RESUMEN: La ventilación pulmonar es un proceso mecánico en el que los músculos respiratorios actúan coordinadamente para mantener la oxigenación en el organismo. Así, cualquier alteración en el desempeño de estos músculos puede reducir la efectividad del proceso. Los músculos respiratorios se diferencian de otros músculos esqueléticos, debido al apoyo vital que brindan a través de sus contracciones rítmicas. La estructura y el sistema energético de estos músculos están especialmente adaptados para realizar esta función. La composición de los músculos respiratorios es especial; son pequeñas y presentan una abundante red capilar, lo que les otorga un alto nivel aeróbico y resistencia a la fatiga. La regulación coordinada del sistema renina-angiotensina local, proporciona un adecuado flujo sanguíneo y suministro de energía a las miofibrillas del músculo esquelético. En concreto, este rendimiento dependerá en gran medida del flujo sanguíneo y del consumo de glucosa, regulado por el sistema renina-angiotensina. Aquí, la enzima convertidora de angiotensina es responsable de degradar las kininas, que finalmente regulan la bioenergía muscular y la glucosa entre el vaso sanguíneo y el músculo esquelético. El objetivo de esta breve comunicación es describir la estructura de los músculos respiratorios y su asociación con el gen de la enzima convertidora de angiotensina.

SUMMARY: Pulmonary ventilation is a mechanical process in which the respiratory muscles act in coordination to maintain the oxygenation of the organism. Any alteration in the performance of these muscles may reduce the effectiveness of the process. The respiratory muscles differ from the other skeletal muscles in the vital support that they provide through rhythmiccontractions. The structure and energy system of the muscles are specially adapted to perform this function. The composition of the respiratory muscles is exceptional; they are small, and present an abundant capillary network, endowing them with a high aerobic level and resistance to fatigue. Coordinated regulation of the local renin-angiotensin system provides proper blood flow and energy supply in the myofibrils of the skeletal muscle tissue. Specifically, this performance will depend to a large extent on blood flow and glucose consumption, regulated by the renin-angiotensin system. The angiotensin converting enzyme is responsible for degrading kinins, which finally regulate muscle bioenergy and glucose between the blood vessel and the skeletal muscle. The objective of this review is to describe the structure of the respiratory muscles and their association with the angiotensin converting enzyme gene.

Resumen El espacio parafaríngeo es una región donde puede surgir un amplio espectro de tumores, que son poco frecuentes y comprenden solo el 0,5 al 1,5% de las neoplasias de cabeza y cuello. Generalmente, son hallazgos y suelen presentarse como masas asintomáticas. Incluye neoplasias primarias, extensión directa de regiones adyacentes y enfermedad metastásica. La literatura describe múltiples patologías e histologías que pueden surgir de esta zona, entre ellas, tenemos los tumores fibrosos solitarios, que son un espectro de neoplasias mesenquimatosas fibroblásticas de histogénesis incierta, que generalmente involucran la pleura. Son lesiones muy poco frecuentes y su localización parafaríngea es excepcional, siendo su primer reporte en la literatura en 1993. Se presenta el caso de un tumor fibroso solitario del espacio parafaríngeo evaluado en nuestro centro, con su enfrentamiento diagnóstico, resolución quirúrgica y seguimiento respectivo, con el objetivo de presentar esta patología poco frecuente a nuestros colegas y contribuir al conocimiento médico.

Abstract The parapharyngeal space is a region where a wide spectrum of tumors can arise, which are rare and comprise only 0.5% to 1.5% of head and neck neoplasms. They are generally findings and usually present as asymptomatic masses. Includes primary neoplasms, direct extension from adjacent regions, and metastatic disease. The literature describes multiple pathologies and histologies that can arise from this area, among them, we have solitary fibrous tumors, which are a spectrum of fibroblastic mesenchymal neoplasms of uncertain histogenesis, which are generally the pleura. It is a very rare lesion and its parapharyngeal location is exceptional, being its first report in the literature in 1993. We present the case of a solitary fibrous tumor of the parapharyngeal space evaluated in our center, with its diagnos- tic confrontation, surgical resolution and respective follow-up, with the aim of presenting this rare pathology to our colleagues and contributing to medical knowledge.

