RESUMEN Objetivo: Estimar la prevalencia de simultaneidad de obesidad, hipertensión y/o diabetes y la asociación con variables sociodemográficas y relacionadas con el estilo de vida. Métodos: Los datos fueron obtenido en la Encuesta Nacional de Salud Brasileña, una encuesta a nivel nacional, realizada en los hogares brasileños y llevada a cabo en 2013. La presencia de dos /tres enfermedades (obesidad, hipertensión y diabetes) se consideró multimorbilidad de las enfermedades no transmisibles (ENT). El modelo de regresión logística de probabilidades proporcionales, estratificado por sexo, se utilizó para evaluar los factores sociodemográficos y de estilo de vida asociados con la multimorbilidad de las ENT, considerando la complejidad de la muestra y los pesos de la muestra. Resultados: La prevalencia de multimorbilidad de las ENT fue del 9,6%. Las probabilidades de multimorbilidad son más altas con el aumento de la edad, entre los negros, pero más bajas en la región norte en comparación con otras regiones del país para los dos sexos. Las probabilidades de multimorbilidad de las ENT aumentaron entre las mujeres que tenían niveles más bajos de educación y pasaban más tiempo viendo la televisión, y entre los hombres que vivían con una pareja y no practicaban la actividad física recomendada para el tiempo libre. Conclusión: Los factores sociodemográficos y los comportamientos relacionados con el estilo de vida se asociaron con la presencia de obesidad, hipertensión y/o diabetes.

ABSTRACT Objective: To estimate the prevalence of simultaneity of obesity, hypertension and/or diabetes and the association with sociodemographic and lifestyle-related behavior variables. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with data from the 2013 National Health Survey. The presence of two/three diseases (obesity, hypertension, and diabetes) was considered multimorbidity of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Proportional odds logistic regression model, stratified by sex, was used to assess the sociodemographic and lifestyle factors associated with multimorbidity of NCDs, considering the sample complexity and sample weights. Results: The prevalence of multimorbidity of NCDs was 9.6%. The odds of multimorbidity are higher with increasing age, among blacks, but lower in the north region when compared with other regions of the country for both sexes. The odds of multimorbidity of NDCs increased among women who had lower levels of education and spent more time TV watching, and among men who lived with a partner and did not practice the recommended leisure-time physical activity. Conclusion: Sociodemographic factors and lifestyle-related behaviors were associated with the presence of obesity, hypertension, and/or diabetes.

ABSTRACT. Brazilian consumers are increasingly seeking unique vegetable products, such as mini lettuces. However, their production is hampered by a wide variety of pathogens, including Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, which causes soft rot in lettuce. In this study, we aimed to select biofortified mini lettuce genotypes with good agronomic traits and resistance to P. carotovorum. A randomized block design consisting of 12 treatments, conducted in a field and greenhouse (Federal University of Uberlândia [UFU]), was used to select biofortified mini lettuce with good agronomic traits: SPAD index, stem and plant diameter, stem length, plant height, number of leaves, fresh weight, and bolt resistance. A completely randomized design consisting of 13 treatments was used for resistance or susceptibility testing. The bacterial suspension was inoculated and the following were assessed: disease severity, 16 days after inoculation; area under the disease progress curve, calculated separately at 4, 8, 12, and 16 days after inoculation as well as the sum of data calculated on all the assessment days; and the disease resistance class. The genotypes UFU 215#1 and UFU 215#2 had significantly high carotenoid concentrations. The genotypes UFU 66#4, UFU 215#1, and UFU 215#7 showed high bolt resistance. All genotypes were classified as resistant or moderately resistant to the P. carotovorum isolate, UFU A7.

