Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an elastomeric urethane monomer (Exothane-24) in different concentrations on physicochemical properties, gap formation, and polymerization shrinkage stress of experimental resin composites. All experimental composites were prepared with 50 wt.% of Bis-GMA and 50 wt.% of TEGDMA, to which 0 wt.% (control), 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, 30 wt.%, and 40 wt.% of Exothane-24 were added. Filler particles (65 wt.%) were then added to these resin matrixes. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS: n = 10), flexural strength (FS: n = 10), flexural modulus (FM: n = 10), hardness (H: n = 10), hardness reduction (HR: n = 10), degree of conversion (DC: n = 5), gap width (GW: n = 10), and polymerization shrinkage stress in Class I (SS-I: n = 10) and Class II (SS-II: n = 10) simulated configuration. All test data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α = 0.05; β= 0.2). Exothane-24 in all concentrations decreased the H, HR, DC, GW, SS-I, and SS-II (p < 0.05) without affecting the UTS, and FS (p > 0.05). Reduction in FM was observed only in the Exothane 40% and 30% groups compared to the control (p < 0.05). Exothane-24 at concentrations 20% and 30% seems suitable since it reduced GW and polymerization SS without affecting the properties of the composite resins tested, except for H.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de um monômero elastomérico de uretano (Exothane-24) em diferentes concentrações em propriedades físico-químicas, formação de fenda e tensão de contração de polimerização de resinas compostas experimentais. Todos os compósitos experimentais foram preparados com 50% em peso de Bis-GMA e 50% em peso de TEGDMA, nos quais 0% (controle), 10%, 20%, 30% e 40% em peso de Exothane-24 foram adicionados. Partículas de carga (65% em peso) foram então adicionadas as matrizes resinosas. Resistência coesiva (RC: n = 10), resistência à flexão (RF: n = 10), módulo de flexão (MF: n = 10), dureza (D: n = 10), redução de dureza (RD: n = 10), grau de conversão (GC: n = 5), largura de fenda (LF: n = 10) e tensão de contração de polimerização em simulações de cavidades Classe I (TC-I: n = 10) e Classe II (TC-II: n = 10). Todos os dados do teste foram analisados usando one-way ANOVA e teste de Tukey (α = 0,05; β = 0,2). O Exothane-24 em todas as concentrações diminuiu a D, RD, GC, LF, TC-I e TC-II (p < 0,05) sem afetar o RC e RF (p > 0,05). A redução da MF foi observada apenas nos grupos Exothane 40% e 30% em relação ao controle (p < 0,05). O Exothane-24 nas concentrações de 20% e 30% pareceu ser adequado, pois reduziu LF e TC de polimerização sem afetar as propriedades das resinas compostas testadas, exceto para D.

ABSTRACT Tomato fruits are highly perishable. In this sense, adopting techniques to maintain and extend its shelf life is essential. Recent studies have used microalgae as an edible coating for fruit, as it is a nutrient-rich alternative and reduces fruit mass loss and respiration, delaying senescence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of microalgae-based coatings with or without the use of modified atmosphere packaging, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), in post-harvest tomato conservation. The design used was completely randomized, in a 4x2 factorial arrangement, with four coatings (no coating, coating composed of Spirulina platensis sp., Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus sp.) and two conditions (with and without PVC), totalizing 8 treatments, with four replicates, consisting of one fruit each. Stored for 7 days at 10±2ºC and 55±5% UR and evaluated at harvest and on the last day of storage. The fruits coated with Chlorella sp. without PVC and Scenedesmus sp. associated with PVC, showed the lowest mass losses, representing a reduction of 73.79% and 78.47%, respectively, in relation to the control. In addition to mass loss, the levels of ascorbic acid (18.91 and 16.97 mg/100 g), citric acid (4.02 and 4.01), respectively, and the SS/AT ratio also stood out. The microalgae Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus sp. can be used in coating ‘Santa Clara’ tomato fruits to maintain their physicochemical characteristics over 7 days of storage. The use of PVC film coating helped maintain these characteristics, reducing the perishability of the fruits.

