Resumo Cycnoches haagii é uma orquídea epífita alvo de muitos coletores, mas nenhuma referência foi encontrada na literatura sobre sua biologia reprodutiva. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi obter informações preliminares sobre os tipos de polinização e sua influência na viabilidade das sementes desta orquídea nativa do Cerrado brasileiro, a fim de viabilizar futuros programas de multiplicação e preservação. Foram realizadas polinizações entre flores da mesma planta (geitonogamia) ou plantas diferentes (xenogamia). As sementes obtidas das cápsulas foram semeadas em meio B&G, com concentração total e parcial de sais. Sementes de geitonogamia resultaram em 25% dos protocormos albinos e consequentemente em plântulas albinas. Este fenômeno não ocorreu em sementes oriundas de polinização xenogâmica. A análise de pigmentos mostrou que mesmo as plântulas albinas apresentaram clorofilas e carotenoides, porém em concentrações significativamente menores, 16% e 37% respectivamente, em relação às plântulas pigmentadas. A polinização geitonogâmica deve ser evitada em programas de propagação da orquídea C. haagii devido à origem de plântulas albinas. Além disso, a polinização xenogâmica mostrou-se um método muito interessante para a obtenção de mudas com fenótipo albino, material vegetal muito intrigante para futuras investigações.

Abstract Cycnoches haagii Barb. Rodr. is an epiphytic orchid very targeted by collectors, but no reference was found in the literature about its reproductive biology. Thus, the purpose of this study was to obtain initial information regarding pollination types and its influence on seed viability of this native orchid of the Brazilian Cerrado, in order to enable future propagation and preservation programs. Pollination among flowers of the same plant (geitonogamy) or different plants (xenogamy) were carried out. Seeds extracted from the capsules were sown in B&G medium, with full and half strength. Seeds from geitonogamic resulted in 25% of albino protocorms and consequently in albino seedlings. This phenomenon did not occur in seedlings derived from xenogamic pollination. Pigment analysis showed that even the albino seedlings presented chlorophylls and carotenoids, however, in significantly minor concentrations, 16% and 37% respectively, in relation to green seedlings. Geitonogamic and xenogamic pollinations resulted in C. haagii viable seeds with high germination percentage (90%) under in vitro conditions. The germination of seeds from xenogamic pollination resulted in chlorophyll or normal seedlings only, and can be recommended at conservation programs. On the other hand, although geitonogamic pollination should be avoided at conservation programs of this orchid species as it leads to albino seedlings, it showed a very interesting system to obtain seedlings with this phenotype, an interesting plant material to future investigation.

Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar a efetividade de ácidos fúlvicos e aminoácidos livres sobre o paclobutrazol no florescimento da mangueira ‘Keitt’ cultivada no semiárido. O experimento foi conduzido em pomar de mangueira cv. Keitt, em Cabrobó-PE, entre novembro de 2017 e setembro de 2018. O clima do local é classificado como Bswh (Köeppen), uma região semiárida. O delineamento foi em blocos, ao acaso com tratamentos distribuídos em faixas, com cinco repetições de quatro plantas cada. Os tratamentos foram: T1: paclobutrazol + água (controle); T2: paclobutrazol + ácidos fúlvicos; T3: paclobutrazol + aminoácidos livres; T4: paclobutrazol + ácidos fúlvicos + aminoácidos livres. A aplicação de ácidos fúlvicos mais paclobutrazol aumentou a eficiência das trocas gasosas, favorecendo a floração e a frutificação, enquanto aminoácido isolado ou em conjunto com os ácidos fúlvicos diminuiu a eficiência no florescimento.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of fulvic acids and free amino acids on paclobutrazol in the flowering of mango ‘Keitt’ cultivated in the semi-arid region. The experiment was performed from 2017 to 2018 simultaneously in two orchards with the same plants and management characteristics, located in Cabrobó, State of Pernambuco, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four treatments and five replications of four trees. The treatments were: T1: paclobutrazol + water (control); T2: paclobutrazol + fulvic acids; T3: paclobutrazol + amino acids; T4: paclobutrazol + fulvic acids + amino acids. Applying fulvic acids plus paclobutrazol increased gas exchange efficiency, favoring flowering and fruiting. In contrast, amino acids alone or with fulvic acids decreased the flowering efficiency.

