Abstract The antiulcer mechanisms of the dry extract of T. erecta flowers (DETe) were studied here. The acute ulcers induced by acidified ethanol or indomethacin were reproduced in mice pretreated with DETe (3 - 300 mg/kg). The antiulcer activity of DETe was also verified in mice pretreated with NEM, L-NAME, indomethacin, or yohimbine. The antisecretory effect of DETe was verified in rats, and its anti-Helicobacter pylori activity was determined in vitro. DETe (300 mg/kg, p.o) reduced the ethanol- or indomethacin-induced ulcer by 49 and 93%, respectively. The pre-treatment with L-NAME, NEM or yohimbine abolished the gastroprotective effect of DETe. However, DETe did not change the volume, acidity, or peptic activity in rats and did not affect H. pylori. This study expands knowledge about the antiulcerogenic potential of DETe, evidencing the role of nitric oxide, non-protein sulfhydryl groups, α2 adrenergic receptors, and prostaglandins, but not antisecretory or anti-H. pylori properties.

Abstract Introduction In chronic arthropathies, there are several mechanisms of joint destruction. In recent years, studies have reported the implication of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) in the process of activation and differentiation of osteoclasts, a key cell in the development of bone erosion. The RANKL/OPG ratio is increased in the serum of patients with malignant diseases and lytic bone disease, as well as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The objective of this study was to measure and compare the concentrations of OPG and RANKL in the synovial fluid (SF) of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis (SpA) and osteoarthritis (OA). Methods This was an observational and cross-sectional study with 83 patients, 33 with RA, 32 with SpA and 18 with OA, followed up regularly in the outpatient clinics of the Rheumatology Department of the Clinics Hospital of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School-USP. All patients were assessed for indications for arthrocentesis by the attending physicians at the time of SF collection and were evaluated for demographic variables and medication use. Disease activity was assessed in individuals with RA and SpA. The quantification of SF OPG and RANKL levels was performed by ELISA, and the correlations of the results with clinical, laboratory and radiological parameters were assessed. Results We found no statistically significant difference in the RANKL and OPG levels among the groups. Patients with RA showed a positive correlation between the SF cell count and RANKL level (r = 0.59; p < 0.05) and the RANKL/ OPG ratio (r = 0.55; p < 0.05). Patients with OA showed a strong correlation between C-reactive protein (CRP) and the RANKL/OPG ratio (r = 0.82; p < 0.05). There was no correlation between the OPG and RANKL levels and markers of inflammatory activity or the disease activity index in patients with RA or SpA. Conclusion Within this patient cohort, the RANKL/OPG ratio was correlated with the SF cell count in patients with RA and with serum CRP in patients with OA, which may suggest a relationship with active inflammation and more destructive joint disease.

Abstract Long-term-ecological-research (LTER) faces many challenges, including the difficulty of obtaining long-term funding, changes in research questions and sampling designs, keeping researchers collecting standardized data for many years, impediments to interactions with local people, and the difficulty of integrating the needs of local decision makers with “big science”. These issues result in a lack of universally accepted guidelines as to how research should be done and integrated among LTER sites. Here we discuss how the RAPELD (standardized field infrastructure system), can help deal with these issues as a complementary technique in LTER studies, allowing comparisons across landscapes and ecosystems and reducing sampling costs. RAPELD uses local surveys to understand broad spatial and temporal patterns while enhancing decision-making and training of researchers, local indigenous groups and traditional communities. Sampling of ecological data can be carried out by different researchers through standardized protocols, resulting in spatial data that can be used to answer temporal questions, and allow new questions to be investigated. Results can also be integrated into existing biodiversity networks. Integrated systems are the most efficient way to save resources, maximize results, and accumulate information that can be used in the face of the unknown unknowns upon which our future depends.

