Abstract The purpose of this article is to report the process of building the international identity of Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), focusing on the Institutional Translation work carried out by its Translation Service at the International Relations Office (SINTER). We present the actions carried out between 2016 and 2022 that have contributed to expanding and standardizing institutional communication in English and giving greater visibility to the institution in the global scenario. Among such actions, we would like to highlight: the translation of institutional websites; the compilation of a Portuguese-English glossary, containing terms relevant to UFSC academic and administrative structure; and the creation of a writing guide in English. These and other complementary actions sought to approach the university community, joining efforts for the process of Comprehensive Internationalization underway at UFSC.

Resumo Este artigo relata o processo de construção da identidade internacional da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), a partir do trabalho de Tradução Institucional realizado pelo Serviço de Tradução da Secretaria de Relações Institucionais (SINTER). Apresentamos as ações realizadas entre 2016 e 2022 que contribuíram para ampliar e uniformizar a comunicação institucional em língua inglesa e dar maior visibilidade à instituição no cenário global. Dentre elas, destacam-se: a tradução de websites institucionais; a disponibilização de um glossário português-inglês, contendo termos relevantes da estrutura acadêmica e administrativa da UFSC; e a elaboração de um guia de redação em língua inglesa. Essas e outras ações complementares buscaram aproximação com a comunidade universitária, unindo-se aos esforços do processo de internacionalização transversal em curso na UFSC.

Abstract Introduction : During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Ar gentina population suffered from significant changes in population mobility due to non-pharmaceutical interventions. The aim of this study was to describe the impact of the mobility restrictions to the rates of positivity and diversity among different respiratory viruses. Methods : Retrospective analytical study per formed at Instituto Médico Platense in La Plata that included 458 patients with nasopharyngeal swab to search for respiratory pathogens by multiplex PCR. Changes in mobility were studied using “Community Mobility Reports”, data set developed by Google and publicly available. Results : Community mobility had significant cor relation with the percentages of viral test positiv ity (p = < 0.01; R2=0.89) and viral diversity (p = 0.04; R2 = 0.78). Discussion : Non-pharmaceutical interventions estab lished to contain SARS-CoV-2 spread had a significant impact in the circulation patterns of other respiratory viruses.

Resumen Introducción : Durante la pandemia de SARS-CoV-2 en Argentina se implementaron intervenciones no farma cológicas que produjeron cambios en la movilidad de la población. El objetivo de este estudio fue relacionar los porcentajes de positividad y la diversidad viral con la movi lidad poblacional durante parte del período de restricciones. Métodos : Estudio retrospectivo analítico realizado en el Instituto Médico Platense durante los años 2020 a 2022 que incluyó 458 pacientes a los que se les tomó un hisopado nasofaríngeo para la búsqueda de patóge nos respiratorios por PCR multiplex. Se analizaron los cambios en la movilidad de la población utilizando los “Informes de Movilidad Local”, herramienta desarrollada por Google, cuyos datos son de público acceso. Resultados : La movilidad poblacional se correlacionó significativamente con el porcentaje de positividad de las muestras (p = <0.01; R2 = 0.89) y la diversidad viral (p = 0.04; R2 = 0.78). Discusión : Las intervenciones no farmacológicas destinadas a limitar la propagación del SARS-CoV-2 tuvieron efecto en la circulación de otros virus respi ratorios, hallándose mayor porcentaje de positividad y diversidad a medida que las mismas disminuyeron su grado de restricción.

Resumo As doenças hepáticas colestáticas podem associar-se a um aumento do colesterol à custa de uma lipoproteína anómala, a lipoproteína X (LpX). Os agentes hipolipemiantes convencionais não apresentam benefício nesta entidade, pelo que o tratamento da hipercolesterolemia associada de LpX baseia-se na correção da causa subjacente da colestase. A plasmaferese pode ser necessária para evitar complicações, como a síndrome de hiperviscosidade. Os autores apresentam o caso de um homem de 44 anos com antecedentes de pseudotumor inflamatório da órbita sob prednisolona, admitido por lesão hepatocelular e colestática e hipercolesterolemia grave. A investigação laboratorial permitiu estabelecer a hepatite E aguda como responsável da lesão hepática e mostrou que a hipercolesterolemia grave foi mediada pela LpX. A redução da carga imunossupressora facilitou a eliminação do vírus da hepatite E. A consequente resolução da colestase coadjuvada pela remoção de colesterol por plasmaferese, permitiu a normalização mantida do perfil lipídico. Os autores relatam o primeiro caso de hipercolesterolemia associada a LpX em contexto de colestase induzida pelo vírus da hepatite E, e revisitam a importância do fígado no metabolismo dos lípidos.

