Abstract Bilinguals and multilinguals commonly encounter words in their multiple languages which share some linguistic aspects. Among those are interlingual homographs, or words that have the exact same orthography in two different languages. The current study examined, through a semantic judgment task in English with ERP recording, how multilinguals (speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, English and German) accessed the meanings of interlingual homographs that belonged to their dominant and non-dominant foreign languages compared to a control group of Brazilian Portuguese-English bilinguals. The findings demonstrated that multilinguals were slower to respond to the English-German interlingual homographs as compared to control stimuli (no homographs). The results also demonstrated that, when the interlingual homographs were semantically related to their targets in the non-target language, there were significantly more errors and a higher RT than in unrelated conditions. Additionally, only the bilinguals presented the typical N400 effect for unrelated conditions, suggesting that the co-activation of the non-target language due to interlingual homographs modulated this ERP in the multilingual group. Our results provide support for the Bilingual Interactive Activation plus model and suggest that literature findings on interference between first and second languages also hold for second and third languages.

Zusammenfassung Zweisprachige und mehrsprachige Menschen stoßen in ihren verschiedenen Sprachen häufig auf Wörter, die einige linguistische Aspekte gemeinsam haben. Dazu gehören interlingualen Homographen, d.h. Wörter, die sich in zwei unterschiedlichen Sprachen durch genau dieselbe Orthographie auszeichnen. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde anhand einer semantischen Beurteilungsaufgabe in Englisch mit ERP-Aufzeichnung untersucht, wie mehrsprachige Personen (Sprecher des brasilianischen Portugiesisch, des Englischen und des Deutschen) im Vergleich zu einer Kontrollgruppe von brasilianischen Portugiesisch-Englisch-Zweisprachigen auf die Bedeutung von interlingualen Homographen zugreifen, die zu ihrer dominanten und nicht-dominanten Fremdsprache gehören. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass mehrsprachige Personen im Vergleich zu den Kontrollstimuli (keine Homographen) langsamer auf die interlingualen Homographen Englisch-Deutsch reagierten. Die Ergebnisse zeigten auch, dass, wenn die interlingualen Homographen semantisch mit ihren Zielen in der Nicht-Zielsprache verwandt waren, signifikant mehr Fehler und eine höhere RT auftraten als in nicht verwandten Bedingungen. Darüber hinaus zeigten nur die Bilingualen den typischen N400-Effekt für nicht verwandte Bedingungen, was darauf hindeutet, dass die Koaktivierung der Nicht-Zielsprache durch interlinguale Homographen diese ERP in der mehrsprachigen Gruppe modulierte. Unsere Ergebnisse stützen das Bilingual Interactive Activation plus Modell und legen nahe, dass die Literaturergebnisse zur Interferenz zwischen Erst- und Zweitsprache auch für die Zweit- und Drittsprache gelten.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de diferentes níveis de inclusão de água na composição química e no perfil fermentativo de silagem de grão de milho reidratado. O experimento foi conduzido em esquema fatorial, em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso. Cinco tratamentos com diferentes níveis de inclusão de água (% da matéria natural) foram avaliados: milho grão seco (controle); 90% de milho grão seco (MGS) e 10% de água; 80% de MGS e 20% de água; 70% de MGS e 30% de água e 60% de MGS e 40% de água, totalizando 45 silos experimentais. A inclusão de água na silagem do grão de milho reconstituído promoveu redução nos conteúdos de PB (% MS) e FDN (% MS). Contudo, o incremento de água aumentou os teores de NNP/NT e as perdas por efluente, gás e matéria seca. O tratamento com a inclusão de 30% de água na matéria natural propicia um melhor perfil fermentativo e menores perdas por efluente e matéria seca, sendo recomendado para a ensilagem de grão de milho seco moído.

