Resumo Com base nos estudos conduzidos de acordo com o paradigma Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM), em quais palavras de uma lista tendem a evocar outros itens relacionados, utilizado em pesquisas de falsas memórias, neste estudo elaborou-se 15 listas de palavras semanticamente relacionadas para o português. Para a elaboração das listas, foram considerados critérios como frequência de palavras no corpus de português brasileiro e extensão de palavras. A pré-seleção guiada por características linguísticas visava controlar possíveis vieses por parte dos voluntários. Testes de associação semântica e concretude de palavras foram realizados para apurar a conveniência dos itens selecionados, e um teste de recordação livre foi conduzido para avaliar características de evocação. Sugerimos a utilização das listas de palavras em pesquisas que avaliem falsas memórias.

Abstract Based on studies conducted in accordance with the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm, in which words of a list tend to evoke other related items, used in false memory research, this study produced 15 lists of semantically related words for Brazilian Portuguese. For the preparation of the lists, certain criteria were considered, such as word length and frequency of words in a Brazilian Portuguese corpus. Pre-selection guided by linguistic characteristics aimed to control possible biases among volunteers. Semantic association and concreteness tests were carried out to determine the suitability of the selected items, and a free recall test was performed to evaluate evocation characteristics. We suggest using word lists in researches that evaluate false memories.

RESUMO Objetivo Buscar evidências de validade e fidedignidade da Bateria Montreal de Avaliação da Comunicação Breve (MAC B) para adultos com lesão do hemisfério direito. Método Trezentos e vinte e quatro adultos saudáveis e 26 adultos com lesão cerebral direita, com idades de 19 a 75 anos, com dois ou mais anos de escolaridade, foram avaliados com a Bateria MAC B. Essa bateria contém nove tarefas que visam avaliar habilidades comunicativas, como: discurso prosódia; processo léxico-semântico e pragmática. Duas fontes de evidências de fidedignidade foram utilizadas, ou seja, a consistência interna (alfa de Cronbach) e a concordância entre avaliadores. A validade foi avaliada comparando as tarefas da Bateria MAC na versão expandida e da MAC B. Resultados Em relação à fidedignidade, a consistência interna foi satisfatória e as taxas de concordância entre os avaliadores foram consideradas excelentes, assim como as correlações entre as tarefas da Bateria MAC e Bateria MAC B. Conclusão A Bateria MAC B apresentou evidências de fidedignidade e validade satisfatórias, podendo ser usada como medida para resultado de programas de intervenção, e também auxiliar o fonoaudiólogo a planejar o programa de reabilitação.

ABSTRACT Purpose Search for reliability and validity evidence for the Montreal Communication Evaluation Brief Battery (MEC B) for adults with right brain damage. Methods Three hundred twenty-four healthy adults and 26 adults with right brain damage, aged 19-75 years, with two or more years of education were evaluated with MEC B. The MEC B Battery contains nine tasks that aim to evaluate communicative abilities as discourse, prosody, lexical-semantic and pragmatic process. Two sources of reliability evidence were used: internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and interrater reliability. Construct validity was evaluated comparing the Montreal Communication Evaluation Battery (MEC), expanded version and MEC B tasks. Results Internal consistence was satisfactory and the interrater reliability was considered excellent, as were correlations between MEC Battery and MEC B Battery tasks. Conclusion The MEC B Battery showed satisfactory reliability and validity evidences. It can be used as outcome measure of intervention programs and assist speech therapists to plan rehabilitation programs.

Resumo Neste estudo, investigaram-se efeitos de idade e escolaridade e suas interações no desempenho de adultos no Instrumento de Avaliação Neuropsicológica Breve NEUPSILIN, que avalia orientação têmporo-espacial, atenção, percepção, memória, linguagem, calculias, praxias e funções executivas. Participaram 627 adultos saudáveis (19 a 90 anos), divididos em três grupos, conforme escolaridade (1 a 4, 5 a 8 e 9 anos ou mais de estudo) e em quatro grupos por idade (19 a 39, 40 a 59, 60 a 75 e 76 a 90 anos). Encontraram-se efeitos de idade e escolaridade em atenção, percepção, memória (de trabalho, verbal episódica, semântica, visual e prospectiva), linguagem oral e escrita, praxias e funções executivas. Interações entre idade e escolaridade foram encontradas em atenção, memória verbal, linguagem oral e escrita. Os resultados destacam que o envelhecimento e a escolaridade impactam de forma heterogênea nas funções cognitivas, assim como os testes neuropsicológicos brasileiros devem sempre considerar a influência dessas variáveis para produzir seus dados normativos.

