ABSTRACT Social entrepreneurs have several motivations that lead them to open and continue their companies, which vary according to the stage of the social enterprise’s life cycle. This study seeks to analyze the motivations throughout the stages of a social enterprise’s life cycle. To do this, we carried out a qualitative research with primary data collected through interviews with experts and social entrepreneurs and secondary data collected through documents and websites. The results indicate three types of motivational factors: essential factors, building factors, and solidifying factors. Each type plays different roles during life cycle. All essential factors are present across all stages of the life cycle. The building factors are found mainly in the early stages, while different solidifying factors are distributed throughout the stages of the life cycle. The essential factors are the main difference between social and traditional entrepreneurs. This research brings new insights by linking motivational factors to the life cycle stages of social enterprises. Entrepreneurs can use this information to identify their stage and leverage their motivators for development, while training programs can be tailored to better align with the life cycle stage of social enterprises. companies enterprises enterprise s websites development

Abstract Purpose This study aims to explore how a microlending digital platform connects social investors in developed countries and micro-entrepreneurs in Africa. However, additional research is necessary to discuss how online auction models are designed and implemented and how existing theories can explain their use in the so-called developing countries. Design/methodology/approach The research is based on a single case study: an online auction model for microlending named AfricaMC. Two main methods collected empirical data, namely, online participant observation, i.e. real-time participation in the online auction market and in the forum of discussions, where the authors observed the processes of microlending transactions as registered members; analysis of online documents, by reviewing forum discussions, analyzing reports, blogs, chats and other materials. Findings The results suggest that using sociological and information systems theoretical lenses in a complementary manner could provide greater value than using economics. Originality/value The study makes two main contributions. First, it mobilizes a pluralist theoretical approach based on economic, sociological and information systems perspectives to improve the understanding of microlending digital platforms using online auction models. Second, it uses the understanding produced from data analysis of one particular African case to validate propositions derived from these three theoretical approaches that might be applied to other cases.

RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo desta pesquisa foi compreender como os contextos econômicos e sociais influenciam no potencial transformador da economia compartilhada (EC). Originalidade/valor: A literatura referente ao tema da EC ainda é repleta de incertezas. Entre elas, verificamos que há um paradoxo entre a geração de benefícios sociais à comunidade e o aumento da desigualdade social. Design/metodologia/abordagem: Os dados foram coletados por meio de análise documental, netnografia, observação participante e entrevistas. A partir da coleta, analisaram-se os dados à luz do framework teórico proposto por Wittmayer et al. (2019) para o exame de narrativas ligadas à inovação social. Resultados: As narrativas produzidas diferem quanto ao tipo de plataforma (com e sem fins lucrativos). Verificamos que, nas plataformas sem fins lucrativos, os contextos econômicos e sociais não influenciam no potencial transformador orientado pela EC, diferentemente das plataformas com fins lucrativos, nas quais a narrativa “oportunidade de renda” é sensível ao contexto. As principais contribuições da pesquisa realizada consistem na utilização de um framework teórico da inovação social para analisar as narrativas da EC e na observação de diferenças contextuais sobre o fenômeno, o que deveria levar as plataformas e os governos (no seu papel regulador) a ter diferentes olhares sobre a EC. Concluímos que as narrativas da EC se apresentam diferentemente. As plataformas com poucos (ou sem) fins lucrativos se inserem no fenômeno da inovação social como um processo transformador e, nos contextos de maior vulnerabilidade econômico social, podem ser um mecanismo de agravamento da desigualdade social.

ABSTRACT Purpose: The aim of this research is to understand how the social-economic context influences the transformative potential of the sharing economy (SE). Originality/value: The literature on SE is still fraught with uncertainty. We have found that there is a paradox between generating social benefits to the community versus increasing social inequality. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected from documentary analysis, netnography, participant observation, and interviews. The data collected were analyzed in the light of the theoretical framework proposed by Wittmayer et al. (2019) for the analysis of narratives related to social innovation. Findings: The produced narratives differ in terms of the type of platform (profit and non-profit). We have found that, in non-profit platforms, the economic and social context does not influence the transformative potential guided by the SE; for-profit platforms, on the other hand, the narrative of ‘income opportunity’ is context-sensitive. The main contributions of the research are the use of a theoretical framework of social innovation to analyze the narratives of the SE and the observation of contextual differences about the phenomenon, which should lead platforms and governments (in their regulatory role) to have different views on SE. We conclude that the narratives of the SE are different. For-profit platforms either do not take part or contribute very little to the phe nomenon of social innovation as a transformative process and, in the contexts of greater social-economic vulnerability, it can be a mechanism of worsening social inequality.

