ABSTRACT Objective: To identify risk factors to pre-surgical complications in patients with cystic echinococcosis (CE) in endemic areas of Peru. Materials and methods: Study of cases (n=43) and controls (n=127) not paired was designed, with a case-control ratio of 1:3 based on a secondary source. The case was defined as the patient with CE who presented with pre-surgical complications related or not with the disease and the control without pre-surgical complication. The response variable was preoperative complication and the exposition ones were age, gender, degree of instruction, occupation, number, size (diameter in centimeters) and location of the cyst. To identify the risk factors, a bivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to obtain the crude odds ratios (cOR) and then the variables with significant association were adjusted by a multivariate logistic regression analysis using the Stata® version 14 software, obtaining the adjusted odds ratios (aOR). Results: Fifty eight point eight percent (24/43) of the cases were women and the median age was 35 years and 59.1% (75/127) of the controls correspond to the female gender and the median age was 27 years. The multivariate logistic regression analysis found that being over 56 years old has an aOR 2.91 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.007-8.433) and having ≥3 cysts has an aOR 4.26 (95% CI: 1.62-11.22) for present pre-surgical complications in patients with CE. Conclusion: It was identified that being over 56 years old and having ≥3 cysts are risk factors for presenting pre-surgical complications in CE.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Identificar los factores asociados a complicaciones prequirúrgicas en pacientes con equinococosis quística (EC) en áreas endémicas del Perú. Materiales y métodos: Se diseñó un estudio de casos (n=43) y controles (n=127), sin emparejamiento, de fuente secundaria con una relación de caso-control de 1:3. Se definió como «caso» al paciente con EC que presentó complicaciones prequirúrgicas relacionadas o no con la enfermedad y el control sin complicación prequirúrgica. La variable respuesta fue complicación prequirúrgica y las de exposición fueron edad, género, grado de instrucción, ocupación, número de quistes, tamaño (diámetro en centímetros) y localización del quiste. Para identificar los factores de riesgo, primero se calcularon los odds ratio crudos (ORc) mediante regresión logística; luego las variables que mostraron asociación significativa se ajustaron mediante análisis multivariado de regresión logística utilizando Stata® versión 14, y se obtuvieron los odds ratio ajustados (ORa). Resultados: El 55,8% (24/43) de los casos fueron mujeres y la mediana de edad fue 35 años. Entre los controles, el 59,1% (75/127) fueron mujeres y la mediana de edad fue 27 años. En el análisis de regresión logística multivariado, se encontró que tener más de 56 años tiene un ORa de 2,91 (intervalo de confianza [IC] 95%: 1,01-8,43) y tener ≥3 quistes tiene un ORa de 4,26 (IC 95%: 1,62-11,22) para presentar complicaciones prequirúrgicas en pacientes con EQ. Conclusión: Los factores asociados para presentar complicaciones prequirúrgicas en EQ fueron el tener más de 56 años y el tener ≥3 quistes.

ABSTRACT Objetivos. To determine the trend and factors associated with brushing two or more times per day in children under twelve years of age between 2013 and 2018 in Peru. Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted by secondary analysis of data reported by the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES). Information on children with at least one brushing per day was taken into account, considering as an "Adequate Toothbrushing Frequency" (ATF) for those who reported brushing two to more times per day. Percentage measures were generated by geographical area, health, housing, and household characteristics. Factors associated with an ATF were determined by using binary logistic regression for complex surveys, trend variability was identified by joinpoint regression with a 95% confidence. Results. In 2013, the ATF was 79.0%, increasing to 83.9% by 2018. Four out of 25 geographic areas were identified as having no variation on the ATF, and four others decreased. All sanitary characteristics showed favoring brushing, emphasizing that not sharing the toothbrush generated a 2.30 OR, 95% CI: 1.46 to 3.60. The natural region, type of place of residence, and wealth index quintile affected the ATF. The ATF was higher as the age group increased. Conclusions. The percentage of ATF has increased in recent years, being favorably influenced by health aspects; in rural areas, this percentage is significantly lower, something that is also evident in the Highland region.

