The formation of a stable and adherent oxide layer on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy can improve the mechanical and corrosion resistance of this material. This work studied the creep behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy after two different thermal oxidation conditions: at 650 °C for 12 h and at 800 °C for 2 h. In the XRD analysis of the oxidized samples, it was possible to observe the formation of rutile (TiO2) and a displacement of the peaks of α and β phases caused by the dissolution of oxygen. In the creep test at 550 °C, the material oxidized at 800 °C for 2 h showed a greater creep life at 125 MPa, the crack took longer to brake probably due to the greater thickness of the layer. At 550°C and 187.5 MPa the material oxidized at 650 °C for 12h has a better creep life, probably due to the layer more adhered.

Abstract The antiulcer mechanisms of the dry extract of T. erecta flowers (DETe) were studied here. The acute ulcers induced by acidified ethanol or indomethacin were reproduced in mice pretreated with DETe (3 - 300 mg/kg). The antiulcer activity of DETe was also verified in mice pretreated with NEM, L-NAME, indomethacin, or yohimbine. The antisecretory effect of DETe was verified in rats, and its anti-Helicobacter pylori activity was determined in vitro. DETe (300 mg/kg, p.o) reduced the ethanol- or indomethacin-induced ulcer by 49 and 93%, respectively. The pre-treatment with L-NAME, NEM or yohimbine abolished the gastroprotective effect of DETe. However, DETe did not change the volume, acidity, or peptic activity in rats and did not affect H. pylori. This study expands knowledge about the antiulcerogenic potential of DETe, evidencing the role of nitric oxide, non-protein sulfhydryl groups, α2 adrenergic receptors, and prostaglandins, but not antisecretory or anti-H. pylori properties.

The objective of this research was the sustainable development of pullulan and its structural and rheological characterization. In addition, the cultivation of the A. pullulans Y2092 strain by submerged fermentation on a laboratory scale was evaluated, valuing the use of industrial waste (residual brewery's yeast), RBY, and a low-cost renewable raw material VHP (very high polarization sugar). A 22 factorial statistical design of experiments was used to analyze the molecular weight of the pullulans produced. The maximum value of 1955 kDa was determined for the pullulan recovered after 96 h of fermentation in the mineral medium added with 70 g/L of VHP and 50 g/L of RBY. The FTIR analysis for the pullulan obtained was similar to the commercial pullulan. The rheological behavior of pullulan solutions is shown, evidencing the relationship between this property and Mw. The results from all analyses indicate that the pullulan obtained is suitable for the future production of biopolymeric films.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the acute toxicity of the essential oils (EOs) of Aloysia triphylla, Lippia gracilis and Piper aduncum in juvenile tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), and evaluate the possible histopathological alterations in their gills. For the acute toxicity tests, juvenile tambaqui (n=24/treatment) were distributed in six treatments with three replicates, which comprised the control and five EO concentrations of A. triphylla (60, 80, 100, 120 and 140 mg L-1), L. gracilis (35, 40, 45, 50 and 55 mg L-1) and P. aduncum (42.5, 45, 47.5, 50 and 52.5 mg L-1), with an exposure period of 4 h. The mortality rate and severity of damage to the tambaqui gills were proportional to the increase in the concentration of the EO, with LC50-4 h values estimated at 109.57 mg L -1 for A. triphylla, 41.63 mg L -1 for L. gracilis and 48.17 mg L -1 for P. aduncum. The main morphological damages observed in the gills of the tambaqui exposed to the three EOs, were Grade I: hypertrophy and hyperplasia of lamellar epithelial cells, lamellar fusion, epithelial detachment, capillary dilation and constriction, proliferation of chloride cells and mucosal cells and edema; in low frequency Grade II damage as epithelial rupture and lamellar aneurysm. Necrosis (Grade III damage) was observed only in gill lamellae exposed to P. aduncum EO (47.5, 50.0 and 52.5 mg L-1). Concentrations of EOs below LC50-4 h can be used sparingly, for short periods of exposure for the treatment of diseases in tambaqui breeding.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a toxicidade aguda dos óleos essenciais (OEs) de Aloysia triphylla, Lippia gracilis e Piper aduncum em juvenis de tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), e avaliar as possíveis alterações histopatológicas em suas brânquias. Para os testes de toxicidade aguda, juvenis de tambaqui (n=24/tratamento) foram distribuídos em 6 tratamentos, com três repetições, sendo o controle e cinco concentração do OE de A. triphylla (60, 80, 100, 120 e 140 mg L-1), L. gracilis (35, 40, 45, 50 e 55 mg L-1) e P. aduncum (42,5, 45, 47,5, 50 e 52,5 mg L-1), com exposição de 4 h. A taxa de mortalidade e a severidade dos danos nas brânquias de tambaqui foram proporcionais ao aumento da concentração do OE, com os valores de CL50-4 h estimados em 109,57 mg L-1 para A. triphylla, em 41,63 mg L-1 para L. gracilis e em 48,17 mg L-1 para P. aduncum. Os principais danos morfológicos observados nas brânquias de tambaqui, expostos aos três OEs, foram os de grau I: hipertrofia e hiperplasia das células do epitélio lamelar, fusão lamelar, descolamento epitelial, dilatação e constrição capilar, proliferação de células de cloreto e de células mucosas e edema; em baixa frequência os de grau II como ruptura epitelial e aneurisma lamelar. Necrose (dano de grau III) foi observado somente nas lamelas branquiais expostas ao OE de P. aduncum (47,5, 50,0 e 52,5 mg L-1). Concentrações do OEs abaixo dos valores de CL50-4 h podem ser utilizados com parcimônia, em curtos períodos de exposição para o tratamento de doenças na criação de tambaqui.

