RESUMO: O colostro é uma das principais fontes de imunoglobulinas para leitões neonatos e vários estudos têm demonstrado que a quantidade ingerida pelo leitão tem influência na sua condição imunológica, bem como no seu desempenho futuro. O trabalho teve como objetivo correlacionar o consumo de colostro com a concentração sérica de imunoglobulinas nas primeiras 24 horas, determinada pelo imunócrito (IR), determinar se a ordem de nascimento interfere no consumo de colostro e IR, e o desempenho de ganho de peso até os 42 dias de vida do leitão. Foram utilizados 103 leitões categorizados em dois grupos conforme consumo de colostro nas primeiras 24 horas de vida em (230g e <230g. Leitões que ingeriram (230g de colostro ao nascimento apresentaram peso médio de 1,412±0,156 kg (média±EPM), enquanto que animais que tiveram um consumo de colostro <230g o peso foi 1,317±0,162 kg (P>0,05). O IR médio entre os grupos de ingestão de colostro foi de 0,075 (<230g) e 0,096 ((230g) de colostro (P<0,05). O IR diferiu entre os grupos de ordem de nascimento dos leitões, onde o grupo de leitões nascidos, até ≤7, apresentaram IR 0,096, enquanto os nascidos, a partir >7, apresentaram IR 0,079 (p<0,05). Leitões que consumiram mais colostro ((230 g) nas primeiras 24 horas de vida tiveram um maior imunócrito e maior ganho de peso dos 7 aos 42 dias de vida (p<0,05). Conclui-se que a ordem de nascimento não prejudica o consumo de colostro, porém a taxa de IR possui uma correlação negativa (CORR= -0,3101; p<0,05) em relação à ordem de nascimento. Leitões que consomem uma quantidade superior a 230 g de colostro apresentam maior ganho de peso até os 42 dias de vida.

ABSTRACT: Colostrum is the main source of immunoglobulins for piglets and several studies have shown that colostrum intake by piglets have a significant influence on their immunity as well as their future performance. The aim of this study was to ascertain the correlation between colostrum intake in the first 24 hours and the serum immunoglobulin concentration determined by immunocrit (IR), determine if the birth order of piglets interfered in colostrum intake and the IR, and measure their weight gain up to 42 days of age. One hundred and three piglets were included in the study and divided into two groups according to colostrum intake in the first 24 hours: > 230 g and <230 g. Piglets with an intake of (230 g colostrum at birth had a mean weight of 1.412 ± 0.156 kg (mean ± SEM) while animals with a colostrum intake <230 g weighed 1.317 ± 0.162 kg (P>0.05). The mean IR between colostrum intake groups was 0.075 (<230 g) and 0.096 ((230 g) (p<0.05). The IR differed between the order of birth of the piglets; where piglets born up to ≤7 had an IR=0.096 while those born from >7 presented with an IR=0.079 (p<0.05). Piglets that consumed more colostrum (>230 g) in the first 24 hours after birth had a greater immunocrit and greater weight gain from 7 to 42 days of age (p<0.05). We concluded that the order of birth does not affect the colostrum intake, but the IR has a negative correlation (CORR= -0.3101; p<0,05) with the order of birth. Piglets with intake of more than 230 g of colostrum show greater weight gain up to 42 days of age.

