A metallic surface can exhibit low wettability through the formation of a rough structure with micro/nanometric dimensions combined with a surface energy-reducing agent. When the contact and sliding angles are ≥ 150° and ≤ 10°, respectively, the surface is classified as superhydrophobic (SHS). The study aimed to electrodeposit a microstructure with micronanometric roughness of nickel, stearic acid (Al/Ni-SA), and nickel, stearic acid with multi-layered carbon nanotubes (Al/Ni-SA-MWCNT) on aeronautical aluminum 7050. The obtained contact angles were close to 160°, and sliding angles were less than 1°, characterizing the superhydrophobic and self-cleaning nature. Freezing tests were conducted, and the deposit with MWCNT showed longer freezing times at -22°C. ABSTRACT Women living with human immunodeficiency virus are at an increased risk of developing cancers related to human papillomavirus (HPV). Thus, it is important to combine clinical assessments, serological screening, and HPV data for planning prevention policies. This study aimed to identify HPV and its specific types in the cervical, anal, and oral mucosa of HIV-seropositive women, associating it with viral load and lymphocyte count. Sociodemographic characteristics, health data (CD4+ and CD8+ T cell counts and viral load), and biological samples (cervical, anal, and oral) were collected from 86 HIV-positive women undergoing antiretroviral therapy. Data were classified according to the presence or absence of HPV-DNA, HPV-DNA presence at one or more anatomic sites, and level of oncogenic risk, considering low- and high-risk oncogenic HPV-DNA groups. The presence of HPV in the cervicovaginal site was 65.9%, 63.8% in anal canal, and 4.2% in oral mucosa. A viral load ≥75 HIV copies/mL was associated with the presence of HPV-DNA. There was an association between viral load and the low-risk HPV or high-risk HPV groups. ABSTRACT Plant species occurring in the Caatinga biome, when subjected to different water fluctuations, may have their morphophysiological and metabolic performance altered. Depending on the level of stress, the production of quality seedlings is affected. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the responses to different water availability levels in the morphophysiological and biochemical development of Croton blanchetianus Baill. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, evaluating four water regimes: 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of pot capacity, and conducted in a randomized block design, with a total 5 blocks. The variables analyzed were: branch height and branch diameter; leaf area, number of leaves, root volume; root dry mass, shoot dry mass, total dry mass and root/shoot ratio; relative water content, proline, total soluble proteins, malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and photo synthetic pigments (chlorophyll ɑ, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids). RESUMO Espécies vegetais de ocorrência no bioma Caatinga quando submetidas a diferentes flutuações hídricas podem ter seu desempenho morfofisiológico e metabólico alterado. A depender do nível de estresse, a produção de mudas de qualidade é afetada. Logo, objetivou-se avaliar as respostas às diferentes disponibilidades hídricas no desenvolvimento morfofisiológico e bioquímico de Croton blanchetianus Baill. O experimento foi desenvolvido em casa de vegetação e foram avaliados quatro regimes hídricos: 25%, 50%, 75% e 100% da capacidade de vaso e conduzido em delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso, totalizando 5 blocos. ABSTRACT: Respiratory diseases are responsible for economic losses in the poultry sector. The occurrence of coinfections can aggravate the severity of clinical signs and lesions, such as coinfection with Avibacterium paragallinarum and Gallibacterium spp. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiological, clinical and pathological aspects of an outbreak of respiratory disease in laying hens caused by a coinfection by A. paragallinarum and Gallibacterium spp. in the state of Sergipe, northeastern Brazil. High morbidity and mortality were observed, accompanied by apathy, anorexia, serous nasal discharge and a decrease in egg production (approximately 10%). Five laying hens were selected for general clinical examination and euthanized. Samples of nasal turbinates, infraorbital sinuses, trachea, liver and spleen were collected, fixed in 10% buffered formalin and routinely processed for histopathology. For the microbiological examination, the whole heads of the birds were collected, packed in Nasco® plastic bags, stored at -8°C then sent to a private laboratory for bacterial isolation on Petri dishes containing blood agar and incubated at 37°C in microaerophilic. Grossly, there was a bilateral increase of periorbital volume with complete obstruction of nasal turbinates due to the presence of caseous exudate. Microscopically, there was marked diffuse chronic necrocaseous and granulomatous rhinitis, marked diffuse chronic granulomatous and heterophilic necrotizing sinusitis, focally extense lymphohistiocytic and heterophilic tracheitis with epithelial hyperplasia, loss of cilia and atrophy of mucous glands. RESUMO: As doenças respiratórias são responsáveis por perdas econômicas no setor avícola. A ocorrência de coinfecções pode agravar a severidade dos sinais clínicos e das lesões, tais como a coinfecção por Avibacterium paragallinarum e Gallibacterium spp. Objetivou-se descrever os aspectos epidemiológicos, clínicos e patológicos de um surto de doença respiratória em galinhas poedeiras causado por coinfecção de A. paragallinarum e Gallibacterium no estado de Sergipe, Nordeste do Brasil. Foram observadas elevada morbidade e mortalidade, acompanhada de apatia, anorexia, secreção nasal serosa e diminuição da produção de ovos (aproximadamente 10%). Cinco galinhas de postura foram selecionadas para exame clínico e eutanásia. Amostras de cornetos nasais, seios infraorbitários, traqueia, fígado e baço foram coletadas, fixados em solução de formalina 10% tamponada e processadas pelo protocolo de histopatologia de rotina. Resumo Objetivo Avaliar o conteúdo midiático produzido acerca da vacinação contra a covid-19 direcionada à pessoa idosa no Brasil. Método Trata-se de uma pesquisa documental a partir da análise de 19 matérias veiculadas pelos jornais Estadão, Folha de S. Paulo, O Globo e GAÚCHAZH, publicadas entre dezembro de 2020 e setembro de 2021. Os dados foram submetidos ao software Iramuteq, analisados pela Classificação Hierárquica Descendente (CHD) e interpretados por Análise de Conteúdo. Resultados O corpus originou cinco classes temáticas. Nestas, verifica-se a difusão das informações sobre a vacinação contra a covid-19 para idosos como uma medida necessária à saúde dessa população, o que justifica a intensa veiculação de notícias acerca da campanha vacinal. As matérias evidenciaram a organização das políticas de imunização, bem como os benefícios da mesma para o referido público, sobretudo àqueles que se encontravam institucionalizados. Além disso, a vacina emergiu como protagonista na luta para conter a disseminação do coronavírus, aumentando a proteção dos residentes das instituições de longa permanência para idosos e, inegavelmente, diminuindo a mortalidade dos mais velhos. Abstract Objective To evaluate the media content produced about vaccination against covid-19 aimed at the older population in Brazil. Method A desk research study based on the analysis of 19 articles published by the newspapers Estadão, Folha de S. Paulo, O Globo and GAÚCHAZH between December 2020 and September 2021. The data were processed by the Iramuteq software, analyzed using Descending Hierarchical Classification (DHC) and interpreted by Content Analysis. Results The corpus yielded five thematic classes. These classes revealed the dissemination of information about vaccination against covid-19 for older people as a necessary measure for the health of this population, justifying the intense reporting of news on the vaccination campaign. The articles highlighted the organization of immunization policies, as well as their benefits for the older population, especially institutionalized individuals. In addition, the vaccine emerged as a key element in the fight to contain the spread of the coronavirus, increasing the protection of older residents of long-term care facilities and, undeniably, reducing the mortality of this population. The objective of this work was to evaluate the chemical profile, total phenol content and the antioxidant, antiacetylcholinesterase and antifungal activities of ethanol extracts from leaves (EEF) and stem (EEC) of five species of Senna, as well as to evaluate the correlation between the content of total phenols with the DPPH free radical scavenging activity and with the inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase AChEI enzyme. The phytochemical test showed the presence of secondary metabolites in all extracts. The EEF and EEC of Senna trachypus, stood out for presenting the highest values of total phenols. S. trachypus EEF and EEC showed the best action on the acetylcholinesterase enzyme. All species showed antioxidant activity, especially the EEF from S. trachypus. A strong correlation was observed for the variables total phenols and antioxidant activity (r = -0.71), very strong for total phenols and anti-acetylcholinesterase (r = -0.84) and moderate activity for antioxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase activity (r = 0.43). Only S. trachypus extracts showed activity against all dermatophytes, when compared to the other species. The species S. trachypus was considered the most promising plant for further studies, in order to find compounds with pharmacological actions.

