RESUMO O objetivo foi descrever os níveis séricos de progesterona (P4) de éguas tratadas com um ou dois dispositivos intravaginais de primeiro uso e com um dispositivo de segundo uso de P4, em um período de 10 dias e comparar a concentração de P4. Três éguas foram tratadas com implante intravaginal de P4 (Reprosync®; 2g de P4) por 10 dias (D0 a D10). A égua 1 recebeu dois implantes novos, a égua 2 recebeu um implante novo e a égua 3 recebeu um implante usado de P4. Coletas de sangue foram realizadas diariamente (a.m./p.m.) do D0 ao D10 e concentrações de P4 foram analisadas por quimioluminescência. A égua que recebeu dois dispositivos apresentou numericamente maior concentração sérica média de P4 (5,11±2,24ng/mL) do que a égua que recebeu um dispositivo novo (3,27±0,94) e do que a égua que recebeu um dispositivo usado (2,78±0,72). As éguas que receberam um dispositivo (novo ou usado) tiveram médias de P4 relativamente semelhantes numericamente. Concluiu-se que a concentração sérica de P4 de éguas recebendo diferentes quantidades de dispositivos intravaginais de P4 parece diferir de acordo com o número de implantes inseridos. Ainda assim, todos os tratamentos atingiram concentrações séricas de P4 capazes de bloquear a ovulação.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and morphological characteristics of mixed mammary neoplasms and verify what characteristics affect the prognosis of female dogs with carcinomas in mixed tumors and carcinosarcomas. This was a retrospective study of 67 female dogs that underwent mastectomies and were diagnosed with benign mixed tumors (n=13), carcinomas in mixed tumors (n=44) and carcinosarcomas (n=10). Data regarding the clinical and histological aspects of the neoplasms were collected and the relation with specific survival times, and hazard ratios (HR) in 24 months was calculated. In univariate analysis, the diagnosis of carcinosarcoma (HR 8.26, p=0.006), carcinomatous areas with micropapillary or solid patterns (HR 17.49; p=0. 001) and lymph node metastasis (HR 7.07;p=0.020) were associated with specific survival. In multivariable analysis, only micropapillary or solid pattern (HR=16.34; p=0.007) remained independent factor associated with lower specific survival. Micropapillary or solid carcinomatous patterns were associated with shorter specific survival time (p=0.002) among animals with carcinomas in mixed tumors. Among the carcinosarcomas, lymph node metastasis (p=0.010) was associated with a shorter specific survival time. In conclusion, carcinomas in mixed tumors and carcinosarcomas vary in prognosis depending on the carcinomatous proliferation patterns and spread of the disease.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever as características clínicas e morfológicas das neoplasias mamárias mistas e verificar quais características interferem no prognóstico de cadelas com carcinomas em tumores mistos e carcinossarcomas. Este foi um estudo retrospectivo de 67 cadelas, que foram submetidas a mastectomias e diagnosticadas com tumores mistos benignos (n = 13), carcinomas em tumores mistos (n = 44) e carcinossarcomas (n = 10). Foram coletados dados sobre os aspectos clínicos e histológicos das neoplasias e a relação com o tempo de sobrevida específica e a razão de risco (OR) em 24 meses foram calculadas. Na análise univariada, o diagnóstico de carcinossarcoma (HR 8,26; p=0,006), as áreas carcinomatosas com padrão micropapilar e sólido (HR 17,49; p= 0,001) e metástase linfonodal (HR 7,07; p=0,020) foram associadas à menor sobrevida específica. Na análise multivariável, apenas o padrão micropapilar ou sólido (HR=16,34; p=0,007) permaneceu como fator independente associado à sobrevida. Proliferações carcinomatosas micropapilares ou sólidas (p = 0,002) foram associadas a tempos de sobrevida específica mais curtos entre os animais com carcinomas em tumor misto. Entre os pacientes com carcinossarcoma, metástases em linfonodos (p = 0,010) foram associadas a um menor tempo de sobrevida específica. Em conclusão, os resultados mostraram que os carcinomas em tumores mistos e os carcinossarcomas podem ter prognóstico variável, dependendo do padrão de proliferação carcinomatosa e da disseminação linfática da doença.

