ABSTRACT: The use of nitrogen (N) in pastoral ecosystems leads to increased productivity, as it allows the plant to elongate its leaves and, therefore, grazing herbivores harvest the green leaves. However, there are very volatile N sources, which can be replaced by ammonium nitrate, which is less volatile and less dependent on the application in rainy days. The treatments are compound of Marandu palisade grass pastures managed under continuous stocking at a canopy height of 25 cm, with different levels of N fertilizer: 0, 75, and 150 kg ha-1year-1, as ammonium nitrate (32% of N), with four replicates (pastures) in a completely randomized design. Nitrogen uptake (54.9, 96.5, 113.8 kg N ha-1) and N nutrition index (0.67, 0.98, 1.15) were different between N level, respectively, 0, 75 and 150 kg ha-1 year-1. The N recovery (58.3, 40.9 %) differed between 75 and 150 kg ha-1 year-1, respectively. The dose of 75 kg N kg ha-1 year-1 results in better N utilization, while the dose of 150 kg N ha-1 year-1 enables greater stocking rate; therefore, requiring less grazing area.

RESUMO: O uso de nitrogênio (N) em ecossistemas pastoris leva ao aumento da produtividade, pois permite que a planta alongue suas folhas e, portanto, os herbívoros colham as folhas verdes. Porém, existem fontes de nitrogênio muito voláteis, que devem ser substituídas por nitrato de amônio, que é menos volátil e menos dependente da aplicação em dias chuvosos. Os tratamentos foram compostos por pastagens de capim-marandu, manejadas sob lotação contínua, na altura do dossel a 25 cm, com diferentes doses de N: 0, 75 e 150 kg ha-1 ano-1, na forma de nitrato de amônio (32% de N), com quatro repetições (piquetes), em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. A absorção de nitrogênio (54,9; 96,5; 113,8 kg N ha-1) e o índice nutricional de N (0,67; 0,98; 1,15) foram diferentes entre as doses de N, respectivamente, 0, 75 e 150 kg ha-1 ano-1. A recuperação de N (58,3; 40,9%) diferiu entre 75 e 150 kg ha-1 ano-1, respectivamente. A dose de 75 kg N kg ha-1 ano-1 resultou em melhor aproveitamento do N, enquanto a dose de 150 kg N ha-1 ano-1 possibilita maior taxa de lotação; portanto, exigindo menos área de pastagem.

RESUMO: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a estrutura da vegetação e o desempenho de novilhas em recria e vacas de descarte em pastagens naturais manejadas em sistema de pastejo rotacionado com lotes “ponta” e “rapador” no período primavera-verão. Os tratamentos foram diferentes intervalos de descanso de 402 e 252 graus-dia (GD), os quais favorecem o crescimento de gramíneas de diferentes grupos funcionais. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso com dois tratamentos e três repetições. Os animais de teste foram 24 novilhas no grupo “ponta” e 24 vacas no grupo “rapador”. No estrato entre touceiras, as alturas do pasto maiores que 16 cm foram predominantes em ambos os tratamentos, sendo 1.3 vezes mais frequente no tratamento 402 GD em relação ao tratamento 252 GD. A taxa de lotação média foi 22% maior no tratamento com 252 GD. Embora não tenham sido observadas diferenças para o ganho médio diário de novilhas (0,227 kg.dia-1) e vacas (0,336 kg.dia-1) entre os tratamentos, o ganho de peso por área no período experimental foi maior no tratamento 252 GD. Apesar do sistema de manejo com lotes “ponta” e “rapador” não proporcionar mudanças significativas na estrutura da pastagem, ele permite atingir metas de desempenho satisfatórias em áreas de pastagens naturais.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the structure of vegetation and the performance of rearing heifers and cull cows in Campos grasslands managed in the rotational stocking method with first-last stocking in the spring-summer period. The treatments were different rest intervals of 402 and 252 degrees-day, which favor the growth of different functional groups of grasses. A completely randomized block design with two treatments and three repetitions was used. The test animals were 24 heifers in the “first” group and 24 cows in the “last” group. In the stratum between tussock grasses, sward heights greater than 0.16 m were predominant in both treatments, it was 1.3 times more frequent in the 402 DD treatment compared to the 252 DD treatment. Average stocking rate was 22% higher in the 252 DD treatment. Although, no differences were observed for the average daily gain of heifers (0.227 kg.day-1) and cows (0.336 kg.day-1) between treatments, the weight gain per area in the experimental period was greater in the 252 DD treatment. Despite the management system with first and last stoking does not provide significant changes in the structure of the pasture, it allowed to achieve satisfactory performance goals in areas of Campos grassland.

