ABSTRACT: Skin grafting is a simple and very useful surgical technique for wound repair, especially where there is difficulty in performing direct synthesis or other reconstructive techniques. low-intensity laser (LIL) has already been used successfully in cases where the graft was applied to wounds shortly after its creation. However, LIL still lacks standardization due to conflicting studies on its results. Thus, this study compared the effectiveness of continuous wave LIL with pulsed wave LIL in stimulating the healing of skin grafts, applied to newly created wounds in rabbits. For this purpose, 31 rabbits were distributed into: control group (CG, n = 10), continuous wave laser group (GLC; n = 10) and pulsed wave laser group (GLP; n = 11). Postoperative management was similar between all groups, with the exception of laser application, as indicated by the group. The GLC and GLP groups showed similar evolution, with a satisfactory healing process of the graft, unlike the GC group. These results were maintained in the microscopic evaluation, as the groups treated with laser showed less inflammation, better integration with the receptor area, greater re-epithelialization and collagenization. There was no difference in vascular density between the treatment groups on immunohistochemical analysis. The newly created wound was not able to provide nutrition for the skin graft in rabbits, but LIL is an efficient adjuvant therapy in stimulating healing between the recipient area and the graft, promoting full integration. However; although, statistically there was no difference in the form of light emission, pulsed or continuous, patients who received continuous wave LIL showed superior microscopic evolution.

RESUMO: A enxertia cutânea é uma técnica cirúrgica simples e bastante útil para o reparo de feridas, principalmente, quando há dificuldade em realizar a síntese direta ou outras técnicas reconstrutivas. O laser de baixa intensidade (LBI) já foi utilizado com sucesso em casos em que o enxerto foi aplicado em feridas logo após a sua criação. No entanto, a LBI ainda carece de padronizações, mediante estudos conflitantes sobre seus resultados. Desta forma, este trabalho objetivou comparar a eficácia da LBI de onda contínua com onda pulsada na estimulação da cicatrização de enxertos cutâneos, aplicados em feridas recém-criadas em coelhos. Para tanto, foram utilizados 31 coelhos distribuídos em: grupo controle (GC, n = 10), grupo laser onda contínua (GLC; n = 10) e grupo laser onda pulsada (GLP; n = 11). O manejo pós operatório foi semelhante entre todos os grupos, com exceção da aplicação do laser, conforme o grupo indicado. Os grupos GLC e GLP apresentaram evolução semelhante, com processo cicatricial satisfatório do enxerto, ao contrário do grupo GC. Tais resultados se mantiveram na avaliação microscópica, pois os grupos tratados com laser apresentaram menor inflamação, melhor integração à área receptora, maior reepitelização e colagenização. Não houve diferença na densidade vascular entre os grupos de tratamento na análise imuno-histoquímica. A ferida recém-criada não é capaz de fornecer nutrição para o enxerto cutâneo nos coelhos, mas a LBI é uma terapia adjuvante eficiente em estimular a cicatrização entre a área receptora e o enxerto, promovendo integração total. Entretanto, embora não houve diferença estatística na forma de emissão de luz, pulsada ou contínua, os pacientes que receberam LBI em onda contínua apresentam evolução microscópica superior.

ABSTRACT Overcoming malnutrition in all its forms, which is also manifested in the obesity epidemic, is one of the priorities of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. This article presents reflections on food insecurity in Brazil, based on topics such as population growth, climate change, biodiversity and traditional and regenerative food systems; it also addresses the role of social initiatives to guarantee the Human Right to Adequate Food. The Nutrition and Poverty Research Group, Planetary Health - Brazil Group, and the Center for Artificial Intelligence (C4AI) - AgriBio Axis, assume that the organized and systemic resumption of the initiatives mentioned out in this position paper can contribute to the articulation between research, public policies and services, to combat all forms of malnutrition, as a complex and priority problem to ensure social welfare.

