Resumo Antecedentes Programas informatizados de treinamento cognitivo podem ter beneficiado a autoavaliação da memória, a qualidade de vida e o humor entre os idosos durante a pandemia de doença do coronavírus 2019 (coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19, em inglês). Objetivo Determinar os impactos subjetivos do treinamento cognitivo computadorizado no humor, na frequência de esquecimento, nas queixas de memória, e na qualidade de vida em idosos utilizando uma plataforma online. Métodos Ao todo, 66 idosos participantes do programa USP 60 +, oferecido à terceira idade pela Universidade de São Paulo, e inscritos voluntariamente no estudo, foram selecionados e randomizados em uma razão de 1:1 em 2 grupos: grupo treinamento (n = 33) e grupo controle (n = 33). Após assinarem o termo de consentimento livre e esclarecido, os participantes responderam a um protocolo que incluía um questionário sociodemográfico, o Questionário de Queixas de Memória (Memory Complaints Questionnaire, MAC-Q), A Escala de Frequência de Esquecimento de McNair e Kahn, a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica (Geriatric Depression Scale, GDS-15), o Inventário de Ansiedade Geriátrica (Geriatric Anxiety Inventory, GAI), e –o questionário de Controle, Autonomia, Autorrealização e Prazer (Control, Autonomy, Self-Realization, and Pleasure, CASP-19). A plataforma de jogos cognitivos de treinamento visou estimular diversos aspectos cognitivos, incluindo memória, atenção, linguagem, funções executivas (raciocínio, raciocínio lógico) e habilidades visuais e espaciais. Resultados Na comparação pré e pós-teste, os participantes do grupo de treinamento apresentaram redução nas pontuações do MAC-Q, da escala McNair e Kahn e do GAI. Diferenças significativas entre os grupos quanto às pontuações totais da escala MAC-Q no pós-teste também foram evidenciadas pela regressão logística. Conclusão A participação em uma intervenção cognitiva computadorizada promoveu reduções nas queixas de memória, frequência de esquecimento e sintomas de ansiedade, além de melhorar a qualidade de vida autorrelatada.

Abstract Background Computerized cognitive training programs may have benefited the self-assessment of memory, quality of life, and mood among older adults during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Objective To determine the subjective impacts of computerized cognitive training on mood, frequency of forgetfulness, memory complaints, and quality of life in the elderly using an online platform. Methods In total, 66 elderly participants of USP 60 +, a program for the elderly offered by Universidade de São Paulo, who voluntarily enrolled in the study were selected and randomized with an allocation ratio of 1:1 into 2 groups: the training group (n = 33) and the control group (n = 33). After signing the free and informed consent form, they answered a protocol which included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Memory Complaints Questionnaire (MAC-Q), the McNair and Kahn’s Frequency of Forgetfulness Scale, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI), and the Control, Autonomy, Self-Realization, and Pleasure (CASP-19) questionnaire. The training cognitive game platform aimed to stimulate various cognitive aspects, including memory, attention, language, executive functions (reasoning, logical thinking), and visual and spatial skills. Results The participants of the training group showed a reduction in the MAC-Q, MacNair and Kahn, and GAI scores in the pre- and posttest comparison. Significant differences were identified between the groups regarding the total scores of the MAC-Q in the post-test, which was also evidenced by the logistic regression. Conclusion Participation in a computerized cognitive intervention promoted reductions in memory complaints, frequency of forgetfulness, and anxiety symptoms, in addition to improving self-reported quality of life.

Resumo Objetivou-se estimar a prevalência de hipertensão arterial (HA) e os fatores de risco associados em mulheres presas. Utilizou-se dados do Inquérito Nacional de Saúde na População Penitenciária Feminina e em Servidoras Prisionais, investigando-se características sociodemográficas, fatores das prisões, comportamentos e condições de saúde. As informações foram coletadas por meio de questionário autoaplicado, sendo a magnitude da associação estimada por odds ratio e intervalo de confiança de 95%. Das 1.327 participantes, 24,4% eram hipertensas, a maioria tinha 31 anos ou mais (54,6%), 51,5% autorreferiram etnia/cor parda. Após mutual ajustamento pelos fatores de risco associados na análise bivariada, observou-se relação direta e com gradiente entre idade e HA, em que idade igual/maior a 41 anos foi associada independentemente com uma chance sete vezes maior de ter HA, se comparado a quem tem menos de 25 anos. Aquelas que autorreferiram etnia/cor negra apresentaram colesterol alto e estavam obesas, também foram associadas de forma independente com maior prevalência de HA. O maior número de pessoas com que a presa divide cela esteve associado à maior prevalência de há, sem uma relação dose-resposta. Conclui-se que idade, etnia/cor, obesidade, inatividade física e estresse são fatores de risco para HA em mulheres presas.