RESUMO Os frutos do tomateiro têm alta perecibilidade havendo a necessidade da adoção de técnicas que mantenham e prolonguem sua vida útil pós-colheita. Estudos recentes têm utilizado microalgas como recobrimento comestível em frutos, por ser uma alternativa rica em nutrientes e reduzir perda de massa e respiração do fruto e assim retardar a senescência. Objetivou-se avaliar a aplicação de revestimentos a base de microalgas com ou sem o uso de embalagem com atmosfera modificada (policloreto de vinila) na conservação pós-colheita de tomate. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 4x2, com quatro revestimentos (sem revestimento, revestimento com Spirulina platensis sp., Chlorella sp. e Scenedesmus sp.) e duas condições [com e sem PVC (policloreto de vinila)], totalizando 8 tratamentos, com quatro repetições, constituída por um fruto cada. Armazenados por 7 dias a 10±2ºC e 55±5% UR e avaliados na colheita e no último dia de armazenamento. Os frutos recobertos com Chlorella sp. sem o PVC e Scenedesmus sp. associado ao PVC, tiveram as menores perdas de massa, representando redução de 73,79% e 78,47%, respectivamente, em relação ao controle. Além da perda de massa, também tiveram destaque nos teores de ácido ascórbico (18,91 e 16,97 mg/100 g). As microalgas Chlorella sp. e Scenedesmus sp. podem ser utilizadas no revestimento de frutos do tomateiro ‘Santa Clara’ para manter suas características físico-químicas ao longo de 7 dias de armazenamento. A utilização do recobrimento com filme PVC auxilia na manutenção dessas características, diminuindo a taxa de perecibilidade dos frutos.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the levels of heavy metals in the soil and castor bean plant after fertilization with sewage sludge (SS) subjected to different stabilization processes. The study was conducted in a Haplic Cambisol with the following treatments: control (CO), fertilization with solarized sewage sludge (SSS), composted sewage sludge (CSS), vermi composted sewage sludge (VSS), limed sewage sludge (LSS), and mineral fertilizer (MF). The experimental design included a subdivided plot scheme with fertilization being the primary factor and soil layers or leaf parts being the secondary factor. The data obtained were analyzed using analysis of variance and the Scott-Knott test with 5% significance. Fertilization with SSS, CSS, and LSS led to the highest increase in Zn in the soil, mainly in the surface layer. In the leaf tissues, Zn and Cu levels were higher with the CO and SSS treatments, whereas the Ni level was higher with SSS, CSS, VSS, and MF treatments. In general, Zn and Cu levels were higher in the leaf limb than in the petiole, whereas Ni, Pb, and Cr levels were higher in the petiole than in the leaf limb. In any case, no symptoms of toxicity in the plants and no risk of soil contamination were observed with any of the fertilization treatments.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os teores de metais pesados no solo e na planta de mamoneira em resposta à adubação com lodo de esgoto (LE) submetido a diferentes processos de estabilização. O experimento foi desenvolvido em Cambissolo Háplico com os tratamentos: testemunha, adubação com LE solarizado, LE compostado, LE vermicompostado, LE caleado e adubação mineral. O delineamento experimental foi em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, sendo as adubações o fator primário e as camadas do solo ou as partes da folha o fator secundário. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de variância e teste de Scott-Knott a 5% de probabilidade. No solo, as adubações com LE solarizado, compostado e caleado promoveram os maiores incrementos dos teores de Zn, principalmente na camada superficial. No tecido foliar, os teores de Zn e Cu foram mais elevados na testemunha e no LE solarizado, enquanto o Ni foi mais elevado nos LE solarizado, compostado, vermicompostado e na adubação mineral. De modo geral, os maiores teores de Zn e Cu ocorreram no limbo foliar em comparação ao pecíolo, enquanto os teores de Ni, Pb e Cr foram mais elevados no pecíolo do que no limbo foliar. Contudo, não foram constatados sintomas de toxidez nas plantas e nenhum risco de contaminação do solo com os diferentes tipos de adubações realizadas.

Abstract Musculoskeletal symptoms (MS) can derive from injuries or dysfunctions that affect biological tissues such as muscles, bones, and nerves, among others. Military Firefighters (MF) exercise their activities exposed to varied and complex biological conditions, in which the physical demands are intense. Shift work is another remarkable characteristic of the career, which is associated with sleep disorders. Our objective was to estimate the association between the risk of chronification of MS and sleep quality in MF with MS. Our study is a Cross-Sectional Observational Study, whose sample was composed of 753 BM from the Federal District. The analysis was performed with a Sample Characterization Questionnaire, Örebro Musculoskeletal Symptoms Screening Questionnaire (OMPSQ) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), answered remotely. Statistical analysis used the Spearman Correlation test, p<0.05. The correlation between OMPSQ and PSQI was rated moderate, demonstrating that sleep quality has an influence on the chronification process. The average of the evaluation of Sleep Quality through the PSQI is 8.79, indicating that military personnel present a deficient quality of sleep. There was a correlation between the PSQI score and the OMPSQ of 0.542 (p<0.001), a moderate correlation between the variables. We conclude that MF show correlation between SM and sleep quality, indicating a moderate relationship between the variables, where sleep quality explains 25% of SM. We found that most MF were classified as Low Risk for chronification of SM.