ABSTRACT Sea turtles are endangered animals that present cosmopolitan distribution. Anthropic actions have been considered important causes for the reduction of sea turtle population, but natural aspects such as parasitism may also contribute to their decline. This study aimed to report the occurrence of parasites in stranded dead sea turtles found in an area known as Potiguar Basin, northeastern Brazil, from 2010 to 2019. They were identified and classified according to the carapace length. At post-mortem analyses all organs were examined, parasites collected and morphologically identified. Ecological parasitic indexes as prevalence (P), mean intensity (MI) and mean abundance (MA) were calculated. A total of 80 Chelonia mydas and 5 Eretmochelys imbricata were assessed. Neoctangium travassosi was detected in both species presenting P = 20%, MI = 4.19 and MA = 0.84 for C. mydas and P = 60%, MI = 1.67 and MA = 1.0 for E. imbricata. This is the first report of N. travassosi parasitizing E. imbricata in South America. Finally, the retrieval of these parasites is a warning regarding the need for further studies to assess the impact of this parasitism on the health and conservation of sea turtles.

RESUMO As tartarugas marinhas são animais ameaçados de extinção que apresentam distribuição cosmopolita. Ações antrópicas têm sido consideradas causas importantes para a redução da população de tartarugas marinhas, mas aspectos naturais, como o parasitismo, também, podem contribuir para o seu declínio. Este estudo objetivou relatar a ocorrência de parasitos em tartarugas marinhas, encalhadas mortas, encontradas em uma área conhecida como Bacia Potiguar, nordeste do Brasil, de 2010 a 2019. Essas foram identificadas e classificadas de acordo com o comprimento da carapaça. Nas análises post mortem, todos os órgãos foram examinados, e os parasitos coletados e identificados morfologicamente. Foram calculados índices parasitários ecológicos, como prevalência (P), intensidade média (IM) e abundância média (AM). Um total de 80 Chelonia mydas e cinco Eretmochelys imbricata foi estudado. Neoctangium travassosi foi detectado em ambas as espécies, apresentando P = 20%, MI = 4,19 e MA = 0,84 para C. mydas e P = 60%, IM = 1,67 e AM = 1,0 para E. imbricata. Este é o primeiro relato de N. travassossi parasitando E. imbricata na América do Sul. Conclui-se que a recuperação desses parasitos soa como um alerta para a necessidade de mais estudos para avaliar o impacto desse parasitismo na saúde e na conservação das tartarugas marinhas.