Resumen El manejo del sangrado en CEF es fundamental, ya que aumenta la tasa de complicaciones. El principal objetivo del manejo perioperatorio es lograr una buena hemostasia, es por esto que se realizó una revisión de las principales recomendaciones de la literatura internacional, que incluye medidas preoperatorias, intraoperatorias y postoperatorias.

Abstract Bleeding is an important factor in FESS since it increases the rate of complications. The main objective of perioperative management is to achieve good hemostasis. This is a review of the main recommendations of the international literature, that includes preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative measures.

Resumen El tumor de Pott es una entidad rara, definida como un absceso subperióstico asociado a osteomielitis del hueso frontal. Suele presentarse como complicación de sinusitis aguda o crónica del seno frontal, y se describe con mayor incidencia en población pediátrica, siendo una complicación grave por su alta morbimortalidad. Se presenta a un paciente pediátrico con tumor de Pott y absceso cerebral posterior a una sinusitis aguda de foco odontogénico, en la que los pilares de tratamiento son drenaje quirúrgico precoz y antibioticoterapia prolongada. Se describe la clínica, manejo médico-quirúrgico y seguimiento posterior, ya que, en ausencia de antecedentes, se debe buscar dirigida- mente enfermedad periodontal y realizar un estudio de inmunodeficiencia primaria.

Abstract Pott’s tumor is a rare entity, defined as a subperiosteal abscess associated with osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. It usually presents as a complication of acute or chronic sinusitis of the frontal sinus and it is described with a higher incidence in the pediatric population, being a serious complication due to its high morbidity and mortality. We present a pediatric patient with Pott’s tumor and brain abscess after acute sinusitis of odontogenic focus, in which the pillars of treatment are an early surgical drainage and prolonged antibiotic therapy. The clinic, medical-surgical management and subsequent follow-up are described, since in the absence of antecedents, periodontal disease should be sought directly and a study of primary immunodeficiency performed.

Abstract Objective: The objective of the study was to analyze the differences between survivors and non-survivors with non-reperfused ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and to identify the predictors of in-hospital mortality. Methods: A retrospective cohort study included non-reperfused STEMI patients from October 2005 to August 2020. Patients were classified into survivors and non-survivors. We compared patient characteristics, treatments, and outcomes among the groups and identified factors associated with in-hospital mortality. Results: We included 2442 patients with non-reperfused STEMI and we found a mortality of 12.7% versus 7.2% in reperfused STEMI. The main reason for non-reperfusion was delayed presentation (96.1%). Non-survivors were older, more often women, and had diabetes, hypertension, or atrial fibrillation. The left main coronary disease was more frequent in non-survivors as well as three-vessel disease. Non-survivors developed more in-hospital heart failure, reinfarction, atrioventricular block, bleeding, stroke, and death. The main predictors for in-hospital mortality were renal dysfunction (HR 3.41), systolic blood pressure < 100 mmHg (HR 2.26), and left ventricle ejection fraction < 40% (HR 1.97). Conclusion: Mortality and adverse outcomes occur more frequently in non-reperfused STEMI. Non-survivors tend to be older, with more comorbidities, and have more adverse in-hospital outcomes.

