Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is considered a non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible polymer. CMC-based films are rated as flexible, clear, odorless, moderately tear resistant, resistant to oil and grease migration, and water soluble. Due to its hydrophilicity, CMC can serve as matrix to encapsulate hydrophobic substances, like essential oils, by emulsion dispersions. The essential oil of rue (Ruta graveolens) has antifungal, antimicrobial, insecticide and therapeutic properties already reported in the literature. For the incorporation of rue essential oil in the CMC films, the ultrasound-assisted emulsion technique was used. The films were produced by casting evaporation. The rue essential oil emulsion and CMC polymeric films with the incorporation of emulsified essential oil were evaluated according to the emulsion droplet size, chemical composition, morphology and thermogravimetric profile. The droplet size obtained for the emulsion was 229.1 nm. The films showed good transparency, regularity and chemical characteristics similar to those of the pure polymer.

Abstract Propolis is a resinous product collected by honeybees with a complex chemical composition. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is a polymer commonly used in wound care. The goal of the present work was to produce and characterize NaCMC membranes loaded with extract of Brazilian brown propolis (CMC-P). Flavonoids and phenolic acids were identified in the propolis extracts, where the main identified substance was kaempferide. The brown propolis extracted was active against S. aureus. The low swelling capacity and high gel fraction of CMC-P would be the consequence of propolis (responsible for a hydrophobic barrier) filling the pores of the membrane. Propolis could be anchoring the NaCMC chains (as observed by FTIR) due to interaction between components, which is corroborated by the CMC-P sample degrading less than the CMC sample (>400ºC). There was non-linear diffusion release kinetics for most phenolic substances of the propolis extract. The CMC-P sample presents potential as a dressing material.

Resumo No presente estudo nós comparamos os efeitos de um inibidor seletivo da COX-2 (etoricoxibe) com um anti-inflamatório não esteroidal não seletivo (AINE) (diclofenaco de potássio) no processo inflamatório e perda óssea alveolar em modelo de periodontite experimental. Noventa ratos Holtzman machos (250 g) foram randomizados em quatro grupos experimentais: Sham+CMC e Ligadura+CMC (controle) que receberam solução de carboximetilcelulose de sódio (CMC) a 0,5%; Ligadura+Diclofenaco e Ligadura+Etoricoxibe que receberam diclofenaco de potássio e etoricoxibe, respectivamente, suspensos em CMC 0,5% (10 mg/kg/dia). 7, 14 e 21 dias após colocação de ligadura bilateral na região cevical dos primeiros molares inferiores, os animais foram submetidos à eutanásia. No fim de cada período, as mandíbulas foram coletadas para exame radiográfico de perda óssea alveolar. Em adição, osso alveolar e ligamento periodontal foram coletados para determinar a expressão da enzima COX-2, e o tecido gengival foi coletado para determinar a expressão de PGE2. Animais submetidos à indução da doença periodontal pela ligadura (Grupo Ligadura) apresentaram um aumento significativo da expressão gênica de COX-2 nos dias 7, 14 e 21 (p<0,05). Todavia, ambos os tratamentos resultaram em uma significativa redução da perda óssea alveolar em comparação ao grupo Ligadura (p<0,05). Esse estudo mostrou que ambos os fármacos foram capazes de reduzir a perda óssea alveolar após indução da doença periodontal.

Abstract In the present study we compared the effects of the selective COX-2 inhibitor etoricoxib with those of the classical non-selective NSAID diclofenac on the inflammatory process and alveolar bone loss in an experimental model of periodontitis in rats. Ninety male Holtzman rats (250 g) were randomly sorted into four experimental groups: Sham+CMC and Ligature+CMC (control) groups which received 0.5% carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) solution; Ligature+Diclofenac and Ligature+Etoricoxib groups which received Potassium Diclofenac and Etoricoxib, respectively, suspended in 0.5% CMC (10 mg/kg/day). At 7, 14 and 21 days after placing ligatures in the cervical region of both the lower right and left first molars, the animals were euthanized. At the end of each period, the mandibles were collected for radiographic examination of alveolar bone loss. In addition, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament tissue samples were collected for COX-2 expression analysis and gingival tissues were collected for measurement of PGE2 contents. Animals with ligature-induced periodontal disease showed significant increased COX-2 gene expression at days 7, 14 and 21 (p<0.05) on alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. However, both treatments resulted in significantly reduced alveolar bone loss when compared to the untreated Ligature group (p<0.05), with no statistical difference between Etoricoxib and Diclofenac Potassium groups. This study shows that both drugs were able to reduce alveolar bone loss after periodontal disease induction.