ABSTRACT The objective with this study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of water inclusion on the chemical composition and fermentation profiles of reconstituted corn grain silage. The experiment was carried out in a factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design, with three replicates per treatment. Five treatments were evaluated with different levels of water inclusion (% of the natural matter): dry corn grain (control); 90% dry corn grain (DCG) and 10% water; 80% DCG and 20% water; 70% DGC and 30% water; and 60% DCG and 40% water, totaling 45 experimental silos. Inclusion of water in the silage of reconstituted corn grain promoted a reduction in the CP (%) and NDF (%) contents. However, the water increase elevated the NPN/TN contents and the amount of effluent, gas and dry matter (%) losses. The treatment with inclusion of 30% water in the natural matter leads to a better fermentation profile and fewer losses of effluent and dry matter, so it is recommended for ensiling dry ground corn grain.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com este estudo verificar a densidade populacional e a dinâmica do perfilhamento em dosséis de capim Marandu submetidos a estratégias de adubação nitrogenada, caracterizadas pelo fornecimento de N via ureia ou inoculante (Azospirillum brasilense). Os tratamentos foram quatro estratégias de adubação nitrogenada: sem fertilização, 80kg N/ha, inoculante (A. brasilense) e 80kg N/ha + inoculante, distribuídos em um delineamento de blocos completos ao acaso, com três repetições por tratamento. As estratégias de aporte nitrogenado foram avaliadas em seis épocas: outubro, novembro e dezembro de 2012; e janeiro, março e abril de 2013. Não foi verificada influência da dose de nitrogênio ou do inoculante sobre a taxa de aparecimento (TAP), a taxa de mortalidade (TMP), a taxa de sobrevivência (TSP) e a densidade populacional de perfilhos (DPP). No entanto, essas variáveis foram influenciadas pela época do ano. A TAP e a TSP apresentaram maiores valores no início do período experimental (outubro) e menor valor ao final do período (março a abril). A TMP e a DPP expressaram respostas opostas, com menores valores em outubro e maiores a partir de janeiro. Não houve influência do nitrogênio e do inoculante sobre a dinâmica populacional de perfilhos em capim Marandu.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to verify the population density and the dynamics of tillering in the Marandu palisade grass sward subjected to nitrogen (N) fertilization strategies, characterized by the N supply via urea or bacterial inoculant (Azospirillum brasilense). The treatments comprised of four nitrogen fertilization strategies: (A) Without fertilization, (B) 80 kg N/ha, (C) inoculant (A. brasilense), and (D) 80 kg N/ha + inoculant, distributed in a randomized complete block design, with three replications. The nitrogen supply strategies were evaluated during six periods: October, November, and December (2012) as well as January, March, and April (2013). The nitrogen dose or inoculant had no effect on the tiller appearance rate (TAR), tiller mortality rate (TMR), tiller survival rate (TSR), or tiller population density (TPD). However, these variables were influenced by the season. The TAR and TSR were higher at the beginning of the experimental period (October) and lower towards the end of the period (March-April), whereas, TMR and TPD exhibited the opposite behavior, with lower values in October and higher from January onward. Neither the nitrogen nor the inoculant influenced the population dynamics of the tillers in Marandu palisade grass.

Avaliaram-se, em esquema factorial 2x2, o efeito das silagens de dois híbridos de milho (A: Agromen - AGN35-A42; B:Bayer - A3663) e dois níveis de concentrado (25 e 50%) sobre o desempenho animal. Para avaliar o consumo, a digestibilidade e o desempenho animal, utilizaram-se 24 novilhos cruzados, Holandês x Zebu, com média de peso de 335±30kg, distribuídos em seis blocos ao acaso. Os tratamentos consistiram em 75% de silagem de milho A + 25% de concentrado; 50% de silagem de milho A + 50% de concentrado; 75% de silagem de milho B + 25% de concentrado; e 50% de silagem de milho B + 50% de concentrado (na base de matéria seca) e foram formulados para serem isonitrogenados (13% proteína bruta). Não houve diferenças entre os consumos diários de matéria seca, matéria orgânica e proteína bruta. Houve efeito de concentrado sobre os consumos de carboidratos não-fibrosos e nutrientes digestíveis totais, e sobre as digestibilidades da matéria seca e da matéria orgânica. O maior consumo foi observado em animais alimentados com dietas que continham 50% de concentrado. Entretanto, o ganho de peso diário não foi influenciado pelos tratamentos. A utilização de silagem dos dois híbridos de milho associada a 25% de concentrado é uma alternativa para reduzir o custo de dietas para novilhos em confinamento, com ganho de peso diário próximo a 1kg.