Resumen Objetivo: Analizar las diferencias entre los sobrevivientes y no sobrevivientes con infarto agudo de miocardio no reperfundido y conocer los predictores de mortalidad intrahospitalaria. Métodos: Estudio de cohorte retrospectiva que incluyó pacientes con infarto agudo de miocardio no reperfundido de octubre de 2005 a agosto de 2020. Se clasificaron los pacientes de acuerdo a su estado de sobrevida y se compararon las características clínicas, tratamientos y desenlaces para poder identificar los predictores de mortalidad intrahospitalaria. Resultados: Se incluyeron 2442 pacientes con infarto agudo de miocardio no reperfundido, en los que se encontró una mortalidad de 12.7% vs 7.2% los que si recibieron tratamiento de reperfusión. La principal razón para no recibir tratamiento de reperfusión fue el retraso en la atención médica (96.1%). Los no sobrevivientes tuvieron mayor edad, fueron mujeres y tuvieron mayor frecuencia de diabetes, hipertensión y fibrilación atrial. El tronco de la coronaria izquierda y la enfermedad trivascular fueron más frecuentes en los que no sobrevivieron. Los pacientes que no sobrevivieron desarrollaron más insuficiencia cardiaca, reinfarto, bloqueo atrioventricular, sangrados, evento vascular cerebral y muerte. Los principales predictores de mortalidad intrahospitalaria fueron: insuficiencia renal (HR 3.41), tensión arterial sistólica al ingreso < 100 mmHg (HR 2.26) y fracción de eyección del ventrículo izquierdo < 40% (HR 1.97). Conclusiones: Los pacientes con infarto de miocardio no reperfundido tienen mayor mortalidad y desenlaces adversos. Los no sobrevivientes fueron mayores, con más comorbilidades y desarrollaron más desenlaces adversos intrahospitalarios.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 has brought emerging public health emergency and new challenges. It configures a complex panorama that has been requiring a set of coordinated actions and has innovation as one of its pillars. In particular, the use of digital tools plays an important role. In this context, this study presents a screening algorithm that uses a machine learning model to assess the probability of a diagnosis of COVID-19 based on clinical data. METHODS: This algorithm was made available for free on an online platform. The project was developed in three phases. First, an machine learning risk model was developed. Second, a system was developed that would allow the user to enter patient data. Finally, this platform was used in teleconsultations carried out during the pandemic period. RESULTS: The number of accesses during the period was 4,722. A total of 126 assistances were carried out from March 23, 2020, to June 16, 2020, and 107 satisfaction survey returns were received. The response rate to the questionnaires was 84.92%, and the ratings obtained regarding the satisfaction level were higher than 4.8 (on a 0–5 scale). The Net Promoter Score was 94.4. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first online application of its kind that presents a probabilistic assessment of COVID-19 using machine learning models exclusively based on the symptoms and clinical characteristics of users. The level of satisfaction was high. The integration of machine learning tools in telemedicine practice has great potential.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Superposing 3D models is an imminent need. However, current methods rely on marking multiple points on the maxilla and mandible, which could increase point marking and overlapping errors. Objective: This study aimed at developing a method for superimposing 3D models of the maxillary and mandibular arches with Autodesk Inventor® engineering software, using a single universal coordinate system (UCS) point superposition. Methods: A total of 104 STL (stereolithography) models of the maxillary and mandibular arches exported from My iTero® platform were retrospectively selected, in which T0 and T1 were the initial and refinement periods, respectively (n=26 per group). The X, Y, and Z coordinates associated with a single point in each arch were inserted into the models with SlicerCMF® software for model orientation. The arch models with UCS registration were transferred to Autodesk Inventor® for superimposition and to measure tooth movements performed during Invisalign® treatment. Arch expansion, intrusion and rotation were analyzed by two examiners. The statistics were performed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), Dahlberg’s formula, and t-test (p<0.05). Results: A reliable method of superimposing 3D digital models using a single UCS point in the maxilla and mandible was developed. ICC showed excellent intra- and inter-examiner correlation (ICC>0.90). A systematic error was not found concerning linear and angular measurements (<1mm and <1.5°, respectively). Digital dental movements could be analyzed, including arch expansion, dental intrusion, and tooth rotation. Conclusions: The developed method was proven reliable and reproducible for superimposing 3D models of the maxillary and mandibular arches by using UCS system.

RESUMO Introdução: A sobreposição de modelos 3D é uma necessidade iminente. No entanto, os métodos atuais dependem da marcação de múltiplos pontos na maxila e na mandíbula, o que pode aumentar a incorporação de erros no processo de sobreposição. Objetivo: O objetivo desse estudo foi desenvolver um método para sobrepor modelos 3D das arcadas superior e inferior utilizando o software de engenharia Autodesk Inventor®, por meio da marcação de um único ponto em cada arcada, usando o sistema de coordenadas universal (UCS). Métodos: No total, 104 modelos STL das arcadas superior e inferior exportados da plataforma My iTero® foram selecionados retrospectivamente, onde T0 foi o período inicial e T1, o de refinamento (n=26 por grupo). As coordenadas X, Y e Z associadas a um único ponto em cada arcada foram inseridas nos modelos usando o software SlicerCMF®. Os modelos com os pontos UCS demarcados foram transferidos para o software Autodesk Inventor® para realizar a sobreposição e medir os movimentos dentários realizados durante o tratamento com Invisalign®. Os movimentos de expansão, intrusão e rotação foram analisados por dois examinadores. A análise estatística foi realizada usando os coeficientes de correlação intra-classe (ICC), fórmula de Dahlberg e teste t (p<0,05). Resultados: Foi desenvolvido um método confiável de sobreposição de modelos digitais 3D usando um único ponto UCS na maxila e mandíbula. O ICC apresentou excelente correlação intra e inter-avaliadores (ICC>0,90). Não foi encontrado erro sistemático nas medidas lineares e angulares (<1mm e <1,5°, respectivamente). Os movimentos dentários puderam ser analisados por meio do método proposto, incluindo expansão da arcada, intrusão e rotação dentária. Conclusão: O método desenvolvido provou ser confiável e reprodutível para sobreposição de modelos 3D das arcadas superior e inferior usando o sistema UCS com marcação de ponto único.