ABSTRACT Scarlet eggplant (Solanum aethiopicum var. gilo) is a Solanaceae with an appreciated peculiar bitter taste, which plays a significant role in family farming in Brazil. Fruit anthracnose is the main pre- and postharvest disease that affects scarlet eggplant in Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chitosan-based coating on in vitro inhibition of Colletotrichum tamarilloi and anthracnose control of scarlet eggplant fruits. Chitosan was dissolved in a 2% citric acid solution at 40°C and then homogenized with potato dextrose agar (PDA), and poured into Petri dishes, as follows: 1) PDA + 0.1% chitosan, 2) PDA + 0.2% chitosan, 3) PDA + 0.3% chitosan, 4) PDA + 0.4% chitosan, and 5) pure PDA as control. Discs of 5 mm diameter of pure fungus culture were placed on the center of the culture medium in the plates. The plates were then maintained in BOD at 25°C and 12-h photoperiod for 10 days. Colony characteristics, mycelial growth rate, and mycelial growth inhibition were evaluated. Afterward, the effect of chitosan coating was evaluated in fruit inoculated or not with C. tamarilloi. The treatments were: T1) uncoated and injured uninoculated fruits, T2) uncoated and inoculated fruit, T3) fruits coated with 0.1% chitosan and inoculated, T4) fruits coated with 0.2% chitosan and inoculated, and T5) fruits coated with chitosan at 0.3% and inoculated. For inoculation, 15 μL of a conidial suspension (2 x 105 conidia/mL) were deposited on an injury caused by a needle, and the fruits were coated by immersion into the different concentrations of chitosan gel. Fruits were placed on expanded polystyrene trays. Fresh weight loss, the mean incidence of disease, and lesion diameter were measured. All concentrations of chitosan reduced the in vitro growth of C. tamarilloi. The treatment T4 reduced the severity of anthracnose but did not prevent its incidence in scarlet eggplant fruits.