Resumo Para um melhor gerenciamento da indução floral na mangueira cultivada na região semiárida, é necessário que a imposição do estresse hídrico durante a fase de maturação de ramos seja manejada de forma apropriada. Nesse sentido, prolina associada ao extrato de algas são moléculas com potencial efeito mitigador do estresse, e mesmo que para algumas culturas esta prática tenha sido relatada separadamente, na mangueira, os resultados ainda são desconhecidos. Investigou-se o papel da prolina e do extrato de algas na mitigação dos efeitos ocasionados pela imposição do déficit hídrico durante a fase de maturação de ramos na cultura da mangueira variedade ‘Tommy Atkins’ cultivada na região semiárida tropical. O estudo realizou cinco experimentos individuais consecutivos (cinco aplicações foliares de tratamentos e amostragem), em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 4 x 2, correspondendo a i) concentrações de prolina (Pro): 0,0% (sem prolina), 0,287; 0,575; e 1,150%; e ii) extrato de algas (EA) (presença e ausência), avaliando pigmentos fotossintéticos, carboidratos solúveis, trocas gasosas, parâmetros de eficiência fotoquímica e não fotoquímica, uniformidade de floração e produção. Os carotenoides sofreram efeitos interativos dos fatores avaliados. Como efeitos aditivos, a prolina proporcionou as maiores taxas de troca gasosa e de carboidratos solúveis totais, sendo que, na ausência de extrato de algas, maior concentração interna de CO2 pôde ser observada, contrapondo-se à maior uniformidade de floração. O fornecimento de prolina e extrato de algas de A. nodosum promove diferentes respostas na fisiologia das plantas de mangueira, podendo ser inserido no manejo empregado na etapa de maturação de ramos.

Abstract Water stress should be adequately managed during shoot maturation to improve the floral induction of mango grown in semi-arid regions. In this scenario, proline association with algal extracts has a potential stress-mitigating effect. However, even though this practice has been reported separately for some crops, its effects on mango are still unknown. From this perspective, this study investigated the role of proline and algal extract in mitigation of water deficit effects during shoot maturation of the mango variety ‘Tommy Atkins’ grown in the tropical semi-arid region. The study consisted of five consecutive individual experiments (five foliar application treatments) in a randomized block design and a 4 x 2 factorial corresponding to i) four proline concentrations (Pro): 0.0% (without proline), 0.287, 0.575, and 1.150%, and ii) the presence of algal extract (AE) (presence and absence). The following parameters were evaluated: photosynthetic pigments, soluble carbohydrates, photochemical and non-photochemical efficiency, and flowering and production uniformity. Carotenoids were interactively affected by the factors evaluated. On the other hand, as additive effects, proline provided the highest values of gas exchange and total soluble carbohydrates, with a higher internal CO2 concentration and greater flowering uniformity. The application of proline and the algal extract of A. nodosum promoted different responses in mango physiology and can be used during shoot maturation.

RESUMO Cycnoches haagii é uma Orchidaceae epífita encontrada no Cerrado brasileiro, que possui grande potencial ornamental. Objetivando desenvolver um protocolo completo de propagação seminal de C. haagii, bem como testar a influência da presença de fungos micorrízicos no processo, sementes maduras foram germinadas in vitro na presença ou ausência de dois isolados fúngicos do gênero Tulasnella (FCH e FHC3E), em três meios de cultura (B&G, Knudson e OMA). Avaliou-se a porcentagem de sementes germinadas, e os protocormos dos quatro meios com maiores porcentagens foram transferidos para meios novos, visando à conversão em plântulas. As plântulas foram avaliadas quanto ao comprimento da parte aérea, número de folhas, comprimento da maior raiz, número de raízes e massa fresca total. O meio B&G proporcionou germinação superior a 60 % e maior crescimento das plântulas, contribuindo para 100 % de sobrevivência na fase de aclimatização, independentemente da presença de fungos micorrízicos. No entanto, apenas plântulas oriundas do meio B&G inoculadas com o isolado FCH apresentaram desenvolvimento acelerado quando aclimatizadas, e floresceram ao final do primeiro ano de aclimatização. Assim, a presença do fungo micorrízico FCH no meio B&G, durante a fase de germinação, é adequado para a propagação de C. haagii, pois acelera o desenvolvimento e antecipa a floração ex vitro.

