Abstract Objective: To analyze the profile and outcomes of patients who underwent valve heart surgery in Brazil, using information retrieved from the Brazilian Registry of Cardiovascular Surgeries in Adults (BYPASS Registry) database. Methods: This is a multicenter cohort study, evaluating 920 patients submitted to heart valve surgery. Demographics and postoperative clinical outcomes were assessed and compared to estimate mortality risk using the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE). Results: Isolated aortic valve replacement was the most frequently performed surgery (34%), followed by isolated mitral valve replacement (24.9%). Valve repair was performed in 21% of mitral procedures. Minimally invasive access was performed in 1.6% and the most frequent postoperative complications were arrhythmias (22.6%), infections (5.7%), and low-output syndrome (5.1%). Operations covered by the public health system accounted for 80.8% and the hospital mortality rate was 7.3%. Conclusion: The most frequent isolated valve surgery in Brazil is the aortic valve replacement by conventional open access and the rheumatic disease is still the main etiology for valve surgery. The BYPASS Registry has a fundamental role to provide information on the profile of patients with valve heart disease in our country in order to delineate adequate strategies for health promotion and resource allocation for cardiac surgery.

Abstract Introduction: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the most frequently performed heart surgery in Brazil. Recent international guidelines recommend that national societies establish a database on the practice and results of CABG. In anticipation of the recommendation, the BYPASS Registry was introduced in 2015. Objective: To analyze the profile, risk factors and outcomes of patients undergoing CABG in Brazil, as well as to examine the predominant surgical strategy, based on the data included in the BYPASS Registry. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 2292 patients undergoing CABG surgery and cataloged in the BYPASS Registry up to November 2018. Demographic data, clinical presentation, operative variables, and postoperative hospital outcomes were analyzed. Results: Patients referred to CABG in Brazil are predominantly male (71%), with prior myocardial infarction in 41.1% of cases, diabetes in 42.5%, and ejection fraction lower than 40% in 9.7%. The Heart Team indicated surgery in 32.9% of the cases. Most of the patients underwent cardiopulmonary bypass (87%), and cardioplegia was the strategy of myocardial protection chosen in 95.2% of the cases. The left internal thoracic artery was used as a graft in 91% of the cases; the right internal thoracic artery, in 5.6%; and the radial artery in 1.1%. The saphenous vein graft was used in 84.1% of the patients, being the only graft employed in 7.7% of the patients. The median number of coronary vessels treated was 3. Operative mortality was 2.8%, and the incidence of cerebrovascular accident was 1.2%. Conclusion: CABG data in Brazil provided by the BYPASS Registry analysis are representative of our national reality and practice. This database constitutes an important reference for indications and comparisons of therapeutic procedures, as well as to propose subsequent models to improve patient safety and the quality of surgical practice in the country.

Beauveria bassiana is an entomopathogenic fungus that has been well known for its capacity to act as biopesticide on various disease vectors. The analysis of organic extracts of strains CG71 and UNI40 led to identification of cyclodepsipeptides beauvericin, beauvericin A or F, beauvericin E and bassianolide by ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry in tandem mode (UHPLC-HRMS/MS). The larvicidal activity on 3rd instar of Aedes aegypti revealed LC50 0.9887 and 0.4653 ppm in 24 and 48 hours (CG71 methanolic extract), LC50 0.7834 ppm in 48 hours (CG71 ethyl acetate), LC50 0.7834 and 1.8149 ppm (UNI 40 for ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts, respectively) in 48 hours. These findings highlight the potential of B. bassiana metabolites for controlling the vector of Dengue and Zika diseases.

