Catalyst performance is a relevant factor in biodiesel production because it can affect the efficiency of the process. This work provides a study of the performance of heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production derived from thermal-treated hydrocalumite-type compounds. This work aimed to synthesize and characterize hydrocalumite-type compounds intercalated with chloride and nitrate, evaluate the effect of thermal treatments at different temperatures (500, 600, and 750 °C) on these materials, and assess the performance of these materials as catalysts in the transesterification reactions using soybean oil and methanol. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrational spectroscopy (Fourier transform infrared with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR)), thermogravimetric analysis coupled to mass spectrometry (TGA DSC-MS), specific surface area, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of the transesterification reactions showed that the thermal-treated materials from the hydrocalumite intercalated with chloride presented high catalytic activity, among them, the thermal-treated material at 750 °C presented the highest conversion to methyl esters.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

Herein, the synthesis of nine novel glycerol-derived 4-alkyl-substituted 1,2,3-triazoles, using the CuI-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition reaction as the key step, is reported. The triazoles were characterized by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR 1H and 13C) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The nine prepared compounds were evaluated with regard to their phytotoxic, antiproliferative, and fungicidal activities. The fungicidal activity was assessed on Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, the causative agent of papaya anthracnose. All compounds presented high efficiency (comparable to the commercial fungicide tebuconazole) in inhibiting C. gloeosporioides sporulation. The phytotoxicity of the triazoles was assessed against Lactuca sativa. Germination was the less-affected parameter, whereas the most pronounced effects of the triazoles were on the germination speed index and root growth of the L. sativa seedlings. As indicators of antiproliferative activity, the mitotic index was evaluated along with chromosomal and nuclear alterations, all of which were influenced to different degrees by the triazoles. In addition, all derivatives demonstrated aneugenic and clastogenic actions in meristematic cells of L. sativa roots. Therefore, these 4-alkyl-substituted triazoles may represent a scaffold to be explored for the development of new fungicidal agents.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen which is a current global public health concern. There are currently no approved vaccines or antivirals against ZIKV infection. Taking into account that naphthoquinones have shown promising antiviral activity, the aim of this study was to describe the screening of two bis-naphthoquinones series against ZIKV. Twenty seven compounds were evaluated against ZIKV using Vero cells. The findings showed that among the compounds analyzed four were promising. Compound 3,3’-((2-nitrophenyl)methylene)bis(2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione) containing the nitro group at the ortho position showed the best selectivity index, followed by compound 3,3’-(4-chlorophenylmethylene)bis(naphthalene-1,2,4-triyl triacetate) with the chlorophenylmethylene radical. These results demonstrate that these bis-naphthoquinones are largely effective in inhibiting the replication of ZIKV.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the effects of 1% morphine instillation on clinical parameters, aqueous humor turbidity, and expression levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in rabbits with endotoxin-induced experimental uveitis. Methods: Twenty four New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four groups (n=6 each): control (CG), morphine (MG), naloxone (NG), and morphine-naloxone (MNG) groups. Under dissociative anesthesia, 0.1 mL of solution containing 0.2 µg of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) endotoxin from the Salmonella typhimurium cell wall was injected in the vitreous chamber. Clinical evaluations (conjunctical hyperemia, chemosis blepharospasm, and ocular discharge) and laser flaremetry were performed before (baseline), and 10 and 20 hours after induction of uveitis. Rabbits were subsequently euthanized and eyes were enucleated to quantify expression levels of TNF-α, IL-1 beta, PGE2, and MPO. Results: No significant differences in clinical parameters and flare values were observed between the study groups. TNF-α and IL-1 beta levels increased significantly in the CG, MG, NG, and MNG groups compared to baseline (P<0.05). Significant differences in PGE2 levels were observed between the MG and NMG groups (P<0.05). A trend toward increased MPO activity was observed in response to uveitis induction; however, this trend did not reach statistical significance (P>0.05). Conclusions: Morphine has no effect on clinical parameters, flare, or expression levels of inflammatory mediators in a rabbit model of uveitis induced by intravitreal injection of LPS.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is characterized by plasmocyte expansion in the bone marrow and the production of monoclonal immunoglobulin, causing bone destruction, renal failure, hematopoietic suppression and infections. Identification of clinical and laboratory factors in the diagnosis are important to predict survival. The Dürie/Salmon staging system, used for the disease, is based on the correlation of clinical and laboratory parameters on tumoral mass. Studies of the combination of β2 microglobulin and albumin resulted in a simple staging system, known as the International Staging System (ISS), which is currently being used. The objectives of this work were to analyze clinical and laboratory characteristics in the diagnosis of MM patients and a study of survival. A non-competitive cohort study was performed of 101 MM patients attended in the Hematology Service/Hospital das Clínicas-UFMG who were diagnosed in the period of April 1994 to October 2006.A descriptive analysis of the characteristics at diagnosis and a study of survival were made. The descriptive analysis was achieved using the Kaplan-Meier technique and the Log-Rank test utilized for a comparison of survival curves. The Cox regression test was used for multivariate analysis. The average age of the patients was 63 years, 47.5% were men and 52.5% women, with 50.6% being white, 33.3% black and 16.1% mulattos. The most common clinical manifestations were: bone pain (83.2%) and weakness (70.3%). Radiographies of the skeleton showed alterations in 83.8% of the cases. In respect to the Dürie/Salmon staging system, 63 (62.4%) patients were in stage III, 32 (31.7%) in stage II and 6 (5.9%) in stage I. Using the ISS classification, 22 (30.1%) patients were in stage III, 31 (42.5%) in stage II and 20 (27.4%) in stage I. Overall survival was 66.52 months with a follow-up of 20 months. In the univariate analysis, creatinine (p=0.006), hemoglobin (p=0.001), the Dürie/Salmon staging system (p=0.009) and ISS (p=0.014) were significant. In the multivariate analysis only hemoglobin (p=0.012) was correlated to survival. Most of the patients presented in the advanced stage at diagnosis with repercussions on survival.

