Abstract In this article, we seek to understand how Museu Paulista established an area of botanic st udy and research f rom 1895 to 1927. The focus is on the constitution of the Botany Section and highlights personal and institutional network relationships for garden collection formation and maintenance. The analysis was made on institutional history and scientific practices and allowed a look at the museum’s daily work, particularly botanic practices. The study resizes the space dedicated to botany at the Museu Paulista. It shows how, over the years, various actions have sometimes promoted and sometimes suppressed the studies of flora in an institution undergoing transformations and redefining its purposes.

Resumo Neste artigo, buscamos compreender como a botânica se estabeleceu enquanto área de estudo e pesquisa no Museu Paulista entre os anos de 1895 e 1927. O foco recai na constituição da Seção de Botânica, evidenciando as redes de relações pessoais e institucionais para a formação das coleções e manutenção do horto. A análise transitou entre a história institucional e as práticas científicas, e possibilitou um olhar para o cotidiano dos trabalhos no Museu e, em especial, para as práticas de botânica. O estudo redimensiona o espaço dedicado à botânica no Museu Paulista e mostra como, ao longo dos anos, diversas ações ora impulsionaram, ora refrearam os estudos da flora, em uma instituição que também passava por transformações e redefinia suas finalidades.

Resumo O artigo explora aspectos da história da Estação Biológica do Alto da Serra, de 1918 a 1938, quando esteve sob a gestão do botânico Frederico Carlos Hoehne. A perspectiva da história das ciências balizou a análise, que considerou as especificidades da Estação Biológica e as distintas formas de pesquisa, circulação e interação. O estudo indica que o propósito de proteção e guarda da natureza articulou-se a um projeto de Nação e vinculou-se a um debate crescente sobre a conservação de áreas verdes. Complementarmente, a análise das práticas científicas demonstra a importância das visitas ao local, estrategicamente divulgadas por Hoehne para conferir credibilidade e angariar apoio à iniciativa.

Abstract This article explores aspects of the history of Alto da Serra Biological Station between 1918 and 1938, when it was under the management of the botanist Frederico Carlos Hoehne. Taking a history of science perspective, the analysis considers details of the biological station and the different forms of research, circulation, and interaction. The study indicates that the purpose of protecting and safeguarding nature was coordinated with a nation-building project and linked to a growing debate about the conservation of green areas. Additionally, the analysis of the scientific practices demonstrates the importance of visits to the site, which were strategically communicated by Hoehne to lend the initiative credibility and garner support.

RESUMO • Em consonância ao pensamento fisiocrático setecentista, a agricultura consistiu em um dos principais objetos de reflexão de Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira ao longo da Viagem Filosófica (1783-1792), com destaque especial para o texto Estado Presente da Agricultura do Pará. Neste artigo, analisaremos este manuscrito, avaliando como a observação e a experiência fundamentaram os projetos políticos e econômicos implementados nas esferas locais e metropolitanas. Analisaremos a construção de um gênero epistêmico, o “Estado Presente”, destacando as práticas científicas em toda sua complexidade, abrangendo as investigações na viagem e o processo de escrita, reflexão e síntese do texto. Destacaremos os discursos sobre a decadência da agricultura e suas proposições reformistas para a implementação de políticas agrícolas, num processo civilizador associando a ordenação e a domesticação natural aos projetos coloniais.

ABSTRACT In line with 18th-century Physiocratic thought, agriculture was one of Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira’s main objects of reflection during his Philosophical Journey (1783-1792), with special emphasis on the text “Estado Presente da Agricultura do Pará” [Present state of agriculture in the Pará], manuscript evaluating how observation and experience supported the political and economic projects implemented in the local and metropolitan spheres. We will analyze the construction of an epistemic genre, the “Present State”, highlighting scientific practices in all complexity, covering the investigations on the journey and the process of writing, reflecting and synthesizing the text. We will highlight the discourses on the decay of agriculture and its reformist proposals for the implementation of agricultural policies, in a civilizing process associating ordering and natural domestication with colonial projects.