ABSTRACT Microbial contamination of the wort during the fermentation process causes significant losses in ethanol production worldwide and creates a dependence of the industry on chemicals and antibiotics to control contamination. Therefore, this study used electron beam (e-beam) to disinfect wort from sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) molasses and investigate the bioethanol fermentation. Four treatments (T0 – T3) were carried out using ionizing doses of radiation through the electron accelerator: 0 (control), 10, 20, and 40 kGy. Total mesophiles, total bacteria, sucrose, glucose, fructose, phenolics, flavonoids, hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), and Furfural were measured. An alcoholic fermentation assay was performed after the irradiation process. The irradiated treatments showed no inversion of sugars and formation of the inhibitory by-products flavonoids, furfural and 5-HMF, except for the phenolic compounds. The lower dose tested (10 kGy) reduced more than 99.9 % of the total mesophiles and more than 99.99 % of the total bacteria in the substrate. In the fermentation, the irradiated worts presented similar (p > 0.05) yields (92, 93, and 94 %) and ethanol productivity levels (0.89, 0.88, and 0.87 g L–1 h–1, for T1, T2, and T3 respectively). However, all treatments presented higher yields and productivity (p < 0.05) when compared to the control (88 % and 0.85 g L–1 h–1), highlighting the possible use of e-beam in wort fermentation at a lower dose (10 kGy). This allows reduction in losses caused by microbial contamination, besides increasing fermentation yield and productivity with lower energy consumption.

Abstract Background Cognitive impairment, anxiety, and depression are present in patients with heart failure (HF), but their mutual correlation in hospitalized patients is not well established. Objectives The aims of this study were to identify the presence of cognitive impairment and the most affected domain, to investigate possible associations of cognitive impairment with depression and/or anxiety, and to observe whether they correlated with occurrence of readmission within 30 days following hospital discharge. Methods This is a prospective observational study including patients with HF from a private hospital. Psychological distress and cognition were evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and by the Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE), respectively. Clinical data were obtained from the medical record at the time of inclusion, and outpatient follow-up was performed 30 days after discharge via telephone calls. Results This study included 71 patients (83% men, 75 ± 11 years). Cognitive impairment was present in 53.5% of the patients, and recall memory was the most altered cognitive domain. The proportion of possible/probable anxiety and depression was 21.1% and 34.2% in patients with cognitive impairment, respectively. However, only depression demonstrated association with cognitive impairment (p = 0.018). Cognitive impairment, anxiety, and depression showed no relationship with the occurrence of readmission within 30 days. Conclusions Cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms are prevalent and associated, and recall memory was the most altered cognitive domain in patients hospitalized with HF. However, there was no relationship between these factors and readmission within 30 days.

