and the IgG ELISA test and the stool diagnosis was made with the rapid sedimentation technique modified by Lumbreras. Risk factors were obtained by epidemiological interview. The prevalence of fasciolosis was 11.2% (95% CI = 7.4-14.9; 33/295). Significant differences were found between educational institutions and communities of origin. Both in univariate and multivariate analyses determined that drinking well water and raising guinea pigs were associated with fasciolosis.

RESUMEN El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la asociación de fasciolosis en niños de edad escolar con parásitos intestinales, consumo de alimentos y crianza de animales. La investigación fue de tipo analítico, prospectivo, transversal y de nivel relacional. Se obtuvieron 295 muestras serológicas y coprológicas y se realizó una entrevista epidemiológica a niños de ambos sexos, de 3 a 19 años de 23 instituciones de educación inicial, primaria y secundaria, con el consentimiento informado de sus progenitores. El diagnóstico serológico se realizó mediante la técnica de inmunoblot IgG y la prueba de ELISA IgG y el diagnóstico coprológico se realizó con la técnica de sedimentación rápida modificada por Lumbreras. Los factores de riesgo se obtuvieron mediante entrevista epidemiológica. La prevalencia de fasciolosis fue de 11.2% (IC95%=7.4-14.9; 33/295). Se encontró diferencias significativas entre instituciones educativas y comunidades de procedencia. Tanto en análisis univariado como el multivariado determinaron que beber agua de pozo y criar cuyes estuvieron asociados a fasciolosis.

ABSTRACT The aim of this of the study was to determine relative economic weights for 10 traits related to fibre quality in Huacaya alpacas, through the Reciprocal of the phenotypic standard deviation of the trait and the Regression of the traits on the economic benefit. In total, 22 543 data per character were used, determined in samples of fleece from alpacas from the Puno Region. The economic weights obtained by the first procedure assume different values, which are inversely proportional to the value of the phenotypic standard deviation of the trait and quantify the number of times that the variance contains the relevant phenotypic standard deviation. Those obtained by the regression method also assume different values (positive and negative), which do not necessarily guide the trend, but quantify the change in the slope to a change in an average unit of the phenotype. The economic weight values are not similarly proportional by both methods. The economic weights obtained are the most appropriate for the characteristics related to the fineness of the fibre in alpacas, but not necessarily considered as selection criteria.

RESUMEN El estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar pesos económicos relativos para 10 caracteres relacionados a la calidad de la fibra en alpacas Huacaya, a través del Recíproco de la desviación estándar fenotípica del carácter y la Regresión de los caracteres sobre el benéfico económico. Se utilizaron 22 543 datos por carácter, determinados en muestras de vellón de alpacas de la Región Puno. Los pesos económicos obtenidos por el primer procedimiento asumen diferentes valores, los que son inversamente proporcionales al valor de la desviación estándar fenotípica del carácter, y cuantifican el número de veces que la variancia contiene a la desviación estándar fenotípica pertinente. Los obtenidos por el método de regresión asumen también valores diferentes (positivos y negativos), que no necesariamente orientan la tendencia, pero cuantifican el cambio en la pendiente a un cambio en una unidad promedio del fenotipo. Los valores de pesos económicos no son similarmente proporcionales por ambos métodos. Los pesos económicos obtenidos son los más apropiados para las características relacionadas con la finura de la fibra en alpacas, pero no necesariamente considerados como criterio de selección.

ABSTRACT The fibres of white (n = 143) and coloured (n = 100) Huacaya alpacas participating in the LVIII Livestock Fair of Southern Peru (FEGASUR) were characterized. The fibres were processed in the Fibre Laboratory of the Puno Regional Government. The frequencies were described under a fixed effects model (p <0.05). The frequency distributions of the fibre attributes differ from the normal curve to a different degree and depending on the variable, except for the Comfort Factor (CF), they show a tail bias to the right; being moderate the asymmetry of the Mean Diameter (MD) and slight asymmetry of the Index of Curvature (IC). Meanwhile, the dispersion variables, CF and Fibre length (LM) presented very asymmetric curves. White fibres show greater fineness than coloured fibres (p<0.05), without differences for the sex factor. The standard deviation of the mean diameter [SD (DM)] and the Coefficient of variation of the mean diameter [CV (DM)] of the white fibres had lower dispersion (p<0.05), while the CF and IC presented better values (p<0.05). The LM did not show differences between white and coloured fibres. The attributes, depending on the category of the alpacas, are related to age, except for CV(DM). It is concluded that the Huacaya alpacas of the breeding stock, white or coloured, differ from each other and are peculiar with respect to the reports that do not typify the type of herd.