ABSTRACT The objective was to examine the effect of two short-term protein-energy supplementation (STPES) strategies at the rearing phase on the performance of Nellore calves grazing on Mombaça or Marandu grasses. The experiment used 72 calves (7-mo old, 229±3.0 kg body weight [BW]) allotted in a completely randomized block design to four treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement: two forage cultivars (Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça vs. Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu) and two STPES (WEAN – STPES immediately after weaning vs. TRAN – STPES in the transition of dry-rainy). The WEAN animals received 1 kg day−1 (n = 36) of a protein-energy supplement, whereas TRAN animals were subjected to STPES at 2 g/kg BW day−1 (n = 36), both for 53 days. Every 28 days, calves were weighed to measure performance, and pastures were sampled to evaluate productive and structural traits. Growth performance was analyzed considering a completely randomized block design with a 2 × 2 arrangement of treatment, whereas forage responses included repeated measures. Marandu had a higher forage mass (3,586 kg) than Mombaça (2,890 kg), but there was no difference in forage mass in each cultivar between preconditioning periods. The nutritional composition of Marandu and Mombaça cultivars did not differ and had similar results of in vitro fermentation variables. Stocking rate was higher for WEAN, in the Mombaça pastures. The STPES at weaning on Marandu provided greater gains per area. When applied in the period following the weaning and coinciding with the dry season, the STPES improves the performance of newly weaned calves kept on Marandu and Mombaça grasses.

Resumen Los tumores malignos de cavidad nasal y cavidades paranasales son poco frecuentes y sus síntomas de presentación suelen ser unilaterales e inespecíficos; éstos incluyen: epistaxis, rinorrea y obstrucción nasal. Encontramos una amplia variedad histológica de tumores, entre ellos tenemos el angiosarcoma nasal, que es considerado una rareza y el diagnóstico definitivo lo da la confirmación anatomopatológica complementado con estudios inmunohistoquímicos. Su modalidad de tratamiento incluye múltiples opciones, pero la cirugía radical temprana con márgenes negativos asociado a radioterapia adyuvante, ofrece el mejor pronóstico. Se presenta a un paciente adulto masculino con un angiosarcoma nasal izquierdo que fue detectado de forma precoz y se manejó con cirugía radical y radioterapia.

Abstract Malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal cavities are rare, while presenting symptoms are usually unilateral and nonspecific like, epistaxis, rhinorrhea, and nasal obstruction. There are many histological varieties of tumors, among them we have nasal angiosarcoma, which is considered a rarity pathology. The definitive diagnosis is given by biopsy confirmation complemented with immunohistochemical studies. Its treatment modality includes multiple options, but early radical surgery with negative margins associated with adjuvant radiotherapy offers the best prognosis. We present a male adult patient with a left nasal angiosarcoma that was detected early and managed with radical surgery and radiotherapy.

Abstract Background Children and adolescents with congenital heart disease may be more likely to develop atherogenic cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. Therefore, the early identification of risk factors and intervention in childhood may be crucial for a good quality of life and longevity. Objectives To describe the distribution of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c) levels and its association with socioeconomic, clinical and cardiovascular risk factors in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease. Methods Cross-sectional study with children and adolescents aged between 5 and 18 years, with congenital heart disease. Socioeconomic, clinical and cardiovascular risk factors were evaluated. HDL-c concentrations were evaluated by the direct method and categorized as desirable (>45 mg/dL), borderline (40-45 mg/dL) and low (<40 mg/dL). We also assessed the “undesirable” levels, consisting of the sum of “borderline” and “low” values for comparative purposes. The multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the factor associated with undesirable HDL-c levels. A p<0.05 value was adopted as statistically significant. Results Mean HDL-c was 51.2 mg/dL (SD 12.6), with a prevalence of 33.2% of undesirable HDL-c. In the multivariate analysis, C-reactive protein levels ≥ 3mg/dL (OR 3.26; 95% CI 1.32-8.04), age ≥ 10 years old (OR: 2.11; 95% CI 1.12-3.99) and undesirable levels of triglycerides (OR 2.21; 95% CI 1.13-4.75) were associated with undesirable HDL-c. Conclusion In this sample of children and adolescents with congenital heart disease, almost one third presented low or borderline HDL-c levels. Age ≥10 years, C-reactive protein and triglycerides were associated with undesirable HDL-c levels. These factors should be considered in the prevention of cerebrovascular diseases in adulthood in this population.