ABSTRACT. Brazilian consumers are increasingly seeking unique vegetable products, such as mini lettuces. However, their production is hampered by a wide variety of pathogens, including Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, which causes soft rot in lettuce. In this study, we aimed to select biofortified mini lettuce genotypes with good agronomic traits and resistance to P. carotovorum. A randomized block design consisting of 12 treatments, conducted in a field and greenhouse (Federal University of Uberlândia [UFU]), was used to select biofortified mini lettuce with good agronomic traits: SPAD index, stem and plant diameter, stem length, plant height, number of leaves, fresh weight, and bolt resistance. A completely randomized design consisting of 13 treatments was used for resistance or susceptibility testing. The bacterial suspension was inoculated and the following were assessed: disease severity, 16 days after inoculation; area under the disease progress curve, calculated separately at 4, 8, 12, and 16 days after inoculation as well as the sum of data calculated on all the assessment days; and the disease resistance class. The genotypes UFU 215#1 and UFU 215#2 had significantly high carotenoid concentrations. The genotypes UFU 66#4, UFU 215#1, and UFU 215#7 showed high bolt resistance. All genotypes were classified as resistant or moderately resistant to the P. carotovorum isolate, UFU A7.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar o padrão espacial de tuberculose em indígenas do Pará e sua correlação com transferência de renda. Métodos: Estudo ecológico, com 340 casos notificados em indígenas no Pará/Brasil, no período 2016-2020. Realizou-se análise descritiva e cálculo das taxas de incidência com suavização pelo método bayesiano empírico local. Fez-se autocorrelação das taxas com dados de transferência de renda pelo Moran Global, p<0,05. Resultados: As mesorregiões Marajó e Metropolitana de Belém apresentaram as taxas de tuberculose mais elevadas e reduzido número de pessoas beneficiadas com transferência de renda (correlação alto-baixo). No Sudoeste, identificaram se taxas elevadas e número significativo de pessoas beneficiadas com os auxílios financeiros (correlação alto alto), I=0,399, p=0,027. Conclusões: A autocorrelação espacial entre tuberculose e acesso a programas de transferência de renda constitui importante subsídio para formulação de políticas de proteção social, podendo impactar as ações de controle da doença nos territórios indígenas, valorizando a heterogeneidade epidemiológica identificada nas mesorregiões.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the spatial pattern of tuberculosis in Indigenous peoples from the State of Pará and its correlation with income transfer. Methods: Ecological study, with 340 cases reported in Indigenous peoples in the State of Pará, Brazil, in the period 2016-2020. The study performed a descriptive analysis and calculation of incidence rates with smoothing by the local empirical Bayesian method. The Global Moran index assessed the autocorrelation of the rates with income transfer data, p<0,05. Results: The Marajó and metropolitan mesoregions of Belém had the highest tuberculosis rates, and a reduced number of people benefited from income transfer (high-low correlation). The study identified high rates, and a significant number of people benefited from financial aid (high correlation high), I=0.399, p=0.027 in the Southwest. Conclusions: The spatial autocorrelation between tuberculosis and access to income transfer programs constitutes a relevant subsidy for the formulation of social protection policies and may impact the disease control actions in Indigenous territories, valuing the epidemiological heterogeneity identified in the mesoregions.

Métodos: Estudio ecológico, con 340 casos notificados en indígenas en Pará/Brasil, entre 2016-2020. Realizado análisis descriptivo y cálculo de tasas de incidencia con moderación por el método bayesiano empírico local. Hecho autocorrelación de tasas con datos de transferencia de renta por Moran Global, p<0,05. Resultados: Las mesorregiones Marajó y Metropolitana de Belém presentaron las tasas de tuberculosis mayores y reducido número de personas beneficiadas con transferencia de renta (correlación alto-bajo). En el Sudoeste, identificaron tasas elevadas y número significativo de personas beneficiadas con auxilios financieros (correlación alto-alto), I=0,399, p=0,027. Conclusiones: La autocorrelación espacial entre tuberculosis y acceso a programas de transferencia de renta constituye importante subsidio para formulación de políticas de protección social, pudiendo impactar las acciones de control de la enfermedad en territorios indígenas, valorizando la heterogeneidad epidemiológica identificada en las mesorregiones.

ABSTRACT Numerous tests employed to predict cardiac and functional status are expensive and not widely accessible for a considerable number of patients, particularly those diagnosed with Chagas disease (CD) residing in remote and endemic regions. To date, there is no knowledge of studies that have validated instruments that address functionality in an expanded way, including the biopsychosocial factors in patients with CD. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0), in its 12-item shortened version (WHODAS-12) when applied to patients with CD. This is a cross-sectional study of a prospective cohort that follows individuals with CD (SaMi-Trop). Data collection took place between October 2019 and March 2020. In the interviews, sociodemographic information, life habits, clinical information, and indicators of disability measured by WHODAS-12 were collected. Descriptive analysis, internal consistency and construct validity of the instrument were performed. A total of 628 patients with CD were interviewed, most were women (69.5%), their mean age was of 57 years, and most declared an average self-perception of health (43.4%). The 12 items of WHODAS-12 were distributed into three factors, which together account for 61% of the variance. The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) index was 0.90, indicating adequacy of the sample for factor analysis. The internal consistency of the global scale showed alpha = 0.87. The percentage of incapacity was 16.05%, indicating mild incapacity for the evaluated patients. WHODAS-12 is a valid and reliable measure to assess the disability of the Brazilian population with CD.