Abstract Cholestatic liver diseases may be associated with increased plasmatic cholesterol due to an abnormal lipoprotein - lipoprotein X (LpX). Correcting the underlying cause of cholestasis is the critical treatment of LpX-associated hypercholesterolemia without any proven benefit from conventional lipidlowering agents. In some situations, plasma exchange may apply to prevent associated complications, such as hyperviscosity syndrome. The authors present the case of a 44-year-old man with orbital inflammatory pseudotumor on prednisolone, admitted due to hepatocellular and cholestatic lesion and severe hypercholesterolemia. Laboratory investigation established that hepatitis E virus was responsible for liver injury and showed that LpX mediated the severe hypercholesterolemia. Reduction of the immunosuppressive load contributed to virus clearance. The consequent resolution of cholestasis and cholesterol removal by plasmapheresis allowed lipid profile normalization. The authors report the first case of LpX-associated hypercholesterolemia in a patient with hepatitis E-induced cholestasis and revisit the role of the liver in lipid metabolism.

Abstract The median nerve is a nervous structure that begins to cross structures at the level of the elbow that might cause compression. The Struthers ligament, lacertus fibrosus, pronator teres, and flexor digitorum superficialis are among them. Finally, the transverse carpal ligament creates another compression site in the wrist. All these structures can develop pathological signs and symptoms of nerve entrapment, which favors nerve functional degradation. Our objective is to provide an update on these median nerve entrapment sites, as well as information on how to establish an accurate diagnosis and provide adequate treatment.

Resumen El nervio mediano desciende por el brazo y, en el codo, comienza a atravesar estructuras que pueden generar compresión, como el ligamento de Struthers, el lacertus fibrosus, el pronador redondo, el flexor superficial de los dedos. Finalmente, en la muñeca, se encuentra otro sitio de compresión producido por el ligamento transverso del carpo. Todas estas estructuras pueden provocar signos y síntomas de atrapamiento nervioso y favorecer el deterioro funcional del nervio. Nuestro objetivo es dar a conocer una actualización sobre estos sitios de atrapamiento del nervio mediano, y cómo realizar un diagnóstico preciso e indicar un tratamiento adecuado.

Resumen En el centro-este de la provincia de Santa Fe (departamentos San Jerónimo, La Capital y Las Colonias) la mala preservación ósea constituye un rasgo característico del registro arqueológico regional. Por este motivo, durante la última década se encuentra en desarrollo una investigación orientada al estudio de la diagénesis ósea a diferentes niveles de organización de los huesos. Parte de la misma estuvo centrada en la generación, mediante el uso de sistemas de información geográfica (SIG), de modelos espaciales de preservación ósea diferencial basados en las propiedades de los suelos. Los modelos generados han sido evaluados, y continúan siéndolo en el presente, con información obtenida del análisis de restos óseos recuperados en sitios arqueológicos del área. En este marco, el objetivo de este trabajo es presentar y discutir versiones ampliadas de tales modelos espaciales para un área que incluye la cuenca media e inferior del río Paraná (provincias de Santa Fe, Entre Ríos y Buenos Aires), con el objetivo de proporcionar un marco adecuado para interpretar la variación en las condiciones de preservación ósea en el sur de la región del Litoral argentino.

Abstract In the east-central portion of the Santa Fe province (San Jerónimo, La Capital and Las Colonias Departments) poor bone preservation is a characteristic feature of the regional archaeological record. Therefore, during the last decade, a study of bone diagenesis at different bone levels has been under development. Part of this research was focused on the construction of predictive spatial models of bone preservation based on the analysis of specific properties of soils using geographic information systems (GIS). These models have been evaluated with information obtained from the analysis of bone remains recovered from regional archaeological sites. On this basis, this paper presents and discusses new predictive maps for a broader coverage area, which includes the Middle and Lower Paraná River basin (Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and Buenos Aires provinces). The aim is to provide an appropriate interpretative framework to discuss the variation in bone preservation conditions in the south of the Litoral region of Argentina.