Abstract This study investigated the effects of age and schooling and their interactions on the performance of adults in the NEUPSILIN Brief Neuropsychological Assessment Instrument, which evaluates time and space orientation, attention, perception, memory, language, calculation, motor functions, and executive functions. The sample was composed of 627 healthy adults (19 to 90 years), who were divided into three groups according to education range (1 to 4, 5 to 8 and 9 or more years of study) and into four groups by age range (19-39, 40-59, 60-75 and 76-90 years). We identified age and schooling effects in attention, perception, memory (working, verbal episodic, semantic, visual and prospective memory), oral and written language, motor functions, and executive functions. Interactions between age and schooling were observed in attention, verbal memory, and oral and written language tasks. The results highlighted that aging and schooling impact cognitive functions heterogeneously, and that Brazilian neuropsychological tests should always consider the influence of these variables to produce their normative data.

Resumen En este estudio se investigaron los efectos de edad y escolaridad, y las interacciones en el desempeño de adultos en el Instrumento de Evaluación Neuropsicológica Breve NEUPSILIN que evalúa la orientación espacio-temporal, atención, percepción, memoria, lenguaje, cálculos, prácticas y funciones ejecutivas. Participaron 627 adultos que gozaban de buena salud (19-90 años), divididos en tres grupos según el nivel educativo (1 a 4, 5 a 8 y 9 o más años de estudio) y cuatro grupos por edad (19 a 39, 40 a 59, 60 a 75 y 76 a 90 años). Se encontraron efectos de la edad y de educación en atención, percepción, memoria (de trabajo, episódica, semántica, visual y futura) lenguaje, oral y escrita, prácticas y funciones ejecutivas. Interacciones entre edad y escolaridad fueron encontradas en atención, memoria verbal, lenguaje oral y escrita. Los resultados destacan que el envejecimiento y la escolaridad impactan de forma heterogénea en las funciones cognitivas, y que los tests neuropsicológicos brasileños deben considerar siempre la influencia de estas variables para producir datos normativos.

CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO: Há uma preocupação crescente com o entendimento de como as variáveis sociodemográficas podem interferir no funcionamento cognitivo, especialmente na linguagem. Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar a relação entre o desempenho na Bateria Montreal-Toulouse de Avaliação da Linguagem, em sua versão brasileira (MTL-BR), e a escolaridade, a idade e a frequência de hábitos de leitura e escrita (FHLE).TIPO DE ESTUDO E LOCAL: Estudo transversal conduzido em ambientes universitários e de trabalho do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil.MÉTODOS: A Bateria MTL-BR foi administrada em um grupo de 233 adultos saudáveis, de 19 a 75 anos de idade (M = 45,04, desvio padrão, DP = 15,47), com no mínimo cinco anos de estudo formal (M = 11,47, DP = 4,77).RESULTADOS: O modelo de regressão linear múltipla (stepwise) mostrou que, para a maioria das tarefas, os anos de escolaridade, de idade e FHLE são melhores preditores de desempenho quando analisados em conjunto do que separadamente. Quando analisada isoladamente, a escolaridade foi o melhor preditor para o desempenho nas tarefas linguísticas, principalmente nas tarefas que envolvem habilidades de leitura e escrita.CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados mostraram que os anos de escolaridade, idade e FHLE parecem influenciar o desempenho na MTL-BR, principalmente a escolaridade. Esses dados são relevantes para a realização de diagnóstico mais preciso de pacientes que sofreram lesão cerebral a fim de evitar falsos positivos.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: There is growing concern about understanding how sociodemographic variables may interfere with cognitive functioning, especially with regard to language. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between performance in the Brazilian version of the Montreal-Toulouse language assessment battery (MTL-BR) and education, age and frequency of reading and writing habits (FRWH).DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted in university and work environments in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.METHOD: The MTL-BR was administered to a group of 233 healthy adults, aged 19 to 75 years (mean = 45.04, standard deviation, SD = 15.47), with at least five years of formal education (mean = 11.47, SD = 4.77).RESULTS: A stepwise multiple linear regression model showed that, for most tasks, the number of years of education, age and FRWH were better predictors of performance when analyzed together rather than separately. In separate analysis, education was the best predictor of performance in language tasks, especially those involving reading and writing abilities.CONCLUSION: The results suggested that the number of years of education, age and FRWH seem to influence performance in the MTL-BR, especially education. These data are important for making diagnoses of greater precision among patients suffering from brain injuries, with the aim of avoiding false positives.

