Abstract Background The current gold standard of coronary drug-eluting stents (DES) consists of metal alloys with thinner struts and bioresorbable polymers. Objectives Our aim was to compare an ultrathin strut, sirolimus-eluting stent (Inspiron®) with other third-generation DES platforms in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) submitted to primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods We analyzed data from a STEMI multicenter registry from reference centers in the South Region of Brazil. All patients were submitted to primary PCI, either with Inspiron® or other second- or third-generation DES. Propensity score matching (PSM) was computed to generate similar groups (Inspiron® versus other stents) in relation to clinical and procedural characteristics. All hypothesis tests had a two-sided significance level of 0.05. Results From January 2017 to January 2021, 1711 patients underwent primary PCI, and 1417 patients met our entry criteria (709 patients in the Inspiron® group and 708 patients in the other second- or third-generation DES group). After PSM, the study sample was comprised of 706 patients (353 patients in the Inspiron® group and 353 patients in the other the other second- or third-generation DES group). The rates of target vessel revascularization (OR 0.52, CI 0.21 – 1.34, p = 0.173), stent thrombosis (OR 1.00, CI 0.29 – 3.48, p = 1.000), mortality (HR 0.724, CI 0.41 – 1.27, p = 0.257), and major cardiovascular outcomes (OR 1.170, CI 0.77 – 1.77, p = 0.526) were similar between groups after a median follow-up of 17 months. Conclusion Our findings show that Inspiron® was effective and safe when compared to other second- or third-generation DES in a contemporary cohort of real-world STEMI patients submitted to primary PCI.

Abstract Jackfruit is an exotic fruit present in the Northeast region of Brazil, presenting a great economic potential for the region because of the internal and external commercialization of its fruit. Its seed is rich in carbohydrates, protein, minerals and vitamins, and is an alternative source of starch and for food. Germination is an easily accessible, inexpensive technology for the production of sprouts, improving the bioavailability of nutrients in the seed for consumption, such as proteins and bioactive compounds. The objective of this work was to evaluate the chemical, physical and physicochemical parameters of fresh and germinated jackfruit seeds. The germination of jackfruit seeds increased the contents of water, proteins, ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds and total sugars, in addition to reducing the content of starch, lipids, tannins and the parameters of color, luminosity, red (+ a*) and yellow (+b*) intensities. In relation to the physical properties of the seed, there was an increase in the real specific mass and in the unit mass. For apparent specific mass there was a reduction. Seed germination provided an increase in the levels of magnesium, iron and sodium, consequently reducing potassium, phosphorus, calcium, zinc, copper and manganese.

Abstract Brazil is the world´s largest producer, consumer and exporter of acerola. Due to its high content of vitamin C, acerola has great potential for industrialization and has triggered the interest of producers and the consumer market. However, in areas with acerola tree orchards there has been a reduction in fruit yield and quality, due to the occurrence of root-knot nematodes (RKN) Meloidogyne spp. The objective of the present study was to identify RKN species associated with acerola tree orchards in Sub-middle of São Francisco River Valley, Brazil. For this, 75 samples, containing soil and acerola tree roots, were collected in areas of the irrigated perimeters of Petrolina, Pernambuco state, and Juazeiro and Sobradinho, Bahia state, Brazil. Based on the analysis of the esterase phenotypes, a total of 75 populations were identified, of which three were mixtures: 72 presented the typical phenotype of M. enterolobii (En4), two of M. incognita (I1), two of M. arenaria (A2), one of M. javanica (J3) and one with an atypical phenotype (P1). The main acerola tree cultivars planted in the region were hosts of RKN species, with emphasis on M. enterolobii.

Abstract Quantifying the intensity of the incoming solar radiation at the earth's surface is important, to the natural, physical, chemical and / or biological processes. However, there are some difficulties in measuring this variable, due to the high cost of equipment for this purpose. Thus, the objective of this work was to develop a low cost prototype to measure global solar radiation. A cast aluminum frame, covered with a flat acrylic diffuser and a semi-spherical glass dome, to surround the photoresist sensor and minimize thermal and weather effects on its measurements, was made. The prototype was connected to the arduino, used as datalogger. A commercial KIPP & ZONEN pyranometer model CM5 was used for calibration. Measurement accuracy was determined by determination coefficients ( R 2 = 0.957 ), coefficients of efficiency ( ε = 0.95 ), Willmott agreement index ( d = 0.99 ), and mean absolute error ( M A E = 51.22 W m − 2 ). There is a good approximation of the global solar radiation values measured by the prototype for CM5. Therefore, the construction of this prototype is useful to facilitate and diffuse daily measurements of global solar radiation and, overall, may contribute to the contextualization of the concepts studied in physics in the highschool and colege education.

