ABSTRACT Lead is a heavy metal and an important cause of acute or chronic toxicosis in humans, domestic, and wild animals. This report aims to describe a case of chronic lead poisoning in a jaguar (Panthera onca) kept under human care that was rescued from the wild environment. The animal was rescued in poor condition in 2004 and kept under human care at the Belo Horizonte Zoological Garden (Minas Gerais, Brazil) until 2020, when it presented with anorexia, vomiting and ataxia. Over the past years the animal had episodes of anemia and increased serum urea and creatinine. Radiography demonstrated 21 radiopaque projectiles on the right side of the face. At necropsy there were multiple projectiles surrounded by fibrous tissue in the subcutaneous of the right side of the face, fibrinous peritonitis, multiple gastric ulcers, and melena. The lead dosage was performed using the atomic absorption spectrometry technique using renal tissue collected at necropsy, with a result of 908 ppb (µg/kg). The findings of projectiles associated with the dosage of lead above the reference limits allow the diagnosis of chronic intoxication in this case.

RESUMO Chumbo é um metal pesado e uma causa importante de toxicose crônica no homem e em animais domésticos e selvagens. Este relato teve como objetivo descrever um caso de intoxicação crônica por chumbo em uma onça-pintada (Panthera onca), mantida sob cuidados humanos, que foi resgatada de seu ambiente natural em 2004, em pobre condição corporal. O animal foi encaminhado ao zoológico de Belo Horizonte (MG, Brasil), onde permaneceu até 2020, quando desenvolveu anorexia, vômitos e ataxia. Durante os últimos anos, o animal teve episódios de anemia e aumento da concentração sérica de ureia e creatinina. O exame radiográfico demonstrou 21 projéteis radiodensos na face direita. À necropsia, foram observados vários projéteis envoltos por tecido conjuntivo no subcutâneo da face esquerda, peritonite fibrinosa, múltiplas úlceras gástricas e melena. A concentração de chumbo foi determinada por espectrometria de absorção atômica em amostras de tecido renal, indicando 908 ppb (µg/kg). O achado de projéteis de chumbo associado à elevada concentração de chumbo é compatível com intoxicação crônica por chumbo neste caso.

ABSTRACT Degradation of bovine small intestine and respective effects on biomechanics have not been described to date. Biomechanical testing of intestinal tissues is often carried out within a few hours of donor death and tissue deterioration is not accounted for. Freezing is efficient for the preservation of several tissues; however, it may cause cellular damage. This study investigated the morphologic and biomechanical changes of bovine jejunum at different postmortem moments. Effects of freezing and thawing on morphology and biomechanical behavior were also examined. Macroscopic changes were first noted within eight hours of death. At this time, histologic changes also started to set in, and biomechanical tests revealed lower bursting pressure (203.10±46.14mmHg). At 12 hours, tissue rearrangement was noted, and bursting pressure increased (238.43±31.04mmHg). A second drop in pressure was detected at 18 hours (235.20±38.21mmHg), followed by a progressive drop until the end of the experimental period. Histologic changes revealed progressive deterioration. Mechanical resistance did not differ between thawed and fresh specimens. It was concluded that bovine jejunal specimens retain biomechanical resistance up to 6 hours after death. Freezing and thawing did not affect the mechanical resistance of the intestinal wall in this experimental model.