ABSTRACT Cycnoches haagii is an epiphytic Orchidaceae found in the Brazilian Savannah that presents a great ornamental potential. Aiming at developing a complete seminal propagation protocol of C. haagii, as well as testing the influence of the mycorrhizal fungi presence in the process, mature seeds were germinated in vitro in the presence or absence of two fungal isolates, both belonging to the Tulasnella genus (FCH and FHC3E), in three culture media (B&G, Knudson and OMA). The percentage of germinated seeds was evaluated, and the protocorms of the four media with higher percentages were transferred to a new media, aiming at the conversion into plantlets. The seedlings were evaluated for shoot length, number of leaves, length of the largest root, number of roots and total fresh matter. The B&G medium provided a germination rate higher than 60 %, besides a higher seedling growth, contributing to 100 % of survival in the acclimatization stage, independently of the mycorrhizal fungi presence. However, only the seedlings from the B&G medium inoculated with the isolated FHC presented a fast growth when acclimatized, and flowering at the end of the first year of acclimatization. Therefore, the presence of the mycorrhizal fungus FHC on the B&G medium, during the germination phase, is adequate for the propagation of C. haagii, because it accelerates its development and anticipates the ex vitro flowering.

ABSTRACT Symbiosis between orchid seeds and mycorrhizal fungi has been reported to be a determining factor in the success of germination and protocorm development in vitro. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify by molecular analysis the mycorrhizal fungus associated with Cyrtopodium paludicolum, and to evaluate its efficiency in facilitating seed germination and development. Germination experiments were carried out using a fungus isolated from C. paludicolum (CH01) and Epidendrum secundum (M65), which has been successfully used a number of times in symbiotic germination. The experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with treatments of CH01, M65 as well as under asymbiotic conditions. The mycobiont CH01 was successfully isolated from Cyrtopodium paludicolum and identified as Tulasnella sp. Treatments with both fungi reached a higher germination percentage than under asymbiotic conditions, indicating no specificity in the relationship between Cyrtopodium paludicolum and the fungi. The results presented have the potential to advance research into the propagation and conservation of C. paludicolum, a native of the Cerrado biome.

Abstract An efficient protocol for in vitro plant propagation of Cyrtopodium paludicolum has been developed using root tips dissected from well-developed seedlings. Root tips were cultured on Knudson medium supplemented with α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), and/or thidiazuron (TDZ). TDZ did not induce protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) in the NAA absence, indicating phytoregulators synergistic effect. Medium supplemented with 1.34 μM NAA and 2.27 μM TDZ resulted in better response on PBLs, and subsequent shoot differentiation (55.25 shoots per explant), and in better rooting number and root length responses, favoring acclimatization with 90% of survived plants. However, the medium supplemented with only NAA (1.34 μM) resulted in 33.50 shoots per explant. Histological sections confirmed that only one PLB was induced per responsive root tip, and it showed numerous dispersed and extended meristemoids, or division centers that originated new PBLs. Additionally, this protocol could be an excellent model to study molecular aspects of root to shoot conversion.