Solid state reaction of serpentinite Mg3Si2O5(OH)4 with NaOH was investigated to produce new NaMgSi oxide phases with basic properties for application in catalysis. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) showed that NaOH impregnated on serpentinite, specially 20% sodium and treated at 700 ºC (20Na700), led to the formation of a new crystalline phase Na2Mg2Si2O7. This solid state reaction is discussed in terms of a first step involving Na+ diffusion and intercalation in the interlayer space of the serpentinite structure followed by a dihydroxylation and formation of the NaMgSi oxides. Temperature programmed reaction and desorption experiments with 20Na700 combined with XRD suggested a strong basicity with high CO2 uptake likely due to diffusion and interaction with the basic sites in the material structure. These materials were tested as catalysts for the transesterification of soybean oil with methanol. The obtained results are discussed in terms of a basic site Si-O-Na+ present in the in the Na2Mg2Si2O7 structure.

Microscopic techniques were combined to study the influence of corrosion rate on the morphologic behavior of AISI 1020 steel specimens submitted to thermal degradation of a typical acid crude oil (total acid number (TAN) = 2.1390 mg KOH g-1 and total sulfur (S) = 0.7778 wt.%). The techniques used were light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM) as well as Raman spectroscopy. Assays were performed in six different degradation time (t = 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72 h) at 320 ºC. After the exposure of the specimens to petroleum, a reduction above 37% in the TAN after t = 72 h was observed, with a maximum corrosion rate during the first periods of degradation (t = 6 and 12 h). Correlating the TAN and corrosion rate data with the microscopic data, the images of LM, AFM, and SEM/EDX showed that after 6 h of exposure to petroleum, a passivation film was formed on the surface of the steel. This film consisted of two layers, an external one, formed of FeS, and an internal one, composed of iron oxides and oxyhydroxides. However, after 48 h of thermal degradation, this morphology was altered to a single layer of FeS coating the steel surface.

Twenty species of marine invertebrates from the Brazilian coast were screened for hemagglutinating/hemolytic activity. In at least twelve tested species, hemagglutinating activity was different for different blood types, suggesting the presence of lectins. Extracts from four species showed hemolytic activity. Two new lectins were purified from the marine sponge Cliona varians (CvL-2) and sea cucumber Holothuria grisea (HGL). CvL-2 was able to agglutinate rabbit erythrocytes and was inhibited by galactosides. The hemagglutinating activity was optimal in pH neutral and temperatures below 70 °C. CvL-2 is a trimeric protein with subunits of 175 kDa. On the other hand, HGL showed both hemagglutinating and hemolytic activity in human and rabbit erythrocytes, but hemolysis could be inhibited by osmotic protection, and agglutination was inhibited by mucin. HGL was stable in pH values ranging from 4 to 10 and temperatures up to 90 °C. In electrophoresis and gel filtration, HGL was a monomeric protein with 15 kDa. CvL-2 and HGL showed different levels of toxicity to Artemia naplii. CvL-2 showed LC50 of 850.1 μg/mL, whereas HGL showed LC50 of 9.5 µg/mL.

AIM: To assess dimensional change and antimicrobial activity of disinfectants substances incorporated during the dental stone manipulation. MATERIAL AND METHOD: In vivo - microorganisms were collected in alginate molds of 30 volunteers inoculated on BHI agar and incubated at 37 °C for 24 hours. The molds were cast with type IV gypsum, manipulated with saline (G1), 1% sodium hypochlorite (G2) and 4% chlorhexidine (G3), replacing the water. After setting of plaster with 1 hour two collections on models were made. After 24 hours, the readings were performed. The Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon tests with confidence interval of 99% and 95% respectively were used. In vitro - Müeller Hinton agar petri dishes were inoculated with S. mutans (ATCC25175), S. sanguis (ATCC10556) and E. faecalis (ATCC29212), over which were placed steel rings filled with the same substances of the in vivo study. After deposition of gypsum and incubation, halos were measured with a digital caliper and data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test with confidence interval of 95%. Dimensional Change - With a metallic matrix and a perfectly adapted tray, the insertion axis and force used for moulding and obtain 30 specimens in type IV gypsum were standardized, following the same distribution of the study groups in vivo. The specimens were measured by Image Pro Plus software and data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test with confidence interval of 95%. RESULT: Data from the in vivo study demonstrated a significant difference between the mold and each model (p<0.001). In the Wilcoxon test there was no significant difference between groups of models. At the in vitro test, G2 showed greater inhibition zones in all micro-organisms tested compared to G3, but with respect to dimensional changes, there was a significant difference between solutions and metallic standard, where G3 caused less change than G2. CONCLUSION: Chlorhexidine 4% showed to be the most suitable disinfectant.