Resumo Objetivo: O objetivo desta pesquisa é oferecer uma perspectiva mais holística da liderança sustentável (LS), entendendo quais de seus atributos permitem mudanças em organizações orientadas à sustentabilidade e como eles estão conectados. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma pesquisa exploratória e qualitativa por meio de estudos de caso múltiplos e comparativos. Selecionamos quatro organizações e realizamos entrevistas com três grupos diferentes de gerentes - gerente de RSC, gerente de RH e gerentes de negócios - em cada organização. Além disso, coletamos documentos institucionais e documentos externos. A observação também foi utilizada como técnica de coleta de dados. Os dados foram analisados pela técnica de análise de conteúdo. Resultados: O papel da LS muda de acordo com a maturidade organizacional em relação à sustentabilidade. Até os sete atributos reconhecidos como importantes por todos os gerentes (liderança, habilidades interpessoais, foco em sustentabilidade, orientação à mudança, alinhamento com a cultura organizacional, valores e princípios morais e visão de negócios) mostravam diferentes posicionamentos, dependendo do quadrante do qual os gerentes fazem parte. Contribuições: A estrutura proposta não apenas identificou quais são os atributos da LS, mas também as conectou em duas perspectivas, apontando que esses atributos são interdependentes e inter-relacionados. Nossa contribuição para a prática é o uso da estrutura como um guia para liderar mudanças, a fim de promover a mudança para a LS nas organizações, seja desenvolvendo programas de desenvolvimento de LS ou como orientação nos processos de recrutamento de novos líderes.

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of the study is to provide a more holistic perspective on sustainable leadership (SL), understanding which of its attributes enable changes to more sustainable‐oriented organizations and how they are connected. Design/methodology/approach: We carried out an exploratory and qualitative study through multiple and comparative case studies. We selected four organizations and conducted interviews with three different groups of managers in each organization: CSR manager, HR manager, and business managers. In addition, we collected institutional and external documents. We also used observation as a data collection technique. We analyzed the data using the content analysis technique. Findings: The role of SL changes according to organizational maturity in relation to sustainability. Even the seven attributes recognized as important by all managers (leadership, interpersonal skills, focus on sustainability, orientation toward change, alignment with the organizational culture, values and moral principles, and business vision) showed different positioning depending on the quadrant the managers are a part of. Originality/value: The proposed framework not only identified what the attributes of SL are but also connected them under two perspectives, pointing out that these attributes are interdependent and interrelated. Our contribution to practice lies in the use of the framework as a guide to lead change in order to bring about a shift to SL in organizations, whether through developing SL programs, or as guidance in the processes of recruiting new leaders.

RESUMO Os espaços de trabalho compartilhados, conhecidos como coworking , são ambientes de trabalho que se disseminaram com rapidez nos últimos anos, e distinguem-se como um novo modelo de trabalho. O objetivo deste artigo foi analisar práticas e relações em ambientes de coworking a fim de se compreender como ocorrem e como contribuem para construir espaços de interação social. Para tanto, foi conduzido um estudo de caso único, realizado em profundidade, cujos dados foram coletados a partir de técnicas de inspiração etnográfica, incluindo intensa observação participante, entrevistas semiestruturadas e análise documental. O estudo de campo teve duração de 25 dias, ao longo dos quais utilizou-se dos métodos de observação direta e entrevistas, realizadas com 40 associados do espaço escolhido. Os resultados identificaram três níveis de relações que suportam um espaço de trabalho que vai além do compartilhamento. Em cada nível foram identificadas práticas que favorecem a construção de um espaço de interação social: práticas de autogestão, práticas de negócios cooperados e práticas comunitárias. Por fim, lança-se a chamada a uma reflexão em compreender o que de fato significa construir um espaço social dentro de um espaço de trabalho.