RESUMO O jiló (Solanum aethiopicum var. gilo) é uma Solanaceae apreciada por seu peculiar sabor amargo, e que desempenha um papel relevante para a agricultura familiar no Brasil. A antracnose dos frutos é a principal doença pré- e pós-colheita do jiló no Brasil. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da quitosana na inibição in vitro de Colletotrichum tamarilloi e no controle da antracnose em frutos de jiló. A quitosana foi dissolvida em uma solução de ácido cítrico a 2% a 40°C e, em seguida, homogeneizada com o meio de cultura batata dextrose ágar (BDA) e colocado em placas de Petri, como segue: 1) BDA + quitosana 0,1%, 2) BDA + quitosana 0,2%, 3) BDA + quitosana 0,3%, 4) BDA + quitosana 0,4% e 5) BDA puro como controle. Discos de 5 mm de diâmetro de cultura de fungo puro foram colocados no centro do meio de cultura nas placas. As placas foram então mantidas em incubadora BOD a 25°C e fotoperíodo de 12 h por 10 dias. As características da colônia, a taxa de crescimento e a inibição do crescimento micelial foram avaliadas. Em seguida, foi avaliado o efeito do recobrimento de quitosana em frutos inoculados ou não com C. tamarilloi. Os tratamentos foram: T1) frutos não revestidos e feridos e não inoculados, T2) frutos não revestidos e inoculados, T3) frutos revestidos com quitosana 0,1% e inoculados, T4) frutos revestidos com quitosana 0,2% e inoculados e T5) frutos revestidos com quitosana 0,3% e inoculado. Para a inoculação, 15 μL de uma suspensão de conídios (2 x 105 conídios/mL) foram depositados sobre um ferimento causado por uma agulha, e os frutos foram revestidos por imersão nas diferentes concentrações de gel de quitosana. Os frutos foram colocados em bandejas de poliestireno expandido. Foram medidos a perda de massa fresca, a incidência média da doença e o diâmetro da lesão. Todas as concentrações de quitosana reduziram o crescimento in vitro de C. tamarilloi. O tratamento T4 reduziu a severidade da antracnose, mas não impediu sua incidência em frutos de jiló.

The main objective of this work was to develop a nanoemulsion based on linseed oil and betulinic acid, stabilized with Pluronic F127 and polyglycerol polyricinoleate, for anticancer applications. The nanoemulsions were synthesized by ultrasound and evaluated for in vitro cytotoxicity, particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, morphology, encapsulation efficiency, storage stability, rheology and in vitro release kinetics. In vitro cytotoxicity assays were performed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay (72 h) against HCT-116 (colorectal carcinoma), SNB-19 (glioblastoma), NCI-H460 (lung carcinoma) and L-929 (normal fibroblasts) cells. The determination of 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) showed an increased selectivity for the emulsified betulinic acid when compared to its free form for the HCT-116 cells. The IC50 values for the synthesized nanoemulsions showed a range from 3.2 to 3.7 µM (HCT-116), 5.6 and 11.5 µM (NCI-H460), 5.8 and 7.3 µM (SNB-19) and > 16.5 µM for normal fibroblasts. In the 48 h in vitro release assays, it presented controlled release explained by the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, releasing 572.25 and 619.95 µg of betulinic acid in a controlled way, generating promising perspectives for the prolonged release of betulinic acid in anticancer applications.

