ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to identify and evaluate the cases of scabies caused by Sarcoptes scabiei and endoparasites in wild and captive vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) from the Cusco Region, Peru. Scrapings of skin lesions were made and faecal samples were taken during the capture of vicuñas during the chaccus. The frequency of S. scabiei was 1.9% (54/2826), being 6.1% (48/777) in the wild and 0.2% (6/2049) in captivity. Likewise, F. hepatica (2.0%), Strongylus type eggs (42.1%), Nematodirus sp (6.8%), N. spathiger (26.5%), Trichuris sp (4.0%), Eimeria spp (85.0%), and Moniezia spp (2.7%) were found in a sample of 147 animals, being most cases monoparasitism.

RESUMEN El objetivo del presente estudio fue identificar y evaluar los casos de sarna causada por Sarcoptes scabiei y de endoparásitos en vicuñas silvestres y en cautiverio (Vicugna vicugna) de la Región Cusco, Perú. Se realizaron raspados de lesiones en piel y se tomaron muestras fecales durante la captura de vicuñas durante los chaccus. La frecuencia de S. scabiei fue de 1.9% (54/2826), siendo de 6.1% (48/777) en silvestría y de 0.2% (6/ 2049) en cautiverio. Asimismo, se identificaron a F. hepatica (2.0%), huevos tipo Strongylus (42.1%), Nematodirus sp (6.8%), N. spathiger (26.5%), Trichuris sp (4.0%), Eimeria spp (85.0%), y Moniezia spp (2.7%) en una muestra de 147 animales, siendo la mayor parte casos de monoparasitismo.

Severe dengue pathogenesis is not fully understood, but high levels of proinflammatory cytokines have been associated with dengue disease severity. In this study, the cytokine levels in 171 sera from Mexican patients with primary dengue fever (DF) and dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) from dengue virus (DENV) 1 (n = 116) or 2 (n = 55) were compared. DF and DHF were defined according to the patient’s clinical condition, the primary infections as indicated by IgG enzymatic immunoassay negative results, and the infecting serotype as assessed by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Samples were analysed for circulating levels of interleukin (IL)-12p70, interferon (IFN)-γ, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-6, and IL-8 using a commercial cytometric bead array. Significantly higher IFN-γ levels were found in patients with DHF than those with DF. However, significantly higher IL-12p70, TNF-α, and IL-6 levels were associated with DHF only in patients who were infected with DENV2 but not with DENV1. Moreover, patients with DF who were infected with DENV1 showed higher levels of IL-12p70, TNF-α, and IL-6 than patients with DHF early after-fever onset. The IL-8 levels were similar in all cases regardless of the clinical condition or infection serotype. These results suggest that the association between high proinflammatory cytokine levels and dengue disease severity does not always stand, and it once again highlights the complex nature of DHF pathogenesis.

El objetivo del artículo es determinar el comportamiento de la estrategia de selección de portafolios que asigna una ponderación a cada activo inversamente proporcional al riesgo individual del mismo (PIR) y compararla con las estrategias clásicas de mediavarianza (M-V), mínima varianza (MINVAR) y estrategia equiponderada (1/N). Para ello se realizan estimaciones out of sample y se dan condiciones bajo las cuales la PIR conduce a ponderaciones menos riesgosas que la estrategia 1/N para el mercado de valores de Colombia. Como conclusión, se encuentra evidencia del mejor desempeño de la PIR con respecto a las estrategias clásicas en términos de los indicadores de rentabilidad, riesgo, ratio de Sharpe, Turnover (costos) y Turnover (estabilidad).

This article analyzes the behavior of the portfolio selection strategy that assigns to each asset a weight inversely proportional to individual risk (PIR) in comparison with the classical mean-variance (MV), minimum variance (MINVAR) and 1/N strategies. In doing so and applied to the Colombian stock market, this study performs out-of-sample estimates and provides conditions under which PIR weights lead to less riskier strategies than the 1/N strategy. In conclusion, the evidence suggests that the PIR strategy outperforms classical strategies in terms of profitability indicators, risk, Sharpe ratio, Turnover (cost) and Turnover (stability).

L'objectif de l'article est de déterminer le comportement de la stratégie de sélection de portefeuilles selon laquelle chaque actif reçoit une pondération inversement proportionnelle du risque (PIR). Celle-ci est ensuite comparée avec les stratégies classiques : moyenne-variance (MV), variance minimale (MINVAR) et stratégie équipondérée (1/N). Pour ce faire, nous faisons des estimations du type out of sample en se donnant les conditions sous lesquelles la PIR conduit à des pondérations moins risquées que la stratégie (1/N). On trouve pour le marché financier colombien que la meilleure performance de la PIR est associée aux stratégies classiques en ce qui concerne les indicateurs de rentabilité, le risque, le rapport de Sharpe, Turnover (coûts) et Turnover (stabilité).

