RESUMO: As terras altas do sul do Brasil contribuem com 40% da produção brasileira de caqui. Embora em expansão, a produção de caqui enfrenta grandes problemas causados pela antracnose (mancha preta), incluindo o apodrecimento dos frutos e necrose das folhas. Várias espécies de Colletotrichum (C. horii, C. gloeosporioides, entre outras) estão envolvidas com a antracnose do caqui em todo mundo. Para identificar espécies de Colletotrichum associadas à antracnose de caqui nas terras altas do sul do Brasil, 34 isolados foram analisados através da região parcial de ITS-rDNA e sequências parciais dos genes GAPDH e TUB2, características morfológicas e virulência em frutos e folhas de caqui. Os dados mostraram uma alta prevalência de C. horii (85,3%), que associada à sua alta virulência em frutos e folhas, confirma um grau considerável de preferência pelo hospedeiro. Além disso, foram identificadas outras espécies C. aenigma, C. asianum, C. fructicola, e C. nymphaeae, mas as três últimas exibiram baixa virulência nos frutos e não foram capazes de produzir sintomas nas folhas. Até onde sabemos, esta é a primeira referência sobre C. asianum em caqui. Os presentes dados podem contribuir para uma melhor compreensão da etiologia da antracnose em caqui doce no sul do Brasil e isso pode ser útil para estudos epidemiológicos e para o desenvolvimento de medidas de controle da doença.

ABSTRACT: The highlands of Southern Brazil contribute with 40% of Brazilian persimmon production. Although expanding, persimmon production faces major problems caused by anthracnose disease (black spot), including fruit rot and necrosis of leaves. Several Colletotrichum species (C. horii, C. gloeosporioides, among others) are implicated in persimmon anthracnose around the world. To identify Colletotrichum species associated with persimmon anthracnose in the highlands of Southern Brazil, 34 isolates were analyzed by ITS-rDNA partial region, GAPDH, and TUB2 partial gene sequences, morphological characteristics, and virulence on persimmon fruits and leaves. Data showed a high prevalence of C. horii (85.3%), that associated with its high virulence on fruits and leaves, confirm a considerable degree of host preference. Moreover, other species C. aenigma, C. asianum, C. fructicola, and C. nymphaeae, were identified, but the last three ones exhibited low virulence on fruits and were not able to produce symptoms on leaves. As far as we know this is the first reference on C. asianum in persimmon. The present data may contribute to a better understanding of the etiology of anthracnose in sweet persimmon in Southern Brazil, and it will be useful for epidemiological studies and the development of disease management measures.

Abstract The present study describes the community diversity and gives a seasonal distribution of an intertidal macroalgal assemblage at Prainha Beach, Arraial do Cabo City in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Sampling was performed during four seasons of a 1-year period. Organisms were sampled and photographed using photoquadrats to quantify relative coverage. Ninety-six taxa of macroalgae were registered, including 23 chlorophytes, 19 ochrophytes, and 54 rhodophytes, while three barnacles, seven mollusks, one isopod, and one polychaete were recorded among the zoobenthos. In the upper intertidal zone, the coverage was frequently dominated by invertebrates. Macroalgae always dominated the middle and lower zones, covering almost 100 % in both zones. The highest values of species diversity (H’), richness (S), and turnover rates were found during the transition from spring to summer, which coincided with the upwelling period. A comparison with the 1980’s flora revealed that the major changes in the macroalgal assemblage were among species belonging to the same genera, unless new additions were provided. The combination of photoquadrats and minimally destructive sampling allowed a detailed description of the composition and structural characteristics of the intertidal zone, a methodology that should be applied to study protected marine areas.

ABSTRACT Pantanal da Nhecolândia is one of the most well-preserved areas in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Located in the southern part of the Taquari River megafan, it is in tectonic contact with the fault escarpments of the Maracaju-Campo Grande plateaus to the east and with the fault escarpments of the Bodoquena plateau to the west, which continue to north. To the south and to the north, the limits are marked respectively by the lineaments of the Negro and Taquari Rivers. Nhecolândia is characterized by the existence of at least 17,631 lagoons, 17,050 (96.70 %) of which are of fresh water (baías) and 577 (3.3 %) of salty water (salinas). Studies based on (Landsat) satellite images and use of free software (QGIS, version 2.8.3) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) revealed that the major axes of the lagoons are aligned along two directions, NE (62.49 %) and NW (37.51 %), with modes concentrated between N30-40E and N30-40W, suggesting in both cases the role played by tectonic control (neotectonics) in their formation. Evidences of fluvial origin are presented for these groups of lagoons, as well as for their tectonic alignment.

