RESUMO Objetivo Analisar o impacto na qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde oral de indivíduos com disfunção temporomandibular, antes e após o tratamento de fotobiomodulação associada a terapia miofuncional orofacial. Método Estudo do tipo ensaio clínico randomizado, controlado e cego, com 34 voluntários distribuídos aleatoriamente em dois grupos: G1, que recebeu a Terapia Miofuncional Orofacial (TMO) associada a fotobiomodulação e o G2, tratado pela TMO associada ao laser inativo. Os indivíduos foram submetidos, primeiramente, à avaliação para serem classificados de acordo com o grau da dor orofacial pela Escala Visual Analógica (EVA) e também quanto ao impacto da qualidade de vida relacionada a saúde oral (QVRSO) pelo questionário Oral Health Impact Profile – Short form (OHIP-14). Os dados obtidos foram analisados estatisticamente. Foi adotado o nível de significância de 0,05 (95%). Resultados “Dor física”, “desconforto psicológico”, “limitação física” e “limitação psicológica” foram os aspectos mais impactantes na QVRSO. O G1 apresentou respostas positivas para o respectivo tratamento, assim como o G2. Observou-se correlação positiva e de grau forte para EVA e escore total do OHIP-14 em ambos os grupos após tratamento. Porém, os indivíduos do grupo controle (G2) evidenciaram que a recuperação funcional foi o aspecto que mais se percebeu de mudança positiva na QVRSO em comparação ao grupo experimental (G1). Conclusão As pessoas que receberam fotobiomodulação associada a TMO-perceberam melhora da QVRSO, assim como as tratadas com o laser placebo. Houve correlação positiva e forte em ambos os grupos na melhora do grau da dor e autopercepção da QVRSO.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the impact of photobiomodulation combined with orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) on the oral health quality of life (OHQOL) of individuals with temporomandibular disorder, before and after the treatment. Methods Blind, controlled, randomized clinical trial with 34 volunteers randomly distributed into two groups: G1, who received OMT combined with photobiomodulation, and G2, treated with OMT combined with inactive laser. The subjects were first assessed with a visual analog scale (VAS) to classify them according to the degree of orofacial pain and with the Oral Health Impact Profile – Short Form (OHIP-14) regarding the impact on the OHQOL. The resulting data were statistically analyzed. The significance level was set at 0.05 (95%). Results “Physical pain”, “psychological discomfort”, “physical disability”, and “psychological disability” were the aspects with the greatest impact on the OHQOL. The G1 subjects responded positively to their treatment, as well as G2 to theirs. There was a strong positive correlation between VAS and total OHIP-14 score in both groups after the treatment. However, the functional recovery in the control group individuals (G2) was the most perceived positive change in the OHQOL in comparison with the experimental group (G1). Conclusion The people who received photobiomodulation combined with OMT perceived an improvement in the OHQOL, as well as those treated with placebo laser. There was a strong positive correlation in both groups in the improvement of the degree of pain and self-perception of the OHQOL.

OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to identify evidence of validity of a self-reported Oropharyngeal Dysphagia screening questionnaire for older adults based on test content, response processes, internal structure, relations to other variables, and reliability. METHOD: This is a nonrandomized, cross-sectional study employing the concepts and principles of the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. Data were collected from 644 community-dwelling older adults (both genders, age: ≥60 years) who agreed to participate in some steps of the validation process. Statistical methods obtained the content representation of the construct, internal structure validation, discriminant and convergent evidence, and reliability, using a 5% significance level. RESULTS: The screening tool was re-specified in nine questions that provided the best fit and robust reliability, with proper discriminant and convergent evidence. CONCLUSIONS: The screening questionnaire presented valid and reliable results to identify oropharyngeal dysphagia symptoms in older adults, highlighting the importance of the validation process based on the standards to construct an epidemiological instrument.

O edentulismo completo caracteriza-se pela perda total dos dentes permanentes, resultando em alteraçoes estéticas, estruturais e funcionais, podendo impactar negativamente na qualidade de vida, sendo minimizado através da reabilitaçâo com a protese dentària. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde oral em pacientes com a protese original completamaxilar e mandibular, très meses após instalaçâo da nova protese e dois anos depois da confecçâo da nova protese total bimaxilar removível. Nesse estudo comparativo longitudinal, participaram 15 voluntàrios, com faixa etària entre 50 e 82 anos, de ambos os sexos, que buscaram tratamento no Departamento de Odontologia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, para a confecçâo de novaspróteses. Utilizou-se a versâo brasileira do Oral Health Impact Profile para pacientes edêntulos (OHIP-EDENT) para avaliar a qualidade de vida. A análise dos dados foi realizada de forma descritiva e analítica com os testes de Friedman e Wilcoxon, com nivel de significância de 5%.Em relaçâo aos dominios do OHIP-EDENT, verificou-se diferença para desconforto e incapacidade mastigatória entre a avaliaçâo inicial e após dois anos. Nos dominios Dor e desconforto orofacial, Incapacidade Psicológica e Incapa-cidade Social, nâo ocorreram diferenças entre os períodos avaliados. Foram observados indicadores de melhora na qualidade de vida dos pacientes, no dominio desconforto e incapacidade mastigatória entre a avaliaçâo e a 2 anos.