ABSTRACT High acidity and low soil P availability in the soils from the Pampa natural grasslands generally limit the forage growth and economic return. Thus, to increase the economic return and avoid environmental degradation and biodiversity loss due to replacement by intensive cropping systems, it is essential to improve the soil P availability. This study aimed to diagnose the nutritional status of the pluri-specific natural grasslands amended with different history of P sources. Additionally, we also try to indicate the most appropriate range of soil P availability for maximizing forage growth. The experiment started in 1997 in an area of Pampa natural grasslands in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The treatments evaluated the application of Gafsa hyperphosphate (HP) and triple superphosphate (SP) for four years (1997, 1998, 2002, and 2010). Soil and aboveground biomass sampling were performed five times from October 2010 to March 2011 to access aboveground biomass production, botanical composition, soil available P, and N and P nutrition index. Greater P availability in the soil amended with SP produced more forage and resulted in a higher P accumulation than in the soil amended with HP. The ideal range of soil P availability in the soils of natural grasslands ranged from 14 to 20 mg kg˗1, varying for different plant species. The species Paspalum plicatulum and Aristida laevis produce less aboveground biomass and accumulate less P in their tissue than Dichantelium sabulorum and Eustachys uliginosa, and P. notatum. Therefore, areas of natural grasslands dominated by D. sabulorum, E. uliginosa and P. notatum demand higher soil P availability to maintain high forage production. Soil P fertilization of pluri-specific natural grasslands in the Brazilian Pampa biome must consider the dominant forage species in the area and the soil P availability.

ABSTRACT South American natural grasslands are composed of several species with different growth strategies, with variations in specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), specific root length (SRL) and specific root area (SRA). The objective of this study was characterizing in grasses cultivated with different levels of phosphorus (P) in the soil if species with higher leaf and root area production per unit of dry matter have higher tissue P concentration, P use efficiency and higher dry matter yield. The plant species were grown in a greenhouse in pots with 5 kg of soil in a completely randomized design with four replicates and two conditions of P availability: addition of 60 mg kg-1 soil and without addition of P. The species with the highest SRA had a higher leaf and root P concentration. The higher production of leaf or root surface area per unit of dry matter did not represent higher tissue P use efficiency. The group formed by species of genre Paspalum had a higher leaf and root P use efficiency, therefore, areas composed of this genre are preferred for P fertilization.

