ABSTRACT Purpose To identify orofacial myofunctional complaints and sleep-disordered breathing and correlate them with sleep habits in childhood. Methods The study included 71 parents/guardians of public school children aged 6 to 11 years. They answered a form with semi-structured medical history questions and the Nordic Orofacial Test-Screening - interview, the Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea Screening Tool Questionnaire, and the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire - all of them in their Portuguese/Brazilian versions in an online format. Statistical analyses used Spearman’s correlation, setting the significance level at 5%. Results There were 29 female children (40.8%) and 42 male ones (59.2%), with a mean age of 8.52 years. The study found orofacial myofunctional complaints related to breathing functions (35.2%), chewing and swallowing (32.4%), and deleterious habits (33.8%). All children were at a low risk of sleep-disordered breathing. As for sleep habits, 23 children (32.39%) had a lower total score, whereas 48 children (67.61%) exceeded 41 points. Conclusion There was a correlation between the risk of sleep-disordered breathing in children with complaints of orofacial myofunctional disorders and poor sleep quality/habits.

RESUMO Objetivo Identificar e correlacionar as queixas de alterações miofuncionais orofaciais e de risco para distúrbios respiratórios do sono com hábitos de sono na infância. Método Participaram 71 pais ou responsáveis de crianças de 6 a 11 anos, matriculadas em uma escola pública. Foi aplicado um formulário com questões semiestruturadas/anamnese e os protocolos Nordic Orofacial Test-Screening - entrevista, Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea Screening Tool Questionnaire, e Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire - todos em suas versões em português/Brasil no formato online. Para a análise estatística, realizou-se o teste de correlação de Spearman, considerando o nível de significância de 5%. Resultados 29 crianças eram do sexo feminino (40,8%) e 42 do sexo masculino (59,2%), com média de idade de 8,52 anos. As queixas miofuncionais orofaciais encontradas foram relacionadas às funções de respiração (35,2%), mastigação e deglutição (32,4%) e hábitos deletérios (33,8%). Todas as crianças apresentaram um baixo risco para distúrbios respiratórios do sono e quanto aos hábitos de sono, 23 crianças (32,39%) apresentaram uma somatória menor, enquanto que 48 crianças (67,61%) ultrapassaram 41 pontos. Conclusão Houve correlação entre risco para distúrbios respiratórios do sono em crianças com as queixas de alterações miofuncionais orofaciais e com a baixa qualidade/maus hábitos de sono.

ABSTRACT Purpose To assess the effect of an virtual speech-language orientation program, as well as the prevention of orofacial myofunctional alterations. Methods Fifty-five volunteer residents aged between 18 and 50 years of age residents of Federal District participated in the study, 14 men and 41 women with an average of 28. The orientation program was divided into five stages (1) The preparation of material to be used in the orientation program, (2) The completion of a semi-structured questionnaire made available through Google Forms, (3) Completion of a pre-orientation program questionnaire, (4) utilization of the speech therapy orientation program, (5) Completion of the post-orientation program questionnaire. To analyze the results the McNemar statistical test was used considering the absolute frequency (N), enabling comparison through a paired sample. The significance level adopted was 5%. Results Statistically significant differences were seen in 10 of the 19 questions asked in the pre and post-orientation program questionnaires, proving the effect of the orientation program and improvement in participants’ knowledge. In addition the participants were satisfied with the program and the content. Conclusion The orientation program focused on health promotion and prevention of orofacial myofunctional alterations and combined with telehealth brought significant changes to the reality of the participants, favoring the quality of life of these individuals and changing their reality.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar o efeito de um programa de orientação fonoaudiológica virtual, bem como prevenir alterações miofuncionais orofaciais. Método Participaram deste estudo 55 voluntários moradores do Distrito Federal com idade entre 18 e 50 anos, sendo 14 homens e 41 mulheres, com idade média de 28 anos. O programa de orientação proposto foi dividido em cinco etapas: 1) elaboração dos materiais a serem utilizados no programa de orientação; 2) preenchimento de questionário semiestruturado por meio da plataforma Google Forms; 3) aplicação do questionário pré-programa de orientação; 4) realização do programa de orientação fonoaudiológica; 5) preenchimento do questionário pós-programa de orientação. Para a análise dos resultados utilizou-se o teste estatístico McNemar considerando a frequência absoluta (N), possibilitando a comparação por meio de amostra pareada. O nível de significância adotado foi de 5%. Resultados Observou-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas em 10 das 19 questões propostas nos questionários pré e pós-programa de orientação, evidenciando o efeito da orientação proposta e aquisição de conhecimentos por parte dos voluntários. Além disso, os participantes demonstraram satisfação em relação ao programa e aos conteúdos disseminados. Conclusão O programa de orientação com enfoque na promoção da saúde e prevenção de alterações miofuncionais orofaciais aliado à telessaúde trouxe mudanças significativas para a realidade dos participantes, favorecendo a qualidade de vida desses indivíduos e tornando-os agentes transformadores de realidade.