RESUMO Objetivo: descrever a implantação do Sistema de Classificação de Pacientes e o dimensionamento do pessoal de enfermagem em unidade de internação pediátrica. Método: estudo descritivo, transversal e retrospectivo, realizado em um hospital universitário do Centro-Oeste do Brasil. Depois da implantação do Sistema de Classificação de Pacientes pediátricos, compilaram-se dados das classificações do nível de complexidade assistencial (N=4.639) entre pacientes (n=608) internados de janeiro a dezembro de 2019. Empregou-se análise estatística descritiva, incluindo metodologia própria para dimensionamento de pessoal. Resultados: houve prevalência de pacientes de cuidados intermediários. Pelo dimensionamento do pessoal, constatou-se superávit (+10) de trabalhadores de nível médio, e o quantitativo de enfermeiros projetado (seis) era compatível com o disponível. Conclusão: a implantação/emprego estratégico do Sistema de Classificação de Pacientes foi indispensável para a previsão de pessoal de enfermagem pediátrica, considerando que o superávit de pessoal constatado deve ser apreciado com cautela.

ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the implementation of the Patient Classification System and the dimensioning of the nursing staff in a pediatric inpatient unit. Method: a descriptive, cross-sectional, and retrospective study, carried out at a university hospital in the Midwest of Brazil. After the implementation of the Pediatric Patient Classification System, we compiled data from the classifications of the level of care complexity (N=4,639) among patients (n=608) admitted from January to December 2019. Descriptive statistical analysis was employed, including proprietary methodology for staff sizing. Results: there was a prevalence of intermediate care patients. According to the staff dimensioning, there was a surplus (+10) of mid-level workers, and the projected number of nurses (six) was compatible with the available number. Conclusion: the strategic implementation/employment of the Patient Classification System was indispensable for the pediatric nursing staffing forecast, considering that the staffing surplus found should be appreciated with caution.

RESUMEN Objetivo: describir la implantación del Sistema de Clasificación de Pacientes y el dimensionamiento del personal de enfermería en una unidad de hospitalización pediátrica. Método: estudio descriptivo, transversal, retrospectivo, realizado en un hospital universitario del Centro-Oeste de Brasil. Tras la implantación del Sistema de Clasificación de Pacientes Pediátricos, se recopilaron los datos de las clasificaciones del nivel de complejidad asistencial (N=4.639) entre los pacientes (n=608) ingresados de enero a diciembre de 2019. Se utilizó el análisis estadístico descriptivo, incluida nuestra propia metodología de dimensionamiento del personal. Resultados: prevalencia de pacientes de cuidados intermedios. En cuanto a la dimensión del personal, se constató un superávit (+10) de trabajadores de nivel medio, y el número de enfermeros proyectado (seis) era compatible con el disponible. Conclusión: la implementación/empleo estratégico del Sistema de Clasificación de Pacientes fue indispensable para la previsión del personal de enfermería pediátrica, considerando que el excedente de personal encontrado debe ser apreciado con cautela.

Resumo Introdução: realizar a predição de doenças relacionadas ao trabalho é um desafio às organizações e ao poder público. Com as técnicas de aprendizado de máquina (AM), é possível identificar fatores determinantes para a ocorrência de uma doença ocupacional, visando direcionar ações mais efetivas à proteção dos trabalhadores. Objetivo: predizer, a partir da comparação de técnicas de AM, os fatores com maior influência para a ocorrência de dermatite ocupacional. Métodos: desenvolveu-se um código em linguagem R e uma análise descritiva dos dados e identificaram-se os fatores de influência de acordo com a técnica de AM que demonstrou melhor desempenho. O banco de dados foi disponibilizado pelo Serviço de Dermatologia Ocupacional da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz e contém informações de trabalhadores que apresentaram alterações cutâneas sugestivas de dermatite ocupacional no período de 2000-2014. Resultados: as técnicas com melhor desempenho foram: neural network, random forest, support vector machine e naive Bayes. As variáveis sexo, escolaridade e profissão foram as mais adequadas para os modelos de previsão de dermatite ocupacional. Conclusão: as técnicas de AM possibilitam predizer os fatores que influenciam a segurança e a saúde dos trabalhadores, os parâmetros que subsidiam a implantação de procedimentos e as políticas mais efetivas para prevenir a dermatite ocupacional.