RESUMEN Se caracterizaron las fibras de alpacas Huacaya blances (n=143) y de color (n=100) participantes en la LVIII Feria Ganadera del Sur del Perú (FEGASUR). Las fibras fueron procesadas en el Laboratorio de Fibras del Gobierno Regional Puno. Se describen las frecuencias bajo un modelo de efectos fijos (p<0.05). Las distribuciones de frecuencias de los atributos de la fibra difieren de la curva normal, en distinto grado y según sea la variable; a excepción del Factor de Confort (FC), presentan un sesgo de cola hacia la derecha; siendo moderada la asimetría del Diámetro Medio (DM) y ligera asimetría del Índice de Curvatura (IC). En tanto, las variables de dispersión, FC y Largo de mecha (LM) presentaron curvas muy asimétricas. Las fibras blancas exhiben mayor finura que las de color (p<0.05), sin diferencias para el factor sexo. La Desviación estándar del diámetro medio [DS(DM)] y el Coeficiente de variación del diámetro medio [CV(DM)] de las fibras blancas tuvieron menor dispersión (p<0.05), en tanto que el FC y el IC presentaron mejores valores (p<0.05). El LM no mostró diferencias entre fibras blancas y de color. Los atributos, en función a la categoría de las alpacas, se relacionan con la edad, a excepción del CV(DM). Se concluye que las alpacas Huacaya de plantel, blanca o de color, difieren entre sí y son peculiares respecto a los reportes que no tipifican el tipo de rebaño.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Fascioliasis is caused by the trematode Fasciola hepatica and affects herbivorous and omnivorous animals as well as humans. Schoolchildren are the most affected group, and the organ most commonly targeted is the liver. This parasite requires an intermediate reservoir and host to complete its biological cycle. Objective: Determine the association of fascioliasis to nutritional status and enteroparasite coinfection in children. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2016 to April 2017 in the district of Santa María de Chicmo, Apurímac Region. The child population aged 6-16 years was composed of 2 172 individuals. The sample size was 435 children, and it was determined by simple random sampling. Additionally, in order for the sampling to be more efficient, the total sample size was distributed between the strata Primary E.I. and Secondary E.I., for 209 and 226 samples, respectively. However, 493 coprological and serological samples were proportionally taken from the total 23 educational institutions. Results: Prevalence of fascioliasis was 5.3% (26/493; CI95%=3.2-7.4). The educational institutions with the highest prevalence were Taramba with 17.2% (5/29; CI95%= 5.9-35.8), Libertadores de América with 16.1% (5/31; CI95%= 5.5-33.7), Mariano Melgar with 15% (3/20; CI95%= 3.2-37.9) and Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe with 10.8% (4/37; CI95%= 3-25.4). No association was found between fascioliasis and nutritional anthropometric assessment or enteroparasite coinfection in children (p˃ 0.05). Conclusions: Fascioliasis was not found to affect the nutritional status of children. On the other hand, the clinical signs attributed to fascioliasis also correspond to the high presentation of enteric parasites.

