Nuclear proliferation marker MIB-1 (Ki-67) immunohistochemistry (IHC) is used to examine tumor cell proliferation. However, the diagnostic or prognostic value of the Ki-67 nuclear staining intensity and location, defined as nuclear gradient (NG), has not been assessed. This study examined the potential association between Ki-67 NG and cell cycle phases and its effect on the prognosis of pulmonary typical carcinoid (PTC) tumors. We propose a method for classifying the NG of Ki-67 during the cell cycle and compare the results between PTC, pulmonary adenocarcinoma (PAD), and breast ductal carcinoma (BDC). A literature review and objective analysis of IHC-stained paraffin sections were used to determine the Ki-67 labeling index and composed a stratification of the NG into NG1, NG2, and NG3/4 categories. A semi-automated image analysis protocol was established to determine the Ki-67 NG in PTC, PAD, and BDC. High intraobserver consistency and moderate interobserver agreement were achieved in the determination of Ki-67 NG in tumor specimens. NG1 and NG2 were lower in PTC than in PAD and BDC. Cox multivariate analysis of PTC after adjusting for age and number of metastatic lymph nodes showed that Ki-67 NG1 and NG2 significantly predicted clinical outcomes. The semi-automated method for quantification of Ki-67 nuclear immunostaining proposed in this study could become a valuable diagnostic and prognostic tool in PTC.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a relevant physiological variable for the estimation of cardiac autonomic function. Although the gold standard for HRV registration is the electrocardiogram (ECG), several applications (APPs) have been increasingly developed. The evaluation carried out by these devices must be compatible with ECG standards. The aim of this study was to compare the data obtained simultaneously with ECG and APP with chest heart rate transmitters. Fifty-six healthy individuals (28 men and 28 women) were evaluated at rest through a short simultaneous HRV measurement with both devices. Data from both acquisition systems were analyzed separately using their own analysis software and exported and analyzed using a validated software. Signal recordings were compatible between the two acquisition systems (Pearson r=0.99; P<0.0001). Although a high correlation was found for the HRV variables obtained in the time domain (Spearman r=0.99; P<0.0001), the correlation decreased in the frequency domain (Pearson r=0.85; P<0.0001) when two software programs were used. Comparison of the averages of spectral analysis parameters also showed differences when HRV data were analyzed separately in each device for low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) bands. Although the portability of these mobile devices allows for optimal HRV evaluation, the direct analysis obtained from these devices must be carefully evaluated with respect to frequency domain parameters.

Oil Spill Disaster in Southwest Atlantic Coast: an Evaluation of Short-Term Effects on Coral Reef Benthic Assemblages

Abstract Oil pollution has significantly contributed to coral reef decline in the last five decades and a major oil spill reached Brazilian tropical coast in August 2019. Here, we report the first evidence of direct crude oil contact from that spill on reef coral species, and evaluate the effects of this disaster on coral vitality and benthic assemblage structure on the largest coastal marine protected area (MPA Costa dos Corais) in Brazil. We compared benthic cover in reefs with and without oil and monitored Siderastrea stellata colonies 90 days after oil contact. Oil stains between 0.5 and 150 cm were found in two of the 17 reef sites investigated. Multivariate analyses did not detect significant differences between oiled and non-oiled reefs and there was no evidence of S. stellata health deterioration. These results indicate minimal acute effects on coral vitality and intertidal reef benthic assemblage structure. Future studies should investigate oil effects on specific aspects of coral biology as growth, reproduction, bleaching susceptibility and metagenomics which can deteriorate over longer time frames, and we recommend long-term coral reef monitoring to support a robust assessment and mitigation of chronic oil impacts.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

Abstract Periodontal disease is considered the main oral cavity disorder in dogs. Essential oils have the potential for use in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. The antimicrobial activity of Schinus molle L. essential oil (SMEO) has already been reported. Chitosan, a natural product with antimicrobial activity and good biocompatibility has potential in biodental applications. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial activity of SMEO against bacteria associated with periodontal disease in dogs, developed and evaluated the physicochemical properties of a novel chitosan-based buccal delivery system containing SMEO. SMEO showed antimicrobial activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria associated with canine periodontitis, with MIC values of 750 µg.mL-1 for Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp, 1000 µg.mL-1 for Corynebacterium spp. and 1250 µg.mL-1 for Pseudomonas spp. All formulations evaluated presented adequate physicochemical properties, good stability, and pH values close to buccal pH (5.0–7.0). Chitosan gel loaded with SMEO showed potential as a SMEO delivery system, having the ideal physicochemical and rheological properties (pseudoplastic and apparent viscosities) required for application on buccal tissue. Thus, we can conclude that formulation has the potential to be used for buccal mucosa delivery in the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease in dogs.