Resumo Os sintomas musculoesqueléticos (SM) podem derivar de lesões ou disfunções que afetam tecidos biológicos como músculos, ossos, nervos, entre outros. Os Bombeiros Militares (BM) exercem suas atividades expostos a condições biológicas variadas e complexas, nas quais as demandas físicas são intensas. O trabalho em turno é outra característica marcante na carreira, o qual está associado a distúrbios do sono. Nosso objetivo foi estimar a associação entre o risco de cronificação de SM e a qualidade do sono em BM com SM. Nosso estudo é um Estudo Observacional Transversal, cuja amostra foi composta por 753 BM do Distrito Federal. A análise foi realizada com um Questionário de Caracterização Amostral, Questionário Örebro de Triagem de Sintomas Musculoesqueléticos (OMPSQ) e com o Índice de Qualidade do Sono de Pittsburgh (PSQI), respondidos remotamente. A análise estatística utilizou o teste de Correlação Spearman, p<0,05. A correlação entre OMPSQ e PSQI foi classificada em moderada, demonstrando que a qualidade do sono apresenta influência no processo de cronificação. A média da avaliação da Qualidade do Sono através do PSQI é de 8,79, indicando que militares apresentam uma qualidade do sono deficitária. Houve correlação entre a pontuação no PSQI e o OMPSQ de 0,542 (p<0.001), correlação moderada entre as variáveis. Concluímos que os BM apresentam correlação entre os SM e a qualidade do sono, indicando uma relação moderada entre as variáveis, onde a qualidade de sono explica 25% dos SM. Verificamos que a maioria dos BM foram classificados como Baixo Risco de cronificação de SM.

Resumo O objetivo foi investigar o efeito do inibidor de polimerização BHT no grau de conversão (GC), resistência à flexão (RF), módulo de flexão (MF), microdureza Knoop (KH) e redução da microdureza (RKH), e consistência de um compósito experimental contendo diferentes concentrações de BHT (% em peso): C0 - controle (0%); C0,01 (0,01%); C0,025 (0,025%); C0,05 (0,05%); C0,1 (0,1%); e C0,5 (0,5%). Para o teste de consistência, os compósitos foram testados imediatamente após serem expostos à luz de um refletor odontológico por 0, 20, 40 e 60 s. Os dados relativos a GC, RF, MF, KH e RKH foram submetidos a one-way ANOVA, enquanto os dados de consistência foram submetidos a two-way ANOVA; os valores médios foram comparados (teste de Tukey; α = 0,05). As análises de KH, RF e MF não mostraram diferença significativa entre os compósitos testados. Para GC, C0 apresentou o maior valor médio e diferiu apenas de C0,5. Para a RKH, C0,5 apresentou o menor valor médio e diferiu de C0 e C0,01. A análise de consistência não mostrou diferença entre C0,05, C0,1 e C0,5, considerando-se 0 e 20 s de exposição à luz, enquanto C0, C0,01 e C0,025 apresentaram maiores valores médios a 0 s quando comparados a 20 s. A polimerização ocorreu dentro de 40 s de exposição à luz para C0, C0.01, C0.025 e C0.05 e dentro de 60 s para C0.1. Em conclusão, as concentrações de BHT não tiveram influência significativa sobre RF, MF e KH. Quanto maior a concentração de BHT, maior o tempo de manuseio sob luz, com melhora significativa da RKH, mas diminuição da GC. Portanto, o compósito contendo 0,1 % de BHT apresentou os melhores resultados entre as demais concentrações testadas.

Abstract This study investigated the effect of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) inhibitor on degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), Knoop microhardness (KH), microhardness reduction (HR), and consistency of experimental resin composites at different BHT concentrations: C0 (control-0%); C0.01 (0.01%); C0.025 (0.025%); C0.05 (0.05%); C0.1 (0.1%); and C0.5 (0.5%). For the consistency, the composites were tested immediately after being exposed to a dental chair headlight (0, 20, 40 and 60 s). Data concerning DC, FS, FM, KH, and HR were submitted to one-way ANOVA, while the consistency data was submitted to 2-way ANOVA; mean values were then compared (Tukey’s test; α=0.05). The KH, FS and FM analyses showed no significant difference among the composites tested. For DC, C0 showed the highest mean value (74.2%) and differed only from C0.5 (67.2%). For HR, C0.5 showed the lowest mean (13.09%) value and differed from C0 (26.4%) and C0.01 (24.87). The consistency analysis showed no difference among C0.05, C0.1 and C0.5, considering 0 and 20 s of light exposure, while C0 (14.07 mm), C0.01 (13.97 mm), and C0.025 (14.18 mm) showed higher mean values at 0 s when compared to 20 s (12.67, 12.77 and 13.05 mm, respectivelly). Polymerization occurred within 40 s of light exposure for C0, C0.01, C0.025, and C0.05 and within 60 s for C0.1. In conclusion, the BHT concentrations had no significant influence on FS, FM and KH. The higher the BHT concentration, the longer was its handling time under light, with a significant improvement in the HR, but a decrease in DC. Therefore, BHT at 0.1% showed the best outcomes concerning all the BHT concentrations tested.

