Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by endothelial dysfunction that causes micro- and macrovascular complications. Low intensity therapeutic ultrasound (LITUS) may improve endothelial function, but its effects have not been investigated in these patients. The aim of our study was to compare the effects of pulsed (PUT) and continuous (CUT) waveforms of LITUS on the endothelium-dependent vasodilation of T2DM patients. The present randomized crossover trial had a sample of twenty-three patients (7 men) diagnosed with T2DM, 55.6 (±9.1) years old, with a body mass index of 28.6 (±3.3) kg/m2. All patients were randomized and submitted to different waveforms (Placebo, CUT, and PUT) of LITUS and the arterial endothelial function was evaluated. The LITUS of 1 MHz was applied in pulsed (PUT: 20% duty cycle, 0.08 W/cm2 SATA), continuous (CUT: 0.4 W/cm2 SPTA), and Placebo (equipment off) types of waves during 5 min on the brachial artery. Endothelial function was evaluated using the flow-mediated dilation (FMD) technique. PUT (mean difference 2.08%, 95% confidence interval 0.65 to 3.51) and CUT (mean difference 2.32%, 95% confidence interval 0.89 to 3.74) increased the %FMD compared to Placebo. In the effect size analysis, PUT (d=0.65) and CUT (d=0.65) waveforms presented moderate effects in the %FMD compared to Placebo. The vasodilator effect was similar in the different types of waves. Pulsed and continuous waveforms of LITUS of 1 MHz improved the arterial endothelial function in T2DM patients.

RESUMO: O método fitossociológico permite avaliar a composição da vegetação. Objetivou-se neste estudo identificar e quantificar as principais plantas daninhas ocorrentes na cultura do arroz irrigado. O levantamento fitossociológico foi realizado no município de Itaqui-RS, entre 2013 e 2014, em três propriedades, em que predomina a monocultura e tecnologia Clearfield®. Em cada propriedade foi selecionada uma área representativa de ½ ha, onde foram realizadas 10 amostragens aleatórias, utilizando quadrado inventário (1 m2). A coleta ocorreu em duas épocas: durante o crescimento inicial da cultura e na pré-colheita do cereal. Após cada coleta, as plantas foram identificadas, sendo registradas a frequência, frequência relativa, densidade, densidade relativa, abundância, abundância relativa, índice de importância relativa e índice de similaridade. No total, foram identificadas 11 espécies de plantas daninhas, pertencentes a cinco famílias. As famílias Poaceae e Cyperaceae ocorreram com maior frequência. Durante o crescimento inicial do arroz, observou-se amplo índice de importância relativa da família Poaceae, principalmente para Echinochloa crus-galli, Echinochloa colona e Digitaria horizontalis. De modo geral, houve redução na densidade de plantas no período de pré-colheita. No entanto, Echinochloa colona e Oryza sativa ocorreram em níveis de densidade que podem interferir na produtividade do cereal. Aeschynomene denticulata, Cyperus iria e Oryza sativa não são controladas de modo eficiente, indicando possíveis casos de resistência a herbicidas. Salienta-se a importância da correta identificação das espécies para o manejo de Echinochloa colona e Cyperus ferax. São necessárias práticas de manejo integrado para controle eficiente das plantas daninhas, evitando perdas de produtividade em lavouras de arroz irrigado da região.

ABSTRACT: The phytosociological method helps evaluate the vegetation composition. The objective of this study was to identify and quantify the main weed species present in irrigated rice. The phytosociological survey was carried out in three mainly rice monoculture, Clearfield® technology using properties in Itaqui-RS, between 2013 and 2014. For each property and period, a ½ ha representative area was selected and 10 random samples were collected, using a quadrat square of 1 m2. The sample colletion was conducted in two periods of time: during the irrigated rice crop initial growth and during the cereal’s pre-harvesting phase. All collected plants were identified and counted, allowing for their frequency, relative frequency, density, relative density, abundance, relative abundance, relative importance index and similarity index to be calculated. Eleven weed species belonging to five families were identified. Poaceae and Cyperaceae occurred more frequently. During the initial growth of rice, the Poaceae family presented the largest index of relative importance, mainly to Echinochloa crus-galli, Echinochloa colona and Digitaria horizontalis. Overall, there was a reduction in plant density in the pre-harvest period. However, Echinochloa colona and Oryza sativa occurred in density levels that may interfere with the cereal yield. Aeschynomene denticulata, Cyperus iria and Oryza sativa are not controlled efficiently, indicating possible cases of herbicide resistance. Our conclusions emphasize the importance of correct weed species identification for the management of Echinochloa colona and Cyperus ferax. Integrated management practices are necessary for efficient weed control, avoiding productivity loss in the region’s flooded rice fields.