ABSTRACT Coworking spaces are work environments that have spread quickly in recent years and might be seen as a new work model. The purpose of this article was to analyze coworking practices and relationships in order to better understand how they occur and how they contribute to building spaces of social interaction. To explore this question, a unique and in-depth case study was conducted. Data were collected using techniques of ethnographic inspiration, including intense participant observation, semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. The field study lasted 25 days and 40 associates were interviewed. The results show three levels of relationship that support a workspace that goes beyond ‘sharing’. At each level, practices to construct a space of social interaction were identified: self-management practices, cooperative business practices and community practices. Finally, we call for a reflection of a better understanding on what a social space within a coworking really means.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the benefits generated by the use of new technologies by nonprofit organizations, with focus on how these artefacts can improve their ability to achieve their social mission. Design/methodology/approach To understand the potential use of technology by a nonprofit organization, the concept of affordance was applied. The authors propose a processual model of affordances’ interdependences that enrich the extant literature. Six nonprofit organizations in two Brazilian regions were deeply investigated using a multiple case study method. Findings The authors identified new sub-categories of technology affordances, which are not just related to nonprofit but that could be also applied to other types, including for-profit. Sub-categories of affordances seem to play different roles in the actualization process. The authors are not proposing determinist connections among sub-categories, but they argue that they sustain some sub-categories precede or create the condition for others to emerge. Originality/value Nonprofit organizations lack theoretical and empirical investigations on management in general and on technology management in particular. In its turn, the technology field does not pay much attention, both in terms of research and practice, to the specificities of the third sector where the nonprofit organizations operate. This process model of potential uses of new technologies that might favor nonprofit organizations contributes to the cross-fertilization between two distinct fields: third sector and technology management.

Abstract Some can regard the sharing economy (SE) as a sustainable economy for allowing innovative (even disruptive) business opportunities and for encouraging new forms of consumption. There are, however, controversies about SE’s role in being a commercially-oriented economy taking advantage of regulatory and market failures. Such ambiguous trajectories provide opportunities for research, and one of them brings attention to power’s exercise to promote or influence change. This research, a single-case study of Uber, aims to understand the connections between framings to empower and to resist in a SE context. Three two-sided (empower and resist) perspectives - the economic system, the business market, and the sustainable-driven perspectives - and two strengthening actions - searching for legitimacy and fighting and calling for status quo - arise within the SE context analyzed. Empowering framings sounded more convincing compared to resisting ones, and resisting framings highlighted contradictions not expected from SE initiatives. Our findings suggest that SE does have the potential to stimulate a kind of non-reversible sustainable mindset, but this path choice is still unclear.

Resumo A utilização da energia e as diferentes estratégias de implantação e difusão das novas formas de tecnologia energética envolvem múltiplos stakeholders, com papéis, interesses, valores e crenças distintos. Diante deste contexto, este artigo identificou como atuam e quais são os papéis exercidos pelos stakeholders envolvidos em Pequenas Centrais Hidrelétricas, a partir de uma pesquisa de natureza qualitativa e exploratória. Os dados primários foram coletados a partir de um roteiro de entrevista semiestruturado, sendo entrevistados nove representantes de diferentes grupos de stakeholders . Os dados secundários foram coletados por meio de pesquisa documental, contemplando a legislação do setor, relatórios, editais e orientações disponíveis em sites eletrônicos de órgãos do governo e agências reguladoras. Para examinar os dados, foi utilizada a técnica de análise de conteúdo a partir de três categorias: a) quem são; b) o que fazem; e c) como interagem os stakeholders nas etapas de implantação de uma pequena central hidrelétrica. Foram identificados sete grupos de stakeholders: (1) Agentes Institucionais; (2) Organizações não governamentais; (3) Investidores e produtores de energias renováveis; (4) Bancos de investimento; (5) Fornecedores do setor; (6) Associações de fomento de energias renováveis; e (7) Stakeholders Locais. Além disso, foram descritas cinco etapas para implantação de empreendimentos de energias renováveis e como esses grupos interagem em cada uma delas. Os resultados apontam para a falta de colaboração e diálogo entre os diferentes stakeholders no momento de tomar a decisão sobre a gestão dos recursos, bem como para a falta de informação, o que leva à perda de confiança dos stakeholders locais no empreendimento, antes da instalação e durante todo o seu ciclo de vida. Como contribuição, este estudo verifica que, uma vez identificadas as etapas na implantação e os atores envolvidos, novas formas de comunicação podem ser propostas, a fim de aumentar a transparência da informação, além de modelos de fluxo de trabalho que atentem para a colaboração e o diálogo entre os diferentes stakeholders.