Abstract The order Charadriiformes comprises three major clades: Lari and Scolopaci as sister group to Charadrii. Until now, only three Charadriiformes species have been studied by chromosome painting: Larus argentatus (Lari), Burhinus oedicnemus and Vanellus chilensis (Charadrii). Hence, there is a lack of information concerning the third clade, Scolapaci. Based on this, and to gain a better understanding of karyotype evolution in the order Charadriiformes, we applied conventional and molecular cytogenetic approaches in a species belonging to clade Scolopaci - the wattled jacana (Jacana jacana) - using Gallus gallus and Zenaida auriculata chromosome-specific probes. Cross-species evaluation of J. jacana chromosomes shows extensive genomic reshuffling within macrochromosomes during evolution, with multiple fission and fusion events, although the diploid number remains at high level (2n=82). Interestingly, this species does not have the GGA7-8 fusion, which was found in two representatives of Charadrii clade, reinforcing the idea that this fusion may be exclusive to the Charadrii clade. In addition, it is shown that the chromosome evolution in Charadriiformes is complex and resulted in species with typical and atypical karyotypes. The karyotypic features of Scolopaci are very different from those of Charadrii and Lari, indicating that after divergence, each suborder has undergone different chromosome rearrangements.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o efeito da administração de pST sobre o metabolismo, o tamanho testicular e a qualidade espermática de cachaços jovens. Foram usados leitões com 22 dias de idade, divididos em dois grupos: pST (n=30) e controle (n=30). O grupo pST foi submetido a injeções de pST (90µg/kg de peso vivo) a cada três dias até 330 dias de idade. Peso testicular foi avaliado aos 22, 82, 142, 202 e 365 dias de idade. Libido e qualidade do sêmen fresco foram avaliados entre 150 e 210 dias de idade. Qualidade espermática foi avaliada durante refrigeração (15ºC) por um período de 72 horas. Concentrações sanguíneas de testosterona, albumina e fósforo foram maiores no grupo pST (P<0,05). O grupo pST apresentou maior concentração de IGF-I no plasma seminal (P=0,05) e maior peso testicular, quando comparado ao grupo controle (P<0,001). O grupo pST apresentou maior volume espermático (P<0,001), concentração espermática (P=0,047) e número de doses espermáticas por ejaculado (P=0,047). Durante o período de 72 horas de refrigeração, o grupo pST teve menor número de patologias espermáticas (P<0,001). Assim, conclui-se que a administração de pST aumenta a concentração sanguínea de testosterona, o tamanho testicular e a qualidade espermática de cachaços jovens.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pST injections on metabolism, testicular size, and sperm characteristics in young boars. Sixty 22-day old piglets were divided into two groups: pST (n=30) and Control (n=30). The pST group was submitted to pST injections (90µg/kg body weight) every three days up to 330 days of age. Blood collections were performed weekly. Testicular weight was measures at 22, 82, 142, 202 and 365 days of age. Libido and fresh semen characteristics were evaluated between 150 and 210 days of age. Semen characteristics were also evaluated during a 72h storage period (15ºC). Testosterone, albumin, and phosphorus blood concentrations were higher in the pST group (P<0.05). The pST group had a higher IGF-I concentration in seminal plasma (P=0.05) and higher testicular weight (P<0.001) compared to the Control group. The pST group had higher ejaculate volume (P<0.001), total sperm count (P=0.047) and number of inseminating doses/ejaculate (P=0.047). During the 72h storage period, the pST group had a lower number of morphological alterations (P<0.001) compared to the Control group. In sum, pST injection in young boars increased testosterone concentration, testicular size, and sperm quality.