RESUMEN Objetivos. Determinar la tendencia y factores asociados al cepillado de dos o más veces por día en niños menores de doce años entre el 2013 y 2018 en Perú. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó un estudio transversal mediante análisis secundario de datos reportados por la Encuesta Demográfica y de Salud Familiar. Se consideró la información de niños con al menos un cepillado al día, considerando como «Adecuada Frecuencia de Cepillado Dental» (AFC) para quienes reportaban de dos a más; se generaron medidas porcentuales por ámbito geográfico, características sanitarias, de vivienda y hogar. Se determinaron los factores asociados a la AFC mediante regresión logística binaria para encuestas complejas, la variabilidad de la tendencia se identificó mediante regresión joinpoint con un 95% de confianza. Resultados. En el 2013, la AFC fue del 79,0% con un aumento a 83,9% para el 2018; se identificó que cuatro de 25 espacios geográficos se mantuvieron sin variación de AFC, y otros cuatro disminuyeron. Todas las características sanitarias mostraron favorecer el cepillado, destacándose que el no compartir el cepillo generó un OR de 2,30, IC 95%: 1,46 a 3,60. La región natural, el tipo de lugar de residencia y el quintil de riqueza afectaron la AFC; la AFC fue mayor según se incrementa el grupo etario. Conclusiones . El porcentaje de AFC ha aumentado en los últimos años, siendo influenciado favorablemente por los aspectos sanitarios; a nivel rural este porcentaje es significativamente menor, algo que también se evidencia en la región sierra.

Objective: To determine the relationship between the knowledge, attitudes and practices of parents / caregivers and the oral health status of their children from 3 to 5 years of age belonging to the Initial Educational Center (CEI) N ° 120 Casuarinas , Ventanilla District. Material and Methods: The study was cross-sectional and observational. It was attended by 79 children from 3 to 5 years of age and their respective parents / caregivers. The univariate analysis of the quantitative variables was performed by calculating the mean and standard deviation (summary measures), and qualitative variables by determining proportions. The evaluation of oral hygiene was carried out according to Green and Vermillion using the simplified oral hygiene index (IHO-S) and dental caries according to Gruebbel (ceo-d index). In addition, the relationship between knowledge, attitudes and practices (CAP) and dental caries and oral hygiene was assessed using the Spearman correlation coefficient. Results: A prevalence of early childhood caries (EEC) of 82.3%, a ceo-d of 5.24 and an IHO-S of 1.56 was found in the children evaluated. No statistically significant association was found between the ceo-d and IHO-S indices of the children and the knowledge, attitudes and practices on oral health of their parents / caregivers, except in attitude. Conclusions: We found a regular level of knowledge, attitudes and practices, and a statistically significant moderate relationship between attitudes of parents / caregivers and the oral health status of their children (ceo-d index, p <0.05; IHO-S, p <0.05).

Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre los conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas de padres/cuidadores y el estado de salud bucal de sus niños de 3 a 5 años de edad pertenecientes al Centro Educativo Inicial (C.E.I) N° 120 Casuarinas , Distrito de Ventanilla. Material y Métodos: El estudio fue de tipo transversal y observacional. Se contó con la participación de 79 niños de 3 a 5 años de edad y sus respectivos padres/cuidadores. El análisis univariado de las variables cuantitativas se realizó mediante el cálculo de la media y desviación estándar (medidas de resumen), y de las variables cualitativas mediante la determinación de proporciones. La evaluación de la higiene bucal fue realizada según Green y Vermillion mediante el índice de higiene oral simplificado (IHO-S) y de caries dental según Gruebbel (índice ceo-d). Además, se evaluó la relación entre conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas (CAP) y caries dental e higiene bucal mediante el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman. Resultados: Se encontró una prevalencia de caries de infancia temprana (CIT) de 82,3%, un ceo-d de 5,24 y un IHO-S de 1,56 en los niños evaluados. No se encontró asociación estadísticamente significativa entre los índices ceo-d e IHO-S de los niños y conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas sobre salud bucal de sus padres/cuidadores, excepto en actitud. Conclusiones: Se encontró un nivel regular de conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas, y una relación moderada estadísticamente significativa entre actitudes de los padres/cuidadores y el estado de salud bucal de sus niños (Índice ceo-d, p < 0,05; IHO-S, p < 0,05).

