ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to quantify the number and frequency of monocyte (MnOF) and multi-oocyte (MtOF) follicles in ovaries of bitches subjected to ovary salpingohysterectomy (OSH). Right and left ovaries of 38 bitches were collected after OSH, prepared, and a histological analysis was carried out. The ovaries were subjected to surface and deep histological cuts; the follicles were classified, and the number of follicles and cumulus oophorus complexes (COC) per follicle were quantified for each histological cut. MnOF and MtOF were found in all ovaries, at different developmental stages; primary follicles were grouped in the ovarian cortex, and follicles at other follicular stages presented a random distribution. MtOF containing two, three, four, or more COC were found in the ovaries of bitches, with a decreasing frequency trend, according to the number of COC in the MtOF. The effect of the age, number of estrus, estrus interval, and number of progenies per delivery was not significant for the number and frequency of MtOF in the ovaries of the bitches, whereas the size, number of pregnancies, use and number of contraceptive applications had some effect on the number and frequency of MtOF in the ovaries of the bitches.

This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, fractionation of nitrogen compounds and carbohydrates, digestibility parameters, gas production kinetics and ruminal fermentation of fruit seed cakes. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three fruit seed cakes (treatments) and four replications. The cakes were made of seeds of custard apple (Annona squamosa), soursop (Annona muricata) and passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), which were collected in a biodiesel plant. The passion fruit seed cake presented the highest content of dry matter, neutral detergent fibre crude protein (NDFcp), acid detergent fibre (ADF), lignin and total carbohydrates (P<0.05). The custard apple seed cake presented high proportions of crude protein, condensed tannins and digestible energy (P<0.05). The soursop seed cake presented higher values for ether extract and total digestible nutrients (P<0.05). For potential degradability, the authors detected a difference between the custard apple, soursop and passion fruit seed cakes. The total volume of gases was higher for custard apple and soursop seed cakes. Custard apple seed cake presented higher proportions of in vitro degradation parameters (P<0.05). Thus this cake could provide greater nutrient levels when supplied in ruminant diets, followed by soursop seed cake and passion fruit seed cake.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of using crambe cake in diets for sheep on intake and digestibility. The experimental design was a 4x4 Latin square with four animals, four periods and four treatments. The treatments were diets with 30% sorghum silage and 70% crambe cake (30:70) and a diet with 70% sorghum silage and 30% crambe cake (70:30) in lambs under the voluntary and controlled intake. The animals who fed a diet with a 30:70 ratio consumed more dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE) per kg/day, %BW/day and g/kgPV0,75. The ration provided higher digestibility of DM and NDF. The animals in the voluntary regime presented higher consumption of DM, CP, EE per kg/day, %BW/day and g/kgPV0,75. The cake crambe presented digestibility coefficient higher than sorghum silage, regardless of the regime intake. The 30:70 ration presented a difference in N intake and N absorbed. The cake crambe has high nutrient digestibility and acceptance by animals when associated with sorghum silage.

ABSTRACT Recent research reports the importance of preserving plants in Brazilian semiarid regions, in this context, the scientific literature has reported different pharmacological studies from plant extracts with an antifungal potential, coming from forest species that can contribute as a control and management strategy in the transmission of phytopathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of biotech treatments in controlling the transmission of Colletotrichum sp. in seeds of S. obtusifolium. In this study, 100 seeds were subjected to the following preventive treatments: fungicide Captan®, extract of Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. Ex. Tul., and biological control with Trichoderma spp. The biological control with Trichoderma spp. and the alternative control using C. ferrea extract provided a greater protection to seeds and seedlings of S. obtusifolium facing the transmissibility of Colletotrichum sp.The treatment based on plant extract is more efficient for this purpose only in large seeds and does not interfere on the germination percentage and speed. Therefore it is necessary to perform other studies with Trichoderma spp. and C. ferrea extract to test different doses of these products.

