The assessment of chlorine, fluorine, and sulfur concentrations in depth profile of drill cuttings was performed using ion chromatography after sample preparation by pyrohydrolysis. The parameters for pyrohydrolysis were optimized using a Box-Behnken design, and the established conditions were 300 mg of sample, 300 mg of V2O5, temperature of 1000 °C, reaction time of 25 min, and absorbing solution of 50 mmol L-1 NH3 + 150 mmol L-1 H2O2. The accuracy was evaluated by the analysis of certified reference materials and recovery tests, and the results showed a good agreement between determined and certified values and recoveries (89-108%). The precision (relative standard deviation (RSD) < 10%), and the limits of detection (0.5-2.5 mg kg 1) were suitable for drill cuttings analysis. The concentration of chlorine, fluorine, and sulfur in drill cuttings at different depths was at mg g-1 range, and its variation is related to the mineral composition of the samples.

ABSTRACT Growth analysis (GA) is used to quantify plant development based on morphophysiological changes. GA is a practical tool to evaluate nursery techniques to make them more efficient. The objective of this essay was to quantity measure morphophysiological growth variables of Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla and Hymenaea courbaril (jatoba) container seedlings to characterize growth stages. The essay was conducted in a shade house located in the western state of Paraná. GA analyses were performed at 10-day intervals on seedlings of both species. When evaluating Hymenaea courbaril seedlings results indicated increased values of height, diameter, root and shoot dry biomass up to 130 days after emergence (DAE). Seedling growth stage-based GA were 70, 100 and 130 DAE for the Eucalyptus hybrid and 50, 80, and 110 DAE for jatoba which presented accelerated, intermediate and reduced seedling growth.

RESUMO A ocorrência de fontes hídricas com elevada concentração de sais se destaca como fator limitante para a produção no Nordeste brasileiro. Assim, é de fundamental importância a busca por estratégias que minimizem o efeito do estresse salino nas culturas. Neste contexto, desenvolveu-se esta pesquisa com o objetivo de avaliar a produção e a qualidade pós-colheita de frutos de mini-melancia Sugar Baby sob diferentes estratégias de manejo de irrigação com água salina e adubação potássica. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 8 × 3, com três repetições, sendo oito estratégias de manejo da irrigação com águas salinas (Sem estresse ao longo do ciclo da cultura; irrigação com água salina na fase vegetativa, vegetativa/floração, floração, floração/frutificação, frutificação, frutificação/maturação e maturação dos frutos) e três doses de potássio (50, 100 e 150% da dose recomendada). A dose de 100% correspondeu a 150 mg K2O kg-1 de solo. Utilizou-se água com baixa e outra com alta condutividade elétrica (0,8 e 4,0 dS m-1, respectivamente). A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 nas fases de floração e maturação dos frutos é uma estratégia promissora para o cultivo de mini-melancia, pois não compromete sua produção. Adubação com 50% da recomendação de K2O pode ser utilizada no cultivo de mini-melancieira sem perda no rendimento. As plantas de mini-melancieira adubadas com 150% da recomendação de K2O e irrigadas com água de elevada concentração de sais nas fases vegetativa/floração de forma continua e frutificação diminuíram os teores de sólidos solúveis e ácido ascórbico nos frutos.

ABSTRACT The occurrence of water sources with a high concentration of salts stands out as a limiting factor for production in Northeast Brazil. Thus, the search for strategies that minimize the effect of salt stress on crops is of fundamental importance. In this context, this study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the production and post-harvest quality of Sugar Baby mini-watermelon fruits under different irrigation management strategies with saline water and potassium fertilization. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using a randomized block design, in an 8 × 3 factorial scheme, with three replicates, corresponding to eight saline water irrigation management strategies (No stress throughout the crop cycle; irrigation with saline water in the vegetative, vegetative/flowering, flowering, flowering/fruiting, fruiting, fruiting/maturation and fruit maturation stages) and three doses of potassium (50, 100 and 150% of the recommended dose). The dose of 100% corresponded to 150 mg K2O kg-1 of soil. Water with low and with high electrical conductivity (0.8 and 4.0 dS m-1, respectively) was used. Irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 in the flowering and fruit maturation stages is a promising strategy for the cultivation of mini-watermelon, as it does not compromise production. Fertilization with 50% of K2O recommendation can be used in the cultivation of mini-watermelon without losses in yield. Mini-watermelon plants fertilized with 150% of K2O recommendation and irrigated with water of high salt concentration continuously in the vegetative/flowering and fruiting stages reduced the contents of soluble solids and ascorbic acid in the fruits.