Resumen Clostridioides difficile es un anaerobio esporulado que se asocia con episodios de diarreas hospitalarias. Su virulencia se encuentra vinculada, principalmente, a las toxinas TcdA y TcdB, codificadas por sus respectivos genes, tcdA y tcdB, que son parte de un locus de patogenicidad (PaLoc). Nuestro objetivo fue caracterizar los toxinotipos de C. difficile circulantes en un hospital público. Los genes tcdA y tcdB fueron amplificados y digeridos con diferentes enzimas de restricción: EcoRI para tcdA; HincII y AccI para tcdB. Además, se evaluó la presencia de cdtB (gen de la toxina binaria B) y de las toxinas A y B (por dot blot), así como el efecto citotóxico de sobrenadantes de cultivo sobre células Vero. En conjunto, estos estudios revelaron tres toxinotipos circulantes según la clasificación de Rupnik: 0, I y VIII; el más prevalente fue el último. Aunque son necesarios más estudios (ej., secuenciación), es interesante notar que la presencia del toxinotipo I podría estar relacionada con la introducción de bacterias de diferente origen geográfico. En los pacientes infectados con el toxinotipo VIII, el análisis multivariante de los resultados de laboratorio mostró que los aislamientos asociados a decesos (GCD13, GCD14 y GCD22) estaban situados en regiones de los biplots relacionados con valores de laboratorio alterados al momento de la internación. En los otros pacientes, aunque no se observó correlación entre los valores de laboratorio al momento de la internación y la evolución clínica, los niveles de urea, creatinina y recuento de glóbulos blancos estuvieron correlacionados positivamente entre sí una vez diagnosticada la infección. Nuestro estudio revela la circulación de diferentes toxinotipos de C. difficile en un mismo hospital público. La variedad de toxinotipos puede originarse a partir de microorganismos preexistentes en la región, así como también por la introducción de bacterias provenientes de otras regiones geográficas. La existencia de microorganismos con diferente potencial patogénico es relevante para el control, el seguimiento y el tratamiento de las infecciones.

Abstract Clostridioides difficile is a spore-forming anaerobe microorganism associated to nosocomial diarrhea. Its virulence is mainly associated with TcdA and TcdB toxins, encoded by their respective tcdA and tcdB genes. These genes are part of the pathogenicity locus (PaLoc). Our aim was to characterize relevant C. difficile toxinotypes circulating in the hospital setting. The tcdA and tcdB genes were amplified and digested with different restriction enzymes: EcoRI for tcdA; HincII and AccI for tcdB. In addition, the presence of the cdtB (binary toxin) gene, TcdA and TcdB toxins by dot blot and the cytotoxic effect of culture supernatants on Vero cells, were evaluated. Altogether, these studies revealed three different circulating toxinotypes according to Rupnik's classification: 0, I and VIII, being the latter the most prevalent one. Even though more studies are certainly necessary (e.g. sequencing analysis), it is worth noting that the occurrence of toxinotype I could be related to the introduction of bacteria from different geographical origins. The multivariate analysis conducted on the laboratory values of individuals infected with the most prevalent toxinotype (VIII) showed that the isolates associated with fatal outcomes (GCD13, GCD14 and GCD22) are located in regions of the biplots related to altered laboratory values at admission. In other patients, although laboratory values at admission were not correlated, levels of urea, creatinine and white blood cells were positively correlated after the infection was diagnosed. Our study reveals the circulation of different toxinotypes of C. difficile strains in this public hospital. The variety of toxinotypes can arise from pre-existing microorganisms as well as through the introduction of bacteria from other geographical regions. The existence of microorganisms with different pathogenic potential is relevant for the control, follow-up, and treatment of the infections.