RESUMO O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar características espermáticas in vitro e a taxa de concepção (TC) de sêmen convencional e sexado em um programa de IATF tradicional de vacas Nelore pós-parto. Todas a vacas (n=348) foram submetidas ao mesmo protocolo de IATF à base de estradiol e de progesterona. Após 48 horas da retirada do implante, foi determinada a expressão de estro dos animais e a IA foi realizada com sêmen convencional e sexado de dois touros Angus. As seguintes características espermáticas foram avaliadas: análise computadorizada do sêmen, teste hiposmótico, morfometria espermática e estrutura cromatínica por meio da coloração com azul de toluidina. A TC foi menor (P<0,001) para sêmen sexado comparado ao convencional, em vacas que expressaram estro (27 vs. 47%) e que não apresentaram estro (11 vs. 37%). A integridade da membrana plasmática (Touro 1: 30,3±9,6 vs. 52,3±12,4%, P=0,010; Touro 2: 24,5±3,0 vs. 48,7±1,6%, P=0,006) e a concentração espermática (Touro 1: 23,2±0,6 vs. 43,0±0,8x10⁶sperm/mL, P<0,001; Touro 2: 25,1±2,8 vs. 42,1±0,7x10⁶sperm/mL, P<0,001) foram menores no sêmen sexado comparado ao convencional, para ambos os touros. Motilidades total e progressiva foram menores no sêmen sexado comparado ao convencional para o Touro 1 (MT: 49,7±15,9 vs. 94,9±1,9%, P=0,007; MP: 16,7±3,4 vs. 44,1±13,2%, P=0,009), enquanto diferenças não foram detectadas no Touro 2 (MT: 45,0±17,5 vs. 68,2±19,1%, P=0,098; MP: 12,8±4,7 vs. 30,0±13,0%, P=0,065). Elipticidade espermática do sêmen sexado foi menor do que do sêmen convencional no Touro 2 (0,306±0,01 vs. 0,342±0,02, P=0,020), mas não houve diferença no Touro 1 (0,332±0,01 vs. 0,330±0,01, P=0,552). Reduzida fertilidade in vivo foi observada para o sêmen sexado em relação ao convencional, independentemente da expressão de cio das vacas. A qualidade seminal in vitro do sêmen sexado foi comprometida para ambos os touros, mas diferentemente afetada para cada reprodutor.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to assess in vitro sperm characteristics and pregnancies/AI (P/AI) of conventional and sex-sorted semen at timed-AI of suckled, multiparous Nelore cows. All cows (n=348) were submitted to a traditional estradiol/progesterone(P4)-based protocol. At 48h after P4-device removal, the estrous behavior was recorded, and AI was performed with conventional or sex-sorted semen from two bulls. The following sperm assessments were performed: CASA, Hyposmotic Test, sperm morphometry and chromatin structure by TB staining. P/AI were reduced (P<0.001) for sex-sorted compared to conventional semen in cows expressing estrus (27vs47%) or not (11vs.37%). Membrane integrity (Bull1: 30.3±9.6 vs. 52.3±12.4%, P=0.01; Bull2: 24.5±3.0 vs. 48.7±1.6%, P=0.006) and sperm concentration (Bull1: 23.2±0.6 vs. 43.0±0.8x10⁶sperm/mL, P<0.001; Bull2: 25.1±2.8 vs. 42.1±0.7x10⁶sperm/mL; P<0.001) were reduced in sex-sorted compared to conventional semen, for both bulls. Total and progressive motility were reduced in sex-sorted semen for Bull1 (TM: 49.7±15.9 vs. 94.9±1.9%, P=0.007; PM: 16.7±3.4 vs. 44.1±13.2%, P=0.009) and no differences were detected for Bull2 (TM: 45.0±17.5 vs. 68.2±19.1%, P=0.098; PM: 12.8±4.7 vs. 30.0±13.0%, P=0.065). Sperm ellipticity from sex-sorted was lower than conventional semen for Bull2 (0.306±0.01 vs. 0.342±0.02, P=0.02) and no difference was detected for Bull1 (0.332±0.01 vs. 0.330±0.01, P=0.55). Reduced in vivo fertility was observed for sex-sorted semen, regardless of estrous behavior. In vitro sperm quality of sex-sorted semen was compromised for both bulls, but differently affected for each sire.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a taxa de crescimento folicular e a taxa ovulatória em éguas tratadas com dispositivo intravaginal de progesterona (P4) durante o período de 10 dias, associado à utilização de benzoato de estradiol (BE). Os resultados foram comparados durante o período de transição (ET) da primavera com a época de reprodução no verão (ER). As variáveis foram submetidas à ANOVA (teste de Tukey), considerando-se P<0,05. Nenhuma ovulação ocorreu durante a permanência do dispositivo de P4 em ambos os períodos experimentais. A taxa ovulatória na ER foi de 100% (n = 8) e na ET, de 62,5% (n=5; P=0,0547). Diferença significativas (<0,001) foram observadas, em ambos os períodos experimentais, comparando as taxas de crescimento folicular durante a permanência da P4 (ER: 1,33 ± 0,89mm/d; ET: 1,00 ± 0,81mm/d) com o período sem P4 (ER: 3,63 ± 1,33mm/d; ET: 3,31 ± 1,66mm/d). O presente estudo demonstrou aplicabilidade e eficiência do protocolo hormonal utilizando dispositivo intravaginal de P4 e BE para controle folicular de éguas, tanto na ET quanto na ER.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate follicular growth and ovulatory rates in mares treated with an intravaginal progesterone device (P4) during the 10-day period, associated with the use of estradiol benzoate (EB). The results were compared during the transition period (ET) in the spring and the breeding season in the summer (ER). The variables were submitted to ANOVA (Tukey's test), considering P<0.05. No ovulation occurred during the permanence of the P4 implant in both experimental periods. The ovulatory rate in the ER was 100% (n = 8) and in the ET 62.5% (n = 5; P = 0.0547). Significant differences were observed (<0.001), in both periods, comparing follicular growth rates during the permanence of P4 device (ER: 1.33 ± 0.89mm/d; ET: 1.00 ± 0.81mm/d) to the period without P4 (ER: 3.63 ± 1.33 mm/d; ET: 3.31 ± 1.66 mm/d). The present study demonstrated applicability and efficiency of a hormonal protocol using P4 intravaginal device and EB for follicular control in mares, both during ET and ER.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar os resultados obtidos no exame andrológico a campo de touros Nelore (n=1257) de acordo com os critérios de avaliação de duas tabelas de classificação (uma tabela tradicional - tabela 1 - proposta em 1997 e uma nova tabela atualizada - tabela 2 - proposta em 2020). Os dados foram separados em três categorias: animais questionáveis nas tabelas 1 e 2 (Q1Q2), animais aprovados na tabela 1 e questionáveis na tabela 2 (A1Q2) e animais aprovados nas tabelas 1 e 2 (A1A2). Os parâmetros foram submetidos à análise de variância (P<0,05), por faixa etária. Observou-se maior (P<0,0001) PE no grupo A1A2 (18-24m=33,4±2,4cm; 24-36m=34,5±2,2cm; 36-48m=36,6±1,7cm; >48m=38,6±1,7cm) em comparação ao grupo A1Q2 (18-24m=29,05±0,98cm; 24-36m=30,3±0,6cm; 36-48m=32,9±1,0cm; >48m=34,8±1,0cm) e este maior (P<0,0001) que Q1Q2 (24-36m=26,8±2,0cm; 36-48m=30,0±0,1cm; >48m=31,3±1,1cm) em todas as idades. Nas faixas etárias 36-48m (Q1Q2=2,7±0,3; A1Q2=3,2±0,3; A1A2=3,3±0,6) e >48m (Q1Q2=3,0±0,4;A1Q2=3,3±0,5; A1A2=3,4±0,5), animais com melhor classificação andrológica apresentaram melhor (P<0,05) escore de condição corporal (ECC). Adicionalmente, na idade >48m, maiores motilidade (P=0,0250) e vigor (P=0,0335) foram observados nos animais A1Q2 (Mot=55,5±14,7%; V=3,21±0,82) e A1A2 (Mot=55,8±12,2%; V=3,23±0,81) comparados aos animais Q1Q2 (Mot=50,2±17,4%; V=2,77±0,82). Concluiu-se que touros aprovados na tabela com critérios mais rigorosos de classificação (tabela 2) apresentaram maior PE e ECC, independentemente da idade. Assim, a utilização de tabelas classificatórias atualizadas é fundamental para maior desenvolvimento do potencial reprodutivo de touros Nelore a campo.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to compare results of breeding soundness examination (BSE) of Nellore bulls (n=1257) according to evaluation criteria from two different classification tables (traditional-Table1 used since 1997 and an updated-Table2-proposed in 2020). Data were separated into 3 categories: questionable animals in Table1 and Table2 (Q1Q2), animals approved in Table1 and questionable in Table2 (A1Q2) and animals approved in Table1 and Table2 (A1A2). BSE parameters were submitted to ANOVA (P<005), according to age groups. Higher (P<0.0001) scrotal perimeter (PE) were observed in A1A2 category (18-24m=33.4±2.4cm; 24-36m=34.5±2.2cm; 36-48m=36.6±1.7cm; >48m=38.6±1.7cm) compared to A1Q2 (18-24m=29.05±0.98cm; 24-36m=30.3±0.6cm; 36-48m=32.9±1.0cm; >48m=34.8±1.0cm) and to Q1Q2 (24-36m=26.8±2.0cm; 36-48m=30.0±0.1cm; >48m=31.3±1.1cm), for all age groups. At the age of 36-48months (Q1Q2=2.7±0.3; A1Q2=3.2±0.3; A1A2=3.3±0.6) and >48months (Q1Q2=3.0±0.4; A1Q2=3.3±0.5; A1A2=3.4±0.5), animals with better andrological classifications presented higher (P<0.05) body condition score (BCS). Additionally, at age >48m, higher sperm Motility (P=0.0250) and Vigor (P=0.0335) were observed in animals A1Q2 (Mot=55.5±14.7%; V=3.21±0.82) and A1A2 (Mot=55.8±12.2%; V=3.23±0.81) compared to Q1Q2 (Mot=50.2±17.4%; V=2.77±0.82). It was concluded that bulls approved using strict selection criteria demonstrated higher PE and BCS, regardless of the age. The utilization of updated classification tables is highly recommended for further reproductive potential development of Nellore bulls in the field.