O Porto de Sepetiba, Estado do Rio de Janeiro, foi escolhido, no Brasil, como área-piloto do projeto "Remoção de barreiras para a implementação efetiva do controle de água de lastro e medidas de gestão em países em desenvolvimento" (Programa GloBallast). Para possibilitar comparações, os seis países participantes do Programa GloBallast foram orientados a adotar a mesma metodologia para o levantamento preliminar da biota das áreas-pilotos valorizando a identificação em nível de espécie. O presente estudo teve como objetivo aplicar metodologia estabelecida pelo Centro para Pesquisa sobre Espécies Marinhas Introduzidas, da Austrália (Procedimento CRIMP), com algumas adaptações, no levantamento florístico das macroalgas de substratos consolidados naturais da área-piloto do Porto de Sepetiba. Coletas de macroalgas foram realizadas em novembro/2001, em nove locais da baía de Sepetiba e adjacências, desde a franja da região sublitorânea até cerca de -4 m de profundidade. Em cada local, seis quadrados de 0,1 m² de área foram raspados. O material foi depositado no Herbário do Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro (RB). Das 96 espécies identificadas (20 Chlorophyta, 16 Phaeophyta, 60 Rhodophyta), 12 não haviam sido citadas anteriormente para a área de estudo. Cladophora pellucidoidea C. Hoek, Coelothrix irregularis (Harv.) Boergesen e Acrochaetium savianum (Menegh.) Nägeli são ocorrências novas para o Estado. Não há indícios de que as novas ocorrências equivalem a espécies recentemente introduzidas por meio das atividades portuárias. O procedimento metodológico adotado mostrou-se eficiente, resultando em listagem de espécies comparável às de levantamentos florísticos com maior esforço amostral e complementando os dados pretéritos existentes para a baía de Sepetiba e adjacências. No entanto, ressalta-se a importância de uma reavaliação das escalas temporal e espacial da estratégia de amostragem, em estudos futuros. Recomenda-se a padronização metodológica para o levantamento florístico de áreas portuárias como a baía de Sepetiba, e de outras áreas do litoral brasileiro sujeitas à interferência do homem, tomando por base o procedimento CRIMP.

The Port of Sepetiba, State of Rio de Janeiro, was chosen as the Brazilian pilot area for the project "Global Ballast Water Management Programme" (GloBallast Programme). For comparative purposes, six countries were guided by the GloBallast Programme to follow the same methodology, emphasizing identification of organisms to the specific level during the preliminary biota survey. This study aimed to apply the methodology established by the Australian Centre for Research on Introduced Marine Pests (CRIMP procedures) for the floristic survey of macroalgae of natural hard substrate of the area of Port of Sepetiba. Macroalgal samplings were carried out in November 2001 at nine sites situated in Sepetiba Bay and adjacent area, from the sublittoral fringe to ca. - 4 m deep. At each site, six 0.1 m² quadrates were scraped. Specimens were sent to the Herbarium of the "Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro" (RB). Ninety six species were identified (20 Chlorophyta, 16 Phaeophyta, and 60 Rhodophyta); 12 species have not been cited to the study area by the preceding studies. Cladophora pellucidoidea C. Hoek, Coelothrix irregularis (Harv.) Boergesen, and Acrochaetium savianum (Menegh.) Nägeli are recorded for the first time to the state of Rio de Janeiro. There are no evidences to conclude that the new records correspond to recently introduced species through the port activities. The methodological procedures proved to be efficient because they produced a species list to be comparable to those of taxonomic surveys with higher sampling effort. They also enlarged the existing information about the phycological flora of Sepetiba Bay. Nevertheless, for future studies, we point out the importance of a re-evaluation of the temporal and spatial scales of the sampling strategy. We recommend the methodological standardization of floristic surveys for port areas such as Sepetiba Bay, as well as other Brazilian coastal areas subjected to human interferences, taking into account the CRIMP procedures.

Objetivo: estudar a freqüência do uso de medicamentos no pós-parto imediato e verificar possíveis interferências nas recomendações quanto à amamentação.Métodos: foi realizado um estudo transversal em quatro maternidades de Belo Horizonte, no período de julho de 1998 a julho de 1999, incluindo 2.173 parturientes. A amostra foi calculada com base em dados da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde sobre o número de partos ocorridos nessas instituições, no ano de 1995, ou seja, em torno de 5% do total em um ano. A distribuição da amostra foi aleatória, utilizando o calendário de semanas epidemiológicas. Através de entrevistas junto às mães, usando um questionário próprio, e da coleta de dados obtidos de prontuários médicos da mãe e do recém-nascido, foi avaliada a freqüência do uso de medicamentos no pós-parto imediato. Os medicamentos foram agrupados em categorias quanto à compatibilidade com amamentação, à incompatibilidade, ao uso criterioso em monitorar e observar o recém-nascido para possíveis efeitos indesejáveis.Resultados: de um total de 2.173 mulheres, em 2.090 (96,2%) foram prescritos medicamentos no pós-parto imediato. Dos medicamentos utilizados, 2.054 (98,3%) foram de drogas sem contra-indicação à amamentação natural; 338 (16,2%) foram de drogas sem informações seguras, e 3 (0,14%) de drogas contra-indicadas à amamentação. Conclusões: observou-se um amplo uso de medicamentos pelas mães nas maternidades de Belo Horizonte, no pós-parto imediato. A maioria das drogas é compatível com a amamentação, o que parece não influenciar negativamente a prática do aleitamento materno.

Objective: to study the frequency of medication use in the immediate postpartum period and to evaluate possible effects on breastfeeding. Methods: a cross-sectional study was carried out with 2,173 women that gave birth in four hospitals in Belo Horizonte, a city in the southeast of Brazil, between July 1998 and July 1999. The sample was calculated by means of the data obtained from the City's Health Department according to the number of labors made in these four hospitals in 1995, which amounts to approximately 5% of the total number that usually occurs within a year. Women were randomized according to the calendar of epidemiological weeks. The interviews consisted of a questionnaire through which information about breastfeeding and sociodemographic data were obtained. In addition, the data were collected from mothers' and newborns' medical records. The drugs were classified according to their compatibility and incompatibility with breastfeeding, and were monitored as to the possible adverse effects on newborn infants.Results: 2,090 (96.2%) of 2,173 women received drug therapy in the immediate postpartum period. Among the drugs used, 2,054 (98.3%) were not contraindicated for breastfeeding; 338 (16.2%) did not contain safe information, and 3 (0.14%) were contraindicated. Conclusions: although drug therapy was widespread among the mothers followed up at these four hospitals, there seems to be no influence on breastfeeding. Fortunately, most prescribed drugs did not interfere with mothers' and infants' health.