Abstract The use of energy and the different strategies of diffusion and implementation of new energy technologies involve multiple stakeholders who have distinct roles, interests, values, and beliefs. In this context, this study seeks to identify and understand how stakeholders involved in Small Hydropower Plants act and which roles they play based on an qualitative research. Primary data were collected from semi-structured interviews applied to nine representatives of different groups of stakeholders. Secondary data were collected through documentary research, observing the sector legislation, reports, edicts, and instructions available on the websites of government entities and regulatory agencies. Data on stakeholders were assessed by content analysis in three categories: a) who they are; b) what they do; and c) how they interact during the stages of implementation of a small hydropower plant. Seven stakeholder groups and nineteen members that represent them were identified. The following groups of stakeholders were identified: (1) Institutional Agents; (2) Non-governmental organizations; (3) Renewable energy investors and producers; (4) Investment banks; (5) Suppliers of the sector; (6) Associations for renewable energy development; and (7) Local stakeholders. In addition, there is a description of the five stages of implementation of renewable energy projects and how those groups interact in each of them. The results show a lack of collaboration and dialogue between the different stakeholders when deciding about resource management, as well as lack of information leading to loss of confidence of local stakeholders in the projects before their installation and throughout their life cycle. As a contribution, this study points out that, once the stages of implementation and the actors involved have been identified, new forms of communication can be proposed to increase information transparency, as well as workflow models that attempt to collaborate and dialogue with the different stakeholders.

Resumo Tem-se discutido a Responsabilidade Social Corporativa buscando-se aumentar a compreensão sobre o papel das empresas no contexto do Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Mas quais as problemáticas em evidência atualmente e para onde apontam? Este trabalho analisou as publicações científicas internacionais relacionadas às temáticas Desenvolvimento Sustentável e Responsabilidade Social Corporativa, proporcionando um mapa dos estudos publicados. A partir da análise bibliométrica das pesquisas publicadas na Web of Science entre 1998 e 2015, foram localizados 197 artigos, escritos por 402 autores, vinculados a 246 instituições de 43 países. Buscando critérios de relevância e atualidade, organizaram-se os artigos em dois grupos: artigos mais citados e artigos mais recentes. Foram analisadas as principais contribuições dessas publicações, identificando-se sete problemáticas principais: Ontologia; Fatores para adoção de iniciativas de sustentabilidade; Avaliação de desempenho; Impactos sociais e/ou ambientais; Relatórios de sustentabilidade; Ensino; e Sustentabilidade como estratégia. Para cada problemática são sugeridas lacunas para futuras pesquisas.

Abstract Corporate social responsibility has been discussed with the objective of improving the understanding of the performance of organizations in the context of sustainable development. But, what are the highlighted problems in current scientific literature and where are they pointing to? This study analyzed international scientific publications related to Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility, providing a map of published studies. The bibliometric analysis of studies published in Web of Science from 1998 to 2015 found 197 articles, written by 402 authors, linked to 246 institutions from 43 countries. Looking for relevance criteria and currentness, literature analysis organized the studies into two groups: the most mentioned and the most recent articles. Through the analysis of the main contributions of these publications, it was possible to identify seven key problems: Ontology, Factors for adoption of sustainable initiatives, Performance evaluation, Social and/or environmental impacts, Sustainability reports, Education and Sustainability as a strategy. Opportunities for future research on each problem are suggested.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to propose a typology for sharing economy that allows the characterization and classification of its main forms of manifestation. Originality/value: the theme that involves collaborative consumption and sharing economy has wide definitions with no clear establishment of boundaries between them. Part of that definition gap may occur because of the recent emergency of literature on sharing economy. Additionally, the fact that sharing economy and collaborative consumption are the newest buzzwords, several businesses started calling themselves as such. Design/methodology/approach: from the review of the literature, 11 characteristics that describe the theme were identified. In the light of those characteristics, 72 collaborative consumption websites were analyzed, representatives of the 24 collaborative consumption categories proposed by Botsman and Rogers (2010). Findings: three archetypes were identified: 1. new business models represent the new players based on technological platforms, which are the core business of the company, and generate income by charging service fees; 2. redesigned businesses are traditional market models redesigned to present time and price advantages to the consumer; 3. sharing by ideal is the archetype that best represents sustainable consumption alternative models.