RESUMO: A rotação da cultura da soja ao arroz irrigado é alternativa para manejo de arroz-vermelho (Oryza sativa) resistente aos herbicidas do grupo químico das imidazolinonas. Objetivou-se avaliar a fitotoxicidade cultivares de soja contendo as tecnologias Cultivance® (CV) e tolerância às sulfonilureias (STS) e Roundup Ready® (RR), em decorrência do resíduo no solo de doses crescentes da mistura dos herbicidas imazapyr e imazapic, aplicados no manejo de plantas daninhas na cultura do arroz irrigado. O experimento foi realizado em campo, e os tratamentos consistiram de três cultivares de soja (BRS382CV, CD249STS e NA5909RR) e de cinco doses da mistura dos herbicidas imazapyr e imazapic (0, 49, 98, 196 e 392 g i.a. ha-1). As variáveis avaliadas foram fitotoxicidade, componentes da produtividade e qualidade fisiológica das sementes. O cultivar de soja BRS382CV é tolerante ao resíduo da mistura desses herbicidas, aplicado no manejo de arroz-vermelho na cultura do arroz irrigado, sendo os demais cultivares suscetíveis. A produtividade dos cultivares, os componentes de produtividade e a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja são afetados pelo aumento do resíduo da mistura dos herbicidas imazapyr e imazapic.