RESUMO O combate à má alimentação em todas as suas formas, que também se expressa na epidemia da obesidade, é uma das prioridades da Agenda 2030 e dos Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Este artigo traz elementos sobre insegurança alimentar no Brasil, a partir de temas relativos ao crescimento populacional, mudanças climáticas, biodiversidade e sistemas alimentares tradicionais e regenerativos; trata também do papel dos movimentos sociais para a garantia do Direito Humano à Alimentação Adequada. O Grupo de Pesquisa em Nutrição e Pobreza, o Saúde Planetária Brasil, e o Centro de Inteligência Artificial (C4AI) - Eixo AgriBio, entendem que a retomada organizada e sistêmica das frentes apontadas neste artigo de posicionamento, pode constituir um caminho para a articulação entre pesquisa, serviço e políticas públicas na direção do combate à fome e às demais manifestações da má alimentação, enquanto problema complexo prioritário para a garantia do bem-estar social.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the safety of the transfusion process in a public teaching hospital and to outline the profile of the hemotherapy care provided. METHODS: This was an exploratory, descriptive, and prospective study with a quantitative approach and grounded in field research. Data were obtained from medical and nursing records and active search. RESULTS: Concentrated red blood cells were the most transfused blood component. Inadequate indications of blood components were detected in 15% of Concentrated red blood cells transfusions, 20% of fresh plasma, 29.2% of platelet concentrates, and 36.4% of cryoprecipitates. Filling out the blood component request forms, the nursing checklist and the entry book were inadequate in 88.3, 92.8, and 69.5% of the procedures, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Faults were identified throughout the transfusion process, revealing inadequate compliance with current standards and legislation, essential in minimizing the occurrence of errors and maximizing the safety of transfusion. Studies of this nature reinforce the need for continued research in this field.

Background: In Brazil, mathematical models for deriving estimates and projections of COVID-19 cases have been developed without data on asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection. We estimated the seroprevalence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 among blood donors in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Methods: Data were collected on 2,857 blood donors from April 14 to 27, 2020. We report the crude prevalence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, the weighted prevalence by the total state population, and adjusted prevalence estimates for test sensitivity and specificity. To establish the correlates of SARS-CoV-2 prevalence, we used logistic regression models. The analysis included period and site of blood collection, sociodemographic characteristics, and place of residence. Results: The proportion of SARS-Cov-2 positive tests without any adjustment was 4.0% (95% CI 3.3-4.7%), and the weighted prevalence was 3.8% (95% CI 3.1-4.5%). Further adjustment by test sensitivity and specificity produced lower estimates, 3.6% (95% CI 2.7-4.4%) and 3.3% (95% CI 2.6-4.1%), respectively. The variable most significantly associated with the crude prevalence was the period of blood collection: the later the period, the higher the prevalence. Regarding socio-demographic characteristics, the younger the blood donors, the higher the prevalence, and the lower the educational level, the higher the odds of a positive SARS-Cov-2 antibody. Similar results were found for the weighted prevalence. Discussion: Although our findings resulted from a convenience sample, they match some basic premises: the increasing trend over time, since the epidemic curve in the state is still on the rise; the higher prevalence among the youngest who are more likely to circulate; and the higher prevalence among the less educated as they have more difficulties in following the social distancing recommendations. Despite the study limitations, it is possible to infer that protective levels of natural herd immunity to SARS-CoV-2 are far from being reached in Rio de Janeiro.