Abstract Increased interaction between wild and urban environments owing to human population growth, increased anthropization of biomes, and habitat loss for wild animals increases the spread of infectious and parasitic agents. The present study reports on the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites in carnivorous mammals at two conservation institutions in the state of Goiás, Brazil. Fecal samples from 39 adult carnivores were collected after spontaneous defecation and analyzed by flotation and sedimentation. The structure and management data of each institution were recorded. Parasitism prevalence, binomial confidence intervals (CI) at 95%, variables associated with the presence of contact animals, size of the enclosure and type of food were recorded. The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in the samples analyzed was 71.8% (CI 55.1–83.0; 28/39). Ancylostomatidae, Toxocara spp., Toxascaris leonina, Strongyloides spp., Calodium hepaticum, and Trematoda eggs, and Cystoisospora spp. oocysts were detected. Environmental conditions were not correlated with parasitism prevalence; however, the parasites found could be managed, considering their biology, such as controlling synanthropic and domestic animals in captivity, feeding with healthy feed.

Resumo A crescente urbanização e a perda de hábitat para animais selvagens tem levado a uma maior interação entre ambientes selvagens e humanos, o que pode favorecer a disseminação de agentes infecciosos e parasitários. O presente estudo relata a ocorrência de parasitas gastrointestinais em mamíferos carnívoros em duas instituições de conservação no estado de Goiás, Brasil. Amostras fecais de 39 carnívoros adultos foram coletadas após a defecação espontânea e analisadas por flotação e sedimentação. Foram registrados os dados de estrutura e gestão de cada instituição. Prevalência de parasitismo, intervalo de confiança binomial (IC) a 95% e variáveis associadas a presença de animais de contato, tamanho do recinto e tipo de alimento foram registrados. A prevalência geral de parasitas gastrointestinais nas amostras analisadas foi de 71,8% (IC 55,1–83,0; 28/39). Foram detectados ovos de Ancylostomatidae, Toxocara spp., Toxascaris leonina, Strongyloides spp., Calodium hepaticum e de Trematoda e oocistos de Cystoisospora spp.. As condições ambientais não apresentaram correlação com a prevalência de parasitismo; entretanto, os parasitos encontrados podem ser manejados, considerando-se sua biologia, como controlar animais sinantrópicos e domésticos em cativeiro, e uso de alimentos livres de contaminantes.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

RESUMO A produção de biodiesel tem crescido e ganhado destaque no cenário energético mundial. Com isso, seu principal coproduto, o glicerol bruto (GB), tem acompanhado esse aumento, ocasionando a formação de grandes estoques deste resíduo. Uma alternativa promissora para a sua redução consiste na utilização por processos biológicos anaeróbios visando à produção de biogás, tanto hidrogênio (H2) quanto metano (CH4). Sabe-se que a eficiência dessa bioconversão aumenta por meio da codigestão com outros resíduos orgânicos. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo consistiu na codigestão do GB, proveniente da produção de biodiesel a partir de óleos residuais domésticos, com vinhaça citrícola (VC), em dois estágios sequenciais. No 1º estágio (Ensaio 1), o reator anaeróbio foi operado em batelada, alimentado com 5 g DQO L-1 GB e 5 g DQO L-1 VC, na presença de cultura mista pertencente ao gênero Clostridium sp., a 37 °C, pH 5,5, headspace com N2, gerando 4,48 mmol H2 L-1 em 112 h de experimento, sendo consumidos 93,19 % de GB e 74,00 % de glicose. Um ensaio controle (Controle 1) foi montado com apenas 5 g DQO L-1 GB, não sendo verificada produção de H2. O efluente gerado no Ensaio 1 (200 mL) foi usado como substrato no 2º estágio (Ensaio 2) por um inóculo in natura identificado por consórcio de bactérias anaeróbias fermentativas e archaeas metanogênicas, no reator anaeróbio metanogênico (500 mL), headspace com N2, pH 7,0, a 37 °C, gerando 229,08 mmol CH4 L-1 em 624 h de operação. Além disso, 87,34 % da DQO e 93,75 % do metanol proveniente do GB foram consumidos. O efluente gerado pelo Controle 1 produziu apenas 40,58 mmol CH4 L-1 (Controle 2). Dessa forma, constatou-se que a codigestão elevou a geração de biogás, com consumos de resíduos orgânicos e tóxicos presentes no GB por meio dos sistemas integrados.