ABSTRACT: Soybean crop rotation with irrigated rice is an alternative for the management of weedy rice (Oryza sativa) resistant to herbicides from the imidazolinone chemical group. This work had the purpose to evaluate the phytotoxicity of soybean crops containing the technologies Cultivance® (CV) and tolerance to sulphonylurea and Roundup Ready® (RR), deriving from increasing doses of the imazapyr and imazapic herbicide mixture, applied in the irrigated rice crop management. Thus, the experiment was performed on field, where treatments consisted in three soybean cultivars (BRS382CV, CD249STS and NA5909RR) and five doses of the imazapyr and imazapic herbicides mixture (0, 49, 98, 196 and 392 g a.i. ha-1). The evaluated variables were phytotoxicity, yield components and physiological quality of the seeds. Soybean cultivar BRS382CV is tolerant to herbicide carryover, applied in the management of weedy rice in irrigated rice crops, but the other cultivars are susceptible to it. Cultivar productivity, yield components and physiological quality of the seeds are affected by the carryover increase of the imazapyr and imazapic herbicide mixture.

Foram utilizadas 77 ovelhas, divididas aleatoriamente em grupos de acordo com o período de parição e o manejo de amamentação [chuvoso: contínua (n=14) e controlada (n=13); seco: contínua (n=25) e controlada (n=13)]. O sistema de amamentação controlado, em ambos os períodos, resultou em decréscimo para as variáveis intervalos entre parto e primeiro estro (redução de 27,11 e 11,46 dias para os períodos chuvoso e seco, respectivamente; P<0,05) e entre parto e estro da concepção (redução de 12,81 e 13,58 dia para os períodos chuvoso e seco, respectivamente; P<0,05). Quanto ao desempenho ponderal dos cordeiros, o ganho de peso foi maior para os animais submetidos ao regime de amamentação controlada em relação à contínua, especialmente quando os nascimentos ocorreram no período chuvoso (17,83±0,56 vs. 13,95±0,52kg para o peso dos cordeiros aos 90 dias de idade, respectivamente; P<0,05). Contudo, o manejo de amamentação controlada é indicado para a região amazônica, por permitir menor tempo de puerpério das ovelhas e maior ganho de peso dos cordeiros.

Seventy-seven ewes were randomly divided into groups according to parturition season and suckling mode [Rainy season: continuous (n=14) and controlled (n=13); Dry season: continuous (n=25) and controlled (n=25)]. The controlled suckling mode, in both seasons, resulted in a decrease in variables, intervals between parturition and first estrus (reduction of 27.11 and 11.46 days for rainy and dry season, respectively; P<0.05) and between parturition and estrus of conception (reduction of 12.81 and 13.58 days, for rainy and dry season, respectively; P<0.05). As to the lambs, the weight gain was higher in animals subjected to controlled suckling in relation to continuous, especially when lambing occurred in the rainy season (17.83±0.56 vs. 13.95±0.52kg for Lambs' weight at 90 days old, respectively; P<0.05). Therefore, it was concluded that controlled suckling management is better indicated for the Amazonian region, since it allows the ewes to have a shorter puerperium period and the lambs exhibit higher weight gain.

