Abstract Spelunconiscus Campos-Filho, Araujo and Taiti, 2014 is a monotypic genus of the family Styloniscidae represented by a troglobitic species, Spelunconiscus castroi Campos-Filho, Araujo and Taiti, 2014, from the cave MOC-32, in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. New representatives of this family were found in three additional caves, which revealed a new species, Spelunconiscus septemlacuum sp. nov., from Taboa and Tatuzinhos caves and a new occurrence for the type-species in Retiro cave. The original diagnosis of Spelunconiscus is emended due to the discovery of a spur-like structure in the male pereopod VII ischium, as well as some supplementary traits that have not been previously considered. Spelunconiscus septemlacuum sp. nov. differs from S. castroi in the number of articles of the antennal flagellum, in the proportion between this flagellum and 5th article of peduncle of antenna, in the size of maxilliped endite, in the morphology of male pleopod II and in body size. A discussion is provided for both taxonomic and ecological concerns.

Abstract Background The association between ideal cardiovascular health (ICVH) status and atrial fibrillation or flutter (AFF) diagnosis has been less studied compared to other cardiovascular diseases. Objective To analyze the association between AFF diagnosis and ICVH metrics and scores in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). Methods This study analyzed data from 13,141 participants with complete data. Electrocardiographic tracings were coded according to the Minnesota Coding System, in a centralized reading center. ICVH metrics (diet, physical activity, body mass index, smoking, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, and total cholesterol) and scores were calculated as proposed by the American Heart Association. Crude and adjusted binary logistic regression models were built to analyze the association of ICVH metrics and scores with AFF diagnosis. Significance level was set at 0.05. Results The sample had a median age of 55 years and 54.4% were women. In adjusted models, ICVH scores were not significantly associated with prevalent AFF diagnosis (odds ratio [OR]:0.96; 95% confidence interval [95% CI]:0.80-1.16; p=0.70). Ideal blood pressure (OR:0.33; 95% CI:0.15–0.74; p=0.007) and total cholesterol (OR:1.88; 95% CI:1.19–2.98; p=0.007) profiles were significantly associated with AFF diagnosis. Conclusions No significant associations were identified between global ICVH scores and AFF diagnosis after multivariable adjustment in our analyses, at least partially due to the antagonistic associations of AFF with blood pressure and total cholesterol ICVH metrics. Our results suggest that estimating the prevention of AFF burden using global ICVH scores may not be adequate, and ICVH metrics should be considered in separate.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the morphometry of the pelvis to determine the safe trajectory for the insertion of the S2-iliac screw, and to correlate it with studies reported in the literature for other populations. Method: The computed tomography (CT) pelvic exams of 36 Brazilian patients without congenital malformations, tumors, pelvic ring fractures or dysplasias were selected from the database of a radiological clinic. To define the ideal trajectory of the S2-iliac screw, the following variables were measured: 1- maximum sacroiliac screw length; 2- thickness of the iliac dipole for planning the choice of screw dimensions (length and diameter); 3 - distance between the insertion point of the iliac S2 screw and the posterior sacral cortex; 4 - angulation for insertion of the screw in the mediolateral direction, representing the angle formed between the “iliac line” and the anatomical sagittal plane; 5- Angulation for insertion of the screw in the craniocaudal direction. The Pearson's chi squared and student's t tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: The sample consisted of 36 patients, 50% (18/36) of whom were women. The mean age was 63.7 years, ranging from 23 to 96 years. All the pelvic morphometric variables analyzed presented values similar to those described in the literature for other populations. Conclusion: Prior evaluation of the tomography exams was important for preoperative planning, and there was a statistically significant difference between the sexes only in relation to the variables left craniocaudal and length of the left internal table. Level of evidence III; Observational cross-sectional study.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

The recent emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led society to live with a serious public health problem. In this sense, repositioning of antiretrovirals has captured the attention of the scientific community. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is an antiretroviral compound that is used to treat acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and hepatitis B. In this short report, we present a scale-up investigation of TDF by in situ infrared spectroscopy monitoring and a forced degradation study to describe a new degradation product. Finally, we have evaluated TDF in vitro for SARS-CoV-2 for the first time foreseeing the using of this medicine in pre-clinical and clinical investigations for the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) treatment.

