One of the main phenomena causing problems in the oil industry is the precipitation of waxes, which can crystallize and form deposits, clogging lines and reducing flows. Many studies have been conducted seeking to overcome this problem, mainly through application of chemical to increase flow. Some studies have shown that the asphaltenes present in crude oil can also be involved in the process of wax deposition. In this study, model systems were investigated to determine the influence of a natural additive, a chemical additive and their combined use on the fluidity of the samples. The natural additive, consisting of a refinery asphalt residue (ASPR), was studied in relation to the influence of its aggregation states on the fluidity of the wax model systems. All samples were evaluated through the pour point test, according to the ASTM D-97 standard. The results indicated that both the ASPR and the commercial poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) can improve the fluidity. Synergistic effect, using both together, was verified by the significant reduction of pour point for model systems with wax content as high as 13% m v-1. That action was closely related to the concentration of ASPR and its aggregation state, as indicated by tests with different wax concentrations.

Predicting the compatibility of crude oils from different streams can be done by applying models that use the solubility parameter of the oils. The approximate solubility parameter value of a given crude oil can be calculated by observing the asphaltene precipitation onset caused by titration with n-heptane. For oils whose precipitation onset is not well defined, a small quantity of another petroleum with easily detected onset can be added. It would be ideal to always use the same petroleum for this addition, but this is obviously not possible. The purpose of this study was to replace this petroleum by a synthetic molecule. Therefore, molecules were selected and synthesized to obtain structures containing aromatic ring, aliphatic chain and heteroatom. The molecules were characterized by infrared spectrometry, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and gel permeation chromatography. Nitrated cardanol, polycardanol obtained by addition polymerization (PCA) and nitrated PCA presented the desired behavior. However, the concentration of the molecule in toluene needs to be adjusted in function of the characteristics of the petroleum. For a particular crude oil, when model molecule present solubility in a wider solubility parameter range, lower concentration will require to identify the precipitation onset of that oil.

Resultados: Foram incluídos no estudo 60 pacientes.
Abstract Objective: To validate the Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea Screening tool for use in Brazil. Materials and methods: The Brazilian version of this questionnaire, originally validated and tested in the United States, was developed as follows: (a) translation; (b) back-translation; (c) completion of the final version; (d) pre-testing. The questionnaire was applied prior to polysomnography to children aged 3-9 years from October 2015 to October 2016, and its psychometric properties (i.e., validity and reliability) were evaluated. The accuracy was assessed from comparisons between polysomnographic results and corresponding questionnaire scores. Results: Sixty patients were enrolled, and based on polysomnographic findings, 48% patients had normal apnea-hypopnea index, while the remaining 52% met the criteria for obstructive sleep apnea. Minimum O2 saturation level was significantly lower among obstructive sleep apnea children (p = 0.021). Satisfactory concordance was found between individual apnea-hypopnea index and questionnaire scores. Bland-Altman plot-derived bias was 0.1 for the difference between measures, with 5.34 (95% CI: 4.14-6.55) and −5.19 (95%CI: −6.39 to −3.98) for the upper and lower agreement range. Internal consistency derived from Cronbach's alpha was 0.84 (95%CI: 0.78-0.90). Conclusion: The questionnaire was translated to and validated into Brazilian-Portuguese version, and showed good reliability and concordance with apnea-hypopnea index. This questionnaire offers a reliable screening option for sleep-disordered breathing in children.

Crude oils containing large quantities of waxes, and in situations where sudden temperature drops occur, a crystalline network can be formed, generating flow difficulties in production, transfer and offloading lines. Despite the scientific and economic importance of this phenomenon, correlations between the behavior of petroleum in relation to its pour point are scarce in the literature. In this work, nine crude oil samples were characterized regarding density, water content, wax fraction (one- and two-dimensional chromatography), pour point, yield stress and wax appearance temperature. The results showed that the storage conditions and oil characteristics had a strong influence on the pour point. Yield stress was influenced by initial temperature of the sample, cooling rate and shear rate during cooling. Finally, the content of aromatic compounds in oil with low concentration of n-alkanes can contribute to increase the pour point.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the functional capacity of elderly individuals and its determinants. METHODS: A cross-sectional, population-based study was conducted with a sample of 397 elderly residents in the urban area of the city of Ubá, Minas Gerais. A semi-structured, pre-tested questionnaire was applied as an interview in order to assess the sociodemographic, economic and health characteristics of elderly individuals. The functional capacity was assessed by means of the scale of basic and instrumental activities of daily living. The associations between functional capacity and socioeconomic, demographic and epidemiological characteristics were investigated. Data were analyzed with the softwares Epi Info version 6.0 and SigmaStat. A significance level of 0.05 was considered. For statistical analysis, frequency distribution and measures of association (odds ratio) were performed between the functional capacity and the socioeconomic, demographic and epidemiological variables. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted. RESULTS: The impaired functional capacity was related to self-referred deteriorated health conditions, falls, female gender, widowhood, more advanced age, low educational level and income, and retirement from the job market. CONCLUSION: The lack of integral health care for the elderly, especially those without financial resources, can contribute negatively to worsened health conditions, especially functional capacity.

Iron is a vital element in the human metabolism. It plays a central role in erythropoiesis and is also involved in many other intracellular processes in all the tissues of the body. Blood donation results in a substantial (200 to 250 ng) loss of iron at each donation (425 to 475 ml) with subsequent mobilization of iron from body deposits. Repetitive donations of blood my cause the depletion of iron reserves in blood donors and thus cause health disorders. Recent reports have shown that iron reserves are generally small and iron depletion is more common in blood donors than in non-donors. The high frequency of iron deficiency in blood donors reported by these studies suggests a need for more accurate studies, as measurement of hemoglobin and hematicrit alone is insufficient to identify and exclude prospective blood donors with iron deficiency but without anemia. It is important, therefore, that blood banks evaluate the risk-benefit of implanting tests to analyze organism iron reserves such as the measurement of serum ferritin of all individuals who donate more than three times per year in order to make the blood donation process safer for both donors and transfused patients.