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the cytotoxic effects of modified triple antibiotic paste and an experimental composition using calcium hydroxide on lipoteichoic acid (LTA)-primed apical papilla cells (APC). Material and Methods Human APC were tested for in vitro cytotoxicity of modified Triple Antibiotic Paste (mTAP – Ciprofloxacin, Metronidazole and Cefaclor at 1:1:1) and of a paste of Ciprofloxacin, Metronidazole and Calcium hydroxide (CMC – 1:1:2) and modified CMC (mCMC – 2:2:1) by using MTT assay. The substances were reconstituted in DMEM at 1,000 µg/mL and ¼ serially diluted before being kept in contact with cells for 1, 3, 5 and 7 days. Further, cells were primed with 1 µg/mL of Enterococcus faecalis LTA for 7 days prior to the viability test with 1,000 µg/mL of each substance. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and two-way ANOVA respectively followed by Tukey’s post-test. Significance levels were set at p<0.05. Results In the first assay, the higher cytotoxic rates were reached by mTAP for all experimental periods. CMC was found toxic for APC at 5 and 7 days, whereas mCMC did not affect the cell viability. Only CMC and mCMC were able to induce some cellular proliferation. In the second assay, when considering the condition with medium only, LTA-primed cells significantly proliferated in comparison to LTA-untreated ones. At this context, mTAP and CMC showed similar cytotoxicity than the observed for LTA-untreated cells, while mCMC was shown cytotoxic at 7 days only for LTA-primed APC. Comparing the medications, mTAP was more cytotoxic than CMC and mCMC. Conclusion mTAP showed higher cytotoxicity than CMC and mCMC and the effect of topic antimicrobials might differ when tested against apical papilla cells under physiological or activated conditions.

Resumo O uso de biomateriais capazes de gerar uma resposta biológica tem sido um dos maiores progressos em medicina regenerativa, devido à sua habilidade de suportar o crescimento e estimular a regeneração do tecido danificado. Neste contexto, biocerâmicas, particularmente o vidro bioativo (VB), foram o objetivo de múltiplos estudos. A técnica de adição de agentes porogênicos para a síntese de scaffolds é uma técnica interessante, pois vários tipos de agentes porogênicos podem ser usados. Este estudo propôs obter scaffolds através de quatro agentes porogênicos e avaliar os efeitos que a mudança na temperatura de tratamento poderiam ter em sua cristalinidade. Scaffolds de vidro bioativo obtidos pela técnica sol-gel 100S (100% SiO2) mais agentes porogênicos (parafina 1, parafina 2, cera e CMC - carboximetilcelulose) foram preparados e caracterizados. Como os melhores resultados foram obtidos com a parafina 1, scaffolds com composição 58S (60%SiO2-36%CaO-4%P2O5) e 100S usando parafina 1 como agente porogênico foram preparados. Os scaffolds foram submetidos a diferentes temperaturas de tratamento para avaliar a cristalinidade do material. A estrutura de poros foi analisada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e microtomografia computadorizada e apresentou tamanho, distribuição e porosidade satisfatória, características importantes pois permitem migração celular, transporte de nutrientes, vascularização e crescimento tecidual. Por meio da difração de raios X constatou-se a natureza amorfa dos scaffolds. A 900 °C, scaffolds de VB 58S e 100S tiveram um pequeno aumento na sua cristalinidade. As análises de BET (adsorção de N2) mostraram estrutura mesoporosa no material. A área de superfície específica variou de 73,2 m2/g no scaffold 58S tratado a 800 °C até 331,2 m2/g no scaffold 100S tratado a 800 °C. O material não é tóxico pelos ensaios MTT de citotoxicidade. Os resultados mostraram que é possível adicionar agentes porogênicos ao VB obtido via sol-gel e obter scaffolds favoráveis à regeneração tecidual óssea.