ABSTRACT Purpose: this study aimed at assessing the legibility, reliability, usability and coverage of websites on cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) in Brazilian Portuguese and providing a global comparison. Methods: in order to evaluate the obtained data, four protocols were used, i.e., the Website Coverage Protocol, the legibility (by means of the COH METRIX PORT), the reliability (Discern Protocol), and the usability (by means of the System Usability Scale). Results: 98 websites were included with average legibility scoring of 31.6±11.7, rated as a hard readability level. Coverage average scoring was 19.9±3.79 from a total of 35 points. As for reliability, average scoring was 43.2±6.51 points, rated as acceptable. The usability scoring was 24.8±2.18 points, rated as the worst imaginable one. Conclusion: therefore, the assessed Brazilian websites on CL/P were rated difficult for legibility, requiring high-school level of education, restricted coverage and acceptable reliability, in addition to the low usability. The results were similar to those of websites from other countries, except for the legibility aspect, which was lower for Brazilian websites.

RESUMO Objetivo Caracterizar a função mastigatória de idosos e comparar o total de tempo e golpes mastigatórios e o escore mastigatório total entre idosos e adultos jovens. Método Trata-se de um estudo observacional, transversal e analítico. Um total de 50 indivíduos participaram do estudo, 25 idosos (idade média de 66 anos) e 25 adultos jovens (idade média de 22 anos). A avaliação da função mastigatória foi realizada por meio da filmagem padronizada da mastigação habitual de um biscoito maisena. O tipo mastigatório (bilateral alternado, bilateral simultâneo, unilateral preferencial, crônica e anterior), o escore mastigatório, o total do tempo mastigatório e o número total de golpes mastigatórios foram verificados e comparados entre os idosos e os adultos jovens. Resultados O padrão mastigatório predominante nos adultos jovens foi a mastigação bilateral alternada (52%), enquanto que nos idosos predominou a mastigação bilateral simultânea (48%). O uso de prótese dentária apresentou influência significativa no escore total da mastigação; os idosos apresentaram maior tempo mastigatório e maior quantidade de golpes mastigatórios; contudo, o escore total da mastigação foi menor para este grupo. Conclusão O uso de prótese dentária apresenta influência significativa na função mastigatória. Quando comparados aos jovens, idosos apresentam maior quantidade de tempo e golpes mastigatórios e menor escore total da mastigação.

ABSTRACT Purpose To characterize the masticatory function of the elderly and to compare total amount of time, masticatory strokes and total mastication score among the elderly and young adults. Methods It is an observational, cross-sectional and analytical study. A total of 50 individuals participated, 25 elderly (mean age 66 years) and 25 young adults (mean age 22 years). The evaluation of mastication was performed by standardized filming of the usual mastication of a wheat flour biscuit. The masticatory type (alternated bilateral, simultaneous bilateral, preferential unilateral, chronic and anterior), masticatory score, total masticatory time and the total number of masticatory strokes were verified and compared between the elderly and young adults. Results The predominant masticatory pattern in the young adults was the alternated bilateral mastication (52%), while, in the elderly, the simultaneous bilateral mastication predominated (48%). The use of dental prostheses had a significant influence on the total mastication score; elderly presented greater masticatory time and greater amount of masticatory strokes; however, the total masticatory score was lower for this group. Conclusion The use of dental prosthesis has a significant influence on masticatory function. When compared to young adults, the elderly had a greater amount of time and masticatory strokes and a lower total mastication score.