Abstract Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) has been studied as a model microorganism to understand the mechanism of glutathione (GSH) production. Furthermore, magnetic field (MF) application is a novel approach to stimulate microorganism metabolism to increase growth and produce more biomolecules. This study aimed to evaluate whether GSH production by S. cerevisiae ATCC 7754 would be affected by different pressure levels and MF application in an airlift bioreactor. Influence of pressure (0.0 - 0.15 MPa), medium recycle velocity (3.0 and 15.0 cm s-1) and MF application (0.0 and 3.0 mT) was evaluated. Biomass and GSH concentrations at high pressure and medium recycle velocity were higher than the ones in the control, whereas MF decreased biomass and GSH concentrations. The best results of biomass concentration and GSH production were 17.79 g L-1 and 162.92 mg L-1, respectively. at 0.05 MPa, 15.0 cm s- 1 and without any MF application. Results of the pressured airlift bioreactor showed that this kind of reactor may be used for producing GSH and for reducing energy costs.

Abstract Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe disease with no cure caused by a genetic abnormality, promoting progressive muscle degeneration. Corticosteroids are used drugs in treatment associated with adverse effects. The extract of Miconia ferruginata (Melastomataceae) (MF) has demonstrated potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential in vitro. This study used a DMD model (mdx) to determine the toxic dose of this plant and found a possible non-toxic dose with therapeutic effects. The mdx groups received an intraperitoneal injection of 0 (control group), 50, 100, 200, 300, and 2000 mg kg-1 of the aqueous leaf extract following a single-dose acute toxicity protocol and were observed for 14 days. The range of toxicity of the extract and LD50 were determined. Histopathological analysis, the quantification of fibrosis, and immunohistochemical analysis of the tissues were performed. The results demonstrated that 2000 mg kg-1 was highly toxic, inducing histopathological changes in the tissues evaluated, with 100% mortality in 48 hours. The other doses caused no behavioral changes or signs of toxicity. The MF extract led reduction in histopathological changes, fibrosis, and inflammation, a reduction in HSP70 and an increase in MCL-1 proteins. Doses of 50-200 mg kg-1 demonstrated regenerative tissue and anti-inflammatory potential.

Resumo Introdução: A cefaleia é uma queixa frequente, não sendo raros os casos de automedicação. Este artigo relata a abordagem da cefaleia por uso excessivo de medicamentos (CUEM) numa doente automedicada com analgésicos, cuja intervenção foi dificultada pela má adesão ao acompanhamento médico. Descrição do Caso: Mulher de 41 anos, empregada de limpeza. Antecedentes de enxaqueca desde a adolescência, agravada depois do segundo parto, com episódios semanais, sem alívio após tentativa de vários fármacos. Em 2015, após referenciação para consulta de neurologia, iniciou profilaxia com amitriptilina, tendo suspendido precocemente e abandonado o seguimento. Nos três anos seguintes teve consultas motivadas por doença aguda na unidade de saúde familiar, sem acompanhamento regular. Por persistência da enxaqueca recorreu ao serviço de urgência em jan/2018, onde foi referenciada novamente à consulta de neurologia, constatando-se automedicação com paracetamol + codeína, vinte supositórios em cada episódio de enxaqueca (com duração de três dias). Iniciou profilaxia com topiramato e agendou-se nova consulta. Suspendeu topiramato por emagrecimento e faltou à consulta. Recorreu à consulta da médica de família (MF) em jan/2019, referindo tristeza, insónia, obstipação e emagrecimento. Mantinha os episódios semanais de enxaqueca e o uso de supositórios. Após despiste de causa orgânica diagnosticou-se perturbação depressiva e CUEM. Explicou-se que o abuso medicamentoso poderia causar cefaleia e que o tratamento passaria pela cessação do fármaco. Foi medicada com antidepressivos e, nas consultas de reavaliação, constatou-se recuperação ponderal, melhoria do humor, cefaleia menos frequente e redução do uso de supositórios até à abstinência. Comentário: A CUEM desenvolve-se pelo uso excessivo de medicação para a cefaleia, sendo a suspensão da medicação o único tratamento eficaz. A doente manteve uma situação de abuso medicamentoso durante oito meses, tendo como consequência uma CUEM e correndo risco de toxicidade hepática. O MF é fulcral na deteção e abordagem precoce do abuso medicamentoso.