O objetivo deste artigo é descrever a evolução das avaliações de linguagem em pacientes com distúrbios neurológicos adquiridos durante um período de aproximadamente 45 anos, dos anos 1970 até os dias atuais, quando a interdisciplinaridade iniciou-se no Brasil na Neuropsicologia. Os relatos dos primeiros 20 anos foram baseados em memórias de professores de universidades que possuiam o curso de Fonoaudiologia e ministravam disciplinas de afasia. Após, procuramos mostrar as contribuições da Linguística, da Psicologia Cognitiva para a avaliação da linguagem, assim como dos critérios psicolinguísticos e psicométricos. Por fim, apresentamos o panorama atual das adaptações e criações de instrumentos validados e estandardizados a partir de busca nas bases Pubmed, Scopus e Lilacs. Nossos comentários finais salientam a diversidade dos métodos de avaliação e a tendência recente da avaliação da linguagem estar relacionada às novas tecnologias de imagem cerebral e a análises computacionais.

The objective of this paper was to describe the evolution of language assessments in patients with acquired neurological diseases over a period of around 45 years from 1970, when interdisciplinarity in Neuropsychology first began in Brazil, to the present day. The first twenty years of data was based on memories of Speech Pathology University Professors who were in charge of teaching aphasia. We then show the contributions of Linguistics, Cognitive Psychology, as well as Psycholinguistic and Psychometric criteria, to language evaluation. Finally, the current panorama of adaptations and creations of validated and standardized instruments is given, based on a search of the databases Pubmed, Scopus and Lilacs. Our closing remarks highlight the diversity in evaluation approaches and the recent tendency of language evaluations linked to new technologies such as brain imaging and computational analysis.

Processamento semântico verbal é uma parte relevante da avaliação linguístico-cognitiva e o KDT tem sido amplamente utilizado para tal finalidade, evidenciando diferenças clínicas entre pacientes com danos cerebrais. Para aumentar sua utilização, valores de referência são necessários, especialmente para populações com origens socioeconômicas e níveis de escolaridade heterogêneos.OBJETIVO:Analisar efeitos da escolaridade e idade no KDT em indivíduos cognitivamente intactosMÉTODOS:O KDT foi aplicado em 74 indivíduos saudáveis. Fatores sociodemográficos foram investigados por correlação e análises entre grupos. Valores de referência foram fornecidos por idade e escolaridade.RESULTADOS:O desempenho do KDT correlaciona-se significativamente à escolaridade (r=0.757, p<0.01), à idade (r=-0.496, p<0.01) e ao nível socioeconômico (r=0.418, p<0.01 ), variáveis que se mostraram intercorrelacionadas. Correlações com a escolaridade e idade permaneceram significativas quando controladas a idade e nível socioeconômico (r=0.530, p<0.01) e a escolaridade (r=- 0.305,<0.01), respectivamente. Com controle do parâmetro da escolaridade, não houve correlação significativa entre o nível socioeconômico e o KDT (p=0.164). As análises entre grupos não revelaram os efeitos da idade. Encontraram-se diferenças significativas no desempenho de acordo com escolaridade. Escores abaixo do percentil 25 (39/52 - indivíduos com até 8 anos de escolaridade e 47/52- indivíduos com 9 ou mais anos de escolaridade) são sugestivos de dificuldades no processamento semântico de ações, que devem ser melhor investigadas.Conclusão:O desempenho do KDT foi influenciado por idade e escolaridade, o que reflete a necessidade de se considerar estes fatores como covariantes e, na prática clínica, usar diferentes pontos de corte, considerando essas características demográficas.