RESUMO Objetivo: Testar a confiabilidade entre dois instrumentos com diferentes mecanismos de análise, seja por GPS (modelo GPSPORTS®) ou por análise de vídeo (InStat For Players®), relacionando os resultados de distância total percorrida e distância em alta velocidade ≥ 20km/h (Distância de Corrida de Intensidade Muito Alta, VHIR) durante partidas oficiais de futebol. Desenho do Estudo: Este é um estudo metodológico. Dados de 35 atletas de futebol profissional do sexo masculino, de todas as posições táticas foram incluídos. Idade 29,2 (± 4,8 anos) e gordura corporal 9,9 (± 1,7%), excluindo goleiros (102 análises individuais) foram coletados em jogos oficiais. Na análise dos dados, foram utilizados procedimentos de estatística descritiva para caracterizar a amostra e o coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (ICC) foi utilizado para verificar a concordância quanto à estabilidade e consistência interna dos testes com intervalos de confiança (IC) de 95%. Resultados: O ICC no caso da variável distância total percorrida foi significativo 0,914 (0,876; 0,941) e indicou concordância muito elevada, com o coeficiente de correlação linear indicando forte correlação positiva (p <0,001). O ICC para a variável VHIR não foi significativo, embora o coeficiente de correlação linear indique uma correlação positiva forte (p <0,001). Declaração de Relevância Clínica: Este estudo revela que há boa concordância na comparação de dois sistemas projetados para analisar as demandas de movimento de cada atleta profissional de futebol em relação à distância total percorrida. ABSTRACT Objective: To test the reliability between two instruments with different analysis mechanisms, either by GPS (model GPSPORTS®) or by video analysis (InStat For Players®), relating the results of total distance covered and distance at high speed ≥ 20km/h (Very High-Intensity Running Distance, VHIR) during official soccer matches. Study Design: This is a methodological study. Data from 35 male professional soccer athletes from all tactical positions were included. Age 29.2 (± 4.8 years) and body fat 9.9 (± 1.7%), excluding goalkeepers (102 individual analyzes) were collected in official matches. In the data analysis, descriptive statistics procedures were used to characterize the sample and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to verify the agreement on the stability and internal consistency of the tests with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: The ICC in the case of the total distance traveled variable was significant 0,914 (0,876; 0,941) and indicated a very high agreement, with the linear correlation coefficient indicating a strong positive correlation (p <0.001). The ICC for the VHIR variable was not significant, although the linear correlation coefficient indicates a strong positive correlation (p <0.001). Clinical Relevance Statment: This study reveals that there is good agreement in the comparison of two systems designed to analyze the movement demands of each professional soccer athlete in relation to the total distance covered. RESUMEN Objetivo: Probar la confiabilidad entre dos instrumentos con diferentes mecanismos de análisis, ya sea por GPS (modelo GPSPORTS®) y por análisis de video (InStat For Players®), relacionando los resultados de distancia total recorrida y distancia a alta velocidad ≥ 20km / h (Distancia de carrera de muy alta intensidad, VHIR) durante los partidos oficiales de fútbol. Diseño del estudio: se trata de un estudio metodológico. En los partidos oficiales se recopilaron datos de 35 atletas de fútbol profesionales masculinos, de todas las posiciones tácticas. Edad 29,2 (± 4,8 años) y grasa corporal 9,9 (± 1,7%), excluidos los porteros (102 análisis individuales). En el análisis de datos, se utilizaron procedimientos de estadística descriptiva para caracterizar la muestra y se utilizó el coeficiente de correlación intraclase (CCI) para verificar la concordancia sobre la estabilidad y consistencia interna de las pruebas con intervalos de confianza (IC) del 95%. Resultados: El CCI en el caso de la variable distancia total recorrida fue significativa 0,914 (0,876; 0,941) e indicó una concordancia muy alta, con el coeficiente de correlación lineal indicando una fuerte correlación positiva (p <0,001). El CCI para la variable VHIR no fue significativo, aunque el coeficiente de correlación lineal indica una fuerte correlación positiva (p <0,001). Enunciado de relevancia clínica: Este estudio revela que existe un buen acuerdo en la comparación de dos sistemas diseñados para analizar las demandas de movimiento de cada deportista de fútbol profesional en relación con la distancia total recorrida. Flow-accelerated corrosion has been studied by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques and rotating cage (RC) autoclave tests according to ASTM G170. This study evaluated through CFD and laboratory tests the influence of RC geometry and baffles on the wall shear stress (τw) proposed by the aforementioned standard. The experimental were performed at 120 °C and 2 angular velocities (500 and 800 rpm) during 25 h in a solution with 600 mg/L of Cl- ions and 10-3 mol/L of sodium thiosulfate. Corrosion rates were obtained by ASTM G31 and the surfaces were evaluated by OM and XRD. Corrosion rate values and XRD analyses showed divergence between samples in different positions in the RC and between distinct regions in the same sample. The numerical simulations and the experimental tests showed a great influence of the baffles on τw. The conservatism in the values obtained with this technique is caused by excessive corrosion close to the samples edges and the non-uniformity of τw on the internal samples surfaces. Thus, the main conclusion of the study is related to the importance of better knowledge on experimental methodology and mathematical approximations for updating the criterion for the correct τw calculation on sample surfaces.

Abstract This work reports the evaluation of the microstructure, morphology, and catalytic behavior of α-Al2O3 synthesized via combustion method for esterification reaction of oleic acid in soybean oil with ethanol to produce biodiesel. The reaction was evaluated with 2 wt% of catalyst at 160 °C for 3 h when the molar ratio of fatty acid:ethanol was 1:12. To enhance the catalytic performance of α-Al2O3, its sulfation was done by a different method using mechanical milling. The microcatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourie transform infrared spectroscopy, granulometric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed α-Al2O3 as the major phase, presence of SO4 2- groups, the contribution of the sulfation process to morphology with reduction of agglomerates, and particle size from 18.98 to 15.30 mm. The yield of ester was enhanced from 80% (α-Al2O3 as a catalyst) to 93% (SO4 2-/α-Al2O3 as a catalyst), which showed the milling as a fast method for synthesis of a highly efficient acid catalyst to produce biodiesel.