RESUMO: Os objetivos foram avaliar os efeitos das estações e latitude na contagem de carrapatos e determinar o melhor modelo para estimar parâmetros genéticos para contagem de carrapatos e pelame. Foram utilizados registros de animais expostos naturalmente a carrapatos em fazendas em vários estados brasileiros e no Paraguai. A ANOVA foi utilizada para verificar os efeitos das estações e da latitude na característica de contagem de carrapatos. A primavera foi a estação com a maior média, seguida pelo verão e outono, que não mostraram diferenças entre eles. O inverno apresentou os menores valores médios. A latitude -11° teve o maior valor médio seguido pela latitude -18°. A abordagem bayesiana foi usada para avaliar a contagem de carrapatos e o pelame e identificar o modelo adequado para estimar parâmetros genéticos e para uso em avaliações genéticas. Os dados foram analisados usando um modelo animal com quatro especificações diferentes para efeitos “fixos”. A inferência foi baseada em uma cadeia de Markov Monte Carlo (MCMC). Os critérios de seleção do modelo bayesiano indicaram que o modelo M1, que considerou a composição racial no grupo contemporâneo, foi superior aos demais modelos, tanto na contagem de carrapatos e para pelame. As estimativas de herdabilidade para contagem de carrapatos e pelame obtidas usando o modelo M1 foram de 0,14 e 0,22, respectivamente. As correlações de ranking entre os modelos para a contagem de carrapatos e pelame foram estimadas e a reordenação foi verificada para a contagem de carrapatos. A correlação genética estimada entre a contagem de carrapatos e pelame foi negativa (-0,12). Esses achados sugerem que genes diferentes regulam a contagem de carrapatos e pelame.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effects of seasons and latitude on tick counting and determined the best model to estimate genetic parameters for tick count and hair coat. Records of animals naturally exposed to ticks on farms in several Brazilian states and in Paraguay were used. The ANOVA was used to verify the effects of seasons and latitude on the tick count trait. Spring was the season with the highest average, followed by summer and autumn, which showed no differences between them. The winter presented the lowest average values. Latitude -11° had the highest mean value followed by latitude -18°. The Bayesian approach was used to evaluate tick count and hair coat and to identify a suitable model for estimating genetic parameters for use in genetic evaluations. The data were analyzed using an animal model with four different specifications for “fixed” purposes. The inference was based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). The criteria for selection of the Bayesian model indicated that the M1 model, which considered the breed composition in the contemporary group, was superior to the other models, both for tick count and hair coat. Heritability estimates for tick count and hair coat obtained using the M1 model were 0.14 and 0.22, respectively. The rank correlations between the models for tick count and hair coat were estimated and reordering was verified for tick count. The estimated genetic correlation between tick count and hair coat traits was negative (-0.12). These findings suggest that different genes regulate tick count and hair coat.

RESUMO: O objetivo neste trabalho foi identificar o modelo animal que melhor descreve a variação genética e residual para a característica contagem de carrapatos ao sobreano, em uma população multirracial Angus-Nelore constituída por 6.951 animais, filhos de 382 touros e 6.198 vacas. Os valores genéticos foram preditos a partir da metodologia de inferência Bayesiana utilizando os seguintes modelos: Animal Tradicional, Animal Multirracial sem e com segregação, considerando as variâncias residuais homo ou heterocedástica. Os critérios de escolha foram o Número de Parâmetros, a Informação de Deviance e a Ordenada Preditiva, os quais apontaram os Modelos Animal Tradicional e o Multirracial com Segregação, ambos com variância residual Gaussiana heterocedástica, como os de melhor ajuste. Os valores médios dos efeitos genéticos fixos foram positivos e similares nos dois modelos, sugerindo que os animais com maior proporção da raça Angus sofreram maior infestação e atribuindo-se, portanto, a raça Nelore importante papel na resistência ao carrapato. Verificou-se que a variância genética estimada pelo Modelo Animal Gaussiano heterocedástico para a raça Nelore foi 4,54 vezes maior do que a estimada para a raça Angus. As estimativas de herdabilidade nos diferentes grupos genéticos variaram de 0,12 a 0,15 e de 0,01 a 0,35, respectivamente, no Modelo Animal Tradicional e no Multirracial Gaussiano heterocedástico. A correlação de ordenamento de Spearman entre os valores genéticos preditos, considerando todos os reprodutores da população, foi 0,94. Contudo, ao considerar os melhores touros, TOP 10%, 20% e 30%, as diferenças com relação ao ordenamento foram mais evidentes (0,28 a 0,67). O modelo Animal Multirracial com Segregação com variâncias residuais heterogêneas foi o mais apropriado para avaliação genética da característica Contagem de Carrapatos de animais produtos do cruzamento Angus-Nelore.