RESUMO: Um dos grandes problemas de alguns cultivares de arroz de terras altas é o aumento do porte da planta quando submetido a altas doses de fertilizante nitrogenado, atingindo altos índices de acamamento. Uma opção para diminuir a altura das plantas de arroz, e com isso também o acamamento, seria a utilização de reguladores vegetais, entretanto, existem poucas informações sobre o efeito desses reguladores nos processos fisiológicos da planta. Assim, objetivou-se, por meio da análise de crescimento e de trocas gasosas, avaliar a influência da aplicação de etil-trinexapac na cultura do arroz de terras altas. O experimento foi conduzido em casa-de-vegetação usando-se a cultivar BRS Primavera. Foi utilizado o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com oito repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos sem e com aplicação de regulador de crescimento vegetal e dois estádios de desenvolvimento avaliados. Foram estimados os índices fisiológicos e trocas gasosas. O uso de regulador de crescimento etil-trinexapac proporcionou melhor desenvolvimento das plantas de arroz do estádio de florescimento a maturação fisiológica, resultando em valores de RAF, AFE e PMF mais elevados nas plantas tratadas. Paralelamente, proporcionou menor redução na assimilação líquida de CO2 na fase de maturação fisiológica. Assim, a TAL não sofreu alteração em função do regulador de crescimento e a TCR apresentou redução nas plantas tratadas. Estes resultados indicam a ocorrência de autosombreamento na cultura induzida pela concentração do etil-trinexapac, que pode ter sido supra ótima.

ABSTRACT: A major problem affecting some upland rice cultivars is the increase in plant size when subjected to high doses of nitrogen fertilizer, leading to high levels of lodging. A method to reduce the height of upland rice, and therefore lodging, would be to use plant growth regulators. However, little information exists on the effect of these regulators on plant physiological processes. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of trinexapac-ethyl application in upland rice via analysis of growth and gas exchange. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions using the BRS Primavera cultivar. A completely randomized design with eight replications was used. Treatments were carried out with and without the application of the plant growth regulator, and plants were subject to two-stage assessments in which physiological and gas-exchange indices were measured. The use of trinexapac-ethyl improved the growth of rice plants from the flowering to the physiological maturity stage, resulting in higher values of leaf area ratio, specific leaf area, and leaf matter ratio in treated plants. At the same time, it provided smaller reduction in net CO2 assimilation at the physiological maturity stage. Thus, net/apparent assimilation rate did not change after the application of growth regulator, but relative growth rate decreased in these treated plants. These results indicate the occurrence of self-shading in rice plants induced by what might be a supra-optimum trinexapac-ethyl concentration.

RESUMO Bletia catenulata é uma orquídea nativa do Brasil, cujas populações têm sofrido coleta predatória. Objetivando conhecer aspectos da biologia reprodutiva e sua relação com a germinação de sementes, diferentes tipos de polinização foram realizados em flores de plantas cultivadas em estufa agrícola. A polinização cruzada e a autopolinização manuais resultaram em altos percentuais de frutificação (76,7-86,7 %), sendo de apenas 26,7 % na polinização natural, na qual a ausência de polinizadores, por isolamento das flores, resultou na ausência de frutos. A germinação in vitro de sementes de todos os frutos resultantes das diferentes polinizações foi baixa, sendo 8,6 % o maior valor percentual de protocormos obtidos. Portanto,B. catenulata é autocompatível, gerando sementes viáveis, mas dependente de polinizador para reprodução sexuada.

ABSTRACT Bletia catenulata is a native Brazilian orchid whose populations have suffered from predatory collection. Aiming at elucidating aspects of its reproductive biology and the relation with seed germination, pollination tests were carried out in flowers of plants cultivated in a greenhouse. Manual cross and self-pollination resulted in high percentage of fructification (76.7-86.7 %), being only 26.7 % for natural pollination, in which the absence of pollinators, due to flower isolation, resulted in absence of fruits. In vitro seed germination for all fruits from the different pollination processes was low, being 8.6 % the highest percentage for protocorms. Thus, B. catenulata is selfcompatible, resulting in viable seeds, but pollinator-dependent for sexual reproduction.