Abstract Introduction: to predict work related diseases is a challenge for organizations and the governmental authorities. By means of machine learning (ML) techniques it is possible to identify factors that determine the occurrence of an occupational disease, aiming at taking more effective actions to protect workers. Objective: to predict, by comparing ML techniques, the factors which highly influence the occurrence of occupational dermatitis. Methods: we developed a code in R language and a descriptive analysis of the data and identified the influence factors according to the ML technique that presented the best performance. The database was made available by the Occupational Dermatology Service of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and assembles information of the workers who experienced cutaneous alterations suggestive of occupational dermatitis between 2000-2014. Results: the techniques which presented the best performance were: neural network, random forest, support vector machine, and naive Bayes. Sex, schooling, and profession were the most adequate variables for the occupational dermatitis prediction models. Conclusion: ML techniques allowed to predict the factors that influence the workers’ safety and health, as well as the parameters that subsidize the procedures implementation, and the most effective policies to prevent occupational dermatitis.

The Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique is an important method of evaluating material strain fields. Composite materials have inherently heterogeneous elastic properties, in the function of the different phases present in the composition, whereat the traditional techniques of deformation evaluation may not be sufficient to determine the mechanisms that eventually contribute to the failure of the material. The present work were evaluated, the tensile mechanical properties of polyester matrix composites loaded with an industrial residue of red mud, with a mass fraction of 20%. The properties were surveyed using the conventional technique of strain gauge and compared with the data obtained through DIC. The results showed that the DIC technique was accurate in monitoring the displacements and determining the average deformation of the tested specimens, in addition to providing ample deformation fields, for the evaluation of failure mechanisms throughout the sample request process.

RESUMO: O mormo é uma doença infecciosa de equídeos causada por Burkholderia mallei, uma bactéria Gram-negativa intracelular, não móvel e facultativa que pode ser transmitida a outros animais e humanos. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever os casos de mormo relatados no estado do Maranhão, em uma região de transição Amazônia-Cerrado do Nordeste do Brasil, no período de 2007 a 2017. Um banco de dados em uma planilha eletrônica (Microsoft Excel 2010) foi desenvolvido contendo informações sobre o número de animais positivos de acordo com a idade, sexo, finalidade, ano, mês, municípios e mesorregiões de origem do animal. A análise descritiva foi realizada sobre os dados fornecidos pela Agência Estadual de Defesa Agropecuária do Estado do Maranhão (AGED), e pelo laboratório privado oficial. Como o banco de dados não possui informações sobre animais negativos, possíveis fatores de risco não puderam ser avaliados. Entre o total de 62.555 equídeos foram avaliados com o teste de fixação do complemento (CFT), 59.036 eram cavalos, 2.981 mulas e 538 jumentos. Trinta e cinco (0,06%) amostras reagiram ao CFT. Cinco amostras adicionais foram testadas pela técnica de western blot e três foram positivas. Todos os animais positivos foram cavalos (Equus caballus) da área rural. Os resultados indicam que o mormo pode ser endêmico no estado do Maranhão e uma preocupação de saúde pública.

ABSTRACT: Glanders is an infectious disease of equids caused by Burkholderia mallei, a facultative intracellular non-mobile Gram-negative bacterium that can be transmitted to other animals and humans. This study described glanders cases reported in the state of Maranhão, located within an Amazon-Cerrado transition region in northeastern Brazil, from 2007 to 2017. A database in an electronic spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel 2010) was developed containing information on the number of positive animals according to age, sex, purpose, year and month, municipality and mesoregion of origin of the animal. The descriptive analyzis was performed on data provided by the State Agency for Agricultural and Livestock Protection of the state of Maranhão (AGED), and by the official private laboratory. As the database did not have information data about negative animals, possible risk factors could not be evaluated. Among the total of 62,555 equids were evaluated by means of the complement fixation test (CFT), 59,036 were horses, 2,981 mules and 538 donkeys. Thirty-five samples (0.06%) reacted in the CFT. Five additional samples were by the western blot technique and three of them were positive. All the reactive horses (Equuscaballus) were from rural areas. Results presented here indicate that glanders may be endemic in the state of Maranhão and is a public health concern.

RESUMEN: Describir las opciones terapéuticas disponibles y analizar la esperanza de vida de las mujeres diagnosticadas de cáncer de mama triple negativo. Se trató de una revisión sistemática de la literatura, se utilizaron las plataformas de búsqueda LILACS, BVS, PubMed y Periódicos capes para encontrar artículos publicados entre 2015 y 2021 en los idiomas portugués, inglés y español. Se aplicaron las palabras clave "cáncer de mama triple negativo" y "esperanza de vida", utilizando el operador booleano AND (Y). Finalmente, se seleccionaron 14 estudios que cumplían los criterios de inclusión. El cáncer de mama triple negativo presenta opciones terapéuticas limitadas debido a su clasificación inmunohistoquímica, por lo que es sometido constantemente a quimioterapia, radioterapia y procedimientos quirúrgicos que dejan debilitada a la paciente. Sin embargo, se están desarrollando otras metodologías como la inmunoterapia y el uso de fármacos con diferentes dianas terapéuticas, cuyos resultados preliminares muestran un aumento de la supervivencia de los pacientes y la posibilidad de un futuro prometedor en la terapia del tumor triple negativo.