Resumo Este estudo avaliou o efeito do tratamento térmico pós-cura (PCHT) na microdureza Knoop (KHN), grau de conversão (DC), mudanças de cor e razão de contraste (CR) de quatro compósitos resinosos (RCs): Z100 (3M ESPE ), Z350 XT (3M ESPE), Estelite Omega (Tokuyama) e Empress Direct (Ivoclar Vivadent). Corpos de prova (12 × 1 mm) foram preparadas para cada material (n = 10 / grupo). Após a cura, as amostras foram submetidas ao PCHT por 10 min a 100 ou 170° C. O grupo controle foi mantido à temperatura ambiente (24° C) pelo mesmo tempo. O DC foi analisada por FT-NIR imediatamente e 24 h após a PCHT (n = 3 / grupo). KHN foi analisado 24 h após PCHT (n = 10 / grupo). De acordo com o CIEDE2000 (∆E00), as medidas de cor foram obtidas imediatamente após a cura, cinco minutos após a PCHT e após sete dias de armazenamento em água, café e vinho tinto. Os dados foram analisados por ANOVA de um e dois fatores (P < 0,05). Z100, Z350 XT e Estelite Omega mostraram aumentos no KHN com o aumento da temperatura (P < 0,05). PCHT a 100 ° C e 170 ° C levou a uma maior DC de todos os RCs (P < 0,05). Inicialmente, o PCHT levou ao aumento dos valores de ∆E00 (P < 0,05), que diminuiu após a imersão em café e vinho (P < 0,05). Considerando o efeito de PCHT e soluções de coloração, menores mudanças de cor foram observadas nas amostras tratadas termicamente (P < 0,05). Os resultados sugerem o PCHT como uma alternativa econômica e prática para aumentar as propriedades diretas de compósitos resinosos em restaurações diretas-indiretas e indiretas.

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of post-cure heat treatment (PCHT) on the Knoop microhardness (KHN), degree of conversion (DC), color changes, and contrast ratio (CR) of four resin composites (RCs): Z100 (3M ESPE), Z350 XT (3M ESPE), Estelite Omega (Tokuyama) and Empress Direct (Ivoclar Vivadent). Specimens (12 × 1 mm) were prepared for each material (n = 10 / group). After curing, samples were subjected to PCHT for 10 min at 100°C or 170°C. Control group was maintained at room temperature (24°C) for the same time. The DC was analyzed by FT-NIR immediately and 24 h after the PCHT (n = 3 / group). KHN was analyzed 24 h after PCHT (n = 10 / group). According to CIEDE2000 (∆E00), color measurements were obtained immediately after curing, five minutes after PCHT, and after seven days of storage in water, coffee, and red wine. Data were analyzed by One and Two-Way ANOVA (p < 0.05). Z100, Z350, and Estelite Omega showed increases in KHN with increased temperature (p < 0.05). PCHT at 100°C and 170°C led to a higher DC of all RCs (p < 0.05). Initially, the PCHT lead to increased ∆E00 values (p < 0.05), which was decreased after immersion in coffee and wine (p < 0.05). Considering the effect of PCHT and staining solutions, lower color changes were observed in the thermally treated specimens (p < 0.05). Taken collectively, the results suggest the PCHT as an economical and practical alternative to enhance direct RC's properties in direct-indirect and indirect restorations.