Sample preparation of polymers for halogen determination requires special attention because they are difficult to bring into solution and due to the risk of analyte losses when using acid digestion. A method using microwave-induced combustion (MIC) was optimized for accurate determination of halogens in polymeric parts obtained in waste of electrical and electronic equipment. Results were compared with those by using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) with alkaline solution and microwave-assisted wet digestion (MAWD) using concentrated nitric acid, which are common choices for sample preparation. In this particular case, the MAE method was not suitable and underestimated results were obtained, showing the necessity for the complete digestion. Even with the use of MAWD under high temperature and pressure, incomplete digestion and high acid content were obtained, which were unsuitable for analysis and resulted in poor recovery. Only by using MIC (diluted ammonia as absorbing solution) acceptable recoveries (95 to 104%) and agreement with certified values for the certified reference materials (CRMs) of polymers were obtained. Thus, a suitable method for all halogen to be determined by ion chromatography (IC) or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), with the exception of F, was obtained in agreement with the requirements by the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) European directive.

In this paper, a simple, sensitive and precise electroanalytical method was developed using a chemically-reduced graphene-oxide (CRGO)-modified glassy carbon electrode and square wave voltammetry (SWV) for determination of ciprofloxacin in pharmaceutical formulations (tablets) and milk samples. Advantages of this sensor include a potential displacement of 100 mV and a 5-fold current increase for the electrochemical oxidation of ciprofloxacin, which resulted in a highly sensitive sensor, when compared to unmodified electrode. The improved properties of the modified electrode are likely due to the formation of a porous surface evidenced by the change in electrode kinetics (thin-layer diffusion process). The proposed sensor is free from interference of sample matrix (pharmaceutical formulations and low/high-fat milk) avoiding cumbersome processes such as previous separations, solvent extraction, or sample filtration (samples were only diluted in Britton-Robinson buffer solution). The results by SWV showed a limit of detection of 0.21 µmol L-1 (correspondent to 0.069 mg L-1), which is lower than the ones obtained using other carbon-based electrodes, relative standard deviations lower than 12%, and satisfactory recoveries in the range from 84 to 109%. The results obtained were statistically similar (95% confidence level) with those performed through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

This work presents a simple and fast method for colchicine (CO) determination in pharmaceutical formulations and urine by multiple pulse amperometry (MPA) with flow injection analysis (FIA) system using a boron-doped diamond electrode. In optimized conditions, it was possible to quantify CO in urine samples without interference of uric acid and ascorbic acid. The working linear range for CO quantification was achieved from 1.0 × 10-7 to 0.5 × 10-3mol L-1 with a low limit of detection of 2.14 × 10-8mol L-1. Furthermore, the proposed method showed high repeatability for 10 consecutive injections of 1.0 × 10-4mol L-1 CO (relative standard deviation = 1.28%) and good analytical frequency (30 determinations per hour). The addition and recovery studies in all pharmaceutical samples were approximately 100% and the results for CO determination were compared by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to verify the occurrence of Leishmania spp. and Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum in horses from a visceral leishmaniasis endemic area in Brazil. DNA samples from blood and conjunctival swab (CS) were tested by PCR and Indirect Immunofluorescence Antibody Test (IFAT). Although none of the horses was clinically sick, animals infected by Leishmania spp. were found and some could be characterized as infected by L. (L.) infantum. From 40 horses, 100% of the animals were positive by blood PCR, 90% (36/40) by CS PCR, and 2.5% (01/40) in serodiagnosis, by IFAT. Six from these 40 horses were L. (L.) infantum positive by blood PCR. Direct sequencing and analysis of amplicons resulted in a sequence to evolutionary analysis. Results indicate the presence of Leishmania spp. and L. (L.) infantum infecting healthy horses in Brazil. The presence of Leishmania spp. and L. (L.) infantum DNA in asymptomatic horses suggests that they can be important reservoirs of these parasites, a highly relevant finding for the epidemiological surveillance of the diseases they cause.