Visando à obtenção de grande quantidade de mudas para programas de reintrodução, bem como viabilizar sua exploração comercial, sementes de Cyrtopodium saintlegerianum foram incubadas em meio Knudson. Após a germinação, os protocormos foram inoculados em meio Knudson suplementado com 6-benzilaminopurina (BA) e ácido α-naftalenoacético (ANA) para indução de brotações, que foram posteriormente individualizadas e inoculadas em meio Knudson acrescido com ácido giberélico (AG3), para promover alongamento. As plantas resultantes do processo in vitro foram avaliadas e transplantadas para bandejas contendo Plantmax(r) e casca de Acurí triturada. A relação auxina citocinina influencia na propagação in vitro de C. saintlegerianum, induzindo um incremento no número de brotações quando o meio de cultura foi acrescido de 2,0 mg L-1 de BA, na ausência ou presença de 0,5 mg L-1 de ANA. A espécie demonstrou-se promissora na multiplicação massal in vitro. O uso do ácido giberélico favoreceu o alongamento das brotações in vitro, mas contribuiu negativamente na aclimatização das plantas, tornando desnecessária a utilização deste fitorregulador na produção de mudas de C. saintlegerianum.

In order to enable production of large quantities of plantlets for reintroduction programs, as well as economic exploration, Cyrtopodium saintlegerianum seeds were sown on Knudson culture medium. After seed germination, the protocorms were inoculated on Knudson culture medium supplemented with 6-benzyladenine (BA) and α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). The obtained shoots were individually inoculated in Knudson supplemented with gibberellic acid (GA3) in order to promote elongation. Seedlings were evaluated and then transplanted into trays containing commercial substrate Plantmax(r)-HT, or crushed Acuri leaf sheath. Auxin/cytokinin ratio influenced in vitro propagation of C. saintlegerianum, resulting in increased shoot number when 2.0 mg L-1 BA was added to the culture medium in the absence or presence of 0.5 mg L-1 NAA. This species proved to be promising for massal in vitro multiplication. Despite having incremented in vitro shoots elongation, the use of GA3 is unnecessary since it contributed negatively in the acclimatization of plants.

A busca por protocolos de micropropagação de pinhão manso tem resultado em relatos sobre dificuldades na germinação in vitro de sementes recém colhidas. Nesse sentido, levantou-se a hipótese da dormência estar relacionada com a presença do endosperma. Objetivando investigar a influência do endosperma no desenvolvimento in vitro de embriões zigóticos de pinhão manso, extratos puros e filtrados de endosperma de sementes recém colhidas e armazenadas por 50 e 100 dias foram adicionados ao meio MS, no qual foram colocados embriões zigóticos isolados ou contendo endosperma. Foi possível observar que a presença do endosperma junto ao embrião exerce uma inibição à retomada do desenvolvimento do embrião. Ademais, a adição de extratos do endosperma no meio de cultivo reduziu sobremaneira o desenvolvimento dos embriões, evidenciando que além de provável inibição física, o endosperma pode contribuir com inibidores químicos no processo de germinação. Essas observações estão baseadas no perfeito desenvolvimento dos embriões, quando estes foram adicionados isolados ao meio MS, desprovido do extrato.

Researches on physic nut micropropagation have resulted in reports about difficulties in the process of in vitro germination of fresh seeds, and we hypothesized that this dormancy is related to endosperm presence. Aiming to investigate the influence of the endosperm presence on in vitro development of zygotic embryos of physic nut, pure and filtered extracts of the endosperm of newly harvested and stored seeds for up to 100 days were added to MS medium, in which zygotic embryos were added alone or attached to the endosperm. It was observed that the endosperm presence attached to the embryo seems to establish dormancy to the restart of the embryo development. Moreover, addition of endosperm extracts into the MS medium greatly reduced the embryos development, supporting the idea that in addition to probable inhibition physics, the endosperm may contribute to chemical inhibitors in the germination process. All these idea were supported by perfect embryo development when it was added to MS medium without endosperm structure or extract.