Abstract The use of biomaterials capable of generating a biological response has been one of the biggest progresses in regenerative medicine, due to their ability to support growth stimulation and damaged tissue regeneration. In this context, bioceramics, particularly bioactive glass (BG), were the subject of many studies. The technique of porogen agent addition for the synthesis of scaffolds is an interesting procedure, because several types of porogen agents can be used. The aim of the present work was to obtain scaffolds using four porogen agents and to evaluate the effects that a change in treatment temperature can have on their crystallinity. Scaffolds of sol-gel bioactive glass 100S (100% SiO2) using as porogen agents paraffin 1, paraffin 2, wax and CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) were synthesized and characterized. As the best results were obtained with paraffin 1, scaffolds 58S (60%SiO2-36%CaO-4%P2O5) and 100S using paraffin 1 as porogen agent were prepared. The scaffolds were submitted to different treatment temperatures to evaluate the effect on their crystallinity. Pore structure was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and micro-computed tomography. Scaffolds presented satisfactory pore size and pore size distribution, important characteristics for scaffolds because they allow cell migration, nutrient transport, vascularization and tissue ingrowth. X-ray powder diffraction showed the amorphous nature of the scaffolds. At 900 °C, scaffolds BG 58S and 100S showed a small increase in crystallinity. BET analysis (N2-adsorption) indicated a mesoporous structure. The specific surface area varied from 73.2 m2/g for scaffold 58S treated at 800 °C to 331.2 m2/g for scaffold 100S treated at 800 °C. The materials obtained showed no toxic effects by MTT cytotoxicity assays. Results showed that the development of scaffolds is possible using porogen agents, with 3D interconnected porous structure and might therefore be a potential biomaterial for bone tissue regeneration.

RESUMO A partir de coletas realizadas em plantios comerciais de mandioca (Manihot esculenta Crantz) em 11 municípios do Estado da Paraíba, obtiveram-se 27 isolados dos fungos Colletotrichum gloeosporoides f. sp. manihotis Henn (Penn.) e Fusarium oxysporum Schlent, fitopatogênicos à cultura. Desses isolados foi obtida a produção enzimática do complexo celulolítico, sob fermentação submersa à 120 rpm e 30 °C durante 7 dias, tendo CMC (Carboximetilcelulose) como fonte de carbono. As atividades enzimáticas foram quantificadas por meio do grau de hidrólise de tiras de papel de filtro (FPAse) e de CMC (CMCase). Utilizou-se a liberação de Paranitrofenol para quantificação das atividades da β-glucosidase (βG). As atividades mais elevadas observadas foram: 23,13 e 1,51 U/ml para FPAse e CMCase pelos isolados de C. gloeosporioides URM 7124 e 7125. Para βG, 0,0014 U/mL, pelo isolado 13.

ABSTRACT Material collected from commercial crops of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) in 11 municipalities in the state of Paraíba included 27 isolates of the fungi Colletotrichum gloeosporoides f. sp. manihotis Henn (Penn.) and Fusarium oxysporum Schlent., which are pathogenic to the culture. From these isolates, cellulolytic enzyme complex production was obtained under submerged fermentation at 120 rpm and 30 °C for 7 days, with CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) as carbon source. Enzyme activities were quantified by means of the degree of hydrolysis of strips of filter paper (FPAse) and CMC (CMCase). The release of Paranitrofenol was used to quantify the activities of β-glucosidase (βG). The highest activities were: 23.13 and 1.51 U/ml for FPase and CMCase by the isolates of C. gloeosporioides URM 7124 and 7125. For βG, 0.0014 U/ml by isolate 13.