BACKGROUND Leishmaniasis, a neglected disease caused by the parasite Leishmania, is treated with drugs associated with high toxicity and limited efficacy, in addition to constant reports of the emergence of resistant parasites. In this context, snake serums emerge as good candidates since they are natural sources with the potential to yield novel drugs. OBJECTIVES We aimed to show the antileishmanial effects of γCdcPLI, a phospholipase A2 inhibitor from Crotalus durissus collilineatus snake serum, against Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. METHODS Promastigotes forms were exposed to γCdcPLI, and we assessed the parasite viability and cell cycle, as well as invasion and proliferation assays. FINDINGS Despite the low cytotoxicity effect on macrophages, our data indicate that γCdcPLI has a direct effect on parasites promoting an arrest in the G1 phase and reduction in the G2/M phase at the highest dose tested. Moreover, this PLA2 inhibitor reduced the parasite infectivity when promastigotes were pre-treated. Also, we demonstrated that the γCdcPLI treatment modulated the host cell environment impairing early and late steps of the parasitism. RESUMO A pandemia de covid-19 gerou um grande número de internações hospitalares e uma quantidade considerável de casos evolui para a forma grave da doença e óbito. A manobra de posição prona é uma estratégia terapêutica com forte evidência de redução da mortalidade em pacientes com síndrome do desconforto respiratório agudo (SDRA). Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar se a manobra de decúbito ventral é realizada como estratégia de tratamento de pacientes com covid-19 em ventilação mecânica invasiva por profissionais de saúde que atuam em ambiente hospitalar e a percepção sobre seu impacto na mortalidade. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, com amostra de conveniência composta por profissionais de saúde que atuam em hospitais de todo o Brasil, de ambos os sexos. Os participantes responderam a um questionário online, composto por 16 questões, elaborado no Google Forms, de julho a setembro de 2020. Quatrocentos e cinquenta e cinco questionários foram respondidos. A manobra da posição prona é realizada rotineiramente em hospitais onde atuam 386 profissionais (95%). Desses, 374 (96,9%) têm a percepção de que a manobra de decúbito ventral reduz a hipoxemia e 289 (74,9%) percebe que ela reduz a mortalidade de pacientes com covid-19 e SDRA em ventilação mecânica invasiva. Em conclusão, a maioria dos profissionais de saúde que atuam em hospitais brasileiros realiza e acredita que a manobra de decúbito ventral reduz a hipoxemia e a mortalidade em pacientes com covid-19 em ventilação mecânica invasiva.

ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a great number of hospitalizations. A considerable number of cases progress to the severe form of the infection and death. Prone positioning is a therapeutic strategy with strong evidence of reduced mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This study aims to assess if the prone positioning strategy is used by health professionals in hospitals to treat patients with COVID-19 on invasive mechanical ventilation and the professionals’ perception of its effect on the mortality rate. This is a cross-sectional study, with a convenience sample composed of health professionals of both sexes working in hospitals throughout Brazil. Participants answered an online questionnaire composed of 16 questions using Google Forms, from July 2020 to September 2020. A total of 455 questionnaires were answered. Prone positioning is routinely performed in hospitals where 386 (95%) of the responding professionals work. Among them, 374 (96.9%) consider that the prone position strategy reduces hypoxemia and 289 (74.9%) consider that it reduces mortality in patients with COVID-19 and ARDS on invasive mechanical ventilation. Finally, most health professionals working in Brazilian hospitals perform and believe that prone positioning reduces hypoxemia and mortality in patients with COVID-19 on invasive mechanical ventilation.