Resumo Fundamento Apenas dois artigos abordam os resultados precoces de pacientes com síndrome do coração esquerdo hipoplásico (SHCE) submetidos à operação de Norwood, no Brasil. Objetivos Avaliamos pacientes com SHCE submetidos ao primeiro estágio da operação de Norwood para identificar os fatores preditivos de mortalidade precoce (nos primeiros 30 dias após a cirurgia) e intermediária (desde a sobrevida precoce até o procedimento de Glenn). Métodos Foram incluídos pacientes com SHCE submetidos em nosso serviço ao primeiro estágio da operação de Norwood de janeiro de 2016 a abril de 2019. Dados demográficos, anatômicos e cirúrgicos foram analisados. Os desfechos foram mortalidade precoce (nos primeiros 30 dias após a cirurgia), mortalidade intermediária (desde a sobrevida precoce até o procedimento de Glenn) e a necessidade de suporte pós-operatório com ECMO. Foram realizadas análises univariadas e multivariadas e calculados odds ratios, com intervalos de confiança de 95%. Um valor de p < 0,05 foi considerado estatisticamente significativo. Resultados Um total de 80 pacientes com SHCE foram submetidos ao primeiro estágio da operação de Norwood. A taxa de sobrevida em 30 dias foi de 91,3% e a taxa de sobrevida intermediária foi de 81,3%. Quatorze pacientes (17,5%) necessitaram de suporte com ECMO. Menor peso (p=0,033), estenose aórtica (vs atresia aórtica; p=0,036) e necessidade de suporte pós-operatório com ECMO (p=0,009) foram fatores preditivos independentes para mortalidade em 30 dias. A estenose da valva mitral ( vs atresia da valva mitral; p=0,041) foi um fator preditivo independente para mortalidade intermediária. Conclusão O presente estudo inclui a maior coorte brasileira de pacientes com SHCE submetidos ao primeiro estágio da operação de Norwood na era recente. Nossas taxas de sobrevida foram comparáveis às mais altas taxas de sobrevida relatadas globalmente. Baixo peso corporal, estenose valvar aórtica e necessidade de suporte pós-operatório com ECMO foram preditores independentes para mortalidade em 30 dias. A estenose da valva mitral foi o único fator preditivo independente para mortalidade intermediária.

Abstract Background Only two papers have addressed the early outcomes of patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) undergoing the Norwood operation, in Brazil. Objectives We evaluated patients with HLHS undergoing the first-stage Norwood operation in order to identify the predictive factors for early (within the first 30 days after surgery) and intermediate (from early survival up to the Glenn procedure) mortality. Methods Patients with HLHS undergoing the stage I Norwood procedure from January 2016 through April 2019, in our service, were enrolled. Demographic, anatomical, and surgical data were analyzed. Endpoints were early mortality (within the first 30 days after surgery), intermediate mortality (from early survival up to the Glenn procedure) and the need for postoperative ECMO support. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed, and odds ratios, with 95% confidence intervals, were calculated. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results A total of 80 patients with HLHS underwent the stage I Norwood procedure. The 30-day survival rate was 91.3% and the intermediate survival rate 81.3%. Fourteen patients (17.5%) required ECMO support. Lower weight (p=0.033), aortic stenosis (vs aortic atresia; p=0.036), and the need for postoperative ECMO support (p=0.009) were independent predictive factors for 30-day mortality. Mitral valve stenosis (vs mitral valve atresia; p=0.041) was an independent predictive factor for intermediate mortality. Conclusion The present study includes the largest Brazilian cohort of patients with HLHS undergoing the stage I Norwood procedure in the recent era. Our survival rates were comparable to the highest survival rates reported globally. Low body weight, aortic valve stenosis, and the need for postoperative ECMO support were independent predictors for 30-day mortality. Mitral valve stenosis was the only independent predictive factor for intermediate mortality.