RESUMO: O estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito de dois intervalos de descanso entre pastoreios nas características estruturais do pasto e desempenho de novilhas de corte em pastagens naturais manejadas em pastejo rotativo. Os tratamentos foram dois intervalos entre pastejos de 375 e 750 GD (graus dia), baseados na soma térmica da duração de elongação foliar média de gramíneas de grupos de captura e conservação dos recursos dominantes de uma pastagem natural. O experimento foi conduzido no período de outubro de 2015 a março de 2016, com duração de 151 dias e os períodos experimentais divididos em primavera e verão. Foram utilizadas 24 novilhas teste da raça Braford, com idade inicial na média de 12 meses, e de peso corporal médio de 220 kg (± 27,8). A Massa de forragem total (FMt) pré-pastejo foi em média de 3791 kgMSha-1 e não diferiu entre tratamentos e estação, o mesmo ocorreu com a FM de estrato não touceira. A taxa de lotação média foi de 469 kgha-1 em ambos os tratamentos. O ganho médio diário variou apenas entre estações, com médias de 0,102 kganimal-1dia-1 na primavera e 0,372 kganimal-1dia-1 no verão. O ganho por área durante os 151 dias de avaliação foi em média de 103 kgha-1. As pastagens naturais submetidas a intervalos de descanso entre pastoreios baseados na elongação foliar de gramíneas dominantes, independente do tratamento utilizado, proporcionam ritmos de ganhos médios diários compatíveis com a meta de peso corporal, a ser atingida aos 24 meses, para que as novilhas possam ser acasaladas.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two rest intervals between grazing on the structural characteristics of pasture and performance of beef heifers in Campos grassland under rotational grazing. The treatments were two intervals between 375 and 750 DD (degree-days) grazing, based on the cumulative thermal sum for leaf expansion of native grasses belonging to capture and conservation groups of resources dominant in a natural grassland. The experiment was conducted during 151 days from October 2015 to March 2016, and twenty-four Braford heifers tests mean age = 12 months; mean body weight = 220kg (± 27.8) were used. The pre-grazing total forage mass (FMt) was on average 3791 kgMSha-1 and did not differ between treatments and season, the same occurred with the non-tussock FM. The average stocking rate was 469 kg ha-1 in both treatments. The average daily gain varied only between seasons, 0.102 kg animal-1 day-1 during spring and 0.372 kg animal-1 day-1 during summer. During the 151 evaluation days, the gain per area was a 103 kgha-1. The use of rest intervals between grazing based on the leaf elongation of dominant grasses, when applied to the areas of Campos grasslands, provided nutritional conditions to reach the target body weight for breeding 24 months old beef heifers.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho e consumo de matéria seca de bezerras manejadas em pastoreio rotativo, com intervalos de pastoreio definidos por duas somas térmicas relacionadas à duração de elongação foliar de dois grupos funcionais de gramíneas durante a estação fria em pastagem natural. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos completamente casualizados, com dois tratamentos e três repetições de área na região central do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Os tratamentos foram duas somas térmicas: 375 e 750 graus-dias (GD), que determinaram os intervalos entre os pastoreios. Foram utilizadas trinta e seis bezerras de corte com idade média de 18 meses e peso corporal médio de 220±14kg. Durante todo o experimento, as bezerras receberam como suplemento grão de milho moído a uma taxa de 0,5% do peso corporal por dia, às 14:00 horas e tiveram livre acesso à suplementação proteínada (45% PB). Não houve diferença para o ganho médio diário, ganho de peso por área e consumo de matéria seca entre os tratamentos. A soma térmica como intervalo de descanso entre os pastoreios mostrou-se uma alternativa de manejo para aumentar a taxa de lotação.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance and feed intake of grazing beef heifers on two grazing intervals determined by thermal sum related to leaf elongation duration during cool season on natural grasslands. A complete randomized block design experiment with two treatments and three replications was conducted from May to September 2011 in the central part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The treatments were two thermal sums calculated at 375 and 750 degrees-days (DD) to determine the intervals between grazing periods in a rotational grazing system. Thirty six beef heifers with average age of 18 months old and (initial body weight = 220±14kg) were used, all heifers received ground corn supplement at a rate of 5g kg-1 of body weight per day, at 2p.m., throughout the experiment and had free access to mineral and protein supplementation (450g kg-1 of CP). Similar average daily gain (ADG), beef production gain (BPG) and feed intake (FI), were obtained in both treatments. Leaf elongation duration is an alternative grazing management tool for improved animal production and to increase animal stocking rate.

RESUMO: Áreas remanescentes de campo nativo do bioma Pampa têm apresentado dupla estrutura acentuada. A eficiência da pecuária sobre tais condições é dependente da adoção de práticas sincronizadas às peculiaridades naturais. Objetivou-se ampliar a compreensão da mudança da composição da vegetação e da massa de forragem, durante a estação de inverno, como efeito do manejo do pastejo em uma pastagem natural, de acentuada dupla estrutura pastejada por novilhas. A unidade experimental, situada no município de Bagé, Rio Grande do Sul, consiste em dois tratamentos (pastoreios contínuo e rotativo) e duas repetições. Os dados foram obtidos no início (7/6/2016) e fim do período experimental (7/10/2016), sendo estes: frequência da composição estrutural e do estrato inferior, massa de forragem deste estrato e peso dos animais. Os dados foram analisados com métodos multivariados, regressão linear e comparação de médias. A composição da estrutura e da massa de forragem se alterou no período. Axonopus affinis e Paspalum notatum representaram o pastoreio contínuo; e Mnesithea selloana e Axonopus argentinus o pastoreio rotativo, estando esta última espécie relacionada aos maiores níveis de massa de forragem. Na estação hibernal, os métodos de manejo interferiram na composição da massa de forragem sem interferir no desempenho positivo dos animais.

