ABSTRACT Pregnancy toxemia has a high mortality rate and few cases with effective treatment are reported, especially when associated with secondary diseases. Therefore, the present work reports the case of a sheep, which was referred to the veterinary hospital of UFMG, in the last month of pregnancy, presenting apathy, hyporexia and sternal recumbency. After the diagnosis of pregnancy toxemia, the fetuses were removed while still alive, but did not survive. Monitoring was started with blood gas analysis, blood glucose assessments and laboratory tests. The results were consistent with liver damage, which was justified by the condition of lipolysis. Treatment consisted of electrolyte replacement plus 50% glucose and potassium chloride, along with administration of antibiotics (ceftiofur, 5mg/kg/SID/IM/7 days), flunixim meglumine (2.2mg/kg/SID/IM first day and 1.1mg/kg/SID/IM on the second and third days) and omeprazole (4mg/kg/SID/oral). The patient had secondarily clinical laminitis, which was treated with cryotherapy and anti-inflammatory drugs, in addition to mastitis, using a single dose of intramammary antibiotics. The work demonstrated the effectiveness of the treatment of pregnancy toxemia, when performed early and intensively, associated with daily clinical and laboratory monitoring of the animal.

RESUMO A toxemia da prenhez possui alto índice de mortalidade, e poucos casos com tratamento eficaz são relatados, principalmente quando associados a doenças secundárias. Diante disso, o presente trabalho relata o caso de uma ovelha, que foi encaminhada ao hospital veterinário da UFMG, no último mês de gestação, apresentando apatia, hiporexia e decúbito esternal. Após o diagnóstico de toxemia da prenhez, os fetos foram retirados ainda vivos, porém não sobreviveram. Iniciou-se um monitoramento com análises hemogasométricas, avaliações de glicemia e exames laboratoriais. Os resultados foram condizentes com lesão hepática, a qual foi justificada pelo quadro de lipólise. O tratamento consistiu em reposição hidroeletrolítica associada à glicose 50% e a cloreto de potássio, juntamente com administração de antibióticos (ceftiofur, 5mg/kg/SID/IM/7 dias), flunixim meglumine (2,2mg/kg/SID/IM no primeiro dia e 1,1mg/kg/SID/IM no segundo e terceiro dias) e omeprazol (4mg/kg/SID/oral). A paciente apresentou secundariamente laminite clínica, a qual foi tratada com crioterapia e antinflamatórios, além de um quadro de mastite, sendo utilizado antibiótico intramamário em dose única. O trabalho demonstrou a eficácia do tratamento da toxemia da prenhez, quando realizado de forma precoce e intensiva, associado a um monitoramento clínico e laboratorial diário do animal.

Brain glucose hypometabolism and neuroinflammation are early pathogenic manifestations in neurological disorders. Neuroinflammation may also disrupt leptin signaling, an adipokine that centrally regulates appetite and energy balance by acting on the hypothalamus and exerting neuroprotection in the hippocampus. The Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat is a non-obese type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) animal model used to investigate diabetes-associated molecular mechanisms without obesity jeopardizing effects. Wistar and GK rats received the maintenance adult rodent diet. Also, an additional control group of Wistar rats received a high-fat and high-sugar diet (HFHS) provided by free consumption of condensed milk. All diets and water were provided ad libitum for eight weeks. Brain glucose uptake was evaluated by 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-D-glucose under basal (saline administration) or stimulated (CL316,243, a selective β3-AR agonist) conditions. The animals were fasted for 10-12 h, anesthetized, and euthanized. The brain was quickly dissected, and the hippocampal area was sectioned and stored at -80°C in different tubes for protein and RNA analyses on the same animal. GK rats exhibited attenuated brain glucose uptake compared to Wistar animals and the HFHS group under basal conditions. Also, the hippocampus of GK rats displayed upregulated leptin receptor, IL-1β, and IL-6 gene expression and IL-1β and the subunit of the transcription factor NF-κB (p-p65) protein expression. No significant alterations were detected in the hippocampus of HFHS rats. Our data indicated that a genetic predisposition to T2DM has significant brain deteriorating features, including brain glucose hypometabolism, neuroinflammation, and leptin signaling disruption in the hippocampal area.