Abstract The clinical features of COVID-19 differ substantially upon the presence (or absence) of viral pneumonia. The aim of this article was to describe the clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients admitted to the Internal Medicine ward, as divided into those with and without pneumonia. This single-center prospective cohort study was conducted in a tertiary teaching public hospital in Buenos Aires City named Hospital General de Agudos Carlos G. Durand. Baseline data collection was performed within 48 hours of admission and patients were followed until discharge or in-hospital death. Epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and radiological characteristics together with treatment data were obtained from the medical records. Of the 417 included, 243 (58.3%) had pneumonia. Median age was 43 years (IQR:32-57) and 222 (53.2%) were female. The overall crude case-fatality rate was 3.8%. None of the COVID-19 patients without pneumonia developed critical disease, required invasive mechanical ventilation nor died during hospitalization. However, 7 (4%) developed severe disease during follow-up. Among patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, in-hospital mortality rate was 6.6%, severe disease developed in 81 (33.3%), critical disease in 23 (9.5%), and 22 (9.1%) were admitted to the intensive care unit. A largely good prognosis was observed among COVID-19 patients without pneumonia, still, even among this group, unfavorable clinical progression can develop and should be properly monitored. Critical illness among patients with COVID-19 pneumonia was frequent and observed rates from this cohort provide a sound characterization of COVID-19 clinical features in a major city from South America.

Resumen Las características clínicas del COVID-19 difieren sustancialmente según la presencia (o ausencia) de neumonía viral. El objetivo de este artículo fue describir las características clínicas de los pacientes con COVID-19 internados en el servicio de Clínica Médica, divididos en pacientes con y sin neumonía. Fue un estudio de cohorte prospectivo, con base en un único centro, realizado en un hospital público de la ciudad de Buenos Aires: Hospital General de Agudos Carlos G. Durand. La recolección basal de datos se realizó dentro de las 48 horas del ingreso y los pacientes fueron seguidos hasta el alta o la muerte hospitalaria. Las características epidemiológicas, clínicas, de laboratorio y radiológicas junto con los datos del tratamiento se obtuvieron de la historia clínica. De los 417 incluidos, 243 (58.3%) tenían neumonía. La mediana de edad fue de 43 años (RIC: 32-57) y 222 (53.2%) eran mujeres. La tasa global de letalidad fue del 3.8%. Ninguno de los pacientes con COVID-19 sin neumonía desarrolló enfermedad crítica, requirió ventilación mecánica invasiva ni falleció durante la hospitalización. Sin embargo, 7 (4%) desarrollaron enfermedad grave durante el seguimiento. Entre aquellos con neumonía COVID-19, la tasa de mortalidad hospitalaria fue del 6.6%, se desarrolló enfermedad grave en 81 (33.3%), enfermedad crítica en 23 (9.5%) y 22 (9.1%) fueron trasladados a la unidad de cuidados intensivos. Los pacientes con COVID-19 sin neumonía presentaron buen pronóstico; sin embargo, incluso en este grupo, se observaron algunos con progresión clínica desfavorable, por lo que se requirió seguimiento adecuado. En los pacientes con neumonía por COVID-19, el desarrollo de enfermedad crítica fue frecuente y las tasas observadas en esta cohorte proporcionan una caracterización sólida de las características clínicas de los pacientes con COVID-19 en una importante ciudad de América del Sur.