Resumo Este estudo avaliou a genotoxicidade do extrato glicólico liofilizado de sementes de Theobroma cacao Linné (TCL), usando o ensaio do micronúcleo em medula óssea de camundongos. A interação entre TCL e doxorrubicina (DXR) foi também analisada. Grupos experimentais foram avaliados 24-48 h após tratamento com N-Nitroso-N-etilureia (NEU: 50 mg/kg), DXR (5 mg/kg), NaCl (145 mM), TCL (0,5-2 g/kg), e TCL (2 g/kg) em combinação com DXR (ensaio antigenotóxico). As análises de eritrócitos policromáticos micronucleados (EPCMNs) não mostraram diferenças significantes entre todas as doses de tratamento do TCL e o controle NaCl. Camundongos experimentalmente tratados com DXR e NEU induziram significativamente EPCMNs. Contudo, uma redução significante de EPCMNs foi também observada quando TCL foi administrada em combinação com o agente quimioterapêutico DXR. As análises da relação EPC/ENC (eritrócito policromático/eritrócito normocromático) revelaram ausência de diferenças significantes entre o controle NaCl, todas as doses de TCL e DXR. Contudo, houve diferenças significantes na relação EPC/ENC entre o controle positivo NEU e todos os outros tratamento. A relação ECP/ENC observada após o tratamento com TCL e DXR mostrou diferenças significantes e valores intermediários aos controles (NaCl e NEU). Este estudo sugere ausência de genotoxicidade e citotoxicidade de TCL, independentemente da dose, sexo e tempo. TCL reduziu os efeitos genotóxicos induzidos por DXR, sugerindo potencial efeitos antigenotóxicos.

Abstract This study evaluated the genotoxicity of lyophilized glycolic extract of Theobroma cacao Linné seeds (TCL), using the micronucleus assay in bone marrow of mice. The interaction between TCL and doxorubicin (DXR) was also analyzed. Experimental groups were evaluated 24-48 h after treatment with N-Nitroso-N-ethylurea (NEU: 50 mg/kg), DXR (5 mg/kg), NaCl (145 mM), TCL (0.5-2 g/kg), and TCL (2 g/kg) in combination with DXR (antigenotoxic assays). Analysis of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MNPCEs) showed no significant differences between all the treatment doses of TCL and NaCl control. Mice experimentally treated with DXR and NEU significantly induced MNPCEs. However, a significant reduction of MNPCEs was also observed when TCL was administered in combination with the chemotherapeutic agent DXR. The analysis of the PCE/NCE ratio revealed no significant differences between the NaCl control, all doses of TCL, and DXR. However, there were significant differences in the PCE/NCE ratio between positive NEU control and all other treatments. The PCE/NCE ratio observed after treatment with TCL and DXR showed significant differences and intermediate values to controls (NaCl and NEU). This study suggests absence of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of TCL, regardless of dose, sex, and time. TCL reduced genotoxic effects induced by DXR, suggesting potential antigenotoxic effects.

The corrosion inhibition of mild steel by aqueous extract of cumaru (Dipteryx odorata) seeds and its high molecular weight fraction (HMWF) was investigated in 1 mol L-1 HCl solution. The study was carried out through gravimetric essays, open circuit potential measurements, anodic and cathodic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance analyses, as well as morphological analysis of the mild steel by scanning electron microscopy. Gravimetric tests showed that the inhibition efficiency (IE) increased with immersion time and inhibitor concentration, reaching 98% of IE using 100 mg L-1 of the HMWF, after 6 h immersion time. The activation energy (Ea) increased with the addition of both inhibitors which characterizes a physical adsorption of the constituents of the aqueous extract of cumaru on the metal surface. Polarization curves indicated that both aqueous cumaru seeds extract and its HMWF act as mixed-type inhibitor. Impedance results showed a decrease in double layer capacitance (Cdl) and an increase in charge transfer resistance (Rct) evidencing a typically screening effect. The adsorption of molecules present in the aqueous extract of cumaru followed the Langmuir isotherm. The aqueous cumaru seeds extract was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H, 13C and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

Abstract Candida spp. are naturally opportunistic and can promote infections. These yeasts can form biofilm, after penetration and adhesion to the biotic or abiotic surfaces. Preexisting diseases, treatments with drugs and radiation therapy, medical procedures, and parafunctional habits favor the installation of a fungal infection. Increased resistance to the available antifungals has become a concern. Therefore, alternative methods to control them have been evaluated, including the use of plant substances. In this study, the antibiofilm effect of R. officinalis L. extract was analyzed on C. albicans, C. dubliniensis, C. glabrata, C. krusei, and C. tropicalis. A phytochemical analysis of the extract was performed. Biofilms were formed for 48 h and exposed to the different concentrations of the extract (50, 100, and 200 mg/mL) for 5 min or 24 h. The effect of the plant extract was compared to the antifungal nystatin. Rosmarinus officinalis L. extract was constituted of phenols and flavonoids, highlighting the presence of chlorogenic acid derivatives in its composition. Biofilm reductions were observed after exposure to the plant extract for both periods. The plant extract provided a reduction similar to the antifungal. Thus, R. officinalis L. extract showed antibiofilm effect on Candida spp. comparable to the nystatin.