Abstract The antiulcer mechanisms of the dry extract of T. erecta flowers (DETe) were studied here. The acute ulcers induced by acidified ethanol or indomethacin were reproduced in mice pretreated with DETe (3 - 300 mg/kg). The antiulcer activity of DETe was also verified in mice pretreated with NEM, L-NAME, indomethacin, or yohimbine. The antisecretory effect of DETe was verified in rats, and its anti-Helicobacter pylori activity was determined in vitro. DETe (300 mg/kg, p.o) reduced the ethanol- or indomethacin-induced ulcer by 49 and 93%, respectively. The pre-treatment with L-NAME, NEM or yohimbine abolished the gastroprotective effect of DETe. However, DETe did not change the volume, acidity, or peptic activity in rats and did not affect H. pylori. This study expands knowledge about the antiulcerogenic potential of DETe, evidencing the role of nitric oxide, non-protein sulfhydryl groups, α2 adrenergic receptors, and prostaglandins, but not antisecretory or anti-H. pylori properties.

ABSTRACT It is essential to determine the productive potential and quality of forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) silages using alternative and organic inputs, such as poultry litter (PL), intending to higher efficiency, and sustainable development of animal production systems in the world. Poultry litter fertilization has been widely used in crops for silage production, where it is believed that fertilization with PL can influence the fermentation profile and composition of forage sorghum silages. The objective of this study was to evaluate different levels of fertilization with PL on the agronomic and quality characteristics of forage sorghum silage ‘BRS Ponta Negra’. For determination of agronomic and productive characteristics, randomized blocks design was adopted, the treatments were different PL levels: 5, 10, and 15 Mg ha-1. While for the evaluation of silage characteristics, the design was completely randomized. With fertilizer doses, a linear increase was observed for plant height, stem diameter, leaf length, and consequently for fresh and DM productions. Linear reduction was observed for neutral detergent fiber, while crude protein and pH contents of silages increased linearly with PL levels. Quadratic effect occurred for gas and effluent losses. Poultry litter may be an alternative source to supply the N needs in the production of sorghum for silage under experimental similar conditions. Associating productivity with cultivation efficiency, the PL level 13.46 Mg ha-1 is recommended for presenting the highest N agronomic efficiency and good nutritional quality of the silage.

RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou investigar os efeitos de uma formulação em gel da associação da Plectranthus neochilus e da Cnidoscolus quercifolius no processo de reparação tecidual em feridas cutâneas de ratos. Foi induzida uma ferida cirúrgica em 35 ratos Wistar, sendo tratadas de acordo com os grupos: G1 - fitoterápico comercial; G2 - gel de carbopol 1%; G3, G4 e G5 - formulação gel boldo-gambá mais favela (FGBF) 2,5%, 5% e 10%, respectivamente. Aplicou-se 1mL do produto, via tópica, diariamente, durante 14 dias. Na avaliação macroscópica das feridas, verificou-se inflamação, granulação e epitelização em todos os grupos. O grupo FGBF 2,5% apresentou maior potencial angiogênico. Houve diferença significativa entre as áreas cirúrgicas das feridas tratadas com os FGBF 2,5%, 5% ou 10%, comparados ao grupo com o gel fitoterápico comercial. Na histomorfometria da pele, observou-se reepitelização da epiderme e da derme superficial, fibras colágenas longitudinais, fibroblastos e vasos sanguíneos e, na derme profunda, fibroblastos, fibras colágenas transversais e longitudinais, vasos sanguíneos e células inflamatórias. A formulação a 2,5% teve o maior aumento na proliferação de fibroblastos e mais intensa colagenização no dia 14 de tratamento.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a gel formulation from the association of Plectranthus neochilus and Cnidoscolus quercifolius on tissue repair in cutaneous wounds in rats. A surgical wound was induced in 35 Wistar rats and treated according to group: G1 - commercial phytotherapeutic gel; G2 - Carbopol gel 1%; G3, 4, 5 - gel formulation from Boldo-gambá and Favela (FGBF) at 2.5%, 5%, and 10%, respectively. 1ml of the product was applied topically daily, for 14 days. Macroscopic evaluation of the wound showed inflammation, granulation, and epithelization in all groups. The FGBF 2.5% group showed greater angiogenic potential. There was a significant difference between the surgical area of the wounds treated with FGBF 2.5%, 5%, or 10% compared to the group with the commercial phytotherapeutic gel. On histomorphometry of the skin, there were reepithelization of the epidermis and superficial dermis, longitudinal collagen fibers, fibroblasts, and blood vessels, and in the deeper dermis, fibroblasts, transverse and longitudinal collagen fibers, blood vessels, and inflammatory cells. The 2.5% formulation had the greatest increase in fibroblast proliferation and most intense collagenization on day 14 of treatment.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito dos métodos e das intensidades de pastejo no perfil metabólico de cordeiros. Este estudo foi realizado em Eldorado do Sul (RS). Os tratamentos consistiram em duas intensidades de pastejo (moderada e baixa), com métodos lotação rotativa e lotação contínua. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial com quatro repetições. Para avaliar as condições metabólicas e nutricionais dos cordeiros, foram coletadas amostras de sangue para avaliar fósforo, albumina, glicose, magnésio, globulina, cortisol, ureia e proteínas totais. O maior valor de ureia no sangue foi observado no mês de setembro nos cordeiros mantidos em pastejo contínuo. Não houve diferença estatística entre as intensidades de pastejo e os métodos de pastejo para albumina, glicose, magnésio, globulina, cortisol e níveis de proteína total nos cordeiros perfilados. Os valores de cortisol sugeriram que os animais não foram submetidos a altos níveis de estresse. Concluindo, a criação de cordeiros em azevém, independentemente dos métodos ou das intensidades de pastejo, permitiu a manutenção da homeostase corporal e não causou desequilíbrios metabólicos, desequilíbrios nutricionais ou estresse.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of grazing methods and intensities on the metabolic profile of lambs grazing ryegrass. This study was performed in Eldorado do Sul (RS). The treatments consisted of two grazing intensities with rotational and continuous stocking methods: moderate and low. The experimental design was a randomized block arranged in a factorial scheme with four replicates. To evaluate the metabolic and nutritional conditions of the lambs, blood samples were collected to evaluate phosphorus, albumin, glucose, magnesium, globulin, cortisol, urea and total proteins. The highest blood urea value was observed in the month of September in lambs kept in continuous method grazing. There was no statistical difference between the grazing intensities and grazing methods for albumin, glucose, magnesium, globulin, cortisol and total protein levels in profile lambs. The cortisol values suggested that the animals were not subjected to high stress levels. In conclusion, rearing female lambs on ryegrass, irrespective of grazing methods or intensities, allowed the maintenance of body homeostasis and did not cause any metabolic unbalances, nutritional unbalances or stress.