Resumen Introducción y objetivos : El aumento de plantas invasoras en ecosistemas de altura amenaza la conservación de la biodiversidad y de los servicios ecosistémicos en áreas protegidas de montaña. En este trabajo evaluamos si una leñosa exótica, Cotoneaster franchetii Bois, responde a la heterogeneidad ambiental de manera similar a la leñosa nativa dominante, Polylepis australis Bitter, o si puede ocupar una mayor variedad de hábitats dado el carácter generalista que se espera de ella. M&M : Registramos la ocurrencia y cobertura de ambas especies en 120 parcelas entre los 1200 y los 2200 msnm, dentro y en inmediaciones del Parque Nacional Quebrada del Condorito y la Reserva Hídrica Pampa de Achala (Córdoba, Argentina). Comparamos su distribución en relación con la vegetación y la topografía. Resultados : Cada especie dominó en altitudes diferentes pero, a escala local, ambas fueron más frecuentes en valles y laderas sur, con menor cobertura de pajonal y mayor cobertura rocosa y pendiente. Al contrario que la nativa, la cobertura de C. franchetii no se vio afectada por las características topográficas ni de la vegetación circundante. Conclusiones : La elevada ocurrencia de C. franchetii y la ausencia de restricciones para aumentar su cobertura una vez establecida sugieren un elevado potencial invasor. Su expansión representa un riesgo directo para P. australis por preferir hábitats similares. Al igual que en la expansión altitudinal, una elevada tolerancia ambiental promovería la invasión por leñosas hacia la vegetación natural en montañas.

Summary Background and aims : Invasive plants succeeding at high-elevation ecosystems threaten biodiversity and ecosystem services conservation in mountain protected areas. In this study we assessed whether an exotic woody species, Cotoneaster franchetii Bois, responds to mountain environmental heterogeneity in a similar way to the dominant coexisting native woody species, Polylepis australis Bitter, or if it instead occupies a greater variety of habitats aided by the wide environmental tolerance expected for mountain invaders. M&M : We recorded C. franchetii and P australis occurrence and cover in 120 square plots between 1200 and 2200 masl, inside and surrounding “Quebrada del Condorito” National Park and “Pampa de Achala” natural reserve (Córdoba, Argentina). We compared both species' distribution and its relationship with vegetation and topograpy. Results : Each species dominated at different elevations. However, at local scale, both species were more frequent in plots placed at valleys and south-facing steep slopes, with less cover of tussock grassland and more rock cover. Contrary to the native species, C. franchetii cover was unaffected by vegetation and topographic characteristics. Conclusions : High occurrence and no restrictions for increasing cover once established suggest a high spread potential of C. franchetii in these mountains. Polylepis australis is seemingly at risk since both species share habitat preferences. Wide environmental tolerance would not only trigger upward expansion of invasive species in mountains but also towards natural vegetation.

Eugenia punicifolia (Kunth) DC, known as “pedra ume-caá” or “pitanguinha do cerrado”, is popularly used to treat infectious diseases like inflammation, and diabetes. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and validate an analytical method by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) for the seasonal quantification of gallic acid (GA) and ellagic acid (EA), and to co-validate the method for quantification from the ethanol extract and fractions of the E. punicifolia leaves. Chromatographic separations were performed with a mobile phase gradient of acetonitrile/methanol/water acidified with 0.2% formic acid, a flow of 0.8 mL min 1, detection at 254 nm, and a C18 column (250 × 4.6 mm, 5 µm). Method validation parameters were determined following Brazilian legislation. The HPLC-DAD analytical method developed for the quantification of GA and EA was validated and demonstrated to be selective, linear, precise, accurate, robust, and without matrix effect. Accordingly, it is helpful for the analysis of these tannins in crude ethanol extracts and fractions from E. punicifoila leaves. Thus, our results may be of great help for quality control assessment and standardization of raw materials containing Eugenia punicifolia.