RESUMO A terapia intensiva é uma alternativa para acelerar o processo terapêutico de indivíduos com fissura labiopalatina. O objetivo desse estudo foi descrever, aplicar um programa de terapia intensiva e comparar a evolução antes e após o programa de fonoterapia de uma criança com fissura transforame incisivo unilateral direita operada e insuficiência velofaríngea em uso de prótese de palato obturadora. Foram realizadas 60 sessões de terapia, durante 4 semanas. Antes e após, aplicou-se anamnese, avaliação da fala e nasofibroscopia. Como resultado, a paciente apresentou adequação da ressonância e da inteligibilidade de fala, diminuição dos distúrbios obrigatórios e das articulações compensatórias após terapia intensiva com prótese de palato obturadora; e redução do gap velofaríngeo após a terapia intensiva com e sem o uso da prótese. Concluiu-se que a fonoterapia intensiva proporcionou evolução do caso.

ABSTRACT Intensive therapy is an alternative to accelerate the therapeutic process of individuals with cleft lip and palate. The purpose of this study is to describe an intensive speech therapy program and compare the results before and after the program on a child with previously operated right unilateral cleft lip and palate and velopharyngeal insufficiency, using a speech bulb. Sixty therapy sessions were carried out over a 4-week period. Before and after, anamnesis, speech assessment and evaluation of the velopharyngeal function with nasofibroscopy, were performed. The patient presented with adequate resonance and speech intelligibility, reduction of obligatory disorders and compensatory articulations, after intensive therapy with the speech bulb and reduction of velopharyngeal gap, after intensive therapy with and without the speech bulb. Progress was achieved with the intensive speech therapy.

RESUMO Objetivo elaborar um website de cunho educacional sobre fissura labiopalatina para profissionais e estudantes da área da saúde. Métodos trata-se de um estudo qualitativo, exploratório, estruturado a partir da proposta de design instrucional, composta por quatro fases: análise e planejamento (busca nas bases científicas), modelagem (estruturação com o conteúdo, ilustrações e questionário), avaliação (por especialistas que atuam na área) e implementação (disponibilização do website). Resultados na fase de análise e planejamento foram encontrados 408 artigos para estruturar os tópicos do website. Na modelagem, o conteúdo foi dividido em 7 seções, criadas 16 imagens estáticas e um questionário avaliativo. Na fase de avaliação, participaram 10 fonoaudiólogas especialistas que sugeriram a manutenção de 7 seções no website. Todas as avaliações com sugestões de modificações que tiveram índice de concordância abaixo de 90% foram atendidas, tanto no conteúdo, como no questionário. Após, o website foi reformulado, assim como o questionário, para futura avaliação dos usuários. O website está disponibilizado em www.fissuralabiopalatina.unb.br. Conclusão por meio da sistemática do design instrucional, o website sobre fissuras labiopalatina foi constituído para a orientação de estudantes, profissionais da área da saúde e população em geral.

ABSTRACT Purpose to create an educational website about cleft lip and palate for healthcare professionals and students. Methods a qualitative and exploratory study structured from a design proposal consisting of the following four phases: analysis and planning (review of scientific data), modeling (structuring with content and illustrations), evaluation (by experts working in the area) and final implementation (website availability). Results in the analysis and planning phase, 408 articles were used to structure the website's topics. In the modeling phase, the content was divided into 7 sections, 16 static images and an evaluative questionnaire were created. In the evaluation phase 10 specialized speech-language pathologists participated and suggested maintaining 7 sections on the website. All evaluations with suggestions for modifications that had an agreement index below 90% were met, both in content and in the questionnaire. Afterward, the website and questionnaire were updated for future user evaluation. The website is available at www.fissuralabiopalatina.unb.br. Conclusion we concluded that through systematic instructional design the website about cleft lip and palate was created for the orientating students, healthcare professionals and the public alike.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar o conhecimento dos professores da educação infantil e ensino fundamental I a respeito da respiração oral, assim como verificar a ampliação do conhecimento dos professores sobre o tema, após a aplicação do programa de orientação fonoaudiológica. Métodos A amostra foi composta por 150 professores de escolas públicas e particulares. A promoção do conhecimento sobre a respiração oral foi realizada por meio do Programa de Orientação Fonoaudiológica, que abordou sobre a fisiologia da respiração, as causas e as consequências da respiração oral e os profissionais envolvidos no tratamento. Antes e após o programa, foram aplicados questionários semiestruturados, compostos por questões objetivas e discursivas a respeito das causas e consequências da respiração oral. Para a análise estatística entre os questionários pré e pós-programa, foi utilizado o teste McNemar. A comparação entre a média geral das respostas corretas foi realizada por meio do teste t-Student. Todas as diferenças foram consideradas estatisticamente significativas para um nível de significância de 5%. Resultados Observaram-se diferenças estatísticas (p<0,05) em todas as questões dos questionários pré e pós-programa de orientação. Conclusão Os professores apresentaram conhecimento prévio sobre a respiração oral, porém, o Programa de Orientação Fonoaudiológica mostrou-se eficaz e promoveu a ampliação do conhecimento sobre o tema.