RESUMO Este estudo teve por objetivo comparar variações de parâmetros andrológicos e comportamentais de touros Nelore de diferentes faixas etárias, calcular seu potencial reprodutivo (PR) e propor uma nova tabela de classificação por pontos, de acordo com as médias atualmente alcançadas por eles nas características estudadas. Foram utilizados dados de 6162 exames andrológicos de touros da raça Nelore, entre 12 e 80 meses de idade, em regime de monta natural. O número de touros classificados como aptos consistiu em 88,9% dos animais avaliados (n=5480), sendo 51,6% desses considerados excelentes (n=2827), 41,2% muito bons (n=2257) e 7,2% considerados bons (n=394). Entre os animais questionáveis (n=682; 11,1%), 79,6% foram classificados como inaptos temporários (n=542) e 20,4% (n=139) como animais descarte, de acordo com o exame andrológico, independentemente do teste da libido. O número de touros classificados como excelentes se reduziu para 752 (12,2%) quando dados de comportamento sexual foram incluídos para definição do seu PR. Concluiu-se que o uso de tabelas de classificação andrológica por pontos com atualizações técnicas beneficia a seleção mais apurada de touros Nelore. O teste da libido é ferramenta importante para a determinação do PR, o qual permite melhor aproveitamento dos reprodutores.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to compare variations of andrological and behavioral parameters from Nelore bulls of different ages, to calculate their reproductive potential (RP) and propose a new classification table by points, considering current averages in each reproductive trait studied. Data were collected from 6162 breeding soundness examinations of Nelore bulls aged between 12 and 80 months, under natural mating. According to andrological parameters, regardless of the libido test, the number of bulls classified as approved was 88.9% (n= 5480), being 51.6% considered as excellent (n= 2827), 41.2% very good (n= 2257) and 7.2% considered as good (n= 394). Among the animals considered as questionable (n= 682; 11.1%), 79.6% were classified as temporarily reproved (n= 542) and 20.4% (n= 139) as discarded animals. The number of bulls classified as excellent decreased to 752 (12.2%) when sexual behavior data were included to define their RP. It was concluded that the use of tables for andrological classification by points with technical updates improves the reproductive selection of Nelore bulls. The libido test is an important tool for RP determination which provides better utilization of the sires.

RESUMO A biópsia embrionária associada à genotipagem permite a obtenção de informações genômicas antes mesmo da transferência dos embriões. Neste estudo, foram avaliadas amostras biopsiadas de blastocistos bovinos transferidos para receptoras (n=47), sob a hipótese de que a raça (Gir ou Girolando), o estádio embrionário (blastocisto ou blastocisto expandido) e a competência para estabelecimento de prenhez (positiva ou negativa) afetariam a quantidade e a qualidade do DNA da amostra obtida. O DNA foi extraído, amplificado, quantificado por eletroferograma e genotipado. O parâmetro call rate (CR) foi adotado para mensurar a qualidade da genotipagem. Obteve-se concentração de DNA de 86,07±171,66ng/µL e CR 0,73±0,17. O CR não variou em função da quantidade de DNA nas amostras. As variáveis raça e estádio embrionário não influenciaram a concentração de DNA, nem o CR. Houve efeito da prenhez sobre o CR (P=0,0187), mas, como houve maior CR nas amostras provenientes do grupo prenhez negativa, não foi possível associar esse parâmetro à qualidade embrionária. Concluiu-se que a raça e a qualidade embrionária não afetam os parâmetros aqui estudados em amostras embrionárias, ou seja, embriões com maiores chances de implantação não refletem alta qualidade nas amostras de biópsia genotipadas.

ABSTRACT Embryo biopsy associated with genotyping allows genomic information before embryo transfer. In this study, blastocyst biopsy samples from embryos transferred to recipients (n= 47) were evaluated, under the hypothesis that breed (Gyr or Girolando), embryonic stage (blastocyst or expanded blastocyst) and competence to establish pregnancy (positive or negative) would affect the quantity and DNA quality of samples. DNA was extracted, amplified, quantified by electropherogram and genotyped. The parameter call rate (CR) was used to measure the quality of genotyping. DNA concentration of 86.07±171.66ng/μl, and CR 0.73±0.17 was obtained. CR did not vary according to the amount of DNA in the samples. The variables breed and embryonic stage had no influence on DNA concentration or CR. There was pregnancy effect on the CR (P= 0.0187), but since there was a higher CR in the samples from the negative pregnancy group, it was not possible to associate this parameter with the embryonic quality. We conclude that the breed and embryo quality do not affect the evaluated parameters in embryonic samples. Embryos with higher chances of implantation do not reflect high quality in embryo biopsy genotyped samples.