Abstract During grain storage, a considerable amount of product is lost because of insects, such as Zabrotes subfasciatus. Currently, to mitigate these risks, studies are searching for plants with potential for the control of agricultural pests, also known as botanical insecticides. In this study, the fumigant toxicity of the essential oils of Piper callosum (PC-EO), Piper marginatum (PM-EO) and Vitex agnus-castus (VA-EO) against Zabrotes subfasciatus was investigated. The essential oils of PC-EO, PM-EO and VA-EO were analysed by gas chromatography (GC-MS), and the major components were 3,4-methylenedioxypropiophenone (10.4%), bicyclogermacrene (10.1%) and germacrene D (9.9%) for PM-EO; safrol (29.3%) for PC-EO; and 1,8-cineol (23.8%) for VA-EO. In fumigation tests, VA-EO killed 100% Zabrotes subfasciatus at a concentration of 0.004 µL/L air after 24 h of treatment, whereas PC-EO and PM-EO at 0.01 µL/L air caused 100% Z. subfasciatus mortality after 48 h. The VA-EO sample provided the lowest LD50 after 24 h (0.17 µL/L air), followed by PC-EO (0.78 µL/L air) and PM-EO (1.17 µL/L air). These results demonstrate that the essential oils of these species can be an alternative to control pests in stored products. This is the first report of the fumigant potential of these species against Z. subfasciatus.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar a utilização de bioestimulante (Stimulate®) na produtividade e na qualidade de frutos de abobrinha, cultivar Caserta Italiana, em condições salinas. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2 × 6, sendo dois níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0,5 e 5,0 dS m-1) e seis estratégias de aplicação de bioestimulante [B1 - ausência de bioestimulante (embebição das sementes por 8 horas em água destilada); B2 - aplicado via tratamento de sementes (embebição por 8 h em bioestimulante); B3 - aplicação via semente (embebição por 8 horas em solução de bioestimulante 10 mL L-1) mais uma aplicação foliar no florescimento (10 mL L-1); B4 - aplicação via semente (embebição por 8 horas em solução de bioestimulante 10 mL L-1) mais duas aplicações via foliar no florescimento aos 20 e 30 dias após a semeadura; B5 - aplicação foliar (10 mL L-1) no florescimento; B6 - duas aplicações foliares (10 mL L-1), aos 20 e 30 dias após a semeadura]. A salinidade da água de irrigação afetou de forma diferenciada as variáveis analisadas na cultura da abobrinha. A aplicação do bioestimulante, na ausência do estresse salino, resultou no aumento do teor de sólidos solúveis e no acúmulo da biomassa de abobrinha. O bioestimulante aplicado via sementes e durante o florescimento aumentou a produtividade de frutos de abobrinha irrigada com água salina.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a plant growth regulator (PGR; Stimulate®) on the yield and quality of zucchini fruits from plants of the cultivar Caserta-Italiana grown under different salinity levels of the irrigation water (SLIW). A randomized block design was used, in a 2 × 6 factorial arrangement consisted of two SLIW (0.5 and 5.0 dS m-1) and six PGR application modes: imbibition of seeds for 8 h in distilled water (PGR-T1; Control); imbibition of seeds for 8 h in PGR at 10 mL L-1 (PGR-T2); imbibition of seeds for 8 h in PGR at 10 mL L-1 plus foliar application at 10 mL L-1 at the flowering stage (PGR-T3); imbibition of seeds for 8 h in PGR at 10 mL L-1 plus two foliar applications at the flowering stage and at 20 and 30 days after sowing (PGR-T4); foliar application at 10 mL L-1 at the flowering stage (PGR-T5); and two foliar applications at 10 mL L-1 at 20 and 30 days after sowing (PGR-T6). The SLIW affected differently the variables of the zucchini crops evaluated. The PGR application to plants under no salt stress (0.5 dS m-1) increased the solid soluble concentration and biomass accumulation of zucchini fruits. The PGR application as seed treatment and foliar application at the flowering stage increased the fruit yield of zucchini plants irrigated with saline water.