RESUMO A degradação do intestino delgado de bovinos e seu efeito biomecânico não são descritos na literatura. Trabalhos que envolvem a biomecânica intestinal realizam os ensaios em poucas horas após o óbito dos doadores, sem avaliação de seu estado de deterioração. O congelamento é eficiente na conservação de vários tecidos, porém pode provocar danos em nível celular. Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a degradação morfológica e biomecânica do jejuno de bovinos em diferentes tempos post mortem. O efeito do congelamento e do descongelamento sobre essas características também foi avaliado. As primeiras alterações macroscópicas foram observadas oito horas após o óbito. No mesmo momento, se iniciaram as alterações histológicas e a menor pressão suportada ao teste biomecânico (203,10±46,14mmHg). A partir de 12 horas, o tecido sofreu um rearranjo, suportando maior pressão (238,43±31,04mmHg). Uma segunda queda foi detectada após 18 horas (235,20±38,21mmHg), seguida de redução progressiva até o término do experimento. As lesões histológicas foram progressivas e graduais. As amostras testadas após descongelamento não apresentaram diferença estatística quanto à resistência mecânica em comparação com os espécimes frescos. Concluiu-se que as amostras mantêm sua resistência biomecânica até 6 horas após o óbito. Também se mostrou que o congelamento e o descongelamento, nas condições testadas, não alteraram a resistência mecânica da parede intestinal.

We investigated the effects of the juçara fruit (Euterpe edulis Martius) pulp and lyophilized extract on the expression of cytoprotective genes nuclear factor erythroid 2 (NF-E2)-related factor 2 (NRF2), kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (KEAP1), superoxide dismutase (SOD1), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX2) in human colorectal cancer cell lines (HT-29 and Caco-2). Cells were cultured for 24 h in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium containing juçara fruit pulp (5, 10, or 50 mg/mL) or lyophilized extract (0.05, 0.1, or 0.5 mg/mL), and gene expression was quantified using real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. All studied genes showed significant variation in gene expression among different concentrations of pulp or lyophilized extract. Overall, the expression of the selected genes decreased in both cell lines following exposure to the pulp or lyophilized extract in a dose-dependent manner for most of the concentrations studied. In summary, our study showed that the compounds in juçara fruit inhibited the expression of cytoprotective genes associated with the antioxidant response and that, although not cytotoxic at the concentrations studied, they could potentially block the activation of the NRF2/KEAP1 pathway.

L-Arginine and chronic exercise reduce oxidative stress. However, it is unclear how they affect cardiomyocytes during cardiovascular disease (CVD) development. The aim of this research was to investigate the possible effects of L-arginine supplementation and aerobic training on systemic oxidative stress and their consequences on cardiomyocytes during cardiometabolic disease onset caused by excess fructose. Wistar rats were allocated into four groups: control (C), fructose (F, 10% fructose in water), fructose training (FT; moderate running, 50-70% of the maximal velocity), and fructose arginine (FA; 880 mg/kg/day). Fructose was given for two weeks and fructose plus treatments for the subsequent eight weeks. Body composition, blood glucose, insulin, lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, nitrite, metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) activity, left ventricle histological changes, microRNA-126, -195, and -146, eNOS, p-eNOS, and TNF-α expressions were analyzed. Higher abdominal fat mass, triacylglycerol level, and insulin level were observed in the F group, and both treatments reversed these alterations. Myocardial vascularization was impaired in fructose-fed groups, except in FT. Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy was observed in all fructose-fed groups. TNF-α levels were higher in fructose-fed groups than in the C group, and p-eNOS levels were higher in the FA than in the C and F groups. Lipid peroxidation was higher in the F group than in the FT and C groups. During CVD onset, moderate aerobic exercise reduced lipid peroxidation, and both training and L-arginine prevented metabolic changes caused by excessive fructose. Myocardial vascularization was impaired by fructose, and cardiomyocyte hypertrophy appeared to be influenced by pro-inflammatory and oxidative environments.

