Abstract Pathogenic DNA alterations in GJB2 are present in nearly half of non-syndromic hearing loss cases with autosomal recessive inheritance. The most frequent variant in GJB2 causing non-syndromic hearing loss is the frameshifting c.35del. GJB2 encodes Cx26, a protein of the connexin family that assembles hemichannels and gap junctions. The expression of paralogous proteins is believed to compensate for the loss of function of specific connexins. As Cx26 has been involved in cell differentiation in distinct tissues, we employed stem cells derived from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs), homozygous for the c.35del variant, to assess GJB2 roles in stem cell differentiation and the relationship between its loss of function and the expression of paralogous genes. Primary SHED cultures from patients and control individuals were compared. SHEDs from patients had significantly less GJB2 mRNA and increased amount of GJA1 (Cx43), but not GJB6 (Cx30) or GJB3 (Cx31) mRNA. In addition, they presented higher induced differentiation to adipocytes and osteocytes but lower chondrocyte differentiation. Our results suggest that GJA1 increased expression may be involved in functional compensation for GJB2 loss of function in human stem cells, and it may explain changes in differentiation properties observed in SHEDs with and without the c.35del variant. abstract The objective of this work is to analyze transformer-based machine translation models. It aims to test the feasibility of using trained models based on specialized corpus. For the training of such model, a parallel English-French corpus was built with seven texts related to the Convention of 25 October 1980 on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. The translation results obtained by the trained model were compared with those produced by Google Translate. For the evaluation stage, sacreBLEU automatic evaluation and human evaluation methods were used. The outcome of the automatic evaluation of sentences produced by the trained model was, on average, higher than those generated by the non-trained model. Resumo O presente trabalho possui como objetivo a análise dos modelos de tradução automática baseados em Transformer. Em específico, a pesquisa visa ao teste da viabilidade do uso de modelos treinados a partir de corpus especializado. Para o treinamento do modelo, foi construído um corpus paralelo inglês-francês a partir de sete textos da Convenção de 25 de outubro de 1980 sobre os Aspectos Civis do Rapto Internacional de Crianças. Os resultados de tradução obtidos pelo modelo treinado foram comparados com aqueles produzidos pelo Google Tradutor. Para a etapa de avaliação foram utilizados os métodos de avaliação automática sacreBLEU e avaliação humana. Os resultados da avaliação automática de frases produzidas pelo modelo treinado foram, em média, mais positivos que aqueles gerados pelo modelo não treinado. A avaliação humana das frases revelou que houve erros de adequação no uso da linguagem específica à matéria da Convenção da Haia de 1980 tanto em frases geradas pelo modelo treinado, quanto em frases geradas pelo modelo do Google Tradutor. Resumen Este artículo analiza las relaciones geopolíticas en el contexto del Corredor Bioceánico Brasil-Chile, con énfasis en la importancia de Brasil y sus implicaciones para los países involucrados y la región. El objetivo es investigar las implicaciones geopolíticas del proyecto y los desafios y oportunidades relacionados con su implementación. La metodología adoptada consistió en una investigación bibliográfica en tres etapas: revisión bibliográfica, análisis de los datos recopilados y síntesis de los resultados. Los resultados de la investigación resaltan la posición central de Brasil en el proyecto, como una de las principales potencias regionales y su historial de cooperación con los países vecinos. El Corredor Bioceánico Brasil-Chile se considera un proyecto estratégico para la integración comercial y logística en América del Sur, además de fortalecer las relaciones bilaterales entre Brasil y Chile. El estudio también destaca la importancia geopolítica de Brasil en el contexto del corredor, promoviendo la integración regional e impulsando la cooperación entre el Mercosury la Alianza del Pacífico. La investigación concluye que la implementación del proyecto depende de la continuidad de las relaciones internacionales, la superación de desafíos geopolíticos y la implementación de políticas públicas favorables. Para lograrlo, Brasil debe fortalecer sus relaciones con los países involucrados y con organizaciones internacionales, buscando financiamiento y apoyo para la conclusión del proyecto. Abstract This article examines the geopolitical relations in the context of the Brazil-Chile Bi-Oceanic Corridor, with a focus on the importance of Brazil and its implications for the countries