A orquídea Aspasia variegata ocorre naturalmente no Cerrado Sul-Matogrossense, e tem sido bastante coletada de seu habitat, devido à beleza de suas flores. Adicionalmente, sua área de ocorrência tem sido bastante reduzida e pouco ou nenhum estudo visando a sua multiplicação tem sido realizado. Objetivando estabelecer protocolo para obtenção de mudas de A. variegata, diferentes composições de meio de cultivo foram testadas para observar aquela que propicia melhores condições para crescimento e desenvolvimento dos protocormos in vitro e ainda a influência desses meios na fase de aclimatização das mudas. Para tal, foram utilizadas cápsulas maduras para obtenção das sementes, as quais foram inoculadas em meio de cultivo básico Knudson por 120 dias até o desenvolvimento de protocormos. Estes foram então transferidos para diferentes formulações dos meios de cultivo MS e Knudson, variando a concentração de sais e de carvão ativado (0; 3,0 e 6,0g L-1). Após 180 dias da inoculação dos protocormos, foram realizadas avaliações referentes ao comprimento da maior raiz e da parte aérea, número de raízes e folhas, e quantificados os teores de clorofila. Em seguida, as mudas foram transferidas para bandejas contendo uma mistura de Plantmax® e Fibra de Coco (1:1) para aclimatização. Melhores resultados para o crescimento in vitro de A. variegata foram obtidos com a utilização do meio de cultura MS, acrescido de 6,0g L-1 de carvão ativado. No entanto, os maiores níveis de clorofila foram obtidos nos tratamentos contendo sais MS desprovidos de carvão ativado, e os menores nos meios contendo sais Knudson providos com carvão ativado. As plantas oriundas dos tratamentos com maiores teores de clorofila total durante a fase in vitro obtiveram as maiores taxas de sobrevivência e melhor desenvolvimento na fase de aclimatização.

Aspasia variegata occurs naturally in the savanna of the Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil and it has been widely collected for its beautiful flowers. Additionally, its habitat has been greatly reduced and little or no investigation of its spread has been performed. Aiming to establish a protocol to obtain seedlings of the orchid A. variegata, different compositions of culture medium were tested to identify which one provided better in vitro growth and development and to assess the influence of these media in seedling acclimatisation. Thus, seeds obtained from mature capsules were inoculated in Knudson culture medium for 120 days until the protocorm stage. They were transferred to different culture media formulations, including MS and Knudson with half or full formulation, and 3.0 and 6.0g L-1 activated charcoal were added to them or not. After 180 days of protocorm inoculation, seedlings were evaluated for length of roots and shoots, number of roots and leaves, and chlorophyll contents. After that, seedlings were transferred to trays containing a mixture of Plantmax® and coconut fibre (1:1) for acclimatisation. Best results for the in vitro growth of A. variegata were obtained with the use of MS medium supplemented with 6.0g L-1 activated charcoal. Higher levels of chlorophyll were obtained, however, in treatments containing MS salts without activated charcoal presence, and lower levels in media containing Knudson salts with the presence of activated charcoal. The seedlings originated by higher chlorophyll levels during in vitro cultivation presented the highest survival rates and better development in the acclimatisation phase.

A obtenção de mudas nativas requer informações sobre a época de coleta das sementes, condições de armazenamento e luminosidade, germinação e tipos de substrato, dentre outras. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar as exigências de luminosidade no crescimento inicial de mudas de pau-ferro [Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. ex. Tul. var. leiostachya Benth (Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae)] submetidas a diferentes níveis de sombreamento, aos 60 dias após o transplante (DAT). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3x5 (três níveis de sombreamento: 0%, 50% e 70%; e cinco épocas de avaliação: 60, 90, 120, 150 e 180 DAT), com quatro repetições de 10 mudas por unidade experimental. Plantas cultivadas sob 70% de sombreamento apresentaram maiores teores de clorofila total (38,79 µg cm-2), razão de área foliar (51,54 g cm-2), taxa de crescimento relativo (0,0322 g g-1 dia-1) e razão de peso foliar (0,2708 g g-1). Os maiores valores para altura (110,34 cm), diâmetro (9,3 mm) e massa seca da raiz (11,13 g), da folha (5,59 g) e da parte aérea (16,05 g), bem como para área foliar (705,25 cm²), foram observados nas plantas cultivadas sob 50% de sombreamento. Não foram observadas diferenças quanto ao crescimento da raiz, peso específico foliar, taxa assimilatória líquida e área foliar específica, em relação aos diferentes níveis de luminosidade testados (médias de 9,3 cm; 0,0082 g cm-2; 0,0006 g cm-2 dia-1; e 186,24 g cm-2, respectivamente). As mudas de pau-ferro apresentaram melhor desempenho de crescimento quando cultivadas sob 50% de sombreamento.