RESUMO Novilhas pré-púberes Nelore (G-N=15) e mestiças Nelore x Aberdeen Angus (G-NA=15) foram utilizadas neste estudo. CFA, peso vivo, escore de condição corporal (ECC), diâmetros do ovário e folículo dominante (FD) foram determinados em cada animal. A indução da puberdade foi realizada pela inserção de um dispositivo de progesterona de quarto uso (D0), que foi retirado no D12. Além disso, 1mg de benzoato de estradiol foi administrado e a intensidade do estro foi classificada (D12). No D21, foram registrados a presença e o diâmetro do corpo lúteo (CL). A CFA foi altamente repetível, independentemente da indução hormonal em G-N (r=0,79) e G-NA (r=0,90). A CFA média foi maior em G-N em comparação com G-NA (24,2±8,5 vs. 17,7±9,0 folículos). Uma variação no ECC ao longo do estudo ocorreu em G-NA, mas não em G-N. O ganho de peso médio (GPM) foi maior em G-NA em comparação com G-N (0,69±0,33 vs. 0,40±0,29kg/dia). O G-NA resultou em um diâmetro maior de FD em D12 do que o G-N (11,6±2,7 vs. 9,3±1,5mm). Em conclusão, a CFA foi maior em novilhas Nelore, embora em ambas as raças essa contagem tenha sido altamente repetível durante a indução da puberdade. Novilhas mestiças apresentaram maior ECC e GPM com maior diâmetro de FD, indicando maior precocidade quando comparadas às novilhas Nelore.

ABSTRACT Prepubertal Nelore (G-N = 15) and crossbred Nelore x Aberdeen Angus heifers (G-NA = 15) were used for this study. AFC, live weight, body condition score (BCS), ovary and dominant follicle (DF) diameters were determined in each animal. Puberty induction was performed by insertion of a 4th use progesterone device (D0) which was removed on D12. Also, 1 mg estradiol benzoate was administered, and estrus intensity was classified (D12). At D21, the presence and diameter of the corpus luteum (CL) were registered. AFC was highly repeatable, regardless of hormone induction in both G-N (r=0.79) and G-NA (r=0.90). The mean AFC was greater in G-N compared to G-NA (24.2±8.5 vs. 17.7±9.0 follicles). A variation in BCS throughout the study occurred in G-NA, but not in G-N. The average weight gain (AWG) was greater in G-NA compared to G-N (0.69±0.33 vs. 0.40±0.29kg/day). The G-NA resulted in a larger diameter of DF at D12 than G-N (11.6±2.7 vs. 9.3±1.5mm). In conclusion, AFC was greater in Nelore heifers, although in both breeds this count was highly repeatable during puberty induction. Crossbred heifers had greater BCS and AWG with greater diameter of DF, indicating higher precocity when compared to Nelore heifers.

Abstract The use of β-galactosidase in food products has been a major focus of the industry. Therefore, the development of efficient and inexpensive methodologies to purify it is essential. Thus, this study aimed to recover the enzyme β-galactosidase (β-gal) by ion-exchange chromatography in a fixed-bed column. Batch adsorption tests were performed using four types of adsorbents. The β-gal adsorption capacity in batch mode using Streamline DEAE resin presented the best performance, with a retention capacity of 18.77 ± 0.14 U/g at pH 6.0. A 22 experimental design was applied to optimize the β-gal recovery using an AKTA Start system, evaluating the ionic strength and the pH as process parameters. The results showed that ionic strength exerted a greater influence on fold purification (FP). The β-gal fraction in elution using 0.1-0.4 M of NaCl showed a yield of 51.65 ± 0.17% and FP of 2.00 ± 0.43. Electrophoresis confirmed the β-gal recovery, where an evident band with a molecular weight between 60 and 120 kDa was observed. These results point to the recovery of a stable β-gal of K. lactis with potential industrial applications.

The objective of this research was to determine the pasture structure, nutritional value, animal behaviour, intake, and performance of Santa Inês sheep grazing pastures with various mixtures of grass (Andropogon gayanus) and forage legume (Stylosanthes sp. and Calopogonium mucunoides). A randomized block design was adopted with the treatments arranged in a 3 x 2 factorial scheme, with the factors consisting of cropping systems and grazing cycles. Grass in the mixed species pastures had a greater leaf/stem ratio than in the monoculture. Total forage mass was greater in the mixed pastures, which had the highest concentrations of crude protein and total digestible nutrients, the lowest fibre concentration, and the highest in vitro dry matter digestibility. Legumes were grazed with the highest frequency, and biting rate was highest in Andropogon gayanus with Stylosanthes sp. The highest intake (kg/day) was found in the mixed swards and the highest animal weight gain (143 g/day) in the mixed pastures. The pastures of Andropogon gayanus mixed with Stylosanthes sp. and C. mucunoides showed improved forage nutritive value and intake compared with the grass monoculture.