Loque americana é uma grave doença de propagação mundial em abelhas causada pelo Paenibacillus larvae. Extratos de plantas são conhecidos por diminuir ou inibir o crescimento dessa bactéria. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade antimicrobiana dos extratos de Calendula. officinalis, Cariniana domestica, e Nasturtium officinale contra o P. larvae e avaliar a toxicidade dos extratos em abelhas. A atividade in vitro dos extratos contra P. larvae foi avaliada pelo método de microdiluição e as concentrações inibitórias mínimas (MICs) também foram determinadas. As concentrações utilizadas no ensaio de toxicidade foram estabelecidas baseadas nos valores de MIC e pelo método de aplicação por pulverização. O P. larvae foi suscetível aos extratos brutos de C. officinalis e N. officinale avaliados. Para a C. domestica, apenas as frações acetato de etila (EtAc) e butanólica (BuOH) tiveram atividade contra P. larvae. Análises de toxicidade em abelhas não mostraram toxidade para o extrato bruto de N. officinale e fração BuOH de C. domestica durante os 15 dias de tratamento, no entanto, ocorreram algumas mortes de abelhas durante os três primeiros dias de tratamento com C. officinalis e fração EtAc de C. domestica. Os resultados com essas espécies foram pela primeira vez descritos e mostraram que o extrato bruto de N. officinale e a fração BuOH de C. domestica ambos não apresentaram efeitos tóxicos nas concentrações testadas pelo método de aplicação por pulverização e podem ser uma alternativa útil para o tratamento ou prevenção da loque americana.

American foulbrood (AFB) is a serious worldwide spreading disease in bees caused by Paenibacillus larvae. Plants extracts are known to decrease or inhibit the growth of these bacteria. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Calendula. officinalis, Cariniana domestica, and Nasturtium officinale extracts against the P. larvae and to evaluate the toxicity of the extracts in bees. In vitro activity against P. larvae of the extracts was evaluated by micro dilution method and the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were also determined. The concentrations used in the toxicity test were established based on the MIC values and by the spraying application method. The P. larvae was susceptible to the evaluated crude extract of C. officinalis and N. officinale. To C. domestica, only the ethyl acetate (EtAc) fraction and n-butanol (BuOH) fractions had activity against P. larvae. Toxicity analysis in bees showed no toxicity for N. officinale crude extract and for C. domestica BuOH fraction during 15 days of treatment, however, some deaths of bees occurred during the first three days of treatment with C. officinalis and C. domestica EtAc fraction. The results with these species were firstly described and showed that N. officinale crude extract and C. domestica BuOH fraction both presented not toxic effects in the concentration tested by the spraying application method, and can be a useful alternative for treatment or prevention of AFB.

Foram colhidas amostras de 100 carcaças em um frigorífico exportador, localizado no interior do estado de São Paulo, amostradas ao longo de um ano, por meio do método de esponjas, aplicado na região do peito do animal. As amostras foram colhidas em três pontos, denominados A, B e C, sendo cada carcaça amostrada nos três pontos, localizados nas etapas: pós-sangria (A); pós-esfola (B) e pós-lavagem (C). Foram realizadas pesquisas de Listeria sp., E. coli O157, Salmonella spp. e microrganismos indicadores (Petrifilms® AC, EC e EB). Não foram isolados Listeria ou E. coli O157 em nenhuma das 300 amostras. Salmonella spp. foi isolada em nove, sendo oito no ponto A e uma no ponto B. Para mesófilos, as contagens variaram de 0 a 6,8 log UFC/cm², para coliformes totais, de 0 a 4,57 log UFC/cm², e para E. coli, de 0 a 4,38 log UFC/cm². Diante dos resultados obtidos e em comparação com a literatura, conclui-se que o estabelecimento estudado apresenta qualidade, tanto sanitária (devido às baixas prevalências dos patógenos) quanto higiênica (devido à acentuada diminuição da carga microbiana de indicadores ao longo da linha).

Samples were collected from 100 carcasses in a slaughterhouse exporter, located within the State of São Paulo, sampled over a year through the sponge method, applied to the chest of the animal. Samples were taken at three points, denominated A, B and C, each carcass sampled at three points located in the following steps: after bleeding (A) after skinning (B) and after washing (C). Research was conducted for Listeria sp., E. coli O157, Salmonella spp. and Micro-organism (Petrifilms ® AC, EC and EB). Listeria or E. coli O157 were not isolated in any of the 300 samples. Salmonella spp. was isolated in nine, eight at point A and one at point B. For Mesophiles, scores ranged from 0 to 6.8 log UFC/cm²; for Total coliforms, 0 to 4.57 log UFC/cm² and E. coli from 0 to 4.38 log UFC/cm². With the results obtained and compared with the literature, it is concluded that the establishment in this study has both sanitary quality (due to the low prevalence of pathogens) and hygienic quality (due to the sharp decrease in the microbial load of indicators along the line.