RESUMO: Herbicidas são insumos com grande volume de utilização nos sistemas de produção agrícola para o manejo de plantas daninhas; no entanto, a contaminação ambiental causada é uma realidade. Objetivou-se com esta pesquisa avaliar a tolerância de espécies arbóreas fitorremediadoras de herbicidas no solo, aos herbicidas atrazine, clomazone e 2,4-D, através da avaliação de índices fotossintéticos. Dessa forma, um experimento em delineamento de blocos casualizados foi montado com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial 4 x 5. O primeiro fator representou os herbicidas atrazine, clomazone e 2,4-D e o tratamento controle sem herbicida (água). O segundo fator consistiu no uso de espécies arbóreas pré-selecionadas para fitorremediação de solos com resíduos dos produtos [Eremanthus crotonoides DC. (candeia) - Richeria grandis Vahl (richéria), Protium heptaphyllum (Aubl) Marchand (breu-branco), Kielmeyera latrophyton Saddi, Kew Bull (pau-santo), Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess (landi)]. Os herbicidas foram aplicados em pratos de contenção sob os recipientes de cultivo das plantas, quando estas apresentavam oito meses de desenvolvimento. Quinze dias após o termino da aplicação dos herbicidas, foram avaliadas a intoxicação visual, condutância estomática (Gs), taxa de transpiração (E), concentração de CO2 na câmara subestomática (Ci), taxa fotossintética (A) e eficiência do uso da água (EUA). Os herbicidas afetaram de forma diferenciada as características fisiológicas das espécies arbóreas, sendo o atrazine o produto mais prejudicial. Indivíduos sob efeito de 2,4-D e clomazone apresentaram menor variação para as características fisiológicas, comparados às respectivas testemunhas. O breu-branco, apesar de mostrar baixa intoxicação visual proporcionada pelos herbicidas, foi a espécie mais afetada pelos produtos. De maneira contrária, a candeia foi a espécie mais tolerante à ação dos herbicidas.
ABSTRACT: Herbicides are inputs with a high volume of use in agricultural production systems for weed management; however, the environmental contamination they cause is a reality. The objective of this research was to evaluate the tolerance of tree species used for the phytoremediation of herbicides in the soil, to atrazine, clomazone and 2,4-D, through the evaluation of photosynthetic indices. Thus, a randomized block design experiment was conducted with four replications, in a 4 x 5 factorial arrangement, where the first factor represented the herbicides atrazine, clomazone and 2,4-D and the control treatment without herbicide (water). The second factor consisted in the use of pre-selected tree species for the phytoremediation of soils with residues of the products [Eremanthus crotonoides DC. (candeia), - Richeria grandis Vahl (richeria), Protium heptaphyllum (Aubl) Marchand, (breu-branco) Kielmeyera latrophyton Saddi, Kew Bull, (pau-santo) Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess (guanandi)]. The herbicides were applied through dishes placed under the culture containers of the plants, when they presented eight months of development. After 15 days from the herbicide application, the visual intoxication, stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (E), CO2 concentration in the substomatal chamber (Ci), and water use efficiency (WUE) were evaluated. The herbicides affected differently the physiological characteristics of the tree species; atrazine was the most harmful product. Individuals under the effect of 2,4-D and clomazone presented lower variation for their physiological characteristics, compared to the respective control treatments. Breu-branco, despite showing low visual intoxication provided by the herbicides, was the most affected species by the products. On the other hand, candeia was the most tolerant species to the action of the herbicides.

As plantas usadas pela indústria requerem tecnologias de conservação e descontaminação eficazes a fim de garantir a sua utilização nas melhores condições. A irradiação é uma tecnologia capaz de descontaminar as plantas, mantendo as propriedades químicas, organoléticas, nutricionais e bioativas. Neste estudo avaliaram-se os efeitos da irradiação gama relativamente nas propriedades químicas, nutricionais e antioxidantes de várias plantas aromáticas e medicinais. Em geral, uma comparação entre as amostras não-irradiadas (controlo) e irradiadas mostrou que o tratamento por irradiação não causou alterações suficientes para definir um perfil químico específico. Assim, a irradiação gama (até 10 kGy) é uma tecnologia viável para as espécies estudadas.
Plants used by the industry require effective conservation and decontamination technologies in order to ensure their use in the best conditions. Irradiation is a technology for plants decontamination that maintains their chemical, organoleptic, nutritional and bioactive properties. This study evaluated the effects of gamma irradiation on chemical, nutritional and antioxidants properties of several medicinal and aromatic plants. In general, a comparison between non-irradiated (control) and irradiated samples showed that irradiation treatment did not originate a specific chemical profile. Thus, gamma irradiation (up to 10 kGy) is a viable technology for the studied species.

Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) or spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by expansion of the polyglutamine domain of the ataxin-3 (ATX3) protein. MJD/SCA3 is the most frequent autosomal dominant ataxia in many countries. The mechanism underlying MJD/SCA3 is thought to be mainly related to protein misfolding and aggregation leading to neuronal dysfunction followed by cell death. Currently, there are no effective treatments for patients with MJD/SCA3. Here, we report on the potential use of lithium carbonate and coenzyme Q10 to reduce cell death caused by the expanded ATX3 in cell culture. Cell viability and apoptosis were evaluated by MTT assay and by flow cytometry after staining with annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide. Treatment with lithium carbonate and coenzyme Q10 led to a significant increase in viability of cells expressing expanded ATX3 (Q84). In addition, we found that the increase in cell viability resulted from a significant reduction in the proportion of apoptotic cells. Furthermore, there was a significant change in the expanded ATX3 monomer/aggregate ratio after lithium carbonate and coenzyme Q10 treatment, with an increase in the monomer fraction and decrease in aggregates. The safety and tolerance of both drugs are well established; thus, our results indicate that lithium carbonate and coenzyme Q10 are good candidates for further in vivo therapeutic trials.

The semipalmated sandpiper Calidris pusilla and the spotted sandpiper Actitis macularia are long- and short-distance migrants, respectively. C. pusilla breeds in the sub-arctic and mid-arctic tundra of Canada and Alaska and winters on the north and east coasts of South America. A. macularia breeds in a broad distribution across most of North America from the treeline to the southern United States. It winters in the southern United States, and Central and South America. The autumn migration route of C. pusilla includes a non-stop flight over the Atlantic Ocean, whereas autumn route of A. macularia is largely over land. Because of this difference in their migratory paths and the visuo-spatial recognition tasks involved, we hypothesized that hippocampal volume and neuronal and glial numbers would differ between these two species. A. macularia did not differ from C. pusilla in the total number of hippocampal neurons, but the species had a larger hippocampal formation and more hippocampal microglia. It remains to be investigated whether these differences indicate interspecies differences or neural specializations associated with different strategies of orientation and navigation.

O tamanho da semente e seu grau de dormência foram estudados em 20 matrizes de duas populações de Schizolobium parahyba, visando avaliar como estas características se distribuem entre e dentro de populações e qual a influência da morfometria na capacidade de germinação da espécie. As populações são procedentes da região litorânea (Paraty) e montanhosa (Miguel Pereira) no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. As características morfométricas (comprimento, largura, espessura e massa) foram medidas e a germinação com e sem tratamento de quebra de dormência (escarificação mecânica) foi avaliada em um teste de emergência com delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Todas as variáveis morfométricas diferiram significativamente entre indivíduos e entre populações. As matrizes da região montanhosa apresentaram maior tamanho da semente e um menor nível de dormência do que aquelas localizadas na região litorânea. O tamanho da semente não influenciou a germinação das sementes e o desenvolvimento das plântulas. A influência do clima na seleção do comportamento germinativo da espécie foi discutido com base nos resultados obtidos.
Seed size and dormancy level were studied in 20 trees from two populations of Schizolobium parahybato evaluate how these characteristics occurbetween and within populations, and whether seed germination was affected by its morphometry. These two populations are located in the coastal (Paraty) or mountain (Miguel Pereira) regions in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The seed morphometrictraits (length, width, thickness and weight) were measured. Germination with or without seedcoatdormancy treatment (mechanical scarification) wasassessedbya randomized emergence test in nursey. All morphometric traits differed significantly among individuals and between populations. The trees from the mountain region showed a larger seed size and a lower dormancy level than that of trees from the coastal region. Seed size had no effect on seed germination or seedling development. Climate influence on the determination of germination behavior is discussed based on the results.