Action semantics is a relevant part of cognitive-linguistic assessment and the "Kissing and Dancing Test" (KDT) has been used extensively for this purpose, evidencing clinical distinctions among brain-damaged patients. To enhance its use, reference values are necessary, especially for populations with heterogeneous educational levels and socioeconomic backgrounds.OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of schooling and age on the KDT in cognitively unimpaired individualMETHODS: The KDT was applied to seventy-four healthy subjects. Sociodemographic factors were investigated through correlational and between-group analyses. Reference values according to age and schooling were provided.RESULTSKDT performance correlated significantly with schooling (r=0.757, p<0.01), age (r=-0.496, p<0.01) and socioeconomic status (r=0.418 p<0.01) but these variables were intercorrelated. Correlation with schooling and age remained signifi when controlling for age and socioeconomic status (r=0.530, p<0.01), and for schooling (-0.305,<0.01), respectively. When controlling for schooling, correlation between socioeconomic status and KDT was not significant (p=0.164). Between-group analyses revealed no age effects. Significant differences were found in performance according to educational level. Scores below 39/52 and below 47/52 (percentile 25) for individuals with 8 or less years of schooling and for individuals with 9 or more years of schooling, respectively, seem suggestive of an impairment in Action Semantics Processing and shall be further investigatedCONCLUSION KDT performance was influenced both by age and schooling, indicating the need to consider these demographic features as covariates when analyzing performance on the test and to adjust cut-off scores according to these demographic characteristics in clinical practice.

Objetivo investigar as características discursivas de pessoas com Doença de Alzheimer (DA) nos estágios moderado e moderado-grave por meio de uma tarefa com apoio em figuras; examinar possíveis falhas na expressão do conhecimento e a relação entre o discurso e a cognição. Métodos trata-se de um estudo com delineamento transversal, quantitativo, utilizando-se da análise de comparação de grupos. A amostra do grupo clínico foi constituída por dezoito participantes com DA (oito sujeitos com declínio cognitivo moderado (GDS 4), e dez com declínio cognitivo moderado-grave (GDS 5); o grupo controle foi composto de dezesseis sujeitos sem distúrbios neurológicos ou psiquiátricos. Todos sujeitos foram pareados quanto ao gênero, língua materna, idade e escolaridade e todos submetidos a avaliações de habilidades cognitivas. A tarefa discursiva consistiu na narrativa baseada em uma sequência de figuras do conto “Chapeuzinho Vermelho”. Resultados os sujeitos com DA apresentaram escores de coerência global mais baixos, bem como mais falhas na expressão de conhecimento do que sujeitos sem DA e suas características discursivas correlacionaram-se com suas habilidades cognitivas. Os grupos GDS 4 e GDS 5 diferiram com relação à coerência local. Conclusão o discurso dos participantes com DA caracteriza-se por falhas de coerência e informatividade que apresentam relações estreitas com seus déficits cognitivos.

Purpose to investigate discourse in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) using a picture narrative task; to examine possible difficulties in the expression of knowledge and the relationship between discourse and cognition. Methods the design of the study was transversal, using quantitative comparison of groups. The clinical sample consisted of eighteen subjects with AD, eight of them with moderate cognitive decline (GDS 4) and ten with moderate-severe cognitive decline (GDS 5); the control group consisted of sixteen subjects without neurological or psychiatric disorders. All were matched for gender, native language, age and education and subjects underwent cognitive assessments. The discourse task consisted of a picture narrative of the tale “Little Red Riding Hood.” Results participants with AD had lower overall coherence scores and more difficulties in the expression of knowledge than subjects without AD. Discourse deficits correlated with performance on cognitive measures. The GDS 4 and GDS 5 groups differed in local coherence scores. Conclusion discourse of subjects with AD was characterized by failure in coherence and informativeness, which related strongly with their cognitive deficits.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar se estudos sobre dificuldades léxico-semânticas de pacientes com doença de Parkinson (DP) confirmam o modelo da Cognição Incorporada. Este propõe que pacientes com DP terão mais dificuldade no processamento semântico de conceitos de ações (verbos de ação) do que de objetos estáticos. Também verificamos se estes estudos seguem os debates atuais da Neurociência, e especialmente o debate entre o Modelo Lexical e a Cognição Incorporada. Estudos recentes sobre as bases neurais da semântica de verbos coletados através de neuroimagem foram descritos e após, foram apresentados aqueles que focalizaram o processamento neural de verbos em pacientes com DP. Concluímos que ainda existem poucos estudos que verificaram adequadamente a teoria da Cognição Incorporada no contexto da DP, especialmente utilizando neuroimagem. Estas limitações mostram que ainda existe muito para ser investigado sobre dificuldades semânticas de verbos nestes pacientes, principalmente controlando variáveis psicolinguísticas e características semânticas inerentes dos verbos.

