RESUMO: Óleos essenciais de plantas, cujo composto majoritário é o citral, mostraram efeitos benéficos quando adicionados à ração para peixes. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito da adição de citral sobre os parâmetros zootécnicos e atividades das enzimas digestivas de Centropomus undecimalis. Os juvenis foram alimentados por 45 dias com dietas contendo diferentes quantidades de citral (0,0 - controle, 0,5, 1,0 e 2,0 mL por kg de ração). Os parâmetros de qualidade da água foram mantidos estáveis durante o experimento e nenhuma mortalidade foi observada. Ao final do período experimental, o tratamento 0,5 mL citral por kg de ração teve o menor ganho de peso e taxa de crescimento específico e a maior conversão alimentar, enquanto os mesmos parâmetros não diferiram entre os demais tratamentos. A atividade da pepsina foi maior no estômago de peixes alimentados com 0,5 mL de citral por kg de ração e a atividade de amilase foi maior no intestino de peixes alimentados com 0,5 e 2,0 mL citral por kg de ração comparado ao grupo controle. A atividade da lipase intestinal foi maior em todos os grupos que foram alimentados com citral, em comparação ao grupo controle. As atividades de quimotripsina e tripsina não mostraram diferença entre os grupos. Consequentemente, a adição de citral na ração em qualquer um dos níveis testados não é recomendada para robalo flecha.

ABSTRACT: Essential oils of plants whose main compound is citral showed beneficial effects when added to fish feed. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the dietary effect of the addition of citral on zootechnical parameters and digestive enzyme activities of Centropomus undecimalis. Juveniles were fed for 45 days with diets containing different amounts of citral (0.0 - control, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mL per kg of diet). The water quality parameters were kept stable during the experiment and no mortality was observed. At the end of the experimental period, the treatment 0.5 mL citral per kg of diet had the lowest weight gain and specific growth rate, and the highest feed conversion, while the same parameters did not differ between the other treatments. Pepsin activity was higher in the stomach of fish fed with 0.5 mL citral per kg of diet and amylase activity was higher in the intestine of fish fed with 0.5 and 2.0 mL citral per kg of diet compared to the control group. Intestinal lipase activity was higher in all groups that were fed with citral compared to the control group. Chymotrypsin and trypsin activities showed no difference between groups. Consequently, dietary addition of citral at any of the levels tested is not recommended for common snook.

Resumo A mastite bovina está associada a uma resposta antibacteriana endógena mediada pela produção de espécies reativas. Contudo, o excesso de reações oxidativas pode desencadear apoptose celular agravando o quadro clínico dos animais. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a resposta redox no plasma de vacas leiteiras com e sem mastite submetidas ou não ao tratamento com antibioticoterapia. As vacas foram divididas em Grupo Controle (G1), vacas sem mastite; grupo G2, vacas com mastite sem tratamento com antimicrobianos; grupo G3, vacas com mastite tratadas com antibiótico. As amostras sanguíneas foram coletadas após a primeira ordenha da manhã. Foram analisados a existência de lipoperoxidação (LPO) e os níveis de proteínas carboniladas (PCs), de glutationa reduzida (GSH), de ácido ascórbico (ASA) e de ácido úrico (AU). Os animais do G3 apresentaram aumento na LPO e das PCs. Em todos os grupos, os níveis de GSH permaneceram inalterados. Os valores plasmáticos de ASA e de AU mostraram-se diminuídos nos animais dos grupos G2 e G3. Os resultados demonstraram que o tratamento com antimicrobianos parece agravar os danos oxidativos presentes na mastite bovina, reforçando a importância da busca por alternativas terapêuticas a fim de minimizar esse efeito.

Abstract Bovine mastitis is associated with an endogenous antibacterial response mediated by the production of reactive species. However, excess oxidative reactions can trigger cellular apoptosis, aggravating the clinical state of the animals. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the plasma redox response of dairy cows with and without mastitis submitted or not to antibiotic therapy. The cows were divided into control group (G1), cows without mastitis; group G2, cows with mastitis without antimicrobial treatment; group G3, cows with mastitis treated with antibiotics. Blood samples were collected after the first milking of the morning. The existence of lipoperoxidation (LPO) and the levels of carbonylated proteins (CPs), reduced glutathione (GSH), ascorbic acid (ASA), and uric acid (UA) were analyzed. The G3 animals showed increase in LPO and CPs. In all groups GSH levels were unchanged. Plasma ASA and AU values were decreased in the G2 and G3 groups. The results demonstrated that antimicrobial treatment seems to aggravate the oxidative damages present in bovine mastitis, reinforcing the importance of the search for therapeutic alternatives in order to minimize this effect.

Resumo Introdução: Na obesidade, verifica-se um acúmulo de tecido adiposo, o que favorece a ocorrência de estresse oxidativo. A fim de diminuir a produção das espécies reativas que levam a danos teciduais, buscam-se alternativas que contribuam para a redução do peso corporal. Este estudo avaliou se os marcadores oxidantes e antioxidantes de obesas antes e após cirurgia bariátrica reduziram o dano oxidativo. Método: Foram avaliadas 16 mulheres obesas mórbidas cinco dias antes e 180 dias após o procedimento cirúrgico. O grupo controle constituiu-se de 16 mulheres não obesas. Os níveis das substâncias reativas ao ácido tiobarbitúrico, das proteínas carboniladas, da glutationa reduzida e do ácido ascórbico foram avaliados no plasma dessas pacientes. Resultados: Os níveis de lipoperoxidação e da carbonilação de proteínas nas obesas pré-cirúrgicas eram mais elevados quando comparados ao controle e às obesas pós-cirúrgicas; os níveis de glutationa reduzida eram maiores nas obesas pré-cirúrgicas em comparação ao controle e diminuíram após a cirurgia; os níveis de ácido ascórbico eram menores nas obesas pré-cirúrgicas em relação ao controle e às obesas pós-cirúrgicas. Conclusão: Observou-se que a massa corporal influenciou na produção das espécies reativas. A cirurgia bariátrica, somada à perda de peso e à suplementação vitamínica, diminui a oxidação celular e, com isso, reduz os danos teciduais.

Summary Introduction: Obesity refers to the accumulation of fatty tissues and it favors the occurrence of oxidative stress. Alternatives that can contribute to body weight reduction have been investigated in order to reduce the production of reactive oxygen species responsible for tissue damage. The aim of the current study was to assess whether the oxidant and antioxidant markers of obese women before and after bariatric surgery were able to reduce oxidative damage. Method: We have assessed 16 morbidly obese women five days before and 180 days after the surgery. The control group comprised 16 non-obese women. Levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, carbonylated proteins, reduced glutathione and ascorbic acid were assessed in the patients' plasma. Results: Levels of lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation in the pre-surgical obese women were higher than those of the controls and post-surgical obese women. Levels of reduced glutathione in the pre-surgical obese women were high compared to the controls, and declined after surgery. Levels of ascorbic acid fell in the pre--surgical obese women compared to the control and post-surgical obese women. Conclusion: Body weight influences the production of reactive oxygen species. Bariatric surgery, combined with weight loss and vitamin supplementation, reduces cellular oxidation, thus reducing tissue damage.