O pinhão-manso é uma espécie arbustiva que está se destacando pelo interesse para produção de biocombustível, porém, os estudos sobre controle de qualidade das sementes estão se iniciando. Neste trabalho objetivou-se estudar o efeito da temperatura e do tempo de contagem na germinação de sementes de pinhão-manso, conduzido em papel toalha bem como avaliar a qualidade sanitária das sementes, desinfestadas ou não com hipoclorito de sódio, a 2%. O estudo foi conduzido, com sementes de pinhão-manso extraídas de frutos maduros, coletados na planta. O teste de germinação foi conduzido nas temperaturas de 25 ºC e alternadas de 20-30 ºC, com contagens aos 6, 9 e 12 dias. O teste de sanidade foi conduzido a 20 ºC com fotoperíodo de 12 h por 7 dias. Foi utilizado o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições e empregado o teste F na análise de variância dos dados de germinação e do índice de velocidade de germinação. As médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. O potencial máximo de germinação das sementes de pinhão-manso foi obtido na temperatura de 25 ºC, com contagens aos seis, nove e 12 dias, entretanto não apresentou diferença significativa com as temperaturas de 20-30 ºC, nas contagens aos 9 e 12 dias. As sementes de pinhão-manso analisadas apresentaram alta frequência de espécies fúngicas, independente da desinfestação superficial. A incidência de fungos em ordem decrescente foi dos gêneros: Alternaria, Macrophomina, Cladosporium, Colletotrichum, Fusarium, Pestalotiopsis, Phoma, Helminthosporium, Epicocum e Nigrospora a maioria destes fungos apresenta potencial patogênico.

Jatropha curcas is a shrubby species, interesting for biofuel production, however studies of these seeds quality control are starting. The work aimed to study effects of temperature and counting time on germination of J. curcas, in paper towel and to check the health quality of seeds, disinfected or not with sodium hypochlorite 2%. The tests carried out with a lot of J. curcas seeds extracted four yellow fruits, collected in the plant. The seed germination was tested at temperature of 25 °C and in the alternating temperature of 20 to 30 ºC, with couting times at six, nine and 12 days after sowing. We used a randomized experimental design with four replications and used the F test for the analysis of variance of germination and index of germination speed. Means were compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. The maximum germination potential of the seeds of J. curcas was got at 25 °C, with counts at 6, 9 and 12 days, however no had significant difference in temperature of 20-30 °C with score at 9 and 12 days. The seeds of Jatropha curcas analyzed showed high frequency of fungal species independent of surface disinfection. The incidence of fungi, in decreased sequence was to the genera: Alternaria, Macrophomina, Cladosporium, Colletotrichum, Fusarium, Pestalotiopsis, Phoma, Helminthosporium, Epicocum and Nigrospora most of these fungi have pathogenic potential.

The in-medium influence on pi0 photoproduction from spin zero nuclei is carefully studied in the GeV range using a straightforward Monte Carlo analysis. The calculation takes into account the relativistic nuclear recoil for coherent mechanisms (electromagnetic and nuclear amplitudes) plus a time dependent multi-collisional intranuclear cascade approach (MCMC) to describe the transport properties of mesons produced in the surroundings of the nucleon. A detailed analysis of the meson energy spectra for the photoproduction on 12C at 5.5 GeV indicates that both the Coulomb and nuclear coherent events are associated with a small energy transfer to the nucleus ($\lesssim$ 5 MeV), while the contribution of the nuclear incoherent mechanism is vanishing small within this kinematical range. The angular distributions are dominated by the Primakoff peak at extreme forward angles, with the nuclear incoherent process being the most important contribution above $\theta_{\pi^{0}}\gtrsim2^{0}$. Such consistent Monte Carlo approach provides a suitable method to clean up nuclear backgrounds in some recent high precision experiments, such as the PrimEx experiment at the Jefferson Laboratory Facility.

Este trabalho foi realizado na Fazenda Experimental Lageado, pertencente à Universidade Estadual Paulista-UNESP, Campus de Botucatu, SP, em um Nitossolo distrófico, na safra de 1997/98. Avaliaram-se os efeitos da aplicação de termofosfato magnesiano; termofosfato + calcário e termofosfato + gesso + vinhaça, nas propriedades químicas do solo e na produtividade do milho (Zea mays L.) cultivar XL-345 da Braskalb, cultivado nos sistemas plantio direto e preparo convencional. Foi utilizada a Crotalaria juncea como planta de cobertura sobre a qual foram estabelecidos os sistemas de preparo. As principais alterações na fertilidade do solo ocorreram devido à adubação corretiva com o termofosfato magnesiano. As produtividades da cultura do milho apresentaram diferenças significativas em relação aos sistemas de cultivo e estiveram associadas ao menor teor de N encontrado nas folhas do milho cultivado no sistema de plantio direto.