OBJECTIVES: In cirrhotic children, infection events and sepsis are more frequent and more severe due to immune dysfunction. The objectives of the current study were therefore to develop an experimental model of infection and sepsis in cirrhotic weaning growing rats, by the use of bile duct ligation (BDL) and cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Additionally, the correlation of the clinico-histopathological data and serial cytokine levels in septic cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic animals was studied. METHODS: Young Wistar rats of age 21 days and of weight between 70-90 g were divided into 12 groups according to the surgical procedure performed: sham (sacrificed after 2 or 4 weeks), BDL (sacrificed after 2 or 4 weeks), CLP (2- or 4-week old animals sacrificed after 12 or 24 hours), BDL+CLP (2- or 4-week old animals sacrificed after 12 hours). Histopathological studies and determination of serum levels of cytokines IL-1 beta, IL-10, and TNF-alpha, for studies of systemic infection, were performed. Murine sepsis scores (MSS) based on the clinical aspects just before euthanasia were also included. RESULTS: A transitory increase in IL-1, IL-10, and TNF-alpha levels was observed, with different patterns according to the groups. Two-hit groups tended to present with higher values of serum cytokines and histopathological scores than their septic non-cirrhotic counterparts. There was a correlation between mortality rate and MSS (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: The model is feasible and may be utilized in studies on liver cirrhosis and infection in growing animals.

Abstract Purpose To analyze changes in the thermal pattern in the skin graft receptor bed, after the use of therapeutic ultrasound through the thermographic images. Methods Eighteen Rattus norvegicus albinus Wistar, separated into two groups: GST groups (without tumor and without treatment with ultrasound) and GT (with tumor and treatment with ultrasound). In the GT group, induction of carcinogenesis was performed by single intradermal application of 0.05 ml DMBA at 0.5%, diluted in acetone. Subsequently, a technique of reconstructive grafting surgery of the mesh type was performed in both groups and treatment with therapeutic ultrasound was performed in the GT group the alternate day protocol at 3, 6, 10 and 15 days after the procedure. The thermographic evaluation occurred on days 3, 6, 10 and 15 after the grafting. Results There was a significant difference between the statistical evaluation of the temperature of the control group when compared to the treated group, on the different evaluation days (p <0.0001). Conclusion The thermographic analysis of the images was effective in evaluating the healing process, being the use of thermography feasible to evaluate changes in the thermal standard in the surgical bed, besides the beneficial effects of the US.

RESUMO A hipertensão pode cursar com disfunção diastólica de ventrículo esquerdo (VE) e a consequência disso pode ser sintomas e sinais de insuficiência cárdica (IC). O refluxo hepatojugular (RHJ), descrito como sinal de regurgitação da valva tricúspide, pode refletir alterações estruturais e funcionais do VE no paciente hipertenso. O sinal pode estar presente na vigência de IC. Caso: homem, 49 anos compressão arterial não controlada. Ao exame físico apresentou turgência jugular, RHJ e pressão arterial elevada. Os exames complementares mostraram sinais de sobrecarga atrial e de ventrículo esquerdo no eletrocardiograma, e no ecocardiograma foi evidenciado aumento do volume do átrio esquerdo, hipertrofia concêntrica do VE e sinais de disfunção diastólica grau I. DISCUSSÃO: RHJ presente correlaciona-se com a pressão da artéria pulmonar e provavelmente reflete o aumento do volume sanguíneo central.

SUMMARY Hypertension may occur with left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction, and the consequence may be symptoms and signs of heart failure (HF). Hepatojugular reflux (HJR), described as a sign of regurgitation of the tricuspid valve, may reflect structural and functional changes of the LV in the hypertensive patient. The signal may be present in the presence of HF. Case: male, 49 years old with uncontrolled blood pressure. Physical examination showed jugular turgescence, HJR, and elevated blood pressure. Complementary exams showed signs of atrial and left ventricular overload in the electrocardiogram and, the echocardiogram showed left atrium volume increase, concentric LV hypertrophy and signs of grade I diastolic dysfunction. DISCUSSIO: The HJR present correlates with pulmonary artery pressure and probably reflect the increase in central blood volume.

Tetracycline is used to treat various diseases in animals and humans, so its high use causes this substance to be frequently found in effluents and in potable water reservoirs, causing serious problems for human health and the environment. Many processes are applied and evaluated in an attempt to removal tetracycline found in environment, such as adsorption. The application of iron-carbon nanoparticles with core-shell structure (Fe3O4@C) as adsorbent, can be an alternative to removal of these contaminants. In the present study Fe3O4@C nanoparticles were synthesized and used to adsorb tetracycline in aqueous solutions. The core-shell characterization was performed using X-ray diffraction techniques, infrared spectroscopy, surface area, chemical analysis and morphology, and adsorption capacity through isotherms. The results indicated that Fe3O4@C nanoparticles presented good tetracycline removal capability, 73.3%, when applied an initial concentration of antibiotic of the 30 mg L-1 and 0.5 g of adsorbent.