To assess the reliability and validity of the translated and culturally-adapted Institutional Review Board Researcher Assessment Tool (IRB-RAT) for Peruvian research ethics committees (RECs). Materials and Methods. The IRB-RAT is an instrument that determines how RECs are perceived by researchers based on eight factors, using two formats: 1) importance in the work of the researcher and 2) descriptive of the REC being evaluated. Its original English version was translated and culturally adapted into Spanish, with the support of experts and representatives of the target population. Then, according to the responses of 113 users, the heterogeneous items were identified and eliminated until a final version of 29 items was obtained. The reliability of this version was reviewed using Cronbach’s α and omega coefficient, its internal structure validity through a confirmatory factor analysis with the unweighted least squares method. Results. Translation and cultural adaptation complied with internationally recommended steps. Reliability at the level of the eight factors was moderate for format 1 (0.67<α<0.89; 0.71<ω<0.89) and high for format 2 (0.83<α<0.92; 0.85<ω<0.92). Content validity was high at item level and moderate for factors. Internal structure validity was good for format 1 (AGFI=0.97, GFI=0.97, NFI=0.97, RMR=0.04) and moderately good for format 2 (AGFI=0.99, GFI=0.99, NFI=0.99, RMR=0.10). Conclusions. Our Spanish adaptation of the IRB-RAT has sufficient reliability and validity to assist in the continuous improvement of the RECs in Peru and other Spanish-speaking countries.

Materiales y métodos. El IRB-RAT es un instrumento que determina como son percibidos los CEI por los investigadores en función a ocho factores, mediante dos formatos: 1) importancia en el trabajo del investigador y 2) descriptivo del CEI evaluado. Su versión original en inglés se tradujo y adaptó culturalmente al español, con el apoyo de expertos y representantes de la población objetivo. Luego, según las respuestas de 113 usuarios, se identificaron y eliminaron los ítems heterogéneos hasta obtener una versión final de 29 ítems. La confiabilidad de esta versión se revisó mediante α de Cronbach y coeficiente omega, su validez de estructura interna mediante un análisis factorial confirmatorio con el método de mínimos cuadrados no ponderados. Resultados. La traducción y adaptación cultural cumplió con los pasos recomendados internacionalmente. La confiabilidad a nivel de los ocho factores fue moderada para el formato 1 (0,67<α<0,89; 0,71<ω<0,89) y alta para el formato 2 (0,83<α<0,92; 0,85<ω<0,92). La validez de contenido fue alta a nivel de ítems y moderada para los factores. La validez de estructura interna fue buena para el formato 1 (AGFI=0,97, GFI=0,97, NFI=0,97, RMR=0,04) y moderadamente buena para el formato 2 (AGFI=0,99, GFI=0,99, NFI=0,99, RMR=0,10). Conclusión. Nuestra adaptación al español del IRB-RAT tiene confiabilidad y validez suficientes para asistir en la mejora continua de los CEI del medio peruano y otros similares de habla hispana.

ABSTRACT Objectives. To assess the implementation of an intervention based on the sending of text messages and e-mails to internal medicine residents in order to achieve an increase in the prescription of thromboprophylaxis according to Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG). Materials and methods. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in the inpatient units of internal medicine at two general hospitals in Lima, Peru: one selected to implement the intervention and the other as control. The unit of analysis was the therapeutic order sheet. It was considered that the intervention should increase the order of thromboprophylaxis according to CPG with respect to the initial assessment and also in relation to the control hospital. Results. Atotal of 394 therapeutic order sheets, 227 (57.4%) from the intervention hospital and 167 (42.4%) from the control, were evaluated. In the intervention hospital, 64.5% initially had an order of thromboprophylaxis according to CPG, which decreased to 54.4% after the intervention; overuse increased from 13.6 to 26.8%. Conclusions. Intervention based on sending text messages and e-mails had no impact, showing a tendency to overuse of thromboprophylaxis post-intervention.