ABSTRACT: This research identified the animal model that best describes the genetic and residual variations for tick counts in yearlings from a crossbred Angus-Nellore population of 6,951 animals that are progenies of 382 bulls and 6,198 cows. Genetic values were predicted by the Bayesian inference methodology. The models tested were: Traditional Animal, and Crossbred Animal with and without segregation, considering residual homoscedastic and heteroscedastic variances. The criteria of choice were the number of parameters, deviance information, and predictive order, which indicated the best fitfor the Traditional Animal model and Crossbred Animal model (with segregation), both with residual heteroscedastic Gaussian variance. The mean values of fixed genetic effects were positive and similar in the both models, indicating that animals with higher proportion of the Angus breed had greater infestation, and the Nellore breed was an important addition for resistance to ticks. The estimated genetic variation by the heteroscedastic Gaussian Animal model for the Nellore breed was 4.54-fold higher than that estimated for the Angus breed. The estimates of heritability of the different genetic groups ranged from 0.12 to 0.15 and from 0.01 to 0.35, respectively, for the Traditional Animal model and for the heteroscedastic Gaussian crossbred model. The Spearman’s rank-order correlation for the predicted genetic values was 0.94, considering all sires. However, when considering the top 10%, 20%, and 30% sires, differences in ranking were more evident (0.28 to 0.67). The Crossbred Animal model with segregation and heterogeneous residual variances was the most appropriate for genetic evaluation of tick counts on animals from Angus-Nellore crossings.

RESUMO: Esse estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito de um aditivo fitogênico a base de cardol, cardanol e ácido ricinoléico na qualidade físico-química do leite e perfil bioquímico de vacas da raça Holandês. Dezenove animais foram divididos em dois grupos: Grupo Controle (GI) e Grupo Tratado (GII). Previamente ao início do experimento, retirou-se a monensina sódica da ração fornecida aos animais. Este estudo consistiu de duas fases, sendo que na primeira fase, os animais do GI receberam a dieta padrão, sem aditivos, enquanto os animais do grupo GII receberam a ração padrão suplementada com 10 g dos aditivos fitogênicos durante 60 dias. Ao final da primeira etapa, os animais permaneceram 30 dias sem receber aditivos e na segunda fase os grupos foram invertidos, sendo que o GII novamente recebeu o aditivo fitogênico durante os 60 dias subsequentes. Foram realizadas análises físico-químicas do leite nos momentos 0, 15, 30, 45 e 60 dias do experimento e avaliados os parâmetros sanguíneos nos momentos 0 e 60 dias do experimento. Não se observou diferença significativa para a interação tratamento x tempo em nenhuma das variáveis, mas tendência entre grupos para o parâmetro de CCS, e houve diferença estatística para a proteína, assim como para a AST. Neste estudo observa-se que a adição de aditivo fitogênico modulador de fermentação ruminal a base de cardol, cardanol e ácido ricinoléico não compromete, de forma geral, a qualidade do leite, tendo resultados positivos para alguns parâmetros específicos como teor de proteína e aspartato aminotransferase.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to analyze the effect of phytogenic additives based on cardol, cardanol, and ricinoleic acid on the physico-chemical qualities and biochemical parameters of Holstein cow milk. Nineteen animals were divided into the control (GI) and treatment (GII) groups. Prior to the beginning of the experiment, sodium monensin was removed from the feed provided to the animals. This study consisted of two phases. In the first, animals from GI received the standard diet, without additives, while animals from GII received the standard diet supplemented with 10 g of phytogenic additives for 60 days. At the end of the first stage, the animals remained 30 days without receiving additives and in the second phase the groups were inverted, and the GII again received the phytogenic additive during the subsequent 60 days. Physical-chemical analyzes of milk were performed at moments 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days of the experiment and the blood parameters at times 0 and 60 days of the experiment were evaluated. There was no significant difference for the treatment x time interaction in any of the variables, but there was a trend between groups for the CCS parameter and there was a statistical difference for the protein, as well as for the AST. In this study it is observed that the addition of phytogenic additive modulating rumen fermentation based on cardol, cardanol and ricinoleic acid does not compromise, in general, the quality of milk, with positive results for some specific parameters such as protein content and aminotransferase.