ABSTRACT The biodiesel production has grown and it gained prominence in the global energy scenario. As a result, its main co-product, crude glycerol (CG), has accompanied this increase, causing the formation of large stocks of this residue. A promising alternative for its reduction is the use by anaerobic biological processes aiming at the biogas production, as hydrogen (H2) as methane (CH4). It is known that the efficiency of this bioconversion increases through co-digestion with other organic waste. Thus, the objective of this study consisted in the co-digestion of CG, from the biodiesel production through waste cooking oils, with citrus vinasse (CV), in two sequential stages. In the 1st stage (Assay 1), the anaerobic reactor was operated in batch, fed with 5 g COD L-1 CG and 5 g COD L-1 CV, in the presence of a mixed culture belonging to the genus Clostridium sp., at 37 °C, pH 5.5, headspace with N2, generating 4.48 mmol H2 L-1 in 112 h of experiment, being consumed 93.19 % of CG and 74.00 % of glucose. A control assay (Control 1) was assembled with only 5 g COD L-1 CG, without H2 production. The effluent generated in Assay 1 (200 mL) was used as a substrate in the 2nd stage (Assay 2) by an inoculum in natura identified by a consortium of anaerobic bacteria and methanogenic archaea, in the anaerobic methanogenic reactor (500 mL), headspace with N2, pH 7.0, at 37 °C, generating 229.08 mmol CH4 L-1 in 624 h of operation. In addition, 87.34 % of COD and 93.75 % of methanol from CG were consumed. The effluent generated by Control 1 produced only 40.58 mmol CH4 L-1 (Control 2). Thus, it was found that co-digestion increased the biogas generation, with consumption of organic and toxic waste present in CG through integrated systems.

Psychometric properties of the EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index (WHOQOL-8) in a Brazilian sample

Objective: To test the psychometric properties of the EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index in a Brazilian sample. Methods: The sample consisted of 151 patients and 174 healthy controls (n=325). Several psychometric properties were tested. Results: Reliability showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.81). The measure showed good discriminant validity between patients and healthy controls (mean1 = 3.32, SD1 = 0.70; mean2 = 3.77, SD2 = 0.63, t = 6.12, p < 0.001). Convergent validity showed significant correlations (p < 0.001) between the EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index and all domains of the WHOQOL-Bref (overall r = 0.47; general health r = 0.54; physical r = 0.69; psychological r = 0.62; social relationship r = 0.55; environment r = 0.55) and between the EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index and the domains of the SF-36, except for the social domain (p = 0.38). On Rasch analysis of unidimensionality, general fit measures showed adequate performance. The EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index also showed good fit on confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (chi-square = 18.46, degrees of freedom [df] = 15; comparative fit index [CFI] = 0.99; root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.03; goodness of fit index [gfi] = 0.99; root mean square residual [RMR] = 0.03; p = 24). Conclusion: The EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index showed good psychometric properties. It is a reliable quality of life measure that can be used in Brazilian populations.

Abstract The use of the defatted baru almond (Dipteryx alata Vog.) prevents the production of waste residues after extraction of its oil (partially defatted baru flour), representing a process of interest from an environmental point of view. The aim of this study was to prepare oat cookies with functional properties, replacing 100% soy oil for baru oil and 30% wheat flour for partially defatted baru flour (baru cookie). Baru cookies presented a higher moisture (7.80%), probably due to the high content of dietary fiber (3.78%), resulting in a lower calorie content (457.46 kcal.100 g–1), compared to traditional oat cookies. Changing the formulation resulted in the enrichment of a number of microelements, including phosphorus (~ 197.90 mg.100 g–1) and iron (~ 21.56 mg.100 g–1). Baru oil increased the concentration of unsaturated fatty acids (~ 76.11%), consisting of approximately 50.37% monounsaturated (MUFA), and 25.74% polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The total phenolic compound content was approximately doubled in the baru cookie. As such, the baru cookie presents an interesting composition from a nutritional point of view, having a high protein and dietary fiber content, in addition to presenting substantial concentrations of iron and oleic acid, and may be used as part of a healthy diet.