A field experiment was carried out in the Lageado Experimental Farm belonging to the São Paulo State University - UNESP, Campus of Botucatu, SP, in a distrophic Nitosoil in 1997/98. The objective was to compare the effects of magnesium termophosphate; termophosphate + lime; termophosphate + phosphogypsum + sugarcane vinnace application on the chemical characteristics of the soil and on the corn (Zea mays L.) yield cultivated in no-tillage and conventional tillage systems. The Crotalaria juncea was cultivated as mulch-producing to make possible the establishment of the tillage systems. The mean modifications in the soil fertility were due to aplication of the magnesium termophosphate. The differences between the two tillage systems, related to crop productivity, were associated to the smaller N content in the corn leaf in the no-tillage system.

A síndrome do canal de Guyon, um encarceramento do nervo ulnar a nível do punho, é bem conhecida. Ela é causada por neurite ocupacional traumática, doenças e traumas do arco músculo-tendíneo e doença de artéria ulnar. Descrevemos dois casos de síndrome do canal de Guyon e discutimos os aspectos anatômicos e etiológicos, suas características clínicas, classificação anatômica e critérios de diagnóstico, bem como fazemos uma análise crítica do tratamento imposto. Enfatizamos também que, para obter um resultado cirúrgico satisfatório, é importante conhecer bem tanto as técnicas cirúrgicas como sua anatomia.

Guyon's canal syndrome, an ulnar nerve entrapment at the wrist, is a well-recognized entity. The most common causes that involve the ulnar nerve at the wrist are compression from a ganglion, occupational traumatic neuritis, a musculotendinous arch and disease of the ulnar artery. We describe two cases of Guyon's canal syndrome and discuss the anatomy, aetiology, clinical features, anatomical classification, diagnostic criteria and treatment. It is emphasized that the knowledge of both the surgical technique and anatomy is very important for a satisfactory surgical result.

O experimento foi desenvolvido na Fazenda Experimental São Manuel da Universidade Estadual Paulista, Campus de Botucatu, em Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo fase arenosa, no ano de 1996, com o objetivo de estudar o efeito da adubação potássica e da época de colheita na produtividade de canola (Brassica napus L. var. oleifera Metzg.). O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições. As parcelas constituíram-se de duas doses de potássio (0 e 40 kg ha-1 de K), e as subparcelas, de sete épocas de colheita, realizadas em intervalos semanais, no período de 112 a 154 dias após a semeadura. A adubação potássica não favoreceu o crescimento das plantas e a produtividade de sementes de canola, porém acarretou maior retenção das síliquas nas colheitas realizadas aos 147 e 154 dias da semeadura. A época de colheita não resultou em benefício consistente ao rendimento de sementes. O máximo de matéria seca da parte aérea das plantas foi atingido aos 112 dias da semeadura, e o das sementes, aos 126 dias, na presença da adubação potássica.

A field experiment was carried out to study the effects of potassium fertilization and time of harvesting on canola seed yield. The soil was a Red-Yellow Latosol (Hapludox), and the experimental design was a subplot replicated four times in completely randomized blocks. Potassium levels (0 and 40 kg ha-1 of K) were applied in the plots, and the subplots consisted of 7 weekly harvests, starting 112 days after planting. Yield and yield components were evaluated at each harvest. Although no positive effect of potassium fertilization on seed yield and growth parameters was evident, this fertilization caused higher retention of pods from the harvest at 147 and 154 days after planting. Time of harvesting did not affect seed yield. The maximum level of dry matter of the above ground part of the plants was obtained from the harvest at 112 days, and, of seeds, at 126 days, at high potassium level.