Obtaining native seedlings requires information about seeds harvest time, storage and luminosity conditions, germination and types of substrate, among others. This study aimed at evaluating the luminosity demands for the initial growth of Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. ex. Tul. var. leiostachya Benth (Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae) seedlings submitted to different shading levels, at 60 days after transplant (DAT). The experimental design was completely randomized, in 3x5 factorial scheme (three shading levels: 0%, 50% and 70%; and five evaluation times: 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 DAT), with four replications of 10 seedlings per experimental unit. Plants grown under the shading level of 70% presented the highest contents for total chlorophyll (38.79 µg cm-2), leaf area ratio (51.54 g cm-2), relative growth rate (0.0322 g g-1 day-1) and leaf weight ratio (0.2708 g g-1). The highest values for stem height (110.34 cm) and base diameter (9.3 mm), and root (11.13 g), leaf (5.59 g) and shoot (16.05 g) dry matter, as well as leaf area (705.25 cm²), were observed in the plants cultivated under the shading level of 50%. No differences were observed for root growth, specific leaf weight, net assimilation rate and specific leaf area, concerning the different shading levels tested (averages of 9.3 cm, 0.0082 g cm-2, 0.0006 g cm-2 day-1 and 186.24 g cm-2, respectively). The Caesalpinia ferrea seedlings presented a better growth rate when cultivated under the shading level of 50%.

A propagação in vitro tem se destacado como uma técnica efetiva na produção em larga escala de plantas sadias de morangueiro. Neste trabalho estudamos a hiperhidricidade associado a capacidade de multiplicação in vitro na propagação de duas variedades de morangueiro (Fragaria x ananassa Duch. "Dover" e "Burkley"). Plantas mantidas em meio de cultura MS, suplementadas com 1.0 mg L-1 de BA fora individualizadas e transferidas para o mesmo meio com Ágar (6.5 g L-1) ou Phytagel® (2,5 g L-1) e BA em diferentes concentrações (0; 0,5; 1,0; 2,0 e 3,0 mg L-1). Foram realizadas análises bioquímica e anatômicas, além da caracterização morfológica do material hiper-hídrico. A análise dos dados mostrou: a) o incremento na concentração de citocinina aumentou a freqüência de hiper-hidricidade para ambas as variedades; b) concentrações maiores que 2,0 mg L-1 de BA, com a substituição do Ágar pelo Phytagel® induziu a maior formação de ramos hiper-hídricos; e c) a adição de BA induziu o estresse oxidativo, caracterizado pelo incremento da atividade antioxidante e peroxidação de lipídeos, bem como alterações a nível celular, como má formação dos estômatos e células epidérmicas. Concluindo, o meio de cultura contendo 0,5 mg L-1 de BA solidificado com Ágar promoveu menor porcentagem de hiper-hidricidade associado com maiores taxas de proliferação de gemas em morangueiro.

In vitro propagation has become an effective practice for large-scale production of strawberry plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the hyperhydricity and the multiplication capacity of two strawberry varieties (Fragaria x ananassa Duch. 'Dover' and 'Burkley') propagated in vitro. Plants maintained in MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg L-1 BA were individualized and transferred to the same medium solidified with Agar (6.5 g L-1) or Phytagel® (2.5 g L-1) and BA at different concentrations (0; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0 and 3.0 mg L-1). Biochemical and anatomical analyses were carried out, as well as the analysis of the morphological hyperhydricity characteristics. The analysis of data showed: a) the increase in cytokinin concentration increased hyperhydricity frequency in both varieties; b) at concentrations up to 2.0 mg L-1 BA, the replacement of Agar by Phytagel® induced a higher formation of hyperhydric shoots; and c) the addition of BA induced oxidative stress, which is characterized by increased antioxidant activity and lipid peroxidation, as well as alterations at the cellular level, such as malformation of stomata and epidermal cells. In conclusion, the culture medium containing 0.5 mg L-1 BA solidified with Agar provided lower hyperhydricity percentages in association with higher rates of shoot proliferation in strawberry.

