RESUMO: Antes de fazer a recomendação de um herbicida, é preciso conhecer suas interações com os atributos do solo que irão influenciar a sua sorção e a meia-vida no solo. Esse conhecimento é condição essencial para serem minimizados os eventuais efeitos negativos que possam resultar de sua aplicação. Todavia, devido à grande diversidade de solo e clima do Brasil, principalmente para os produtos de uso recente no País, como é o caso do herbicida tembotrione, esse conhecimento na maioria das vezes não está disponível. Essa pode ser a principal causa da ocorrência de relatos de intoxicação em cultivos realizados em sucessão a cultura do milho pulverizada com esse herbicida. A fim de reduzir possíveis impactos em culturas sucessoras e a contaminação de águas superficiais e subterrâneas, utilizando a cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência, neste trabalho foi determinada a meia-vida do tembotrione em solos com diferentes atributos. Os solos avaliados foram: Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo de Viçosa-MG com e sem calagem, Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo de Rio Paranaíba-MG, Latossolo Amarelo de Sooretama-ES e Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo de Gurupi-TO com e sem calagem. Conclui-se que a calagem pode favorecer a degradação do tembotrione no solo e que existem relações diretas entre valores da meia-vida do tembotrione e teores de argila e matéria orgânica dos solos. A meia-vida do tembotrione em amostras do Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo coletadas nos municípios de Viçosa (que não recebeu calagem) e Rio Paranaíba, MG, foi superior a 90 dias, indicando riscos de carryover em cultivos sucessivos ao milho pulverizados com o tembotrione nessas regiões.

ABSTRACT: Before recommending an herbicide, it is necessary to know its interactions with the soil attributes that will influence its sorption and half-life in the soil. This knowledge is an essential condition for minimizing any negative effects that may result from its application. However, due to the great diversity of soil and climate in Brazil, especially for products of recent use in the country, such as the herbicide tembotrione, this knowledge is often not available. This may be the main cause of occurrence of intoxication reports in crops carried out in succession to corn sprayed with this herbicide. In order to reduce possible impacts on successor crops and the contamination of surface and groundwater using the high-performance liquid chromatography, the tembotrione half-life was determined in soils with different attributes. The evaluated soils were a Red-Yellow Latosol with and without liming (Viçosa, MG), Red-Yellow Latosol (Rio Paranaíba, MG), Yellow Latosol (Sooretama, ES), and Red-Yellow Latosol with and without liming (Gurupi, TO). The results showed that liming might favor tembotrione degradation in the soil, as well as direct relationships between values of tembotrione half-life and contents of clay and soil organic matter. Tembotrione half-life in samples of Red-Yellow Latosol (without liming) collected in Viçosa and Rio Paranaíba, MG, was higher than 90 days, indicating carryover risks in successive crops to corn sprayed with tembotrione in these regions.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento inicial e as características fisiológicas do eucalipto submetido a diferentes manejos do capim-braquiária. O experimento foi realizado em ambiente protegido, no delineamento de blocos casualizados com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em esquema fatorial (5 x 2) + 1, sendo o primeiro fator correspondente aos tipos de manejo da planta daninha (ausência de controle, controle químico mantendo no solo a parte aérea do capim-braquiária, controle químico retirando a parte aérea do capim-braquiária, controle mecânico mantendo no solo a parte aérea do capim-braquiária e controle mecânico retirando a parte aérea do capim-braquiária) o segundo às espécies de capim-braquiária (Urochloa brizantha e Urochloa decumbens), além de uma testemunha referente ao eucalipto em monocultivo. O crescimento do eucalipto não foi alterado pela presença das espécies de capim-braquiária até os 50 dias após a aplicação dos tratamentos (DAT). Todavia, o convívio dessas espécies com o eucalipto até os 107 DAT reduziu o diâmetro do coleto, a matéria seca total e a aérea foliar, mas não alterou as características relacionadas a fotossíntese e transpiração. O método de controle adotado com a remoção ou manutenção da parte aérea do capim-braquiária, independentemente da espécie, não alterou o crescimento inicial do eucalipto. Conclui-se que o convívio por 105 dias do eucalipto com Urochloa decumbens ou Urochloa brizantha reduz o crescimento do eucalipto. Contudo, os controles químico ou mecânico, associados ou não à retirada dos resíduos da capina do capim-braquiária, foram métodos eficientes para impedir a interferência dessas plantas daninhas.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the initial growth and the physiological characteristics of eucalypt submitted to different managements of signalgrass. The experiment was conducted in a protected environment, using a randomized blocks design with five repetitions. The treatments were arranged in a (5 x 2) + 1 factorial design, and the first factor corresponded to the types of weed management (no control; chemical control keeping the signalgrass shoot on the soil; chemical control with removal of the signalgrass shoot; mechanical control keeping the signalgrass shoot on the soil, and mechanical control with removal of the signalgrass shoot); the second factor corresponded to the two weeds species (U. brizantha and U. decumbens) and a control relative to the eucalypt in monoculture. The eucalypt growth was not affected by the presence of the Urochloa species until 50 days after treatments (DAT). However, the coexistence of these species with eucalypt for 107 DAT reduced the collar diameter, total dry matter, and the leaf area, but did not alter the characteristics related to photosynthesis and transpiration. The control method adopted, with removal or maintenance of the signalgrass shoot, regardless of species, did not change the initial eucalypt growth. It can be concluded that the coexistence of eucalypt with Urochloa decumbens or Urochloa brizantha for 105 days reduces the eucalypt growth. However, the use of chemical or mechanical control, with or without removal of signalgrass residue, were effective methods to prevent interference of these weeds.