involved and the region. The objective is to investigate the geopolitical implications of the project and the challenges and opportunities related to its implementation. The methodology adopted consisted of a three-stage literature research: literature review, analysis of collected data, and synthesis of results. The research results highlight Brazil's central position in the project as one of the main regional powers and its history of cooperation with neighboring countries. The Brazil-Chile Bi-Oceanic Corridor is considered a strategic project for commercial and logistical integration in South America, while also strengthening the bilateral relations between Brazil and Chile. Hematological problems are associated with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Respiratory impairment is the higher point studied, although without experimental studies related to the oxygen transport performed by erythrocytes. Therefore, we decided to investigate if erythrocytes from COVID-19 patients have their functionality changed. The case-control study included hospitalized patients with a positive real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) result admitted to University Hospital. Volunteers (negative RT-PCR results) were recruited as a control group. Thus, we assessed different erythrocytes parameters, oxidative stress markers, and biophysical studies using whole blood and isolated hemoglobin. We found a decrease of 51% in oxygen uptake and reduced antioxidant enzyme activity in COVID-19 patients compared to controls. Raman spectrometry showed structural changes in the hemoglobin and lipids of the erythrocytes from COVID-19 patients; thus, these results were consolidated with an increase in Young’s modulus in erythrocytes followed by morphology changes. Besides, isolated hemoglobin from COVID-19 patients has a distinct interaction profile using a ligand model compared to the control. Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the body yield and quality of fresh and post-freezing filet of male and female fish of inbred and non-inbred AquaAmérica genetic group and the hybrid between the AquaAmérica and Tilamax varieties. Forty fish (20 males and 20 females) of each genetic group were housed in four 48-m3 hapa net cages, getting 120 fish per cage. The fish were housed at 51 days of age and farmed for 269 days. Pre-slaughter weight was higher (P<0.05) in the AquaAmérica × Tilamax males (0.805±0.204 kg) than in the inbred AquaAmérica male (0.643±0.115 kg). Filet yield percentage was higher (P<0.05) in the AquaAmérica × Tilamax males (32.14±4.72%) than in the inbred AquaAmérica (28.15±2.67%) and non-inbred AquaAmérica (29.06±2.80%) males. Head and viscera yield percentages, pH, color values (L*, a* and b*), shear force, drip loss and cooking loss did not differ significantly between the genetic groups and sexes. Alterations in meat quality were observed after freezing. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate a possible increase of adhesive capsulitis incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A total of 1,983 patients with shoulder disorders were retrospectively analyzed regarding gender, age, development of adhesive capsulitis and comorbidities (systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, depression, and anxiety) in two different periods: from March 2019 to February 2020 and from March 2020 to February 2021. Descriptive and quantitative variables were statistically analyzed. The program used for the calculations was SPSS 17.0 for Windows. Results: During the pandemic, there was a 2.41-fold increase (p < 0.001) in cases of adhesive capsulitis (compared to the previous year). Patients with depression and anxiety had a significantly increased risk by 8.8 (p < 0.001) and 14 (p < 0.001) times, respectively, of developing frozen shoulder (regarding the two periods studied). Conclusion: A significant increase in the incidence of frozen shoulder was observed after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in addition to a simultaneous increase of psychosomatic disorders. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar se houve aumento da incidência de capsulite adesiva durante a pandemia de COVID-19. Métodos: Foram analisados, retrospectivamente, 1.983 pacientes com desordens do ombro quanto a sexo, idade, desenvolvimento de capsulite adesiva e comorbidades (hipertensão arterial sistêmica, diabetes mellitus, dislipidemia, hipo/hipertireoidismo, depressão e ansiedade) em dois períodos distintos: de março de 2019 a fevereiro de 2020 e de março de 2020 a fevereiro de 2021. Procedeu-se à análise estatística das variáveis descritivas e quantitativas, utilizando o software SPSS 17.0 for Windows para os cálculos. Resultados: Durante a pandemia, houve aumento de 2,41 vezes (p < 0,001) de casos de capsulite adesiva em relação ao ano