The aim of this research was to evaluate the bioremediation of a soil contaminated with wastes from a plasticizers industry, located in São Paulo, Brazil. A 100-kg soil sample containing alcohols, adipates and phthalates was treated in an aerobic slurry-phase reactor using indigenous and acclimated microorganisms from the sludge of a wastewater treatment plant of the plasticizers industry (11gVSS kg-1 dry soil), during 120 days. The soil pH and temperature were not corrected during bioremediation; soil humidity was corrected weekly to maintain 40%. The biodegradation of the pollutants followed first-order kinetics; the removal efficiencies were above 61% and, among the analyzed plasticizers, adipate was removed to below the detection limit. Biological molecular analysis during bioremediation revealed a significant change in the dominant populations initially present in the reactor.

A paralisia periódica é entidade caracterizada por crises de fraqueza muscular relacionadas com alterações do nível sérico de potássio. A biópsia muscular pode mostrar alterações específicas ou inespecíficas. Nosso estudo tem como objetivo a análise de 17 biópsias musculares de 14 pacientes com paralisia periódica (14 hipocalêmica, 2 hipercalêmica). Todas as biópsias mostraram alguma alteração histopatológica. Quatorze biópsias apresentavam vacúolos, que se caracterizavam por serem únicos, de localização periférica, de aparecimento frequente e preferentemente em fibras do tipo I. Os vacúolos eram mais visualizados naqueles pacientes com longa evolução e sem relação com a frequência de crises. Os agregados tubulares foram encontrados em 10 biópsias principalmente naqueles pacientes com crises frequentes e doença de longa evolução. Em 3 pacientes foram realizadas 2 biópsias, notando-se piora das alterações em 2. Um paciente evoluiu com quadro clínico de miopatia permanente, confirmado pela biópsia muscular. Alterações inespecíficas foram encontradas em graus variáveis em 15 biópsias. Nosso estudo mostra que os vacúolos e os agregados tubulares são achados frequentes na paralisia periódica, constituindo importante auxílio diagnóstico. Alterações miopáticas evidentes à biópsia sugerem o aparecimento de miopatia permanente, quadro decorrente de doença de longa evolução ou crises severas.

Periodic paralysis is a rare disease, characterized by transient weakness associated with abnormal levels of serum potassium. Muscle biopsy may show a wide range of abnormalities, vacuoles being more specifically linked to the disease. We analysed 17 muscle biopsies from 14 patients with periodic paralysis (14 hypokalemic, 2 hyperkalemic). All of them showed at least one histological abnormality. Fourteen specimens showed vacuoles that were peripheral, single, frequent and preferentially found in type I fibers. Frequency or severity of attacks did not correlate with the presence of vacuoles but those were more easily found in patients with long term disease. Ten biopsies showed tubular aggregates, specially on the patients with frequent crises or long term disease. A second biopsy was done in three patients and in two we observed a worsening of the histopathologic picture. One patient manifested interictal weakness with evident myopathic changes on the muscle biopsy. Nonspecific changes were found in variable degrees in 15 biopsies. Our study shows that vacuoles and tubular aggregates are frequent changes in periodic paralysis and therefore helpful for the diagnosis. Important myopathic findings in the muscle biopsy suggest a permanent myopathy which probably develops after severe crises or long term disease.

Este trabalho foi realizado nas localidades de Duartina, Piratininga, Presidente Alves, Bocaina, Boracéia, Dois Córregos e Potunduva (Região de Bauru), em 1981. O objetivo foi avaliar o conhecimento e o uso de plantas medicinais, pela população. Foram entrevistadas 372 pessoas, das quais, a maioria pertencia ao estrato social baixo. Mais de 95% das pessoas conheciam plantas medicinais, com grande utilização de duas a quatro variedades. O não-uso representou, no total, apenas 10,8%. O local de obtenção mais freqüente foi quintal, seguindo-se a farmácia. Citaram-se 118 plantas diferentes para uso medicinal Destas, em apenas 9,3% não se encontrou, na literatura, o nome científico correspondente e, em 17,0%, a indicação do valor medicinal O uso mencionado pelos entrevistados foi coincidente com os da literatura em quase 70% das vezes, em pelo menos um sintoma ou doença. Discutiram-se as razões do recente incremento da medicina caseira; alguns aspectos referentes à industrialização e comercialização de plantas medicinais e sublinhou-se a necessidade de promoção de pesquisas farmacológicas para o melhor conhecimento do valor terapêutico da flora medicinal brasileira.

The knowledge and the use of medicinal plants (MP) were investigated in 372 people interviewed in the Bauru (São Paulo) area in 1981. The majority of the people was from a low social status. More than 95% of the people interviewed know MP, with a high use of 2 to 4 varieties. Only 10,8% did not use these plants. The MP are obtained at the house yard (first choice) or at the pharmacy (second choice). Almost 118 different MP were cited. From these only 9,3% did not have a correspondent scientific name and 17% did not have pharmacological properties described in the medical literature. Almost 70% of our observations are in accordance with the literature considering at least one symptom or one disease. The authors also discuss the reasons of the increment of domestic medicine, and some aspects of the industrial production and trade of drugs made of medicinal plants. They emphasize the necessity of pharmacological research in order to provide knowledge on the therapeutic use of the brazilian medicinal flora.