RESUMO Entre as alternativas pela busca do desenvolvimento sustentável estão os negócios com impacto social, ou seja, aqueles que são desenvolvidos para atender a algum tipo de demanda social e com atuação rentável. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi propor um modelo de negócios com impacto social que auxilie na identificação de seus elementos. O modelo de negócio proposto diferencia-se dos já existentes por compilar vários deles e, principalmente, por detalhar os elementos que o constituem. O método de pesquisa baseou-se em dados secundários, coletados a partir de pesquisa documental, e dados primários provenientes de entrevistas e questionários, totalizando 49 organizações. O modelo estrutura-se em cinco dimensões compostas por 13 elementos. Como contribuições adicionais, apresentam-se uma proposta de definição de Negócios com Impacto Social (NIS) e uma taxonomia, considerando os produtos/serviços, os clientes e a estrutura de lucros.

ABSTRACT Among the alternatives in the pursuit of sustainable development are businesses with a social impact, i.e., those businesses created to meet some type of social demand via a profitable operation. The aim of this study was to propose a business model with a social impact that can help identifying the elements of such businesses. The business model proposed differs from existing ones in that it combines a number of said models and mainly in that it details the elements that form it. Our method was based on secondary data collected from documentary research, and primary data from interviews and questionnaires, totaling 49 organizations. The model consists of 5 dimensions formed by 13 elements. As additional contributions, we present a proposal for the definition of Businesses with a Social Impact (BSI) and a taxonomy, considering products/services, clients, and profit structure.

RESUMEN Entre las alternativas por la búsqueda del desarrollo sostenible están los negocios con impacto social, o sea, aquellos que son desarrollados para atender a algún tipo de demanda social y con actuación rentable. El objetivo de este estudio fue proponer un modelo de negocios con impacto social que ayude a la identificación de sus elementos. El modelo de negocio propuesto se diferencia de los ya existentes por compilar varios de ellos y, principalmente, por detallar los elementos que lo constituyen. El método de estudio se basó en datos secundarios, recopilados a partir de investigación documental, y datos primarios provenientes de entrevistas y cuestionarios, totalizando 49 organizaciones. El modelo se estructura en cinco dimensiones compuestas por 13 elementos. Como contribuciones adicionales, se presentan una propuesta de definición de Negocios con Impacto Social (NIS) y una taxonomía, considerando los productos/servicios, los clientes y la estructura de lucros.

Esta pesquisa reflete sobre a contribuição do Programa Bolsa Família (PBF) para o enfrentamento da pobreza e uma maior autonomia dos sujeitos beneficiários. Foram coletados dados quantitativos com 103 famílias beneficiárias, complementados com entrevistas qualitativas com profissionais e famílias. Entre as formas de privação (educação, saúde, trabalho e renda etc.), a educação mostrou-se o aspecto de privação que obteve os melhores resultados na percepção das famílias na busca da autonomia. A participação em atividades de apoio social tem efeito direto na percepção de melhoria da situação da família; entretanto, a participação das famílias mostrou-se incipiente. Essas atividades contribuem para o desenvolvimento da autonomia e podem ser compreendidas como o principal mecanismo do programa para as pessoas encontrarem as "portas de saída".

This research reflects on the contribution of Bolsa Família Program to the confrontation of poverty and an increased autonomy of beneficiary subjects. Quantitative data were collected with 103 beneficiary families, supplemented with qualitative interviews with professionals and families. Among the deprivation forms (education, health, work and income, etc.), education has proved to be the deprivation aspect which obtained the best results in the perception of families in search for autonomy. Participation in social support activities has a direct effect on the perception of family improved situation; however, the participation of families showed to be incipient. These activities contribute to develop autonomy and they may be understood as the main program mechanism for people to find the "exit doors".