The hantaviruses are a group of emerging rodent-borne pathogens (family Bunyaviridae; Genus Hantavirus) that are etiologic agents for hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Europe and Asia and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Americas. HFRS is associated with rodents of the family Muridae, subfamilies Murinae and Arvicolinae; HPS is associated with rodents of the subfamily Sigmodontinae. Since the identification of HCPS in USA in 1993, a large number of cases of HPS and an increasing number of hantaviruses and rodent reservoir hosts have been identified in Central and South America. Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated important differences in frequency of infection with hantaviruses in both human and rodent host populations. Antibody prevalences in rodent and human populations may vary from less than 1% to more than 40%. Currently, more than 1500 cases of HCPS have been reported and more than 15 genetically distinct variants of hantaviruses, all associated with sigmodontine rodents, have been identified throughout the Americas. Several characteristics distinguish Latin American HCPS cases from the classical HCPS described for the first time in the USA. These include a variation in severity of disease from moderate and self-limiting to severe, the demonstration of person-to-person transmission, and a somewhat higher incidence of extrapulmonary clinical manifestations in the South American form of HCPS. Nevertheless, our understanding of hantaviruses in the Americas is still far from complete. The factors involved in the dynamics of these viruses in nature, their establishment and transmission within host populations and from hosts to humans, and the variable pathology of these viruses in humans are complex. It is likely that more hantaviruses will be described in the future, and much more data will be required in order to describe the diversity and evolution of this group of pathogens. Latin America, as the center of diversity for Sigmodontine rodents and their hantaviruses is presented with the unique opportunity as well as the challenge of being center stage for continued studies of the dynamics of hantaviruses in natural host populations and the links of host and virus to human populations.

Los hantavirus son un grupo de patógenos emergentes (familia Bunyaviridae; género Hantavirus) identificados como agentes etiológicos de la Fiebre Hemorrágica con Síndrome Renal (FHSR) en Europa y Asia y el Síndrome Cardiopulmonar por Hantavirus (SCPH) en las Américas. La FHSR está relacionada con roedores de las subfamilias Murinae y Arvicolinae y el SCPH con roedores de las subfamilias Sigmodontinae y Arvicolinae. Desde la identificación del SCPH en los EE.UU. en 1993, muchos casos de SCPH y un número cada vez mayor de hantavirus y sus roedores reservorios han sido identificados en Centro y Sud América. Estudios epidemiológicos han demostrado diferencias notables en las seroprevalencias de anticuerpos en humanos y roedores reservorios que oscilan entre el 1% y más del 40%. Hasta ahora han sido notificados en toda América más de 1500 casos de SCPH y aproximadamente más de 15 variantes de hantavirus genética y serológicamente distintos asociados a roedores sigmodontinos. Las formas clínicas leves-autolimitadas, moderadas y graves de la enfermedad, los antecedentes de transmisión persona a persona y una incidencia mayor de manifestaciones clínicas extrapulmonares que se diferencian de la enfermedad clásica descrita por primera vez en EE.UU., son aspectos importantes sobre la epidemiología de los hantavirus y el SCPH en Latinoamérica; sin embargo, la historia completa de los hantavirus está aún por escribirse, debido a la naturaleza dinámica de estos virus y sus patologías, y a la complejidad de los factores que intervienen en su aparición, establecimiento y diseminación en poblaciones humanas y animales. Latinoamérica continúa representando la porción del continente con una oportunidad única y desafiante para el estudio de la relación de los hantavirus con sus huéspedes reservorios naturales y las interacciones virus-roedor-humano. Probablemente más hantavirus podrían ser descritos en el futuro, y serían necesarios más datos para entender su diversidad y evolución.

OBJECTIVE: Determining Hantavirus infection prevalence in rodents in the Córdoba department, Colombia. METHODS: Rodents were captured using Sherman live-capture traps (8x9x23 cm; Sherman Traps, Inc., Tallahassee, FL) in peridomestic areas of Córdoba. Hantavirus IgG antibodies were detected by ELISA using Sin Nombre virus (SNV) recombinant nucleocapsid antigen (CDC, Atlanta, Georgia, USA). RESULTS: 336 rodents were captured in 11 townships in the Córdoba department (Murinae: 249; Sigmodontinae: 68; Heteromyidae: 17; Echimyidae: 2; 8,5 % overall trap success) during 79 nights of trapping between January 2003 and November 2004. Hantavirus antibody seroprevalence was 2,1 % (7 out of 336 captures). Prevalence by genus varied between 5,9 % (1 out of 17 Heteromys) to 50 % (1 out of 2 Proechimys). CONCLUSIONS: SNV-reactive antibody prevalence in rodents in Córdoba, Colombia, indicated that at least one hantavirus is endemic in rodents in northern Colombia and is frequently transmitted to rural residents.

METODOLOGIA: Captura de roedores con trampas tipo Sherman live-capture traps (8x9x23 cm; Sherman Traps, Inc., Tallahassee, FL) en áreas domésticas y peridomésticas en el departamento de Córdoba. Analisis de anticuerpos IgG por ELISA, empleando como antígeno una proteína recombinante de la nucleocapside del Sin Nombre Virus (SNV) (CDC, Atlanta, Georgia, USA). RESULTADOS: Durante los meses de enero de 2003 a noviembre de 2004, en 79 noches de trampeo fueron capturados 336 roedores en once municipios del departamento de Córdoba (Murinae: 249; Sigmodontinae: 68; Heteromyidae: 17; Echimyidae: 2) (éxito de captura del 8,5 %). La seroprevalencia de anticuerpos contra hantavirus fue del 2,1 % (7 de 336 capturas). Los porcentajes de seropositividad específicos por género oscilaron entre 5,9 % (1 de 17, Heteromys) a 50 % (1 de 2, Proechimys). CONCLUSIONES: La prevalencia de anticuerpos contra el SNV en roedores de Córdoba, Colombia; indica que al menos un hantavirus es endémico en roedores del norte colombiano y esta frecuentemente trasmitido a residentes rurales.