ABSTRACT: Remnant areas of Pampas grassland have a distinct double structure. Efficiency of livestock farming on these grasslands depends on practices that are synchronized with natural variation. This study examined the changes in vegetation composition and forage mass during winter to understand the effects of grazing methods in a natural pasture with a double structure that was grazed by heifers. An experimental area in the municipality of Bagé, Rio Grande do Sul, was subjected to continuous or rotational grazing treatments, with two replicates each. Frequency of the structural composition and forage mass of the lower stratum and animal weight was measured at the beginning and end of the experimental period (June 7 to October 7, 2016, respectively). Data were analysed with PCA ordination, regression and variance analysis. Both structural composition and forage mass changed during the experimental period. Axonopus affinis and Paspalum notatum were characteristic of continuous grazing, while Mnesithea selloana and Axonopus argentinus characterized rotational grazing (the latter had the highest levels of forage mass). Although, grazing methods changed the composition of forage mass in winter, they did not affect average daily gain of the animals.

Foram testados os efeitos de dois intervalos de descanso entre pastoreios, 375 e 750 graus-dia, baseado na soma térmica para a expansão foliar de gramíneas nativas de dois grupos funcionais sobre o comportamento ingestivo de novilhas de corte. O delineamento foi em blocos ao acaso, com dois tratamentos, três repetições de área e medidas repetidas no tempo. Foram realizadas três avaliações (nov/11, jan e mar/12), com 24h cada, utilizando novilhas de corte com 12 meses. Estimou-se o consumo de forragem com marcador externo (Cr2O3). A massa de lâminas foliares foi semelhante entre os tratamentos, apresentando média de 1261kg MS ha-1. O tempo médio dispendido pelos animais em pastejo foi de 627,4 minutos e a taxa de bocados média foi de 37,1 bocados minuto-1. O número médio de refeições foi de 5,9 refeições dia-1, com uma média de 118,5 minutos por refeição. Os animais visitaram, em média, 6,1 estações alimentares por minuto e permaneceram nessas estações por 12 segundos. Houve diferença no tempo de pastejo e taxa de bocado nos períodos, com uma redução ao longo do tempo. Os intervalos de descanso testados provaram ter pouco efeito no comportamento ingestivo e no consumo de forragem das novilhas

It was evaluated the effect of two rest intervals between grazing occupations in rotational grazing; 375 and 750 DD (degree-days); based on the cumulative thermal sum necessary for leaf expansion of native grasses of two functional groups over the grazing behavior variables from beef heifers with 12 months old. The experiment was conducted as a completely randomized block design, with two treatments, three replications and measures repeated over time. Grazing behavior was assessed in three occasions (Nov 2011, Jan and Mar 2012), with 24h each. The herbage intake was estimated using an external marker (Cr2O3). The leaf mass was similar among the rest intervals, with a mean of 1261kg DM ha-1. The average grazing time was 627.4min day-1 and bite rate was 37.1 bites min-1. The average number of daily meals was 5.9 with an average of 118.5 minutes. Number of feeding stations visited per minute was 6.1 and the feeding stations permanence time was of 12 seconds. There was a reduction only on grazing time and bite rate over the periods. The range of thermal sums evaluated to define the rest intervals in rotational grazing proved no effect on heifers' grazing behavior and herbage intake