ABSTRACT The sustainability of animal production on pasture is based on improving the management of forage species used, which ensures increase in animal productivity, pasture perenniality and cost reduction. The objective was to characterize productive, structural, physiological and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) responses of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf ‘Basilisk’ over the flexibilization of the grazing management adopted. Four defoliation combinations were evaluated, which consisted of the arrangement of two (85% and 95%) light interceptions (LI) and two (1.3 and 1.8) residual leaf area indexes (RLAI), as parameters of entry and exit of the animals from the pasture, respectively. Higher total forage biomass was observed (TFB, kg DM ha-1) 18.82%, when the canopy was managed at the lowest defoliation frequencies (95% LI), but with a higher morphological composition of the stem component and dead material. The 95% LI produced an extra layer of leaves than the canopy managed at 85% LI. The physiological variables were affected by the higher frequency of defoliation (85% LI), with lower photosynthetic rates. NDVI was higher in the canopy managed in the pre-grazing condition at 95% LI (0.88) and residual condition at 1.8 RLAI (0.49), when compared to 85% LI (0.86) and 1.3 RLAI (0.44). For greater production per animal, managing at 85% LI × 1.8 RLAI with pre-grazing and residual NDVI of 0.85 and 0.49, respectively, is the most suitable while for greater animal production per area, managing at 95% LI × 1.3 RLAI with pre-grazing and residual NDVI of 0.88 and 0.44, respectively, becomes more efficient.