RESUMO: A saúde do neonato está diretamente relacionada às condições gestacionais e eficiência placentária. Os objetivos deste estudo foram: (1) avaliar parâmetros hematológicos e bioquímicos de potros nascidos de éguas com placentite ao nascimento e com 24h de vida e (2) verificar se a patologia placentária exerceu influência no grau de maturidade através da resposta hemato-bioquímica destes neonatos. De acordo com os resultados histopatológicos placentários (controle e placentite) e grau de maturidade neonatal (maturo e imaturo), os potros foram divididos em três grupos: grupo controle (n=22); e potros nascidos de éguas com placentite classificados como (2) maturos (n=26) e (3) imaturos (n=10). Foi avaliado hematócrito e concentrações sanguíneas de fibrinogênio, proteína plasmática total, leucócitos totais, lactato, glicose, creatinina, uréia, albumina, bilirrubinas, triglicerídeos, colesterol, cálcio, fósforo, magnésio, aspartato aminotransferase (AST), creatina quinase (CK), fosfatase alcalina (FA) e gama glutamiltranferase (GGT). As características placentárias foram significativamente diferentes entre os graus de maturidade neonatal (P=0.001). Éguas com placentite aguda produziram mais potros imaturos (n=8/10; 80%). No nascimento, os potros imaturos apresentaram maiores concentrações de fibrinogênio (P=0,003), creatinina (P=0,021), colesterol total (P=0,0014), AST (P=0,001), GGT (P=0,002), bilirrubina indireta (P=0,010) e total (P=0,001) e menor concentração de albumina (P=0,002). Os potros nascidos de éguas com placentite apresentaram hiperlactatemia com 24h de vida (P=0,002). A placentite aguda exerceu influência na maturidade neonatal, permitindo uma maturação fetal acelerada, porém, incompleta. Mensurações dos níveis sanguíneos de lactato, fibrinogênio, creatinina, colesterol total, AST, GGT, bilirrubinas e albumina, associado à avaliação clínica, física e comportamental, podem contribuir como indicadores de maturidade neonatal.

ABSTRACT: Newborn’s health is directly related to gestational conditions and placental efficiency. The aims of this study were: (1) To evaluate hematological and biochemical parameters of foals born from mares with placentitis at birth and at 24h of age, (2) to verify if placental pathology had any influence on neonatal maturity degree through hematological and biochemical response of those foals. According to placental findings (control and placentitis) and neonatal maturity degree (mature and immature), foals were divided into three groups: (1) Control group (n=22), foals born from mares with placentitis and classified as (2) Mature (n=26), and (3) Immature (n=10). The hematocrit and plasma concentration of fibrinogen, total plasma protein, white blood cells count, lactate, glucose, creatinine, urea, albumin, bilirubin, triglyceride, cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) were measured. Placental features were significantly different between neonatal maturity degree (P=0.001). Mares that had acute placentitis foaled more immature neonates (n=8/10; 80%). Concentrations of fibrinogen (P=0.003), creatinine (P=0.021), total cholesterol (P=0.014), AST (P=0.001), GGT (P=0.002), total (P=0.001) and unconjugated bilirubin (P=0.010) were higher at birth in the Immature group, whereas albumin levels were lower (P=0.002). Foals born from mares with placentitis presented hyperlactatemia at 24h of age (P=0.002). Acute placentitis had an influence on the neonatal maturity, allowing an accelerated but incomplete fetal maturation. The monitoring of lactate, fibrinogen, creatinine, bilirubin, cholesterol, albumin, AST, and GGT levels, associated with clinical, physical, and behavior evaluation may contribute as indicators of neonatal maturity.

