Abstract Trait-based approaches have gained prominence in assessing the relationships between benthic diversity, habitat structure, and functioning in marine ecosystems. We reviewed the popular trait-based approaches currently used to evaluate the connections between macrobenthic communities and marine soft sediments. We examined techniques mainly based on response traits (i.e., that reflect animal responses to the environment), including benthic quality indices, metrics of community functional diversity, and biological trait analysis (BTA). We also discussed approaches focused on effect traits (i.e., reflecting the impact of animals on the environment). These approaches also use functional diversity indices and BTA, but specific indices such as community bioturbation potential (BPc) and community bioirrigation potential (BIPc) enable a more direct assessment of the impacts of macrobenthic communities on soft sediment habitats. We highlight the advantages and limitations of these techniques and discuss the need for standardized protocols and improved data collection methods. Despite their limitations, trait-based techniques are valuable tools for marine ecologists because they are closely related to ecosystem functioning and can be used for investigating many hypotheses of animal-sediment relationships in marine ecosystems.

Abstract: Aim We investigated the hypothesis that flood decreases the taxonomic and functional beta diversity of Chironomidae (Diptera) larvae among floodplain lakes, causing biotic homogenization. Methods We collected benthic samples using a modified Petersen grab in 18 lakes in a flood period (March 2011) and a drought period (September 2011) in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. We compared the taxonomic and functional beta diversity of Chironomidae among lakes in flood and drought periods using a multivariate dispersion analysis (PERMDISP). Results We found similar taxonomic and functional beta diversity of the Chironomidae between hydrological periods. Conclusions We did not find evidence of biotic homogenization due to flood pulse. Our findings suggest other mechanisms besides increasing connectivity and environmental similarity due to flood pulse that may structure the benthic community, such as variation in the identity of flood-tolerant morphospecies across lakes.

Resumo: Objetivo Nós investigamos a hipótese que a cheia reduz a diversidade beta taxonômica e funcional de larvas de Chironomidae (Diptera) em lagoas de inundação causando homogeneização biótica. Métodos Coletamos amostras bentônicas usando uma draga do tipo Petersen modificado em 18 lagoas em um período de cheia (março de 2011) e um período de seca (setembro de 2011) na planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. Nós comparamos a diversidade beta taxonômica e funcional nos períodos de cheia e de seca usando uma análise de dispersão multivariada (PERMDISP). Resultados Nós encontramos que a diversidade beta de Chironomidae foi similar entre os períodos hidrológicos. Conclusões Nós não encontramos evidência de homogeneização biótica devido à cheia. Nossos resultados sugerem outros mecanismos além do aumento da conectividade e da similaridade ambiental devido ao pulso de inundação estruturam a comunidade bentônica, tais como a variação na identidade das espécies tolerantes à cheia entre as lagoas.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo apresentar um levantamento das espécies de Oligochaeta em três regiões diferentes do estado do Mato Grosso do Sul (Baía, Ivinhema e Negro) em diversos ambientes (rios, lagoas, canais de ligação). Foram registradas 41 espécies de Oligochaeta, distribuídas em 5 famílias (Narapidae, Haplotaxidae, Opistocystidae, Alluroididae e Naididae). O estudo mostrou a riqueza de Oligochaeta na região do rio Negro em relação às regiões mais degradadas pela ação humana.

ABSTRACT This study aimed a survey of Oligochaeta species in three different regions of Mato Grosso do Sul state (Baía, Ivinhema and Negro) in diverse environments (rivers, lakes, connecting channels). We recorded 41 Oligochaeta species, distributed in five families (Narapidae, Haplotaxidae, Opistocystidae, Alluroididae, and Naididae). The study showed Oligochaeta richness in river Negro regions in relation of regions degraded by human action.

Resumo Objetivo Planícies de inundação estão entre os sistemas biológicos mais diversos do mundo, onde o regime hidrológico é reconhecido como crucial para estruturar as comunidades aquáticas. Nós predizemos que i) a estrutura da metacomunidade bentônica é aninhada na seca e aleatória na cheia de uma planície de inundação Neotropical. Nós esperamos encontrar ii) uma homogeneização ambiental durante a inundação, a qual desestrutura o padrão aninhado. Além disso, identificamos áreas de maior riqueza de invertebrados bentônicos sob alta heterogeneidade de uma planície de inundação Neotropical, e caracterizamos tais locais por tipo de ambiente e sistema fluvial. Métodos Nós amostramos 36 locais, e analisamos a estrutura da comunidade bentônica através do índice de aninhamento NODF. A heterogeneidade ambiental foi avaliada através de testes de homogeneidade de dispersões multivariadas (PERMDISP) separadamente para os períodos de cheia e seca. Resultados A comunidade bentônica seguiu uma distribuição aninhada em ambos os períodos hidrológicos. As maiores riquezas de táxons foram encontradas nas lagoas pequenas e não conectadas do sistema fluvial do rio Paraná e em alguns rios e canais secundários, independentemente do sistema fluvial. Chironomidae, Oligochaeta e Ostracoda foram os táxons mais frequentes, registrados em todos os ambientes. A variabilidade ambiental foi menor durante a cheia. Conclusões A distribuição aninhada é um padrão consistente para esta metacomunidade bentônica, pois sua distribuição não foi desestruturada mesmo sob condições de homogeneização limnológica e aumento da conectividade dos ambientes promovidos pela cheia. Nós também encontramos que locais com alta riqueza de espécies foram distribuídos tanto entre ambientes lênticos quanto lóticos pertencentes aos três sistemas fluviais. Os resultados demonstram a importância da planície de inundação como um todo, onde a conservação de seus diferentes ambientes mantém a riqueza da comunidade bentônica ao longo do tempo.