This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, fractionation of nitrogen compounds and carbohydrates, digestibility parameters, gas production kinetics and ruminal fermentation of fruit seed cakes. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three fruit seed cakes (treatments) and four replications. The cakes were made of seeds of custard apple (Annona squamosa), soursop (Annona muricata) and passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), which were collected in a biodiesel plant. The passion fruit seed cake presented the highest content of dry matter, neutral detergent fibre crude protein (NDFcp), acid detergent fibre (ADF), lignin and total carbohydrates (P<0.05). The custard apple seed cake presented high proportions of crude protein, condensed tannins and digestible energy (P<0.05). The soursop seed cake presented higher values for ether extract and total digestible nutrients (P<0.05). For potential degradability, the authors detected a difference between the custard apple, soursop and passion fruit seed cakes. The total volume of gases was higher for custard apple and soursop seed cakes. Custard apple seed cake presented higher proportions of in vitro degradation parameters (P<0.05). Thus this cake could provide greater nutrient levels when supplied in ruminant diets, followed by soursop seed cake and passion fruit seed cake.

ABSTRACT It was determined by the total collection of excreta method, with broilers from 22 to 32 days of age, the coefficients of apparent metabolism of dry matter, crude protein and crude energy and apparent metabolizable energy corrected for zero nitrogen balance (AMEn) of the ethanol co-products of corn: acid oil and dried distillery grains with soluble (DDGS). The DDGS and corn acid oil presented nutritional metabolization coefficients ranging from 43 to 83% and AMEn equal 2393.5 and 7859.2kcal/kg respectively, and may be food alternatives to soybean meal and soybean oil.

RESUMO O objetivo do presente experimento foi avaliar efeito do estresse e da dificuldade de inseminação (DifIA) sobre a taxa de concepção (TC) de vacas (n=93) e novilhas (n= 72) Nelore submetidas à IATF. No D9, anotou-se nota de temperamento (NTe) e tempo da saída do brete (TSB) de todos os animais e coletou-se sangue das novilhas. No dia da IATF (D11), anotou-se NTe, TSB, DifIA e tempo de IA. A TC foi 36% para vacas e 46% para novilhas (P>0,05). Não foi observado efeito de Nte sobre TC (P>0,05). Porém, houve tendência para maior (P<0,10) TC nos animais que não apresentaram dificuldade de inseminação (DifIA1; TP=42%) em comparação aos animais com moderada ou alta dificuldade (DifIA2+DifIA3; TP=27%). Foi observado menor (P<0,05) tempo de IA para animais DifIA1 (17:31±06:02s) que animais DifIA2-3 (30:10±15:45s). Novilhas com maiores (P<0,05) níveis de cortisol apresentaram maior NTe (P<0,05). Entretanto, TC (59%) das novilhas menos reativas (cortisol=4,12±1,12ng/mL; NTe=3,2±0,6) não diferiu da TC (41%; P>0,05) das mais agitadas (cortisol=7,76±1,33ng/mL; NTe=3,82±0,79). Concluiu-se que avaliações de temperamento se relacionaram com nível de estresse, embora esses parâmetros não tenham afetado a TC deste trabalho. A maior dificuldade e/ou tempo necessário para se completar a IA demonstrou ser um potencial fator para a redução da fertilidade na IATF.