RESUMEN La pandemia del Covid-19 ha generado un incremento de las hospitalizaciones y un gran número de casos de esta enfermedad ha evolucionado a su forma grave y la muerte. El manejo de la posición de decúbito prono es una estrategia terapéutica con sólida evidencia de reducción de la mortalidad en pacientes con síndrome de dificultad respiratoria aguda (SDRA). Este estudio tuvo como objetivo comprobar si la posición de decúbito prono es realizada por los profesionales de la salud que trabajan en un hospital como estrategia para el tratamiento de pacientes con el Covid-19 en ventilación mecánica invasiva y la percepción de estos profesionales sobre el impacto de tal práctica en la mortalidad. Se trata de un estudio transversal, con una muestra de conveniencia compuesta por profesionales de la salud que actúan en hospitales de todo Brasil, de ambos sexos. Los participantes respondieron un cuestionario en línea, con 16 preguntas en Google Forms, en el periodo de julio a septiembre de 2020. Se respondieron 455 cuestionarios. El manejo de la posición de decúbito prono se realiza de forma rutinaria en los hospitales donde trabajan 386 profesionales (95%). De estos, 374 (96,9%) tienen la percepción de que el manejo de la posición de decúbito prono reduce la hipoxemia y 289 (74,9%) perciben que esta práctica reduce la mortalidad de los pacientes con Covid-19 y SDRA en ventilación mecánica invasiva. Se concluye que la mayoría de los profesionales de la salud que actúan en los hospitales brasileños realizan y creen que la posición de decúbito prono reduce la hipoxemia y la mortalidad en pacientes con Covid-19 en ventilación mecánica invasiva.

Resumo Este artigo analisa como a Política Nacional de Saúde Integral da População Negra (PNSIPN) tem sido implementada na atenção à saúde em três municípios do Estado da Bahia, Brasil. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo que faz parte da primeira etapa de uma pesquisa-ação, na qual foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com 27 profissionais de unidades de Saúde da Família, Atenção Básica e Sede do Distrito Sanitário. Após análise de conteúdo, emergiram quatro categorias: Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS); Saúde da População Negra; Atenção à saúde na diversidade; e PNSIPN. Como resultado, os profissionais apresentaram entendimento superficial sobre a APS, apesar de a reconhecerem como porta de entrada. A relevância de uma atenção à saúde específica para a população negra foi desconsiderada, sob o argumento de que todos são iguais. A diversidade racial não foi reconhecida dentro do cotidiano, sendo o termo atrelado à diversidade LGBTQIA+ e aos ciclos de vida. O dado comum nos municípios foi o desconhecimento da PNSIPN e dos meios práticos para inseri-la no cotidiano do trabalho. A ausência da política para essa população no processo de planejamento e trabalho dos serviços revela a urgência da educação permanente em saúde para a apropriação do princípio de equidade pelas gestoras e profissionais.

Abstract This study analyzes how the National Policy on Comprehensive Health of the Black Population (PNSIPN) has been implemented in three municipalities in the state of Bahia, Brazil. This qualitative study is part of an ongoing action research, in which semi-structured interviews were performed with 27 professionals from family health, primary health care, and health district headquarters. Content analysis presented four categories: primary health care (PHC); Black health; health care in diversity; and PNSIPN. Health professionals showed a superficial understanding of PHC, despite recognizing it as a gateway. A specific health care for the Black population was considered irrelevant, on the grounds that everyone is equal. Diversity was linked to the LGBTQIA+ population and life cycles, but not to ethnicity or skin color. All municipalities lacked knowledge about the PNSIPN and the practical means to implement it in their daily work. Its absence in the services’ planning and work processes shows an urgent need for permanent education in health so that managers and professional can appropriate the principle of equity.

RESUMO: Varronia curassavica é uma espécie medicinal nativa no Brasil e sua propriedade anti-inflamatória é atribuída aos compostos α-humuleno e β-cariofileno. O objetivo foi estudar a variabilidade de população de V. curassavica. Foram coletadas folhas de 40 indivíduos de população natural, sendo estas transferidas para frascos de vidro (2 mL). Os voláteis foram extraídos e analisados por headspace estático, associado à cromatografia gasosa, acoplada à espectrometria de massas (HS-CG-EM). Detectou-se 17 compostos: monoterpenos (1,6% - 68%) e sesquiterpenos (25,7% - 79,0%), incluindo o α-humuleno e o β-cariofileno. A análise multivariada foi realizada para estimar a dissimilaridade dos indivíduos, a qual separou quatro grupos. O grupo I foi caracterizado pela presença do α-pineno, os grupos II e IV do β-cariofileno e o grupo III do β-pineno. O teor do α-humuleno apresentou pequenas variações, enquanto o do β-cariofileno contribuiu mais para a variabilidade da população. É o primeiro relato de análise da composição química de compostos voláteis de V. curassavica utilizando a técnica HS-GC-MS.