RESUMO No Brasil, a família Malvaceae está representada por aproximadamente 200 espécies e algumas foram descritas como gastroproteroras. Pavonia alnifolia A.St.-Hil. (Malvaceae) foi selecionada após uma abordagem quimiossistemática, considerando-se sua potencial capacidade em prevenir lesões gástricas. Assim, a atividade gastroprotetora do extrato etanólico de caules de P. alnifolia foi avaliada utilizando o modelo de indução aguda da lesão gástrica por etanol acidificado em camundongos. Além disso, foram quantificados o teor de flavonóides, pelo método de cloreto de alumínio, e de polifenóis, pelo método Folin-Ciocalteu, uma vez que a relação desses componentes com a proteção gástrica foi evidenciada. Os ensaios apontaram redução acentuada das lesões gástricas em camundongos tratados com o extrato da planta em todas as doses ensaiadas (10, 100 e 300 mg/kg). Esse efeito pode estar relacionado com a presença de polifenóis, cujo teor encontrado foi 74,3 ± 7,5 μg equivalente de pirogalol/mg do material vegetal examinado e 82,7 ± 7,1 μg equivalente de pirogalol /mg da amostra no extrato preparado por percolação e teor de flavonoides totais, que por sua vez apresentou um resultado de 17,1 ± 1,4 μg/mg de extrato. O extrato apresentou proteção da mucosa gástrica e este efeito pode estar relacionado à presença dos polifenóis e flavonóides encontrados.
ABSTRACT In Brazil, the Malvaceae family is represented by at about 200 species. Some of those species are known as gastro protective ones. The Pavonia alnifolia A.St.-Hil (Malvaceae) was selected after a chemosystematic approach. The gastro preventive activity of the ethanol extract of stems Pavonia alnifolia was evaluated through the use of the Ethanol:chlroridric acid model on mice. The quantification of the total flavonoids (aluminum chloride method) and total polyphenols (Folin-Ciocalteu method) was also performed since the relation of those components with gastric protection has been previously highlighted. The tests showed a significant reduction of the ulcer formation in the mice treated with the plant extract (10, 100 and 300 mg/kg). This effect may be related to the presence of polyphenols whose content was found to be 74.3 ± 7.5 μg/mg of vegetal material and 82.7 ± 7.1 μg/mg of crude extract and flavonoids, which in turn showed a content of 17.1 ± 1.4 μg/mg dry extract.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o desempenho de quatro linhagens (L1, L2, L3 e L4) de codornas de corte em cruzamentos dialélicos. O presente estudo foi realizado nas instalações do Programa de Melhoramento de Codornas do Departamento de Zootecnia da UFVJM, no período de 16 de dezembro de 2011 a 26 de janeiro de 2012. Foram avaliados o peso corporal médio ao nascimento, aos 35 e aos 42 dias de idade; o consumo médio de dieta e a conversão alimentar do nascimento aos 35 dias e do nascimento aos 42 dias de idade. As análises dialélicas foram desenvolvidas de forma univariada, considerando-se a metodologia de dialelos completos, a partir das médias das combinações genotípicas resultantes de um experimento inteiramente ao acaso com três repetições. A capacidade geral de combinação foi significativa para todas as características avaliadas, com exceção do consumo médio de dieta e da conversão alimentar do nascimento aos 35 dias de idade. Houve efeito significativo da capacidade específica de combinação sobre o peso corporal ao nascimento (L2xL3; L2xL4; L1xL4); conversão alimentar do nascimento aos 35 dias (L1xL3; L2xL4) e do nascimento aos 42 dias (L1xL3; L2xL3; L2xL4); consumo médio de dieta do nascimento aos 35 dias de idade (L1xL3; L2xL3), o que permitiu a identificação de combinações híbridas mais favoráveis. O efeito recíproco foi significativo apenas sobre o peso ao nascimento. Com base na capacidade geral de combinação, as linhagens mais favoráveis para peso corporal foram a L1 e a L2. Para a conversão alimentar, pela capacidade específica de combinação, os cruzamentos L1xL3 e L2xL4 apresentaram o melhor resultado, enquanto para o consumo de dieta do nascimento aos 35 dias de idade, os cruzamentos L1xL3 e L2xL3 são os mais indicados.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of four strains of meat type quails, designated L1, L2, L3 and L4 in diallel crosses. This study was carried out at the premises of the Genetic Improvement Program for Quails of UFVJM, from December 2011 to May 2012. The average body weight at hatch, at 35 and at 42 days old, the average daily feed intake at 35 and at 42 days old, and feed conversion at 35 and 42 days old were evaluated. Diallel analyzes were developed using univariate analyses, considering the methodology of complete diallel, from the average of the genotype combinations resulting in a complete randomized design with three replications. The combining ability analysis revealed significance for general combining ability for all traits, except for average feed intake and feed conversion at 35 days old. There was significant effect of specific combining ability for hatch weight (L2xL3; L2xL4; L1xL4); feed conversion from hatch to 35 days of age (L1xL3; L2xL4), and from hatch to 42 days (L1xL3; L2xL3; L2xL4); and average feed intake from hatch to 35 days of age (L1xL3; L2xL3), thus allowing the identification of more favorable hybrid combinations. The reciprocal effect showed significance only for hatch weight. Based on general combining ability, the strains which are more favorable for increased body weight were L1 and L2. For feed conversion, for the specific combining ability, the crosses L1xL3 and L2xL4 showed the best results, while for feed intake from hatch to 35 days old, the crosses L1xL3 and L2xL3 would be the most suitable.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.
