Abstract The bovine respiratory complex (BRC) is the leading cause of disease and death in beef cattle worldwide. It is a multifactorial infectious syndrome caused by different viruses and bacteria that reduce the productive efficiency and cause economic losses. In Mexico, BRC has been reported in all regions where cattle are fattened; however, these reports lack information on the presence of bovine respiratory coronavirus (BCV). This makes it necessary to have reliable and accurate diagnostic tools for detecting the presence of BCV in beef cattle fattened in Mexico, in order to propose appropriate sanitary measures for their clinical management. In this work, a real-time-PCR molecular diagnostic platform (rt-PCR) was developed to amplify a fragment of the BCV S protein in nasal exudate samples. When applying the rt-PCR platform for BCV in seemingly healthy beef cattle with signs of respiratory disease associated to BRC, 19/50 (38 %) were found to be positive, confirming the presence of this virus in the cattle of the region. The results of this work constitute the first report on the presence of the BCV associated to the BRC in the cattle region of northwestern Mexico and establish the bases for future research about the role that this virus plays in the presentation of the pathology of the BRC in beef cattle exploitation systems in this region and across the country.

Resumen El complejo respiratorio bovino (CRB) es la principal causa de enfermedad y muerte en el ganado de engorda en todo el mundo. Es un síndrome infeccioso multifactorial provocado por distintos virus y bacterias que disminuyen la eficiencia productiva y ocasionan pérdidas económicas. En México, el CRB se ha reportado en todas las regiones donde se engorda ganado; sin embargo, esos reportes carecen de información sobre la presencia del coronavirus respiratorio bovino (CVB), haciendo necesario contar con herramientas de diagnóstico confiables y precisas para detectar la presencia de CVB en el ganado que se engorda en México, para proponer las medidas sanitarias apropiadas para su manejo clínico. En este trabajo, se desarrolló una plataforma de diagnóstico molecular de PCR en tiempo real (rt-PCR) que amplifica un fragmento de la proteína S del CVB en muestras de exudado nasal. Al aplicar la plataforma rt-PCR para CVB en bovinos de engorda en aparente estado de salud y con signos de enfermedad respiratoria asociados a CRB se encontró que 19/50 (38 %) resultaron positivos, confirmando la presencia de ese virus en el ganado de la región. Los resultados de este trabajo significan el primer reporte sobre la presencia del CVB asociado al CRB en la región ganadera del noroeste de México y sienta las bases para futuras investigaciones sobre papel que juega este virus en la presentación de la patología del CRB en los sistemas de explotación de bovinos de engorda en nuestra región y el país.

ResumenLa producción agrícola de monocultivo permanente de banano y plátano en la parte media del Río Grande (Turbo - Antioquia) requiere de la aplicación de diferentes plaguicidas. Prácticas inapropiadas en la producción y cultivos de plátano realizadas en esta región a menudo conllevan a contaminación con agroquímicos que llegan a este cuerpo de agua por procesos de lixiviación y escorrentía. Los peces son los vertebrados más utilizados como especies bioindicadoras de la calidad del agua porque son muy sensibles a la presencia de contaminantes en el ambiente. El objetivo de esta investigación fue comparar la frecuencia de eritrocitos micronucleados (EMN) en sangre periférica de ejemplares de peces sabaleta (Brycon henni) procedentes de dos estaciones del Río Grande que difieren en su grado de contaminación por agroquímicos. Se evaluó la frecuencia de EMN en sangre periférica de peces B. henni procedentes de cada estación durante dos épocas de lluvia de 2010 y dos época secas de 2011. Las muestras de sangre fueron obtenidas de la vena caudal, fijadas durante 24 horas y luego teñidas con Giemsa. La frecuencia de EMN fue significativamente mayor en el área impactada por agroquímicos. La frecuencia media de EMN fue mayor en la estación con impacto directo de agroquímicos (0.15±0.18) que en la estación poco alterada (0.06±0.08). Además, la frecuencia de EMN en B. henni fue significativamente mayor en la época seca. Los resultados de este estudio indican que el análisis de las EMN en B. henni puede ser recomendada como un método adecuado para la detección in situ de agentes genotóxicos en el ambiente.