RESUMEN Objetivos. Evaluar la aplicación de una intervención basada en el envío de mensajes de texto y correos electrónicos dirigido a médicos residentes de medicina interna para lograr el incremento de la prescripción de tromboprofilaxis acorde a Guías de Práctica Clínica (GPC). Materiales y métodos. Se realizó un estudio tipo cuasiexperimental en los servicios de hospitalización de medicina interna de dos hospitales generales de Lima, Perú, uno seleccionado para aplicar la intervención y el otro como control. La unidad de análisis fue la hoja de prescripción médica. Se consideró que la intervención debería incrementar la prescripción acorde a GPC con respecto a la evaluación inicial y también respecto al hospital control. Resultados. Se evaluaron 394 hojas de prescripción médica, 227 (57,4%) procedentes del servicio intervenido y 167 (42,4%) correspondieron del control. En el servicio intervenido, inicialmente el 64,5% tuvo una prescripción acorde a GPC, para disminuir a 54,4% luego de la intervención; el sobreuso aumentó de 13,6 a 26,8%. Conclusiones. La intervención basada en el envío de mensajes de texto y correos electrónicos no tuvo impacto, observándose una tendencia al sobreuso de tromboprofilaxis posintervención.

ABSTRACT Objetives. Our aim was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the FACES-III among Peruvian high school students. Materials and Methods. This is a psychometric cross-sectional study. A probabilistic sampling was applied, defined by three stages: stratum one (school), stratum two (grade) and cluster (section). The participants were 910 adolescent students of both sexes, between 11 and 18 years of age. The instrument was also the object of study: the Olson's FACES-III. The analysis included a review of the structure / construct validity of the measure by factor analysis and assessment of internal consistency (reliability). Results. The real-cohesion scale had moderately high reliability (Ω=.85) while the real-flexibility scale had moderate reliability (Ω=.74). The reliability found for the ideal-cohesion was moderately high (Ω=.89) like for the scale of ideal-flexibility (Ω=.86). Construct validity was confirmed by the goodness of fit of a two factor model (cohesion and flexibility) with 10 items each [Adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI) = 0.96; Expected Cross Validation Index (ECVI) = 0.87; Normed fit index (NFI) = 0.93; Goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.97; Root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.06]. Conclusions. FACES-III has sufficient reliability and validity to be used in Peruvian adolescents for the purpose of group or individual assessment.

RESUMEN Objetivos. Evaluar las propiedades psicométricas del FACES-III en una población de estudiantes adolescentes peruanos. Materiales y métodos. El presente estudio es transversal, de tipo psicométrico. El muestreo aplicado fue probabilístico, definido en tres etapas: primer estrato (colegio), segundo estrato (grado), conglomerado (sección). Los participantes fueron 910 estudiantes adolescentes de ambos sexos, entre los 11 y 18 años. El instrumento es, a la vez, el objeto de estudio: el FACES-III de Olson. El análisis incluyó la revisión de la validez de estructura/constructo mediante análisis factorial y de la confiabilidad por consistencia interna (índices alpha, theta y omega). Resultados. La escala cohesión-real tiene confiabilidad moderadamente alta (Ω=0,85) mientras que la escala flexibilidad-real tiene confiabilidad moderada (Ω=0,74). Para la escala cohesión-ideal la confiabilidad es moderadamente alta (Ω=0,89), lo mismo que para la escala de flexibilidad-ideal (Ω=0,86). La validez de constructo se confirmó en la bondad de ajuste del modelo de dos factores (cohesión y flexibilidad) con 10 ítems cada uno [índice ajustado de bondad de ajuste (AGFI)=0,96; índice de validación cruzada esperada (ECVI)=0,87; índice de ajuste normado (NFI)=0,93; índice de bondad de ajuste (GFI)=0,97; raíz del error cuadrático medio de aproximación (RMSEA)=0,06]. Conclusiones. El FACES-III tiene confiabilidad y validez suficientes como para ser utilizado en población adolescente peruana con fines de evaluación grupal o individual.