ABSTRACT The objective of the current review was to verify whether studies investigating lexical-semantic difficulties in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) support the Embodied Cognition model. Under this framework, it is predicted that patients with PD will have more difficulties in the semantic processing of action concepts (action verbs) than of motionless objects. We also verified how and whether these studies are following current debates of Neuroscience, particularly the debate between the Lexical and the Embodied Cognition models. Recent neuroimaging studies on the neural basis of the semantics of verbs were presented, as well as others that focused on the neural processing of verbs in PD. We concluded that few studies suitably verified the Embodied Cognition theory in the context of PD, especially using neuroimaging techniques. These limitations show there is much to investigate on the semantic difficulties with action verbs in these patients, where it is particularly important to control for psycholinguistic variables and the inherent semantic characteristics of verbs in future studies.

OBJETIVO: Esse estudo teve como objetivo apresentar normas de desempenho e discrepância em três tarefas de fluência verbal de um minuto e investigar os efeitos de idade e escolaridade. Além disso, investigamos as diferenças entre os intervalos de tempo e se essas diferenças variaram em função da idade e escolaridade. MÉTODO: Participaram 300 adultos divididos em três grupos de idade (19-39; 40-59; 60-75) e anos de escolaridade (2 a 7; 8 ou mais), avaliados com tarefas de fluência verbal livre, fonêmica ou semântica. O desempenho entre grupos foi comparado por uma two-way ANOVA com post-hoc Bonferroni, com o escore da escala de depressão como co-variável. A variável de comparação intragrupos foi o tempo da fluência verbal (ANOVA medidas repetidas). RESULTADOS E CONCUSÕES: Os resultados indicaram efeitos principais de idade e escolaridade nas tarefas ortográfica e livre, e uma interação entre essas variáveis na tarefa semântica (intervalos e total), e na discrepância entre as tarefas semântica e ortográfica. A análise de medidas repetidas demonstrou efeitos principais de idade na tarefa semântica e de educação nas tarefas semântica e ortográfica. Tais achados são relevantes para futuras interpretações de dados clínicos, evitando assim falsos positivos ou negativos.

OBJECTIVE: To present performance norms and discrepancy score of three one-minute verbal fluency tasks (VFTs); to investigate age and education effects; to analyze the differences between time intervals; and to investigate whether these differences varied according to age and education. METHOD: Three hundred adults divided into three age groups (19-39; 40-59; 60-75) and two groups of educational level (2 to 7 years; 8 years or more) performed unconstrained, semantic, and phonemic VFTs. We compared the performance of the groups using two-way ANOVA with post-hoc Bonferroni test. The depression scale score was covariate. The time interval of verbal fluency was the variable used for subjects' comparison (repeated measures ANOVA). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that there are age and education effects on phonemic and unconstrained VFTs. We also found an interaction between those variables in the semantic VFT (time intervals and total time) and in the differences between semantic and phonemic tasks. The repeated measures analysis revealed age effects on semantic VFTs and education effects on the phonemic and semantic VFTs. Such findings are relevant for clinical neuropsychology, contributing to avoid false-positive or false-negative interpretation.

As tarefas de fluência verbal são amplamente empregadas na clínica neuropsicológica para avaliar os componentes de funções executivas e processamento léxico-semântico (linguagem e memória semântica). O desempenho nessas tarefas pode ser influenciado por diferentes variáveis, como idade, escolaridade e diferentes patologias. Este estudo investigou se a idade, escolaridade, frequência dos hábitos de leitura e escrita, o desempenho em tarefas de julgamento semântico e sintomas de depressão predizem os desempenhos em tarefas de fluência verbal de critério livre, fonêmico-ortográfico e semântico. Participaram desse estudo 260 adultos saudáveis entre 19 e 75 anos. Foi utilizada a correlação de Pearson e da análise de regressão múltipla. As variáveis analisadas foram associadas em diferentes modelos combinatórios e apresentaram distintos níveis de explicação de acordo com o tipo de fluência verbal. A escolaridade foi a variáveis que melhor contribuiu para a explicação do desempenho nas tarefas de fluência verbal, seguida pela idade, principalmente na tarefa fonêmico-ortográfica. O desempenho nas tarefas de julgamento semântico predisse a performance da fluência verbal isoladamente ou em combinação com as demais variáveis. Esses resultados corroboram a importância da escolaridade na cognição, sustentando a hipótese da reserva cognitiva e confirmam a implicação do processamento léxico-semântico na fluência verbal.