Full edentulism is characterized by the complete loss of permanent teeth, resulting in aesthetic, structural and functional changes which can negatively impact quality of life, and which are minimized through rehabilitation with complete dentures. The aim of this study was to compare oral health-related quality of life in patients with complete original dentures three months after installation of new dentures and two years after fabrication of new complete removable dentures. In this longitudinal comparative study, 15 volunteers of both genders, aged 50 to 82 years, who sought treatment at the Department of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, participated in the preparation of new dentures. The Brazilian version of the Oral Health Impact Profile for edentulous patients (OHIP-EDENT) was used to evaluate quality of life. Data analysis was performed descriptively and with hypothesis testing using the Friedman and Wilcoxon tests with 5% significance level. In relation to the OHIP-EDENT domains, there was a difference for chewing discomfort and inability to chew between baseline and two years. However, there was no difference between the evaluated periods in the areas ofpain and orofacial muscle discomfort, psychological inability and social disability. Improvement indicators in patient quality of life were observed in the area of discomfort and inability to chew between baseline and 2 years.

INTRODUÇÃO: A laringectomia total pode ocasionar sequelas na deglutição e comprometer a qualidade de vida do paciente, em virtude dos impactos negativos na fisiologia e na vida social. OBJETIVO: Descrever o impacto da deglutição na qualidade de vida de laringectomizados totais. MÉTODO: Foi aplicado o questionário Swallowing Quality of Life, composto por 44 perguntas que avaliam 11 domínios relacionados à qualidade de vida (fardo, duração, desejo, frequência de sintomas, seleção de alimentos, comunicação, medo, saúde mental, função social, sono e fadiga). A análise foi realizada através de estatística descritiva, com medidas de tendência central e de variabilidade. Estudo de séries. RESULTADOS: A amostra foi composta por 15 voluntários submetidos à laringectomia total e radioterapia adjuvante. 66,7% consideraram a saúde boa e 73% não referiram restrições à consistência dos alimentos. Os domínios "comunicação" e "medo" representaram impacto severo e a "duração da alimentação" exerceu impacto moderado na qualidade de vida. Os itens com menores escores foram: maior tempo para comer do que outras pessoas (domínio "duração da alimentação"), tosse e tosse para retirar o líquido ou a comida para fora da boca quando estes estão parados (domínio "frequência dos sintomas"), dificuldades em entender (domínio "comunicação") e medo de engasgar e ter pneumonia (domínio "medo"). CONCLUSÃO: Em laringectomizados totais, a deglutição exerceu impacto severo a moderado nos domínios "comunicação", "medo" e "duração da alimentação".

INTRODUCTION: Total laryngectomy creates deglutition disorders and causes a decrease in quality of life AIM: To describe the impact of swallowing and quality of life of patients after total laryngectomy. METHOD: A case series study. Patients completed a Swallowing and Quality of Life questionnaire composed of 44 questions assessing 11 domains related to quality of life (burden, eating duration, eating desire, frequency of symptoms, food selection, communication, fear, mental health, social functioning, sleep, and fatigue). The analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, including measures of central tendency and variability. RESULTS: The sample comprised 15 patients who underwent total laryngectomy and adjuvant radiotherapy. Of these, 66.7% classified their health as good and 73% reported no restrictions on food consistency. The domains "communication" and "fear" represented severe impact and "eating duration" represented moderate impact on quality of life. The items with lower scores were: longer time to eat than others (domain "eating duration"), cough and cough to remove the liquid or food of the mouth when they are stopped (domain "symptom frequency"), difficulties in understanding (domain "communication") and fear of choking and having pneumonia (domain "fear"). CONCLUSION: After total laryngectomy, patients report that swallowing issues have moderate to severe impact in "communication," "fear," and "eating duration" domains.