Resumo Neste artigo refletimos sobre o desenvolvimento de uma expedição educativa pelo riacho do Ipiranga, na qual aproximamos os debates da história das ciências à Educação Ambiental, problematizando as questões socioambientais da cidade de São Paulo de forma contextualizada e crítica. Para tal, delimitamos a bacia hidrográfica, ressaltando as nascentes e as alterações no riacho do Ipiranga e os significados políticos, científicos, sanitaristas e ambientais ao longo do século XX. Associamos as questões ambientais à história de duas importantes instituições localizadas no riacho: o Jardim Botânico e o bosque do Museu Paulista. Evidenciamos as práticas, técnicas e representações científicas desenvolvidas nos locais, valorizando-as como patrimônios culturais da ciência brasileira.

Abstract In this article we reflect on the development of an educational fieldwork conducted along the Ipiranga River, in which we bring the debates concerning History of Science and Environmental Education closer together, by problematizing the social and environmental issues in the city of São Paulo in a contextualized and critical way. To that end, we established the limits for the hydrographic basin by highlighting the headwaters of the Ipiranga River and the changes it has undergone, as well as the political, sanitary and environmental meanings throughout the 20th Century. We associated the environmental issues with the history of two important institutions located along the river: The Botanical Garden and the Museu Paulista’s [São Paulo Museum] arboretum. We highlighted the practices, techniques and scientific representations that were developed on the sites, by valuing them as cultural heritage of the Brazilian science.

Resumen En este artículo reflexionamos sobre el desarrollo de un trabajo de campo educativo por el Arroyo do Ipiranga, en la que aproximamos los debates de la historia de las ciencias a la Educación Ambiental, problematizando las cuestiones socioambientales de la ciudad de São Paulo de forma contextualizada y crítica. Delimitamos la cuenca hidrográfica, resaltando las nacientes y las alteraciones en el riacho do Ipiranga y los significados políticos, sanitaristas y ambientales a lo largo del siglo XX. Asociamos las cuestiones ambientales a la historia de dos importantes instituciones ubicadas en el arroyo: el Jardín Botánico y el bosque del Museo Paulista. Evidenciamos las prácticas, técnicas y representaciones científicas desarrolladas en los locales, valorándolas como patrimonios culturales de la ciencia brasileña.

Resumo No campo do ensino de ciências, nas últimas décadas, reflexões teóricas e atividades práticas vêm sendo desenvolvidas a fim de incorporar a abordagem da História, Filosofia e Sociologia das Ciências em currículos, metodologias de ensino, materiais didáticos e programas de formação de professores. Essas discussões, mais presentes nas licenciaturas, pouco aparecem na graduação de pedagogo(a)s, responsáveis pela educação no Ensino Fundamental I. Este trabalho pretende contribuir para preencher essa lacuna. Trata-se de uma pesquisa participante realizada na disciplina optativa de História da Ciência, oferecida em 2017 na Faculdade de Educação da Universidade de São Paulo para alunos da pedagogia, aberta também para estudantes de outros cursos de licenciatura. Esta investigação tem como objetivo destacar a construção de concepções mais complexas e dinâmicas de ciência e educação que se desenvolveu durante a disciplina, a partir da escolha da leitura de determinados autores. Verificou-se o reconhecimento, por parte dos próprios educadores em formação, de contribuições dos debates e recursos didáticos desenvolvidos por eles para uma compreensão mais ampla e aprofundada da ciência e sua historicidade, das relações com a sociedade e da significação de ciência como cultura. Nesse processo, elaboraram associações com o ensino e fundamentos da educação, tanto no cenário teórico como em atividades práticas. Isso favoreceu suas formações enquanto sujeitos críticos e refletiu diretamente sobre suas práticas docentes.

Abstract In the field of science teaching, over the last decades, theoretical reflections and practical activities have been developed in order to incorporate the approach of History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Sciences in curricula, teaching methodologies, learning materials, and teacher training programs. These discussions, which are more usually found in undergraduate degrees, hardly appear in the formation of pedagogues, who are responsible for the education in Elementary School. This paper intends to contribute to fill this gap. It is a participant research realized in the optional course of History of Science, offered in 2017 by the School of Education at the University of São Paulo for pedagogy students, also open to other undergraduates. This research aims to highlight the construction of more complex and dynamic conceptions of science and education that developed throughout the classes, resulting from the choice of reading certain authors. Educators themselves acknowledged the contributions arising from the debates and didactic resources with the purpose of a broader and deeper understanding of science and its historical nature, of the relations with the society and the meaning of science as culture. In this process, they devised associations with teaching and fundamentals of education, both in the theoretical framework and in practical activities. Their training therefore benefitted students with critical judgment which directly impacted their teaching practices.