anterior. Considerando os períodos estudados, pacientes com depressão e ansiedade apresentaram um risco significativamente aumentado em 8,8 (p < 0,001) e 14 (p < 0,001) vezes, respectivamente, de desenvolver a patologia em questão. Abstract Objective To evaluate clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients infected with HIV, and to compare with a paired sample without HIV infection. Methods This is a substudy of a Brazilian multicentric cohort that comprised two periods (2020 and 2021). Data was obtained through the retrospective review of medical records. Primary outcomes were admission to the intensive care unit, invasive mechanical ventilation, and death. Patients with HIV and controls were matched for age, sex, number of comorbidities, and hospital of origin using the technique of propensity score matching (up to 4:1). They were compared using the Chi-Square or Fisher's Exact tests for categorical variables and the Wilcoxon for numerical variables. Results Throughout the study, 17,101 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized, and 130 (0.76%) of those were infected with HIV. The median age was 54 (IQR: 43.0;64.0) years in 2020 and 53 (IQR: 46.0;63.5) years in 2021, with a predominance of females in both periods. People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and their controls showed similar prevalence for admission to the ICU and invasive mechanical ventilation requirement in the two periods, with no significant differences. ABSTRACT The article addresses the impacts caused by floodings in the municipality of São Paulo in the eighteenth century, starting in 1750. Our discussion details the reactions of local authorities to the hydrological dynamics of the region in a period before the radical interventions that would occur in the following centuries. We identified seventeen occasions in the period when the São Paulo Municipal Council was compelled to take measures to mitigate the harmful effects of rainwater accumulation, river flooding or excessive runoff from built structures such as fountains, aqueducts, and dikes. The sources demonstrate the recurrence of both the same types of water-caused problems and ways of coping adopted by the Municipal Council, which, as a rule, was only able to act reactively, ordering the execution of repair works. RESUMO O artigo pretende abordar os impactos ocasionados por alagamentos no município de São Paulo no século XVIII, a partir de 1750. Nossa discussão busca expor as reações do poder local à dinâmica hidrológica da região em um momento anterior às severas intervenções que ocorreriam nos séculos seguintes. Identificamos, no período investigado, dezessete ocasiões em que a Câmara Municipal de São Paulo se viu compelida a tomar medidas para mitigar os efeitos danosos do acúmulo de águas pluviais, cheias de rios ou escoamento excessivo a partir de estruturas edificadas como fontes, aquedutos e diques. A documentação demonstra a recorrência tanto dos mesmos tipos de problemas causados pelas águas quanto das formas de enfrentamento adotadas pela Câmara, que, via de regra, só conseguiu agir reativamente, determinando apenas a realização de obras de reparo. Resumo Objetivos: Avaliar os possíveis impactos da Covid-19 na prática da cirurgia bucomaxilofacial, bem como os protocolos empregados pelos cirurgiões bucomaxilofaciais para minimizar os riscos de contaminação. Método: Foram feitas buscas em diferentes bases de dados até 15 de março de 2021. Foram incluídos artigos relacionados à dinâmica da cirurgia oral no contexto da pandemia de Covid-19. Os artigos foram considerados elegíveis se atendessem aos seguintes critérios de inclusão: estudos observacionais que fornecessem recomendações sobre medidas de cirurgia bucomaxilofacial durante a pandemia de Covid-19 e que analisassem o risco de contaminação de pacientes/profissionais com SARS-CoV-2. Resultados: Sete estudos preencheram os critérios de inclusão e foram selecionados para a presente revisão sistemática. As demandas por equipamentos de proteção individual aumentaram significativamente, estudos relataram a escassez de equipamentos fundamentais, como máscaras FFP2/N95. Foram observadas mudanças significativas na infraestrutura das unidades ambulatoriais, cirúrgicas e de internação e nos próprios protocolos assistenciais. Conclusão: A pandemia de Covid-19 afetou particularmente a rotina dos residentes de cirurgia bucomaxilofacial. Diversas recomendações adicionais para a prática cirúrgica ou para a equipe cirúrgica foram avaliadas e discutidas, como a feitura de cirurgias prioritariamente de urgência e emergência, atendimento e triagem remota de pacientes, adiamento de cirurgias eletivas e novos métodos de ensino em programas de residência em cirurgia bucomaxilofacial. Além disso, a triagem de pacientes e da equipe cirúrgica para Covid-19 é fortemente recomendada.