Abstract Introduction: Headache is a common complaint and self-medication is not uncommon. This article reports the approach to medication overuse headache (MOH) in a patient who self-medicated with analgesics, whose intervention was hampered by poor adherence to medical follow-up. Case Description: 41-year-old woman, cleaning employee. History of migraine since adolescence, which worsened after her second delivery, presenting with weekly episodes without relief after several treatments were prescribed. In 2015, after referral to a Neurology consultation, she started prophylaxis with amitriptyline, which she suspended, missing the follow-up appointment. In the three years that followed, she only attended primary care consultations motivated by acute illness, without regular appointments. On Jan/2018, she went to the emergency department due to persistent migraine, and again she was referred to a Neurology consultation, where it was detected that she self-medicated with over twenty suppositories of paracetamol + codeine in each episode of migraine. Topiramate was prescribed and a new consultation was scheduled. She suspended topiramate due to weight loss and missed the follow-up appointment. On Jan/2020, she consulted her family doctor reporting sadness, insomnia, constipation, and weight loss. She maintained the migraine and the use of suppositories. After screening for organic causes, she was diagnosed with depressive disorder and MOH. It was explained that drug abuse could cause headaches and treatment would involve the cessation of that medication. She was medicated with antidepressants, and, in the next consultations, weight recovery, improved mood, less frequent headache, and reduced suppository use until withdrawal were documented. Comment: MOH develops due to the excessive use of headache relievers, and the suspension of medication is the only effective treatment. This patient maintained a situation of medication overuse for eight months, resulting in MOH and risk of liver toxicity. The family doctor is crucial to early detecting and addressing drug abuse.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary inclusion of protected sodium butyrate (PSB) on the intestinal development and feed nutrient metabolizability of commercial laying hens. The birds started to receive the treatment rations at 58 weeks of age. At 76 weeks of age the laying hens were distributed in a randomized block design to four treatments (0, 105, 210 and 300 g t-1/PSB), six replicates, and two birds/replicate. The nitrogen balance (NB), ether extract balance (EEB), dry matter metabolizability coefficient, nitrogen, ether extract, ash, apparent metabolizable energy (AME), and AME corrected by nitrogen (AMEn) were evaluated. For assessment of intestinal development, we evaluated the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, and colorectal lengths, the relative intestine weight and villus height, crypt depth, and villus:crypt ratio of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. A decreasing linear effect was observed in the duodenum length, while an increasing linear effect was observed in the height of the duodenum and jejunum villi. A quadratic effect was found in the jejunum crypt depth. A linear increasing effect was found on the villus:crypt ratio of the duodenum and jejunum, and a quadratic effect was observed in the ileum. Quadratic and increasing linear effects were observed in the NB and EEB, respectively. Additionally, increasing linear effects were observed in the AME and AMEn. The dietary addition of 300 g t-1 of PSB improved intestinal development and energy metabolizability of the diet.

Resumo O entendimento da fadiga durante a competição de Tiro com Arco pode auxiliar na otimização da rotina de treinamento de atletas em diferentes níveis competitivos. Este estudo investigou o efeito do nível de experiência do atleta sobre as respostas fisiológicas, durante competição simulada de Tiro com Arco para um atleta de elite (EA) e um arqueiro iniciante (NA). Esforço percebido, concentração de lactato e glicose sanguínea, força de preensão manual e eletromiografia foram registrados no início, após cada série e, 30-min após a simulação. O EA apresentou maior força de preensão manual para ambos braços, valor de média RMS constantemente mais baixo (Baseline 0,279V e 12ª série 0,221V, -20,7%), e valor de MF estável no decorrer da competição (Baseline 146Hz a 12a série 140Hz). O NA demonstrou menor força de preensão manual, aumento na RMS após a 6a série até o final da competição (Baseline 0,387V, 6a 0,576V, and 12a série 0,720V, +46,2%) e pequena diminuição na MF da 6ª até o final da 12ª série (2a série 122Hz, 4a série 127Hz, 6a série 112Hz e 12a série 117Hz, - 4,1%). Assim, todos os marcadores relacionados a fadiga apresentaram resposta discreta na simulação de competição de Tiro com Arco, com maior magnitude no NA, em comparação com EA. Este estudo apresentou as demandas fisiológicas da competição simulada de Tiro com Arco, no formato oficial, permitindo que treinadores e cientistas do esporte possam tomar decisões com maior confiança sobre estratégias de competição e treinamento.