ABSTRACT Purpose To ascertain primary and secondary school teachers knowledge of mouth breathing, as well as to gauge teachers improvements in knowledge of the subject area after the speech therapy guidance program. Methods 150 teachers from both public and private schools participated in the program. The promotion of information about mouth breathing was carried out as part of the Speech Therapy Program, which addressed areas such as the physiology of breathing, causes and consequences of mouth breathing and the professionals involved in the treatment. Before and after the program semi-structured questionnaires were given out, the questionnaires contained objective and discursive questions about the causes and consequences of mouth breathing. The McNemar test was used for statistical analysis of the pre and post program questionnaires. The comparison between the general average of correct answers was ascertained by using the t-Student test. All differences were considered statistically significant at a significance level of 5%. Results Statistical differences (p<0.05) were found in all questions in the pre and post-orientation program questionnaires. Conclusion The teachers showed they had some previous knowledge about mouth breathing, however the Speech Therapy Orientation Program proved to be effective and resulted in the teachers showing a greatly increased knowledge about the subject.

RESUMO Objetivo Obter valores de nasalância de jovens adultos, falantes do português brasileiro dos estados de São Paulo e Minas Gerais, para investigar a existência de fatores influenciadores, como variação dialetal e gênero. Método Foi avaliada a nasalidade de 36 indivíduos, 20 oriundos do Estado de São Paulo (idade média: 23 anos) e 16 de Minas Gerais (idade média: 24 anos), de ambos os gêneros, pelo Nasômetro II modelo 6400 (KayPENTAX®) durante a leitura de três textos (nasal1, nasal2 e oral). A comparação dos valores de nasalância entre os grupos foi feita pelo teste t de Student não pareado, considerando dois grupos experimentais. Resultados Os valores de nasalância encontrados nas populações paulista e mineira foram, respectivamente, 52,7% e 48,8% para o texto nasal1; 49,6% e 49,9% para o texto nasal2 e 14,3% e 9,8% para o texto oral. Na análise comparativa da média dos valores, verificou-se diferença no texto oral (p=0,03), sendo a nasalância dos paulistas maior que a dos mineiros, já o fator gênero não apresentou diferença significativa. Conclusão Ambas as populações apresentaram valores de nasalância dentro dos padrões de normalidade, porém a nasalância dos mineiros foi menor que a dos paulistas. O fator gênero não mostrou influência sobre esses valores, ainda que, no texto nasal2, as mulheres mineiras mostraram uma tendência de maior valor de nasalância que os homens mineiros. Nosso estudo contribui para o conhecimento dos valores de referência para populações distintas, falantes do português brasileiro, contudo, deve ser interpretado com ponderação, visto o número reduzido da amostra.