ABSTRACT Cowpea beans are of great socioeconomic expression for the rural population in North and Northeastern Brazil. This legume is rich in essential nutrients and exhibits great resistance to water stress. However, for grain processing, it is fundamental to study legume behavior during the hydration process. This study aims to evaluate the mass transfer of different cowpea beans via mathematical modeling to determine the viability of hydration for commercialization as a canned product. Physical and chemical analyses of lipids and moisture were performed. The soaking process was performed in a water bath with distilled water at 30, 40, and 50 °C. The mathematical model of Peleg presented satisfactory adjustments, with R2 values ranging between 99.78% and 99.99% and relative error (P) of <3.74%. In addition, the influence of binomial time/temperature was observed during hydration.

Resumo Introdução As resinas compostas são alternativas restauradoras, porém sua superfície pode favorecer o acúmulo de biofilme. Objetivo Analisar in vitro a adesão de biofilmes de Streptococcus mutans (UA159) e Candida albicans (ATCC 90028) em superfícies de resinas compostas convencionais e bulk fill. Material e método Foram utilizadas quatro marcas de resinas compostas e bulk fill: Aura Bulk Fill - SDI®; Premisa - Kerr®; Opallis- FGM®, e Filtek bulk fill flow - 3M®. Utilizou-se saliva artificial para formação da película salivar, por 60 min a 37 °C. O inóculo foi padronizado em 1×108 UFC/mL para S. mutans e 1×106 UFC/mL para C. albicans. Os espécimes (n=8/grupo) foram acondicionados em placas de 24 poços, com BHI suplementado com sacarose para as bactérias, e RPMI 1640, para os fungos. A formação do biofilme foi avaliada considerando as unidades formadoras de colônia (UFC/mL).Os dados foram analisados por ANOVA e Tukey (p<0,05). Resultado Para os biofilmes de S. mutans, não houve diferença significativa na contagem de UFC/mL entre os diferentes tipos de resina (p=0,119). Na contagem de UFC/mL para biofilme de Candida, as médias variaram entre 7,78 e 8,34. Houve diferença significativa entre as marcas, especialmente entre as resinas convencionais e bulk fill. Conclusão O presente estudo demonstra que não há diferença na adesão para biofilmes de S. mutans. Porém, há diferença na adesão da C. albicans na superfície de diferentes resinas compostas.