Resumo O artigo analisa as concepções de Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira sobre a urbanização de Belém, fundamentadas na história natural e na medicina social, sintetizadas na obra de Antônio Nunes Ribeiro Sanches. Primeiramente, destaca-se a influência da engenharia militar na constituição do núcleo seiscentista da cidade e na irradiação da cidade-fortaleza, ressaltando as críticas de Ferreira à centralidade geoestratégica na constituição urbana. Num segundo momento, as reformas urbanas setecentistas realizadas sob preceitos da arquitetura médica, como a construção do Hospital Real Militar e os projetos de abastecimento de água. Por fim, é pensado um conceito de cidade-civilidade, expresso nas reformas urbanas com a construção de símbolos de poder estatal e de áreas de lazer e sociabilidade, incluindo as observações sobre as moradias.

Abstract This paper discusses Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira's conceptions about the urbanization of Belém, rooted in natural history and social medicine, as expressed in the work of Antônio Nunes Ribeiro Sanches. The influence of military engineering on its constitution in the 1600s and the spread of this fortress town are investigated, emphasizing Ferreira's criticisms of the geostrategic centrality in the development of the city. The urban reforms of the 1700s under the precepts of medical architecture are then presented, such as the building of the Royal Military Hospital and the water supply system. The concept of the civil city is presented, as expressed in the urban redevelopments, with the building of symbols of state power, areas for leisure and conviviality, and housing.

Resumo Problematizamos uma série de gêneros textuais escritos durante o Iluminismo em Portugal, marcadamente entre 1720 e 1800, compreendendo-os na condição de manuais de saber, e apontamos alguns sentidos das imagens nesses escritos de ampla circulação no mundo luso-brasileiro.

Abstract We investigate a series of writing genres from the Enlightenment in Portugal, especially between 1720 and 1800, comprehending them as manuals of knowledge, and we highlight some of the meanings of the images in these writings that were widely circulated in the Portuguese-speaking world.

Resumo O presente trabalho sobre as Viagens filosóficas portuguesas ao Brasil no século XVIII tem o objetivo de expandir as temáticas e abordagens da história das ciências no Brasil, abrindo espaço para o debate sobre como o trabalho com as práticas, técnicas e representações científicas possibilita desenvolver metodologias de ensino que abordem temas brasileiros em seu contexto. A partir do material, retirado de um banco de dados biobibliográficos sobre os viajantes, traçamos redes de relações entre políticos, desenhistas, engenheiros, cartógrafos, gravadores, naturalistas e a população local. Para a divulgação dos dados, o material nos desafiou a pensar em propostas de escrita biográfica dos viajantes no ambiente virtual. O espaço permite que o trabalho afiance duas escalas de importância, ou seja, realce o papel particular dos viajantes, demonstrando singularidades, e garanta a análise dos contextos sociais pelas relações interpessoais na perspectiva espaço-temporal. No entremeio dos formatos biográficos e refletindo sobre o caráter híbrido do gênero, definimos que a formulação de micronarrativas asseguraria a escrita biográfica construída sobre os viajantes. A escrita de textos curtos será conduzida especialmente pela biografia modal, apontando as redes de relações sociais do sujeito, e pelos biografemas, caracterizados pela produção de uma impressão biográfica momentânea. Por um processo não-linear da História, a escrita biográfica e a criação de hiperlinks permitem que o caráter complexo das relações do período se reflitam nas micronarrativas formuladas.