Abstract The understanding of fatigue development during Archery competition would guide sports scientists, coaches and athletes on how to optimize the training routines of athletes from different competitive levels. This study investigated the effect of expertise level on physiological responses, during simulated archery competition (double-round 70m, 12 series, 6 arrows for an elite Brazilian Archer (EA) and a Novice Archer (NA). Ratings of perceived exertion, blood lactate and glucose, handgrip strength and electromyography were registered at the beginning, after each set from the 2nd to the 12tharrow and, 30-min after the competition simulation. The EA showed a greater handgrip strength for both arms, a constant lower mean RMS value (Baseline 0.279V and 12th set 0.221V, -20.7%), and a stable MF value throughout the competition (Baseline 146Hz to 12th set 140Hz). The NA showed a smaller handgrip strength, an increase in RMS after the 6th set towards the end of the competition (Baseline 0.387V, 6th 0.576V, and 12th set 0.720V, +46.2%) and a minor decrease in MF from the 6th to the end of 12th set (2nd set 122Hz, 4th set 127Hz, 6th set 112Hz and 12th set 117Hz, - 4.1%). In summary, all the fatigue-related markers showed a mild response to the Archery competition simulation, although a greater magnitude was observed in the NA, compared to the EA. This study reported the physiologic demands of an Archery simulated competition, in an official format, allowing coaches and sport scientists to draw more confident decisions on competition strategy and training design.

Introdução: O delirium é uma das patologias mentais presente nos cuidados de saúde primários, particularmente nos idosos. Pode apresentar várias condições médicas subjacentes, nomeadamente o descontrolo metabólico com hiperglicemia, sendo fundamental um diagnóstico etiológico rápido. Descrição do caso: Mulher, 80 anos, caucasiana, 4º ano de escolaridade, autónoma. Antecedentes de obesidade, hipertensão arterial, dislipidemia, valvulopatia e depressão. Trazida ao médico de família (MF) pela filha por quadro intermitente com dois meses de evolução de polifagia, comprometimento da memória imediata e recente, discurso incoerente, bradifasia, défice de atenção, perturbação do sono e irritabilidade. Flutuação diária da clínica, com agravamento nos três dias anteriores à consulta. Negava perda de peso, poliúria ou polidipsia. Ao exame objetivo, tensão arterial de 136/57mmHg, movimentos estereotipados e Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE): 22/30. Fez estudo para causa secundária de declínio cognitivo, estabelecendo-se o diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (hemoglobina glicada (HbA1c): 14%), sem outras alterações. Iniciou cuidados higieno-dietéticos, metformina e insulinoterapia. Foi reavaliada dois meses e meio depois, referindo cumprir rigorosamente plano alimentar e de exercício físico diário e melhoria do quadro cognitivo. Ao exame objetivo tensão arterial de 110/86mmHg, MMSE: 25/30, teste do relógio sem alterações e HbA1c de 7,8%. Comentário: O reconhecimento de que a hiperglicemia é uma das possíveis etiologias de delirium pode acelerar a resolução do quadro e diminuir o seu impacto na morbimortalidade dos doentes. O MF deve prestar um acompanhamento próximo e contínuo e estar alerta para o facto de que patologias comuns se podem apresentar com quadros clínicos variados.

Introduction: Delirium is one of the mental disorders observed in primary health care, particularly in the elderly. It may result of several subjacent medical conditions, namely metabolic unbalance with hyperglycemia, and a rapid etiologic diagnosis is critical. Description of the case: 80 years-old Caucasian woman, independent for daily life activities, four years of education, with a clinical history of obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, valvular disease and depression. She was brought to the family physician by her daughter due to intermittent polyphagia, impaired immediate and recent memory, incoherent speech, bradyphasia, attention deficit, sleep disturbance and irritability, since two months. She also had daily fluctuation of symptoms, with clinical deterioration in the three days prior to the consultation. She denied weight loss, polyuria or polydipsia. On physical examination she had a blood pressure of 136/57mmHg, stereotypical movements and a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 22/30. The study for secondary causes of cognitive decline established the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (HbA1c: 14%) without other changes. She started a nutrition care plan, metformin and insulin. She was re-evaluated two and a half months later, referring to have followed the nutrition and exercise care plan rigorously, and improvement of the cognitive changes. Physical examination showed a blood pressure of 110/86mmHg, MMSE score: 25/30, normal test of the clock, and HbA1c of 7.8%. Comment: The recognition that hyperglycemia is one of the possible etiologies of delirium can accelerate the resolution of the symptoms and decrease its impact on patients' morbidity and mortality. The family physician should provide a close and continuous follow-up and to be aware that common pathologies may present with varied clinical presentations.