ABSTRACT: Varronia curassavica is a medicinal species native to Brazil; its anti-inflammatory properties are attributed to α-humulene and β-caryophyllene. This study to investigated the population variability of V. curassavica. Leaves were collected from 40 individuals of a natural population and transferred to glass flasks (2 mL). The volatiles were extracted and analyzed using static headspace gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS). A total of 17 compounds were detected: monoterpenes (1.6% - 68%) and sesquiterpenes (25.7% - 79.0%), including α-humulene and β-caryophyllene. Multivariate analysis was performed to estimate the dissimilarity of individuals separated the compounds into four groups. Group I was characterized by the content of α-pinene, groups II and IV by β-caryophyllene, and group III by β-pinene. The abundance of α-humulene showed small variations; while β-caryophyllene showed larger variations that contributed to the population variability. This is the first report on the chemical composition analysis of volatile compounds in V. curassavica using the HS-GC-MS technique.

Abstract The use of shallow geothermal energy through energy piles for the air-conditioning of buildings is increasing worldwide. This type of renewable energy technology is still not utilized in Brazil, where the hot dominating weather regions and the air cooling demand predominate. In this case of unbalanced heat transfer to the ground, the efficiency of the system may decrease with time due to the excessive heat injection into the soil. In order to investigate the possibility of an efficient application of this technology in São Paulo city, a balanced use of the ground for a ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system utilizing energy piles is evaluated in the present paper. Energy foundations were designed to meet the balanced heating and cooling loads (air conditioning and water heating) of a hypothetical business hotel building located in a site at the campus of the University of São Paulo, where thermal response tests (TRTs) were conducted on different types of energy pile. The number of energy piles required to supply the building thermal loads were estimated using the pile heat exchanger modelling software PILESIM 2.1 and compared with an analytical model prediction. The evaluations were done for three different types of pile tested at the site chosen for this study: micropiles, steel pipe, and continuous flight auger (CFA) piles. The results indicate that the ground heat extraction should be considered for the use of GSHP systems with energy piles in air cooling-dominated scenarios similar to the case studied here.

RESUMO - O feijão-caupi é um alimento muito importante para as populações das regiões Norte e Nordeste do Brasil, representando uma excelente fonte de proteínas e minerais. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o potencial de 100 genótipos de feijão-caupi para biofortificação de ferro, zinco e proteína, e qualidade de cozimento. Os teores de ferro e zinco foram analisados por espectrometria de fluorescência de raios X; o conteúdo de proteínas foi baseado na determinação de nitrogênio, pelo método de Kjeldahl; e a qualidade de cozimento foi avaliada com uso de panela de pressão elétrica e cozedor de Mattson. A superioridade dos genótipos para ferro, zinco, proteínas e qualidade de cozimento foi realizada utilizando-se o índice de qualidade nutricional e de cozimento. O teor de ferro variou de 3,58 a 6,06 mg 100g-1, com uma média geral de 4,66 mg 100g-1, enquanto o teor de zinco entre 2,35 e 4,57 mg 100g-1 e média de 3,31 mg 100g-1. O ter de proteínas apresentou amplitude de 20,82 a 26,92 g 100g-1 e média de 24,30 g 100g-1. A porcentagem de grãos cozidos variou de 20 a 98%, com média de 68,7%. Os grãos da linhagem MNC11-1023E-28 apresentam melhor perfil de qualidade nutricional e de cocção, apresentando potencial como um alimento para atender às demandas dos consumidores e reverter a deficiência de ferro, zinco e proteínas na população brasileira.