Resumo A Gestão de Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos (GRSU) é um desafio mundial. Com o rápido processo de urbanização, crescimento populacional e econômico nos países pertencentes ao BRICS (Brasil, Rússia, Índia, China e África do Sul) o desafio é ainda maior, decorrente do aumento do volume de Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos (RSU) gerados por esses processos. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar o status da gestão dos RSU nos países do BRICS, bem como promover um intercâmbio de experiência e estratégias de gestão, apontando possíveis caminhos para melhorar os sistemas de GRSU, cuja a implementação deve ser adaptada à realidade de cada país. Para isso, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática de literatura a partir de uma análise bibliométrica. Os resultados mostraram que os sistemas de gestão de RSU nos países membros do BRICS não apresentam uma estrutura bem desenvolvida, muitas vezes a coleta não é eficiente, os resíduos são armazenados de maneira imprópria e destinados em áreas irregulares. A participação do setor informal é característica marcante na GRSU dos países do BRICS, notando-se, portanto, a necessidade de integração do setor informal ao sistema formal de coleta destes resíduos. Devido à alta fração orgânica, é notória as vantagens da compostagem como forma de aproveitamento dos resíduos orgânicos e como meio de reduzir a quantidade de resíduos enviados a aterros. O conhecimento da geração de RSU e a descentralização dos serviços oferecidos de GRSU possibilitaria um maior êxito no atendimento à população.

Abstract Urban Solid Waste Management (USWM) is a worldwide challenge. The problems faced are even greater due to the disproportional increase of Urban Solid Waste (USW) generation in volume, especially in a context of increased urbanization, population growth and economic globalization in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). In this context, the objective of this work is to analyze the status of MSW management in the BRICS countries, as well as to promote an exchange of experience and management strategies, pointing out possible ways to improve USWM systems that have to be adapted to each local reality. Focusing on this, a systematic literature revision was carried out through a bibliometric analysis. Results showed that the management system of these BRICS countries does not possess well-developed structures. The collection stage is quite often inefficient, the solid waste being stored in inappropriate ways and also disposed of in irregular locations. The participation of the informal sector is a trademark characteristic in USWM for BRICS countries, highlighting the need to integrate and formalize these activities for USW collection. Due to the high organic fraction, it is known that composting offers advantages as a way to promote a better use of organic waste and also as a means of reducing the amount of waste sent to sanitary landfills. Finally, with a better knowledge about solid waste generation and decentralization of the offered services, the decision makers will be able to successfully provide this essential public service.