RESUMEN Introducción: La fascioliasis es causada por el trematodo Fasciola hepatica que afecta a animales herbívoros, omnívoros y al humano. Los niños de edad escolar son los más afectados y el órgano más dañado es el hígado. Este parásito requiere de reservorio y huésped intermediario para completar su ciclo biológico. Objetivo: Determinar la asociación de la fascioliasis con el estado nutricional y coinfección enteroparasitaria en niños. Métodos: La investigación se realizó entre septiembre de 2016 y abril de 2017 en el distrito de Santa María de Chicmo, región Apurímac. El estudio fue analítico de corte transversal. La población de niños de 6 a 16 años estuvo constituida por 2 172 individuos. El tamaño de muestra fue de 435 niños y se determinó mediante un muestreo simple al azar. Además, para que el muestreo fuera más eficiente se distribuyó el tamaño total de la muestra entre los estratos I.E. Primaria e I.E. Secundaria, para un resultado de 209 y 226 muestras, respectivamente. Sin embargo, se logró tomar 493 muestras coprológicas y serológicas repartidas proporcionalmente entre la totalidad de 23 instituciones educativas. Resultados: La prevalencia de fascioliasis fue de 5,3 % (26/493; IC95%=3,2-7,4). Las instituciones educativas con mayor prevalencia fueron: Taramba con 17,2 % (5/29; IC95%= 5,9-35,8), Libertadores de América con 16,1 % (5/31; IC95%= 5,5-33,7), Mariano Melgar con 15 % (3/20; IC95%= 3,2-37,9) y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe con 10,8 % (4/37; IC95%= 3-25,4). No se encontró asociación de fascioliasis con la valoración nutricional antropométrica ni con la coinfección enteroparasitaria en niños (p˃ 0,05). Conclusiones: La fascioliasis no estaría afectando el estado nutricional de los niños; asimismo, los signos clínicos, atribuidos a fascioliasis, corresponderían también a la alta presentación de parásitos entéricos.

La agricultura atraviesa una crisis mundial, la productividad y la sostenibilidad son dos factores que los agricultores están desafiando para producir más alimentos, preservar el medio ambiente y la salud de los seres vivos. Los países desarrollados y subdesarrollados necesitan adoptar nuevas alternativas productivas, que mejoren la calidad de los alimentos, preservando el medio ambiente y los ecosistemas. Actualmente, el abuso y mal uso de los productos químicos ha causado una serie de problemas como contaminación (suelo y agua) y resistencia de las plagas a los ingredientes activos. El cambio climático y otras transformaciones por las que atraviesa la agricultura, generaron hace décadas la aparición de la industria de insumos biológicos, que son productos amigables con el medio ambiente y la salud humana. Estos productos tienen características y modos de acción que ayudan al control de plagas con menos riesgos que el uso de pesticidas. Esta revisión recopila la importancia, el uso y las aplicaciones de productos biológicos basados en hongos benéficos en América Latina, destacando el proyecto "Biocontrol para Sistemas Agrícolas Sustentables" ejecutado en Ecuador, financiado por MFAT Nueva Zelandia, el cual ha demostrado la eficiencia del uso de microorganismos en la agricultura a través de los resultados de las investigaciones llevadas a cabo durante la ejecución de este Proyecto. Además, se mencionan aspectos relacionados con el control de calidad de productos biológicos y las regulaciones para su registro.

Agriculture is going through a global crisis, productivity and sustainability are two factors, which farmers are challenging to produce more food, preserve the environment and the health of living beings. Developed and developing countries need to adopt new productive alternatives, which improve the quality of food, preserving the environment and the ecosystems. Actually, the abuse and misuse of chemical products has caused a series of problems such as contamination (soil and water) and pest resistance to active ingredients. Climate change and other transformations that agriculture is going through, generated decades ago the emergence of the industry of biological inputs, which are friendly products with the environment and human health. These products have characteristics and modes of action that help pest control with fewer risks than the use of pesticides. This review compiles the importance, use and applications of biological products based on beneficial fungi in Latin America, highlighting the project "Biocontrol for Sustainable Farming Systems" executed in Ecuador, funded by MFAT New Zeland, which has shown the efficiency of the use of microorganisms in the agriculture through the research results obtained during the execution of this Project. In addition, aspects related to quality control of bioproducts and regulations for their registration are also mentioned.

Summary The possibility for educational institutions of all levels to seek to consolidate inclusion mechanisms is the ideal of equity in education. For this reason, the present work opted for the non-experimental descriptive design, aimed at comparative analysis of the perception of the inclusion process in two basic level educational institutions in two districts of North Lima. The sample was made up of 120 teachers from the primary education level, to which the adapted questionnaire of indicators of Inclusion - Bristol (2019) was applied, made up of three dimensions: Creating inclusive cultures, with 13 items, Carrying out inclusive policies, with 11 items and Developing inclusive practices with 16 items; which was validated by expert judgment. The results indicated that there were significant differences in the level of perception of the inclusion process between the teachers of both locations, as well as variations in the perception of the dimensions proposed. It was concluded that the existence of differences in the perception of inclusion of the teachers of the two districts has been due to the positions of the teachers regarding the institutional policy and their perception of the inclusion process.