Resumo O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o potencial mutagênico e citotóxico por meio da análise das células da raiz de Allium cepa expostas a amostras de águas de cinco lagoas urbanas de Alta Floresta - MT. As amostras foram obtidas nos períodos da seca, outubro de 2014 e chuvoso, abril de 2015, em 5 pontos distintos, sendo os pontos de coletas, a Lagoa 01, situada na MT 206, Lagoa 02, na Avenida Perimetral Rogério Silva, Lagoa 03, no Setor C, Lagoa 04, na Avenida Teles Pires e Lagoa 05, no Bairro Cidade Bela. Bioensaio com bulbos de Allium cepa foram expostos à água de cada ponto, comparando-se com o controle negativo e positivo. Diante dos resultados obtidos foi possível verificar a presença de atividades mutagênico e citotóxico sobre as raízes de A. cepa, indicando elevado potencial na inibição do ciclo celular. Esse resultado também pode vir a ser decorrente das influências dos períodos sazonais, levando em consideração, que na estação chuvosa, há maior carreamento de substâncias citotóxicas pela água da chuva e na estação seca, uma maior concentração dos poluentes pela redução do volume de água, conduzindo maior interação dos concentrantes como também, maior concentração dos elementos presente na água dessas lagoas.

Abstract This study evaluated genotoxic and cytotoxic potential of water samples through the analysis of Allium cepa root cells exposed to samples from five urban lakes of Alta Floresta, state of Mato Grosso. The samples were obtained in the dry and rainy periods, October 2014 and April 2015, respectively, at five distinct points. The collection points were as follows: Lake 01, located in MT 206; Lake 02, in Avenida Perimetral Rogério Silva; Lake 03, in Sector C; Lake 04 on Teles Pires Avenue; and Lake 05, in the Cidade Bela District. Bioassays using Allium cepa bulbs were taken from the water at each point, and comparisons were made with the negative and positive controls. The results found the presence of genotoxic and cytotoxic activities on the roots of A. cepa, indicating high potential in cell cycle inhibition. This result may also be caused by the influences of seasonal periods, taking into account that in the rainy season there is a greater transport of cytotoxic substances by rainwater, and in the dry season, a higher concentration of pollutants due to the reduction of water volume, resulting in a greater interaction of the concentrators as well as a greater concentration of the elements found in the water of these lagoons.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a relação da diferença entre a capacidade vital lenta (CVL) e CVF (ΔCVL-CVF) com dados demográficos, clínicos e de função pulmonar. Métodos: Estudo analítico, transversal, no qual os participantes responderam a um questionário de saúde respiratória e foram submetidos a espirometria e pletismografia. A amostra foi dividida em dois grupos: ΔCVL-CVF ≥ 200 mL e ΔCVL-CVF < 200 mL. Foram realizadas análises de correlações entre os grupos e de regressão logística binominal. Resultados: Foram selecionados 187 indivíduos. Na amostra total, a média da ΔCVL-CVF foi de 0,17 ± 0,14 L. Na amostra, 61 indivíduos (32,62%) apresentaram ΔCVL-CVF ≥ 200 mL. O uso da manobra expiratória lenta reduziu a prevalência de distúrbio ventilatório inespecífico e resultados espirométricos normais, ao revelar distúrbio ventilatório obstrutivo (DVO). DVO e achados de aprisionamento aéreo (capacidade residual funcional elevada e capacidade inspiratória/CPT reduzida) foram preditores de ΔCVL-CVF ≥ 200 mL no modelo final da regressão logística (ajustada para peso e índice de massa corpórea > 30 kg/m2). Foi observada maior chance de resposta ao broncodilatador no grupo ΔCVL-CVF ≥ 200 mL: VEF1 (OR = 4,38; IC95%: 1,45-13,26) e CVF (OR = 3,83; IC95%: 1,26-11,71). Conclusões: O uso da manobra expiratória lenta diminuiu a prevalência de distúrbio ventilatório inespecífico e de resultados espirométricos normais, podendo a ΔCVL-CVF ≥ 200 mL ser resultado de DVO e aprisionamento aéreo, tendo maior chance de resposta ao broncodilatador.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the relationship that the difference between slow vital capacity (SVC) and FVC (ΔSVC-FVC) has with demographic, clinical, and pulmonary function data. Methods: This was an analytical cross-sectional study in which participants completed a respiratory health questionnaire, as well as undergoing spirometry and plethysmography. The sample was divided into two groups: ΔSVC-FVC ≥ 200 mL and ΔSVC-FVC < 200 mL. The intergroup correlations were analyzed, and binomial logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: The sample comprised 187 individuals. In the sample as a whole, the mean ΔSVC-FVC was 0.17 ± 0.14 L, and 61 individuals (32.62%) had a ΔSVC-FVC ≥ 200 mL. The use of an SVC maneuver reduced the prevalence of nonspecific lung disease and of normal spirometry results by revealing obstructive lung disease (OLD). In the final logistic regression model (adjusted for weight and body mass index > 30 kg/m2), OLD and findings of air trapping (high functional residual capacity and a low inspiratory capacity/TLC ratio) were predictors of a ΔSVC-FVC ≥ 200 mL. The chance of a bronchodilator response was found to be greater in the ΔSVC-FVC ≥ 200 mL group: for FEV1 (OR = 4.38; 95% CI: 1.45-13.26); and for FVC (OR = 3.83; 95% CI: 1.26-11.71). Conclusions: The use of an SVC maneuver appears to decrease the prevalence of nonspecific lung disease and of normal spirometry results. Individuals with a ΔSVC-FVC ≥ 200 mL, which is probably the result of OLD and air trapping, are apparently more likely to respond to bronchodilator administration.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of doses of nitrogen fertilizer in association with types of basal dressing fertilizers on the physiological characteristics of beet cultivar Early Wonder in a protected environment. The experiment was conducted in safe environment at the Federal University of Campina Grande, using a randomized block design with three replications and a 5x3 factorial scheme, in five doses of nitrogen (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg dm-3) applied through fertigation, and three types of basal dressing fertilizers (unfertilized soil, earthworm humus and earthworm humus + NPK). At 45 and 90 days after transplanting (DAT), it was determined the chlorophylls a, b, total chlorophylls, carotenoids and SPAD index. Organo-mineral fertilizer (earthworm humus + NPK) provides greater efficiency for the photosynthetic pigments when compared with organic fertilizer (earthworm humus) and without fertilization (control).The increase of nitrogen dose up to 200 mg dm-3 is the one which contributes most to the increment of chloroplastid pigments. Nutrients were absorbed by the plants and the humus and humus + NPK treatments supplied the nutritional demands during the beet cultivation cycle.

RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou avaliar os teores dos macronutrientes (NPK e S) e o crescimento do milho ‘Potiguar’ fertigado com urina humana, manipueira e suas associações com NPK. O experimento foi instalado em casa de vegetação localizada no Campus I da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande. Utilizou-se delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, composto por oito tratamentos, correspondentes a fertigação com fertilizante mineral na fórmula de NPK; orgânica composta por urina humana, manipueira e água amarela associada à manipueira; organonomineral composta por urina humana adicionada de fósforo e potássio, manipueira mais nitrogênio e fósforo e urina humana associada à manipueira mais fósforo, com cinco repetições. Aos 50 dias após a semeadura (DAS) foram avaliados os teores foliares de NPK e S e as variáveis de crescimento: número de folhas, altura de planta, diâmetro caulinar, área foliar, massa fresca e seca das folhas, massa do caule e da parte aérea. Os teores de N e P, e as variáveis de crescimento: número de folhas, altura de planta, massa fresca e seca das folhas, massa do caule e da parte aérea foram influenciados pela fertigação com urina humana, manipueira e suas associações com NPK. Nas folhas do milho ‘Potiguar’ os teores acumulados de N, P, K e S, aos 50 DAS, variaram na sequência N > K > P > S. A urina humana tem potencial como fonte de N na fertigação do milho e a manipueira pode ser utilizada se associada a outras fontes de nutrientes.

A completely randomized experimental design was used, consisting of eight treatments, corresponding to fertigation with mineral fertilizer NPK formula; organic, composed of yellow water, cassava wastewater and human urine associated with cassava wastewater; organomineral, composed of human urine associated with phosphorus and potassium, cassava wastewater associated with nitrogen and phosphorus and human urine associated with cassava wastewater and phosphorus, with five repetitions. At 50 days after sowing (DAS), plants were evaluated for the leaf NPK and S concentrations and growth variables: number of leaves, plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, fresh and dry mass of leaves, mass of stem and shoots. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations and the growth variables number of leaves, plant height, fresh and dry mass of leaves, mass of stem and of shoot were influenced by fertigation with human urine, cassava wastewater concentrations and their associations with NPK. In the leaves of corn cultivar Potiguar the accumulated concentrations of N, P and K, at 50 DAS, varied in the sequence N > K > P. Human urine has potential as source of N in fertigation of corn and cassava wastewater can be used if associated with other sources of nutrients.