O objetivo desse estudo foi realizar um ensaio toxicológico pré-clínico para analisar a toxicidade do chá das folhas de Morus nigra L. (Moraceae). A toxicidade subcrônica do chá (CF-Mn) foi avaliada durante 30 dias por via oral em ratos. Ao grupo controle foi administrado água, para comparação. Durante o período experimental foi avaliada a presença de sinais de toxicidade, variação do peso corporal, e o consumo de líquido e alimento. Ao final do experimento o sangue dos animais foi retirado para análise de parâmetros hematológicos e bioquímicos. Não foram observados mortalidade e sinais de toxicidade indicando baixa toxicidade da planta. Não houve alterações nos parâmetros hematológicos e bioquímicos. Nas condições do estudo, o CF-Mn pode ser considerado de baixa toxicidade, pois não produziu efeitos tóxicos nos animais tratados.

The aim of this study was to carry out a pre-clinical toxicological assay to analyze the toxicity of tea from the leaves of Morus nigra L. (Moraceae). The subchronic toxicity of this tea (CF-Mn) was orally evaluated during 30 days in rats. The control group was given water for comparison. During the experimental period, signs of toxicity, body weight variation, and water and food consumption were assessed. At the end of the experiment, the blood of animals was removed for analysis of hematological and biochemical parameters. No mortality and no toxicity signs were observed, indicating low toxicity of the plant. There was no alteration in the hematological and biochemical parameters. Under the study conditions, CF-Mn can be considered of low toxicity since it did not produce toxic effects in treated animals.

Foram utilizados dados de pedigree de 2.558 bovinos da raça Gir Mocha nascidos no período de 1954 a 2005. As análises foram realizadas utilizando-se o programa Endog. Do total de animais estudados, 61,9%; 10,6% e 0,1% possuíam pedigree na primeira, segunda e terceira gerações, respectivamente.O número efetivo de rebanhos que forneceram machos reprodutores foi de 10,25 para pais e 3,87 para avôs, confirmando a baixa integralidade do pedigree. O número de animais fundadores foi de 975,5, e o número efetivo de fundadores de 141,34. O número de ancestrais na população referência foi de 924 animas, dos quais apenas 39 explicaram 50% da variabilidade genética da população.O coeficiente médio de relação foi estimado em 0,75%, sendo o maior coeficiente individual de 25%. O coeficiente de endogamia foi igual a zero de 1954 a 1984. Vale salientar que, neste período, estão incluídos os animais sem ascendência conhecida. A endogamia e o coeficiente médio de relação da população foram baixos, contudo podem estar subestimados em razão da pequena integralidade do pedigree.

In this study we used data from the 2558 pedigree cattle polled Gir born from 1954 to 2005. Analyses were performed using the Endog program. Of all animals studied, 61.86%, 10.56% and 0.10% had a pedigree in the first, second and third generation, respectively. The effective number of herds that provide breeding males was 10.25 for parents and 3.87 for grandparents, corroborating the low completeness of the pedigree. The number of founder animals was 975.5 and the effective number of founders were 141.34. The number of ancestors in the reference population was 924 animals from which only 39 accounted for 50% of the genetic variability of the population. The average relationship coefficient was estimated at 0.75%, the largest individual coefficient was 25%. The inbreeding coefficient was zero from 1954 to 1894. It is noteworthy that during this period included the population was low, but may be underestimated because of the small pedigree integrity.

RESUMO Com o objetivo de avaliar a reação de germoplasma de girassol ao fungo Septoria helianthi, foi realizado um estudo sob condições de campo em uma área experimental na Universidade Fede-ral de Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS, no ano de 2008. O ensaio foi constituído por vinte e quatro genótipos de girassol semeados manualmente nas parcelas, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Foi realizado o cálculo da taxa de progresso da doença e da área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD) baseado nos dados de severidade nos terços inferior, mé dio e superior das plantas. As cultivares mais resistentes, isto é, que apresentaram menor AACPD foram PARAÍSO 33 seguida por HLE 16, HLE 17, EXP 1452 CL, V 20041 e SRM 840.

ABSTRACT With the objective of evaluating the reaction of sunflower germplasm in relation to the resistance of Septoria helianthi, a study was conducted under field conditions in an experimental area at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 2008. The experiment involved 24 genotypes of sunflower, sown by hand in randomized blocks with 4 replications. The rate of disease progress and the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) were calculated based on the severity of the disease in the lower, middle and upper thirds of the plants. The more resistant cultivars were PARDISE 33 followed by HLE 16, HLE 17, EXP 1452 CL, V 20041 and SRM 840.