RESUMO: Fibras têm sido estudadas como opção para reduzir a resposta glicêmica pós-prandial de cães, mas os resultados obtidos têm sido inconsistentes. A ingestão de amido, no entanto, não tem sido adequadamente considerada na interpretação dos resultados de algumas dessas pesquisas. O presente estudo investigou, em cães adultos não obesos, os efeitos da ingestão de amido e fibra sobre a resposta pós-prandial. Celulose (CEL), carboximetilcelulose (CMC), fibra de ervilha (PE) e fibra de cana-de-açúcar (SCF) foram combinadas, gerando seis dietas com 33% a 42% de amido: dietas SCF+CEL e PE+CEL com alta fibra insolúvel (IF=22%) e baixa fibra solúvel (SF=2,5%); dietas SCF+CMC e PE+CMC com alta fibra solúvel (SF=4,5%; IF=19%); dietas CMC e CEL como controles baixa fibra (14%). As dietas foram fornecidas aos cães em duas quantidades, resultando na ingestão de 9,5g ou 12,5g de amido (kg0,75)-1 dia-1, gerando um total de 12 tratamentos. Cada tratamento foi fornecido a seis cães, condicionados a ingerir todo o alimento do dia num período de 10min. A glicose plasmática foi medida em jejum e durante 480min após a refeição. Os resultados foram analisados por análise de variância de medidas repetidas, considerando-se os feitos da ingestão de amido e fibra, e suas interações, sendo as médias comparadas pelo teste de Tukey (P<0,05). A ingestão de fibra não alterou a resposta pós-prandial de glicose (P>0,05). O consumo da dose elevada de amido, no entanto, resultou em maiores glicemias aos 180 e 240min, maior glicemia máxima e maior área abaixo da curva de glicose (P<0,05). Verificou-se que a quantidade ingerida de amido é mais importante que o consumo de fibra para a resposta glicêmica pós-prandial de cães não obesos.

ABSTRACT: Fibre has been studied to reduce the postprandial glucose response of dogs, but the results are inconsistent. Starch intake, however, was not properly considered in the published studies. The effects of starch and fibre intake on the postprandial glucose response were studied in non-obese adult dogs. Cellulose (CEL), carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), pea fibre (PE) and sugarcane fibre (SCF) were combined to form six diets with starch contents ranging from 33% to 42%: SCF+CEL and PE+CEL diets, both with high insoluble fibre (IF=22%) and low soluble fibre (SF=2.5%) content; SCF+CMC and PE+CMC diets with high SF (SF=4.5%; IF=19%) content; and CMC and CEL diets with low dietary fibre (14%) content. The diets were fed in two amounts, providing an intake of 9.5g or 12.5g of starch (kg0.75)-1 day-1, totaling 12 treatments. Each diet was fed to six dogs conditioned to consume all of the daily food in 10min. Their plasma glucose levels were measured before and during 480min after food intake. Results of fibre and starch intake and their interactions were compared by repeated measures ANOVA and the Tukey test (P<0.05). Fibre intake did not change the glucose postprandial responses (P>0.05). High-dose starch intake, however, induced a higher glycaemia at 180 and 240min after the meal and a greater maximal glycaemia and greater area under the glucose curve (P<0.05). A range in insoluble and soluble fibre intake does not change postprandial glucose response, and the amount of starch intake is a main factor for the postprandial glucose response of healthy non-obese dogs.

A instabilidade postural na doença de Parkinson (DP) tem sido associada a uma diminuição do limite de estabilidade (LE) na direção ântero-posterior (AP). Entretanto, ainda que possíveis alterações do LE na direção látero-lateral (LL) tenham sido sugeridas, tal direção não tem sido avaliada nos estudos com DP, principalmente quando o teste de limite de estabilidade (TLE) envolve movimentos intencionais que deslocam o centro de massa corporal (CMC). O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar o LE na postura de pé durante movimentos voluntários que promovem deslocamento do CMC nas direções AP e LL de indivíduos com e sem a DP. Doze indivíduos com DP (Hoehn & Yahr=II, III) e 12 sem a doença realizaram o TLE nos sentidos anterior, posterior, direito e esquerdo. A velocidade de movimento (VM), excursão máxima (EM) e o controle direcional (CD) do CMC foram avaliados em cada sentido. Os indivíduos com DP foram significativamente mais lentos em todos os sentidos de deslocamento do CMC (p<0,05). Não houve diferença significativa na EM e CD no sentido anterior entre os grupos (p>0,05). Por outro lado, a EM e CD do CMC foram menores para o grupo DP no sentido posterior (P) e na direção LL (p<0,05). Indivíduos leves a moderadamente afetados pela DP apresentaram redução do LE no sentido P e na direção LL quando comparados ao grupo controle. Os resultados sugerem que tal direção e sentido devam ser treinados em ortostatismo, com movimentos que deslocam voluntariamente o CMC, desde fases iniciais da DP.