ABSTRACT - Cowpea is a very important food for the populations of the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, representing an excellent source of proteins and minerals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of 100 cowpea genotypes for biofortification of iron, zinc, and proteins, and cooking quality of the grain. The iron and zinc contents were analyzed by x-ray fluorescence spectrometry; protein content was based on nitrogen determination, using the Kjeldahl method; and cooking quality was assessed using an electric pressure cooker and Mattson cooker. The superiority of genotypes for iron, zinc, proteins, and cooking quality was carried out using the nutritional quality and cooking index. The iron content ranged from 3.58 to 6.06 mg 100g-1, with an overall average of 4.66 mg 100g-1, while the zinc content between 2.35 and 4.57 mg 100g-1 and average of 3.31 mg 100g-1. Protein range ranged from 20.82 to 26.92 g 100g-1 and an average of 24.30 g 100g-1. The percentage of cooked grains ranged from 20 to 98%, with an average of 68.7%. The line MNC11-1023E-28 has the best profile of nutritional and cooking quality, showing potential as a food to meet consumer demands and reverse iron and zinc deficiency in the Brazilian population.

Resumo Parâmetros abióticos, como precipitação, temperatura e fotoperíodo, podem afetar a disponibilidade de frutos e flores para os animais, o que consequentemente afeta o estado nutricional e a saúde dos animais. Neste estudo, investigamos se fatores abióticos estão relacionados com alterações na disponibilidade de frutos, o que pode levar a mudanças no comportamento alimentar e, consequentemente, na carga de endoparasitas e estado de saúde geral em dois grupos de mico-leão-de-cara-dourada (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) que vivem em fragmentos degradados de Floresta Atlântica no sul da Bahia, Brasil. Detectamos que houve grande variação na disponibilidade de frutos maduros ao longo do ano, com menor disponibilidade no final da primavera e início do verão. Apesar disto, não houve diferenças no estado geral de saúde, na massa corporal ou nas contagens de células sanguíneas dos animais entre as estações do ano. Isto provavelmente ocorreu porque durante a escassez de frutos nativos, os micos comem espécies cultivadas, tais como a banana (Musa spp.) e jaca (Artocarpus heterophyllus). A temperatura e a duração do dia foram negativamente correlacionadas com a carga de endoparasitas de mico-leão-de-cara-dourada. Contrário ao previsto, a carga de endoparasitas não está ligada à escassez sazonal de frutos e consequentes mudanças no comportamento alimentar. Entretanto, encontramos maior diversidade de endoparasitas no grupo de mico-leão-de-cara-dourada que usou uma área de vida menor. Quanto menor a área disponível, maior o contato com parasitas, porque os micos são forçados a se deslocar constantemente pelas mesmas rotas na floresta, aumentando o risco de infecção e as taxas de reinfecção. Nossos resultados destacam como a saúde dos animais está associada à saúde ambiental, bem como a necessidade de monitoramento constante para a conservação eficaz das espécies ameaçadas de extinção, como o mico-leão-de-cara-dourada.

Abstract Both anthropogenic actions and abiotic parameters, such as rainfall, temperature and photoperiod, can affect fruit and flower availability for animals, which consequently affects nutritional status and thus animals’ health. Herein, we investigated whether abiotic factors are related to changes in fruit availability that can lead to changes in feeding behavior and, consequently, in endoparasite load and general health status in two groups of golden-headed lion tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) living in degraded fragments of Atlantic forest in Southern Bahia, Brazil. We detected that there was a high variation in availability of ripe fruits throughout the year, with lower availability occurring at the end of spring and beginning of summer. Despite this, there was no difference in tamarins’ general health status, body mass and blood counts between seasons. This is probably because during native fruit scarcity, the tamarins eat cultivated species, such as banana (Musa spp.) and jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus). Temperature and daylength were negatively correlated with golden-headed lion tamarin endoparasite loads. Contrary to our expectations, endoparasite loads are not linked to fruit scarcity and consequent changes in feeding behavior. Nevertheless, we found higher parasite diversity in the group of golden-headed lion tamarins that occupied the smallest home range. The smaller the area available, the greater the contact with parasites the animal will have, as they are forced to travel constantly along the same routes in the forest, increasing infection risk and re-infection rates. Our results highlight how animals’ health is associated with environmental health as well as the need for constant monitoring to ensure the effective conservation of endangered species, such as the golden-headed lion tamarin.