The fractal dimension has been employed as a useful parameter in the diagnosis of retinal disease. Avakian et al. (Curr Eye Res 2002; 24: 274-280), comparing the vascular pattern of normal patients with mild to moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), found a significant difference between them only in the macular region. This significant difference in the box-counting fractal dimension of the macular region between normal and mild NPDR patients has been proposed as a method of precocious diagnosis of NPDR. The aim of the present study was to determine if fractal dimensions can really be used as a parameter for the early diagnosis of NPDR. Box-counting and information fractal dimensions were used to parameterize the vascular pattern of the human retina. The two methods were applied to the whole retina and to nine anatomical regions of the retina in 5 individuals with mild NPDR and in 28 diabetic but opthalmically normal individuals (controls), with age between 31 and 86 years. All images of retina were obtained from the Digital Retinal Images for Vessel Extraction (DRIVE) database. The results showed that the fractal dimension parameter was not sensitive enough to be of use for an early diagnosis of NPDR.

Twenty six Santa Inês ewes were asigned to three treatments to evaluate the efficiency of the Ovsynch protocol. In the treatment 1 - control (n= 8), the estrus was synchronized with sponges containing 60 mg MAP for 14 days. On D14, 300 IU eCG were administered. In treatment 2 (n= 9) the Ovsynch protocol was used: 25 µg of GnRH (D0), 37.5 µg of PGF2alpha (D7) and 25 µg of GnRH (D9). In treatment 3 (n= 9) the modified Ovsynch protocol was used: the administration of PGF2alpha and second GnRH as two days early. Estrus detection was accomplished using teaser. All ewes were mated twice with 12 hours of interval. Pregnancy rate (PR) was evaluated by ultrasonography 30 days after the end of mating. Estrus response was of 88.46% on average, and without differences among treatments (p>0.05). The interval for onset of estrus was greater (p<0.05) in T1, when compared with T2 and T3 (41.31±7.2, 13.37±8.42 and 6.75±5.2 h, respectively). The time of receptivity was greater (p<0.05) in females of T1 and T3 (40.5±6.49 h and 53.68±10.27 h, respectively), compared to females of T2 (34.56±7.2 h). The duration of the induced estrus did not differ significant among treatments (p>0.05). Pregnancy rate was significantly greater (p<0.05) in ewes synchronized with Ovsynch protocol (37.5%, 62.5% and 25% for treatment 1, 2 and 3, respectively). The results show superior efficiency of the Ovsynch protocol, under the experimental conditions.

Foram utilizadas 26 ovelhas Santa Inês cíclicas. No tratamento 1, controle (n= 8), utilizou-se esponja com MAP por 14 dias e 300UI eCG (D14). No tratamento 2 (n= 9) foi empregado o protocolo Ovsynch: 25 µg de GnRH (D0), 37,5 µg de PGF2alfa (D7) e 25 µg de GnRH (D9). No tratamento 3 (n= 9) utilizou-se o protocolo Ovsynch adaptado, antecipando em 2 dias as aplicações de PGF2alfa e GnRH. A detecção de estro foi feita com auxílio de rufiões tendo início no T1, 12 h após o término do tratamento e no T2 e T3, imediatamente após a aplicação de PGF2alfa. Todas as ovelhas em estro foram cobertas duas vezes com intervalo de 12 horas. A taxa de prenhez (TP) foi avaliada por ultra-sonografia, 30 dias após a última cobertura. Do total de fêmeas sincronizadas, 88,46% em média, apresentaram estro, não evidenciando diferença entre os grupos (p>0,05). O intervalo entre o final do tratamento e o início do estro foi maior (p<0,05) no grupo T1, que no T2 e T3 (41,31±7,2, 13,37±8,42 e 6,75±5,2 h, respectivamente). O tempo de receptividade foi maior (p<0,05) nas fêmeas dos grupos T1 e T3 (40,5±6,49 h e 53,68±10,27 h, respectivamente), comparado às fêmeas do grupo T2 (34,56±7,2 h). A duração do estro não demonstrou diferença (p>0,05) entre tratamentos. A TP diferiu entre os grupos (37,5%, 62,5% e 25%, respectivamente. p<0,05). Os resultados mostram eficiência superior do protocolo Ovsynch, sob as restantes condições expe-rimentais.