ABSTRACT The objective was to evaluate the influence of stress and difficulty of insemination (DifIA) on conception rate (CR) of Nellore cows (n= 93) and heifers (n= 72) in Timed-AI. On D9, temperament (NTe) and time for chute exit (TSB) were recorded for all animals, and blood samples were colected from heifers. On the day of Timed-AI (D11), NTe, TSB, DifIA and time for AI were recorded. For cows, CR was 36% and for heifers 46% (P> 0.05). No effect (P> 0.05) of NTe was observed on CR. However, a tendency (P< 0,10) for higher CR was observed in animals with no difficulty for insemination (DifIA1; CR=42%) compared to animals that presented moderate or high difficulty (DifIA2+DifIA3, CR=27%). Time required for AI was lower (P< 0.05) in animals DifIA1 (17:31±06:02sec) than in animals DifIA2-3 (30:10±15:45sec). Heifers with greater (P< 0.05) cortisol levels presented higher Nte (P< 0.05). However, CR (59%) of less reactive heifers (cortisol=4,12±1,12ng/mL; NTe=3,2±0,6) did not differ from CR (41%; P> 0.05) of stressed animals (cortisol=7,76±1,33ng/mL; NTe=3,82±0,79). It was concluded that assessments of temperament were related to stress level, although these parameters did not affect the CR of this study. However, the higher difficulty and/or time to complete AI showed to be a potential factor for reducing fertility after timed-AI.

Abstract: Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a technique that combines chemotherapy with local application of specific electric pulses with the aim of increasing the permeability of the plasma membrane in a reversible way, improving the influx of chemotherapeutic drugs into the cytoplasm and potentiating their cytotoxic effects. This technique has broadened the range of possible treatments for oncological patients, either on its own or as adjuvant to surgical procedures. It is especially useful in tumors located in regions with only a small surgical safety margin, such as the limb extremities, skull, oral cavity, neck and perianal region, among others. ECT makes it feasible to perform procedures more conservatively, or even to perform otherwise infeasible procedures, by expanding the margins without removing healthy tissues. The objective of this paper is to provide a brief bibliographic review of the principles, applications and future possibilities of electrochemotherapy, helping to disseminate pertinent information about this relatively new technique for the treatment of cancer.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produção de forragem e o potencial de utilização do capim faixa-branca submetido a frequências de desfolhação. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de quatro frequências de desfolhação: muito alta (25cm), alta (35cm), média (45cm) e baixa (55cm), avaliados em duas épocas do ano (maior e menor insolação), entre 2015 e 2016. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições e medidas repetidas no tempo. A produção diária de folhas foi menor na frequência muito alta em relação às outras frequências. A redução das frequências de desfolhação aumentou a produção diária de colmo, senescência diária de folhas, produção total diária e acúmulo líquido diário de forragem e diminuiu o potencial de utilização da forragem. No período de maior insolação, a produção diária de colmos, o acúmulo líquido diário de forragem e o potencial de utilização de forragem foram maiores e a senescência diária de folhas foi menor. A frequência de desfolhação muito alta não proporcionou um bom desenvolvimento da planta, enquanto a frequência baixa apresentou elevada produção de colmos. As frequências de desfolhação alta e média são mais indicadas para a desfolhação do capim faixa-branca, promovendo uma melhor proporção de folhas em relação a colmos.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the production of forage and the potential of utilization of digit grass subjected to four defoliation frequencies: very high (25cm), high (35cm), medium (45cm), and low (55cm), evaluated at two times of the year (higher and lower insolation), from January 2015 to January 2016. A randomized-block design with four replicates was adopted and measures repeated over time. The daily production of leaves was lower at the very high frequency in relation to the other frequencies. The reduction in defoliation frequency increased the daily production of stems, the daily leaf senescence, the total daily forage production, and the daily forage accumulation, and decreased the potential of forage utilization. At the time of higher insolation, the daily production of stems, the daily forage accumulation, the potential of utilization of forage were higher, and the daily leaf senescence was lower. The very high frequency of defoliation did not provide a good development of the plan, while the lower frequency displayed a high production of stems. The high and medium frequencies of defoliation are more indicated to the defoliation of digit grass, enabling a better proportion of leaves in relation to stems.