Objectives. To assess the implementation of an intervention based on the sending of text messages and e-mails to internalmedicine residents in order to achieve an increase in the prescription of thromboprophylaxis according to Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG). Materials and methods. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in the inpatient units of internal medicine at two general hospitals in Lima, Peru: one selected to implement the intervention and the other as control. The unit of analysis was the therapeutic order sheet. It was considered that the intervention should increase the order of thromboprophylaxis according to CPG with respect to the initial assessment and also in relation to the control hospital. Results. A total of 394 therapeutic order sheets, 227 (57.4%) from the intervention hospital and 167 (42.4%) from the control,were evaluated. In the intervention hospital, 64.5% initially had an order of thromboprophylaxis according to CPG, which decreased to 54.4% after the intervention; overuse increased from 13.6 to 26.8%. Conclusions. Intervention based on sending text messages and e-mails had no impact, showing a tendency to overuse of thromboprophylaxis post-intervention.

Objetivos. Evaluar la aplicación de una intervención basada en el envío de mensajes de texto y correos electrónicosdirigido a médicos residentes de medicina interna para lograr el incremento de la prescripción de tromboprofilaxis acorde a Guías de Práctica Clínica (GPC). Materiales y métodos. Se realizó un estudio tipo cuasiexperimental en los servicios de hospitalización de medicina interna de dos hospitales generales de Lima, Perú, uno seleccionado para aplicar la intervención y el otro como control. La unidad de análisis fue la hoja de prescripción médica. Se consideró que la intervención debería incrementar la prescripción acorde a GPC con respecto a la evaluación inicial y también respecto al hospital control. Resultados. Se evaluaron 394 hojas de prescripción médica, 227 (57,4%) procedentes del servicio intervenido y 167 (42,4%) correspondieron del control. En el servicio intervenido, inicialmente el 64,5% tuvo una prescripción acorde a GPC, para disminuir a 54,4% luego de la intervención; el sobreuso aumentó de 13,6 a 26,8%. Conclusiones. La intervención basada en el envío de mensajes de texto y correos electrónicos no tuvo impacto, observándose una tendencia al sobreuso de tromboprofilaxis posintervención.

Objetives. Our aim was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the FACES-III among Peruvian high school students. Materials and Methods. This is a psychometric cross-sectional study. A probabilistic sampling was applied, defined by three stages: stratum one (school), stratum two (grade) and cluster (section). The participants were 910 adolescent students of both sexes, between 11 and 18 years of age. The instrument was also the object of study: the Olson’s FACES-III. The analysis included a review of the structure / construct validity of the measure by factor analysis and assessment of internal consistency (reliability). Results. The real-cohesion scale had moderately high reliability (Ω=.85) while the real-flexibility scale had moderate reliability (Ω=.74). The reliability found for the ideal-cohesion was moderately high (Ω=.89) like for the scale of ideal-flexibility (Ω=.86). Construct validity was confirmed by the goodness of fit of a two factor model (cohesion and flexibility) with 10 items each [Adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI) = 0.96; Expected Cross Validation Index (ECVI) = 0.87; Normed fit index (NFI) = 0.93; Goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.97; Root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.06]. Conclusions. FACES-III has sufficient reliability and validity to be used in Peruvian adolescents for the purpose of group or individual assessment.

Objetivos. Evaluar las propiedades psicométricas del FACES-III en una población de estudiantes adolescentes peruanos. Materiales y métodos. El presente estudio es transversal, de tipo psicométrico. El muestreo aplicado fue probabilístico, definido en tres etapas: primer estrato (colegio), segundo estrato (grado), conglomerado (sección). Los participantes fueron 910 estudiantes adolescentes de ambos sexos, entre los 11 y 18 años. El instrumento es, a la vez, el objeto de estudio: el FACES-III de Olson. El análisis incluyó la revisión de la validez de estructura/constructo mediante análisis factorial y de la confiabilidad por consistencia interna (índices alpha, theta y omega). Resultados. La escala cohesión-real tiene confiabilidad moderadamente alta (Ω=0,85) mientras que la escala flexibilidad-real tiene confiabilidad moderada (Ω=0,74). Para la escala cohesión-ideal la confiabilidad es moderadamente alta (Ω=0,89), lo mismo que para la escala de flexibilidad-ideal (Ω=0,86).