RESUMO Manifestações orofaciais ocorrem com frequência nas doenças reumáticas e, comumente, representam sinais iniciais ou de atividade da doença que ainda são negligenciados na prática clínica. Entre as doenças reumáticas autoimunes com possíveis manifestações orais, incluem-se a artrite reumatoide (AR), miopatias inflamatórias (MI), esclerose sistêmica (ES), lúpus eritematoso sistêmico (LES), policondrite recidivante (PR) e síndrome de Sjögren (SS). Sinais e sintomas orofaciais como hipossalivação, xerostomia, disfunções temporomandibulares, lesões na mucosa bucal, doença periodontal, disfagia e disfonia podem ser a primeira expressão dessas doenças reumáticas. Esse artigo revisa as principais manifestações orofaciais das doenças reumáticas que podem ser de interesse do reumatologista, para diagnóstico e acompanhamento das doenças reumáticas autoimunes.

ABSTRACT Orofacial manifestations occur frequently in rheumatic diseases and usually represent early signs of disease or of its activity that are still neglected in clinical practice. Among the autoimmune rheumatic diseases with potential for oral manifestations, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), inflammatory myopathies (IM), systemic sclerosis (SSc), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), relapsing polychondritis (RP) and Sjögren's syndrome (SS) can be cited. Signs and symptoms such as oral hyposalivation, xerostomia, temporomandibular joint disorders, lesions of the oral mucosa, periodontal disease, dysphagia, and dysphonia may be the first expression of these rheumatic diseases. This article reviews the main orofacial manifestations of rheumatic diseases that may be of interest to the rheumatologist for diagnosis and monitoring of autoimmune rheumatic diseases.

Modified atmosphere is a method of food preservation that provides increased lifetime, decreases deterioration losses, and facilitates marketing. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of different plastic films in modifying the atmosphere around Eva apples to assure quality maintenance during postharvest storage. The fruits were cleaned and separated into three treatment groups: polypropylene, low density polyethylene, and high density polyethylene packing with a total of 5 fruits per package for each evaluation period. A group of control apples was not submitted to atmospheric modification. After the treatment, all fruits were stored at 0.5±0.5°C (cold storage) for up to 225 days. The analyses were performed at 45, 135, and 225 days after cold storage. Respiration, ethylene production, firmness, mass loss, total pectin, soluble pectin, soluble solids, total acidity, and epidermis background color of each treatment group were evaluated. The high density polyethylene film treatment did not show a decrease in ethylene production during storage and allowed the fruits to maintain a greater firmness and smaller percentage of mass loss during the study period. Moreover, the storage of the Eva apple cultivar under modified atmosphere allowed the preservation of quality for up to seven months.

Águas subterrâneas são fonte de água potável para muitas pessoas em todo o mundo, principalmente em áreas rurais. Por este motivo a qualidade destas águas é de importância fundamental. Inúmeros materiais tem sido identificados como contaminantes de águas subterrâneas. Apesar de ser este um precioso recurso natural, poucos professores tem conhecimento suficiente sobre o tema, compreendendo os diferentes conceitos envolvidos. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as percepções e o conhecimento sobre o assunto de futuros professores de ciências. 100 estudantes de licenciatura participaram da pesquisa e os resultados indicam que os participantes tem concepções insuficientes sobre os princípios de hidrologia, apesar da importância das águas subterrâneas para a saúde, economia e qualidade de visa. Ficou demonstrada a importância de melhorar o conhecimento de alunos e professores sobre conceitos relacionados a este tema.

Ground water is the source of drinking water for many people around the world, especially in rural areas. Inasmuch as ground water provides drinking water to so many people, the quality of ground water is of Paramount importance. A wide variety of materials have been identified as contaminants found in groundwater. Although clean, potable groundwater constitutes one of our most valuable resources, few science educators hold complete and appropriate understandings regarding the concept. In this study the knowledge and perceptions about groundwater of future science educator were assessed and data were collected from 100 science students. The results of this study indicate that the participants held inappropriate conceptions of hydrogeologic principles despite groundwater's importance to their health and economic well-being. It is important to improve conceptual understanding of ground water among science students and teachers.