Postural instability in Parkinson's disease (PD) has been associated with decreases of the limits of stability (LOS) in the anterior-posterior (AP) directions. Although LOS changes in the latero-lateral (LL) directions have been suggested, they have not been evaluated in studies with PD, especially when the LOS tests involve intentional displacements of the body center of mass (COM). The aim of this study was to investigate the LOS in standing posture during voluntary movements that promote movement of the COM in AP and LL directions of individuals with and without PD. Twelve subjects with PD (Hoehn & Yahr stages of II and III) and 12 without the disease performed the LOS tests in the anterior, posterior, right and left directions. The movement velocity (MV), maximum excursion (ME), and directional control (DC) of the COM were evaluated in all investigated directions. Individuals with PD demonstrated smaller COM displacements in all directions (p<0.05). There were no significant differences between the groups regarding the ME and DC in the anterior direction (p>0.05). However, the ME and DC of the COM were smaller for the PD group in the backward, right, and left directions (p<0.05). Individuals with mild to moderate PD demonstrated decreases in the LOS in the posterior and LL directions, when compared to individuals without the disease. These findings suggested that such directions should be trained in the standing position with voluntary movements of the COM from the early stages of PD.

Objetivou-se avaliar a regulação do acesso à saúde e o processo de trabalho do enfermeiro na administração das Centrais de Marcação de Consultas Municipais-CMC, da 2ª Microrregional de Saúde do Ceará. Estudo documental, descritivo e de avaliação. Na coleta dos dados, utilizaram-se observação, entrevista e análise de documentos no período de fevereiro a agosto de 2007. Foram avaliados dez municípios e entrevistadas seis enfermeiras que exerciam a função de coordenação da regulação do acesso. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética da Universidade Federal do Ceará/UFC/nº25. Quanto ao padrão "liderança organizacional", a avaliação indicou que seis CMC estavam sob direção técnica de profissional habilitado. Entretanto, as enfermeiras acumulavam diversas funções, sendo identificada falha na avaliação de produção e gastos planejados. Conclui-se que, para garantir a regulação do acesso, faz-se necessária melhoria na qualidade da coordenação desses serviços, sendo o profissional enfermeiro uma boa opção para o cargo.

We have aimed to evaluate the regulation of access to health and the working process of the nurse in the administration of the municipal headquarters of appointments setting - (Central de Consultas Municipais- CMC) at the 2nd Microregional of health of Ceará. This is a documental, descriptive and evaluative study. It was chosen for the collection of data the observation, interview and the analysis of documents. This process was held between February and August 2007. Ten districts have been evaluated and six nurses who were coordinators of the regulation access have also been interviewed. This study was submitted to the Ethic Committee of UFC/¹ 25. As for the standard "organizational leadership", the evaluation indicated that six CMCs are under technical direction of qualified professionals. Otherwise the nurses had many other functions. The failure in production evaluation and planned expenses has been detected. We have concluded that, in order to guarantee the evaluation of production, it´s necessary an improvement of quality of the coordination of these services, being the professional nurse a good option for the function.