RESUMO: Descrever as opções terapêuticas disponíveis e analisar a expectativa de vida de mulheres diagnosticadas com câncer de mama triplo-negativo. Tratou-se de uma revisão sistemática de literatura e foram utilizadas as plataformas de pesquisa LILACS, BVS, PubMed e Periódicos capes para encontrar artigos publicados de 2015 à 2021 nos idiomas português, inglês e espanhol. Foram aplicadas as palavras-chave “câncer de mama triplo negativo” e “expectativa de vida”, utilizando o operador booleano E (AND). Ao final foram selecionados 14 estudos que se adequavam nos critérios de inclusão. O câncer de mama triplo-negativo apresenta limitadas opções terapêuticas devido sua classificação imuno-histoquímica, sendo assim submetido constantemente a quimioterapia, radioterapia e procedimento cirúrgico que deixam a paciente fragilizada. Entretanto, outras metodologias como a imunoterapia e uso de fármacos com diferentes alvos terapêuticos estão em desenvolvimento. Resultados preliminares demonstram um aumento na sobrevida das pacientes e possibilidade de um futuro promissor na terapia do tumor triplo negativo.

ABSTRACT: Describe the therapeutic options available and analyze the life expectancy of women diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. This was a systematic literature review, the search platforms LILACS, BVS, PubMed and Periódicos capes were used to find articles published from 2015 to 2021 in Portuguese, English and Spanish languages. The keywords "triple negative breast cancer" and "life expectancy" were applied, using the Boolean operator AND. In the end 14 studies were selected that fit the inclusion criteria. Triple-negative breast cancer has limited therapeutic options due to its immunohistochemical classification, thus being constantly subjected to chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical procedures that leave the patient weakened. However, other methodologies such as immunotherapy and the use of drugs with different therapeutic targets are under development. Preliminary results show an increase in patient survival and the possibility of a promising future in the therapy of triple negative tumor.

Resumo O nemátode das lesões radiculares, Pratylenchus penetrans, é um dos fitoparasitas mais destrutivo, responsável por perdas a nível mundial num significativo número de plantas hospedeiras. O controlo químico destes organismos baseia-se em fumigantes e não fumigantes, que providenciam uma protecção sistémica. Tais métodos de controlo são dispendiosos e prejudiciais quer para o ambiente quer para os humanos. Os compostos produzidos naturalmente pelas plantas poderão desempenhar um papel importante no controlo de nemátodes. A actividade nematicida de 8 compostos que ocorrem naturalmente em plantas, de duas classes de compostos, foi avaliada a 2 mg/mL durante 24 h. Os ensaios foram efectuados segundo a metodologia de contacto directo usualmente empregue. P. penetrans revelou-se extremamente insensível aos compostos testados com valores de mortalidade compreendidos entre 1.0 e 5.8%. No nosso conhecimento, a actividade nematicida de 4 compostos fenólicos (catequina, ácido cafeico, ácido gálico e ácido gentísico) foi testada pela primeira vez em P. penetrans.

Abstract The root lesion nematode, Pratylenchus penetrans, is one of the most harmful plant parasites, responsible for worldwide productivity losses in a significant number of plant hosts. Generally, chemical control relies on synthetic compounds used through fumigation or direct contact, which offers a systemic protection. These control methods are costly and hazardous to the environment and to humans. Phytochemicals may play an important role in nematode control. The nematicidal activity of eight compounds that occur naturaly in plants, from two classes of compounds, was assessed at 2 mg/mL, for 24 h. Bioassays were performed following the standard direct contact methodology. P. penetrans was remarkably tolerant to the tested compounds, with mortality range between 1.0 and 5.8 %. To the best of our knowledge, the nematicidal activity of 4 phenolic compounds (catechin, caffeic acid, gallic acid and gentisic acid) was evaluated for the first time for P. penetrans.