Esta pesquisa objetivou avaliar a produção de milho Potiguar fertirrigado com urina humana e manipueira associadas à adubação mineral com NPK. Adotou-se delineamento inteiramente casualizados, composto por oito tratamentos (1 - testemunha sem fertirrigação; 2 - fertirrigações com NPK; 3 - apenas urina humana; 4 - apenas manipueira; 5 - urina humana mais manipueira; 6 - urina humana mais PK; 7 - manipueira mais NP; e 8 - urina humana, manipueira e P) e cinco repetições. Aos 110 dias após emergência foram avaliados comprimento e diâmetro da espiga, número de grão por espiga, fileiras de grãos por espigas, grãos por fileira, massa seca da parte aérea, massa seca da espiga com e sem palha, massa seca dos grãos e massa seca de 100 grãos. Com exceção da massa seca de 100 grãos, houve diferença estatística significativa entre tratamentos e entre médias analisadas. Urina humana pode substituir a adubação nitrogenada e a manipueira a potássica aplicada via fertirrigação na cultura do milho. A associação destes efluentes tem potencial para substituir a adubação mineral requerida pela cultura do milho. Com exceção dos tratamentos 1 e 4, os demais podem ser indicados como os melhores tratamentos.

This research aimed to evaluate the production of Potiguar maize fertirrigated with human urine and, cassava wastewater associated with mineral fertilization with NPK. A completely randomized design was used, consisting of eight treatments (1 - control without fertigation, 2 - fertigations with NPK, 3 - only human urine, 4 - only cassava wastewater, 5 - cassava wastewater plus human urine, 6 - human urine plus PK; - cassava wastewater plus NP, and 8 - human urine, cassava wastewater and P) and five replicates. At 110 days after emergence were evaluated the length and diameter of the spike, number of grain per spike, rows of grain per spike, grain per row, dry mass of the aerial part, dry mass of the spike with and without straw, dry mass of the grains and mass dry of 100 grains. Except for the dry matter of 100 grains, there was a statistically significant difference between treatments and between analyzed means. Human urine can substitute the nitrogen fertilization and the cassava wastewater applied via fertirrigation substitute the potassium in the maize crop. The association of these effluents has the potential to replace the mineral fertilization required by the maize crop. With the exception of treatments 1 and 4, the others can be indicated as the best treatments.

RESUMO A salinidade da água e do solo reduz o crescimento e a produção de culturas, em especial às fruteiras, como o mamoeiro, sendo necessário obter alternativas de manejo que viabilizem o cultivo sob tais condições. Assim, objetivou-se, com este estudo, avaliar o crescimento e fitomassa do mamoeiro cultivado sob irrigação com águas salinizadas e adubação orgânica. Usou-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, com os tratamentos distribuídos em esquema fatorial, 5 x 2, constituídos de cinco níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0,6; 1,2; 1,8; 2,4 e 3,0 dS m-1) e dois níveis de adubação orgânica (10 e 20 L de esterco bovino por planta), com três repetições, totalizando trinta parcelas experimentais. Foram avaliadas variáveis de crescimento do mamoeiro. As plantas de mamoeiro foram afetadas negativamente pela salinidade da água de irrigação, com maior efeito no número de folhas e na massa seca das folhas, não havendo efeito dos níveis de esterco bovino.

ABSTRACT The salinity of water and soil reduces the growth and production of crops, especially the fruit trees, such as papaya. Thus, it is necessary to obtain management alternatives for cultivation under these conditions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and phytomass of papaya cultivated under irrigation with saline water and organic fertilization. An experiment was set up using a randomized block design, with the treatments distributed in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, consisting of five levels of salinity of irrigation water (0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4 and 3.0 dS m-1) and two levels of organic fertilization (10 and 20 L of bovine manure per plant), with three replications, totaling thirty experimental plots. Growth variables of papaya were evaluated. Papaya plants were negatively affected by irrigation water salinity, with a greater effect on the number of leaves and on dry phytomass of leaves, with no effect of bovine manure levels.