A mastigação, ato complexo controlado pelo sistema nervoso central, é uma das funções mais importantes do Sistema Estomatognático. Durante esse ato a atividade elétrica da musculatura mastigatória pode ser quantificada por meio da eletromiografia de superfície. Com o objetivo de revisar sistematicamente na literatura os métodos e alimentos mais utilizados na EMGS do músculo masseter durante a mastigação, foi realizada uma busca nas bases de dados SciELO-Brasil, Lilacs e Medline/Pubmed no período de setembro a outubro de 2009. Foram incluídos os estudos de base populacional e excluídos os estudos de revisão sem definição metodológica delineada e estudos realizados com crianças, adolescentes e idosos. Foram encontrados 657 artigos no cruzamento dos seguintes descritores e seus correspondentes em inglês: mastigação and eletromiografia and músculo masseter, dos quais 12 deles foram selecionados. Verificou-se que os métodos envolvidos na execução da eletromiografia de superfície do músculo masseter, durante a mastigação, apresentam variações de acordo com cada autor, não havendo padronização de um alimento específico para execução do exame.

The chewing, a complex action controlled by the central nervous system, is one of the most important functions of the Stomatognathic System. During this action, the electrical activity of the masticatory muscles may be quantified using a surface electromyography. In order to systematically review the literature, on the methods and foods used in EMGS masseter muscle during mastication, we carried out a search in the databases SciELO, Brazil, Lilacs and Medline / Pubmed, from September to October 2009. We included population-based studies and excluded review studies without clear methodological definition and studies with children, adolescents and elderly. About 657 articles were found at the intersection of the following descriptors and their corresponding in English: chewing and masseter and electromyography, which 12 of them selected. It was found that the methods involved in the execution of surface electromyography of the masseter muscle during mastication, vary according to each author, and there is no standard for a specific food in order to perform the examination.

OBJETIVO: Caracterizar a atividade elétrica muscular do masseter durante a deglutição de líquido em indivíduos adultos jovens saudáveis. MÉTODOS: A população constou de 14 voluntários considerados saudáveis seguindo os critérios de inclusão e exclusão estabelecidos para esta pesquisa. Foi realizada avaliação eletromiográfica do músculo masseter bilateralmente, durante o repouso e nas tarefas de deglutição de 14,5 ml, 20 ml e 100 ml de líquido. O sinal eletromiográfico foi normalizado pela máxima atividade voluntária resistida (MAVR), considerada como 100% de atividade elétrica muscular. RESULTADOS: No masseter direito, a maior média percentual foi encontrada na tarefa de deglutição de 20 ml e no masseter esquerdo na tarefa de 14,5 ml. No masseter direito ocorreu diferença entre as deglutições de 14,5 ml e 20 ml. No masseter esquerdo não houve diferença entre as tarefas de deglutição. CONCLUSÃO: A atividade elétrica muscular do masseter em adultos jovens saudáveis durante a deglutição de líquido pode ser influenciada pelo volume deglutido e apresenta diferentes respostas bilateralmente.

PURPOSE: To characterize the electrical activity of the masseter muscle during swallowing of liquids in healthy young adults. METHODS: Participants were 14 volunteers considered healthy according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria established for this study. The bilateral electromyographic evaluation of the masseter muscle was conducted at rest and in swallowing tasks of 14.5 ml, 20 ml and 100 ml of liquid. The electromyographic signal was normalized by the maximum voluntary activity resisted (MVAR), considered as 100% of the muscle's electrical activity. RESULTS: In the right masseter, the highest average percentage was found in the 20 ml task, and in the left masseter, in the 14.5 ml task. In the right masseter there was difference between the 14.5 ml and the 20 ml swallowing tasks. In the left masseter, no differences were found between the swallowing tasks. CONCLUSION: The electrical activity of the masseter muscle in healthy young adults during deglutition of liquids can be influenced by volume swallowed, and present different responses bilaterally.

Introdução: A asma é uma doença inflamatória crónica de alta prevalência, considerada um problema de saúde pública e constitui-se como uma das causas de baixo peso e atraso do crescimento. Objectivo: O objectivo do presente artigo foi rever na literatura os efeitos da asma no estado nutricional em crianças. Material e métodos: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática com busca de artigos nas bases PubMed, SciELO e LILACS. Foram excluídos os artigos de revisão, estudos com adultos ou pesquisas que não avaliassem os efeitos da asma em crianças. Foram incluídos artigos originais em humanos. Resultados: Na revisão sistemática da literatura foram encontrados 839 na base MEDLINE (1997-2008), 62 artigos na base MEDLINE (1966-1996), 47 no LILACS e 16 no SciELO - Brasil, totalizando 964 artigos. Destes, foram seleccionados 17 artigos. Conclusão: Conclui-se que a evidência de que a asma interfere no estado nutricional não pode ser comprovada neste estudo.