RESUMO A dermatite atópica canina (DAC) é uma dermatose comum, definida como doença de cunho genético que predispõe à inflamação e ao prurido cutâneo, associados à resposta IgE específica na maior parte dos casos. O diagnóstico da DAC é clínico e pode ser posteriormente complementado por testes alérgicos cutâneos e/ou sorológicos. O objetivo desses testes é identificar possíveis alérgenos e, com isso, possibilitar ao clínico a seleção de antígenos candidatos para a imunoterapia alérgeno-específica. No presente estudo, foram testados 58 animais diagnosticados para DAC. Todos os animais foram submetidos ao teste cutâneo intradérmico (TID), e amostras de sangue foram coletadas para a realização de testes sorológicos. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram elevada prevalência de sensibilização aos ácaros domiciliares e ao pólen da gramínea C. dactylon nos cães testados. Com este trabalho, foi possível identificar os principais alérgenos envolvidos na resposta imunológica de cães atópicos residentes na região central do Rio Grande do Sul.

Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a common dermatosis, defined as a genetic-related disease which predisposes to skin inflammation and pruritus, associated to a IgE-specific response in most of cases. Clinical diagnosis may be later complemented by skin allergy and/or serological tests. The aim of these tests is to identify possible allergens in order to enable the clinicians to select candidate antigens for allergen specific immunotherapy. In the present study 58 CAD positive animals were tested. All were submitted to the intradermal test (IDT) and screened for the presence of antibodies against different antigens using ELISA. The obtained results show a high prevalence of sensitization among the tested dogs to house dust mites and to pollen ofC. dactylon. With this work it was possible to identify the main allergens involved in immunological response of dogs with CAD living in central area of Rio Grande do Sul.

Este estudo compara a eficácia da impressão cutânea com fita de acetato ao raspado cutâneo profundo para a pesquisa de D. canis e S. scabiei. Em um período de seis meses, foram coletadas 134 amostras de cada uma das técnicas de um total de 115 cães atendidos na rotina dermatológica do Hospital Veterinário Universitário da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (HVU-UFSM). Desses pacientes, 27 cães apresentavam sarna demodécica e 12 cães, escabiose. A impressão cutânea com fita de acetato, quando comparada ao raspado cutâneo profundo, demonstrou ser significativamente superior na pesquisa dos ácaros D. canis e S. scabiei (p = 0,007). Conclui-se que o método da fita de acetato pode ser usado em substituição ao raspado profundo de pele para o diagnóstico e controle da terapia das enfermidades dermatológicas produzidas por ácaros. Além de ser um método sensível, ele é menos traumático para o animal, sendo, dessa forma, mais aceito pelo proprietário.