Resumen Introducción: Todavía no se comprende si el desarrollo político, científico y médico en un país se asocia a mejores resultados clínicos de los pacientes con COVID-19 según el sexo. Objetivo: Determinar las tendencias de mortalidad hospitalaria asociada a COVID-19 en mujeres y hombres entre marzo de 2020 y febrero de 2022. Métodos: Se utilizaron los datos clínicos de todos los pacientes con COVID-19 atendidos en 21 hospitales españoles, tanto de quienes fueron dados de alta como de quienes fallecieron durante el ingreso. La asociación entre la fecha del ingreso y la mortalidad se analizó con modelos de regresión logística. Resultados: Fueron incluidos 7974 pacientes, de los cuales 3234 fueron mujeres y 928 fallecieron. Se encontró una tendencia significativa y decreciente en la mortalidad según avanzaba la fecha del ingreso. Cuando el análisis se realizó por sexos, no se halló una tendencia significativa en las mujeres (RM = 0.96 [0.90-1.03], p = 0.239), pero sí en los hombres (RM = 0.87 [0.82-0.92], p < 0.001). Conclusión: Las políticas de salud, junto con las intervenciones clínicas y preventivas, pueden dar cuenta de los resultados. Diferencias en la respuesta al tratamiento o en los comportamientos pueden explicar por qué la mortalidad no disminuye en las mujeres.

Abstract Introduction: Whether political, scientific and medical development in a country is associated with better clinical results according to gender in patients with COVID-19 has not yet been clearly elucidated. Objective: To determine the trends of COVID-19-related in-hospital mortality in women and men from March 2020 to February 2022. Methods: Clinical data of all patients with COVID-19 cared for at 21 Spanish hospitals were used, both of those who were discharged and of those who died during hospitalization. The association between hospital length of stay and mortality was analyzed with logistic regression models. Results: Out of 7,974 patients that were included, 3,234 were women; 928 patients died. A significant decreasing trend in mortality was identified. When the analysis was carried out by gender, no significant mortality trend was found in women (OR = 0.96 [0.90-1.03], p = 0.239), while in men there was a significant decreasing trend identified (OR = 0.87 [0.82-0.92], p < 0.001). Conclusion: Health policies, together with clinical and preventive interventions, may explain these results. Response to treatment and behavioral differences may explain why mortality does not decrease for women.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of pasteurization, lyophilization and spray-drying on the lipid profile of donated human milk (DHM) at different lactation stages. Nine frozen samples of colostrum, transitional and raw mature human milk (HM) were collected from the Human Milk Bank (HMB) of the Hospital Universitário de Maringá (HUM). Samples were thawed and pooled according to lactation stage. Thereafter, it was submitted to pasteurization, lyophilization and spray-drying processes and later the fatty acid (FA) composition and the lipid profile analyses were performed. Gas chromatograph (GC) with flame ionization detector (FID) and electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometer (MS) were used, respectively. In the FA composition analysis, it was observed that the same classes of saturated FA (SFA), monounsaturated FA (MUFA) and polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) were preserved throughout the process and in all lactation stages. The lipid profiles were also preserved after processing. Therefore, the lyophilization and spray-drying processes are promising techniques to preserve the DHM in the HMB, once the components evaluated were preserved, and both techniques facilitate the transport and storage, as the techniques reduce the sample volume.

Abstract Background Despite representing the largest fraction of animal life, the number of insect species whose genome has been sequenced is barely in the hundreds. The order Dermaptera (the earwigs) suffers from a lack of genomic information despite its unique position as one of the basally derived insect groups and its importance in agroecosystems. As part of a national educational and outreach program in genomics, a plan was formulated to engage the participation of high school students in a genome sequencing project. Students from twelve schools across Chile were instructed to capture earwig specimens in their geographical area, to identify them and to provide material for genome sequencing to be carried out by themselves in their schools. Results The school students collected specimens from two cosmopolitan earwig species: Euborellia annulipes (Fam. Anisolabididae) and Forficula auricularia (Fam. Forficulidae). Genomic DNA was extracted and, with the help of scientific teams that traveled to the schools, was sequenced using nanopore sequencers. The sequence data obtained for both species was assembled and annotated. We obtained genome sizes of 1.18 Gb (F. auricularia) and 0.94 Gb (E. annulipes) with the number of predicted protein coding genes being 31,800 and 40,000, respectively. Our analysis showed that we were able to capture a high percentage (≥ 93%) of conserved proteins indicating genomes that are useful for comparative and functional analysis. We were also able to characterize structural elements such as repetitive sequences and non-coding RNA genes. Finally, functional categories of genes that are overrepresented in each species suggest important differences in the process underlying the formation of germ cells, and modes of reproduction between them, features that are one of the distinguishing biological properties that characterize these two distant families of Dermaptera. Conclusions This work represents an unprecedented instance where the scientific and lay community have come together to collaborate in a genome sequencing project. The versatility and accessibility of nanopore sequencers was key to the success of the initiative. We were able to obtain full genome sequences of two important and widely distributed species of insects which had not been analyzed at this level previously. The data made available by the project should illuminate future studies on the Dermaptera.