This study was conducted with the aim to determine the optimal level of protein replacement of cottonseed meal protein by sunflower cake in diets for Santa Inês lambs, through the evaluation of consumption, weight gain, feed conversion and morphometric measurements. Thirty Santa Inês lambs, bulls, with age and weight at the beginning of the experiment of 80 days and 21.45±2.16kg, respectively, were confined for 60 days. A completely randomized experimental design was used, where the animals were divided into 5 treatments with 6 replicates per treatment. For the treatments, the protein from the cottonseed meal was replaced by the protein of the sunflower cake (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80% of substitutions). For morphometric determinations, the following measurements were taken: pre-slaughter body length, leg length, leg perimeter, height of the dorsum; hip height; chest girth, hip width and chest width. Final weight, dry matter intake and feed conversion were not affected by the experimental diets, although the average daily gain was lower for diets with higher content of sunflower cake. For consumption parameters, there was a difference only in the consumption of ether extract in relation to metabolic weight (g/kg PV 0, 75), where lambs receiving diets with higher levels of sunflower cake ingested larger amounts of ether extract. Regarding the morphometric measurements, there was a linear decrease of the height of the dorsum and hip width with the inclusion of sunflower cake in the diet. The replacement of cottonseed meal protein by sunflower cake protein negatively affected the weight gain of Santa Inês lambs. However, it affected little or nothing the parameters of consumption and in vivo morphometric measurements.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the number of total and thermotolerant coliforms, coagulase-positive Staphylococcus, and the presence of bacteria of the genus Salmonella in the muscle, surface tissue, and gastrointestinal tract of fish, and in the pond water of fee-fishing establishments located in the Córrego Rico microwatershed in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Coagulase-positive Staphylococcus was not detected in any sample of pond water or fish. The most probable number (MPN) of total coliforms in fish ranged from 2.0 x 10 to > 1.1 x 104 NMP.100 mL-1, while in pond water it ranged from 4.2 x 104 to > 2.4 x 105 NMP.100 mL-1. The count of thermotolerant coliforms in fish ranged from < 3 to 5.1 x 103 NMP.g-1, while in pond water it ranged from 3.8 x 102 to 2.0 x 104 NMP.100 mL-1. There was no statistical difference (P > 0.05) among the studied populations of microorganisms in pond water, surface tissue and gastrointestinal tract, which reflects a relationship between the presence of microorganisms in the water and in the two tissues analyzed. Salmonella sp. was isolated in one sample of muscle and in two samples of gastrointestinal tract. The fish can be a vehicle for cross contamination, having the gastrointestinal tract and the surface tissue as a source of microorganisms for its muscles. Therefore, monitoring the water quality is important to ensure the production of fish with good quality.

To study the ingestive behavior of 36 young crossbred bulls in feedlot, 3 diets were evaluated: sorghum silage plus concentrate at 1.0% of the live weight, sugar cane plus concentrate at 1.0% or 1.2% of the live weight. The experimental period was of 100 days after 15 days for animal adaptation. The data were recorded during 24 h, divided in 4 intervals of observation, at 20, 35, 50 and 65 days after the beginning of the confinement with analysis of the time series every 15 minutes. Duration and frequency of feeding, rumination and idle, dry matter and neutral detergent fiber intake, feeding and rumination efficiency of dry matter and neutral detergent fiber and total chewing time, were evaluated. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) among the treatments for duration of feeding, rumination and idle, being the feeding efficiency higher for the animals fed with diets based on sorghum silage. The rumination efficiency did not differ between diets with sorghum silage and sugar cane with 1.2% of the concentrate. The feed intake was higher from 06:15 to 18:00 h and the animals spent more time ruminating (144.75±19.55 min) from 00:15 to 06:00 h. The duration of feeding and rumination are not a good indication of the real intake.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of stereotactic surgery on daily activities of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. METHOD: Thirty patients with idiopathic PD were evaluated before surgery and one, three, six and twelve months after surgery. Patients were evaluated with the UPDRS - part II (Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale) and the Schwab & England scales. Nine of the patients had also been evaluated after twenty four months. RESULTS: We performed nine posteroventral pallidotomies (PVP), two on the left hemisphere and seven on the right; 17 ventrolateral thalamotomies (VLT), 12 on the left and five on the right; two VLT on the left associated with PVP on the right at the same surgical procedure. The mean "off" phase scores of Schwab & England scale were: 60.6 before surgery, 74 after the first, 76.6 after the third, 75.6 after the sixth, 72.3 after the twelfth and 71.1 after the twenty fourth months after surgery. The mean "off" phase scores of UPDRS - part II scale were: 21 before surgery, 12.3 after the first, 14.7 after the third, 15.27 after the sixth, 17.1 after the twelfth and 17.5 after the twenty fourth months after surgery. CONCLUSION: VTL and PVP are useful procedures to improve daily living activities of the PD patients and the best results are seen by six months after surgery.