The calculation with rotational elliptic coordinates of the streaming potential in the vicinity of a disk-shaped sample rotating in an electrolytic solution is presented. The measurement of this streaming potential is used to determine the zeta potential of planar surfaces. Rotational elliptic coordinates are favored in relation to integral transform methods because only simple mathematical methods are employed to explain the theory of this technique.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi estudar a importância da vacinação de marrecos de Pequim (Anas platyrhynchos) contra a Doença de Newcastle (DN). Foram utilizados 120 marrecos, distribuídos aleatoriamente em 4 grupos, vacinados ou não. Aos 60 dias de idade, todos os grupos foram desafiados com uma suspensão de vírus patogênico (VDN), EID50 = 108,15/0,1 mL e um grupo de aves livres de patógenos específicos (SPF) foi utilizado como controle do vírus . Suabes cloacais e traqueais foram colhidos após 6, 14, 20 e 30 dias após o desafio para isolamento viral, realizado em ovos embrionados SPF. Os marrecos de Pequim de nenhum dos grupos demonstraram sinais clínicos da DN, mostrando-se refratários à doença clínica. Nos marrecos do grupo controle, o isolamento viral foi positivo de 20 até 30 dias após o desafio, sugerindo o possível estado de portador do VDN pelos marrecos de Pequim. Foi realizado o isolamento viral em 100% das aves SPF, que apresentaram sinais clínicos e vieram a óbito após o desafio com o VDN. Nos grupos vacinados, o isolamento do VDN foi nulo. Tais dados demonstraram a importância da vacinação para o controle da disseminação do vírus pelos marrecos de Pequim infectados pelo VDN.

ABSTRACT This study aimed the characterization of the importance of vaccination against Newcastle disease of white Pekin duck (Anas platyrhynchos). There were used 120 Pekin ducks, distributed at random into 4 groups, vaccinated or not. At 60 days of age, all groups were challenged with a pathogenic virus (NDV) suspension, EID50 = 108.15/0.1 mL and a group of Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) chicks were used as control of the virus. Cloacal and tracheal swabs from each bird were collected after 6, 14, 20 and 30 days post-challenge for viral isolation in SPF embryonated eggs. White Pekin ducks of all groups did not demonstrate symptoms of the Newcastle Disease (ND). They were refractory to the ND clinical disease. In Pekin ducks from control group, the viral isolation was obtained from 20 up to 30 days after challenge. The NDV isolation was possible in 100% of SPF chicks that died after challenge with ND clinical signs, suggesting the possible state of carrier of NDV by Pekin ducks. In vaccinated groups, the viral isolation was null. It was also demonstrated therefore the relevance of the vaccination to control the virus dissemination by white Pekin ducks infected with NDV.

The photophysical properties of zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPC) and chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (AlPHCl) incorporated into liposomes of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine in the presence and absence of additives such as cholesterol or cardiolipin were studied by time-resolved fluorescence, laser flash photolysis and steady-state techniques. The absorbance of the drugs changed linearly with drug concentration, at least up to 5.0 µM in homogeneous and heterogeneous media, indicating that aggregation did not occur in these media within this concentration range. The incorporation of the drugs into liposomes increases the dimerization constant by one order of magnitude (for ZnPC, 3.6 x 10(4) to 1.0 x 10(5) M-1 and for AlPHCl, 3.7 x 10(4) to 1.5 x 10(5) M-1), but this feature dose does not rule out the use of this carrier, since the incorporation of these hydrophobic drugs into liposomes permits their systemic administration. Probe location in biological membranes and predominant positions of the phthalocyanines in liposomes were inferred on the basis of their fluorescence and triplet state properties. Both phthalocyanines are preferentially distributed in the internal regions of the liposome bilayer. The additives affect the distribution of these drugs within the liposomes, a fact that controls their delivery when both are used in a biological medium, retarding their release. The addition of the additives to the liposomes increases the internalization of phthalocyanines. The interaction of the drugs with a plasma protein, bovine serum albumin, was examined quantitatively by the fluorescence technique. The results show that when the drugs were incorporated into small unilamellar liposomes, the association with albumin was enhanced when compared with organic media, a fact that should increase the selectivity of tumor targeting by these phthalocyanines (for ZnPC, 0.71 x 10(6) to 1.30 x 10(7) M-1 and for AlPHCl, 4.86 x 10(7) to 3.10 x 10(8) M-1).