RESUMEN El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la influencia de diferentes fuentes y dosis de fertilización orgánica y mineral en la producción de lechuga crespa. Se utilizó un diseño de bloques completos al azar, en un esquema factorial (6 x 3), donde se evaluaron seis dosis de fertilizante (1 = 0, 2 = 25; 3 = 50; 4 = 100; 5 = 150 y 6 = 200%) de la fertili zación recomendada para la lechuga, tres fuentes de abono fertilizante (estiércol bonino (EB) y aves de corral (CP)), descompuesto, aplicado húmedo 100% en la siembra: 1 = EB - 0; 12,5; 25; 50; 75 y 100 Mg ha-1; 2 = CP 0; 5; 10; 20; 30 y 40 Mg ha-1; 3 = Fertilización mineral varió solo las cantidades de N; 3 = 0; 37,5; 75; 150; 225 y 300 kg ha-1, junto a 400 kg ha-1 de P2O5 y 60 kg ha-1 de K2O que se mantuvo en las parcelas con fertilización mineral. La fertilización con EB y CP demostró ser más eficiente que la fertilización mineral en la producción de lechuga crespa, principalmente debido a los mayores efectos residuales del P en el suelo. El estiércol CP proporcionó valores más altos de pH, P y K, mientras que el EB de Mg, materia orgánica y carbono orgánico en el suelo. La dosis del 144% de fertilizantes exclusivamente orgánicos en base húmeda correspondiente a estiércol de 72 Mg ha-1 EB y 29 Mg ha-1 CP, dieron los mejores rendimientos para la lechuga crespa en un Latosol.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different sources and doses of organic and mine ral fertilization on the production of green-leaf lettuce. The experiment design used randomized blocks in a factorial scheme (6x3), with six doses of fertilizers (1 = 0; 2 = 25; 3 = 50; 4 = 100; 5 = 150, and 6 = 200% of the recommended fertilization for green-leaf lettuce crop) and three sources of fertilizers [cattle manure (CaM) and chicken manure (ChM), decomposed, on a wet basis and applied 100% at planting at the doses: CaM - 0, 12.5, 25, 50, 75, 100 Mg ha-1; ChM - 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 Mg ha-1; mineral fertilization (MF) varying the N levels: 0, 37.5, 75, 150, 225, 300 kg ha-1 plus 400 kg ha-1 of P2O5 and 60 kg ha-1 of K2O]. The fertiliza tion with CaM and ChM was more efficient than the MF at increasing the production of green-leaf lettuce, mainly because of the higher residual effects of P in the Oxisol. The ChM provided a higher soil pH, P and K, while the CaM provided a higher soil Mg, organic carbon and organic matter. The dose with 144% of organic fertilization exclusively on a wet basis corresponding to 72 Mg ha-1 of CaM and 29 Mg ha-1 of ChM resulted in the highest green-leaf lettuce yield.

Resumo O objetivo nesse estudo foi utilizar o isobornil metacrilato (IBOMA) como monômero combinante ou substituinte na matriz resinosa de resinas compostas odontológicas. Para tanto, a matriz resinosa foi formulada com 60 % em peso de BisGMA e 40 % em peso de monômero diluente. O TEGDMA foi utilizado como único monômero diluente para o grupo controle com 40 % em peso, enquanto a substituição total de TEGDMA foi feita com 40 % em peso de IBOMA. Na combinação de IBOMA e TEGDMA foram utilizados 20 % em peso de cada monômero. Na matriz resinosa, 65 % em peso de partículas de carga foi adicionado. O grau de conversão (GC) utilizando FT-IR, a resistência flexural (RF), o módulo flexural (MF), a contração de polimerização por formação de gap (FG) utilizando Microscopia Confocal à Laser, a Dureza Knoop (DK) e a degradação em solvente (DS) foram avaliados. Todos os dados foram analisados utilizando ANOVA e teste de Tukey (α=0.05; b=0.2). Os resultados demonstraram que reduzindo ou substituindo o TEGDMA utilizando o IBOMA não afetou o GC (p=0.085), a RF (p=0.886) ou o MF (p=0.414). Ainda, quando o IBOMA foi utilizado como um monômero combinante ou substituinte, menor FG foi observada em comparação ao controle contendo apenas TEGDMA como monômero diluente (p=0.032). Contudo, apesar de todos os compósitos terem apresentados redução na DK durante o teste de DS, a combinação de IBOMA e TEGDMA demonstrou uma redução na DK similar ao grupo (p=0.001), enquanto a substituição total de TEGDMA com IBOMA reduziu a DK após DS (p=0.041). Dessa forma, a combinação do IBOMA e TEGDMA parece reduzir DS e a FG sem afetar as propriedades de resinas compostas.