Abstract This study about the Philosophical Portuguese Journeys to Brazil aims at expanding the theme of and the approach to the History of Science in Brazil, promoting the debate about how the work on scientific practices, techniques and representations allows the development of teaching methodologies that encompass Brazilian themes in their context. From the gathered sources, obtained from a bibliographical database of travelers, we were able to draw relationship webs linking politicians, drawers, engineers, cartographers, engravers, naturalists and the local population. In order to disclose the data, this gathered material challenged us to think about proposals of biographical writings of travelers within the virtual environment. Such framework allows our work to ensure two scales of importance, i.e., to emphasize the particular role of travelers, demonstrating singularities, and to guarantee the analysis of social contexts via interpersonal relations from a space-time perspective. Within such biographies and elaborating on the hybrid character of the genre, we defined that the formulation of micro-narratives would grant the biographical writing constructed around the travelers. The writing of short texts will basically follow the modal biography, pointing to the network of social relations of the subject, and also by the biographemes, characterized by the production of a momentary biographical impression. Through a non-linear historical process, the biographical writings and the creation of hyperlinks allow the complex nature of the relationships of that period to be reflected in the micro-narratives formulated.

A água como tema no contexto educacional é abordada a partir de diversas perspectivas. Diante das discussões em relação à crise socioambiental atual, acreditamos que a educação para a água deva ser realizada a partir da abordagem das dimensões espacial e temporal, considerando nesta última o tempo geológico e a história humana, sem a qual não é possível enfrentar a fragmentação do conhecimento que predomina no ambiente escolar. A abordagem do local, tendo como unidade de estudo a bacia hidrográfica, auxiliada pelos conteúdos das geociências e por metodologias interdisciplinares, proporciona uma visão integrada e contextualizada do tema para a construção do conhecimento.

The water as subject in the education context should be boarded from several perspectives. With a view to the current discussions regarding the socio-environmental crisis, we believe that the education for the water should be carried out from two dimensions: spatial and temporal, the last one considering geological time and human history and without these perspectives are not possible to face the fragmentation of the knowledge that predominates in scholar environment. For a construction of a new knowledge, the hydrographic basin as a unity of study provides an integrated vision, aided by Geosciences and interdisciplinary methodologies.

O objetivo deste artigo é mostrar os aspectos mineralógicos das "Viagens Filosóficas" realizadas no Império português na transição do século XVIII para o XIX, com ênfase no Brasil. Tais expedições científicas e seus resultados inserem Portugal e suas possessões no contexto científico do período. Acreditamos que as "Viagens Filosóficas" estão entre os elementos mais relevantes para entender o processo de institucionalização das ciências naturais no Brasil, particularmente - no caso deste artigo - as ciências mineralógicas.

The late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century scientific expeditions undertaken by the Crown earned Portugal and its possessions a place on the period's scientific stage. These Philosophical Voyages provide us with invaluable elements for understanding the process by which the natural sciences were institutionalized in Brazil, especially - in the case of this article - the mineralogical sciences.

Com o objetivo de avaliar a confecção e a utilização de imagens na Viagem Philosophica de Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira, avaliaremos os desenhos de peixes oceânicos produzidos por J. J. Freire e J. J. Codina durante a travessia entre Lisboa e Belém. Para apreendermos as técnicas e os métodos de desenhar comuns em todas as representações, compreendemos que devemos confrontar os desenhos resultantes das Viagens Philosophicas ao Pará e às colônias portuguesas na África, pois seus 'desenhadores' (ou riscadores, como eram denominados os desenhistas na época) foram formados em conjunto e designados para a mesma função, do risco de produtos de história natural. Através dos documentos textuais resultantes das Viagens Philosophicas ao Pará e para Angola, como relações de remessas de coleções, correspondências de viagens e inventários de museus, localizamos e comparamos os desenhos de peixes oceânicos confeccionados pelos desenhadores das duas expedições.

With the aim of evaluating the creation and use of images in Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira's Viagem Philosophica, the article examines the drawings of ocean fish made by J. J. Freire and J. J. Codina during their crossing from Lisbon to Belém, Pará. To help understand the techniques and methods common to these images, drawings produced during the "Philosophical Travels" to Pará were compared with those from voyages to Portugal's African colonies, since the draftsmen had been trained together and assigned the same task: sketching the products of natural history. Through reference to written documents from the journeys to Pará and to Angola - including manifests of collections, travel correspondence, and museum inventories - sketches of ocean fish made by draftsmen from both expeditions were located and compared.