This study compares the efficacy of skin impression with acetate tape and the deep skin scraping test to find D. canis and S. scabieiin dogs. During six months, 134 samples were collected by both techniques from 115 dogs treated at the dermatology service of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Maria (HVU-UFSM). Of these patients, 27 had demodicosis and 12 had scabies. The impression with acetate tape test (ITT) was shown to be significantly superior to the deep skin scraping test (DSST) in finding D. canis and S. scabiei mites (p = 0.007). Based on our results we could conclude that acetate tape impression is a reliable method for diagnosing and monitoring therapy of dermatopathies caused by mites and can be used to replace the traditional deep skin scraping method. In addition, since it is less traumatic for the dog, this method shows more acceptance by the owner.

Cistos renais podem formar-se em qualquer parte do néfron e dos ductos coletores. Alguns são hereditários, originando-se durante a organogênese, e outros se desenvolvem no tecido renal normal, depois que os rins estão completamente formados. No presente relato, descreve-se a ressecção de cisto e abscesso renais, por cirurgia laparoscópica em um cão. Para o acesso, foram utilizados três portais, dois de 10mm de diâmetro e um de 5mm, dispostos na parede abdominal lateral direita e, num segundo momento, na parede abdominal lateral esquerda. Conclui-se, portanto, que a técnica laparoscópica com três portais permite a realização de ressecção de cisto e abscesso renais em cães, sem a ocorrência de recidivas em curto prazo.

Renal cysts can be formed anywhere in the nephron and collecting duct system. Some are hereditary, originated during organogenesis, and others could have origin in the normal kidney tissue, after the kidney's development. This report describes the resection of renal cysts and abscesses by laparoscopic surgery in a dog. In order to access the cavity, three portals were used; two with 10mm and another with 5mm diameter, in the right lateral abdominal wall, and in another moment, in the left lateral abdominal wall. It is concluded that the laparoscopic technique with three portals allows the resection of renal cysts and abscesses in dogs, without the occurrence of relapses in the short postoperative time.

Avaliou-se o efeito da utilização de concentrados com diferentes teores de proteína bruta (PB) para vacas em lactação sob pastejo rotacionado de capim-elefante, distribuídas em três quadrados latinos (3x3). Os tratamentos foram concentrados suplementares contendo 15,2; 18,2 ou 21,1% de PB. Foram oferecidos 3kg de concentrado por vaca, duas vezes ao dia. A disponibilidade de matéria seca (MS)/ha de capim-elefante foi de 1.873kg ou de 17,4kg de MS/vaca dia-1. A MS do capim-elefante foi de 19,6%, contendo 13,9% de PB e 66,1% de fibra detergente neutro (FDN) e 67,4% de digestibilidade in vitro da MS (DIVMS). Não houve diferença (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos quanto ao consumo diário de MS da dieta total (21,5; 21,6 e 20,8kg/d), MS do capim-elefante (16,1; 16,3 e 15,5kg/d) e FDN do capim-elefante (10,7; 10,7 e 10,3kg/d). As produções de leite (17,5; 17,2 e 17,6kg/d) e os teores de gordura (3,4; 3,5 e 3,5%), proteína (2,9; 2,9 e 2,9%), lactose (4,4; 4,4 e 4,4%) e N-ureia no leite (14,1; 14,6 e 15,8mg/dL) não diferiram (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos (respectivamente, para 15,2; 18,2 ou 21,1% de PB). O teor de N-ureia no plasma foi maior (P<0,05) em vacas alimentadas com concentrado com 21,1% de PB (na ordem citada: 11,5; 12,2 e 14,4mg/dL). Nas condições experimentais, o concentrado suplementar com 15,2% de PB pode ser utilizado na alimentação de vacas em lactação em pastagem de capim-elefante.