ABSTRACT The high production of jamelão (Syzygium cumini) during harvest and the lack of information about it emphasize the development of new processing technologies for this fruit since it has been proven that its different parts have functional properties. The objectives of this work were to evaluate the physical-chemical characteristics and to determine the content of bioactive compounds and the antioxidant activity present in the pulp and peel of the jamelão in order to assess which one has the greatest industrial potential. For this, the fruit was pulped and separated into peel and pulp. The peel was subsequently dehydrated, resulting in three samples: pulp, fresh peel, and dried peel. It was observed that drying the peel provided an increase in the values of ash, lipids, acidity, and soluble solids to a higher or equal level to those of the pulp. In addition, total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, total monomeric anthocyanins, and total antioxidant activity of the fresh peel were found to be ten times higher than those of the pulp. Thus, the peel, a by-product of jamelão, has great potential to be used in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

SUMMARY: The leg muscles are organized in anterior, lateral and posterior compartments. The posterior compartment is usually divided in two layers: superficial and deep. The deep muscles of the posterior compartment of the leg are known to mainly plantar flexion and toes flexion. In comparison to the other leg compartments, variations of the posterior one are rare. These variants often involve the presence or absence of one or more muscles, and they have differences among origin and insertion, which leads to confusion between anatomists. We aim to describe a case of a male cadaver that possessed three supernumerary muscles in the lateral and posterior compartments of both legs: the peroneus quartus muscle and two accessory bellies of the flexor digitorum longus. This presentation seems to be very rare and scarcely reported in the literature. These variants have the potential of causing nervous or vascular compression, thus leading to tarsal tunnel syndrome or a symptomatic peroneus quartus. The clinical and surgical implications of this abnormal presentation is discussed.

RESUMEN: Los músculos de la pierna están organizados en compartimentos anterior, lateral y posterior. El compartimento posterior por lo general es dividido en dos capas: superficial y profunda. Se sabe que los músculos profundos del compartimento posterior de la pierna se caracterizan principalmente por participar de la flexión plantar y la flexión de los dedos de los pies. En comparación con los otros compartimentos de la pierna, las variaciones musculares en el compartimiento posterior son raras. Estas variantes suelen implicar la presencia o ausencia de uno o más músculos y presentan diferencias en el origen y en la inserción, lo que conduce a confusión entre los anatomistas. Nuestro objetivo fue describir el caso de un cadáver masculino que poseía tres músculos supernumerarios en los compartimentos lateral y posterior de ambas piernas: el músculo fibular cuarto y dos vientres accesorios del músculo flexor largo de los dedos. Esta presentación parece ser muy rara y escasamente reportada en la literatura. Estas variantes musculares tienen el potencial de causar compresión nerviosa o vascular, lo que conduce al síndrome del túnel del tarso o un cuarto músculo fibular sintomático. Se discuten las implicaciones clínicas y quirúrgicas de esta presentación anormal.

Abstract This study reports the genetic diversity among Chilean heritage blood-flesh peaches and the characterization of phytochemicals and bioactive compounds present in these fruits. A genetic diversity analysis using 7,934 SNP markers was performed. The average observed heterozygosity (Ho=0.09) was very low in the 75 Chilean blood-flesh peach trees, whereas 14 commercial peach varieties had significantly higher levels of heterozygosity (Ho=0.32). Furthermore, the blood-flesh peach lines were genetically similar, and all of these lines were genetically different from the commercial varieties. A comparative analysis was carried out between the epicarp and mesocarp of the peach fruits. Fruit quality parameters were evaluated at harvest (weight, size, firmness and soluble solids), and concentrations of total polyphenols, anthocyanins, carotenoids, as were macro (P, K, Ca, Mg) and microelements (Fe, Zn, Mn, B, Cu). These analyses showed that blood-flesh peaches have high concentrations of anthocyanins (cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) and cyanidin-3-rutinoside (C3R)) when compared to commercial varieties with white or yellow mesocarps. A comparison was performed among Chinese, French and Chilean varieties, with similar values found for the antioxidant compounds. No significant differences in the micro- and macroelement contents were detected in these blood-flesh fruits compared to commercial varieties.