Esta investigación refleja acerca de la contribución del Programa Bolsa Familia para el afrontamiento de la pobreza y una mayor autonomía de los sujetos beneficiarios. Fueron recogidos datos cuantitativos con 103 familias beneficiarias, complementados con entrevistas cualitativas con profesionales y familias. Entre las formas de privación (educación, salud, trabajo e ingresos etc.), la educación se mostró el aspecto de privación que obtuvo los mejores resultados en la percepción de las familias en la búsqueda de la autonomía. La participación en actividades de apoyo social tiene un efecto directo en la percepción de mejora de la situación de la familia; sin embargo, la participación de las familias se mostró incipiente. Esas actividades contribuyen al desarrollo de la autonomía y pueden ser comprendidas como el principal mecanismo del programa para las personas encontraren las "puertas de salida".

This paper proposes a conceptual model to facilitate incorporation of sustainability into business practices, learning from the context of companies operating in Latin America - more specifically, in Brazil - that excel in terms of sustainability initiatives. Five large companies recognized as leaders in sustainability practices were studied using the grounded theory method. The main result of our study is the identification of a number of influential factors, interconnected according to three broad categories - corporate view, organizational structure and organizational mechanisms - allowing a better understanding of the integration of sustainability into business practices.

Este estudo explora o relacionamento existente entre as características técnicas de um projeto de sistema de informação e apoio à decisão e os comportamentos dos usuários no seu uso. Seu objetivo: apresentar um modelo conceitual de Enterprise Information Systems (EIS), construído a partir da literatura, das tendências tecnológicas e de estudos de caso, que identificam características de sistema para comportamentos proativos dos usuários na recuperação de informações. Entre os principais resultados, pode-se destacar a definição de categorias relacionadas com as características dos sistemas - flexibilidade, integração e apresentação - e de categorias relacionadas com os comportamentos dos usuários na recuperação de informações - exploração de dados (scanning) e busca focada (focus search) - bem como a apresentação de um modelo conceitual para sistemas EIS. Pode-se destacar também a exploração de uma nova técnica para métodos qualitativos, denominada Modelagem de Casos, desenvolvida com o objetivo de buscar maior exploração do contexto na fase de análise de dados.

This study investigates the relationship between technical characteristics of decision support and information system project and users' behaviors. The objective is to present a conceptual model of Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) that was constructed starting from the literature, the technological tendencies and the case studies, which identifie system characteristics for proactive users' behaviors, in recovery information. Among the main results, we can stand out the definition of categories related with the systems characteristics - flexibility, integration and presentation - and the definition of categories related with the users' behaviors in the information recovery - scanning and focus search - as well as the presentation of a conceptual model for EIS systems. We can also stand out the exploration of a new technique for qualitative methods, called Case Modeling, developed with the objective of looking for a larger exploration of the context in the phase of data analysis.

O objetivo deste artigo é evidenciar a importância da integração de um módulo de inteligência competitiva (coleta, organização e difusão da informação externa) nos sistemas de informações para o apoio à decisão das empresas, enriquecendo assim os Enterprise Information Systems (EIS). É a efetividade do gerente na busca da identificação ou da antecipação de problemas ou oportunidades, em um cenário de cada vez maiores pressões internas e principalmente externas. O propósito maior é fornecer amplo ambiente de oferta de informações internas e externas, formais e informais, informações sobre as percepções do mercado, informações envolvidas em análises e simulações, enfim, um ambiente integrador das informações disponíveis e relevantes para o sucesso da organização e que crie condições de proatividade para os usuários.

This article aims to highlight the importance of the integration of a business intelligence module (collection, organization and difusion of external information) in the information system for decision makers. The objective is to enrich the Enterprise Information Systems, (EIS) helping the search for problems anticipation or even the identification of new opportunities in a scenery of increasing internal and mainly external pressures. The main purpose of this integration is to suply a wide environment of data and information: internal and external, formal and informal, market perception information, information involving analysis and simulation, in short, an environment integrating all relevant information to the success of the organization and giving conditions for users'proactivity.