Abstract Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the possible impacts of COVID-19 on oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, as well as the protocols employed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons to minimize the risks of contamination. Methods: Searches were performed in different databases up to 15 March 2021. Articles related to oral surgery dynamics within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic were included. The articles were considered eligible if they met the following inclusion criteria: observational studies that provided recommendations regarding maxillofacial surgery measures during the COVID-19 pandemic and that analyzed the risk of contamination of patients/professionals with SARS-CoV-2. Results: Seven studies met the inclusion criteria and were selected for the present systematic review. Demands for personal protective equipment increased significantly, with studies reporting the scarcity of fundamental equipment such as FFP2/N95 masks. Significant changes in the infrastructure of outpatient, surgical and inpatient units and in the care protocols themselves were observed. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic particularly affected the routine of oral and maxillofacial surgery residents. Several additional recommendations for surgical practice or for the surgical team were evaluated and discussed, such as performing primarily urgent and emergency surgeries, remote patient care and screening, postponing elective surgeries, and new teaching methods in oral and maxillofacial surgery residency programs. In addition, screening of patients and of the surgery team for COVID-19 is strongly recommended.

Abstract Clinker is the raw material used in the manufacture of cement. However, this material is very harmful to the environment, since it is estimated that for every ton of clinker produced, about 1.0 ton of CO2 is released into the atmosphere. For this reason, alternatives were sought for the use of other materials that are less harmful to the environment. This has led to the use of industrial by-products with the aim of increasing their use and thus reducing the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere. Blast furnace slag is a by-product used in the manufacture of some cementitious products. The aim of this research is to conduct a study on the use of slag as an additive for cement or concrete. The mortar samples were tested according to Brazilian, American and European technical standards. Physical, chemical and compressive strength tests were carried out which confirmed the possibility of using the slag without chemical or thermal activation.

RESUMO A avaliação estrutural do cérebro, feita por meio dos exames de neuroimagem, é a forma mais utilizada de ferramenta diagnóstica e de acompanhamento das doenças neurodegenerativas. Técnicas de imagem mais sofisticadas podem ser necessárias especialmente nas fases mais precoces, antes mesmo do surgimento de quaisquer sintomas, porém costumam ser caras e pouco acessíveis. Sendo assim, é de fundamental importância a busca de biomarcadores não invasivos, de fácil acesso e baixo custo, que possam ser utilizados para rastreio populacional e diagnóstico mais precoce. Nesse cenário, o número de estudos com ênfase em técnicas de imagem para avaliação estrutural da retina em pacientes com doenças neurodegenerativas tem aumentado nos últimos anos. A retina apresenta similaridade embriológica, histológica, bioquímica, microvascular e neurotransmissora com o córtex cerebral, tornando-se assim um biomarcador único e promissor nas doenças neurodegenerativas. A tomografia de coerência óptica é uma moderna técnica de imagem não invasiva que gera imagens seccionais bidimensionais de alta resolução e medidas volumétricas tridimensionais reprodutivas do disco óptico e da mácula. Essa tecnologia é amplamente utilizada na prática oftalmológica para o diagnóstico e o seguimento de diversas doenças oculares, como glaucoma, retinopatia diabética e degeneração macular relacionada à idade. A redução da espessura da camada de fibras nervosas da retina e das camadas de células ganglionares em pacientes com doenças neurodegenerativas foi demonstrada em diversos estudos clínicos nos últimos anos. Nesta revisão, abordamos as principais aplicações clínicas da tomografia de coerência óptica nas doenças neurodegenerativas e discutimos o seu papel como potencial biomarcador nessas afecções.