RESUMO O objetivo desse estudo foi obter dados de ocorrência B. bigemina. e A. marginale em bovinos com sinais clínicos característicos da doença em diferentes propriedades da região oeste de Santa Catarina. Para isso, foram coletadas 149 amostras de sangue, para posterior confecção de esfregaço em lâminas e a realização da coloração com o corante tipo Romanowsky. Das 149 amostras pesquisadas, 78 (52,35%) foram positivas para A. marginale, 04 (2,68%) para B. bigemina e 03 (2,01%) amostras apresentaram co-infecção. Todos os casos descritos ocorreram em animais adultos, a partir de dois anos de idade, com maior ocorrência em fêmeas da raça holandesa 119/149 (79,86%). Quanto à presença de ectoparasitas, foram observadas moscas hematófagas em todas as propriedades e carrapatos em 58/149 (38,92%) animais. Os resultados demonstram uma maior ocorrência de A. marginale evidenciando a necessidade dos profissionais buscarem estratégias de controle e prevenção, principalmente nas épocas de maior ocorrência dos vetores. A confirmação a partir do suporte laboratorial, por esfregaço de sangue corado, além de prático e barato, é um método que ajuda os profissionais a identificar a etiologia dos casos suspeitos. Além disso, com base nessas informações, podemos promover a elaboração de estratégias de prevenção e tratamento com base em técnicas simples e rápidas de diagnóstico, focadas em agentes específicos da doença.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to obtain data on the occurrence of Babesia bigemina e Anaplasma marginale in cattle with characteristic clinical signs of the disease, in different properties in western Santa Catarina. For this, 149 blood sample were collected and slides smears were done and the staining with the Romanowsky kind dye subsequently. Of the 149 samples surveyed, 78 (52.35%) were positive for A. marginale, 04 (2.68%) for B. bigemina, and 03 (2.01%) samples showed co-infection. All described cases occurred in adult animals, from two years old, with Holstein females the highest occurrence represented 119/149 (79.86%). Regarding the presence of ectoparasites, hematophagous flies were observed in all properties and ticks in 58/149 (38.92%) animals. The results showed a higher occurrence of A. marginale, evidencing the need to seek strategies of control and prevention by the veterinary professionals, especially in moments of greater occurrence of the vectors. The confirmation as from laboratory support by stained blood smears beyond being cheaper practical is a method that helping professionals identify the suspected cases etiology. Moreover, based on this information, we can promote the elaboration of prevention and treatment strategies based on simple and fast diagnostic techniques, focused on especific disease agents.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar o modelo mais adequado para avaliação genética do ganho de peso pós-desmama em uma população multirracial de Angus-Nelore. Foram testados três modelos com uso do método de inferência bayesiana: animal tradicional (M1), animal multirracial sem (M2) e com segregação (M3). A escolha do melhor modelo seguiu os critérios: número de parâmetros (Np), critério de desvio de informação (CDI), predição condicional (PCO) e desvio com base nos fatores de Bayes. Foram estimadas as correlações de postos de Spearman para os 10, 20 e 30% melhores touros. M1 apresentou os maiores valores para todos os critérios, exceto para Np, e a menor estimativa de herdabilidade direta, de 0,15±0,01. As estimativas de herdabilidade de M2 e M3 foram maiores e similares, de 0,29±0,02 e 0,27±0,02, respectivamente. M3 apresentou os menores valores para desvio-médio, CDI e PCO, tendo sido o modelo de melhor ajuste entre os três testados. A correlação de Spearman entre os valores genéticos previstos para os modelos variou de 0,69 a 0,99. Os modelos multirraciais são mais adequados para a avaliação genética de populações multirraciais, e o M3 apresenta o melhor ajuste para a população estudada.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to identify the most suitable model for the genetic evaluation of post-weaning weight gain in a multibreed Angus-Nelore population. Three models were tested using the Bayesian inference method: traditional animal model (M1), multibreed animal model without (M2) and with segregation (M3). The choice of the best model followed the criteria: number of parameters (Np), deviance information criterion (DIC), conditional predictive ordinate (CPO), and deviance based on Bayes factors. Spearman’s rank correlations were estimated for the top 10, 20, and 30% sires. M1 presented the highest values for all criteria, except for Np, and the lowest direct heritability estimate of 0.15±0.01. The heritability estimates for M2 and M3 were higher and similar, being 0.29±0.02 and 0.27±0.02, respectively. M3 showed the lowest values for mean deviance, DIC, and CPO, being the best-fitting model among the three tested. Spearman’s correlation between the predicted genetic values for the models ranged from 0.69 to 0.99. The multibreed models are the most suitable for the genetic evaluation of multibreed populations, and M3 shows the best fit for the studied population.