The study aimed to evaluate the effects of citric acid supplementation on the performance and the gene expression in the duodenum of Japanese quail. Genes related to antioxidant activity: superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase 7 (GPX7); and genes related to nutrient uptake in the enterocytes' apical membrane: sodium-glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1, responsible for the glucose absorption), glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) and B0AT1 (responsible for the absorption of neutral amino acids in brush board membrane) were evaluated. For this, 270 laying quails (Coturnix japonica) were fed a diet supplemented with 0%, 0.6% or 1.2% of citric acid. Gene expression was evaluated by the quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) at 35 days old (n = 5). The highest expression of the SGLT1 gene was observed in quails fed the 1.2% citric acid supplemented diet (0.120 AU). Birds fed diets with both levels of citric acid supplementation showed a higher B0AT1 gene expression than quails fed no citric acid. Quails fed the 1.2% of citric acid supplemented diet had the lowest SOD gene expression (0.3455 AU). The birds receiving the diets supplemented with citric acid showed a lower GPX7 gene expression than the quails fed the 0% citric acid diet. These results suggests that the effect of citric acid on gene expression in the digestive tract may have contributed to the greater weight gain and lower feed intake observed in birds fed diets supplemented with citric acid.

RESUMO: O órgão vomeronasal é um receptor químico capaz de detectar feromônios e por essa razão está envolvido nos comportamentos reprodutivos, sociais e de defesa. A reprodução de pacas tem se destacado na área de comercialização de carne e para fins conservacionistas e de pesquisa, como modelo experimental. Diante da necessidade do detalhamento da morfologia do sistema olfatório secundário, o sistema vomeronasal, foi descrita a anatomia macroscópica, anatomia microscópica e topografia do órgão vomeronasal (OVN) da paca (Cuniculus paca). Foram utilizadas cinco pacas adultas do Setor de Animais Silvestres da FCAV, UNESP, Jaboticabal-SP. Após a eutanásia dos animais, a solução fixadora de formaldeído 10% em tampão fosfato de sódio (PBS) foi perfundida sistemicamente (via aorta ascendente). Mediante dissecação, o OVN foi localizado e individualizado para a descrição topográfica e anatômica. Posteriormente, foi isolado e incluído em parafina plástica. Cortes de cinco micrômetros foram corados com Hematoxilina-Eosina. O OVN encontra-se no assoalho da cavidade nasal em ambos os lados da base do septo nasal e está relacionado com o osso vômer, processos palatinos dos ossos pré-maxilar e maxilar. Rostralmente, comunica-se com a cavidade oral estabelecendo relação com a papila incisiva. É um órgão par com superfície irregular, levemente elíptico em secção transversal, apresentando coloração amarronzada repleta de vasos sanguíneos. À microscopia de luz, notou-se presença da cartilagem vomeronasal. O órgão é revestido por um epitélio não sensorial e neurossensorial.

ABSTRACT: The vomeronasal organ is a chemical receptor capable of detecting pheromones and for this reason is involved in reproductive, social and defense behaviors. The breeding of pacas has been highlighted in commercialization of meat and for conservation and research purposes, as an experimental model. Regarding the necessity of detailing the morphology of the secondary olfactory system, the vomeronasal system, the macroscopic anatomy, microscopic anatomy and topography of the vomeronasal organ (OVN) was described. Five adult pacas, from the wild animal Sector at FCAV, Unesp, Jaboticabal, SP were used. After the euthanasia, it was perfused 10% formaldehyde solution by ascendent aorta. The OVN was dissected for topographic and anatomical descriptions. Then, it was included in plastic paraffin. Five micrometres sections were collected and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The OVN is located on the floor of the nasal cavity in both sides of the base of nasal septum and it was related to the vomer, palatine process of the premaxilar and maxilar bones. In rostral aspect, it has a communication with the oral cavity and with the incisive papilla. It is a paired organ with irregular surface. In transversal section is slight elliptical with brownish colour similar to a sponge full of blood vessels. By light microscopy, it was observed the vomeronasal cartilage. The organ is covered with non-sensorial and neurossensorial epithelia.