ABSTRACT Purpose To measure the nasalance scores of Brazilian Portuguese-speaking young adults from the states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais in order to investigate whether dialect variations and gender affect these scores. Methods Nasalance was assessed in 36 individuals: 20 native residents of Sao Paulo state (mean age=23 y.o.) and 16 native residents of Minas Gerais state (mean age=24 y.o.), following the same criteria. Nasalance measures were taken using the Nasometer II 6400 (KayPentax) device based on the reading of three texts (nasal-1, nasal-2, and oral). Intergroup nasalance scores were compared using the unpaired Student’s t test considering two experimental groups. Results The nasalance scores in individuals from the states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais were 52.7% and 48.8% for the nasal-1 text, 49.6% and 49.9% for the nasal-2 text, and 14.3% and 9.8% for the oral text, respectively. Statistical analysis comparing the mean nasalance scores in both groups showed significant difference (p=0.03) only for the oral text, in which individuals from Sao Paulo state presented higher scores. Conclusion Although nasalance scores were lower in individuals from Minas Gerais state compared with those of individuals from Sao Paulo state, both groups presented values within the normal range. The variable gender was not relevant in the nasalance assessment; however, a tendency for higher scores was observed in women compared with men from Minas Gerais state in the same group in the reading of the nasal-2 text. This study contributes to the knowledge of nasalance reference scores for two different populations of Brazilian Portuguese speakers; however, the results herein reported should be interpreted with caution due to the small study sample size.

RESUMO Introdução A força de mordida é influenciada pela condição oclusal. Em crianças com mordida cruzada posterior, os resultados são controversos. Objetivo Investigar a influência da mordida cruzada posterior na força isométrica máxima de mordida, em crianças na fase de dentição mista. Métodos Participaram deste estudo transversal 32 crianças, sendo 21 do grupo mordida cruzada posterior (10 meninas e 11 meninos, média de idade 9,2 anos) e 11 do grupo controle, sem alterações oclusais (seis meninas, cinco meninos, média de idade 9,3 anos). As crianças foram avaliadas por um ortodontista, para diagnóstico oclusal e caracterização dos grupos, pela equipe de otorrinolaringologia, para avaliação do quadro respiratório, e por uma fonoaudióloga. O dinamômetro foi posicionado na região dos molares e as crianças foram instruídas a mordê-lo o mais forte possível, por três vezes, alternadamente. Para análise dos dados foi utilizado o teste t de Student para amostras independentes e dependentes. O nível de significância estabelecido foi de 5%. Resultados Na comparação entre os grupos mordida cruzada e controle não foi encontrada diferença significativa e no grupo mordida cruzada, não houve diferença entre o lado cruzado e o não cruzado. Conclusão A presença de mordida cruzada posterior não esteve relacionada à força de mordida em crianças na fase de dentição mista.

ABSTRACT Introduction The bite force is influenced by the occlusal condition. In children with posterior crossbite the results are controversial. Purpose To investigate the influence of posterior crossbite in maximal isometric bite force (MIBF) in children with mixed dentition. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 32 children participated, 21 of them belonging to the posterior cross-bite group (10 girls and 11 boys, mean age 9.2 years) and 11 to the control group (6 girls, 5 boys, mean age 9.3 years). The children were evaluated by an orthodontist for occlusal diagnosis and characterization of the groups, by otorhinolaryngologists for evaluation of respiratory symptoms and by a speech therapist to identify the clinical and MIBF myofunctional orofacial condition. The dynamometer was placed in the molar region and the children were instructed to bite it as hard as possible three times alternately. For data analysis, Student’s t-test for independent samples was used. The level of significance was set at 5%. Results While comparing the groups crossbite vs. control, there was no significantly difference; also, among only children belonging to the crossbite group, there was no difference between the sides (crossed bite vs. Noncrossed one). Conclusion The presence of posterior crossbite did not influence the maximal isometric bite force in children with mixed dentition.