O objetivo foi avaliar o desempenho de novilhas de corte em pastagem natural sob pastoreio contínuo e rotativo no outono-inverno. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, conduzidos utilizando a massa de forragem acima de oito cm e 50% da massa de lâminas foliares das touceiras. Os animais foram novilhas Brangus com peso médio inicial de 258kg. As variáveis avaliadas foram massa de forragem disponibilizada (MFd), massa de lâminas foliares das touceiras (MLFt) oferta de forragem disponibilizada (OFd), altura do estrato inferior (Hinf), proteína bruta (PB), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), digestibilidade da matéria orgânica (DISMO), nutrientes digestíveis totais (NDT), ganho médio diário (GMD), escore de condição corporal (CC), escore do trato reprodutivo (ETR) e taxa de lotação (TL). MFd, Hinf, DISMO e NDT foram decrescentes e OFd, PB e FDN semelhantes ao longo do período experimental. O GMD foi positivo apenas no terceiro período, enquanto que CC, ETR e TL decresceram. O manejo da pastagem natural sob pastoreio contínuo ou rotativo, no outono-inverno, utilizando a massa de forragem acima de oito cm e 50% da massa de lâminas foliares das touceiras, não possibilita o desenvolvimento corporal adequado para acasalamento de novilhas de corte aos 24 meses.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of beef heifers in natural grassland under continuous and rotational grazing during the autumn-winter period. The treatments were distributed in a completely randomized design and conducted using the forage mass above eight cm and 50% of the leaf blades mass of tussocks. The animals were Brangus beef heifers with initial body weight of 258kg. The variables evaluated were available forage mass (FMa), leaf blades mass of tussocks (LBMt), real forage allowance (FAr), sward height of the lower stratum (HLS), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), organic matter digestibility (OMD), total digestible nutrients (TDN), average daily gain (ADG), body condition score (BCS), reproductive tract score (RTS) and stocking rate (SR). FMa, HLS, OMD and TDN decreased while FAr, CP and NDF were similar during the experimental period. The ADG was positive only at third experimental period while BCS, RTS and SR decreased over time. The natural grassland management under continuous and rotational grazing during the autumn-winter period, using the forage mass above 8cm and 50% of the leaf blades mass of tussocks, does not allow the adequate corporal development for breeding the beef heifers at 24 months old.

A maioria das pastagens naturais no bioma Campos no sul do Brasil cresce em solos com baixa disponibilidade de fósforo (P), mas com altos teores de P total e de P orgânico. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar as alterações nas formas de P no solo, ao longo de um ciclo de crescimento de pastagens naturais, decorrentes da aplicação de fontes de fosfato. Em três experimentos instalados em áreas de pastagem natural, foi aplicado P nas formas de hiperfosfato de Gafsa, superfosfato triplo e testemunha, arranjados em blocos casualizados com três repetições. Nos experimentos instalados no município de Candiota, RS, em pastagens naturais sob Luvissolo Úmbrico e Neossolo Litólico, foram aplicados 100 kg ha-1 de P2O5 em setembro de 2010. Na pastagem sob Argissolo Vermelho no município de Santa Maria, RS, foram aplicados 180, 90, 100 e 100 kg ha-1 de P2O5 nos anos de 1997, 1998, 2002 e 2010, respectivamente. Amostras de solo foram coletadas (0-10 cm) ao longo da estação de crescimento da pastagem (0, 55, 116, 171 e 232 dias, após aplicação do fosfato em Candiota; e 0, 50, 83, 129, 159 e 186 dias, após aplicação do fosfato em Santa Maria). Foram analisados os teores de P disponível por resina de troca aniônica, o P imobilizado na biomassa microbiana do solo, o P extraído por NaOH 0,1 mol L-1, o P orgânico total e o P total. Os teores de P disponível aumentaram rapidamente com a aplicação de fosfato solúvel, mas no final do período de avaliação esses se equivaleram ao do fosfato natural, que foi semelhante à testemunha. A aplicação de fertilizantes fosfatados sob pastagens naturais com baixa disponibilidade de P aumentou a importância das frações inorgânicas lábeis às plantas, tornando-as menos dependentes da mineralização das frações orgânicas. As frações orgânicas, inclusive o P microbiano, não são bons indicadores da biodisponibilidade de P em pastagens naturais sob Argissolos, Neossolos e Luvissolos do sul do Brasil fertilizadas com fosfatos.

Most natural pastures in the Campos biome in Southern Brazil grow in soils with low phosphorus (P) availability, but with high contents of total and organic P. The present study aimed to evaluate the changes in forms of soil P resulting from the application of phosphate sources over a growth cycle of natural pastures. In three experiments under natural pasture, P was applied in the form of Gafsa rock phosphate, triple superphosphate, and a control treatment in a randomized block design with three replications. In the trials carried out in natural pastures in the municipality of Candiota (RS) in an Alfisol and an Entisol, 100 kg ha-1 of P2O5 was applied in September 2010. In natural pasture in an Ultisol in the municipality of Santa Maria (RS), 180, 90, 100, and 100 kg ha-1 of P2O5 were applied in the years 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2010, respectively. Soil samples were collected (0-10 cm) throughout the natural grassland growing season (0, 55, 116, 171, and 232 days after P application at Candiota and 0, 50, 83, 129, 159, and 186 days after application of phosphate at Santa Maria). The levels of available P were analyzed by anion exchange resin, as well as P immobilized in the soil microbial biomass, P extracted by 0.1 mol L-1 NaOH, total organic P, and total P. The available P content increased rapidly with the application of soluble phosphate, but at the end of the evaluation period it was equivalent to the Gafsa rock phosphate, which was similar to the control. The application of phosphate fertilizers on natural pastures with low P availability increased the importance of the labile inorganic P forms to the plants, making them less dependent on the mineralization of organic P fractions. The organic fractions, including microbial P, are not good indicators of the bioavailability of P in natural pastures under Alfisols, Entisols, and Ultisols in Southern Brazil fertilized with phosphates.