Resumo Embora a distribuição e a riqueza em espécies arbóreas nas fitofisionomias do Cerrado venham sendo bastante estudadas, a transição entre savanas e florestas deciduais ainda não foi abordada. Investigamos o efeito de características físico-químicas do solo sobre a distribuição de espécies arbóreas em região de contato entre cerrado sentido restrito e floresta estacional decidual (FED). As espécies arbóreas foram amostradas sistematicamente, e variáveis de topografia e características do solo foram medidas em 30 parcelas de 10×40 m, sendo 15 parcelas em cada fisionomia. A distribuição das espécies arbóreas foi espacialmente estruturada, e as características do solo diferiram entre as áreas de cerrado sentido restrito e FED, principalmente relacionadas à saturação de alumínio, saturação de bases e teores de fósforo. A saturação de alumínio aumentou em direção ao cerrado sentido restrito, enquanto a saturação de bases aumentou em direção à FED. A maioria das espécies arbóreas predominou em uma das fisionomias, como Callisthene major em cerrado sentido restrito e Anadenanthera colubrina em FED. Apenas 20% das espécies foram amplamente distribuídas em ambas as fisionomias ou, em poucos casos, restritas aos valores intermediários do gradiente de solo. Os resultados indicam um forte contraste de características do solo entre o cerrado sentido restrito e a FED, assim como uma transição acentuada e espacialmente organizada quanto à distribuição de espécies arbóreas.

Abstract Although richness and distribution of woody species in the Cerrado physiognomies have been extensively studied, the shifts of woody species from savanna physiognomies to dry forests have not yet been addressed. Here, we investigate the effect of soil physical-chemical traits on the woody species turnover between adjacent cerrado stricto sensu and dry forest physiognomies. Woody species were surveyed, and soil and topographic variables measured, in 30 10×40 m plots systematically distributed, with 15 plots in each physiognomy. We found a spatially structured distribution of woody species, and differences of soil traits between cerrado stricto sensu and dry forest areas, mainly related to the aluminum saturation, base saturation, and available phosphorus. Aluminum saturation increased toward the savanna area, while base saturation increased toward the dry forest. Most woody species predominated in one physiognomy, such as Callisthene major in the cerrado stricto sensu and Anadenanthera colubrina in the dry forest. Only 20% of the species were widely distributed across both physiognomies or, not often, restricted to the intermediary values of the soil gradient. General results indicate that contrasting soil traits between cerrado stricto sensu and dry forest produce a strongly spatially organized and sharp transition in terms of species distribution between these physiognomies.

Abstract Objective: To assess factors associated with emotional changes and Hyperactivity/Inattention (HI) motivated by COVID-19 quarantine in adolescents with immunocompromising diseases. Methods: A cross-sectional study included 343 adolescents with immunocompromising diseases and 108 healthy adolescents. Online questionnaires were answered including socio-demographic data and self-rated healthcare routine during COVID-19 quarantine and validated surveys: Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 (PedsQL4.0). Results: The frequencies of abnormal emotional SDQ scores from adolescents with chronic diseases were similar to those of healthy subjects (110/343 [32%] vs. 38/108 [35%], p = 0.548), as well as abnormal hyperactivity/inattention SDQ scores (79/343 [23%] vs. 29/108 [27%], p = 0.417). Logistic regression analysis of independent variables associated with abnormal emotional scores from adolescents with chronic diseases showed: female sex (Odds Ratio [OR = 3.76]; 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) 2.00–7.05; p < 0.001), poor sleep quality (OR = 2.05; 95% CI 1.08–3.88; p = 0.028) and intrafamilial violence during pandemic (OR = 2.17; 95% CI 1.12–4.19; p = 0.021) as independently associated with abnormal emotional scores, whereas total PedsQL score was inversely associated with abnormal emotional scores (OR = 0.95; 95% CI 0.93–0.96; p < 0.0001). Logistic regression analysis associated with abnormal HI scores from patients evidenced that total PedsQL score (OR = 0.97; 95% CI 0.95–0.99; p = 0.010], changes in medical appointments during the pandemic (OR = 0.39; 95% CI 0.19–0.79; p = 0.021), and reliable COVID-19 information (OR = 0.35; 95% CI 0.16–0.77; p = 0.026) remained inversely associated with abnormal HI scores. Conclusion: The present study showed emotional and HI disturbances in adolescents with chronic immunosuppressive diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. It reinforces the need to promptly implement a longitudinal program to protect the mental health of adolescents with and without chronic illnesses during future pandemics.