OBJETIVO: Verificar se o número de golpes e o tempo mastigatório são influenciados pela deformidade dentofacial, na mastigação habitual livre. MÉTODOS: Participaram 15 pacientes com deformidade dentofacial classe II (GII), 15 com classe III (GIII) e 15 indivíduos sem a deformidade (GC). Foi analisada a mastigação habitual livre de um biscoito de maisena, considerando o tempo e o número de golpes mastigatórios apresentados durante duas mastigações. A contagem dos golpes foi feita considerando os movimentos mandibulares de abertura e fechamento da mandíbula. O tempo para o consumo de cada mordida do alimento foi investigado por meio de um cronômetro digital, acionado após a colocação do alimento na cavidade oral e paralisado no momento da deglutição final de cada porção. RESULTADOS: Não houve diferenças entre os grupos, tanto para a variável referente ao número de golpes, quanto para a relacionada ao tempo. Entretanto, quanto ao número de golpes, observou-se que os grupos GC e GII apresentaram uma concordância significativa entre a primeira e a segunda situação de mastigação, o que não ocorreu com o GIII. Na análise do tempo, houve uma concordância significativa no GC entre a primeira e a segunda situação de mastigação; o GII apresentou uma concordância razoável entre as duas situações de mastigação e o GIII apresentou discordância entre as duas mastigações. CONCLUSÃO: As deformidades dentofaciais não influenciam no número de golpes mastigatórios e no tempo da mastigação. Entretanto, os indivíduos classe III não apresentam uma uniformidade nesses aspectos.

PURPOSE: To verify whether the number of chewing strokes and the chewing time are influenced by dentofacial deformities in habitual free mastication. METHODS: Participants were 15 patients with diagnosis of class II dentofacial deformity (GII), 15 with class III (GIII), and 15 healthy control individuals with no deformity (CG). Free habitual mastication of a cornstarch cookie was analyzed, considering the number of chewing strokes and the time needed to complete two mastications. Strokes were counted by considering the opening and closing movements of the mandible. The time needed to consume each bite was determined using a digital chronometer, started after the placement of the food in the oral cavity and stopped when each portion was swallowed. RESULTS: There were no differences between groups regarding both the number of strokes and the chewing time. However, with regards to the number of strokes, CG and GII presented a significant concordance between the first and the second chewing situation, which was not observed in GIII. The analysis of time showed significant concordance between the first and second chewing situation in CG, reasonable concordance in GII, and discordance in GIII. CONCLUSION: Dentofacial deformities do not influence the number of chewing strokes or the chewing time. However, class III individuals do not show uniformity regarding these aspects.

OBJETIVO: este estudo investiga a diferença entre grupos com deformidade dentofacial (padrão classe II e classe III), em relação à preferência mastigatória referida e inclinação de cabeça durante a mastigação, assim como predomínio intra-grupo de cada um desses aspectos, comparativamente a um grupo controle. MÉTODOS: participaram deste estudo, voluntariamente, 25 pacientes (entre 18 e 35 anos). Doze pacientes com diagnóstico de deformidade dentofacial classe II e 13 pacientes com o diagnóstico de classe III esquelética e 10 voluntários, com equivalência em sexo e idade ao grupo de deformidade, formando o grupo controle. Os voluntários da pesquisa foram questionados sobre a existência de um lado de preferência mastigatória. Em seguida foram filmados durante a mastigação habitual de um biscoito maizena e através das imagens captadas, a postura de cabeça pôde ser analisada. RESULTADOS: não houve diferença entre os grupos em relação à preferência mastigatória referida, entretanto os grupos com deformidades dentofaciais apresentaram predomínio significativo de preferência mastigatória referida. Os grupos com deformidade dentofacial apresentaram maior predomínio de inclinação de cabeça durante a mastigação quando comparados ao grupo controle. CONCLUSÃO: indivíduos com deformidade dentofacial podem apresentar uma preferência mastigatória e alteração de postura de cabeça durante a mastigação.

PURPOSE: the study was conducted in order to investigate the difference among groups with class II and class III dentofacial deformities regarding reported chewing side preference and head inclination during chewing and to determine the intra-group predominance for these features when compared to a control group. METHODS: twenty-five volunteers aged from 15 to 34 years took part in the study, 12 of them with a diagnosis of class II dentofacial deformity, 13 with class III dentofacial deformity, and 10 control volunteers aged from 18 to 32 years matched for sex and age to the groups with deformity. The subjects were questioned on the presence of a chewing side preference and were recorded during habitual chewing of a cornstarch cookie for analyzing head posture through the images. RESULTS: there was no difference among the groups regarding reported chewing side preference, although the groups with dentofacial deformities had a significant predominance of reported chewing side preference. The groups with dentofacial deformities showed a greater predominance of head inclination during chewing when compared to the control. CONCLUSION: individuals with dentofacial deformities may show a chewing side preference and changes in head posture during chewing.