<p>The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of acephate, carbaryl, carbendazim, chlorpyrifos, dichlorvos, fenpropathrin, methamidophos and permethrin in conventionally and organically grown tomatoes from Espírito Santo, Brazil, between May 2012 and April 2013. QuEChERS sample preparation was used and analysis was performed by LC-MS/MS and GC-MS. The method validation showed good linearity (R > 0.99), precision (RSD < 13%) and accuracy (89 - 123%), and the limits of quantification were below 0.01 mg kg-1 for all pesticides. The pesticides acephate, carbaryl (0.23 mg kg-1; exceeding maximum residue levels), carbendazim, chlorpyriphos, dichlorvos, fenpropathrin (0.41 mg kg-1; exceeding maximum residue levels), methamidophos and permethrin (0.51 mg kg-1, exceeding maximum residue levels) were found in conventional tomatoes. In organic tomatoes, only one sample exhibited the presence of permethrin (0.21 mg kg-1). Considering that the pesticides found are toxic and carcinogenic, and given the high incidence of irregularities, it is important to implement government actions to ensure consumer safety.</p>

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The study was conducted during agricultural year 2010, in Typic Inceptisol derived from limestone in the municipality of Baraúna in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The objective of this study was to define the best combination of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) doses for economic production of corn, as well as the critical levels of N in leaf and P in leaf and soil. Seventeen treatments were studied, being 16 resulting from the combination between four doses of N (30, 60, 90 and 120 kg ha-1) and four doses of P2O5 (30, 60, 90 and 120 kg ha-1) and a control treatment, without application of these nutrients. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with four repetitions. The best combination of the N and P2O5 recommended to produce maximum economic efficiency in grain was 70 kg ha-1 of N combined with 120 kg ha-1 of P2O5. The critical levels of N in leaf and P in leaf and soil associated with maximum economic production efficiency of maize grain were, respectively, 32.93 g kg-1, 7.97 mg dm-3 and 3.11 g kg-1.

O nó 2 conecta as regiões intertropicais brasileiras.
The geographic distribution of 27 species of the South American megafauna of herbivore mammals during the Late Pleistocene was analyzed in order to identify their distributional patterns. The distribution of the species was studied using the panbiogeographical method of track analysis. Six generalized tracks (GTs) and two biogeographic nodes were obtained. The GTs did not completely superpose with the areas of open savanna present in Pleistocene, nor with the biotic tracks of some arthropods typical of arid climate, indicating that these animals avoided arid environment. Overall, the GTs coincided with some biogeographic provinces defined on the basis of living taxa, indicating that certain current distributional patterns already existed in Pleistocene. The biogeographic nodes coincided with the borders between the main vegetal formations of the Pleistocene, showing that the type of vegetation had great influence in the distribution of the mammalian megafauna. The node 1 confirmed the existence of contact zones between paleobiogeographic regions near Argentina-Uruguay border. The node 2 connects the Brazilian Intertropical regions.

BACKGROUND: A new generation of Amplatzer devices with lower profile and greater flexibility has been recently developed for percutaneous occlusion of the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). In this paper, the use of this new device, the Amplatzer Duct Occludder II TM (ADO II) for percutaneous closure of the PDA as well as for the treatment of other congenital and structural heart defects is reported, assessing its safety and efficacy. METHODS: Longitudinal and observational study of a cohort of patients with congenital and structural heart defects treated with ADO II between October 2009 and August 2011. Patients weighing less than 5 kg and PDAs > 5.5 mm and/or type B were excluded. The device was implanted using the antegrade or retrograde approach. The waist was 2 mm larger than the defect and the length of the prosthesis was 4 mm for shorter lesions (less than 6-8 mm). RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients with a median age and weight of 2 years and 11.7 kg, respectively, were included. Twenty-three had a PDA with a mean minimal diameter of 2.3 + 0.8 mm. The remainder had muscular ventricular septal defect (1), pulmonary arteriovenous fistula (1), ruptured aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva (1), and univentricular heart in the early postoperative period of bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis with residual antegrade pulmonary flow (2). The device was successfully implanted in all patients, except for an infant weighing 8 kg with a long, tortuous and oblique PDA with a diameter of 2.8 mm and a shallow ampulla. There was total occlusion of the defects in all patients. One patient with univentricular heart and right isomerism died due to complications not related to the procedure. CONCLUSIONS: ADO II proved to be a flexible, safe and effective device for the percutaneous treatment of infants, children and selected adults with PDA and other congenital and structural heart defects. Its use may have limitations for some anatomical PDA configurations in smaller infants.