Abstract Aiming to produce an antimicrobial dressing for wound healing applications, in this work Tea Tree oil (TTO) was incorporated into PHBV nanofibers by absorption. It was observed increase in the nanofiber diameter due to 5% TTO absorption efficiency, which also led to a 54% decrease in the contact angle. The releasing assay indicates a 6.8% oil release in the first 24 h – being probably the oil deposited at the polymer surface – followed by a minimal release at 48 h. The set of antimicrobial assays performed suggests the incorporation of TTO optimized the antimicrobial activity of the polymer for E. coli and C. albicans, while against S. aureus no significant difference was observed. The MTT assay showed no cytotoxicity of PHBV, but the incubation of L929 fibroblast cells with PHBV-TTO reduced cell viability. Overall, the PHBV nanofibers containing TTO present great potential as an antimicrobial dressing.

Abstract The litter deposited on the soil surface at various stages of decomposition is important for primary productivity that impacts the microbial communities and soil carbon storage. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accumulation and decomposition of cultural residues of Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. ex. Spreng) Schum, Paullinia cupana (Mart.) Ducke, Bixa orellana L., and forest in the Amazon region. The study was carried out in the São Francisco settlement, Canutama in the south of Amazonas, in a randomized block experimental design, and the treatments consisted of four areas with different crops: 1 - P. cupana; 2 - T. grandiflorum; 3 - B. orellana; 4 - Native woodland area (forest), in time subdivided plots: 7, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, 300, and 330 days after the distribution of the bags in the field, all with four repetitions. To evaluate the contribution and fractions of litter, conical collectors were used in each area, and collections were performed monthly in the period from March 2020 to February 2021. The estimate of the decomposition rate of the litter was done by quantifying the loss of mass, using litter bags, which allow for a direct analysis of the rate of decay over time. The forest and P. cupana environments presented the highest litter production, and greater deposition when compared to environments cultivated with T. grandiflorum and B. orellana. The forest and B. orellana areas showed the highest speed of decomposition, while the opposite situation occurred under T. grandiflorum and P. cupana cultivation.

Resumo A serrapilheira depositada na superfície do solo, em vários estágios de decomposição tem importância na produtividade primária que impacta nas comunidades microbianas e estocagem de carbono no solo. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar o acúmulo e decomposição dos resíduos culturais de cupuaçu, guaraná, urucum e floresta na região do Amazonas. O estudo foi realizado no assentamento São Francisco, Canutama no Sul do Amazonas, em delineamento experimental de blocos casualisados, sendo que os tratamentos constaram de quatro áreas com diferentes culturas: 1- Guaraná; 2 – Cupuaçu; 3 – Urucum; 4 – Área de mata nativa (floresta), em parcelas subdivididas no tempo: 07, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270 e 300, 330 dias após a distribuição das sacolas no campo, todas com 04 repetições. Para avaliar o aporte e frações dá serapilheira, foram utilizados coletores cônicos em cada área, sendo as coletas realizadas mensalmente no período de março de 2020 a fevereiro de 2021. A estimativa da taxa de decomposição da serrapilheira foi realizada pela quantificação da perda de massa, utilizando-se litter bags, os quais permitem analisar de forma direta a taxa de decaimento ao longo do tempo. Os ambientes de floresta e guaraná apresentaram as maiores produções de serapilheira, e maior deposição quando comparados aos ambientes cultivados com cupuaçu e urucum. As áreas de floresta e urucum apresentaram a maior velocidade de decomposição, já a situação inversa ocorreu sob o cultivo do cupuaçu e guaraná.