RESUMO: Dirofilaria immitis é um parasito de coração e de grandes vasos que acomete principalmente cães domésticos, também causador de uma zoonose reemergente nos últimos anos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a prevalência, fatores associados e áreas geográficas de D. immitis em cães na cidade de Sousa, Paraíba, Nordeste do Brasil. Para isso, foram selecionados e avaliados 320 cães, sendo 160 domiciliados e 160 errantes, provenientes dos 32 bairros da cidade. Foi realizado o exame clínico, coleta de sangue e dados epidemiológicos de cada animal. O ambiente foi observado visualmente quanto as condições de saneamento no momento de avaliação. Para pesquisa de microfilárias, foram realizados três métodos: esfregaço sanguíneo capilar (ESC), periférico (ESP) e teste de Knott-modificado, associado ao diagnóstico morfométrico das microfilárias. Os dados foram submetidos a estatísticas uni e multivariadas para observação de fatores de risco e avaliação qualitativa dos exames. Obteve-se prevalência de 17,5% (56/320) de animais positivos para D. immitis, sendo 25% (40/160) errantes e 10% (16/160) domiciliados. Dos 32 bairros avaliados, em 24 foram encontrados cães positivos, sendo Angelim e Doutor Zezé, os bairros com maior percentual 1,56% (5/320) cada. Somente as categorias de alterações cardíacas (OR 6,231 [1.539-25.236]) e cães errantes (OR 2,463 [1.281-4.735]) demonstraram potencial fator de risco para infecção. Dos 56 animais positivos, 28 apresentaram positividade nos três testes, e outros 28 demonstraram variância entre métodos e/ou entre lâminas confeccionadas. Não foram observados outros filarídeos. Considerou-se que a cidade de Sousa apresenta prevalência significativa de infecção por D. immitis, sendo necessário estabelecer formas de controle e profilaxia, para reduzir os riscos da transmissão para animais, como também para humanos.

ABSTRACT: Dirofilaria immitis is a heart and large vessel parasite that mainly affects domestic dogs and has shown a re-emerging zoonosis in recent years. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence, associated factors, and geographic areas of D. immitis in dogs in the city of Sousa, Paraíba, Northeast Brazil. A total of 320 dogs were selected and evaluated, 160 domiciled and 160 wandering, from the 32 districts of the city. Clinical examination, blood collection, and epidemiological data retrieval were performed for each animal. The sanitation conditions of the environment were visually observed at the time of evaluation. Three methods were used to investigate the morphometric diagnosis of microfilariae: capillary blood smear (ESC), peripheral blood smear (ESP), and modified Knott test. The data were subjected to univariate and multivariate statistics for the observation of risk factors and qualitative assessment of the examinations. Of the 17.5% (56/320) of animals testing positive for D. immitis, 25% (40/160) were wandering and 10% (16/160) were domiciled dogs. Positive dogs were found in 24 of the 32 neighborhoods evaluated, with Angelim and Doutor Zezé having the highest percentages of 1.56% (5/320) each. Only the categories of cardiac alterations (OR 6.231 [1,539-25,236]) and stray dogs (OR 2.463 [1,281-4,735]) demonstrated potential risk factors for infection. Of the 56 positive animals, 28 were positive in the three tests, and another 28 showed variance between methods and/or between prepared slides. No other filaridae were observed. The city of Sousa is considered to have a significant prevalence of infection by D. immitis, and forms of control and prophylaxis are required to reduce the risks of transmission to animals, as well as to humans.