Abstract Introduction Composite resins are restorative alternatives, but their surface may favor the accumulation of biofilm. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro adhesion of Streptococcus mutans (UA159) and Candida albicans (ATCC 90028) biofilms on the surface of conventional and bulk fill composites. Material and method Four brands of conventional and bulk fill composites were used, Aura Bulk Fill - SDI®, Premisa - Kerr®, Opallis- FGM® and Filtek bulk fill flow - 3M®. Artificial saliva was used to form the salivary film for 60 min at 37 ° C. The inoculum was standardized at 1x108 CFU/mL for S. mutans and 1x106 CFU/mL for C. albicans. The specimens (n = 8/group) were placed in 24-well plates, with BHI supplemented with sucrose for bacteria and RPMI 1640 for fungi. The biofilm formation was evaluated considering the colony forming units (CFU/mL). The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test (p <0.05). Result For S. mutans biofilms, there was no significant difference in the CFU/mL count between the different types of composites (p = 0.119). In the CFU / mL count for C.albicans biofilm, the CFU/mL ranged from 7.78 to 8.34. There was a significant difference between brands for Candida, especially between conventional and bulk fill composites. Conclusion The present study demonstrates that there is no difference in adhesion for S. mutans biofilms. On the other hand, there is a difference in the adhesion of C. albicans to the surface of different composite resins.

Abstract The spread of SARS-CoV-2 and the distribution of cases worldwide followed no clear biogeographic, climatic, or cultural trend. Conversely, the internationally busiest cities in all countries tended to be the hardest hit, suggesting a basic, mathematically neutral pattern of the new coronavirus early dissemination. We tested whether the number of flight passengers per time and the number of international frontiers could explain the number of cases of COVID-19 worldwide by a stepwise regression. Analysis were taken by 22 May 2020, a period when one would claim that early patterns of the pandemic establishment were still detectable, despite of community transmission in various places. The number of passengers arriving in a country and the number of international borders explained significantly 49% of the variance in the distribution of the number of cases of COVID-19, and number of passengers explained significantly 14.2% of data variance for cases per million inhabitants. Ecological neutral theory may explain a considerable part of the early distribution of SARS-CoV-2 and should be taken into consideration to define preventive international actions before a next pandemic.

RESUMO O fibroma ossificante juvenil (FOJ) é uma lesão fibro-óssea benigna incomum que acomete indivíduos jovens e merece destaque por apresentar um comportamento clínico agressivo e altas taxas de recidivas. Este trabalho tem como objetivo relatar sete casos diagnosticados como FOJ - com variação de idade entre 11 e 39 anos - em um centro de referência, correlacionando nossos achados com os aspectos clinicopatológicos existentes na literatura. A mandíbula foi a localização mais comum; em três casos foi relatada sintomatologia dolorosa. Com relação aos achados histopatológicos, a maioria dos casos exibiu um padrão bem celularizado, sendo o subtipo trabecular o mais encontrado. No que diz respeito ao tratamento, dos três casos que apresentaram recidiva, em dois, foram realizados tratamentos conservadores. Diante disso, ressalta-se a importância do conhecimento dos aspectos clínicos epatológicos do FOJ para a realização de um diagnóstico correto e o estabelecimento de um tratamento adequado que diminua o alto índice de recidivas dessa lesão.

ABSTRACT Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is an uncommon benign fibro-osseous lesion that affects young individuals and deserves attention because it presents an aggressive clinical behavior and high rates of recurrence. This paper aims to report seven cases diagnosed as JOF - age ranging from 11 to 39 years - in a referral center, correlating our findings with clinical and pathological aspects in the literature. The mandible was the most common location, and in three cases, painful symptoms were reported. Regarding the histopathological findings, the majority of cases exhibited a cellularized pattern, and the trabecular subtype was the most commonly found. Regarding treatment, three cases relapsed, and, in two of them, conservative treatments were performed. Accordingly, knowing the clinical-pathological aspects of JOF is important for the correct diagnosis and the establishment of an appropriate treatment that decreases the high recurrence rate of this lesion.

RESUMEN El fibroma osificante juvenil (FOJ) es una lesión fibro-ósea benigna pocofrecuente que acomete personasjóvenesy merece realce, puespresenta comportamiento clínico agresivo y altas tasas de recidivas. Reportamos siete casos diagnosticados como FOJ - con pacientes entre 11 y 39 anos de edad - en un centro de referencia, relacionando nuestros hallazgos con los aspectos clínicos y patológicos existentes en la literatura. La mandíbula fue la ubicación más común; en tres casos se reportaron síntomas dolorosos. En lo que respecta a los hallazgos histopatológicos, la mayor parte de los casos se mostró altamente celularizada, siendo el subtipo trabecular el más común. En cuanto al tratamiento, de los tres casos que presentaran recurrencia, en dos se realizaron tratamientos conservadores. Ante eso, se resalta la importancia de conocer los aspectos clínicos y patológicos del FOJ para hacer el diagnóstico preciso y establecer un tratamiento adecuado que reduzca el alto índice de recidivas de esa lesión.