RESUMO: O estudo objetivou verificar a ocorrência de Leishmania spp. e Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum em cavalos de uma região endêmica para leishmaniose visceral do Brasil. Amostras de DNA de sangue e suabe conjuntival (SC) foram testadas pela PCR e pela Reação de Imunofluorescência Indireta (RIFI). Embora nenhum cavalo estivesse clinicamente doente, animais infectados por Leishmania spp. e L. (L.) infantum foram encontrados em Ilha Solteira/SP. Dos 40 cavalos, 100% (40/40) foram positivos pela PCR de sangue, 90% (36/40) pela PCR de SC, e 2,5% (01/40) no sorodiagnóstico, pela RIFI. Seis desses 40 cavalos foram positivos para L. (L.) infantum pela PCR de sangue. O sequenciamento direto e a análise dos amplicons resultaram em uma sequência para análise evolutiva. Os resultados indicam a presença de Leishmania spp. e L. (L.) infantum infectando cavalos saudáveis no Brasil. A presença de DNA de Leishmania spp. and L. (L.) infantum em cavalos saudáveis sugere que eles podem ser importantes reservatórios desses parasitas, um achado altamente relevante para a vigilância epidemiológica das doenças que causam.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to verify the occurrence of Leishmania spp. and Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum in horses from a visceral leishmaniasis endemic area in Brazil. DNA samples from blood and conjunctival swab (CS) were tested by PCR and Indirect Immunofluorescence Antibody Test (IFAT). Although none of the horses was clinically sick, animals infected by Leishmania spp. were found and some could be characterized as infected by L. (L.) infantum. From 40 horses, 100% of the animals were positive by blood PCR, 90% (36/40) by CS PCR, and 2.5% (01/40) in serodiagnosis, by IFAT. Six from these 40 horses were L. (L.) infantum positive by blood PCR. Direct sequencing and analysis of amplicons resulted in a sequence to evolutionary analysis. Results indicate the presence of Leishmania spp. and L. (L.) infantum infecting healthy horses in Brazil. The presence of Leishmania spp. and L. (L.) infantum DNA in asymptomatic horses suggests that they can be important reservoirs of these parasites, a highly relevant finding for the epidemiological surveillance of the diseases they cause.

ABSTRACT Cryptococcal meningitis is the most common cause of opportunistic meningitis in HIV-infected patients in Brazil and causes unacceptable high mortality rates. In this study, HIV-infected patients with a first episode of culture-proven cryptococcal meningitis in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were prospectively included in order to evaluate sensitivity of cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) lateral flow assay (LFA) in serum, CSF, whole blood (fingerstick), and fresh urine. In addition, HIV-infected patients with other neurological confirmed diseases were included in order to evaluate the specificity of CrAg LFA in serum. Twenty patients with cryptococcal meningitis were included and in 19 of them, CrAg LFA in CSF, serum, and whole blood were positive (95% sensitivity). In 18 patients, India ink test was positive in CSF (90% sensitivity), and in 16 cases, CrAg LFA was positive in urine (80% sensitivity). Thirty-six HIV-infected patients with other neurological diseases had negative results of CrAg LFA in serum (100% specificity). In conclusion, CrAg LFA in serum, CSF, and whole blood showed high sensitivity and specificity. Whole blood CrAg LFA seems to be a good and reliable strategy to improve AIDS-related cryptococcal meningitis diagnosis in Brazil.