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial behavior of polypyrrole nanoparticles (PPy-NPs) in water against biofilm producer or not S. aureus isolated from cows and goats with mastitis. One hundred and thirty-eight isolates of S. aureus were initially evaluated for biofilm formation by spectrophotometry in microplates. In addition, the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of PPy-NPs in water for planktonic S. aureus were determined. From the bovine samples analyzed, 5 (4.46%) S. aureus isolates showed a strong biofilm production, 17 (15.18%) moderate production, 36 (32.14%) with weak production and 54 (48.21%) did not produce biofilms. Strains from goats (26) showed no biofilm production in 18 (69.23%) strains and weak biofilm production in 8 (30.76%) strains. The MIC and MBC of S. aureus to PPy-NPs were found in the same concentration (125µɡ/mL) in all strains tested, regardless of biofilm production or not. This finding provides a new insight into the interaction between PPy-NPs and S. aureus, and will offer potential benefits for the control of mastitis.

Abstract: Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a technique that combines chemotherapy with local application of specific electric pulses with the aim of increasing the permeability of the plasma membrane in a reversible way, improving the influx of chemotherapeutic drugs into the cytoplasm and potentiating their cytotoxic effects. This technique has broadened the range of possible treatments for oncological patients, either on its own or as adjuvant to surgical procedures. It is especially useful in tumors located in regions with only a small surgical safety margin, such as the limb extremities, skull, oral cavity, neck and perianal region, among others. ECT makes it feasible to perform procedures more conservatively, or even to perform otherwise infeasible procedures, by expanding the margins without removing healthy tissues. The objective of this paper is to provide a brief bibliographic review of the principles, applications and future possibilities of electrochemotherapy, helping to disseminate pertinent information about this relatively new technique for the treatment of cancer.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of lycopene on quality parameters of cryopreserved ram semen. Semen samples were collected from three Santa Inês rams to form a seminal pool (n = 8). Aliquots from each pool were diluted in Tris-egg yolk extender to create experimental groups containing 0 μΜ (control), 0.1 μΜ, 1 μΜ and 5 μΜ lycopene. The samples were evaluated for sperm kinetics, integrity of plasma and acrosomal membranes, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and lipid peroxidation immediately after thawing and after incubation for two hours at 37 °C. The addition of lycopene had no effect on the parameters that were evaluated at the time of thawing when compared with the control. However, after incubation, the groups with added lycopene showed a decrease in progressive motility. All experimental groups showed a significant reduction in linearity and straightness following incubation. Furthermore, the 5 μΜ lycopene group showed a decrease in wobble and an increase in amplitude of lateral head displacement. In conclusion, the addition of lycopene to the freezing extender of ram semen affected the kinetics parameters of cryopreserved spermatozoa after a two-hour incubation period.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da suplementação do diluidor de congelação de sêmen ovino com o flavonoide miricetina contra os danos ocasionados aos espermatozoides. Oito pools de sêmen, obtidos de quatro reprodutores ovinos, foram congelados com diferentes concentrações de miricetina (0, 1, 10, 100 e 1000nM). Após o descongelamento, o sêmen foi avaliado quanto à cinética espermática, à integridade das membranas plasmática e acrossomal, ao potencial de membrana mitocondrial, aos níveis de ROS intracelular, à peroxidação lipídica e à estabilidade de membrana. Amostras tratadas com miricetina 10nM apresentaram menor percentual de células rápidas (P≤0,05), quando comparadas ao grupo miricetina 1000nM. Amostras do grupo controle apresentaram maior (P≤0,05) VAP que o grupo 10nM de miricetina, enquanto amostras criopreservadas com miricetina (10, 100 e 1000nM) evidenciaram maior (P<0,05) BCF, quando comparadas ao grupo controle. O grupo tratado com miricetina 1000nM apresentou maior percentual (P<0,05) de células com peroxidação lipídica, quando comparado ao grupo controle. Em conclusão, a suplementação do diluidor de criopreservação de sêmen ovino com 10 e 100nM de miricetina afeta a cinética espermática sem provocar alterações na estrutura geral do gameta, enquanto 1000nM de miricetina provoca mudanças na cinética associadas à danos peroxidativos.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the supplementation of ram semen frozen with extender with the flavonoid myricetin against damage to sperm. Eight pools of semen obtained from four ram breeders, were frozen with different concentrations of myicetin (0, 1, 10, 100 and 1000nM). After thawing, the semen was evaluated for spermatic kinetics, plasma and acrosome membrane integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential, intracellular ROS levels, lipid peroxidation, and membrane stability. Samples treated with 10nM myricetin preserved a lower percentage of rapid cells (P≤0.05) when compared to the 1000nM myricetin group. Samples from the control group presented higher (P≤0.05) VAP than 10nM group of myricetin, while cryopreserved samples with myicetin (10, 100 and 1000nM) showed greater (P<0.05) BCF, when compared to control group. The group treated with 1000nM myricetin had a higher percentage (P<0.05) of cells with lipid peroxidation, when compared to the control group. In conclusion, supplementation of ram semen cryopreservation extender with 10 and 100nM myricetin affects sperm kinetics, without causing changes in the overall structure of the gamete, while 1000nM myricetin causes changes in the kinetics associated with peroxidative damage.