O uso de inoculantes na cultura do milho tem sido cada vez mais valorizado, em vista dos benefícios que pode trazer à cultura, como a fixação biológica do nitrogênio e o aumento da quantidade de raízes. Isto pode melhorar a absorção de água e nutrientes pela planta, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento do milho, principalmente em períodos de seca. Este estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar, em condições de campo, as características agronômicas e o rendimento de grãos de híbridos de milho, inoculados, ou não, com uma mistura de três espécies de Azospirillum (A. brasilense, A. lipoferum, A. oryzae). Foram avaliados o teor relativo de clorofila nas folhas, a altura de planta, a senescência foliar, os componentes de rendimento de grãos, o teor de N, a matéria seca da parte aérea das plantas e o número mais provável de bactérias diazotróficas na rizosfera das plantas. A inoculação manteve o teor de clorofila significativamente maior até o estádio R3 das plantas, para os três híbridos testados, aumentou o rendimento da matéria seca da parte aérea, dos híbridos AS 1575 e SHS 5050, o peso de 1000 grãos, para o híbrido P32R48 e altura, para o AS 1575. Houve interação entre os genótipos de milho e as bactérias inoculadas, visto que, cada híbrido testado respondeu de forma diferente à inoculação. A inoculação de Azospirillum em milho demonstrou estimular o desenvolvimento das plantas no período vegetativo, aumentando a probabilidade de obter-se um estande de plantas uniforme, maior resistência ao estresse e maior concentração de clorofila nas folhas.

The use of inoculants in maize crops has been increasing due to benefits that it brings to the plants such as nitrogen biological fixation and increase in root growth. This can lead to better water and nutrient absorption by the plants, contributing to the plant development, mainly in dry weather periods. This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic features of maize hybrids inoculated with a mixture of three species of Azospirillum (A. brasilense, A. lipoferum, A. oryzae), under field conditions. The relative leaf chlorophyll content, plant height and leaf senescence were evaluated during the maize cycle. After harvest, the components of grain yield, N content and dry mass of the leaves, and the most probable number of N fixers in the rhizosphere of the plants were analyzed. The inoculation increased the chlorophyll content in the maize leaves until the R3 stage, for the three hybrids tested. It also increased the dry mass of shoots of the hybrids AS 1575 and SHS 5050; the 1,000 grain weight of the hybrid P32R48; and height of AS 1575. It was found an interaction between maize genotypes and inoculated bacteria, since each hybrid tested responded differently to the inoculation. The inoculation of Azospirillum on maize promotes the development of plants in the growing season, increases the probability of obtaining a uniform plant stand, better resistance to stress and better concentration of chlorophyll in the leaves.

O trabalho objetivou determinar a influência de intervalos de pastoreio rotativo sobre a morfogênese de cinco gramíneas nativas da região central do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), agrupadas segundo uma tipologia funcional, nas estações de primavera e verão. Foram avaliadas taxa de aparecimento, elongação e senescência foliares (TAF/TEF/TSF), filocrono e duração de vida e de elongação foliares (DVF/DEF) em Axonopus affinis, Aristida laevis, Andropogon lateralis, Paspalum notatum e Paspalum plicatulum, sob dois intervalos de pastoreio rotativo, definidos por somas térmicas (°C), 375 e 750 graus-dia, na primavera 2010 e verão 2010/2011. Não houve diferença significativa entre intervalos de pastoreio, mas houve entre espécies e entre estações. Paspalum notatum se destacou por apresentar adaptações bem marcadas ao pastejo. Axonopus affinis e P. notatum foram as espécies com maiores TAF e menores DVF, já A. lateralis apresentou características morfogênicas que contradizem a literatura. Quanto às estações, primavera se caracterizou como a estação de crescimento, e verão, como o início do florescimento. Pastejo afeta a morfogênese de forrageiras, no entanto, os intervalos de pastoreio usados não têm efeito sobre o desenvolvimento das espécies e a influência estacional é marcante no desenvolvimento dessas gramíneas.