To evaluate the effect of feeding concentrate with different crude protein (CP) contents, lactating dairy cows grazing elephant grass were distributed in a 3x3 latin square. Three kg/cow of concentrates (15.2, 18.2, or 21.1% CP) were offered twice a day. Elephant grass dry matter (DM) availability was 1,873kg/ha; with a daily offer of 17.4kg/cow. The elephant grass DM content was 19.6% with 13.9% CP, 66.1% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and 67.4% in vitro DM digestibility. There was no difference among treatments regarding total diet DM daily intake (21.5, 21.6, and 20.8kg/cow), elephant grass DM (16.1, 16.3, and 15.5kg/cow), and elephant grass NDF (10.7, 10.7, and 10.3kg/cow). Milk yield (17.5, 17.2, and 17.6kg/d) fat (3.4, 3.5, and 3.5%), protein (2.9, 2.9, and 2.9%), lactose (4.4, 4.4, and 4.4%), and N-urea (14.1, 14.6, and 15.8mg/dL) did not differ among concentrates (P>0.05). Plasma N-urea was higher in cows fed concentrate with 21.1% CP (11.5 = 12.2<14.4mg/dL, P<0.05). According to these results, concentrate with 15.2% CP can be used to lactating dairy cows grazing elephant grass, without affecting milk production as compared to concentrate with 18.2 or 21.1% of CP.

RESUMO O comportamento alimentar de cigarrinhas vetoras de Xylella fastidiosa, agente causal da clorose variegada dos citros, pode influenciar sua eficiência de transmissão. Avaliou-se a influência das condições hídricas do solo e da temperatura ambiente na sobrevivência e alimentação do vetor Oncometopia facialis (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) em "seedlings" de laranjeira doce (Citrus sinensis).O estudo foi realizado em câmara de crescimento, simulando-se condições de temperatura média e de fotofase de verão (24º C e 13h) e de inverno (19º C e 11h) da região Central do Estado de São Paulo. As plantas foram submetidas a dois regimes hídricos: capacidade de campo e déficit hídrico. A sobrevivência de O. facialis foi menor quando mantida em "seedlings" sob déficit hídrico, independentemente das condições de temperatura ("verão" ou "inverno"). A taxa de ingestão de seiva, medida indiretamente pela excreção de "honeydew", foi maior nos tratamentos mantidos em capacidade de campo para as duas condições de temperatura. Comprovou-se, então, que o déficit hídrico do solo reduz a sobrevivência e a taxa de alimentação de O. facialis em "seedlings" de citros. Os resultados sugerem uma menor adequação da planta cítrica às cigarrinhas durante épocas mais secas do ano.

ABSTRACT The feeding behavior of the leafhopper vectors of Xylella fastidiosa, the causal agent of Citrus Variegated Chlorosis, can influence its transmission efficiency. The influence of soil water conditions and environmental temperature on survival and feeding behavior of the leafhopper Oncometopia facialis (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) was evaluated on sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) seedlings. This study was carried out in a growth chamber adjusted for mean temperature and photophase of summer (24º C and 13h) and winter (19º C and 11h) seasons in the Central Region of Sao Paulo State. The plants were submitted to two soil water treatments: field capacity and water deficit. The survival of the O. facialis was lower on seedlings under water deficit, regardless of the temperature conditions (summer or winter). The sap ingestion rates, which were indirectly measured by the honeydew excretion, were higher on seedlings under field capacity for both temperature conditions. This study shows that soil water deficit reduces leafhopper survival and ingestion rates on citrus seedlings, thus providing evidence that host plant suitability to the vector is affected during the dry season.

A new protocol is described for immunization of outbred Swiss mice. The procedure is based on subcutaneous implantation of antigen-coupled polyester-polyurethane sponges cut into disks of 10 mm in diameter vs 2 mm in thickness. Antigen coupling was performed by overnight incubation of the sponge with a solution of ovalbumin (Ova) (2 mg/ml) diluted in sodium carbonate buffer, pH 9.6. The amount of ovalbumin that was taken up by the sponge was between 71.4 to 82.5 µg. This was estimated by comparing the Ova absorbance at 280 nm in coating buffer solutions before and after incubation. To compare the efficiency of the proposed method, experimental groups immunized with the antigen in the presence of adjuvants (10 µg in Al(OH)3 or 100 µg in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)) were run in parallel. The data obtained after the 3rd week of immunization indicate that both cellular and humoral immune responses were achieved. These were assayed by antigen-induced footpad swelling and ELISA (specific antibodies), respectively. The levels of both immune responses elicited were similar to the responses observed in mice immunized with ovalbumin in the presence of Al(OH)3. The method might represent an advantage when immunizing with pathogenic antigens. Preliminary experiments have suggested that the antigen remains immobilized or bound to the sponge for a long period of time, since there is an increment on the cell population inside the sponges after boosting the animals. If so, the undesirable effects of immunization would be reduced.