RESUMO: As características da resistência múltipla em biótipos de Euphorbia heterophylla a herbicidas inibidores da ALS (acetolactato sintase) e da PPO (Protoporfirinogênio oxidase) e os mecanismos responsáveis ainda não estão completamente elucidados. Os objetivos deste estudo foram identificar a existência de resistência cruzada a herbicidas de diferentes grupos químicos de inibidores da ALS (imidazolinonas, sulfonilureias, pirimidil-benzoatos e sulfonanilidas) e também de inibidores da PPO (difeniléteres, ftalamidas, oxadiazoles, triazolinonas e pirimidinedionas) em biótipos de E. heterophylla com resistência múltipla a esses herbicidas; analisar se as enzimas antioxidantes superóxido dismutase (SOD) e peroxidase (POD) constituem mecanismos responsáveis pela resistência a inibidores da PPO. Inicialmente, foi determinada a resposta a doses de herbicidas desses diferentes grupos químicos, utilizando doses abaixo e acima da recomendada para a espécie. O controle de E. heterophylla foi determinado, estimando-se as doses necessárias para redução de 50 e 80% de controle, e calcularam-se os fatores de resistência. Foram determinadas também as atividades constitutivas e induzidas das enzimas SOD e POD. Os resultados confirmaram a resistência cruzada a todos os grupos químicos de inibidores da ALS e da PPO nos biótipos Bom Sucesso do Sul e Vitorino. As atividades constitutivas e induzidas das enzimas SOD e POD foram superiores nas plantas dos biótipos de E. heterophylla Vitorino e Bom Sucesso do Sul, contribuindo para sua resistência aos herbicidas inibidores da PPO.

ABSTRACT: The characteristics of multiple resistance in Euphorbia heterophylla biotypes to herbicides that are inhibitors of ALS (Acetolactate synthase) and PPO (Protoporphyrinogen oxidase) and their responsible mechanisms are still not completely elucidated. The objectives of this study were to identify cross-resistance to herbicides from different chemical groups of ALS inhibitors (imidazolinones, sulfonylureas, pyrimidyl benzoates and sulfonanilides) and also PPO inhibitors (diphenylethers, phthalamides, oxadiazoles, triazolinones and pyrimidinediones) in E. heterophylla biotypes with multiple resistance to these herbicides; to analyze whether the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) constitute mechanisms that are responsible for the resistance to PPO inhibitors. Initially, the response to doses of herbicides from these different chemical groups was determined, using doses below and above the one recommended for the species. The control of E. heterophylla was determined, estimating the required doses for a 50 and 80% control reduction and calculating the resistance factors. The constitutive and induced activities of the SOD and POD enzymes were also determined. The results confirmed cross-resistance for all chemical groups of ALS and PPO inhibitors in the Bom Sucesso do Sul and Vitorino biotypes. The constitutive and induced activities of the SOD and POD enzymes were superior in plants from the E. heterophylla biotypes Vitorino and Bom Sucesso do Sul, contributing to their resistance to PPO inhibiting herbicides.