The influence of rotational grazing intervals on morphogenesis of five native grasses from Rio Grande do Sul state (RS) central region, grouped according to a functional typology, was evaluated during spring and summer seasons. Leaf appearance rate, leaf elongation rate and leaf senescence rate (LAR/LER/LSR) phyllochron, leaf lifespan and leaf elongation duration (LLP/LED) were evaluated on Axonopus affinis, Aristida laevis, Andropogon lateralis, Paspalum notatum and Paspalum plicatulum, under two rotational grazing intervals, defined by thermal time (°C), 375 and 750 degree-day, during 2010 spring and 2010/2011 summer. There was no significant difference between grazing intervals, but there was among species and between seasons. Paspalum notatum highlights significant adjustments to grazing. Axonopus affinis and P. notatum presented the largest LAR and smallest LLP, while A. lateralis presented morphogenic characteristics which contradict literature. Spring and summer was characterized as the growing and flowering periods, respectively. Grazing showed influence on forage morphogenesis, however, the evaluated grazing intervals had no effect on species development and the seasonal influence define native grasses development.

Características morfogênicas e estruturais de azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) foram avaliadas sob pastejo de borregas, em diferentes massas de forragem (MF): "Alta", "Média" e "Baixa", correspondentes a 1800-2000; 1400-1600 e 1000-1200kg ha-1 de matéria seca (MS), respectivamente. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com três tratamentos e duas repetições de área. O método de pastejo foi de lotação contínua, com número variável de animais. Os dados foram submetidos a análises de correlação e regressão polinomial. A altura do pseudocolmo, o comprimento de lâminas intactas e desfolhadas e o número de folhas em senescência de azevém aumentaram linearmente com a elevação dos valores das massas de forragem. O número de folhas verdes ajustou-se ao modelo de regressão quadrático; o número de folhas em expansão e a densidade populacional de perfilhos não se ajustaram a nenhum modelo de regressão. Em pastagem de azevém, o manejo com massas de forragem dentro da faixa compreendida entre 1.100 e 1.800kg ha-1de MS não provoca alterações nas características morfogênicas dessa gramínea, mas causa diferenças nas características estruturais do dossel. Quando o azevém é manejado com 1.460kg ha-1de MS, seus perfilhos mantêm maior número de folhas verdes e com 1.800kg ha-1 de MS existe maior número de lâminas foliares em senescência e com maior comprimento.

Morphogenetic and structural characteristics of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), utilized by female lambs and managed with different forage masses (FM) were studied. The experimental design was completely randomized, with two area replications and three treatments, consisting of forage masses: "High", "Mean" and "Low", corresponding to 1,800-2,000; 1,400-1,600 and 1,000-1,200kg ha-1 of dry matter (DM), respectively. The grazing method was continuous with variable stocking rate. Data were subjected to correlation analysis and polynomial regression. Pseudo stem's height and length of the intact and defoliated leaf blades and number of senescent leaves of Italian ryegrass increased linearly with the increase of forage mass. Number of green leaves was adjusted to the quadratic regression model, number of leaves in elongation and tiller population density did not adjust to any regression model. Management of Italian ryegrass with forage masses between 1,100 and 1,800kg ha-1of DM did not cause changes in its morphogenetic characteristics, but causes differences in the structural characteristics of the canopy. When managed with 1,460kg ha-1of DM, tillers of Italian ryegrass maintain greater number of green leaves. Meanwhile, when managed with 1,800kg ha-1of DM it has a higher number of leaf blades in senescence, and leaves with greater length.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar, no outono, as características morfogênicas de oito gramíneas nativas da região central do Rio Grande do Sul, classificadas sob uma tipologia funcional, segundo o teor de matéria seca e a área foliar específica em A, B, C, D: Axonopus affinis (A), Andropogon lateralis (B), Paspalum notatum (B), Paspalum plicatulum (C), Piptochaetium montevidense (C) Aristida laevis (D), Saccharum angustifolius (D) e Sorghastrum pellitum (D); submetidas a dois níveis de nitrogênio (zero e 200kg ha-1 de N). O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com arranjo fatorial 8 (espécies) x 2 (níveis de N) ou 4 (tipos funcionais) x 2 (níveis de N), ambos com três repetições. As plantas foram submetidas a cortes segundo diferentes durações de elongação foliar, definidas por médias das espécies por tipo funcional. As variáveis foram analisadas estatisticamente usando testes de aleatorização com o software MULTIV. Não houve diferença significativa entre os níveis de N, porém houve entre as espécies e entre os tipos funcionais. As variáveis morfogênicas são coerentes com a tipologia funcional utilizada como referência, baseada em atributos foliares. Os níveis de nitrogênio não alteram a morfogênese das espécies na estação do outono, sendo seu uso desaconselhado nesse período.