ABSTRACT Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão, Anacardiaceae, is a medicinal plant widely found in Brazil, especially in the northern region. In our previous study, the ethanolic extract from leaves of M. urundeuva showed antiviral activity against simian rotavirus SA-11. Here, the crude extract was subjected to fractionations in order to subsequently work with more concentrated and pure bioactive compounds, which were analyzed by TLC and HPLC methods to support a better understanding of their virucidal effect. The antiviral activity was evaluated using a rotavirus infection model in MA-104 cells treated with the maximum non-cytotoxic concentration of the crude extract and its fractions. Data were expressed as the percentage inhibition of viral replication calculated by the inhibition of cytopathic effect in the treated cells compared to untreated controls after 48 h of incubation. First, we conducted a fractionation, generating five fractions (F1–F5) which were submitted to antiviral assay. Then, the fraction that showed the highest virucidal effect (F3, PI = 75%) was subjected to a larger partition, yielding eighteen subfractions, which were submitted to new antiviral assays. Terpenes, flavonoids and tannins were the major secondary metabolites detected by TLC analysis in F3. SF1, a flavonoid-enriched fraction, showed the strongest in vitro activity against rotavirus (PI = 92%), preventing cytopathic effect. Chromatographic profiles were obtained by HPLC for the crude extract and SF1, the most potent subfraction. Overall, our data point to the potential anti-rotavirus activity of flavonoid-enriched fraction (SF1) of M. urundeuva leaves, corroborating the traditional use of this species to treat diarrhea and broadening our perspectives on in vivo assays in mice with SF1 isolated or associated with other fractions.

RESUMO Aldama arenaria e A. robusta são espécies aromáticas morfologicamente semelhantes e que apresentam desenvolvimento sazonal. O rendimento e a composição química dos óleos essenciais dos órgãos vegetativos aéreos e subterrâneos dessas espécies foram caracterizados e comparados, a fim de verificar a produção dos metabólitos voláteis nas fases de floração e dormência e, ainda, para tentar identificar compostos exclusivos para cada espécie. O composto majoritário no óleo essencial das folhas de A. arenaria foi o palustrol (16,22%) e para os caules aéreos o limoneno (15,3%), enquanto que limoneno (11,16%) e α-pineno (19,64%) foram os majoritários para o óleo das folhas e caules aéreos de A. robusta, respectivamente. O composto majoritário nos óleos essenciais do sistema subterrâneos foi α-pineno em ambas as espécies e fases fenológicas. Grandes quantidades de diterpenos foram encontradas especialmente nos óleos essenciais de A. arenaria. Diversos compostos foram únicos para cada uma das espécies analisadas. Este estudo caracterizou o rendimento e a composição química do óleo essencial de A. arenaria e A. robusta, espécies que possuem potencial medicinal. A comparação entre as fases de floração e dormência pode indicar a melhor época para obter os óleos essenciais, considerando o composto alvo em futuros estudos farmacológicos. Além disso, alguns dos compostos identificados foram exclusivos para cada uma delas, fornecendo um perfil químico único para cada espécie, o que pode ajudar na solução de problemas taxonômicos.

ABSTRACT Aldama arenaria and A. robusta are morphologically similar aromatic species that have seasonal development. The yield and chemical composition of essential oils from aerial and underground vegetative organs of these species were compared to verify the production of volatile metabolites in flowering and dormant phases of development and to identify if there are unique compounds for either species. The major compound in the essential oils from A. arenaria leaves was palustrol (16.22%) and for aerial stems was limonene (15.3%), whereas limonene (11.16%) and α-pinene (19.64%) were the major compounds for leaves and aerial stems from A. robusta, respectively. The major compound for the underground organs was α-pinene, in both species and phenological stages. High amounts of diterpenes were found especially for A. arenaria essential oils. Each analyzed species presented unique compounds, which can provide a characteristic chemical profile for both species helping to solve their taxonomic problems. This study characterized for the first time the yield and essential oil composition of A. arenaria and A. robusta, which have medicinal potential, and some of the compounds in their essential oils are unique to each one and may be useful in helping the correct identification of them.

A fast, simple and reliable method for Hg determination in green coke and oily sludge samples by atomic fluorescence spectrometry is described. Microwave digestion and extraction procedures were evaluated for highly complex samples of coke and oily sludge. The concentrations of SnCl2 and HCl to promote Hg vapor, were optimized, as well as the concentration of KMnO4, to stabilize the Hg2+ before the atomic vapor formation. Accuracy of the method was evaluated through certified reference material, for green coke, and comparison with cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CV AAS), for oily sludge. Recovery tests were also performed. Limits of detection and quantification were 0.8 and 2.6 µg kg−1, respectively. Ten green coke and nine sludge samples were analysed and Hg concentrations in coke are very low, between 0.005 and 0.065 mg kg−1, but oily sludge samples have high concentrations, ranging from 42.5 to 376.6 mg kg−1, requiring careful management.