Abstract:The permanent monoculture of bananas and plantains farming in the middle of Río Grande (Turbo - Antioquia) requires the application of a variety of pesticides. Inappropriate banana production practices in this region, have often led to waterbody pollution by agrochemicals from leachate and runoff processes. Currently, fish are the most common vertebrates used as bioindicators of water quality, because they are very sensitive to the presence of contaminants. Our main goal with this study was to compare the frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes (MNE) in peripheral blood specimens of fish Brycon henni, from two locations (polluted and unpolluted) in the Rio Grande. We evaluated the frequency of MNE in peripheral blood samples of fish B. henni from each location during two rainy seasons in 2010 and two dry seasons in 2011. Blood samples were collected, fixed for 24 h, and then were stained with Giemsa. Among results, we found that the median frequency of MNE was higher in the polluted site by agrochemical discharges (0.15±0.18), than in the unimpacted site (0.06±0.08). Furthermore, the frequency of MNE in B. henni during the dry season was highly significant for both locations. The results of this study indicated that the analysis of MNE in B. henni could be recommended as a suitable method for in situ detection of environmental genotoxins. Rev. Biol. Trop. 65 (1): 405-414. Background: Zinc intake is well below recommendation among Chilean free living elderly adults of low socioeconomic level Aim: To assess the effect of the consumption of a food supplement on plasma zinc concentrations in elderly adults (EA). Material and Methods: Ambulatory EA (z70) with controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus or high blood pressure, ascribed to public family health centers were studied. They were separated in a control and intervention group, without blinding techniques. The intervention group consumed daily 50 g of a special nutritional supplement prepared as a soup or porridge, provided by the Government, for 3 months. The control group did not receive the supplement. A good compliance with the supplement was defined as a consumption of 7 portions per week. A fasting venous blood sample was obtained to determine plasma zinc at the beginning and end of the study. Results: Forty three supplemented EA aged 76±5 years (21 women) and 31 non supplemented EA aged 78±5 years (20 women), completed 3 months of follow up. Mean compliance with the supplement was 40.5% (95% confidence intervals (CI) 40.3-40.6%). General characteristics of the study subjects upon recruitment were similar, except for the literacy that was higher in the intervention group. We fitted a multiple linear regression model which explained 39% of the variance, where the consumption of the nutritional supplement increased the concentration ofplasmatic zinc by 4.14 fig/dL (95% CI 0.25-8.02) (p<0.037), after controlling for sex, age, energy, vitamin E and calcium consumption. Conclusions: The consumption of a food supplement significantly increased plasma zinc concentrations in Chilean elderly adults (RevMéd Chile 2007; 135:1015-24)

Objective. To evaluate the access to health services and the process of care provided to children under five years old who died from acute diarrhea (AD). Material and methods. In four states of Mexico, a cross-sectional study was carried out. Deaths from AD that occurred in the lapse of one year were included. Information about clinical characteristics of the illness, process of care and access to the health facilities were obtained through verbal autopsy. Descriptive analysis and comparison of data between rural and urban communities were performed. Results. Five-hundred and fifty three deaths were analyzed. Most of the children were not enrolled in a public care health system. The main children’s characteristics were the following: residence in rural communities; age less than one year; died at home or had short illness duration. Geographic and economic access barriers were identified in rural areas. Oral rehydration salts were provided as a part of household treatment in about 75% of children. 20% of them received non-medical care, specially from traditional healers. Primary medical care was provided to 60% of cases; the drawbacks of the process were related to a high rate of medication prescription, lack or referral to hospital, and lack of recommendation for a new visit in presence of alarm signs. Public physicians and those from rural communities prescribed oral rehydration therapy in a greater proportion. Conclusions. The problem of access to health services in rural communities was confirmed. However, low quality of care provided by primary level physicians was found in both rural and urban areas. We propose the creation of clinical teaching centers to improve the quality of the process of medical care as a strategy to decrease mortality due to AD.

Objetivo. Evaluar el proceso de atención y el acceso a servicios de salud en menores de cinco años fallecidos por enfermedad diarreica (ED), en cuatro estados de la República mexicana. Material y métodos. Se realizó un estudio transversal que incluyó defunciones ocurridas durante un año; mediante autopsia verbal se obtuvo información de características clínicas, atención durante la enfermedad y acceso a los servicios de salud; se realizó un análisis descriptivo y comparativo de acuerdo con el tamaño de la localidad. Resultados. De 553 defunciones, la mayoría ocurrió en niños sin derecho a seguridad social o residentes en localidades rurales; la muerte en el hogar, la edad menor a un año y la corta evolución de la enfermedad caracterizaron a más de la mitad de los casos. Se proporcionó terapia de hidratación oral por decisión de la madre a casi 75% de los niños; 20% recibió atención no médica, principalmente de curanderos. La atención médica fue otorgada en 60% de los casos; a una elevada proporción le fue indicado algún medicamento y no se le envió a hospital ni se recomendó regresar ante la presencia de signos de alarma; la indicación de hidratación oral fue mayor por médicos de servicios públicos y en localidades rurales; en éstas, el acceso geográfico y económico fue menor. Conclusiones. Si bien se confirmó el problema de acceso a los servicios de salud, se identificaron fallas importantes en la atención médica primaria. Se propone la creación de unidades docente-asistenciales como una estrategia para la reducción de la mortalidad por ED.