RESUMO: Colorações histoquímicas consistem de um conjunto de reações químicas específicas das estruturas ou substâncias endógenas do tecido. Logo a Imunohistoquímica permite observar proteínas presentes nos tecidos relacionadas com fatores determinantes do comportamento biológico e patológico. A padronização dos métodos que avaliam a angiogênese decorrente de procedimentos que utilizam substâncias estimulantes à formação de novos vasos são importantes, a fim de facilitar a execução das pesquisas, bem como auxiliar na interpretação dos dados, visto que em coelhos alguns anticorpos marcadores de angiogênese na pele ainda não são padronizadas em virtude das reações cruzadas que podem ocorrer devido aos anticorpos serem confeccionados a partir de tais animais. Objetivou-se analisar os métodos histoquímicos por meio das colorações e imunohistoquímicas com marcadores de angiogênese em coelhos (Oryctolagus cuniculus) submetidos ao emprego de enxertos cutâneos associado com estimulador de angiogênese plasma rico em plaquetas, a fim de avaliar qual método seria melhor para visualização dos vasos, bem como avaliar qual anticorpo promoveria melhor imunomarcação, buscando-se assim encontrar a diferenças entre os métodos e padronizar a metodologia a ser aplicada em experimentos que utilizem coelhos. Utilizou-se 16 coelhos, separados em dois grupos com oito animais, compreendendo os grupos Gprp (plasma rico em plaquetas) e Gc (controle, solução fisiológica 0,9%). Em todos os animais foi realizada a mesma técnica de cirurgia reconstrutiva de enxertia do tipo malha, os grupos diferiram apenas a aplicação do plasma rico em plaquetas antes da síntese da ferida cirúrgica. As amostras para avaliação da angiogênese foram coletadas após 15 dias do procedimento cirúrgico. Utilizou-se no estudo histoquímico as colorações Hematoxilina & Eosina e Tricrômico de Masson para avaliação da proliferação vascular, e os anticorpos CD31 e CD34 e Caveolina - 1 para avaliação imunohistoquímica. A comparação entre os grupos (Gprp e Gc) em relação à variável categórica (intensidade de proliferação vascular) foi utilizado o teste de Kruskal-Wallis, com valores de p iguais ou inferiores a 0,05 foram considerados significativos. Os dados imuno-histoquímico foram submetidos à análise de variância para um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com 2 grupos e 5 repetições (médias) e nível de significância de 5%. Nas comparações múltiplas das médias dos grupos, utilizou-se o teste de Tukey (α = 0,05). A intensidade de proliferação vascular avaliada pelo método histoquímico HE e Tricômico de Masson encontrou-se que tal variável foi significativa no Gprp, quando comparado com o Gc. Avaliando os métodos utilizados não houve diferença significativa. A contagem microvascular (MVC) realizada com os diferentes marcadores (Caveolina-1, CD31 e CD34) foi significativa no Gprp. Correlacionando a contagem microvascular dos três marcadores utilizados não houve diferença significativa, no entanto observou-se marcação mais intensa dos vasos utilizando o anticorpo Caveolina-1, sendo intensa a marcação dos capilares, vasos de pequeno calibre, bem como em vasos maiores. Nas avaliações de CD31 e CD34 observou que houve imunomarcação dos vasos, porém não foi intensa como a Caveolina-1, alguns casos apresentaram fundo, bem como marcação discreta. Os resultados encontrados neste estudo evidenciaram os métodos histoquímicos são eficazes para avaliação semiquantitativa da angiogênese. A comparação imunohistoquímicas da Caveolina-1, CD31 e CD34 como marcadores de angiogênese em coelhos evidenciaram que ambos os anticorpos são capazes de imunomarcar os vasos neoformados, porém a Caveolina-1 apresentou melhor imunomarcação de vasos de pequeno e médio calibre, bem como menor presença de fundo, embora não seja um marcador específico para angiogênese pode ser utilizada como marcador imunohistoquímico de endotélio vascular em coelhos.

ABSTRACT: Histochemical staining consists of a set of specific chemical reactions of structures or tissue-endogenous substances. Immunohistochemistry allows verification of proteins in tissues related to biological and pathological factors. The standardization of methods to assess angiogenesis resulting from formation of new blood vessels in procedures with stimulants is important to facilitate the implementation of research as well as to assist interpretation of data. In rabbits some markers of angiogenesis antibodies in the skin are not standardized because of cross-reactions that may occur because the antibodies are made from such animals.The aim of this study was to analyze the immunohistochemical methods through dyes and immunohistochemical markers angiogenesis in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) having undergone reconstructive surgery with skin grafts associated with plasma angiogenesis stimulator rich in platelets, in order to evaluate which method would be better to visualize the vessels, as well as to evaluate which antibody would promote better immunostaining, and find the differences between the methods and to standardize the methodology to be applied in experiments using rabbits. Sixteen rabbits were used, split into two groups of eight animals: Gprp (plasma rich in platelets) and Gc (control, saline solution, 9%). The same technique of reconstructive surgery using graft mesh was performed on each rabbit. The groups differed only in the application of platelet-rich plasma before the surgical wound synthesis. Samples for evaluation of angiogenesis were collected 15 days after the surgical procedure. The dyes Hematoxylin & Eosin and Masson’s Trichrome were used in the histochemical study to evaluate vascular proliferation. Markers CD31, CD34 and Caveolin-1 was used for the immunohistochemical study. The evaluation between the groups (Gprp and Gc) in regard to the categorical variable (vascular proliferation intensity) used the Kruskal-Wallis test with p values equal to or less than 0.05 being considered significant. The immunohistochemistry was subjected to analysis of variance for a completely randomized design, with two groups and five repetitions (medium) and 5% significance level. Multiple comparison of groups resulted in the Tukey test (p=0.05) used. The amount of vascular proliferation assessed by histochemical method HE and Masson’s Trichrome was found to be a significant variable in Gprp when compared with group Gc. When evaluating the methods used, there was no significant difference. There was no difference in the three markers which were used for correlating microvessels; however, there was more intense staining of vessels when Caveolin-1 Antibody was used. This caused intense marking of the capillaries and small vessels, as well as of larger vessels. When using CD31 and CD34, the same was observed, but it was not as intense as with Caveolin-1; though some cases showed sincere and discreet marking. The results of this study demonstrated that the histochemical methods performed are effective for semi-quantitative assessment of angiogenesis. The immunohistochemical comparison of Caveolin-1, CD31, and CD34 as markers of angiogenesis in rabbits showed that both antibodies could immunostain the newly formed vessels; but the Caveolin-1 showed better immunostaining in small and medium-sized vessels, as well as a minor presence in the background. Although not specific markers for angiogenesis, they can be used as immunohistochemical markers of vascular endothelium in rabbits.