El objetivo fue evaluar la regulación del acceso a la salud y el proceso de trabajo del enfermero en la administración de las Centrales de Marcación de Consultas Municipales-CMC, de la 2ª Micro regional de Salud de Ceará. Estudio documental, descriptivo y de evaluación. En la colecta de datos se utilizó la observación, entrevista y análisis de documentos; se realizó en el periodo de febrero a agosto de 2007. Se evaluaron diez municipios, siendo entrevistadas seis enfermeras, que ejercían la función de coordinación de la regulación del acceso. El estudio fue sometido al Comité de Ética de la UFC/nº25. En cuanto al modelo "liderazgo organizacional", la evaluación indicó que seis CMC están bajo dirección técnica de un profesional habilitado. Sin embargo, las enfermeras acumulaban diversas funciones Se identificaron errores en la evaluación de producción y gastos planificados. Se concluye que, para garantizar la regulación del acceso se hace necesaria una mejoría en la calidad de la coordinación de estos servicios, siendo el profesional enfermero una buena opción para el cargo.

OBJETIVOS: descrever os estados comportamentais dos recém-nascidos com peso inferior a 1500 g, em ventilação mecânica, antes, durante e após o cuidado mãe canguru (CMC). MÉTODOS: estudo do tipo quase experimental em que os estados comportamentais definidos como sono profundo, ativo, sonolência, alerta inativo, alerta ativo e choro de acordo com a Escala Neonatal de Brazelton foram avaliados em três momentos: 15 minutos antes do CMC, 30 minutos após o início da exposição e 15 minutos após o CMC num total de uma hora de exposição. Quarenta e quatro recém-nascidos pré-termo (poder estatístico >0,9), com idade gestacional média de 29 semanas e peso médio de 1096 g, intubados e estáveis do ponto de vista hemo-dinâmico, foram selecionados por amostra de entrada contínua. RESULTADOS: evidenciou-se o favorecimento do sono, principalmente o sono profundo (52,3%), comparado aos períodos antes (6,8%) e após (13,6%) (p<0,001) o CMC. Além disso, os recém-nascidos apresentaram sinais de dor após o CMC com diferença significativa (p=0,002). CONCLUSÕES: o cuidado mãe canguru, nas condições deste estudo, pode ser considerado como uma estratégia favorecedora para o desenvolvimento neurocomportamental.

OBJECTIVES: to describe the behavior of newborns weighing under 1500 g on mechanical ventilation, before and after kangaroo mother care (KMC). METHODS: a quasi-experimental type study in which behaviors such as deep sleep, activity, drowsiness, inactive alertness, active alertness, and crying as defined by the Brazelton Neonatal Scale were assessed on three separate occasions: 15 minutes before KMC, 30 after the beginning of KMC and 15 minutes after a total of one hour's KMC. Forty-four preterm newborns (statistical power > 0.9), with a mean gestational age of 29 weeks and mean weight of 1096 g, intubated and stable in terms of hemodynamics were selected by way of continuous entry sampling. RESULTS: the results provided evidence that KMC improves babies' sleep, especially deep sleep (52.3%), compared to the period prior to (6.8%) and after (13.6%) (p<0.001) KMC. Apart from this, the newborns showed signs of pain after KMC, with a significant difference (p=0.002). CONCLUSIONS: kangaroo mother care, under the conditions studied, may be considered a beneficial strategy for neuro-behavioral development.

Em meios para crescimento de plantas deficientes em cargas negativas, o potássio (K) é facilmente lixiviado com conseqü ências adversas quanto a sua disponibilidade para as plantas e para o meio ambiente, uma vez que todos os fertilizantes a base de K são completamente solúveis. O objetivo deste estudo foi preparar filmes a partir da carboximetilcelulose de sódio (CMC), alginato de sódio (AS) e da mistura 1:1 (v/v) CMC:AS para incorporação de K e investigar a sua posterior liberação. As propriedades do filmes foram avaliadas considerando a miscibilidade, a temperatura de transição vítrea, morfologia e permeação de potássio. A ausência de interações fortes, a pequena variação na temperatura de transição vítrea e a rugosidade detectada nas micrografias da secção transversal em filmes da mistura CMC:AS (1:1), indicaram miscibilidade parcial entre os componentes. Como conseqü ência das características acima mencionadas, a liberação de potássio foi maior em filmes da mistura CMC:AS (1:1) e menor para a AS. O mecanismo de liberação de K da mistura CMC:AS (1:1) foi controlada por um processo de difusão, no entanto, efeitos associados ao intumescimento e erosão da matriz, foram observados para os sistemas CMC e AS puros. Filmes de CMC, AS e a mistura (1:1) foram capazes de reduzir a velocidade de liberação de K, podendo trazer benefícios consideráveis em termos do crescimento das plantas quando são utilizados meios deficientes em cargas negativas.