Verbal fluency tasks are widely used in (clinical) neuropsychology to evaluate components of executive functioning and lexical-semantic processing (linguistic and semantic memory). Performance in those tasks may be affected by several variables, such as age, education and diseases. This study investigated whether aging, education, reading and writing frequency, performance in semantic judgment tasks and depression symptoms predict the performance in unconstrained, phonemic and semantic fluency tasks. This study sample comprised 260 healthy adults aged 19 to 75 years old. The Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression models were used for data analysis. The variables under analysis were associated in different ways and had different levels of contribution according to the type of verbal fluency task. Education had the greatest effect on verbal fluency tasks. There was a greater effect of age on semantic fluency than on phonemic tasks. The semantic judgment tasks predicted the verbal fluency performance alone or in combination with other variables. These findings corroborate the importance of education in cognition supporting the hypothesis of a cognitive reserve and confirming the contribution of lexical-semantic processing to verbal fluency.

La investigación examinó la fiabilidad del Instrumento de Evaluación Neuropsicológica Breve Neupsilin, desarrollado en Brasil. Participaron 102 hombres y mujeres brasileños, de 18 a 40 años de edad. Se evaluó la fiabilidad del test-retest del Neupsilin y de la corrección, por distintos evaluadores, de la prueba para evaluación de apraxia constructiva. Se analizaron los datos con: el test de correlación de Spearman, el coeficiente de correlación intraclase y el coeficiente alpha de Cronbach. Las habilidades de lenguaje, memoria, praxias y funciones ejecutivas presentaron las más altas correlaciones para los resultados del test-retest. Se encontró una concordancia de moderada a alta entre los correctores de la tarea de praxia constructiva. Los resultados indicaron fiabilidad temporal para las tareas evaluadas por el Neupsilin y fiabilidad del corrector para la tarea praxia constructiva. Se presentan sugerencias para perfeccionar las tareas y mejorar la fiabilidad y la validez de la prueba.

This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of Neupsilin Brief Neuropsychological Assessment Instrument, a brief battery developed in Brazil. Hundred two Brazilian man and women participated, from 18 to 40 years of age. It was evaluated the test-retest reliability of the Neupsilin tasks and the reliability of the correction of the constructional praxis task by different evaluators. The data were analyzed by Spearman's correlation, intraclass correlation and Cronbach's alpha. Language, memory, praxis and executive functions presented the highest correlations in the test-retest analyses. The agreement in the correction of the constructional praxis task was moderate to high. The results indicate temporal reliability of Neupsilin tasks and inter-rater agreement in the correction of the constructional praxis task. Suggestions to improve the tasks, the validity and reliability of Neupsilin were presented.

Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar a fidedignidade do Instrumento de Avaliação Neuropsicológica Breve Neupsilin, desenvolvido no Brasil. Participaram 102 homens e mulheres brasileiros de 18 a 40 anos. Examinou-se a fidedignidade do teste-reteste das tarefas do Neupsilin e a fidedignidade da correção, por diferentes avaliadores, das tarefas de praxia construtiva. Os dados foram analisados utilizando correlação de Spearman, coeficiente de correlação intraclasse e coeficiente alfa de Cronbach. As habilidades de linguagem, memória, praxia e funções executivas apresentaram as maiores correlações nas análises de teste e reteste. Foi encontrada uma concordância de moderada a alta entre os corretores da tarefa praxia construtiva. Os resultados indicaram a fidedignidade temporal para as tarefas do Neupsilin e a concordância entre avaliadores das tarefas de praxia construtiva. Sugestões para melhorar as tarefas, a validade e a fidedignidade do Neupsilin foram apresentadas.