Objective: The use of antiretroviral therapy in HlV-infected children has been a widely discussed issue. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of dual nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) regimens and three-drug regimens [2NRTI+ non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) or protease inhibitor (PI)] in a cohort of HlV-infected children. Methods: The study was carried out in a referral center for the management of infected children, which is affiliated with the School of Medicine of Universidade Federal de Mnas Gerais (UFMG). Those children whose antiretroviral therapy was implemented between January 1998 and December 2000 and who were followed until December 2001 were included in the study. Therapeutic failure or death was regarded as the endpoint in our analysis. Results: A total of 101 patients were assessed, 58 (57.4%) on dual therapy and 43 (42.6%) on triple therapy. No statistically significant difference was observed between the groups in terms of gender, age, CD4+ count and baseline viral load. The average duration of dual therapy was 26.3 months (95%CI 21.3-31.3) and that of triple therapy was 34.3 months (95%CI 29.2-39.5%). There was therapeutic failure in 33 (56.9%) patients on dual therapy and in 11 (25.6%) patients on triple therapy (log rank = 5.03; p = 0.025). The relative risk of therapeutic failure of the dual therapy was 2.2 times higher (95%CI 1.3-3.9). The percentage of initial CD4+ T cells was a predictor of risk for therapeutic failure (p = 0.001). Patients on triple therapy showed a more remarkable reduction in their viral load (p = 0.001). Conclusión: Triple therapy was efficient for a longer time period and showed better virologic response than dual therapy in this cohort of HlV-infected children. Therefore, triple therapy should be the treatment of choice.

This work deals with filler hybridization effects, by the addition of a nanoparticulate mineral filler (bentonite), on the mechanical performance of compression molded Polyurethane/sisal composites with 25 wt % fiber content. Composite tensile and impact properties were evaluated as a function of mineral filler content (0-10 wt %) and chemical modifications. Thermal aging effects onf tensile (sigma, E, epsilon) properties of selected composites were also ascertained. The mineral filler (Brasgel PA sodium bentonite) was employed in the following forms: a) as received; b) treated with a 0,6N HCl solution; c) chemically modified with dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (Dodigen) and d) chemically modified with cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (Cetremide). Our results show that bentonite addition increases the mechanical properties of PU/sisal composites and that best overall mechanical performances was achieved with addition of the hydrochloric acid trated mineral filler. Thermal aging for short times (up to 4 days) led to small increases in composite's elastic modulus na tensile strengths, which was attributed to post-curing of the matrix. Long thermal exposure (32 days) led to decreases in composite tensile properties (sigma, E, epsilon), which was attributed to oxidative degradation of both: matrix and sisal fibers. The most thermally resistant composite was the hybrid (PU/sisal-bentonite) whose mineral filler was chemically modified with Cetremide. DRX and SEM data indicate the hybrids with organofilized bentonites to be composed of micro and nanocomposite structures.

This work aimed to determine the population fluctuation of aphid species which occur in potato crop (Solanum tuberosum L.) at winter planting in two successive years (1997-1998). It was carried out in Alfenas region (South of Minas Gerais state), from July to September, 1997 (planting I) and August to September, 1998 (planting II). Plants were weekly sampled by collecting leaves with aphids. The species Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) were collected at planting I, both reaching peak population on the 2nd week of August, 1997; at planting II only M. persicae was collected, and reached its maximum number of individuals on the 3rd week of September, 1998. The population of M. persicae showed a correlation with rainfall and with the plant phenology (number of leaflets/leaf) in both potato winter planting. The absence of rain in the region contributed to regulate the number of aphids at potato winter planting II.