In plant growth media of low negative charge, potassium (K) is leached out easily with adverse consequences on its availability to plants and on the environment, since all K fertilizers are completely soluble. The objective of this study was to prepare films based on sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), sodium alginate (SA) and a 1:1 (v/v) CMC:SA mixture to incorporate K and investigate its subsequent release. The film properties were evaluated considering miscibility, glass transition temperature, morphology and permeation of potassium. The absence of strong interactions, the small variation in the glass transition temperature and the roughness detected in the cross-section micrographs of the 1:1 CMC:SA mixtures, indicated a partial miscibility among the components. As a consequence of the above-mentioned characteristics, film release of potassium was highest for the 1:1 CMC:SA mixture and lowest for SA. The release mechanism of K from the 1:1 CMC:SA mixture was controlled by a diffusion process, however, associated effects due to swelling and erosion of the matrix films, were observed for the pure CMC and SA systems. Films of CMC, SA and their 1:1 mixture were able to delay the K release, which can bring considerable benefits in terms of plant growth when media with low negative charges are used.

The present study reports a snakebite in a horse in the state of Pará, Brazil. At initial evaluation the animal was reluctant to walk and had tachycardia, tachypnea, severe lameness, bleeding on the pastern and swelling around the left hind leg. Blood samples from the bleeding sites, took on the first day, showed leukocytosis and neutrophilia, whereas biochemical values of urea and creatinine were significantly increased. The chosen treatment was snake antivenom, fluid therapy, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents and diuretic drugs. On the fourth day of therapy, the hematological values were within normal parameters. There was improvement related to the clinical lameness and swelling of the limb. However, a decrease in water intake and oliguria were observed. On the seventh day the animal died. Necropsy revealed areas of hemorrhagic edema in the left hind limb and ventral abdomen; the kidneys presented equimosis in the capsule, and when cut they were wet. Moreover, the cortex was pale, slightly yellow and the medullary striae had the same aspect. Based on these data, we concluded that the snakebite in the present study was caused by Bothrops spp. and that renal failure contributed to death.

O beneficiamento dos minérios fosfáticos com ganga silicatada e carbonatada é estritamente necessário para aumentar a produção de concentrados fosfáticos e para suprir a demanda nacional de fertilizantes. Visando a processar esses minérios, esse trabalho estudou, através de testes de microflotação e medidas de potencial zeta, o efeito do oleato de sódio, do amido de milho e da carboximetilcelulose (CMC) na superfície dos minerais puros originários do minério sílico-carbonatado de Catalão/GO. Os resultados obtidos mostraram a possibilidade de separação seletiva da apatita, por flotação direta em pH igual a 9, usando-se oleato de sódio como coletor, na ausência de depressores, o que seria inviável industrialmente. Tanto a CMC como o amido deprimem a dolomita, mas não são seletivos, pois deprimem, também, a apatita. O amido apresenta ação depressora sobre a apatita mais forte que a CMC.

The processing of phosphate ores containing silicates and carbonates in the gangue is strictly necessary to increase phosphate rock production to meet the Brazilian demand for fertilizers. Aiming at the processing of these ores, this investigation addressed, via microfl otation and zeta potential determinations, the effect of sodium oleate, corn starch and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) on the surfaces of pure minerals from the Catalão/GO silicate-carbonate deposit. The results suggested the possibility of selective apatite concentration via direct fl otation at pH = 9, using sodium oleate as collector, in the absence of depressants; a route that would be industrially unfeasible. Both, CMC and starch, act as dolomite depressants, but the action is not selective, for apatite is also depressed by these reagents. Starch is a stronger apatite depressant than CMC.