Abstract Aim Floodplains are among the most biologically diverse systems in the world, where hydrological regime is recognized as crucial to structure aquatic communities. We predicted that i) structure of benthic metacommunity is nested in the drought and random in the flood season in a Neotropical floodplain. We expected to find ii) environmental homogenization during the flood season which may disrupt the nested pattern. Moreover, we identified habitats of high taxa richness of benthic invertebrates and characterized them by habitat type and fluvial systems. Methods We sampled benthic invertebrates from 36 habitats in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. We tested nestedness using NODF index and evaluated the environmental variability using the multivariate homogeneity of group dispersions (PERMDISP), separately for flood and drought periods. Results The environmental variability was lower during the flood. We found a nested distribution among benthic invertebrates in both flood and drought periods. The highest species richness values were recorded in small and unconnected lakes from Paraná fluvial system and some rivers and secondary channels, independent of the fluvial system. Chironomidae, Oligochaeta and Ostracoda were the most frequent taxa and were recorded in all habitats. Conclusion The nested distribution of benthic invertebrates is a consistent pattern for this metacommunity because its distribution was not disrupted by floods that homogenize limnological conditions and increase the connectivity among habitats. We also found that habitats with high taxa richness were both lotic and lentic in the three fluvial systems. Our findings emphasize that different habitats in different subsystems sustains the richness of the benthic invertebrates metacommunity in the Upper Paraná River floodplain over time.

O Parque Nacional de Ilha Grande (Paraná, Brasil) é localizado no Alto Rio Paraná e apresenta características típicas de uma planície de inundação. Essa área de proteção ambiental inclui uma heterogeneidade de ambientes lacustres, dentre estes lagoas conectadas e não conectadas ao rio Paraná. Os enormes potenciais de diversidade tanto de flora quanto de fauna são ainda pouco conhecidos para o local, como para os invertebrados bentônicos, e dentre eles, os moluscos bivalves. A composição granulométrica das lagoas foi constituída basicamente de sedimentos mais finos, como lama e areia muito fina, e a matéria orgânica composta predominantemente por partículas finas. Também observamos diferenças espaciais nos fatores limnológicos, separando as lagoas situadas dentro da ilha do parque, das contidas na margem esquerda do rio Paraná. Esses dados demonstraram a importância dos fatores físicos como composição da textura granulométrica, matéria orgânica e bancos de macrófitas para o estabelecimento dos bivalves nesses ambientes. Registramos bivalves de Pisidium (nativa), Diplodon (nativa) e Corbicula (invasora). Os maiores valores de densidade média foram observados para Diplodon sp. na lagoa São João/C, para Pisidium sterkianum (Pilsbry, 1897) na lagoa São João/M, e para a espécie invasora Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774) na lagoa Jatobá/C. Esse estudo teve como objetivo realizar o primeiro levantamento de bivalves límnicos em lagoas de inundação do Parque Nacional da Ilha Grande, além de fornecer subsídios para melhor compreensão da ecologia desses moluscos. O registro de espécies nativas, após um longo período sem ocorrência na região da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná, demonstrou a importância da proteção das lagoas do Parque Nacional de Ilha Grande para a manutenção dos mesmos, podendo assim ser um possível refúgio para algumas espécies de bivalves límnicos nativos.

The Ilha Grande National Park, Paraná, Brazil, is located in the Upper Paraná River and has characteristics typical of a floodplains. This protected area includes lagoons connected and disconnected to the Paraná River, although the latter also connect during periods of high water level, thus composing a heterogeneous group of lacustrine environments. The enormous potential the flora and fauna diversities are still little known to the region, as can be seen through benthic invertebrates, inclunding bivalves mollusks. The granulometric composition of these floodplain lagoons was formed mainly by mud and very fine sand. Furthermore, organic matter composition was predominantly of fine particulate. The other abiotic factors differed from lagoons located within the island of the park to those located in the left margin of Paraná River. The results demonstrated the importance of abiotic factors such as the physical composition of granulometric texture, organic matter and macrophyte banks, to the establishment of bivalves in these floodplain lagoons. We recorded bivalves of Pisidium (native), Diplodon (native), and Corbicula (invasive). The highest values of Diplodon sp. density were observed at São João/C lake, for Pisidium sterkianum (Pilsbry, 1897) at São João/M lake, and to Jatobá/C lagoon with high density of invasive species Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774). This study to obtain conduct the first records of freshwater bivalves in floodplains lagoon in the Ilha Grande National Park, and provides contributions to better understanding the ecology of these mollusks. The recording of native species in the region of Upper Paraná River floodplain after a lomg period without new records, demonstrated the importance of protecting the lagoons of the Ilha Grande National Park as they can be a possible refuge to some species of native freshwater bivalves.