RESUMO Objetivo: descrever o perfil clínico epidemiológico da dengue em Anápolis, Goiás - BR entre os anos 2016 a 2020. Métodos: estudo descritivo de natureza quantitativa. Foram utilizados dados da ficha de notificação de dengue cadastrada no Departamento de Vigilância Epidemiológica. Utilizado o teste qui-quadrado com nível de significância cinco (5%) (p<0,05). Resultados: foram notificados 27.544 casos com o pico em 2019, sendo 54,2% do sexo feminino, faixa etária de 25 a 44 anos 36,7% e cor parda 70,3%. Dos casos ocorridos, 97,7% não foram hospitalizados, predominaram a dengue clássica em 98% e obteve-se cura em 99,9% dos casos. Houve diferença significativa em relação à faixa etária e à classificação da dengue, hospitalização e evolução clínica (p= 0,001). Conclusão: evidencia-se que a dengue é prevalente em Anápolis, sendo necessárias estratégias de prevenção e controle do vetor, principalmente, nos períodos de sazonalidade.

ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the clinical epidemiological profile of dengue in Anápolis, Goiás - BR between the years 2016 to 2020. Methods: descriptive study of a quantitative nature. Data from the dengue notification form registered in the Epidemiological Surveillance Department were used. Chi-square test was used with significance level five (5%) (p<0.05). Results: 27,544 cases were notified with the peak in 2019, being 54.2% female, age group 25 to 44 years 36.7% and brown color 70.3%. Of the cases that occurred, 97.7% were not hospitalized, classic dengue predominated in 98% and cure was obtained in 99.9% of cases. There was a significant difference regarding age group and dengue classification, hospitalization, and clinical evolution (p= 0.001). Conclusion: It is evident that dengue is prevalent in Anápolis, and strategies of prevention and control of the vector are necessary, especially during seasonal periods.

RESUMEN Objetivo: describir el perfil clínico epidemiológico del dengue en Anápolis, Goiás - BR entre los años 2016 a 2020. Métodos: estudio descriptivo de carácter cuantitativo. Se utilizaron datos de la ficha de notificación de dengue registrada en el Departamento de Vigilancia Epidemiológica. Se utilizó la prueba de chi-cuadrado con un nivel de significación del cinco (5%) (p<0,05). Resultados: Se notificaron 27.544 casos con el pico en 2019, siendo el 54,2% mujeres, el grupo de edad de 25 a 44 años el 36,7% y el color marrón el 70,3%. De los casos ocurridos, el 97,7% no fueron hospitalizados, el dengue clásico predominó en el 98% y se obtuvo la curación en el 99,9% de los casos. Hubo una diferencia significativa con respecto al grupo de edad y la clasificación del dengue, la hospitalización y la evolución clínica (p= 0,001). Conclusión: se evidencia que el dengue es prevalente en Anápolis, siendo necesarias estrategias de prevención y control del vector, principalmente, en los periodos de sazonalidad.