Introduction: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of high prevalence, considered a public health problem and is thought to be one cause of low birth weight and growth retardation. Purpose: The purpose of this article was to review in literature the effects of asthma on the nutritional status in children. Material and methods: A systematic review was made by searching for articles in PubMed, SciELO and LILACS databases. Review articles, studies with adults or research that did not evaluate the effects of asthma in children were excluded. Hence original articles in humans were included. Results: In the systematic review we found 901 articles in MEDLINE (1966-1996), 47 in LILACS and SciELO in the 16 - Brazil, totaling 964 articles. Of these, 17 articles were selected. Conclusion: Evidence that asthma interferes in nutritional status can not be proven in this study.

TEMA: eletromiografia de superfície nos periódicos nacionais em Fonoaudiologia. OBJETIVO: caracterizar a abordagem da eletromiografia de superfície nos periódicos nacionais em Fonoaudiologia. CONCLUSÃO: poucos estudos abordam a eletromiografia de superfície nos periódicos nacionais em Fonoaudiologia, com maior concentração nas áreas de motricidade orofacial e fluência revelando uma maior necessidade de aprofundar esse assunto e diversificar os temas de interesse fonoaudiológico.

THEME: surface electromyography in national journals in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. PURPOSE: to characterize the approach of surface electromyography in national journals in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. CONCLUSIONS: there are few studies about the surface electromyography in national journals in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, but most pertain to the Orofacial Motricity and Fluency areas. There seems to be a need to develop this subject and to diversify the topics referring to Speech-Language Pathology interest.

MÉTODOS: Foram examinados 1.315 indivíduos do município de Bauru, SP, na faixa etária de 30 a 92 anos de idade, ambos os sexos, primeira (Isseis) e segunda (Niseis) gerações. Os critérios de exclusão da amostra foram o edentulismo total e a presença de seis sextantes nulos. O índice periodontal comunitário e o índice de perda de inserção periodontal foram obtidos mediante sondagem em 10 dentes-índice, em uma amostra de 831 indivíduos. O diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus foi estabelecido através da glicemia em jejum e de duas horas após sobrecarga com 75 g de glicose. Para análise estatística foram utilizados os Testes de Kappa e de Qui-quadrado. RESULTADOS: Quanto às condições periodontais, foram encontrados 25,5% de indivíduos sadios, 12,5% com sangramento à sondagem, 49,4% com presença de cálculo, 10,4% com bolsas superficiais, 2,2% com bolsas profundas. Apresentaram perdas de inserção periodontal de 0-3 mm, 24,2% dos indivíduos, de 4-5 mm, 36,7%, de 6-8 mm, 23,7%, de 9-11 mm, 11,3% e de 12 mm ou mais, 4,1%. A avaliação entre diabetes e condições periodontais não apresentou associação estatística (p<0,05), embora os indivíduos com diabetes tenham maiores percentuais de bolsas profundas e perdas de inserção maiores que 6mm que os não diabéticos, quando testados pelo método do Qui-quadrado. CONCLUSÕES: A abordagem epidemiológica da condição periodontal e sua associação com doenças sistêmicas, como o diabetes mellitus, pode oferecer importante contribuição para prevenir suas complicações.

METHODS: The sample consisted of 1,315 subjects, of both sexes, first (Issei) and second (Nisei) generations, aged 30 to 92 years, living in Bauru, Brazil. Edentulism and presence of 6 null sextants were the exclusion criteria for the sample. The Community Periodontal Index and Periodontal Attachment Loss Index were determined using the probing of 10 teeth in a sample of 831 subjects. The diagnosis of diabetes mellitus was based on fasting blood sugar and blood sugar 2 hours after 75 mg of glucose overload. Statistical analysis was conducted using Kappa test and Chi-square test. RESULTS: Regarding periodontal conditions, 25.5% of the sample were healthy people, 12.5% showed bleeding on probing, 49.4% calculus, 10.4% pockets of 4-5 mm deep, and 2.2% pockets deeper than 6 mm. The percentage of subjects with an attachment loss of 0-3mm was 24.2%; 4-5mm, 36.7%; 6-8mm, 23.7%; 9-11mm, 11.3%; and up to 12 mm or more, 4.1%. The association between the periodontal condition and diabetes mellitus showed no statistical significance (p<0.05), although diabetic subjects have a higher percentage of deeper pockets and attachment loss >6 mm than non-diabetics, as tested by Chi-square test. CONCLUSIONS: Epidemiological studies relating oral health and systemic disease, such as diabetes mellitus, can provide important contributions for preventing the worsening of such diseases.