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar, por meio de simulação de dados, o impacto das restrições no número máximo de irmãos completos e meios-irmãos selecionados para machos e fêmeas no nível de endogamia e ganho genético do rebanho. Os dados originais são provenientes das populações reais A e B, compostas por suínos da raça Pietrain e Landrace, respectivamente. Para gerar as populações simuladas, foi desenvolvido um simulador em linguagem Fortran utilizando as (co)variâncias dos valores genéticos e as taxas produtivas e reprodutivas obtidas das populações A e B. Dois arquivos de dados foram criados. O primeiro continha o pedigree dos 10 anos anteriores, com 21.906 e 251.343 animais nas populações A e B, respectivamente. O segundo incluiu os valores genéticos para idade para atingir 110 Kg de peso vivo, espessura de toucinho e conversão alimentar, para ambas as populações; profundidade do músculo longissimus dorsi, apenas para a população A; e número de leitões vivos no 5º dia de vida por parto, apenas para a população B. Três cenários foram simulados com dez gerações, variando as restrições quanto ao número de irmãos completos e meios-irmãos selecionados para machos e fêmeas, com 30 repetições por geração e cenário. Independentemente da estratégia de acasalamento utilizada em um núcleo de produção fechada, há aumento nos níveis de endogamia. Aumentos de endogamia são maiores em populações de menor tamanho efetivo. Restrições ao número de irmãos completos e meios-irmãos selecionados são eficazes na redução de incrementos na endogamia. A restrição de no máximo dois irmãos completos, três meios-irmãos para machos e três irmãs completas para fêmeas fornece os maiores ganhos genéticos.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate, through data simulation, the impact of restrictions on the maximum number of full- and half-sibs selected for males and females on the level of inbreeding and genetic gain of the herd. Data came from real populations A and B, composed of Pietrain and Landrace breed pigs, respectively. To generate the simulated populations, a Fortran-language simulator was developed using the (co)variances of the breeding values and the productive and reproductive rates obtained from populations A and B. Two data files were created. The first contained the pedigree of the previous 10 years, with 21,906 and 251,343 animals in populations A and B, respectively. The second included breeding values for age to reach 110 Kg body weight, backfat thickness, and feed conversion, for both populations; longissimus dorsi muscle depth, for population A only; and number of live piglets at the 5th day of life per farrowing, for population B only. Three scenarios were simulated with ten generations by varying the restrictions on the number of full- and half-sibs selected for males and females, with 30 replicates per generation and scenario. Regardless of the mating strategy used in a closed production unit, there is an increase in inbreeding levels. Inbreeding increases are larger in populations of smaller effective size. Restrictions on the number of full- and half-sibs selected are effective in reducing increments in inbreeding. Restriction to a maximum of two full-sibs and three half-sibs for males and three full sisters for females provided the highest genetic gains.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se identificar o modelo de regressão não linear que melhor descreve as curvas de produção de leite e de porcentagens de gordura e proteína; a estação e idade ao parto que resultam em maiores produções. Nas análises, foram utilizados 8047 registros de produção de leite e porcentagens de gordura e proteína provenientes de 1330 vacas da raça Holandesa, criadas no Rio Grande do Sul, nascidas de 1989 a 2011. Após a definição do modelo de regressão não linear mais adequado, procedeu-se à realização do teste de identidade de modelos e de igualdade de parâmetros para as diferentes classes de estação e idade da vaca ao parto. O quadrado médio do resíduo, desvio médio absoluto, erro quadrático médio de predição e a porcentagem de curvas estimadas por animal apontaram a Função Linear Hiperbólica (FLH) como a mais adequada para descrever as curvas de produção de leite e teores de gordura e proteína. Vacas com ocorrência de partos nas estações de outono e inverno produzem maior quantidade de leite e menor teor de gordura e proteína do leite do que aquelas que parem nas estações de primavera e verão. Vacas com idades ao parto entre 46 e 93 meses produzem maior quantidade de leite e as com 94 a 118 meses, maior teor de gordura do leite.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to identify a nonlinear regression model that better describes the milk production and the percentages of fat and protein curves, and to identify the season and age of calving that result in higher productions. For the analysis, 8,047 records of milk production and percentages of fat and protein obtained from 1,330 Holstein breed cows raised in Rio Grande do Sul, born from 1989 to 2011, were used. After determining the most appropriate nonlinear regression model, the identity of models and the equality of parameter tests for the different classes of season and age of calving were performed. Residual mean square, mean absolute deviation, mean squared prediction error and percentage of estimated curves per animal, indicated the Linear Hyperbolic Function (LHF) as the most appropriate to describe the milk production and the levels of fat and protein curves. Cows calving in the autumn and winter seasons yield higher quantities of milk and lower fat and protein content than those calved in the spring and summer seasons. Cows aged between 46 and 93 months at calving yield higher milk quantities, and those with calving age between 94 and 118 months produced more fat.