Abstract The aim of this study was to use the isobornyl methacrylate (IBOMA) as a combining or substituent diluent monomer in the resin matrix of dental resin composites. Thus, the resin matrix was formulated with 60 wt% of BisGMA and 40 wt% of diluent monomers. TEGDMA as the only diluent monomer was used as control with 40 wt%, while total substitution of TEGDMA was done with 40 wt% of IBOMA. The combination of IBOMA and TEGDMA was done with 20 wt% of each monomer. To the resin matrix, 65 wt% of filler particles was added. Degree of conversion (DC) using FT-IR, flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), polymerization shrinkage by gap formation (GF), Knoop hardness (KH) and solvent degradation (SD) were evaluated. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α=0.05; b=0.2). The results showed that reducing or substituting TEGDMA using IBOMA did not affect the DC (0.085), FS (p=0.886) or FM (p=0.414). Also, when IBOMA was used, lower GF was found in comparison to the control containing only TEGDMA as the diluent monomer (p=0.032). However, even though all composites presented reduction in KH during the SD test, the combination of IBOMA and TEGDMA showed similar reduction in KHN in comparison to the control group (p=0.001), while the total substitution of TEGDMA with IBOMA decreased KHN after SD (p=0.041). Thus, the combination of IBOMA and TEGDMA seem to reduce SD and GF without affecting the properties of resin composites.

ABSTRACT High environmental temperature is limiting factor in broiler production. In order to minimize the undesirable consequences of acute or chronic heat stress, the techniques of fixed dietary electrolyte balance and early heat conditioning were evaluated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible interactions and effects of dietary electrolyte balance and early heat conditioning on feed intake, body weight, feed conversion ratio, mortality, energy bioeconomic index, fecal moisture, abdominal fat, and breast meat color (L*a*b*) of broilers submitted to chronic or acute heat stress. In total, 1280 chicks, were equally divided in experiment I (chronic heat stress, 6h/day at 32ºC from 35 to 39 d of age) and II (acute heat stress, 36 ºC for 6h at 38 days of age). The data of both experiments were combined and analyzed according to a 2x2x2 factorial arrangement (early heat conditioning (ETC) or not; fixed dietary electrolyte balance (EB) or not; and exposure to acute or chronic heat stress). ETC consisted of exposing 5-d-old birds to 36.0 °C for 24 hours. No interaction among the evaluated factors was detected. Birds exposed to acute heat stress presented significantly higher compared with chronic heat stress. Fixed dietary EB resulted in significantly higher fecal moisture. Lower abdominal fat percentage was obtained in birds exposed to chronic relative to acute heat stress. Higher breast meat L* and b* values were observed in birds exposed to acute heat stress than those submitted to chronic heat stress, indicating worse meat quality.

Abstract Aims: Sedentary behavior (SB) has emerged as an important risk factor for poor health. Evidence showed that patients with heart failure (HF) exhibit high levels of SB, and that high SB increases mortality among such patients. We aimed to identify factors associated with SB in HF patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with adults with HF and categorized under New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class I-III. Sociodemographic, clinical, and health information were gathered. Evaluation of SB (by sitting time) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was performed by self-reported measures. Functional capacity was assessed using the Duke Activity Status Index. Simple and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to identify the most suitable predictive model. Results: The sample (n = 80) comprised predominantly of patients in functional class I, men, and with an average age of 50.8 years. Time spent on SB totaled to 7.69 ± 2.35 h/day. Weekly volume of MVPA, functional capacity, and previous stroke were predictors of higher SB. Using simple linear regression analysis, the variables body mass index, quality of life, NYHA functional class, total comorbidities, dyslipidemia, MVPA in the leisure domain, and the use of diuretics, statins, and sildenafil were shown to have a statistically significant association with SB. Conclusion: In patients with HF, a longer time spent in SB was associated with low volumes of MVPA, low functional capacity, and history of stroke. More studies are needed to corroborate these findings.