RESUMO A lesão renal isquêmica pode estar associada a procedimentos urológicos, tais como cirurgia renovascular, cirurgia renal extracorpórea ou transplante renal. Essa injúria, muitas vezes, é seguida de insuficiência renal aguda. O objetivo deste trabalho foi observar a localização da E-caderina e da β-catenina em rim de cães, além de relacionar a expressão dessas proteínas das junções de aderência em diferentes tempos de isquemia e reperfusão com ou sem a aplicação de clorpromazina. Para tanto, foram utilizados 12 cães, distribuídos aleatoriamente em dois grupos de seis indivíduos: grupo A, com isquemia e reperfusão sem tratamento por clorpromazina, e o grupo B, com isquemia e reperfusão tratado por clorpromazina. No procedimento cirúrgico, foi realizada uma incisão paracostal esquerda para identificação e isolamento do rim esquerdo e da artéria renal esquerda. Após o isolamento da artéria, os animais de todos os grupos tiveram o vaso ocluído. Os animais do grupo B receberam clorpromazina via endovenosa, na dose de 5mg/kg, 15min antes da clampagem do vaso, que durou uma hora. Após este período, as artérias renais foram desobstruídas e os órgãos permaneceram em reperfusão por duas horas. Em cada grupo, foram extraídas seis amostras de parênquima renal, com utilização de agulha tru-cut, para marcação com anticorpos anti-E-caderina e anti-β-catenina por meio de imunoistoquímica. E-caderina e β-catenina são diferencialmente expressas em segmentos do córtex e da medula em rim de cães e o uso da clorpromazina não alterou a expressão das duas proteínas.

ABSTRACT Renal ischemia can be associated with some urological procedures, such as renovascular surgery or kidney transplantation, that are often followed by acute renal failure. The aim of this study was to verify the E-cadherin and β-catenin localization in canine kidney in different times of renal ischemia and reperfusion after chlorpromazine application. Twelve dogs were randomly distributed equally into two groups. GroupA with ischemia and reperfusion without chlorpromazine and groupB with ischemia and reperfusion treated by chlorpromazine. GroupB received intravenous chlorpromazine, 15 min before the artery obstruction, which lasted 1 hour. After this period, the clamps in the renal arteries were released and the organ remained in reperfusion for 2 hours. In each group, anti-E-cadherin and anti-β-catenin antibodies were made in six tissue samples from renal parenchyma. E-cadherin and β-catenin are differentially expressed in segments from cortex and medulla in dog’s kidneys and the use of chlorpromazine did not alter the expression of both proteins. Occlusion of the left renal artery in dogs causes morphological alterations mainly in proximal convoluted tubules, beginning 30min after the start of ischemia and being aggravated after two hours of reperfusion. These results reveal that chlorpromazine did not change kidneys’ histological aspect nor E-cadherin and β-catenin expression.

Abstract This article presents the analysis of a hybrid, error correction-based, neural network model to predict the path loss for suburban areas at 800 MHz and 2600 MHz, obtained by combining empirical propagation models, ECC-33, Ericsson 9999, Okumura Hata, and 3GPP's TR 36.942, with a feedforward Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The performance of the hybrid model was compared against regular versions of the empirical models and a simple neural network fed with input parameters commonly used in related works. Results were compared with data obtained by measurements performed in the vicinity of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), in the city of Natal, Brazil. In the end, the hybrid neural network obtained the lowest RMSE indexes, besides almost equalizing the distribution of simulated and experimental data, indicating greater similarity with measurements.