Avaliaram-se os efeitos das relações (Ca+Mg)/K do solo sobre o desenvolvimento, absorção de nutrientes e produção de bulbos na cultura do alho cv. "Roxo Pérola de Caçador" conduzindo experimento no período de maio a outubro de 1990 em vasos de cimento amianto contendo 50 kg de terra, em casa de vegetação telada. Os tratamentos consistiram de aplicações de doses de potássio visando atingir relações (Ca+Mg)/K no complexo de troca do solo próximas a 170; 50; 35; 20; 12,5; 7,5; 5,0; 3,5 e 2,0. Verificaram-se aumentos na concentração de K, Ca e Mg na solução do solo proporcionais à elevação do teor de K trocável. As concentrações foliares de K e Mn diminuiram proporcionalmente às relações (Ca+Mg)/K do solo, ocorrendo o inverso com as concentrações de Ca e Mg. A absorção dos demais nutrientes não foi influenciada pelos tratamentos. A relação (Ca+Mg)/K influenciou a produção de bulbos e a altura das plantas durante todo o ciclo, sendo que os menores valores desta relação, caracterizados por excesso de K, inibiram mais o desenvolvimento e a produção de bulbos. A porcentagem de K no complexo de troca, seguida da relação K/(Ca+Mg)1/2 e do K trocável do solo foram os índices que melhor correlacionaram com a produção de bulbos.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of soil (Ca+Mg)/K ratio on nutrient uptake, development and bulb yield of vernalized garlic (Allium sativum L.) grown in 50 liter pots, under greenhouse conditions. Rates of potassium were applied to an allic dark red latosol (Oxisol) in order to obtain soil (Ca+Mg)/K ratios of approximately to 170; 50; 35; 20; 12.5; 7.5; 3.5 and 2.0. The increase of potassium rates influenced the soil solution, increasing directly the K, Ca and Mg concentrations. The contents of K and Mn in the leaves decreased with the increment of the soil (Ca+Mg)/K ratio, while the opposite occurred with the Ca and Mg content. Other nutrients uptake were not influenced by the treatments. The soil (Ca+Mg)/K ratio influenced bulb yield and plant height at the lowest ratios, and potassium excess decreased plant yield and weight. The best correlation with bulb yield was observed between potassium saturation (%K), followed by K/(Ca+Mg)1/2 ratio and exchangeable potassium in the soil.

A ocorrência de sementes duras em quiabeiro (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) foi estudada em função da colheita única dos frutos na senescência das plantas ou da colheita periódica dos frutos no estádio de maturação morfológica. As cultivares utilizadas foram "Amarelinho", "Santa Cruz-47" e "Campinas-2 IAC 4076" e os frutos foram separados em aqueles provenientes da haste principal e os oriundos dos ramos laterais. A porcentagem de sementes duras foi avaliada por meio do teste padrão de germinação e os dados obtidos permitiram verificar que o método de colheita única aumentou a ocorrência de sementes duras e, pelo fato de "Amarelinho" não apresentar essa característica, esse método pode ser utilizado para a mesma, com redução nos custos de produção de sementes sem afetar sua qualidade.

The occurrency of hard seeds was studied in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) as a function of single fruit harvesting after plant senescence or periodical fruit harvesting in the morphological ripening stage. The cultivars "Amarelinho", "Santa Cruz-47" and "Campinas IAC 4076" were utilized, considering fruits beared on the main stem and those beread on lateral branches. The percentage of hard seeds was evaluated by the standard germination test and it was observed that single fruit harvest after plant senescence increased the occurrence of hard seeds independently of the utilized harvesting method. The possibility of taking advantage of single fruit harvesting during plant senescence is suggested, which will reduce seed production costs without interfering on seed quality.

Foi conduzido um experimento em casa de vegetação, onde foram estudados os efeitos de N sobre o crescimento e absorção de nutrientes pelo sorgo granífero. As plantas foram cultivadas em solução nutritiva completa ou com nitrogênio diluída a 1/2, 1/5 e 1/10 da concentração usual, e foram colhidas aos 110 dias da emergência, quando foram separadas em raiz, colmo, folhas, raquis e grãos. O material foi secado, moido e foram feitas análises de nitrogênio, fósforo e potássio. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que os níveis de nitrogênio utilizados tiveram efeitos nas produções de matéria seca das plantas, assim como nas quantidades de nitrogênio, fósforo e potássio absorvidas. As cultivares apresertaram reações diferentes aos níveis de nitrogênio.

An experiment in nutrient solution was carried out to study the effects of increasing levels of N on growth, yield and mineral composition of 5 cultivars of grain sorghum namely: TE Y 101, C 101, C 102, P 8417, and E 57. Four levels of N were used, all of them being a fraction of the concentration given in the solution of HOAGLAND & ARNON (1950) nº 1. Differential responses in dry matter, yield and N, P and K contents were observed and discussed.