A trial involving a 2x2 factorial arrangement of treatments was conducted to evaluate two corn silage hybrids (Agromen, AGN35-A42) and (Bayer, A3663) and concentrate levels (25 and 50%) on animal performance. Twenty-four Holstein x Zebu crossbred steers, averaging 335±30kg of BW, were distributed in six randomized blocks to evaluate intake, digestibility, and performance. Treatments consisted of 75% corn silage A + 25% concentrate, 50% corn silage A + 50% concentrate, 75% corn silage B + 25% concentrate, and 50% corn silage B + 50% concentrate (dry matter basis); formulated to be isonitrogenous (13% crude protein, dry matter basis). There were no differences in the daily intakes of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and crude protein. Additionally, there was a concentrate effect on non-fiber carbohydrates and total digestible nutrients intakes, and on total apparent digestibility of DM and OM, with higher intakes for steers fed diets with 50% of concentrate. However, average daily gain (ADG) was not influenced by treatments. The utilization of both corn silage hybrids in association with 25% of concentrate is a good option to feed crossbred steers with ADG close to 1.0kg in order to reduce diet cost.

Realizou-se um estudo com quatro novilhos cruzados Holandês x Nelore (225±22kg de peso vivo), canulados no rúmen e abomaso, distribuídos em quadrado latino 4 x 4 para avaliar o efeito de diferentes proporções de silagem de Braquiária brizantha e silagem de sorgo sobre o consumo e a digestibilidade dos nutrientes no trato digestório total e parcial, sobre os parâmetros ruminais e sobre a eficiência microbiana. As dietas continham 60% de volumoso e 40% de concentrado e foram formuladas para serem isonitrogenadas (12,5% de proteína bruta na matéria seca). Os tratamentos consistiram em diferentes proporções de silagens de Brachiaria brizantha e de sorgo: 100:0; 67:33; 33:67 e 0:100%, respectivamente (% da matéria seca). O consumo de matéria seca, matéria orgânica, proteína bruta, extrato etéreo, carboidratos não-fibrosos e nutrientes digestíveis totais aumentou linearmente (P<0,01) com o aumento da proporção de silagem de sorgo. A digestibilidade total da matéria seca, da matéria orgânica e da fibra em detergente neutro também aumentou linearmente (P<0,02) com o aumento da proporção de silagem de sorgo. A máxima concentração de N-amoniacal ruminal (13,63mg/dL) ocorreu 2,94 horas após a alimentação enquanto o menor pH foi observado às 5,21 horas após a alimentação. A eficiência microbina não foi afetada pelos tratamentos (P>0,05). O uso de 67% de silagem de sorgo com 33% de silagem de braquiária aumentou o consumo e a digestibilidade dos nutrientes sem afetar o pH e N-amoniacal ruminais, bem como a eficiência microbiana.

A trial was carried out with four Holstein x Nellore crossbred steers (225±22kg of BW) fitted with ruminal and abomasal cannulaes in a 4 x 4 Latin Square design to evaluate the intake and the total and partial apparent digestibilities of nutrients, ruminal parameters, and microbial synthesis. Diets consisted of 60% silage and 40% concentrate formulated to be isonitrogenous (12.5% of crude protein, dry matter basis). Treatments consisted of different proportions of Brachiaria brizantha grass silage and sorghum silage: 100:0; 67:33; 33:67, and 0:100%, respectively, on dry matter basis. The intake of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract, non-fiber carbohydrates, and total digestible nutrients linearly increased (P<0.01) as levels of sorghum silage increased. The total apparent digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, and neutral detergent fiber linearly increased with sorghum silage levels (P<0.02). The highest ruminal NH3-N (13.63mg/dL) levels occurred at 2.94h post-feeding whereas the lowest ruminal pH (5.87) was measured at 5.21h post-feeding. Microbial efficiency was not affected (P>0.05) by the treatments. The use of 67% of sorghum silage and 33% of grass silage increased intake and digestibility of nutrients without affecting ruminal pH, ruminal NH3-N, and microbial efficiency.