O conhecimento de patógenos associados a sementes é essencial para a elaboração de recomendações de manejo de uma cultura. Dessa forma, objetivou-se determinar os patógenos associados a sementes de pinhão-manso, para possibilitar o desenvolvimento de estratégias de controle dos mesmos. Para o teste de sanidade, utilizou-se o método do papel de filtro (blotter test), modificado com restritor hídrico NaCl - 1,0 MPa, e avaliação após sete dias de incubação, a 25ºC, com fotoperíodo de 12 horas. As sementes de pinhão-manso analisadas apresentaram alta frequência de espécies fúngicas, independentemente da desinfestação superficial das mesmas. Foram observados 19 gêneros de fungos, destacando-se Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum sp., Fusarium spp. e Rhizoctonia solani, os quais são comumente patogênicos e devem ter sua relevância considerada.

The knowledge on seed pathogens is essential for setting management recommendations. Thus, aiming to determine the pathogens associated with Jatropha curcas L., in order to develop strategies to control them, the blotter test, modified with hydric restrictor NaCl - 1.0 MPa, and evaluation after seven days of incubation, at 25°C, with a 12-hours photoperiod, was used. The Jatropha seeds evaluated presented a high level of fungal species, regardless of their surface disinfection. Nineteen different fungi genera were identified, especially Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum sp., Fusarium spp., and Rhizoctonia solani, which are commonly pathogenic and whose relevance must be taken into account.

O conhecimento da estrutura floral e da biologia reprodutiva numa cultura é básico para que o melhorista desenvolva técnicas de castração e polinização adequadas. Objetivando obter dados de biologia reprodutiva de pinhão manso, inflorescências emasculadas, foram observadas sem isolamento (controle positivo) e isoladas com tecido "nylon" tipo voal para posterior realização dos tratamentos de geitonogamia e xenogamia após a antese. Os tratamentos consistiram de controle positivo (flores não isoladas), e a partir das flores isoladas foram obtidos os demais tratamentos: controle negativo (sem polinização); xenogamia (receberam pólen de outra planta); geitonogamia 1 (receberam pólen da mesma inflorescência); geitonogamia 2 (receberam pólen de outra inflorescência da mesma planta). Os resultados indicam que a espécie não apresenta problemas de autoincompatibilidade, sendo os índices de fecundação bastante elevados e indiferentes estatisticamente em todos os tratamentos, com valores acima de 80%, exceto para o controle negativo em que as inflorescências foram isoladas e não polinizadas, resultando em ausência de fecundação e de frutos. Esse último resultado mostra a importância da visitação de insetos para a obtenção de sucesso no processo reprodutivo da espécie. As flores masculinas, doadoras de pólen, abrem no período da manhã, assim como as femininas. Sendo assim, embora haja visitação de insetos durante todo o dia, o processo de polinização ocorre no período matutino, em razão da quase total ausência de pólen no período vespertino.

The knowledge of the floral structure and reproductive biology are basic to a more successful for the development of techniques of castration and pollination in plant species. Aiming to obtain data about reproductive biology of physyc nut, free and enclosed inflorescences were observed without isolation (positive control) and isolation with nylon for posterior treatment of geitonogamy and xenogamy. So, treatments were positive control (free or unbagged inflorescences), and all other treatments obtained from isolated immature inflorescences enclosed within of fine nylon bags: negative control (without pollination), xenogamy (receiving pollen from another plant); geitonogamy 1 (received pollen from the same inflorescence), geitonogamy 2 (received pollen from another inflorescence of the same plant). The results indicate that the species does not present problems of self-incompatibility resulting in high fertilization and statistically indifferent in all treatments, presenting values above 80%, except for negative control in which the inflorescences were isolated and not pollinated resulting in lack of fertilization and fruit development. These results show the importance insects for success in the reproductive process of this species. The male flowers, pollen donors, opened in the morning, just like the female ones. Thus, although there is visitation of insects during all the day, the process of pollination occurs in the morning, and almost total absence of pollen was observed after noon.