Abstract An updated synthesis of cyanobacteria and algae information is presented for Brazil aiming to refine the data gathered to date and evaluate the progress of the biodiversity knowledge about these organisms in the country since the publication of the Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. The results of 2015 showed an increase of 1,250 species (35.7%) when compared to 2010, reaching a total of 4,747 species. The most diverse classes in species number were the Bacillariophyceae, Conjugatophyceae, Florideophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae had the highest increase in species number in the five-year interval. The Southeast and South regions were the most diverse, however, the Northeast, with the states of Piauí and Sergipe, and the Central-west region, with Mato Grosso, Goiás and Distrito Federal, also stood out in the national algal biodiversity scenario. Despite the shortage of taxonomists and limited infrastructure, the results showed a significant improvement in the knowledge regarding the diversity of cyanobacteria and algae in the country during the study period, starting to even out regional geographical differences caused by subsampling.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Te present study was carried to verify the resistance profile of different Salmonella spp. serotypes isolated from a poultry broiler house against antimicrobial agents. Tree-hundred and forty two drag swabs from poultry farms in western Paraná were processed in the period from January 2010 to January 2011, and 39 Salmonella spp. Strains were isolated. The serovars were mostly: S. Heidelberg, S. Mbandaka, S. Newport, S. Schwarzengrund, S. Enteritidis, S. Livingstone, S. Orion, S. Give and S. Infantis. The determination of the resistance profile to the 19 identified Salmonella serotypes was evaluated against 12 antimicrobial commercials. The results indicate that 51% of Salmonella serotypes showed resistance to on or more antimicrobials, with 12 different resistance patterns. The highest percentage of resistance was related to tetracycline (30,8%) and the lowest one to gentamicin and chloramphenicol (2,6%). The resistance levels indicate that antimicrobials should be used on poultry farms more carefuly, thus seeking to minimize the spread of resistant strains.

In this article it was evaluated the quality of water in the Cascavel river, in the city of Cascavel - Paraná using microbiological indicators, physical and chemical pollution and susceptibility / resistance in strains of Escherichia coli isolated antimicrobial trade. The water sampling was conducted between 2010-July and 2011-June at three points: a) near the source, b) urban area, c) rural area. The samples were analyzed for physical, chemical and microbiological variables: temperature, pH, color, turbidity, electrical conductivity, total nitrogen and total phosphorus, total coliforms (CT), fecal coliform (CTe) and Escherichia coli. Tests were also performed to nine antimicrobial commercial resistances. The variables studied indicated that the Cascavel river water was presented at disagreement with the resolution 357/2005 CONAMA (class I), ranking in the index as regular water quality. The physical, chemical and rainfall did not affect the growth of CT and CTe, with higher counts of E. coli in the urban area. The greatest resistance profiles of the strains of E. coli isolated from Cascavel river water was found in section 2, the urban area as a probable consequence of human influence on water quality.

This study aimed to compare the genetic diversity of populations of Solanum lycocarpum A.St.-Hil between natural and human disturbed environments, with the assumption that protected areas have greater genetic diversity than disturbed areas. For this study, two populations were sampled in Goiás State, Brazil. One was located in a conservation unit, Serra de Caldas Novas State Park, in the Caldas Novas municipality. The other was located in a pasture area in the municipality of Morrinhos. The two populations are 41 km apart. We sampled 60 individuals from each population, which were genotyped with five microsatellite loci (SSR). The highest number of alleles was recorded in the population of the conservation unit, where we found 11 exclusive and five rare alleles. In the disturbed area, we recorded only three exclusive alleles and one rare allele. Although we did not observe significant inbreeding in these populations, genetic divergence between them was high (G ST (Hedrick)=0.147 =0.147) for a species with long distance seed dispersal. The results corroborate the hypothesis that the population in the less disturbed area harbors greater allelic diversity. They also confirm the effectiveness of using protected areas to preserve the genetic diversity of the species.

BACKGROUND: There are few contemporary studies assessing direct stenting in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (AMI). METHOD: Prospective cohort study in consecutive patients with AMI seen at a reference cardiology center from December 2009 to January 2010. Clinical and laboratory data, angiographic characteristics and hospital outcomes were evaluated. Patients with over 12 hours of symptom onset, with less than 18 years of age and those who denied participating in the study were excluded. Patients undergoing direct stenting were compared to those treated with stent with balloon pre-dilatation. Data were entered in a dedicated database and analyzed by SPSS 17.0. RESULTS: During the study period, 98 patients were submitted to primary angioplasty, of which 33 (34.7%) received direct stenting and 65 (65.3%) underwent stent with balloon pre-dilatation. Mean age was 58.6 ± 10.6 years and 63% were men. Direct stenting was less frequent in calcified lesions (9% vs. 30%; P = 0.02) and more frequent in those with TIMI 3 before the procedure (41% vs. 18%; P = 0.06) and thrombus aspiration was more frequently used in these cases (41% vs. 14%; P = 0.003). There was no statistically significant difference for the clinical outcome in both groups of patients. CONCLUSION: Direct stenting was more frequently used in patients with normal flow prior the procedure and in combination with thrombus aspiration and less used in calcified lesions. It was not associated to significant differences in clinical outcome rates.