RESUMO Este estudo ofereceu uma revisão sistemática de intervenções não-farmacológicas aplicadas a pacientes com Afasia Progressiva Primária (APP) e suas variantes: Semântica (APPS), Não-fluente (APPNF) e Logopênica (APPL) com o objetivo de estabelecer recomendações baseadas em evidências para a prática clínica de reabilitação cognitiva para estes pacientes. Métodos: Conduziu-se busca por literatura, sem restrição de período, no PubMed e LILACS com as palavras-chave PPA (e variantes) AND rehabilitation OR training OR intervention OR therapy OR treatment OR effectiveness. Para desenvolver recomendações baseadas em evidências um comitê de pesquisadores identificou as questões relevantes para investigação e determinou o nível de evidência para cada estudo de acordo com critérios publicados (Cicerone et al., 2000). A evidência total para os tratamentos foi sumarizada e recomendações redigidas. Resultados: Foram encontrados artigos publicados de 1995 a 2013: 21 para APPS, 8 para APPNF, 3 para APPL e 8 para APP sem especificações. Trinta e cinco estudos foram classificados como Classe III, consistindo de resultados obtidos com um ou mais indivíduos e utilizando metodologia apropriada para estudo de casos. O nível de evidência de três intervenções funcionais não pôde ser estabelecido. Um estudo foi classificado como Classe II e consistiu de pesquisa caso-controle não-randomizada. Conclusão: Resultados positivos foram reportados em todos os trabalhos analisados mas, para serem recomendados, os tratamentos requerem investigação em relação a sua eficácia. Resultados da presente revisão permitiram recomendação de algumas intervenções como Opções Práticas. Ademais, apresentamos sugestões para futuros estudos de intervenção em APP.

ABSTRACT This study provided a systematic review on nonpharmacological interventions applied to patients diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) and its variants: Semantic (SPPA), Nonfluent (NFPPA) and Logopenic (LPPA) to establish evidence-based recommendations for the clinical practice of cognitive rehabilitation for these patients. Methods: A PubMed and LILACS literature search with no time restriction was conducted with the keywords PPA (and its variants) AND rehabilitation OR training OR intervention OR therapy OR treatment OR effectiveness. To develop its evidence-based recommendations, a research committee identified questions to be addressed and determined the level of evidence for each study according to published criteria (Cicerone et al., 2000). Overall evidence for treatments was summarized and recommendations were derived. Results: Our search retrieved articles published from 1995 to 2013: 21 for SPPA, 8 for NFPPA, 3 for LPPA and 8 for PPA with no specification. Thirty-five studies were rated as Class III, consisting of studies with results obtained from one or more single-cases and that used appropriate single-subject methods with adequate quantification and analysis of results. The level of evidence of three functional interventions could not be established. One study was rated as Class II and consisted of a nonrandomized case-control investigation. Conclusion: Positive results were reported in all reviewed studies. However, in order to be recommended, some investigation regarding the intervention efficacy was required. Results of the present review allows for recommendation of some nonpharmacological interventions for cognitive deficits following PPA as Practice Options. Suggestions for further studies on PPA interventions and future research are discussed.

Este estudo investigou a relação entre medidas do WCST e de uma bateria breve de funções cognitivas (NEUPSILIN), com o objetivo de fornecer uma melhor compreensão sobre a associação entre processos executivos e demais funções. Participaram 39 pessoas entre 14 e 61 anos de idade e média de escolaridade de 12,38 (DP=3,65) anos de estudo. A hipótese de que correlações moderadas a fortes se dariam entre as medidas de funções executivas, memória de trabalho, atenção e memória prospectiva do NEUPSILIN e os escores no WCST foi parcialmente corroborada, porque a intensidade das correlações foi inferior ao previsto. Também foram encontradas correlações entre escores do WCST e tarefas que mensuram componentes de memória episódico-semântica, linguagem oral (processamento inferências) e escrita (leitura).

This study investigated the relationship between measures of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and a brief battery of cognitive functions (NEUPSILIN) with the goal of providing a better understanding of the association between executive processes and other functions. The sample included 39 people, from 14 to 61 years old, with an average education of 12.38 (SD = 3.65) years of study. The hypothesis that correlations would be moderate to strong between the measures of executive function, working memory, attention and prospective memory from NEUPSILIN and WCST scores was partially corroborated because the intensity of the correlations was below than the expected. Other correlations were also found between the WCST scores and tasks that assess semantic-episodic memory, oral language (inference processing) and writing (reading) components.