The Delphi technique has been used since the 1950s to collect the opinions of experts; to gauge their indications, and in some instances, to develop a consensus. This systematic collection and aggregation of informed judgments from a group of experts on specific questions or issues is a highly efficient and cost-effective means to establish guidelines and policies, when compared to other strategies, such as committee meetings or personal interviews. OBJECTIVE: Examine the content validation process of the proposed criteria of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) for amikacin use in hospital settings. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Delphi technique was applied using the proposed ASHP criteria questionnaire containing 102 specific questions related to the nosocomial use of amikacin by individual patients. The questionnaire contained six groups of questions: 1) Identification and basic demographic data, 2) Relevant data for the use of amikacin, 3) Justification of its usage, 4) Critical parameters of amikacin use, 5) Complications, 6) Measurement of results. Eight hospital specialist medical doctors were selected, including five in the area of infectious diseases, one surgeon, one nephrologist and one in critical care medicine. The questionnaire was e-mailed to the doctors and they were asked for their opinion about the appropriateness of the questions. They were to say whether the general concept seemed totally or partially adequate to the proposed process, what grade (0 to 10) they would give to each section, and if there were any perceived deficiencies, they could add, omit or modify individual questions. A second questionnaire containing the questions for which there had been no consensus based on the answers to the previous one was re-sent to the participants for consolidation. RESULTS: Feedback revealed an agreement of 75% concerning the utility and appropriateness of sections 1 and 2. The section about the justification of amikacin usage was agreed on by 50%. There was a total agreement of 62% for the critical parameters of amikacin use, and a partial agreement of 37%. The complication of usage of the questionnaire was agreed upon by 50% of the participants, and positive measurement of the results was totally agreed on by 62%, and partially by 37%. The overall score for the questionnaire was 8.77 ± 0.25. CONCLUSION: The usage criteria for amikacin recommended by ASHP were validated by the Delphi technique for utilization in Brazilian hospital settings. The Delphi technique applied to validate a questionnaire instrument for monitoring the correct use of a specific strategic antibiotic indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of serious antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, proved to be a reliable and simple tool for designing guidelines and a consensus document for hospital use of antibiotics.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever o quadro clínico de um cão com suspeita de leptospirose e os resultados dos exames específicos e complementares para leptospirose. A anamnese revelou que o animal apresentou episódios de vômito e dificuldade em apreender alimentos sólidos e líquidos. No exame clínico foi constatada desidratação de 5-7%, sensibilidade abdominal, hematoemese, melena, diarréia, necrose na língua, sialorréia e dificuldade de deglutição. Todos os exames considerados específicos, bacteriológico, direto da urina em microscópio de campo escuro, soroaglutinação microscópica e imunoperoxidase indireta do rim apresentaram resultados positivos. A estirpe de Leptospira isolada foi identificada como sorovar Canicola. Os exames complementares revelaram leucocitose com neutrofilia, hipocalcemia, hipoalbuminemia e valores séricos de uréia, creatinina e fosfatos acima dos valores normais enquanto a urinálise revelou proteinúria, leucocitúria e presença de células renais. As alterações renais encontradas no HE foram nefrite intersticial crônica e glomerulite com espessamento da membrana basal. Os sinais clínicos observados e os resultados dos exames laboratoriais indicaram um quadro predominantemente renal, compatível com a infecção pelo sorovar Canicola.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical features of a dog with leptospirosis suspicion, and results of specific and complementary laboratorial tests for leptospirosis. Anamnesis revealed that the animal presented vomiting, difficulty to apprehend both solid and liquid food. In the clinical examination, there was verified dehydration from 5 to 7%, hematoemesis, melena, diarrhea, tong necrosis, sialorrhea and difficulty swallowing. All the specific tests, bacteriologic, direct examination of urine in dark field microscopy, microscopic agglutination test and indirect immunoperoxidase, were positive. The Leptospira strain isolated was identified as serovar Canicola. The complementary tests revealed leukocytosis with neutrophilia, hypocalcemia, hypalbuminemia and blood values of urea, creatinine and phosphates over the normal values while urinalysis showed proteinuria, leukocyturia and presence of kidney cells. Kidney lesions found in HE were chronic interstitial nephritis and glomerulitis with thickened basement membrane. The clinical signs and the results of laboratorial tests found in this study indicated to predominantly to renal feature, consistent with an infection by serovar Canicola.