Chemotherapy treatment of leishmaniasis is based on the use of pentavalent antimonials, but these drugs present low efficacy and high toxicity. In the search for new antileishmanial agents, essential oils (EOs) from four Croton species (C. argyrophylloides, C. jacobinensis, C. nepetifolius and C. sincorensis) were evaluated against Leishmania infantum chagasi, L. amazonensis and L. braziliensis. EOs were analyzed by gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry. Spathulenol, β-caryophyllene, β-caryophyllene oxide, 1,8-cineole and methyl eugenol were the major constituents. The evaluation of antioxidant activity by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) method showed that all EOs have moderate antioxidant activity. All oils were similarly active against L. i. chagasi, and C. nepetifolius EO showed the best result against L. amazonensis, with median inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 9.87 μg mL-1, similar to amphotericin B (IC50 = 7.38 μg mL-1). The oils presented low cytotoxicity in macrophages. The in silico analysis revealed that spathulenol and 1,8-cineole were active against the enzyme Leishmania infantum trypanothione reductase (LiTR), showing excellent interaction energies, making them promising agents for leishmaniasis control.

RESUMO Introdução: considerando-se o grande número de aparelhos propulsores mandibulares, não é uma tarefa fácil escolher o melhor deles para o seu paciente. Objetivo: descrever o desenvolvimento desses aparelhos e a experiência clínica de vinte anos dos autores na sua utilização. Métodos: os aparelhos funcionais fixos aqui apresentados foram classificados em flexíveis, rígidos e híbridos, e o modo de ação de cada um deles foi descrito e ilustrado por meio de quatro casos clínicos. Conclusões: os aparelhos propulsores rígidos fornecem mais resultados esqueléticos do que os flexíveis e os híbridos. Esses últimos têm efeito semelhante ao uso de elásticos com direção de Classe II e, basicamente, corrigem a má oclusão de Classe II com alterações dentoalveolares. Do ponto de vista biomecânico, os propulsores fixos estão mais indicados para tratar a Classe II em pacientes dolicofaciais do que os elásticos de Classe II.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Considering the large number of fixed functional appliances, choosing the best device for your patient is not an easy task. Objective: To describe the development of fixed functional appliances as well as our 20-year experience working with them. Methods: Fixed functional appliances are grouped into flexible, rigid and hybrid. They are different appliances, whose action is described here. Four clinical cases will be reported with a view to illustrating the different appliances. Conclusions: Rigid fixed functional appliances provide better skeletal results than flexible and hybrid ones. Flexible and hybrid appliances have similar effects to those produced by Class II elastics. They ultimately correct Class II with dentoalveolar changes. From a biomechanical standpoint, fixed functional appliances are more recommended to treat Class II in dolichofacial patients, in comparison to Class II elastics.

The aim of this study was to develop and characterize poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) and poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic)-acid (PLGA) microparticles containing coencapsulated trans-dehydrocrotonin (t-DCTN) and t-DCTN:hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (t-DCTN:HP-β-CD), with t-DCTN loaded at concentrations ranging from 11.25 to 45.00 mg. A preformulation study was carried out using a 24-1 fractional factorial design. Microparticles were prepared using the double w/o/w emulsion-solvent evaporation method. The coencapsulated t-DCTN:HP-β-CD-loaded PLGA microparticles (t-DCTN/t-DCTN:HP-β-CD/PLGA-MPs) presented a smaller particle size (9.6 ± 0.1 µm) and higher drug loading (13.93 ± 0.05%, corresponding to 90.1 ± 0.3% of encapsulation efficiency, EE) and t-DCTN-loaded PLGA microparticles (t-DCTN/PLGA-MPs) presented particle size of 37.0 ± 0.2 µm and drug loading of 10.12 ± 0.01% (EE of 71.2 ± 0.1%). The coencapsulation of t-DCTN and t-DCTN:HP-β-CD into PLGA microparticles increased drug loading (50%) and improved the drug controlled release (k2 = 0.0475 and De = 0.0475 × 10-11 cm2 s-1). Taking into account these findings, new oral formulation of PLGA microparticles containing coencapsulated t-DCTN and t-DCTN:HP-β-CD are available as biocompatible drug delivery systems for further pharmacological purposes.