OBJETIVO: Analisar o reconhecimento das figuras do Teste MT Beta-86 modificado, descrever e discutir aspectos metodológicos da adaptação desse instrumento de avaliação da linguagem. MÉTODOS: O estudo foi dividido em duas partes. Na primeira, participaram 61 indivíduos com escolaridade superior a 9 anos. Solicitou-se nomeação de 266 estímulos visuais e verificou-se a concordância da nomeação das figuras entre os participantes. Para a concordância de respostas, utilizou-se o teste de Cochran, com nível de significância de 5%. Em seguida, alguns estímulos visuais foram redesenhados, e as imagens foram substituídas. As imagens passaram pela segunda parte do estudo, da qual participaram 110 indivíduos divididos em 4 faixas de escolaridade (A: 1 a 4 anos; B: 5 a 8 anos; C: 9 a 11 anos e D: acima de 12 anos), de ambos os sexos e idades entre 18 e 75 anos. Foram considerados adequados para serem utilizados na avaliação de linguagem os estímulos com índice de concordância de, no mínimo, 70%. RESULTADOS: Na parte A do estudo, a partir do índice de concordância de nomeação das figuras, foram escolhidas as consideradas apropriadas para fazer parte do teste em sua versão em adaptação. A segunda parte demonstrou que todas as figuras selecionadas apresentaram concordância de resposta acima de 70%. CONCLUSÃO: Identificaram-se quais figuras do Teste MT Beta-86 modificado poderão continuar presentes na próxima versão do instrumento e, por meio da análise do baixo reconhecimento populacional, verificaram-se quais pranchas deverão ser substituídas e quais poderão compor a nova versão do teste.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the recognition of figures from the modified MT Beta-86 test for subsequent refinement and adaptation of this language assessment instrument. METHODS: This study was organized into two parts. The first part of the study involved 61 subjects with educational level higher than nine years. Naming of 266 visual stimuli was elicited and concordance among participants on figure naming was also determined. Concordance of responses was assessed using Cochrane's test at a 5% level of significance. Some visual stimuli were subsequently re-designed and images were replaced. The second part of this study involved the re-testing of the new images among 110 individuals ranging in age from 18 to 75 years of both genders, stratified into four educational bands (A: 1 - 4 years; B: 5 - 8 years; C: 9 - 11 years; and D: more than 12 years). Stimuli with concordance level of 70% or higher were considered adequate. RESULTS: In part A of the study, from the index of agreement of naming, the figures considered suitable for inclusion in the adapted version were selected. In part B, all the figures had a response concordance level over 70%. CONCLUSION: Figures in the Modified MT Beta-86 test suitable for retention in the new version of the instrument were identified. Analysis of low sample recognition was used to identify boards for replacement, and those for retention, in the new version of the test.

The history of Brazilian neuropsychology is traced at different neuropsycholinguistic stages with a focus on the importance of sociocultural factors. We first focus on language disorders, the sequelae of injuries in the left hemisphere, and neuropsychology restricted to the medical field in Europe, the United States, and Brazil. In the middle of the last century, attention to the interdisciplinary importance of studies on the right hemisphere began. Studies consequently emerged on the individual variability of brain function with both biological and cultural origins. Based on this approach, Brazilian studies on aphasic children and illiterate aphasic persons were disseminated internationally. In the 1970s, cognitive neuropsychology began in England, highlighting dysfunctions in reading and writing processes. The characteristics of writing systems within each language became relevant for the manifestations of acquired dyslexia. Brazilian studies showed deficits in Portuguese and Japanese writing caused by brain lesions. During this scientific journey, scientific societies and postgraduate programs in Brazil were created to facilitate exchanges and communication among young researchers. By the end of the last century and in the early 2000s, the growth of the neuropsychology of aging raised awareness of the complexity of sociocultural factors, not only on language research but also according to the level of education, frequency of reading and writing habits, school type, and interactions among these factors and biological factors, especially between the level of education and age. From this historical standpoint, we outline future directions and perspectives in the field of Brazilian neuropsychology.