Resumen La posibilidad de que las instituciones educativas de todo nivel se orienten a buscar consolidar mecanismos de inclusión es el ideal de la equidad en educación. Por ello el presente trabajo se optó por el diseño descriptivo no experimental, orientado al análisis comparativo de la percepción del proceso de inclusión en dos instituciones educativas del nivel básico en dos distritos de Lima Norte. La muestra estuvo conformada por 120 docentes del nivel de educación primario, a los cuales se les aplicó el cuestionario adaptado de indicadores de Inclusión - Bristol (2019), conformado por tres dimensiones: Creando culturas inclusivas, con 13 ítems, Realizando políticas inclusivas, con 11 ítems y Desarrollando prácticas inclusivas con 16 ítems; el cual fue validado por juicio de expertos. Los resultados indicaron que existieron diferencias significativas en el nivel de percepción del proceso de inclusión entre los docentes de ambas locaciones, así como variaciones en la percepción de las dimensiones planteadas. Se concluyó que la existencia de diferencias en la percepción de inclusión de los docentes de los dos distritos se ha debido a las posturas de los docentes frente a la política institucional y su percepción del proceso de inclusión.

The aim of this study was to determine the association of fascioliasis with the breeding of animals, housing characteristics and food consumption of children in the district of Santa María de Chicmo, Apurimac, Peru. Serological samples were taken from 493 children aged 6 to 16 years, males and females, with the informed consent of their parents. The prevalence, determined by the immunoblot technique was 5.3% (95% CI = 3.2% -7.4%, 26/493). The univariate analysis showed that the breeding of cattle and cats, and raising three or more pigs were factors associated with fascioliasis. The breeding of more than five sheep resulted as a protection factor. Fascioliasis in children was not associated with the characteristics of the dwellings or the consumption of food. It is concluded that the district of Santa María de Chicmo is mesoendemic for fascioliasis in children, and that the rearing of some species of domestic animals involves risk of human fascioliasis.

El estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la asociación de fascioliasis con la crianza de animales, características de la vivienda y consumo de alimentos de niños del distrito de Santa María de Chicmo, Apurímac, Perú. Se tomaron muestras serológicas a 493 niños de 6 a 16 años, de ambos sexos, con el consentimiento informado de sus padres. La prevalencia, determinada mediante la técnica de inmunoblot fue de 5.3% (IC95% = 3.2%-7.4%; 26/493). El análisis univariado demostró que la crianza de bovinos y gatos, así como la crianza de tres o más cerdos fueron factores asociados a fascioliasis. La crianza de más de cinco ovinos configuró un factor de protección. La fascioliasis en niños no estuvo asociada a las características de las viviendas ni al consumo de alimentos. Se concluye que el distrito de Santa María de Chicmo es mesoendémico para fascioliasis en niños, y que la crianza de algunas especies de animales domésticos implica riesgo de fascioliasis humana.