Resumen Este estudio reporta por primera vez la diversidad genética entre duraznos betarraga de Chile, así como la caracterización de los compuestos fitoquímicos y bioactivos presentes en estos frutos. Se realizó un análisis de diversidad genética utilizando 7.934 marcadores SNP. La heterocigosidad promedio observada (Ho=0,09) fue muy baja en los 75 durazneros betarraga chilenos, mientras que 14 variedades comerciales de durazno tuvieron niveles significativamente más altos de heterocigosidad (Ho=0,32). Además, las líneas de durazno betarraga fueron genéticamente similares entre sí, y todas estas líneas fueron genéticamente diferentes de las variedades comerciales. Se realizó un análisis comparativo, entre epicarpio y mesocarpio de los frutos de durazno. Se evaluaron parámetros de calidad de frutos a la cosecha (peso, tamaño, firmeza y sólidos solubles) y concentraciones de polifenoles totales, antocianinas, carotenoides, así como macro (P, K, Ca, Mg) y microelementos (Fe, Zn, Mn, B, Cu). Estos análisis mostraron que el durazno betarraga tiene altas concentraciones de antocianinas (cianidina-3-glucósido (C3G) y cianidina-3-rutinósido, C3R) en comparación con las variedades comerciales con mesocarpios blancos o amarillos. Se realizó una comparación entre las variedades Chinas, Francesas y Chilenas que muestran valores similares para los compuestos antioxidantes. No se detectaron diferencias significativas en el contenido de micro y macroelementos en estos frutos de pulpa roja en comparación con las variedades comerciales.

RESUMO: Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da calagem (com e sem) e do biocarvão (com e sem) sobre o crescimento e a produção de forragem do sorgo forrageiro cv. BRS Ponta Negra e nas propriedades químicas do Neossolo Quartzarênico no ambiente Semiárido. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com tratamentos em esquema fatorial 2x2, correspondendo a aplicação ou não do calcário (0 e 2,5 t ha-1) e do biocarvão (0 e 12,5 t ha-1). O biochar era produzido a partir de galhos de caju. O experimento foi conduzido em parcelas de 16 m² onde foi cultivada a cultivar de sorgo forrageiro BRS Ponta Negra. Foram avaliadas as características químicas do solo, os atributos de produção e as características estruturais da cultivar de sorgo estudada. Não houve interação entre os fatores. O uso do biochar aumentou o pH e os teores de Ca e P no solo e contribuiu para o aumento da massa da panícula (2,51 t ha-1 de MS). A aplicação de calcário afetou o teor de Ca no solo, assim a dose de 2,5 t ha-1 resultou em maiores valores de diâmetro do colmo (15,25 mm), massa da panícula e massa do colmo (2,63 e 7,50 t ha-1 de MS, respectivamente). Portanto, esses resultados permitem traçar estrategias de uso do calcário e biochar para produção forrageira em ambientes semiáridos com solos arenosos. Pois, esses materias melhoram alguns atributos quimicos do solo e a produção do sorgo forrageiro. Vale ressaltar que as condições edofoclimáticas podem alterar os padrões de resposta observados nesta pesquisa. Portanto, a pesquisa em outras regiões é essencial.

ABSTRACT: This research evaluated the effect of liming (with and without) and biochar (with and without) on sorghum cv. BRS Ponta Negra growth and Arenosol chemical properties in the Semiarid environment. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with treatments in a 2x2 factorial scheme, corresponding to the application or not of lime (0 and 2.5 t ha-1) and biochar (0 and 12.5 t ha-1). Biochar was produced from cashew branches. The experiment was conducted in 16 m² plots where the forage sorghum cultivar BRS Ponta Negra was cultivated. The soil chemical characteristics, the production attributes, and the structural characteristics of the sorghum cultivar studied were evaluated. There was no interaction between factors. The use of biochar increased the pH and Ca and P contents in the soil and contributed to increasing the panicle mass (2.51 t ha-1 of DM). Lime application affected the soil Ca content as the dose of 2.5 t ha-1 resulted in higher values of culm diameter (15.25 mm), panicle mass, and culm mass (2.63 and 7.50 t ha-1 of DM, respectively). Therefore, these results allowed to outline strategies for the use of limestone and biochar for forage production in semiarid environments in sandy soils. Because, these materials improve some chemical attributes of the soil and the production of forage sorghum. It is noteworthy that edophoclimatic conditions can change the response patterns observed in this research. Therefore, research in other regions is essential.