Objetivou-se comparar um modelo multi-característica padrão com modelos de análise de fatores (AF) e de componentes principais (CP) para estimar parâmetros genéticos para a produção de leite no dia do controle (PLDC) de vacas da raça Holandesa. O arquivo de trabalho constituiu-se de 4.616 registros mensais de PLDC de primeiras lactações de vacas da raça Holandesa. As PLDC foram agrupadas em dez classes mensais, entre o 5o e 305o dia da lactação (PLDC1 a PLDC10). Foram realizadas análises considerando 11 modelos diferentes, como segue: multi-característica padrão (MC); cinco modelos de posto reduzido, para a matriz de covariância genética, ajustando um a cinco (CP1 ... CP5) componentes principais; e dois modelos utilizando análise de fatores (F1, F2, F3, F4 e F5). Para todos os modelos, foram considerados como aleatórios os efeitos genético aditivo e o residual e como fixos os de grupo de contemporâneos, da idade da vaca ao parto (linear e quadrático) e dias em lactação (linear). Os valores de Log L, AIC e BIC melhoraram com o aumento do número de parâmetros até CP4 e AF4. Comparando CP4 e AF4, observa-se que CP4 resultou em melhores valores de Log L, AIC e BIC. As estimativas de herdabilidade e correlações genéticas utilizando os modelos MC, CP4 e AF4 foram similares, variando de 0,06 (PL6) a 0,65 (PL10) e de 0,05 (PL4xPL10) a 0,94 (PL2xPL3), respectivamente, indicando que a estrutura de covariâncias genéticas entre as produções de leite no dia do controle pode ser ajustada utilizando um modelo de posto reduzido, contendo quatro componentes principais ou quatro fatores

The objective was to compare a standard multi-trait (MT) analysis model with factor (FA) and principal components (PC) analyses models to estimated genetic parameters for Holstein cows test day milk production (TD). The data file was composed by 4.616 TD at first lactation registers. The TD was grouped into ten monthly classes of lactation, from the 5th and the 305th day of lactation (TD1 to TD10). Analyses were performed considering 11 different models: standard multi-traits (MT), five reduced rank models to genetic covariance matrix adjusting one (PC1), two (PC2), three (PC3), four (PC4) and five (PD5) principal components and five models using factor analyses (F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5). To all the models the effects additive genetic and residual were considered as random and the effects of contemporary group, age of cow at parturition (linear and quadratic) and days in lactation (linear) were considered as fixed. The values of Log L, AIC e BIC improved with the augment of the number of parameters until CP4 and AF4. Comparing CP4 and AF4 is possible to verify that CP4 proportioned better values to Log L, AIC e BIC. The heritabilities and genetic correlations estimated to the ten test day milk production using MC, CP4 and AF4 models were similar ranging from 0.06 (PL6) to 0.65 (PL10) and from 0.05 (PL4xPL10) to 0.94 (PL2xPL3), respectively, indicating that the structure of the genetic covariance between the TD milk productions can be adjusted using a reduced rank model with four principal components or four factors