The morphogenetic characteristics of eight native grasses of South Brazil were evaluated during autumn. They were classified in a functional typology, according to dry matter content and specific leaf area (A, B, C, D): Axonopus affinis (A), Andropogon lateralis (B), Paspalum notatum (B), Paspalum plicatulum (C), Piptochaetium montevidense (C) Aristida laevis (D), Saccharum angustifolius (D) and Sorghastrum pellitum (D), under two nitrogen (N) fertilization levels (zero and 200kg ha-1 N). Experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial arrangement: eight (species) x two (N levels) with three replicates or four (functional types) x two (N levels) both with three replicates. Plants were submitted to cuts according to different leaf lamina elongation, defined by means of species classified by functional type. The variables were statistically analyzed using randomization tests with software MULTIV. There was no significant difference between N levels, but there was among species and among functional types. Morphogenic variables are consistent according to the functional typology used as reference, based on leaf traits. Nitrogen fertilization does not change morphogenetic characteristics of evaluated species during autumn, and its use is discouraged during this season.

Visando a avaliar o valor nutritivo e a consistência da classificação em tipos funcionais, foram utilizados os indicadores proteína bruta e digestibilidade in vitro de lâminas foliares de algumas das principais gramíneas nativas do centro do RS. As espécies foram avaliadas sob manejos de queima e pastejo: área excluída de pastejo não queimada (ENQ), área excluída de pastejo queimada (EQ), área pastejada não queimada (PNQ) e área pastejada queimada (PQ), no período entre setembro/2007 e maio/2008 em área experimental da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. A proteína bruta variou de 4,5 a 10,7% e a digestibilidade apresentou maior variação, entre 37 a 69%. O pastejo afetou positivamente o teor de proteína bruta das espécies (7,9% em área pastejada contra 5,6% em área excluída). O uso do fogo promoveu aumento na digestibilidade média das gramíneas (50,5% em área queimada e 46,6% em área não queimada). Os indicadores proteína bruta e digestibilidade permitiram a manutenção da tipologia funcional baseada nos atributos foliares, teor de matéria seca e área foliar específica, pelos quais as espécies foram classificadas. Os distúrbios, pastejo e queima, afetam o valor nutricional das lâminas foliares de diversas gramíneas nativas. O pastejo aumenta principalmente os teores de proteína bruta e o fogo promove maior digestibilidade.

Aiming to determinate the nutritive value and functional types classification consistency, crude protein and in vitro digestibility analysis were performed in leaf blades of the most frequent native grasses, in central RS. Species were evaluated under fire and grazing regimes: unburned and grazing excluded area (UE), burned and grazing excluded area (BE), unburned and grazed area (UG), burned and grazed area (BG) between 2007/September and 2008/May at Universidade Federal de Santa Maria experimental area. Crude protein ranged from 4.5 to 10.7% and digestibility showed greater variation, from 37 to 69%. Grazing affected positively crude protein in all species (7.9% in grazed area and 5.6% inexcluded area). Fire use promoted increase in grasses average digestibility (50.5% in burned area and 46.6% in unburned area). Crude protein and digestibility confirmed functional typology based in leaf traits, dry matter content and specific leaf area, based on which species are classified. Disturbances, grazing and fire, affect leaf blade nutritive value of several native grasses. Grazing increase mainly crude protein and fire increase digestibility.