ABSTRACT Structural imaging of the brain is the most widely used diagnostic tool for investigating neurodegenerative diseases. More advanced structural imaging techniques have been applied to early or prodromic phases, but they are expensive and not widely available. Therefore, it is highly desirable to search for noninvasive, easily accessible, low-cost clinical biomarkers suitable for large-scale population screening, in order to focus on making diagnoses at the earliest stages of the disease. In this scenario, imaging studies focusing on the structures of the retina have increasingly been used for evaluating neurodegenerative diseases. The retina shares embryological, histological, biochemical, microvascular and neurotransmitter similarities with the cerebral cortex, thus making it a uniquely promising biomarker for neurodegenerative diseases. Optical coherence tomography is a modern noninvasive imaging technique that provides high-resolution two-dimensional cross-sectional images and quantitative reproducible three-dimensional volumetric measurements of the optic nerve head and retina. This technology is widely used in ophthalmology practice for diagnosing and following up several eye diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Its clinical impact on neurodegenerative diseases has raised enormous interest over recent years, as several clinical studies have demonstrated that these diseases give rise to reduced thickness of the inner retinal nerve fiber layer, mainly composed of retinal ganglion cells and their axons. In this review, we aimed to address the clinical utility of optical coherence tomography for diagnosing and evaluating different neurodegenerative diseases, to show the potential of this noninvasive and easily accessible method.

ABSTRACT Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is a highly contagious viral disease commonly associated to Enteroviruses (EV). During 2018, Brazil faced massive HFMD outbreaks spread across the country. This study aimed to characterize the EV responsible for the HFMD outbreak that occurred in Paraiba State, Brazilian Northeastern region, in 2018, followed by a phylogenetic analysis to detail information on its genetic diversity. A total of 49 serum samples (one from each patient) collected from children ≤ 15 years old, clinically diagnosed with HFMD were tested for EV using conventional RT-PCR and RT-qPCR. EV infection was confirmed in 71.4% (35/49) of samples. The mean and median ages were 1.83 years and one year old, respectively. Twenty-two EV-positive samples were successfully sequenced and classified as EV-A species; 13 samples were also identified with the CV-A6 genotype. The phylogenetic analysis (VP1 region) of three samples revealed that the detected CV-A6 strains belonged to sub-lineage D3. The CV-A6 strains detected here clustered with strains from South America, Europe and West Asia strains that were also involved in HFMD cases during the 2017-2018 seasons, in addition to the previously detected Brazilian CV-A6 strains from 2012 to 2017, suggesting a global co-circulation of a set of different CV-A6 strains introduced in the country at different times. The growing circulation of the emerging CV-A6 associated with HFMD, together with the detection of more severe cases worldwide, suggests the need for a more intense surveillance system of HFMD in Brazil. In addition, this investigation was performed exclusively on serum samples, and the analysis of whole blood samples should be considered and could have shown advantages when employed in the diagnosis of enteroviral HFMD outbreaks.

ABSTRACT. This study aimed to evaluate forage yield, tiller population density, canopy height, nutritional value as well as cattle performance in alternate stocking from three tropical forage cultivars. The experiment followed a randomized block design, in a 3 x 3 factorial scheme with three replications. Three forage cultivars (Marandu, Massai and Xaraés) distributed in nine hectares were evaluated in three dry season periods (transition wet/dry, dry, and end of dry season), with repeated measures over time. The following variables were evaluated: canopy height, leaf: stem ratio, forage mass, leaf mass, stem mass and dead material mass. Total digestible nutrients, crude protein and in vitro dry mass digestibility were evaluated regarding forage nutrition. Animal performance, using 36 eleven-month-old animals (half-blood Nelore), was evaluated by the daily average gain and weight gain by area. During pre-grazing, canopy height presented interaction among forage cultivars and the evaluated periods. The average daily gain showed no interaction among cultivars and period of the year the similarity in animal performance among the cultivars Marandu and Massai show that the Massai grass can be used as an alternative for forage diversification under an alternate management system.

Resumo A trombose de veia porta (TVP) é uma doença na qual ocorre trombose desde os ramos intra-hepáticos da veia porta, podendo se estender até a veia esplênica e/ou veia mesentérica superior, estando associada, na maioria das vezes, à cirrose hepática. A TVP não associada a cirrose é rara. O objetivo deste artigo foi relatar dois casos de TVP não associados à cirrose, que foram tratados com anticoagulação e tiveram evolução clínica satisfatória.

Abstract Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a disease in which thrombosis occurs from the intrahepatic branches of the portal vein, and may extend to the splenic vein and/or superior mesenteric vein. It is most often associated with liver cirrhosis. PVT not associated with cirrhosis is rare. The aim of this article is to report two cases of PVT in which it was not associated with cirrhosis. Both were treated with anticoagulation and clinical progress afterwards was good.