Resumo Objetivos: revisar a literatura disponível sobre os aspectos gerais dainfecção por SARS-CoV-2. Métodos: trata-se de uma revisão narrativa de literatura realizada nos meses de março asetembro de 2020. Resultados: a COVID-19, causada pelo novo coronavírus ou SARS-CoV-2, cresce com efeitos devastadores em todo o mundo. A literetura descreve dados epidemiológicos e sobre grupos de riscos para mortalidade da doença, a qual apresenta uma alta velocidade de trans-missão. A prevenção é a forma mais eficaz de combate à doença, persistindo ausências de fortes evidências sobre o tratamento. Vacinas ainda não estão disponíveis A dexametasona é efetiva para redução da mortalidade nas formas graves. Conclusão: apesar dos grandes esforços, à medida que o número de casos confirmados aumenta, evidências sobre transmissão, incidência, evolução da doença, letalidade, efeitos e os desfechos permanecem limitados e sem grandes níveis de evidência. Estudos ainda são necessários sobre todos os aspectos da doença.

Abstract Objectives: to review the available literature on the general aspects of SARS-CoV-2 infec-tion. Methods: this is a narrative literature review carried out from March to September 2020. Results: COVID-19 caused by the new coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2, grows with devas-tating effects worldwide. The literature describes epidemiological data and mortality risk groups of the disease, which presents a high rate of transmission. Prevention is the most effective way to fight the disease, persisting the absence of strong evidence on the treatment. Vaccines are not yet available. Dexamethasone is effective in reducing mortality in severe forms. Conclusions: despite great efforts, as the number of confirmed cases increases, evidence on transmission, incidence, disease progression, lethality, effects and outcomes remain limited and without any high levels of evidence. Studies are still necessary for all aspects of the disease.

Resumo Objetivos: revisar a literatura disponível sobre a COVID-19 e seus aspectos maternos e perinatais. Métodos: urna revisão narrativa de literatura foi realizada nos meses de março a setembro de 2020, utilizando os descritores, coronavirus, Covid 19, SARS-CoV-2, pregnancy, gravidity, pregnancy complications e pregnancy complications infectius. Foram incluidos todos os desenhos de estudo, revisões, recomendações e notas técnicas, sem distinção de idioma e que trouxessem a abordagem do novo coronavírus no cenárlo gestacional e perinatal. Resultados: a pandemia de COVID-19 vem apresentando efeitos devastadores, acometendo milhões depessoas e ceifando quase um milhão de vidas em todo o mundo. Inicialmente as gestantes não er am vistas como grupo de risco para a doença, porém na medida em que aumentou a proporção de mulheres acometidas durante o ciclo gravídico-puerperal diversos estudos foram publicados demostrando risco aumentado de complicações. Estudos brasileiros também alertaram para um número elevado de mortes maternas, associados à presença de comorbidades, mas, sobretudo, aos determinantes sociais da doença e a falhas graves da assistência. Conclusão: observou-se a necessidade de novos estudos com adequado delineamento de pesquisa, pois muitos estudos são apenas cartas ou pequenas séries de casos, além de recomendações de especialistas, sem o rigor científico necessário.

Abstract Objectives: reviewing the available literature on COVID-19 infection and the maternal and perinatal outcomes. Methods: this is a narrative review of the literature carried out from March to September 2020, usingthe MESH: coronavirus, Covid 19, SARS-CoV-2, pregnancy, gravidity, pregnancy complications and pregnancy complications infectius. All study designs, reviews, recommendations and technical notes were included, without distinction of language and that would bring the approach of the new coronavirus in the gestational and perinatal scenario. Results: the COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating effects, affecting millions of people and claiming almost a million lives worldwide. Initially, pregnant women were not seen as a risk group for the disease, however as the proportion of women affected during the pregnancy-puerperal cycle increased, several studies were published showing an increased risk of complications. Brazilian studies have also warned of a high number of maternal deaths, associated with the presence of comorbidities but, above all, with the social determinants of the disease and serious failures in care. Conclusion: the need for new studies with an adequate research design was observed, as many studies are only letters or small series of cases, in addition expert recommendations, without the necessary scientific rigor.