Background: Consumption of green banana flour (GBF) may promote health benefits, such as, decreased appetite, weight loss, glycemic control, intestinal function and lipid profile improvement, aging delay, cancer and heart disease prevention. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of green banana flour consumption on anthropometric and biochemical parameters in overweight women. Methods: The glycemic index of flour in the study was determined. The effects of consumption of 20 g of green banana flour/day on weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, waist and hip circumference, body composition, hemoglobin, lipid profile, glucose, insulin, insulin resistance, liver function and energy intake were evaluated in 25 overweight women for 45 days. Results: The glycemic index of the flour under study was classified as low. Reduction (p < 0.05) in systolic blood pressure, hip circumference and fasting glucose levels were found in women who had metabolic syndrome criteria. Conclusions: Consumption of green banana flour (20 g/day) for 45 days did not promote weight loss or changes in body composition in overweight women. It was noted, however, decreased hip circumference. Significant health parameter improvements were also noted in individuals with metabolic syndrome, which showed a reduction in systolic blood pressure and fasting glucose.

Introducción: El consumo de "green banana flour" (GBF) puede contribuir para la salud como, por ejemplo, aumento em las sensaciones de saciedad , pérdida de peso , control de la glucemia y mejora de la función intestinal y el perfil lipídico, retraso del envejecimiento y la prevención de el cáncer y de las enfermedades del corazón. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar los efectos del consumo de GBF sobre el parámetros antropométricos y bioquímicos de las mujeres con exceso de peso. Métodos: Se determinó el índice glucémico de la harina en el estudio. Los efectos del consumo diario de 20 g de GBF en peso, índice de masa corporal (IMC), presión arterial, circunferencia de la cintura y de la cadera, la composición corporal, los niveles de hemoglobina, glucosa e insulina, resistencia insulínica, en la función del hígado y la ingesta alimentaria se evaluaron en 25 mujeres con exceso de peso durante 45 días. Resultados: El índice glucémico de harina estudiada fue clasificada como bajo. Fue encontrado reducción (p < 0,05) en la presión arterial sistólica, en la circunferencia de la cadera y en la glicemia en mujeres que tenían los criterios de síndrome X metabólico. Conclusiones: El consumo de harina de plátano sin madurar durante 45 días no promueven la pérdida de peso o los cambios en la composición corporal en mujeres con sobrepeso. Sin embargo, hubo una reducción de la circunferencia de la cadera. Se observó también una mejoría significativa en importantes factores de salud en mujeres con síndrome X metabólico, tales como una reducción en la presión arterial sistólica y de la glucemia.