Osteoarthritis on the cervical vertebrae, C3-C7, accumulates as a function of age, life style, diet and severity of long-term skeletomuscular stress. However, the degree to which age (older adult and elderly) and sex differences impact on the manifestation of osteoarthritis remains difficult to assess because of the variability of biological aging and the lack of discrete post-reproductive age categories. The aim of this investigation was to score the degree of osteophytic marginal lipping, porosity and eburnation on the cervical vertebrae of identified individuals from the William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection of the Forensic Anthropology Center of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA, to address whether the expression of osteoarthritic features differs (1) between older adults, 50-55 years, and elderly adults, 70-76 years, within each sex; (2) between both sexes of the same age category; and (3) between the sexes regardless of age. Osteological remains included were accessioned between 2000 and 2010 to reflect contemporary variation, and only C3 to C7 were scored given the distinctions in morphology and function of the atlas and axis. The vertebrae were separated by number and analyzed using Mann-Whitney U tests. Osteoarthritic features are generally more severe in males compared to females although eburnation is elevated in older females (50-55 years) compared to their elderly counterparts (70-76 years). Both sexes show an accumulation of osteoarthritic features as a consequence of advancing age. However, sex differences between elderly adults (70-76 years) are less extreme compared to when all females and males are considered regardless of age. La osteoartritis en las vértebras cervicales, C3-C7, se acumula debido a la edad, el estilo de vida, la dieta y la gravedad del estrés esqueletomuscular a largo plazo. Sin embargo, el grado en que la edad (adultos mayores y ancianos) y las diferencias sexuales afectan la manifestación de la osteoartritis sigue siendo difícil de evaluar debido a la variabilidad del envejecimiento biológico y la falta de categorías discretas de edad postreproductiva. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el grado de inflamación osteofítica, porosidad y eburnación en las vértebras cervicales de individuos identificados de la Colección Osteológica William M. Bass del Centro de Antropología Forense de la Universidad de Tennessee, Knoxville, EE. UU, para determinar si la expresión de las características osteoartríticas difiere (1) entre adultos mayores, de entre 50-55 años, y ancianos, de 70-76 años, dentro de cada sexo; (2) entre ambos sexos de la misma categoría de edad; y (3) entre los sexos, independientemente de la edad. Los restos osteológicos incluidos fueron seleccionados entre 2000 y 2010 para reflejar la variación contemporánea, y solo se analizaron las vértebras cervicales C3 a C7, dadas las distinciones en morfología y función del atlas y del axis. Las vértebras se separaron por número y se analizaron mediante la prueba Mann-Whitney. Las características osteoartríticas son generalmente más serias en hombres que en mujeres, aunque la eburnación es elevada en mujeres mayores (50-55 años) en comparación con sus contrapartes mayores (70-76 años). Ambos sexos muestran una acumulación de rasgos osteoartríticos como consecuencia de la edad avanzada. Sin embargo, las diferencias en función del sexo entre los adultos mayores (70-76 años) son menos extremas en comparación con las diferencias observadas al considerar hombres y mujeres con independencia de la edad de los individuos. ABSTRACT Objective: to describe biosecurity of respiratory diseases practiced by workers in fourteen cities of Peru. Methodology: a descriptive multicenter cross-sectional study was carried out in February through a self-administered questionnaire, where some concepts related to biosecurity of respiratory diseases and hygiene practices were asked. These were described in frequencies and percentages. Results: Of 4287 respondents, 68% (2913) were men; the average age was 31 years (interquartile range: 24-40 years). 91% and 53% knew what respiratory masks are used for and how respiratory diseases are transmitted, respectively. 46% self-medicate when they have the cold; 31-41% of workers, relatives or co-workers have been vaccinated against seasonal flu, these percentages go up when they were asked if they would be vaccinated in current year and most would not be vaccinated because they do not know where (Range: 35-40%); the arm and the hand are the most used to cover when sneezing. Conclusion: These characteristics show a population that may be susceptible to get and transmit respiratory diseases, so educational measures and interventions should be taken to improve knowledge/attitudes and to create good practices.

RESUMEN Objetivo: caracterizar la bioseguridad respiratoria que practican los trabajadores en catorce ciudades del Perú. Metodología: trabajo transversal descriptivo de tipo multicéntrico, a través de una encuesta auto-aplicada, donde se consultó temas relacionados con la bioseguridad respiratoria y de las prácticas de higiene que tenían. Estos se describieron con frecuencias y porcentajes. Resultados: de los 4287 encuestados, el 68% (2913) fueron hombres, la mediana de edades fue de 31 años (rango intercuartílico: 24-40 años). El 91% y el 53% sabían para que se usan las mascarillas respiratorias y la forma de trasmisión de las enfermedades respiratorias, respectivamente. El 46% se auto-medica cuando está resfriado; se han vacunado contra la gripe estacional entre 31-41% para los trabajadores, familiares o compañeros de trabajos, estos porcentajes suben cuando se les preguntó si se vacunarían el año en curso y la mayoría de los que no se vacunarían es porque no saben dónde (rango: 35-40%); el brazo y la mano son los más usados para cubrirse cuando estornudan. Conclusión: estas características muestran a una población que puede ser susceptible a contraer y trasmitir enfermedades respiratorias, por lo que se deben tomar medidas de educación e intervenciones para la mejora del conocimiento/actitudes y la generación de prácticas adecuadas.
